ne of the things I’ve learned at The Innovator is to let your passion drive you outside your comfort zone. Find strength within such uncertainties, courage over doubts. Sometimes writing goes that way, too. You just have to trust your words and let your hands do the rest. Just enjoy what you’re doing and the rest will follow. That’s really how I defineThe Innovator: Passion. For me, it isn’t just an organization where people do what they’re obligated to do. It’s a place where people excel because they’re passionate about what they do.

And, thanks to the Communications Office, we can really let our passions flow. You are indeed the type of people who make us feel like we can do anything. From The Innovator, thank you so much. I myself am a believer that the only fair thing we have in this world is that each of us is given 24 hours to spend in a day. It just depends on how we make the most of it. We’re all made to show the world who we are and stand out, aren’t we? To share our passions. To Get up. Dare to Imagine. Invent. Inspire. Dare to be an Innovator. This magazine is the manifestation of our collective passion, our dare to be creative. I hope you enjoy it.

EU Tech was a featured exhibitor at the 26th Career Counseling and Guidance Fair hosted by International Education Specialists (Inter-Ed), from September 3 to 5, at the Philippine Trade Training Center (PTTC), Pasay City. This fair has been held annually since 1988 and has been instrumental in helping Philippine students choose colleges and career paths best suited for them. This year’s event welcomed over 10,000 students from over 125 high schools nationwide, the largest attendance in Inter-Ed’s history. Exhibitors at the event were from both local and international academic institutions and organizations.

Inter-Ed was founded in 1980 with the mission to help send Philippine students overseas to study abroad. They are partnered with institutions and organizations in New Zealand, Canada, Singapore, Australia, and the United Kingdom. Inter-Ed co-founded Southville Foreign University, STA Travel, and Future Perfect Business English Specialists. Mr. Roger Bartholomew and Mrs. Helen Bartholomew, the founders of Inter-Ed, were present at the ribbon cutting ceremony and welcomed students to the event. Mr. Bartholomew, who is also president of the organization, has been a committed advocate of empowering the Philippines through education and has been supportive of the country’s transition to K-12, noting that, despite the challenges schools and colleges will face, the advantages of the transition are numerous.

COVER STORY

FILIPINO TIME:

CAN WE MAKE A TIME MACHINE? by FRANCIS FITZGERALD S. INTAL

FEELS LIKE THE FIRST TIME: THE TIME MACHINE

a human created wormhole here on Earth and then exit instantly through another wormhole currently aboard the Innovator X-23 space plane occupied by a second FEU Tech student.

Imagine: The year is 2099. FEU Tech engineers have constructed a prototype time traveling vehicle, affectionately known as STEP (Space-Time Exploration Pod). In moments, one brave FEU Tech student will take the helm of STEP and be sent 10 years into the future and become one of the first Filipino time travelers. —Is it possible?

The space plane by then will have been circling Earth’s moon at near light speed for 10 years—but, to the student aboard, only six hours will have gone by. When the pod arrives via wormhole, the space plane will cease its trip momentarily to allow both FEU Tech students to fly back to Earth where 10 years have passed—of course, the students themselves have only aged less than a day. —Is it possible?

Yes, if we can go fast. Really fast. Using Albert Einstein’s theory of general relativity and quantum mechanics, many have theorized that time travel into the future is indeed possible if we could go fast enough. To illustrate the idea, world-renown physicist Stephen Hawking uses a hypothetical example of a train circling the earth for 100 years at nearly the speed of light, which is 186,000 miles per second, or seven times around the earth in a single second. While the people outside of the train would have experienced 100 years passing, the people aboard the train would only have experienced a week’s worth of time. This phenomenon is called “time dilation” and is part of Einstein’s special theory of relativity: time slows down in the vicinity of a near light speed object. Physicists have already proven this theory to be true after having been able to extend the lives of extremely short-lived particles by accelerating them to nearly the speed of light in a massive particle accelerator in Geneva.

