TurkishBritish

From the Editor We are the voice of Turkish and English businesspeople. Dear readers We started our journey with the aim of showcasing Turkish businessworld in England and the business ties between the two countries. The first issue of our magazine “Turkish British” received much appreciation and approval from our readers. So now, we are glad to present our brand new issue and hopefully it will be met with the same level of enthusiasm as our first. Our magazine was a hit in both Turkey and England “Turkish British” is the first and the only magazine in that is concerned with the lives and businesses of Turkish business people in England. It is thought that there are more than 70 thousand companies in England that are owned by Turkish people. That’s quite a lot for any economy, including England. We as Turkish British magazine, continue our work while keeping Turkish and British business people in the center of our focus. We would like to thank our friends, businesses and colleagues for believing in us and showing their support. Our first issue was read by more than 40 thousand people online. More than 2000 copies were downloaded as PDF files. The printed versions of our magazine were posted to many addresses and were distributed in many events and places across London. What’s in our new issue? Turkish British is full of fresh and unique topics this month. Since it is the summer season, we analyze Turkey’s tourism in our main discussion. Turkey has shown the biggest growth in European tourism activities, and it was a record year for the number of visitors received. Turkey was the second most preferred destination for British tourists in 2018, and it looks like it still is, in 2019. In this issue of our magazine, we have many interesting hot topics about businessworld, the world of arts, social life, England and Turkey. Thank you everyone, for strengthening us with your support. Enjoy our magazine…. More to follow. Ayla Torun, PhD Chief Editor 5

SHORT NEWS

Support From British Politicians British politicians urged the Home Office to fix the unjust adjustments made to the ECAA Ankara Agreement.

After publishing Ankara Agreement dossier on the cover of our magazine, attempts to stop the recent changes made to Ankara Agreement still continues. Thanks to Ceftus and AOTB’s efforts, more than 20 politicians, including the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, the leader of the Liberal Democrats Sir Vince Cable and the former leader of the Green Party Caroline Lucas, have urged the Home Office to stop the application of the retrospective changes made in ECAA Ankara Agreement’s ILR conditions.

O

pen letter included signatures of politicians from six different parties. It was emphasized on the letter that the retrospective changes made to the ECAA Ankara Agreement’s ILR conditions will damage the UK’s reputation for being a stable and fair business environment. It was also underlined that these changes will have a negative impact on thousands of Turkish citizens, who contribute to the social and economical life of this country. Sir David Amess from Conservative Party, the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan , Afzal Khan, Catherine West, Kate Osamor, Lloyd Russell-Moyle, Tulip Siddiq, Alex Sobel, Kate Green, Bambos Charalambous, Virendra Sharma, Siobhain McDonagh, Sandy Martin, Rachael Maskell from Labour Party, Sir Vince Cable, Tom Brake, Layla Moran, Baroness Angela Harris and Baroness Julie Smith from Liberal Democrats, Stuart McDonald and Alison Thewliss from Scottish National Party, Caroline Lucas from Green Party and finally Joan Ryan from Change UK have all stated that the recently hardened retrospective changes are in breach of one of the main principles of Britain’s judicial system and that they should not be applied to ECAA Ankara Agreement ILR holders, who were already here and set up their businesses before the new laws were passed. 10

In the Ankara Agreement dossier of our first issue, lawyers, legal experts and Turkish entrepreneurs talked about the changes made in ECAA Ankara Agreement and the consequent loss of rights.

Until March 16, 2018, Turkish citizens who settled in the UK and set up a business in the frame of ECAA Ankara Agreement were able to apply for ILR after completing 4 years in the country. On March 16, 2018, sudden changes were made to the law, introducing new conditions such as 2.389£ application fee per person, increasing the minimum of 4 years of legal employment obligation to 5 and passing language and culture tests. New rules apply retrospectively to 12.500 Turkish citizens and their families, who already started their lives and businesses in the UK, before the law was passed. They now have to wait for 5 years before obtaining the right to apply for ILR, and families with 2 children now have to pay almost 10.000£ in order to apply.

Energy industry meets in İstanbul Actors of the global energy industry will meet in İstanbul in October. Turkey Energy Forum which will celebrate its 10th year will discuss Turkish energy market in detail and offer new investment opportunities to the participants. Turkey is an advantageous country with regard to renewable energy, because it has a great potential for both wind and solar energy.

H

eart of the Turkish energy industry will beat in İstanbul. The 10th Turkey Energy Forum to be held at Shangri-La Bosphorus Hotel in İstanbul between October 2 and October 3, 2019 will bring the local and foreign substantial actors of the energy industry together. The 10th Turkey Energy Forum sponsored by Foreign Economic Relations Board, British Chamber of Commerce and Turkish-British Chamber of Commerce is organized by EEL Events based in the United Kingdom. Turkish British Magazine is one of the media sponsors of the event. The projections, opportunities and risks in the energy industry in Turkey will be addressed at the forum. Local and international investors and project developers and implementers will approach the Turkish energy industry from all aspects. The last market researches reveal that the energy system in Turkey needs to be restructured urgently with new energy resources. Emine Acar, Senior Project Manager at EEL Events underlines the renewable energy potential of Turkey. “Turkey already generates wind energy of over 7 GW and solar energy of 5.5 GW. Most of the said power plants began to operate in the last five years. Despite exhibiting a rapid increase, wind and solar energy generated corresponds to a small amount, considering Turkey’s total installed power of 80 GW.

