I
’m now in my final year of college, but when asked, ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’ my system malfunctions, the gears stop turning: answer not found.
While some search for a passion to follow, I have the problem of having too many. A jack of all trades—a journalist, scriptwriter, designer, developer, volunteer, student leader—I juggle these roles on a regular basis. It’s difficult to choose just one. I want to explore them all.
But it’s a happy problem. It gives me the opportunity to collaborate with different people, assume different responsibilities, and play different roles.
I’ve explored many different worlds, I’ve lived many different lives. Still, I feel like I need more focus in my life, and, if you’re like me, you might
take inspiration from this edition of The Innovator where we talk to the Magnificent Seven, FEU Tech’s seven Engineering Topnotchers, seven real young people with seven real stories of hard work, focus, and passion.
Perhaps, reading about the very real human struggle behind their success
will one day help us all stand up proudly, look life straight in the eye, and say, “When I grow up, I want to be exactly what I am now: passionate.”
Find your passion, friends—and thanks for reading!

TECHNO FEST FEU Tech’s Student Coordinating Council hosted its annual Techno Fest from April 27 to 30, at the FEU Tech Building. This event was a 4-day celebration of technological innovation and discovery. Organizers anticipated it as the biggest Techno Fest yet, with more exhibits, more shows, and more fun. The Industry’s latest advancements in technology were exhibited by big name companies, giving the students the opportunity to experience the world’s next wave of innovations before others. Techno Fest also featured mega entrepreneur and Silicon Valley giant Mr. Diosdado “Dado” Banatao as guest speaker! Mr. Banatao was also gracious enough to be the speaker for FEU Tech’s 42nd Commencement Exercises. How cool is that!

On day one, Techno Fest was extremely fortunate to have Diosdado “Dado” Banatao as a speaker. Mr. Banatao is known as the “Filipino Bill Gates” and the “Father of the Semi-Conductor,” and he’s credited for revolutionizing the computer as we know it today. In fact, it’s believed that his innovations make up 30% of every computer and laptop in the world. Mr. Banatao also created the first single-chip, 16-bit microprocessor-based calculator; created the first enhanced graphics adapter chip set; pioneered the local bus PCI concept for PC; and developed the first Windows graphics accelerator chip. He is also credited for developing key semiconductor technologies, being part of the team that made GPS systems an everyday consumer product, and co-designing Boeing’s 747 jet airliner. Before his speeech, Mr. Banatao toured the FEU Tech student lobby, visited student exhibits, and graciously shared some of his thoughts, experiences, and advice with our FEU Tech community.
“
Accompanying Mr. Banatao was Chair of FEU Mr. Aurelio Montinola III and FEU Tech’s Executive Director Mr. Benson Tan.
Let’s not use the word ‘Invention.’ For me, innovation is more important than invention.

Engr. junestherry salvador
10th place (85.3%), electronics Engineering FEU Tech magna cum laude graduate and Electronics Engineering Board Exam Topnotcher (10th place) Junestherry Salvador is a bright, confident young lady with a quiet brilliance in her eyes. During her interview, her voice had a careful intensity, especially when she talked about her younger years, about losing her father at an early age, and about how she was sent to stay with her grandmother in Bohol while her mother worked to provide for the family. “My mother thought of going abroad but she decided to stay and be with us instead. My youngest sibling was only a few months old then, and it really made me see how my mom had to struggle for our family,” Junestherry said. Life’s challenges, however, did not stop her brilliance from shining through. With her topnotch grades at Manila Science High School and a stellar performance on FEU Tech’s entrance exam, Junestherry received a full scholarship to study Electronics Engineering, where she also excelled among her classmates. “Thinking about the hardships my mom faced for us really made me want to study hard and pursue my dreams. There was a time where I didn’t sleep for 3 days straight and was rewarded by being on top of our review class,” she said proudly.
Engr. Mark Anthony Teodoro 3rd place (88.8%), electrical engineering
Mark Anthony, FEU Tech cum laude graduate, is the proud son of a jeepney driver and a stay-at-home mother, and, thanks to his hard work and perseverance, he has been able to show that social status means nothing in becoming successful. He recalls how he and his siblings dreamt of being the ones to support their parents instead of the other way around, and Mark Anthony is truly on his way to making this a reality. During his time at FEU Tech, he was a consistent FEU Tech SM Foundation scholar. Despite being a hard worker, he was able to have fun and enjoy playing computer games with his friends. “I tried my best to balance my schedule and divide my time between studies and relaxation. I admit, I’m a gamer—I play DOTA, LOL and Counter Strike!” he said with a laugh. “But I made sure to study hard. I believe that that’s what it takes to be a successful person. Balance.” The 22-year old Cum Laude from Malabon is now an FEU Tech faculty member, and it’s safe to say that Mark Anthony has proven that the conditions of your birth do not define who you are. With the right dedication and attitude, success is always possible!

