* Global Engineering is an international course unit and a cooperation between FEUP and UMBC - University of Maryland Baltimore County, in USA. Simultaneously taught to future mechanical engineers by FEUP and UMBC, via videoconference, the course was in 2013 awarded by the Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education (NASPA) with the prize “Best Practices in International Higher Education Award” in the category Global Partnerships. Global Engineering aims at helping students work within the global context and training engineers capable of solving global, multidisciplinary problems.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE AND FURTHER INFORMATION Students willing to apply for a mobility programme at FEUP should contact our Cooperation Division. THE CITY Classified as UNESCO World Heritage, Porto is the second largest city in Portugal, after its capital Lisbon. Whoever visits Porto for the first time immediately feels the pulse of a city that is not just the regional capital of northern Portugal, but also the main trading centre in the north-west of the Iberian Peninsula. Traditionally known for its Port Wine trade, the region is home to a large cross-section of Portuguese industry, in particular the sectors of timber, furniture-making, textiles, garment manufacturing, footwear, metalworking and various engineering industries. Its commercial activity is facilitated by the cargo terminal at the port of Leixões, which handles 25% of the country’s international trade, and also by Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport, elected for the last 9 years by the Airports Council International (ACI) as one of the 5 best in Europe; its numerous low cost connections to European destinations have brought growing dynamism to the city. The pleasant atmosphere, excellent cuisine, and range of cultural and leisure activities at competitive prices make it one of Europe’s preferred destinations, receiving praise from such international publications as the Lonely Planet guide and the New York Times.
COST OF LIVING For a city of its size, Porto has one of the lowest costs of living in Portugal and in Europe. Food costs are approximately €200 per month, and accommodation prices may range, on average, between €200 and €300 per month for the rental of a room, while a studio or a bedroom apartment will cost between €350 and €600. Mobility students may also apply to be accommodated at the university halls of residence, with lower prices.