24

The government plans to raise the rate of renewable energy resources. This is a chance for the energy investments. Turkey wants to reduce the price that it pays for electricity generation, since half of the country’s energy is obtained from import gas and coal. This figure is crucial for Turkish economy which grows annually by 5-6%. That’s why I believe that governmental incentives will continue and even rise,” says Acar. Turkey: Land Of Opportunities Acar highlights the niche areas in energy industry which still require investment. “Surface of the lakes in the country can still be used for solar power plants. Besides, solar power plants can be built on the lands which are not used for agriculture or do not contain forests, as well. Off-shore potential of the wind farms can still be put into use. Therefore there are great opportunities, considering such economic conditions and the renewable potential of the country. Another advantage of investing in Turkey is that know-how and educated labor force in the country are ready for designing and operating the solar and wind power plants,” adds she.

Turkey is the leader in tourism again! Report of ETC revealed that it became an attractive tourist destination once more. It was stated in the report that striking tourism transformation of Turkey continued in 2018 as well. Besides, it was reported that the country was at the top in terms of international tourist movements in Europe again. According to the recent data, despite the unsteady economic growth in the last months, growth of travel in the continent was stable in 2018. In the report, 32 of 33 destinations hosted more tourists than last year. The single country with downward trend was the United Kingdom.

It is seen that the tourism market in Turkey began to strengthen in 2017 following a dramatic fall in 2016 due to several events, and started to rise rapidly in 2018 season. Turkey hosts a substantial amount of tourists from not only Europe, but also the Far East.

August 2018 data shows that annual arrivals to Turkey increased by 22.9% compared to August 2017 whereas this figure slowed down only on November with a fall of 0.6 points. Thus, the average annual arrivals was calculated as 22.3%. In line with such data, it was interpreted in the report as follows: “It shows that tourism of Turkey continues to improve and still draws interest of the travellers even at low season.” Besides, “Among the accommodation data set, the hotels in Turkey offer the cheap27

China declared 2018 as “Turkey Tourism Year”. Turkey used this opportunity and number of Chinese tourists who visited Turkey increased by 67.1% compared to the previous year. In the report, it was stated: “Similar to many nonEuropean markets, the number of Indian visitors in Turkey went up by 74.4%. Turkey targets especially the Indian wedding tourism market.” Indian tourists generally prefer İstanbul, Cappadocia and Antalya. Eastern Anatolia Region engages their attention as well. On the other hand, limited number of Indians visit Blacksea Region.

Tour operators such as TUI Group and Thomas Cook focused on Turkey in the last years after the beginning of the increase in customer demand. The tour operators highlight the marked cheapness of Turkey both for consumers and businesses compared to the West Mediterranean countries. They say that the growth in 2018 may depend on devaluated Turkish lira, cheaper accommodation and the perception of improved safety in the country. Nick Wrightman, General Manager of The Discerning Collection which specialized in Turkey said: “Turkey started to get better in 2017, but 2018 was absolutely a much better year. I noticed that families returned to Turkey and this is a wonderful sign for the country. You know that the visit of families indicate safety of the destination…” In ETC report, continuance of Turkey’s growth in European tourism market in 2019 was envisaged. It was mentioned that particularly, the significant rise in arrivals of Russian tourists balanced the slow recovery in important source markets such as Germany and the United Kingdom. Although the countries like Spain and Portugal turned the instability in Turkey into an advantage, the current trend reverse. International tourism growth of Spain and Portugal regressed to 0.7% and 0.2%, respectively. These figures contain the first 11 months of the year. Turkey is followed by Serbia (14.7%), Malta (14.5%), Montenegro (14%) and Latvia (10.1%) with respect to the highest growth performance. According to ETC report, it may be difficult for more developed destinations such as the United Kingdom to maintain their higher growth rates compared to the developing countries. Furthermore, it is specified in the report that the developing tourism industry of Iceland went down to 5.5% in 2018.

these aesthetic procedures. In particular, the patients from the Middle East and Europe increasingly prefer this successful country in any aesthetic operations, for rhinoplasty procedures. Competence of the plastic surgeons in Turkey in numerous aesthetic branches such as breast augmentation, rhinoplasty and gynecomastia (enlarged breasts in men) appeals to the people in foreign countries, so aesthetic tourism becomes popular day by day. Many tourists from western and eastern countries prefer having operation especially in Turkey.

Allocate some time to beautification on holiday! In addition to hair transplantation and rhinoplasty, breast augmentation, breast reduction, liposuction, abdominal lift, arm and leg lift operations are performed in summer. Protecting the operation region from sunlight is enough for summer aesthetic procedures. Finally, the patient can enjoy summer with shaped body. In case of rhinoplasty and face lift operations, patients need to be more careful, because sunlight may contact these regions directly and protection from sun may not be possible. However, these patients can return to their daily lives in a short time. Most of the non-operative facial rejuvenation procedures do not pose risk in summer. AWT (Acoustic Wave Therapy) and no-needle mesotherapy used to remove wrinkles are only a few of them. Aesthetic clinics in Turkey offer countless alternatives such as breast augmentation, breast reduction, liposuction and abdominal lift for being beautiful without disrupting holiday. In particular, dental aesthetics such as Hollywood smile design are the leading operations which can be performed in summer on holiday. 34

Commercial Relations Between Turkey and the U.K In the framework of his visit to Turkey, the Secretary of State for International Trade Liam Fox came together with the businessworld, in an event called “The Future of Turkish & British Commercial Relations”.

T

he event was held by TOBB (Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey), and one of the main discussions of the event was the post Brexit financial affairs of the two countries. Secretary of Commerce Ruhsar Pekcan, TOBB President Rifat Hisarciklioglu and the Secretary of State for International Trade Liam Fox all gave speeches during the event. Fox stated that the commercial relationships between the two countries are deep rooted and go way back, and that Turkey has become one of the most important commercial partners of Britain in recent years. Underlining Mustafa Kemal Ataturk’s words about how accountability is an important aspect of a tradesman, Fox said “Trust is the most important cornerstone of commerce”. Each country is in the opposite corners of Europe, and a healthy commercial relationship between the two countries is now even more important as the U.K is leaving the EU, says Fox.

