ighting for a cab during rush hour, competing for the last slice of cheesecake at a busy food court, stalking a table of people who’ve overstayed their welcome at a crowded restaurant (What’re they doing? Camping?!) If these scenes look familiar to you, then you know the struggle is real: Life is a competition, and the competition is getting fierce. On top of all that, us college students also have to fight the familiar uphill battle with attending classes, maintaining grades, and keeping a decent social life.

Dustin Olan

I guess it’s fitting then that this issue of The Innovator is heavy with features about student competitors. These special young people can teach us how to go above and beyond life’s daily challenges to become such stuff as dreams are made on.

Francis Dait

Reading, for example, about Team FEU Tech’s entry into Shell Eco-marathon Asia may inspire us to challenge the world too and show everyone what we’re made of.

Our champion quizzers may teach us to go out, put our brains into overdrive, and beat out other Colleges in big academic competitions. And, of course, our champion FEU MBT team, who, despite last year’s big upset, was able to bring home FEU’s 20th UAAP title. Maybe they can teach us life’s greatest lesson: never give up. All of these special young people are winning at life, and they’re doing it by being fiercer and more competitive than life itself. So, be fiercer than life, friends—and thanks for reading!

Multinational oil and gas company Shell held its annual Eco-marathon Asia, a smarter mobility competition and street circuit challenge, at Rizal Park, Manila, from March 3 to 6. FEU Tech’s entry was a hyper efficient battery electric car, dubbed the iTam Mobile, draped in the green and gold of its alma mater. Check it out! THE INNOVATOR | Volume 3 - 3

127 student teams came from all over Asia Pacific and the Middle East to join the competition, including 29 teams from across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Participants were challenged to design and build their own hyper-efficient cars of the future and find out whose car could run the farthest on a single liter of fuel. The competition was divided into two major categories, Urban Concept and Prototype, and subdivided into methods of propulsion, including electric, gasoline, diesel, CNG, alternative fuels, and hydrogen.

FEU Tech’s hyper-efficient battery electric car, the iTam Mobile, was entered under the Urban Concept category. Entries in this category are considered potential project studies for cars to be mass produced in the future. The iTam Mobile was able to pass preliminary qualifiers and compete in the final round. Team FEU Tech received major media attention for their efforts, including an interview with GMA7 and a guest spot on DZRH News Radio.

After winning the 2015 UAAP Men’s Basketball Championship, the FEU Tamaraws joined FEU Tech for autograph signing, picture pictorial, video interviews, and a friendly volleyball game with the current Lady Tamaraws Volleyball Team and alumni players, culminating their visit with a big rooftop celebration overlooking the entire city. Recovering from last year’s big upset, the FEU Tamaraws charged their way to victory, reclaiming the 2015 UAAP basketball championship title and defeating UST’s Growling Tigers in a classic do-or-die game 3 of the finals, in December. The last time the two teams had clashed in the finals was in 1979. This is the Tamaraws’ first championship title in 10 years, having come up short during their last three finals appearances in 2010, 2011, and 2014. But, after a remarkable 2015 season, which included a 9-game winning streak in an 11-3 showing in the elimination round, FEU now has huge bragging rights and a 20th ring to add to its finger.

Cheering lines of gold shirts welcomed the FEU Tamaraws to FEU Tech, where the players met with fans, signed autographs, and posed for pictures. During a video interview with Internet host Ms. Jonah Tan, the players revealed their playful sides, many claiming to be experts at sleeping, playing video games, and frying hot dogs.

lectronics Engineering student Mark Eullysis Alzaga is making his mark on the world of math competitions. His achievements are numerous, but, just to name a few, he was crowned champion of the 2016 Search for Most Outstanding MATHlete at UP Los Banõs, champion of Clash of the Brains Version 2016 at Polytechnic University of the Philippines – Taguig, and 1st Runner-up at Brodkast ng Talino 2016 at Technological University of the Philippines – Manila. Alzaga was also part of the championship teams of the IECEP – Quiz Bowl 2015 at Lyceum of the Philippines University – Manila, MTAPTL Math Count 2016 Team Category at the Araneta Center, Clash of the Brains Version 2016 at Polytechnic University of the Philippines – Taguig, and the 17th Interschool Brain Collision 2016 at Saint Louis University – Baguio City. Alazaga’s advice to others: “Speed is the key to success. Not only in quizzes but in life. Each of us has to face many difficult problems, and we must be quick about it because the longer we delay the solution, the harder it will be to conquer. Like competition, life has a time limit: Answer it quick and as best as you can—don’t be afraid of mistakes. It’s all part of the game.”