TIME IN A BOTTLE: WORMHOLE TIME TRAVEL Unlike previous prototypes, STEP does not attempt to travel really, really fast into the future—at least, not exactly in the way you might imagine. The revolutionary pod vehicle will enter

20

THE INNOVATOR | Volume 3 - 1

The above scenario is a variation of one hypothesized by Kip Thorne, a highly respected theoretical physicist currently teaching at Cal Tech, who also helped create the concept for the international film hit Interstellar. Professor Thorne was one of the earliest physicists to theorize how a person could use a wormhole for space and time travel. Since a wormhole is a theoretical “bridge” or tunnel through space and time, Professor Thorne theorized that if one wormhole is left stationary while the second wormhole is propelled to near light speed, a person could enter one and arrive instantly to the future of the second (remember, time slows down for things traveling close to light speed). Professor Thorne’s colleague, world-renown physicist Stephen Hawking, also believes that they exist, but he explains that they are too tiny (a billio trillion trillionths of a centimeters across) and self-destructing to be traversable by people: “As soon as the wormhole expands, natural radiation will enter it, and end up in a loop. So although tiny wormholes do exist, and it may be possible to inflate one someday, it won’t last long enough to be of any use as a time machine.” Thorne and others have surmised that an “exotic material” with negative mass could prop open the throat of a wormhole big enough and long enough for someone or something to pass, but such material currently doesn’t exist.

IF I COULD TURN BACK TIME: GOING BACK TO THE FUTURE After multiple tests, diagnostic exams, and interviews, the two FEU Tech students will take STEP back to the Innovator X-10 and reenter the wormhole, through which they will be instantly transported back 10 years ago and arrive shortly after entering the wormhole the first time. If their trip is successful, the people of the past will communicate with people of the future, and the Innovator X-10 will reengage near light speed travel, this time unmanned, for an even farther trip down the river of time. —Is it possible? Although time travel forward seems like a possibility (albeit one really far from reality at the moment), time travel backward appears to be unlikely. According to Professor Hawking, one fundamental rule governs the cosmos: causes come before effects. If, for example, our FEU Tech student in the scenario above looked through the wormhole at himself 10 years ago and killed his past self with a gun, how could he be alive to shoot the gun? There’s no room in the universe for a paradox like this one; time is a river that flows in one direction. That’s why some physicists suggest that, for backward time travel to be possible, we wouldn’t actually be traveling to the past of our own timeline—it would be more like interdimensional travel, i.e. traveling to an alternate timeline, perhaps of an alternate world, or alternate dimension. For example, the “many worlds” theory states that every alternate history or future represents an actual world, that there are an infinite number of universes where every possible outcome actually happened. So, to avoid the paradoxes associated with backward time travel, a time traveler would have to visit an alternate version of his timeline in one of the infinite number of alternate realities— if he killed his past self in a parallel universe, he wouldn’t actually be killing “himself,” which keeps the universe in check and a paradox doesn’t throw logic right out the window. This all seems like complete science fiction, right? But only time can tell how many secrets of the universe(s) we’ll uncover in the future. ◊

THE STAT WHIZ JOMAR CALAUOD By Angel P. Manalad

Beating Ateneo and UP at the Philippines Statistics Quiz in NCR was something Jomar B. Calauod didn’t expect to achieve. As a 1st year BS Electronics Engineering student at FEU Institute of Technology, he joined the competition in order to bring out the best of his abilities and keep his mind set on competing against himself rather than others. Prior to bagging first place at the Philippines Statistics Quiz competition, Jomar was a Regional Finalist for the Science Quiz Bee, an MTAP.DePed sector finalist, and received other various awards as a high school student. Being an accomplished student, Jomar knew then that in order to succeed he should choose the right school for expanding his knowledge and skills. “I was on my way to PUP Taguig when I saw the website of FEU Tech and was impressed by the stories and accomplishments of the students. It made me feel like I wanted to step out of my comfort zone. Then I saw the application for an SM scholar, and I was able to qualify,” Jomar shared. “It has really changed my life.” During his free time, Jomar enjoys building robots, playing Pokémon games, and reading. When asked how he imagines himself in 10 years, the stat quiz champ says that he dreams of working for NASA as an astronautics engineer. To further hone his academic abilities, Jomar will soon be competing at the Search for Math Wizards competition at the Technological University of the Philippines.