“We are leaving the EU. We were one of the most important allies of Turkey in EU and now we are going to be one of the most important allies of Turkey in the world.” said Fox, adding that by leaving the EU, the U.K will also be leaving the EU’s Custom Union and now the UK is in search of a new commerce system. A system with Turkey as an important partner. “Brexit is not a threat but an opportunity for our relationship with Turkey” Fox emphasized that the %44 of the UK’s trade volume is with the EU, and that they don’t want to harm this relationship. It is important for the U.K to leave the EU with a sensible agreement. During this process, Turkey is an important country for commerce, and that “Brexit is not a threat but an opportunity for our commercial relationships with Turkey” stated Fox. The partnership of the two countries made great contributions to the global commerce and regional safety and “the foundation of our relationship will never change, we will always stand against protective trade policies” stated Fox. (AA)

Turkey was a stable partner during the mid 20th century, when “west” was financially and politically unstable, and the UK will do her best to grow this partnership even stronger now, according to Fox. “When I say that the economic ties between the two counties is important, I really mean it, I am just not trying to be polite. This relationship is really important for Europe and for the rest of the world” stated Fox. Turkey is a very important partner of both NATO and the G20 according to Fox. He also reminded that the UK was the first to call when the 2016 Turkish coup d’etat attempt took place. The U.K wants to better its work capacity with Turkish companies and they are giving incentives for British companies to invest in Turkey, according to Fox. 41

According to İlgüner, Turkish brands, especially

banking, telecommunications and food retailers, should continue their efforts and try to do business using international currencies. This way they will be less affected by exchange rates and protect their brand value. İlgüner emphasized the importance of not giving up on becoming a world brand, and that companies should continue the efforts. The extra efforts shown by these companies is crucial for both the company and their country.

“Goodness Foods” is Now a Turkish Group Brand “You Are What You Eat”, the company slogan of Aytac Foods Ltd, who are continuing to grow in natural organic food market. Aytac Foods Ltd. recently strengthened its place within organic food market’s giants, with the acquisition of Goodness Foods, a 36 years old British company. Aytac Foods Ltd. took a big step that will increase its market share in the food industry. With their “You Are What You Eat” slogan, Aytac Foods Ltd. is planning to grow even more in natural organic food market, and with that vision they have incorporated 36 years old British organic food brand Goodness Foods. Consumers throughout the world are getting more and more conscious about their food. Seeing the need in the market, Aytac Foods founded their organic food unit two years ago and started to work on the matter. With the acquisition of Goodness Foods, they are now in a league of giants. After their London center, Aytac Foods is now growing even more in Britain, especially in Mid and North England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland with their Manchester center. They have also incorporated many important “halal food” brands into their company, an industry for which the demand is growing day by day. Goodness Foods was founded by a church, and operated in England for 36 years. It was privatized 2 years ago and acquired by an investment partnership of Spanish and Dutch firms. Due to financial hardship, the firm experienced a crisis and had to stop its operations. Aytac Food Ltd bought the name rights and some of the products of the company, and grew even larger in Britain. 2000 Organic Products From All Over The World Aytac Foods’ Chairman of the board Recep Ercan pointed out the growing importance of a 46

healthy diet, and stated the inevitable acquisition of Goodness Foods by Aytac Foods. Aytac Foods’ “Organic” unit consists organic food coming from all around the world, particularly from Turkey, and according to Ercan, with the acquisition of Goodness Foods, Aytac Foods will hold a better place in the industry. Right now, Aytac Foods offers 2000 different organic food options for its customers. Your Mind and Soul is Sustained and Shaped by What You Eat With their 20 years of service, Aytac Foods is not in it for only commercial concerns according to Ercan. “We started our journey with the motto “You Are What You Eat”. Your mind and soul is sustained and shaped by what you eat. In today’s ever changing world, we realized how important natural organic food is for human life. We started our work with natural organic foods because we wanted to raise awareness and make a contribution by serving to society. Your perspective on life changes greatly, in accordance with what you consume everyday. Eating organic has a direct effect on living healthy. Some products don’t show immediate effects on people even though they are bad, so people buy things that are bad for them without realizing it. In a world where genetics of people and food is manipulated, we couldn’t leave natural food industry to its fate. We had to take action.” stated Ercan. “Within the bounds of our possibilities, we have started our organic food journey in Europe. Our first order of business is to find

natural organic food sources from all around the world, particularly from Turkey, bring them here and present them to our customers as affordable as possible. And while doing so, our aim is to inform people and the food industry about the importance of a healthy diet, hopefully making a contribution to the community.” said Ercan. Not Everything You Eat is Nutrition Aytac Foods is firing on all cylinders when it comes to making their product available to the customers. Their center in Leyton is still making Cash & Carry “direct sales” to the customer. Especially after May, there will be B2B internet sales and online shopping services available on ‘ goodnessfoods.co.uk ‘ and B2C sales on ‘ goodnessdirect.co.uk ‘ Reconstruction of Aytac Foods will be completed this year, and Manchester branch will increase their natural organic food availability, just like London branch. “2019 will be our “ Eat Organic” year, with Aytac Food making a place for themselves in

events and social media promotions. Slogans like ” Not everything you eat is nutrition” or “Don’t buy food without knowing the ingredients” and “Eat healthy and organic even though it makes you feel hungry all the time.” will be used on our promotions to reach our community.” stated Ercan. Goodness Foods are continuing their operations in a 1000 meter square big Aytac Foods depot in London. It is open 6 days a week and is making cash & carry sales to all customers.

A Piece of Advice for Small Brands During Times of Crisis

BĂźlent Fidan

BrandMap Editor in Chief Brand Specialist bulent.fidan@brandmap.com.tr

Times of crisis can become the times of rejuvenation, course correction and development for companies who think ahead. You probably know this already. But you probably also know that even though people know, they still panic and drown when times of crisis arrive.