Engr. marcjay s. pucyutan
4th place (88.7%), electrical Engineering The eldest son of four siblings, MarcJay Pucyutan knows what it’s like to have big expectations on his shoulders, and becoming an Engineering Board topnotcher is just one step of many. But his journey to the top has had many stopovers. A graduate from Muntinlupa Science Highschool, he first majored in Math at UP Diliman, then transferred to UP Los Baños to study Electrical Engineering. “I was always late for class, always out with my friends, and just having fun. I was a mess—my life was a mess,” he recounted. Finally, his wake up call came when his father had a serious talk with him about his future. “He told me that finishing college was the only legacy he could give me, and it would be the greatest gift that I could give him and my mom, and that I shouldn’t take that away from them.” Marcjay found his way to FEU Tech and back to Engineering. “Upon setting foot at FEU Tech, I already made it my goal to top the board. That was what I set myself to achieve.” He was really set on graduating the second time around and even became an academic scholar. And, best of all, he and his father became close again. Now, a certified Engineer, the 24-year-old plans to give back to FEU Tech for being his saving grace and is now part of the College’s faculty.
Engr. harvey john e. calalang
9th place (86.3%), electrical Engineering
“The feeling is very fulfilling, especially when people start to recognize and commend you for your diligence. Think of what that might feel like. Hold it like it belongs to you. Above all else, never forget to live life and enjoy college.” This is Harvey’s advice to other students still targeting the top of the board exam. The true-blue Bulakenyo from Obando and big Marvel Comics fan graduated cum laude and was also an FEU Tech SM Foundation Scholarship recipient and an FEU Tech Entrance Merit Scholar. Despite his accomplishments, Harvey stays humble and says he works hard to make his parents proud. “When I entered college, I told myself that I would strive to be the best possible version of myself. I dreamt of receiving awards and honors all for the happiness of my parents. All I ever wanted was to give back to them. Their hardships really meant a lot to me, and I’m so happy now that I finally have something to offer them back,” Harvey said with a smile.

Engr. john angelo g. cruz 7th place (90.8%), civil Engineering
John Angleo Cruz never expected to be a certified engineer—even after becoming an FEU Tech cum laude graduate and topnotcher, he’s still a bit surprised. “I never expected to be a topnotcher because the exam was so difficult, especially the mathematics portion,” the 21-yearold shared. “When the results came out, I was upset that maybe I didn’t make it to the top 10, so I closed my eyes for a while, and thankfully I saw my name in 7th place. God is really good!” Life wasn’t easy for John Angelo as a kid, who was raised and supported by his grandparents alone, but he didn’t let adversity stop him from achieving. “My grandparents are really the reason why I work hard,” he said with eyes growing moist. “Now, I can finally design and build a house for them.” John Angelo was also a President’s Scholarship awardee during his first three years of school at FEU Tech, and an SM Foundation scholar during his terminal year. “You should have guts and have plenty of strategies and tactics to become a successful person—hard work and perseverance are only a small part of the recipe. Never be afraid. You might surpise yourself with what you can accomplish!”

Engr. jenes P. Borais
8th place (90.35%), civil Engineering Jenes has definitely got brains—he’s a President’s Scholar awardee, an FEU Tech SM Foundation Scholar, and a cum laude graduate. What drives him to succeed? Jenes says it’s his parents. “My parents are my stronghold. My hard work is nothing compared to their smiles. They never stopped inspiring and encouraging me to study hard for a bright future. “There is also my strong desire to do well in my career. I have long wanted to be an engineer, and I always remind myself to do whatever it takes to succeed, even if that means many nights of sleep deprivation and plate designing. Oh, my God! Plate designing!” he said with a laugh. To unwind, Jenes likes to play billiards, badminton, and computer games. “Topnotchers should not be serious about everything—they just have to be sure to keep their goals clear. Anyone can be a Topnotcher. As long as you study and work hard to reach your dream of becoming a Topnotcher, you can be one.” Jenes plans on taking his Master’s degree and wants to teach at FEU Tech while gaining experience in the field.