“ never stop trying to do your best.

For Jomar, success is about pushing forward and constantly trying to improve.

TOPNOTCHER THE GENIUS OF JUNES By Francis Fitzgerald S. Intal and Angel P. Manalad • Photo by Kim Magpantay

F

EU Tech magna cum laude graduate and Electronics Engineering Board Exam Topnotcher Junestherry Salvador (“Junes,” for short) is a bright, confident young lady with a quiet brilliance in her eyes. During her interview, her voice had a careful intensity, especially when she talked about her younger years, about losing her father at an early age, and about how she was sent to stay with her grandmother in Bohol while her mother worked to provide for the family. “My mother thought of going abroad but she decided to stay and be with us instead. My youngest sibling was only a few months old then, and it really made me see how my mom had to struggle for our family,” Junes said. Life’s challenges, however, did not stop her brilliance from shining through. With her topnotch grades at Manila Science High School and a stellar performance on FEU Tech’s entrance exam, Junes received a full scholarship to study Electronics Engineering, where she also excelled among her classmates. “Thinking about the hardships my mom faced for us really made me want to study hard and pursue my dreams. There was a time where I didn’t sleep for 3 days straight and was rewarded by being on top of our review class,” she said proudly. Like her mother, who eventually became an FEU faculty member, Junes had a passion for teaching, doing her best to guide her classmates in their study groups, which they affectionately called “Junes’ Review Center.” Even when she was bogged down with projects, a thesis and defense, and plenty of exams, she was always able to help her friends.

Always learn and practice the value of discipline, responsibility, and time management

it will definitely help you set your future

And that’s the true genius of Junes: she can manage her time incredibly well. For example, despite hours spent commuting to and from school, she still stayed on top of everything, maintained excellent grades, and was able to keep an active social life, choosing to watch movies and go on food trips with friends in her spare time. On top of all that, she became an excellent pianist. “Always learn and practice the value of discipline, responsibility, and time management—it will definitely help you set your future,” she said. We have no doubt that Junestherry’s passion and confidence will help her fulfill anything she aspires to accomplish. We look forward to seeing her future!

YANNA UNSTOPPABLE By Francis Fitzgerald S. Intal and Angel P. Manalad • Photo by Kim Magpantay

F

EU Tech CpE cum laude graduate Aianna Tan is a tough girl with a lot of energy and passion, and, when she puts her mind to accomplishing something, she’s all business. But, most of all, she’s friendly, well-read, and knowledgeable of a lot of things, and was a former member of The Innovator. It was great meeting one of our own again. While at FEU Tech, “Yanna” (her nickname) was an extremely active student, one who had many roles on campus. She was a scholar, a writer, a poet, a keynote speaker, an essay contest winner, a pageant queen (2012 iTam Ambassador), a 1st runner-up winner at a national pageant for engineers, a national oratorical competition contestant, a Leadership Award winner—the list goes on and on. She’s definitely no wallflower, but, according to Yanna, she was a bit of an introvert as a youth, and it wasn’t until her more formative years did she become more outgoing and competitive, especially with grades. She graduated salutatorian from preparatory school and valedictorian from high school. “I was very focused on academics. You could call me a bookworm. I didn’t have many friends! But I definitely came out of my shell during college.” she says, laughing. When she joined FEU Tech, she received the President Scholarship, which covered all tuition costs and provided a monthly allowance. “If not for my scholarship, I don’t think I could’ve pursued my dream of being an engineer,” the former FEU Tech student shares. “I chose Computer Engineering because I really found it innovative and in demand. Even when things got difficult at times, I refused to quit. If you really want something, the whole universe conspires with you—you become unstoppable.”

if you really want something, the whole universe conspires with you— you become unstoppable.

Shortly after graduation, Yanna was hired as an Incident Management Analyst for Chevron, one of the world’s biggest energy companies. In her spare time, she continues to write and hopes to inspire others with words. Check out her blog for more about the amazing Yanna (aliannatan.tumblr.com)

tarting the show was a dance performance from a group of Civil Engineering students (who also won this year’s Clash of the iTams competition), followed by a dance group from Mechanical Engineering, and then singers from Information Technology, who serenaded the crowd with a stunning vocal performance. An all-male group of Computer Science students gave a blazing dance number, followed by singers from Computer Science and Civil Engineering.

