Engr. Christian E. Baldo 2nd place (93.25%), Civil Engineering

No doubt about it, second placer, Civil Engineering Topnotcher Christian Baldo used to be a quiz champ and a math beast. Throughout his college life, this young engineer had won numerous quiz bees and national competitions in math and engineering, often taking down some of the country’s finest. A graduate of Quezon City Academy, Christian first wanted a BS in Mathematics but decided to pursue Civil Engineering at FEU Tech, where he was given an impressive scholarship. He hopes to improve the country’s infrastructure in the future. Despite being an all-around whiz at math, Christian was a typical student. He struggled waking up early for his morning classes, worried about difficult engineering subjects. He would always think of the future a lot and worked hard to succeed. When asked about what inspires him, Christian cites God and his parents, stating that prayer is the source of his success:

“I prayed hard. I made it clear to myself

that only God could bring me this far. To succeed, I needed Him, together with hard work, patience and most importantly, the love and support of my parents.

Engr. Rei Kevin Tungcab 3rd place (91.70%), Civil Engineering

Like many other students, Rei Kevin Tungcab struggled with his subjects. At one point, he almost lost his scholarship. “I almost gave up on my dream of being a Topnotcher. I would not graduate with Latin honors. Even just graduating looked difficult without my scholarship. I felt really bad.” But Kevin managed to survive. With hard work, he was able to keep his scholarship. Although he was not able to graduate with Latin honors, he placed 3rd in the Civil Engineer Board Exam. “I really wanted to bring my parents on stage with me to receive my Latin honors at graduation. They always talked about how happy they would be. The board exam was my last chance. Now, I can still make them proud. They’ll join me on stage when I take my oath. I’m so excited!” When asked what advice he can give to others aspiring to top the board, Kevin says:

“Ask then act. Ask God for help, and then

do everything you can to achieve what you asked for. Nothing will happen if you keep asking but do nothing.

Engr. Jamiel Galimba

7th place (90.90%), Civil Engineering

“I didn’t study well for the board exam to be on top—I just wanted to pass!” laughs the humble FEU Tech scholar and Topnotcher. “It was for my family. We are not well off, and so I dreamt of a better life for them. They were my inspiration to pass the board.” The third of four children, Jamiel grew up in a family with modest means and he knew at an early stage the importance of hard work. “My siblings and I all did our primary and secondary education in public schools. I knew going to college would be financially tough for my family, so I strived hard to gain a scholarship and maintain it.” In his spare time, Jamiel likes to be active. He loves traveling, mountain climbing, spelunking, and exploring beaches. When he’s not off on another adventure or busy with school, he enjoys watching American television dramas like Grey’s Anatomy, Game of Thrones and Prison Break.

“I work hard and, after a lot of effort,

I try to reward myself. to avoid stress, I try not to focus on the future too much. I focus on the present. If I work hard in the present, the future will take care of itself.

Engr. Arnold Cabatian

9th place (90.45%), Civil Engineering

“Plates. Definitely plates!” laughs Arnold when asked about the hardest part of college, referring to the drawings civil engineers use for planning. “They take so much time and patience. You can’t really do much. It’s hard to find time to even study.” But this 9th place topnotcher certainly found ways to make it happen, and thanks to his hard work and sacrifice, he was able to reach his goal of topping the Civil Engineer Board Exam. “Really, my goal was just to make my parents proud. They were my inspiration when I was reviewing for the exam. They kept me going. I’m very happy to have just passed.” Like other students, Arnold tries his best to balance school work, review, and his personal interests. In his free time, he enjoys PC gaming, playing the guitar, and internet surfing. His major goal for the future is simple: he wants to become a successful civil engineer. “Don’t kill yourself reviewing,” he says to others hoping to top the board exam, too.

“Relax your mind whenever you can. Don’t “

drown yourself in review questions. Focus on your weaknesses and improve them. 20

A MOMENT WITH A

LEGEND

“MANNY BELINO DR. MANUEL “MANNY” Director for mechanical engineering department

By Pauline Dominique Andoloy | Photos by Kurt Cayanes

Dr. Manuel Belino, an award winning academician and scholar, is the newly appointed Director of the Mechanical Engineering Department at FEU Institute of Technology. As an educator, he strongly believes that every teacher must show compassion and love for his students. For him, a teacher’s influence to his students does not end in the classroom, but extends and affects every aspect of their lives. The measure of one’s effectiveness as a good teacher can be seen through the impact he has made on his students’ lives and outlook. Doc B, as he is fondly called by his students and colleagues, aims to go beyond being a program director and professor. He wants to be regarded as a mentor, a teacher, counselor, advisor, a surrogate father and a friend rolled into one. It is important for him to demonstrate concern not only in the area of academics, but in the other dimensions of students’ lives as well. A self-confessed bookworm, Dr. Belino shared that he has a mini-library at home. He firmly believes that in order to be an efficient teacher, one must continuously update himself. When asked about what advice he can give to the students, he offered this meaningful suggestion: “The classroom session is just a catalyst for

further learning; it should lead you to study further. Do not just depend on the lecture of the faculty members.” To inspire students, he shared his own experiences as a youth. He had impressive marks in Science and Math when he was in high school which prompted him to take up Engineering. He shared that he also faced difficulties when he was in college particularly with the professors who failed to teach properly. However, that did not hinder the young Belino to achieve his goals. He resorted to doubling his efforts and studying his chosen field the best he could. Before becoming the new Director of Mechanical Engineering, Dr. Belino was once the Dean of the School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at Mapua Institute of Technology and Associate Dean of the College of Engineering of De La Salle University. He has a BS in Mechanical Engineering and a Master of Engineering Education; he is also a Ph.D candidate in Mechanical Engineering. Dr. B’s passion for more learning was further demonstrated when he finished a Master’s degree in Theological Studies with a concentration in Ethics at Harvard University and a Doctorate in Religious and

Values Education specializing in Engineering Ethics at De La Salle University. With several awards under his sleeve, Dr. Belino continues to impress us with his dedication as a teacher, scholar, and Director. • Outstanding Faculty Adviser given by The American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Airconditioning Engineers • 2005 Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Teacher Award for Higher Education • Mapua’s Outstanding Alumnus Award • DLSU’s Outstanding Mechanical Engineer in the field of education • DLSU’s Lorenzo Tañada Award for Exemplary Lasallian Values The humble Director concludes and inspires everyone by saying: “My greatest achievement as far as I’m concerned is to see my students succeed in their careers and in their lives.” His humility, compassion, concern and humor are the reasons why Dr. Manuel Belino is deeply loved and admired by his students.