C

ompanies with the right business plans and smart strategies know how risks turn into crisis in times of crisis. They at least know which risks were left unseen and the how the crisis resulted from that risks.

Risk management, brand identity and course correction, product innovation, development in human resources, betterment of working conditions, reanalyzing customer needs, creating new financial sources, correct judgement of domestic and foreign markets, finding sustainable projects and implementing new and better ways of management to corporate culture are all really important and all actually serve one purpose. You can see times of crisis as times when people lose their jobs, companies downsize or go under or shrinking markets, but you can also see it as an opportunity for companies to ride the wave and come out with even stronger foundations. So, What Can Be Done? Instead of keeping busy with day to day dealings of an organization all together, a member of the board can temporarily hand over his day to day responsibilities to his peers and start a 50

crisis assessment and post-crisis readiness team. Same principle applies to small and medium organizations as well. The goal of this newly built team would be analyzing the possible risks, completing missing work and finding out innovative solutions. It is really hard for the company’s board to deal with day to day, all the while trying to figure a way out of a crisis. Having an independent team that is only concerned with the betterment of brand and company, should be seen as an investment towards the future of the company. This correction and enhancement team should act as an independent research team inside the company and analyze the entire company, so that the data can be used for future projects. This team should be made of people who think outside the box in order to be successful. What they are actually doing is a wide scale conference call inside the organization. If they can get help from a brand or a management consultant and from a researcher, the results will be healthier and will be reached faster. All this correction and enhancement studies will yield a lot of documents. These documents should be compared to the current state of crisis, which will lead to a period of analysis. Prospective projections of problems due to crisis, solutions, good opportunities and chances should be made and should be compared using SWOT, PEST and other means of comparison, which might lead to a way out of the crisis. Production and development with design oriented thought and a transition to experimental branding could be one of the best implementations this team can make. It opens up a way for workers to share their innovative thoughts by making the entire organization join in with their ideas. As a result, if brands and organizations can make the most of a crisis, they can get out of it with minimal losses, even stronger and it would make a healthier post-crisis management possible.

What can I sell on Amazon?

Do my products sell on Amazon? Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA) refers to all process of products which have been sold from Amazon’s warehouses by Amazon staff. Amazon FBA is a huge job opportunity when managed properly by choosing right products. The starting point for selling with Amazon FBA, which is a huge business opportunity when managed properly by choosing the right products, is to find the right product. If you’re shopping from Amazon, as a buyer, you’ll pay attention to: products price, photos, product reviews and delivery time. As well as your Amazon experience as a buyer, you should also start looking at products from the perspective of the seller. When you calculate your costs on Amazon FBA sales model, you will be able to understand what I really mean “right product” What is the Cost of Amazon FBA Sales?

Y

ou will remember if you read my article in the first issue.I shared some basic information about starting e-commerce business in the UK.In this issue, I will share some information about selling on Amazon which has been frequently asked to me. After moving to the UK in 2017,a year later I started to sell on Ebay. To start selling on Amazon especially with FBA model,I was supposed to be more equipped. After a long reading, learning and chatting with experienced Amazon sellers, I started to sell on Amazon FBA in 2019. Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA) refers to all process of products which have been sold from Amazon’s warehouses by Amazon staff. A model which you can sell without the hassle of sending goods to customers without a warehouse.

Advertising expenses to sell the product should also be calculated as a cost item. Murat Buyurgan 52

https://www.muratbuyurgan.com/

When you open a seller account on Amazon, you pay £ 30 including VAT each month. Amazon charges a commission on each product you sell (referral fee). Although it varies by product category, you may consider this rate as 15%. After you send the products to the Amazon store, you pay a storage fee which will be invoiced at certain times because the products are located in the Amazon store. This fee is calculated daily. You will pay a separate fee for the sold product to be prepared and shipped to the customer (fulfilment). When you want to sell the product from your own warehouse or home, your cost and time will probably be much higher. Small packages called “Small Parcel” only cost £ 2.90 via Royal Mail. Amazon will charge you almost the same fee for the preparation, shipping and return of the product for you. What can I sell in Amazon? If you don’t have a product of your own, you can make a selection by looking at the analysis of products sold on Amazon to decide which product to sell. The fees to be paid for storage and fulfilment are proportional to the volume and weight of the product. For this reason,

TurkishBritish

you should consider the shipping and storage costs of the product.Your costs will not be limited to Amazon’s expenses. You will also have costs to purchase, import and ship the product to Amazon’s warehouse. For a product with a retail price of £ 15-20, these costs will be close to product costs. Therefore, I recommend that you do not ignore the volume and weight of the product. When choosing a product to sell, you should check the level of competition on Amazon and how much profit it will yield to you after calculating costs. Advertising expenses to sell the product should also be calculated as a cost item. After analyzing all of these costs as well as the sales volume of the product you intend to sell on Amazon, you can decide which product to sell. Does this product sell on Amazon? This is the most frequently asked question by my customers I give consultancy service about being Amazon seller for those whom manufacture in Turkey or supply goods. If you are a manufacturer or have determined where to supply the product you are going to sell, you should make your analysis according to these products. If you start selling with the products you see profitable and push the risky products into the background, your chances of success and profitability will increase. Before you start selling, if you correctly determine the average sales quantity of the products you will import to the UK, you can minimize the costs mentioned above.