The rest of the night consisted of food, games, partying, and dancing on the open floor. FEU Tech’s Exude Dancers also gave a crowd-pleasing performance. To end the event, Vanessa Manahan and Leonel Camacho were chosen as Stars of the Night and were ceremoniously crowned. Freshmen night is an annual must-attend event, a social gathering and welcoming party for all FEU Tech’s freshmen. Hundreds of freshmen attend for a thrilling and memorable experience. Each year gets bigger and better than the last. Congratulations to the Student Coordinating Council, our freshmen students, and organizers from Student Affairs and Community Services office for a job well done! ◊

You know your campus. You know Google. Now, let’s put the two together.

MY LIFE WITH GOOGLE FEU Tech’s Google Student Ambassador

The Google Student Ambassador Program is an opportunity for students to act as liaisons between Google and their universities. They learn about innovative Google products and programs, plan and host fun campus events, act as campus contacts for Google teams, and help Google better understand each university’s culture. Our own Nathaniel John V. Castro (BSCS) is one of them. Here’s what he has to say. One of the best and most life changing moments of my life had just started to unfold. I can never forget the day when the confirmation email was sent to us last May 2. I was just lying in my bed when I saw the email notification—me and Mike Nicole Cajurao [also from FEU Tech] were accepted! It all felt like a dream!

Nathaniel John V. Castro Elaine Anne D. Mercado

Ever since I became a Computer Science student here at FEU Institute of Technology, I dreamed of working at Google be cause Google provides an excellent working experience. I applied for this program online last March and just filled out an application form. Nothing to lose, but so much to gain—I wanted to expand my horizons. Being a Google Student Ambassador was once my dream, but then it became real. I never thought it would come true. It was indeed a great feeling, and I’m forever grateful to the ITE and HSC departments for their full support. When I received my acceptance letter from Google, it was them who took charge and helped me to get ready for the Google Student Ambassador Southeast Asia Summit, in Cebu Philippines [Philippines was the host for this year’s Google Summit]. After the summit, Mike and I started our Official GSA duties. We went to different universities here in Manila to conduct talks, including Arellano University and MAPUA Institute of Technology. Almost 4,000 people came to these talks. We also conducted Google Apps training for FEU Tech Student Leaders. We have a lot more planned for our fellow iTamaraws in the coming months, including seminars on how to join the Google Student Amabassador program. My advice to them? Just be Googley!

SUCCESSFUL ALUMNI

U

MIKE VS.

S? Canada? France? FEU Tech alumnus Mike Sumulong has been there, done that! The Innovator recently asked Mike about his successful career abroad with huge companies like Oracle. Read more to see what he has to say.

What did you enjoy the most about being a student at FEU Tech?

Tell us more about your professional life so far?

The thing I enjoyed the most was FEU Tech’s handson learning approach. I’m not exactly good at learning through reading—I learn better through doing. Hands-on learning complements my learning style pretty well, and the well-equipped computer laboratories really helped a lot. I spent countless hours in those labs working on projects.

My first job was with SPL, which is now Oracle Manila, where I was given the chance to work in US and France. I moved on to NetSuite, but I eventually moved back to Paris to work for Oracle again. I came out of the experience with strong functional and technical skills. I am now a Lead Solutions Architect at Elim Solutions in Canada.

My Internship 1 was with IBM, and my Internship 2 was with Asian Development Bank. They have well-established systems and processes, and I learned how each employee, even an intern, affected the organization as a whole. I learned to see the “big picture” from a real-world perspective, which you don’t usually get by being in a classroom. Now, whatever I do, I know I’m contributing to something bigger, and it pushes me to give my best.

34

THE INNOVATOR | Volume 3 - 1

I credit FEU Tech for my industry-ready IT skills when I was a fresh graduate, which helped me earn the confidence of my seniors when I was first starting out.

How did FEU Tech’s internship program help shape your professional life?