You know your campus. You know Google. Now, let’s put the two together.
MIKE CAJURAO
FEU Tech’s Google Student Ambassador
Mike Cajurao Redvan Acosta
What is the Google Student Ambassador program?
What are the qualifications for being a GSA?
Google Student Ambassador (GSA) is a program specially designed by Google for students around the world to act as a liaison between universities and Google. The program aims to make young student leaders globally competitive. GSA strives to educate universities about the benefits of using Google products like Google Apps for Education, Youtube, Gmail, G+, and so on.
A Google Student Ambassador must be enrolled in full-time undergraduate or postgraduate study and be available 10 hours per month to spend on Google activities. A GSA must be very familiar with Google products and be involved in student organizations and activities.
What is the most valuable thing that Google has taught you?
You just have to keep yourself updated with the latest Google Student Ambassador Program locations, dates and application processes for your local region. You can always check their website for information.
Aside from learning the ins and outs of Google and their products, the most valuable thing I have learned is to be ‘Googley’ and do cool things that matter while still having fun. Google teaches us how to create projects that are both enjoyable and meaningful. How do you strive to educate universities about the benefits of using Google products? GSAs are like global extensions of Google. They disseminate information and educate each university about the many benefits of using Google products and how they can be helpful in their daily lives. We exhibit the primary features of Google products through seminars and events.
How do students become a GSA?
[https://www.google.com.ph/edu/programs/student-ambassador-program] What advice do you have to all the aspiring GSAs out there? Be proactive. Involve yourself in your school activities. At FEU Tech, we surely have a lot of activities to choose from. Crave for knowledge and never get tired of acquiring it. Set goals and priorities so you will know when to say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to opportunities. Most of all, do cool things that matter! ◊

Mr. Sacar shares that it really takes a lot of hard work and dedication to review and prepare for each competition. He recognizes the responsibility of carrying the school’s name, and he tries to honor it by doing his best and inspiring more students to join competitions. For those who aspire to be a Math and Physics whiz like him, Mr. Sacar’s advice is to try as hard as you can and leave no regrets: “Practice your hardest, work your hardest, be passionate, and be positive—that’s all you need, both in competition and in life.” Mr. Sacar continues to train for more competitions and hopes to bring more honors to the FEU Tech Community. Keep up the awesome work, Hisham Sacar! ◊

undiscovered: street photographer John Alperr Padiernos By Francis Fitzgerald S. Intal
A young man sits quietly in The Innovator office with his friends. His movements are modest, unobtrusive—his companions are boisterous, overwhelming. The young man is funny, his humor soft like a story overheard at a party. His companions call him “teacher.” His skill is hiding, his art is vision. He teaches them how to see.

“In street photography, you have to be patient—you hide a lot. You wait a long time for the perfect moment. You can’t be in a hurry,” says John Alperr Padiernos, 19, BSITDA. “If you’re discovered, the vision gets ruined.” What is street photography? “The subjects are humans. It’s the interaction between humans in the street. It’s different than with models. You don’t tell people to pose. They’re not staged. They do their normal thing. What they think is ‘nonsense’ becomes ‘full of sense.’ Their lives become clearer.” His friends call him Alperr. Alperr grew up in Tondo, Manila. His eldest brother supports his schooling. Alperr spends a lot of time watching people. 90% of his photos are taken with just his phone. “Don’t be fooled. Expensive camera equipment is great, but it’s not always about the equipment. It’s about your eyes—your vision. It’s appreciating life around you.” He hides. He waits. He captures a story. The “decisive moment.”
He doesn’t force the scene, doesn’t manipulate his photos. He wants the stories to be organic. “If you grow up with a lot of poor people, you see the true meaning in their everyday lives. People think the lives of poor people aren’t important, but through street photography you show the true meaning—their hopes, dreams, struggles— you show their humanity. Just like a painting, every picture tells a deeper story” His “vision” has found appreciation in many places. He’s been featured at exhibits abroad in Boston (Massachusetts, US) and India, and locally by SM Inc. His photos trend on the Internet. Recently, he taught photojournalism at a public school and was recognized by the Department of Education. In The Innovator office, his companions tell us about Alperr’s photography. Alperr is shy, shows us a few pictures on his phone. We’re impressed. We want to see more—where have you been hiding, Alperr? ◊ Check out more of Alperr’s shots at facebook.com/alperr.padiernos

Among the Clouds FREDERICK KANE B. CACNIO
Writer: The Forgotten Piece GLADYS DIANE DE MESA I am the story behind the story of his stories I am the page behind the page of his pages I am the barrier behind the barrier of every barriers For I am the hero of thy hero, of all heroes No man of the universe, nor dead or alive Have told the skit of my fear, my lone, and my jive Wounded by all pages mean, Scared that somehow thy lord might see Fear no peer, peer no fear Life goes still whether I am far or near Blessed by these haunting lives to tell Cursed by this life I have to bear Hoist the colour to fight, I’m not Take the knives to stab, I did not Scream a vengeance to death, I cannot Cause thy hoist, stab and scream are for me to write Have you not heard the cry of my tears, As I kneel down for my land’s tale? Yes, I grieve in every second of my fear Cause someday, I know my letters would fail Ask for praises and recognition, no more Just respect and fair judgment, once more For y’all are my heavenly piece of life That a hero behind heroes will stand for right Forward and I will forward, fall and I will follow Breathe and live for thy land seeks A hero that that this ink has to speak So die and I will die, be lost and I will follow