How do I analyze products sold on Amazon? You can find and buy paid technical tools on the internet where you can see the sales quantity of the products sold in Amazon and analyze the fees you will pay to Amazon. Or you can get help from an experienced consultant. Using Amazondasatarmi.com, you can get sales analysis. Where can I find products to sell on Amazon? There are basically two answers to this question. You can obtain them from a supplier in the UK or import the products from another country. Both methods have their advantages and disadvantages. If you are able to do business with a manufacturer or supplier in Turkey whom you can trust and pay for products by instalments, your work gets much easier. That’s how I work. I sell the products that I have bought from several suppliers in Amazon. As it is not possible to work with each supplier that I met, I bring them together who want to sell in the UK and Turkish suppliers who want their products to be sold on Amazon. You can also buy the products from China, suppliers from Alibaba. You can import and sell your products from China to the UK after processes such as finding products in Alibaba, contacting manufacturers, finding samples and negotiating. You can follow my Amazon FBA sales experience at Amazondasatarmi.com and Amazondanasil.com, if you have any questions, please let me know.

UK E-Commerce Market Sector Reports Home Textiles - Cat & Dog Food sectors The London Bridge Project (LBP) published monthly E-Commerce Sector Reports of the UK, announcing the details of the “Home Textile” and “Cat and Dog Food” markets this month.

London Bridge Project (LBP) is a consultancy company that provides services in the areas of Sales Consultancy ”,“ Sales Operation ”and” E-commerce Management” in order to provide the fastest and most effective access to the UK market for companies, especially Turkish companies. The LBP also regularly publishes detailed reports on different sectors each month. London Bridge Project is preparing these reports by analyzing the products and services correctly; identifies the market opportunity, identifies potential customers and aims to start the sales process as quickly as possible.

The UK is leading role in the e-commerce market! “Home Textile ”and“ Cat and Dog Food ”market details announced by London Bridge Project (LBP) also included details of the ecommerce market. According to the report; ecommerce is the fastest growing retail market in Europe. Approximately 30% of the European e-commerce market is realized by the United Kingdom. With a market size of about 177 billion euros, the UK has a volume of about twice that of Germany and France. It is predicted that growth will continue with the new investments of Amazon and EBay, the 54

approach of local players to the customers with local solutions and the development of new transportation methods.

Amazon grows the market Amazon has the biggest share with 16% of the UK e-commerce market. Amazon is followed by Tesco with 9% and eBay with 8%. On the other hand, chains of markets such as Asda and Sainsbury’s are taking different initiatives to bring consumers’ daily market needs into e-commerce. With Click & Collect, Asda and Tesco purchase online from the internet, deliver ready-made packages in the parking lot, or deliver purchases over a certain amount to the user at a time interval chosen by the user. These markets also guarantee freshness in products such as fruit and vegetables. Amazon bought WholeFoods and entered the field. With PrimeNow service Grocery category (Daily Needs) 2-hour delivery is guaranteed. It is deepening in the field with Amazon Flex service where individual couriers and distribution are made. Amazon continues to invest in the market with ambitious solutions in order to keep its leadership in the number of visitors and turnover. This enables the market to grow further.

TurkishBritish Home textile e-commerce market

Cat-dog food e-commerce market

In the UK market, it is observed that the market for home textile products has developed rapidly and competition has increased recently. The high purchasing power increases the demand along with the insufficient supply of domestic production. Home textile products address the lower and middle income group in the e-commerce segment. In other words, consumers take a pricesensitive approach. In addition, the mid-upper segment, which prefers high-quality and personalized products, can prefer higher-priced products.

The report announced also includes market research on cat and dog food sales through amazon.co.uk. Wet and dry varieties of both cat and dog food were analyzed separately.

Dry dog food Generally, dry dog food in packages of 10 to 20 Kg beef, chicken, duck, lamb meat, salmon and dietary varieties are available on amazon. co.uk. Amazon applies charges from 15-20% to 22% as Platform Usage Fee ( referral fee )for these products and charges FBA (Rack and Shipping) between £ 2.5 and £ 8, depending on the weight and size of the product.

In terms of design, products with simple design and trendy colors are generally preferred. At this point, new and trendy designs should be the area where competition is least felt and new sellers can enter easily. In terms of technical textiles, the main determinants of demand are nonstaining, easy ironing, thermal and waterproof ones… The highest turnover in the market dominated by Amazon comes from the sales of bed sheets, quilts, bed linen, pillows, curtains and blankets. At the same time, such as bedding sets, quilts, products are seen as high profitability per unit of sales. When this situation leads to high competition in product sales, it is recommended for new players to enter the market with other sub-categories in this sales category. The competition is relatively low in bathrobes, oven gloves, towels, cloth napkins, table cloths, kitchen aprons and pique sets. When brand preference is in the background, product features and price advantage are the main factors in purchasing preferences. As a result, the fact that the seller has not entered the market at the rate that will bring the market to saturation is an advantageous situation for the new entrants. The low cost of cargo and shelving due to the packaging dimensions of the products in general can also be considered as a positive case. This situation is also considerably important in terms of shipping costs.

After the Amazon deductions have been removed from the products, the average fees per kilogram vary depending on the product type. The smallest and largest price applied to these products per kg and their share as number of sales from dry dog food market are given in the table below: Product Type

* Due to the high demand, it is possible to realize sales at the first entry to the market close to the average sales figures stated in the table above, at the end of one year, it is estimated that a sales figure of 500-1500 units per month can be reached for each product group. We will work on Amazon platform for catdog food sales according to the services you request: • After the detailed analysis process, the necessary steps for the products to be sold in the market with appropriate competitive conditions will be determined in detail. • The necessary photo shoots of the products will be taken according to Amazon standards and processed by us, graphic designs will be made. EDUCATION

Make your dream of studying in the UK come true! British education system which based on the culture for thousand of years offers hundreds of educational alternatives to children in almost all age groups, young and adults. We start to explain these alternatives to you in this issue. As of this issue,we start to tell you these alternatives. Our first subject; language schools and university preparation in the UK ...In the next issues of the magazine, we will continue to explain education in the UK with new titles.