. WORLD Which of your travels abroad have you enjoyed `the most? I enjoyed Paris the most because it was the most challenging. I wasn’t just there for work—I was there to start a new life. I found the language barrier and cultural differences challenging, but it was a good venue to see if my IT skills were at par with my colleagues—and they were!

I had the confidence to perform my job well. I was so proud to see my FEU Tech education really paying off!

Can you share with us one of your most rewarding experiences? My most rewarding experiences involved working with people from different countries. In Canada, it’s not unusual for people from India, Philippines, Romania, Italy, and Poland to be on one team. It’s really enriching to work with people from different backgrounds for a common goal. What advice can you give to our students? All the resources you’ll ever need to build your skill sets are available at FEU Tech, but you’ll only get as much as you put in—it’s all about effort. Companies can literally hire from anywhere in the world now, but you’ll really stand out if you have lots of industry-relevant skills. You need to take advantage of your time at school as much as possible and master as many skills as you can. Make good use of the resources available to you at FEU Tech—you’re blessed to have them. ◊ THE INNOVATOR | Volume 3 - 1

INNOVATIONS Gadget Gate Pass System Marvin B. Apostol, John Carlo S. Andres, Normita P. Oani, and Erica Rose M. Bacus

Anyone with a pricey gadget knows the fear of getting it lost or stolen. That’s why a group of FEU Tech students developed an innovative way of keeping track of their gadgets using QR codes. With this system, if your gadget happens to go missing while on campus, you can rest assured it won’t get too far— a QR code firmly attached to the back of the gadget gets scanned at the security gate, revealing all the details about its true owner and whether or not it’s sitting in the right hands.

When parents send their kids off to college, they want to make sure they stay out of trouble, right? Well, to help them out, these FEU Tech students have created an innovative security system for dormitories. A fingerprint scanning system makes sure the right people get in and the wrong people stay out. And, once the tenant enters the dorm, the system will detect if curfew has been broken and if the person has been drinking. The results are sent via SMS to dorm security—and to the parents!

Wearing a helmet can help save your life in a motorcycle accident, but many riders risk their lives by traveling without one—doing this also violates the law. That’s why these FEU Tech students designed an innovative helmet ignition system, requiring riders to have their helmets in order for their motorcycles to start. Not only does this help ensure the safety of the rider, but it also improves security— without the helmet, the motorcycle can’t start, thus reducing the chances of theft.

The Lover That is Money FREDERICK KANE B. CACNIO Oh how I spent my countless nights, To find you, within my sight And bring you, to the light of day, To love, to protect all the way I call to you in the fervent wind, Hands reach but shoulders pinned A cry that reaches deafened ears, Eyes that scan as beauty nears Greed and jealousy at your side, Your latest love, it is my guide You will be mine, despite confliction, For you are the cure to my addiction I try to shake you from my head, But I need you or else I’m dead To find my seat at the glorious feast, Where even a hero can become a beast But I thank you for the love afar, For I live my days without a scar And though I lack of gold and honey I still endure, oh dearest money Among the Clouds Fluttering by, Without a care; Gently caressed, Oh! Hands so fair An aimless travel, An adamant mood; Carried across Thy whispers that soothe A gentle slumber Of endless love, Gifted joy, from the heavens above.

I lie down and stare up the sky now so bright I wonder if we are worth the fight Struggling myself with these confusions Wishing all of these are just a part of my delusions.

A Diary of Yesterday

AUGUST 27 - 11:00 PM

Destiny really knows how to play with fire. Sometimes it knocks us down in the most unexpected times, taking everything away: Your life, reasons, and even your smile. No one has an idea as to why we deserve such. All I know is that it is life’s way to make us stronger; to mold us to be the person we never ought to be.

(PART 3) BY ELAINE ANNE D. MERCADO

(Stop it, you fangirl.) Option 3: I should tell him that I need time to process things. Then probably talk to him soon.

“To be a strong, unbroken warrior.”

Well, you guessed it right. I chose option 3. He respected my decision and insisted on going home. Did I upset him? I hope not. It was a moment of comfortable silence. He may not notice but this bought me some time to fall in love once again into his dark hazel brown eyes, his priceless smile and his so unfixed hair that he does on purpose. It makes me giggle every time.