We salute you, Mark Eullysis Alzaga—you make us all proud! ◊

Payome with Android Mobile Application is a recommendation social network through which users can post pics of food and places with their recommendations, descriptions, suggested budgets, and locations, while other users can evaluate their posts through comments, “likes,” and “dislikes,” and even flag inappropriate posts. Payome offers simple search or advanced search, the latter allowing users to specify particular foods, places, budgets, and/or reviews by other specific users. Google Maps API is incorporated in every post to pinpoint location, and a post calendar module and visual story teller lets users see their posts in timeline form. The app also shows notifications, followers, users followed, and user ratings, and provides special options for business owners to promote their businesses. The client for this project is Alexander De Leon, tech entrepreneur and former Google Tech Lead. How cool is that!

faculty SPOTLIGHT:

benjamin marciano math & Physical Sciences (MPS) The College is building a strong legacy of champion quizzers, and working hard to train them is one of their coaches, MPS faculty member Professor Benjamin Labarinto Marciano Jr. Professor Marciano’s dedication to his quizzers is strong: he enjoys designing for them difficult math practice questions, and says, “As long as I see [them] giving their all during contest, I will always be motivated to train them more and bring the best out of them.” After receiving a BS and an MS in Mathematics from the University of the Philippines (UP), the 35 year old math professor has been coaching math teams since 2002 and has developed an extensive list of accomplishments. With his two kids as inspiration, he hopes to finish his Ph.D. soon. When asked what others can do to be a champion quizzer, Professor Marciano says, “You have to be smart with what you already know. Quizzing is not just about amassing vast amounts of knowledge. It’s more about using your existing knowledge to make educated guesses and connects. And, once you’re in competition, don’t be intimidated by names and reputations. You are there to compete and win, not just to acquire experience, so focus on that. Be determined.” We salute you, Professor Marciano! ◊

The Sound of Defeat Gladys Diane de Mesa

Some Names are Poison Czaleris Cerrero

I stand, barefoot on the land, with thorns and thistles, Nothing but this unkind wind embracing my body and soul, Allied once, forgotten twice, counted as many stars are them—

i. I whispered your name Once more for the last time, It stung like poison ivy on the tip of my tongue, But I let you dangle there for a little while, Then a little longer,

Today was dark, lone not the stars but my heart Lost in a battle, no suit of armor and sword— I, thy greatest defeat, greatest forfeit, thy ‘nothing to me’ Own nothing but fear and fate meant for the grave, I sheltered all thy hope, nurtured all thy covenant bequeathed, But punished by this unforgotten sorrow you owe to keep— Come, come and take the arrow speared through my veins Lessen my pain the death has cursed unto me, love, Lessen my tear the heaven has denied to speak, love, Stand with me, with thorns and thistles pierced within me— Today was dark, falling not the dreams but my heart.

My Victory Over You Maria Angela Dela Vega You were a lot of things. You were my paper when I wanted to write every single detail of my day. You let me use you without any hesitation that I might rip you out of the pages. You were fire and I was gold. We were too good for each other—maybe that’s why we collided and scattered every single piece of ourselves onto the ground. I let you be my vent, and you consumed me. You consumed my days, my weeks, my time, my energy. You consumed me until nothing was left. I broke my divisions when I should have tightened my reservations. Then there, I fell into your lies when I should have kept my guard. You were my paper, but I let you rip me with promises. You were fire, and I have learned how to benefit from your heat, but suddenly your light had escaped you and it turned you into ice. And I could never get used to the cold. There I would tell you. Nothing was for me. It was not intended for me.

It was for her.

It has always been for her. But she chooses to ignore you and pretend like you never existed, and that is why I am the one holding you, and, yes, I do know that you are secretly wishing it was her. The late night conversations, sweet messages, the flower bouquets, the endless surprises and the forehead kisses, the sky, the moon, the world, the universe, and the love. Everything you ever gave me was for her.

And it bore an aching familiarity, A memory I’d rather forget: Your name and poison ivy, Both destructive But yours was lethal.

I reached for you but you were nowhere to be found. You cut your brown hair and the light in your eyes was replaced by shadows. They say distance makes the heart grow fonder, but distance just seemed to tear us apart. Distance made your heart grow cold and just left mine empty. But then again, thank you. Thank you for setting me free. Thank you for not taking me to the next level. Thank you for not taking the risk. Thank you for giving me the chance to refuse your feelings back. Thank you for my mental state still in equilibrium. Not profound, nor superficial. Thank you, I was able to weigh things out, to see things from a different perspective, to stop encapsulating you completely inside me. Thank you for the little infinity that we had. Don’t take this as a sentiment but a form of regard. Some may call this a heart break but mine was a lesson learned. Maybe I just got our hopes too high that it made us fall too hard. And, yes, you didn’t love me. You just didn’t want to be alone. Or maybe I was just too good for your ego. Or maybe I made you feel better about miseries. Or I was the answer to your longing. But you didn’t love me. Because, for what I know, you don’t destroy the people you love. I will never look at you the same way ever again. I’ve learned too much from distance. Sure, I might revive my love for you but eventually that will also fade because nothing about you or anything that we had ever been is going to be the same. I guess here’s my victory. A defeat that lies within the sweet silence of my agony. The taste of retribution and true solace from a crime I have committed through our feelings. I didn’t lose you, you lost me. And I’m glad it’s over. I will be able to celebrate my victory over you. ◊