E

very year, thousands of international students come to study in the UK for different purposes and reasons. With excellent learning system, world’s top schools and hundreds of universities, the UK comes first as mostly preffered by students to study. Students who want to go on their education in the UK prefer UK for joining both foreign language education and short-term courses. Worldwide recognized and respected diplomas and certificates, granting university students the opportunity to work part-time (max 20 hrs) per week, internship opportunities to strengthen CV, professional teaching styles and student services, a vibrant and creative environment to enhance the potential of students make UK attractive for education. However, you need to make right choices for this education to be useful. Getting to know the schools, courses, having detailed information about their education and knowing your needs on the way to your goal make it easy for you to make the right choice. Let me introduce the British education system with language schools ... English Language Schools (16 and over) If you wish to be admitted to a UK undergraduate or postgraduate course, English courses in English language schools will be the perfe-

62

ct way to do this. Language schools offer students a wide range of options, from intensive short-term courses to year-round programs and IELTS (English proficiency exam required for university application) courses. Academic Summer Camps (13-18 years) and Family Programs (8-17 years) Families who plan to pursue their children’s higher education in the UK, as well as General English camps; they can also send students to specific programs (such as economics, history, law, politics, entrepreneurship), which last for 2-4 weeks, that prepare the student according to the department they wish to study at the university. Presentations, debates ,responsibility in sports, arts and social activities improve life skills such as communication, self-confidence, and teamwork. City tours on weekends provide an opportunity to get to know British history and culture. Within the scope of the Family Program, parents can come with their children at any time during the year and participate in language programs at the same school. They both develop their language and get a good experience by exploring the city in their spare time and participating in workshops according to their interests, which gives a perspective on education and life in England in the following period.

University & Foundation in the UK ( University Preparatory Year) British universities include a 3-year training for students who have completed secondary education in the UK. In Turkey, university education is four years. UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) system can be applied to students who meet the necessary requirements and will start directly from the 1st year and maximum 5 applications can be made. The equivalence of the Council of Higher Education must be checked before applying. British universities often ask Turkish students to study the Foundation year to begin their undergraduate studies. However, students who have high school education is part of an international program in Turkey, for example; IB ( International Baccalaureata)program or Baccalaureata apply directly for the first year, while other students apply to the university for a foundation (1 year) + 3 years education. The Foundation year can be turned into many advantages. The application of a student below the grade point average required for the desired department of the undergraduate program can be evaluated more flexibly considering that the foundation will make progress. We can think of this stage as an interim period in which students will adapt to school, environ-

ment, culture and system before entering a foreign education system. Students can take the Foundation, which enables them to take English, academic skills and field knowledge courses related to the department (finance, engineering, media, law, design) that they want to study, as well as at the college, and they move on to the first year of the university if they complete the required GPA ( Grade Point Average) Turkish students who want to study with scholarships in the UK should also search for universities and local and national scholarships. Application Requirements for Foundation Program: • Min 4.5 IELTS (Depending on the university and department applied) or equivalent • High School Diploma and transcript • A letter describing academic & career goals, achievements, desire to study in the UK and why s/he aims to study that department at the university

Sevgi Kaya Kayauk Limited / Overseas Education Consultant After graduating from University of Economics in İzmir,Sevgi Kaya completed his master’s degree at the University of Westminster and founded Kayauk Limited, an international education consultancy firm. Kaya offers all the services that students need for school applications, registration, accommodation, visa application, airport pick-up, 24/7 support and life coaching throughout education.

HEALTH

Ertan Erel, a Turkish doctor in the UK National Health Service Health is probably one of the areas that the Turkish society living in the UK complains the most about. We asked this issue to someone who knows about the UK National Health Service, NHS, which functions quite slowly compared to Turkey and has been subject to heavy criticism due to budget cuts especially in the recent years. We have asked Plastic Surgeon Dr. Ertal Erel, who has been working in the UK for nearly 30 years, about many different areas and subjects of interest from the service quality and speed of NHS to private health insurances and from Turkey based health tourism to medical education in the UK. Could you tell us about yourself? My name is Ertan Erel. I am currently working as a plastic surgery specialist in the UK. I graduated from Ege University Faculty of Medicine in in 1987. After completing my compulsory service, I came to the UK in 1989 and have been here ever since. After my medical education in Turkey, I had to take the additional exam named PLAB (The Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board) to get my equivalence certificate and I passed the exam. Then I continued my education in the UK. After working as an assistant for a while, I became a general surgeon in 2000. Following this, I completed my master’s degree at the University College London in 2002 and I completed my specialisation in Plastic Surgery in 2010. I have been a full-time plastic surgeon at the NHS (National Health Service) for 9 years. I have super specialisation certificate in breast reconstruction and I am a micro surgeon. I also perform non-surgical procedures such as rhinoplasty, chest-abdominal surgery and botox-filling. How would you comment on the criticisms on quality and speed of service in the NHS?

Reportage: M. Yusuf Çoban 64

NHS has been offering free health care to the patients since 1947. About 60 million people live in this country. A very nice program has been created to solve the health problems of the public. In this system, 80% of cases are solved by GPs (General Practitioners). Namely, the main responsibility belongs to your GP. It sometimes take a few days or longer, depending on your region, to get an appointment from the GP. However, emergency