From One Point to the Other RAJANAH SARMIENTO Looking outside my window I started to draw conclusions, From a certain experience I never wish to happen. A lot of what if comes from my mind, And regret follows. A little mistake can hurt you and the person you loved, In which I never wanted to. But, I can’t prevent it to happen, What should I do? It is hard to choose one decision from the other, Most especially when everything is at stake. But then, I chose to hurt them Even though it isn’t my intention. I can’t bring back the past anymore, But I can change what’s in reality. Forgiveness is something you should do sincerely, And that’s what I did. I never thought they would still accept me, Accept the whole me. But the point of this is that I’ve learned, Mistakes is inevitable, But there’s two word that comes after it. Learn from it, And avoid doing it again!
Fluttering by, Without a care; Gently caressed, Oh! Hands so fair. An aimless travel, An adamant mood; Carried across Thy whispers that soothe. A gentle slumber Of endless love, Gifted joy, from the heavens above.
When I Dream ALIANNA A. TAN When I dream, I dream high I soar like an eagle in the sky To reach the clouds, I lift myself up and fly Where angels live and the evil dies When I dream, I dream big As huge and vast as the ocean deep As gigantic as the universe where we live To conquer the world the way I believe. When I dream, I dream so hard Irrevocably bursting out the guts in my heart Fear, doubt, dilemma – just at the start But I do not let them tear my drive apart. When I dream, I dream with faith Seeking goodness for heaven’s sake Through storms and seas I can’t be tamed Because I am living and clinging on to his name When I dream, I dream quietly Asking for guidance and begging for mercy Patiently waiting for the world to see That my dream has finally found its way to me.
A Diary of Yesterday
(PART 4) BY ELAINE ANNE D. MERCADO
OCTOBER 16 8:54 PM
I
Your eyes provide me the reason to wake up every morning. You became the wanderlust to my soul, a whimsical and inevitable part of me. You were my hero, my protector, my best friend. I still remember that day when I told you my darkest fears, my strengths, my weaknesses; when I trusted you every inch of my scar, every second of my past.
I was cleaning up my stuff when I saw this forgotten slate of thoughts, a percentage of my past that I wish would wither away together with my memories of him.
You were empathic about it and you made me feel less alone. Your enigmatic stare made me feel like it was all right, that I am alright.
But still he left me without a single word. Fate killed us both when spots started lighting up on every test. I believed that we could do it. Almost.
“Everything will be okay. No one can hurt you as long as I’m here. Understand?” You promised on a Thursday night.
It’s already 6:00 am and here I’m overthinking with tears cuddling me. Have you ever asked yourself, “What if life has its alternate ending and I am given options?” Would I choose those that require less pain? Would I dare to take less risks? To unlove someone? I was thinking of throwing all of this away. But should I? Can I?
I love how you become awkward over situations like these. On how your hands shake when you’re trying to reach for mine, when you stutter over the words that mean the most. Each day became a frame-worthy entry in my diary. It was how you hugged all parts of my entirety, on how you held me every time like it was our last. See, we were once perfect. But I guess we were made to meet in a different time, in a different dimension. When and where, no one knows. But I’m sure of one thing; that this heart of mine would never forget you. I’d forever be grateful to you being a part of me. I’d forever be grateful for us. Thank you for every moment that you made me feel more than enough, even more than perfect. Thank you for being my hero, my superman. My one and only Charlie. With great love, Melody.
t’s been 5 years since I started waking up to silence knowing I’d never hear his voice again. I coped knowing I could never take a step back. Nothing.
I never stopped reading him pages of my diary, or rather pieces of our story, hoping he’d remember a thing.
Knowing that these thoughts won’t do me any good on a Sunday morning, I grabbed my bag and headed to my favorite café a few blocks away. I brought my diary with me and a book, just in case. “Come on, Melody. Try to stop living in the past, move on.” I reminded myself. When I got there, I did the usual and ordered my favorite java chip latte and tried finding a seat. Woah, this place is a bit crowded today. At the far left corner, I noticed the only empty seat next to a guy in a black shirt. I swore I’d seen him before. Maybe in a magazine, photograph, I couldn’t put my finger on it. He had his earphones on and he was drowning in writing in his leather bound journal. Maybe he wouldn’t mind me sitting next to him. I’d behave, I swore. “Excuse me sir, is this seat taken? Would you mind if I…” I don’t know if he heard me above his blasting rock music, but he seemed to notice me, pulled his earphones out and looked at me in deep confusion. Those eyes. Those same nostalgic eyes. That nose, those pale glistening irises staring and melting my soul… I dropped my coffee not minding where it spilled or landed. I froze. No, it couldn’t be. “You?” We both stuttered. The End. ◊ THE INNOVATOR | Volume 3 - 2