I prefer to write in this diary of mine while warm tears are running down my cheeks. It just makes me feel safe and secured. I had some music blasting through my earphones. These things will be my guardian for now, I guess. This will be a long night.

“So, I guess this isn’t goodbye. See you tomorrow?” Charlie whispered. No response. “Hello, earth calling Melody!” He caught my attention by waving his hand in front of my staring-into-space face.

W

“Oh! I was just thinking about -”. I ran out of ideas. Busted. “Never mind, see you!”

ow. It still stings. The pain I felt that night still brings something weird inside me. I remember how he and I were there for each other, but destiny just won’t allow us to be. Not yet. If you don’t remember me, I am Melody Lee, and I am completely in love with a man named Charlie Ray Earl, and welcome to my past. We headed home in silence. He grabbed my hand again, which urged us both to stop walking. “Look Melody. I want to tell you something. Something important.” He cracked. “What is it?” I asked. He stood there, frozen, unable to speak. “Uhm. I… I… have always been glad to be your friend. But you know that I’ll always be here for you. You know that right?” His voice is like he’s going to cry any minute now. God he’s so adorable. “Yes.” I answered. “You. Me. Friends. But I… want you us to be more than that. I love you Melody Lee.” He utterly confessed. What does this mean? It can’t be, I’m not ready. His eyes were focused on mine. I looked down while my cheeks were turning red. I’ve been waiting for this moment. But I don’t know what to say. Well, I have my options. Option 1: Run away and lock myself inside my room FOREVER. (No, that’s too pathetic) Option 2: SCREAM TO DEATH.

He teasingly laughed at me and walked away. “I’ll always be here, no matter what. Ok? Even if it takes us forever.” He said, and walked away. I can’t take my eyes off him and on what he confessed earlier. I am fangirling and all, but I can feel that something’s not right. I can feel that there was pain behind his words. It’s almost 6pm and my mom was watching a movie when my phone vibrated. 5 MISSED CALLS and 16 MESSAGES?! I scanned and noticed that it was from Earl’s mom. I tried calling back. “Hello?” My heart was racing. What could’ve happened? “Hi, Melody. Sorry to bother you, but its Earl… He…” I can hear her heavy sobs, which brought tears to my own eyes. “What happened?!” I screamed. “He… His dad took him out for dinner, and they… hit a truck…” She was really crying hard now. “His dad passed away, but Earl… he was in the hospital. He’s in a coma. We need you Melody.”

see him, there all wounded up. I feel so guilty about earlier. I should’ve told him everything. That he is my best friend, my savior, my life, my boyfriend. Tears were gushing down my cheeks. I stayed for hours, not letting go of his cold hand. I kept on praying that he’d be alright. He needs to be. He has so much ahead of him. We, I, am not ready. I was about to fall asleep when I felt a slight movement. His hands were moving! “Earl? Can you hear me? This is Melody.” His eyes started to open as soon as his lips began to move and utter something I couldn’t understand. “What? Please repeat that again for me Earl.” I whispered still holding his hand. “W-w-where am I?” He uttered. Wait. I’ll call everyone else. I beeped for the nurse to come over. Seconds after, everyone was inside the room: His mom, my mom, the other nurses, and his doctor. “Who are you?” He asked with complete confusion in his face. No, this can’t be. After a series of questions, the doctor said: “Based on the results, I think he’s under Retrogade amnesia. I’m sorry to say but it is the inability to recall memories due to a very traumatic experience. All we can do right now is hope and pray.” “Hey Earl, it is me Melody. Your best friend, remember?” I rushed over to his bed. “I don’t know you. Who are you! Go away!” The eyes that I once fell in love with are now full of fear. For once I felt like I was looking at a different person. NO. Please don’t do this. I ran back home and locked myself in my room, crying all night. I buried myself in the blasting music from my earphones. I grabbed my diary and started writing... Will he ever remember me again? Will I ever get my best friend back?

“Oh my! Ok ,I’ll be there in 10 minutes. Please be strong.” I told my mom everything and headed to the hospital. I was allowed to