services or NHS centers can also be used to benefit from the GP. The remaining 20% of patients are sent to hospitals. These are divided into groups. If a cancer diagnosis is considered, the hospital has to arrange an appointment within 14 days and complete the treatment within 62 days. This is called the ‘fast-track system’. However, if there is not a life-threatening situation, the relevant specialist doctors in NHS hospitals examine you within 18 weeks. Of course, these 18 weeks can be too long for us, Turks. Treatment after examination and diagnosis (surgery, etc.) must also be completed in a year. In order to ease this system, which is very crowded, the patients are filtered in this way. Of course, the system is not like this in Turkey. Therefore, Turkish patients here may feel congested and their problems are not solved immediately. In this case, they can get help from the private sector. Another issue is the private health insurance. It is a common practice here. Usually the employers offer private health insurance. For example, the employees of large corporations like banks and official institutions take out health insurance in order to benefit from tax exemption. These also have certain categories. For example, the aesthetic operations are often outside the scope of these insurances. However, treatments like orthopedics are met after any kind of accident. Again, a letter must be received from the GP for this. So do you think that the alternative of NHS should be the private health insurances or treatment options in Turkey? Some of our patients prefer Turkey to solve their health problems. Both treatment and surgery costs are often cheaper in Turkey. This is due to lower hospital expenses there and the government’s support for health tourism. Therefore, the patients can have their treatments in Turkey if they have the opportunities. If you ask me, I recommend that the patients solve their health problems in place of residence. But if they have difficulty in terms of finance, they can be treated in Turkey. However, they should also consider that flying for four hours may cause formation of clot in the leg. We make our patients walk the very next day after the surgery. We apply injections to thin their blood. Therefore, if our patients are to be operated in Turkey, I would recommend staying there for several weeks more to spend their convalescence term.

Can you inform the people who want to pursue a career in medicine, especially about the medical education and the process of becoming a doctor in the UK? There are two ways for this. One is to pass the PLAB test. Passing this test means registering your title of doctor. There is also an English section of the exam, but it is now even easier. You obtaine your proficiency in English language with the IELTS exam which can also be taken in Turkey. Then the medical part of the exam is taken here. If you pass it, you can start working as a doctor here. If you are specialist in an area such as anesthesia, orthopedics, gynecology etc., and you want to work in the UK, you will either take the PLAB test or apply to the relevant college of your specialisation (for example Royal College of Surgeons) to obtain an equivalence certificate. You can also take the surgery/branch exams of these colleges. You also need to pass the English exam. If you pass that exam, you will be exempt from the PLAB test this time. You can learn more details from General Medical Council (GMC). Finally, in which areas does Dr. Erel offer health services in the UK? I assist our patients in a wide range including surgery, nose surgery, breast reduction enlargement/lifting surgery, abdominal surgery, liposuction and removal of skin lesions. In addition, I offer free medical advice for 15 minutes and I can make the necessary referrals. I would be happy to help them as much as I can. 65

CIVIL SOCIETY

CITY AND LIFE

The community of optimists, Turkey Mosaic Foundation, supports goodness...

Turkey Mosaic Foundation based in London, which priotises subjects such as children, women, education, health and the environment, has been helping the NGOs in Turkey since 2017. The aim is to make difference for someone in life...

T

urkey Mosaic Foundation has been founded within the scope of the UK laws at the end of 2017 by a small group of people who have been living in London for a long time and who want to support the civil society in their native land. The purpose of its establishment is to create sources for the civil society organisations which make a difference in Turkey, but are in need of financial assistance, have difficulty in access to the financial resources and work with the people in need directly at the base level. The founders of Turkey Mosaic Foundation summarise their reasons of creating such a platform as “We think that we can contribute significantly to the development of civil society in Turkey if we support the innovative solutions of different NGOs. Because an active civil society continues to be one of the main stakeholders of a democratic society. We hope that the foundation is located abroad will have significant role in increasing the supports given to the civil society in Turkey by establishing collaboration with similar institutions.” The founders state that “Initially, we defined ourselves as a group of ‘optimists’. As we have obtained more support than we imagined at the end of our first year, we feel more optimistic at the moment because we have already supported many projects and institutions in Turkey.”

66

Turkey Mozaic Foundation makes a difference in life with its projects Turkey Mosaic Foundation helped 19 NGOs in the year 2018. As their founding, their topics of priority are children, women, education, health and environment... All NGOs which have been supported work on these topics. Some NGOs are supported for institutional capacity building. For example like a new employee’s annual salary. Some NGOs are supported for a designated project. For example, preparation of materials for a specific training program and conducting training. Some of the projects that Turkey Mozaic makes a difference in are provising computer training to young women, educating both parents and children against child abuse, ringing and scientifically researching the birds, educating the teachers to create change in village schools or adaptation of village children with each other through sports and games. The founders say “the supported NGOs work in every corner of Turkey and it is very important for us to be able to measure the difference we make and then to describe it in details to our supporters.” Turkey Mozaik Foundation raises funds both from individual donors and from institutional donors who comply with ethical values. Generally, the founders summarize the areas that they raise funds as follows: “The activities organized by our supporters who are inspired by our work from time to time for the benefit of Turkey Mozaik Foundation also contribute to us. Our fundraising methods include a wide spectrum of activities ranging from online donations to donations created as result of various cultural and artistic activities. However, we have focused primarily on mobilizing people interested in such issues around donors on this journey. In the first year of our founding, we summarized our fund-raising history and

TurkishBritish all supported institutions in our 2018 Annual Report. Briefly, we have collected donations of more than 126 thousand Pounds and we have distributed these funds to the institutions in Turkey after a very sensitive and detailed analysis and study period by selecting the institutions and projects that are within our areas of interest and meet our criteria. We have worked with partners in Turkey and one of them is the Support Foundation for Civil Society. We work with them at every step of the application and selection process.”

Turkey’s voice will be heard more in the global economy. The most important impact of Turkey Mosaic Foundation, which offers support to the civil society organizations in Turkey from the UK, is that it is a channel that supports the donors who live abroad, who have social issues about Turkey in their agenda and want to make impact on these.

The team continues to explain its works: “We, as the founding team, work voluntarily and for Turkey Mosaic Foundation by taking time from our works and families. Our belief in walking on the right way is strengthened and it makes us look at the future with more hope and excitement every moment when we have a new supporter, the supported institutions write us appreciation message and we follow our positive impacts on the social media.” The founding team have a final message: “If you are living in the UK and want to support children, women, education, health and environment issues in Turkey, we invite you to get to know Turkey Mosaic Foundation better. You can follow us on Instagram and Facebook, subscribe to our e-mails, participate in the events we organize and of course support us at www.turkeymozaik.org.uk.”

By Turkey Mozaik Foundation supported NGOs

“As we are an association registered in the UK, there are of course some tax advantages of donating in the UK. This model itself can be reproduced in other countries too. The important thing is that the motivated people who want to come together and adapt these and similar models to the works they want to do.” said the founding members and continued to mention that “Turkey Mosaic Foundation will both actively raise more funds for improvement of the civil society in our country and make the civil society initiatives to raise their voices globally by working together with similar institutions and maybe persons abroad”. The founding team which draws attention to the fact that it is going to be a process which motivates the donors in Turkey says the following for the works carried out between the two countries: “Thus, it can be ensured that the mutual works are supported by mutual decisions. It can be a different motivation that the donors in Turkey can be replicated with support of other donor institutions. As Turkey Mosaic Foundation, we know that some of our supported institutions and projects find it very difficult to reach to financial supports in Turkey and we find even more happiness as we can make contributions to particularly these institutions and projects.” 67

Modern Mediterranean Beso London

Beso, which Interprets the traditional Italian and Spanish cuisine with modern touches, offers special tastes that will leave a mark on the minds and palates. Ebru Atlan TecirlioÄ&#x;lu / @ebruatlan, Photos: Ferhat Elik

Beso, located in Covent Garden in the heart of London among the theaters and many popular attractions of the city, is a modern and Mediterranean city restaurant that masterfully blends Italian and Spanish cuisine with a selection of flavors. The minimal menu, which mainly includes Italian cuisine and does not tire the reviewer, also includes special tastes from Spanish cuisine. One of the main secrets of flavors that leave a mark on the palate and in the mind is, of course, the use of good materials. The founders of the place and the kitchen team focused on preparing dishes that guarantee the the

flavor and the taste of the Mediterranean cuisine which, with the selection of materials, has been one of the most important issues they have meticulously addressed. They care about the very good quality of the ingredients used in cooking. Their basic principle is to prepare simple and delicious plates by using the highest quality materials produced by sustainable methods mostly in the organic farms. The Italian and Spanish olives, cheeses and delicatessen products on the menu come from the best producers in Italy and Spain. One of the most attractive options among the starters, burrata cheese, comes from its native land, Naples, from an organic farm and the tomatoes come from the best producers of Amalfi. Most of the vegetables are taken from the local organic producers in the UK. The fish, most of the seafood and meat products are also obtained freshly from the UK’s secure producers. We think that this attention paid for preparation of the food has been noticed by those who are always in search of good food because Beso has been selected as the best restaurant in London among 20 thousand restaurants at 2019 British Restaurant Awards, although it has only been open for a year. Beso has a refined menu that changes seasonally by taking the customer feedbacks into consideration. The organic burrata cheese presented with colorful tomatoes and extruded balsamic sauce, mixed bruschetta plate, goat cheese salad with caramelized onions and forest berry sauce are good choices among the appetizers. As the signature flavors of the place, there are exquisite options among their hand-made

2019 British Restaurant Awards Londra’nın en iyi restoranı ödülü fresh pastas. You should try the panzerotti with porcini mushroom flavored with truffle sauce and rosemary oil among the pastas which have vegan and gluten-free options too. Galician octopus among the main dishes is also one of the favorite dishes of the place. Miso marinated black cod fish and braised lamb ribs are among the main choices which attracts wonder. Sometimes, the classical tastes can gain a whole new dimension with the creative touches of the master chefs. Our suggestion to make the sweet final of the pleasant experience at Beso is the delicious Affogato. Do not leave the place without trying Affogato which is presented in shape of a Muffin by skillfully combining hazelnut ice cream, chocolate ice cream and chocolate sauce and espresso on the top. The noon service of the place starts at 12 pm and lasts until 3 pm. Between 5-7 pm, a special pre-theater menu is offered to the theater lovers. The menu consists of delicious options for those who will go to London’s famous musicals and theater plays and to stop by before the theater. Evening service starts at 7 pm and continues until late hours.

One of Beso’s most striking features is the fact that it has a private room which was used by the members of The Beatles in the 1960s for dining by coming from their studio that is very close to the place. This room, called The Beatles Private Dining Room, can be rented for special events and meetings. he Royal Ascot is held every year in summer season as one of the highlights of British social and sporting life. These five excellent days in which world-class horse races, fashion parades and the best food combines with each other turn into a feast for fashion designers. The Royal Ascot races, where women have to wear formal dresses and hats, also serve as a fashion show where guests show up with stylish outfits and interesting hats. In this traditional event, attended by the Queen Elizabeth II at Ascot Racecourse in Berkshire which lasts for five days, British fashion displays itself. The Royal Ascot horse races, which is the unmissable event of June, dates back to 1711 when it was founded by Queen Anne. Every year, Queen. Elizabeth II and the Prince of Wales and the members of the British Royal Family attend the Royal Ascot. At the start of each race day, there is a royal parade of the royal family. Ascot, which is an important event in the British social calendar, is transforming into fashion days by exceeding the scope of horse races as the attendees are on the agenda of the public and press with their clothes. Before the Royal Ascot held on 1722 June 2019 this year, the Pre As-

cot fashion event supported by AWAUK - the Azerbaijan Women’s Association in the UK - was held at the Ritz Hotel London. In the Pre Ascot Fashion Event attended by Azerbaijani designers, hatmakers and jewelers, pioneers of the Azerbaijani fashion exhibited their works. Narmeen Jewelery, Mozafarian London, Samira Ebrahimi’s “War Brides”, Velor, Lumier Plus Size, Salamakhina Azerbaijan scarves and Squirz Couture brands presented their collections to the guests of Ascot. All of these brands were presented to the attention of fashion lovers in London at the legendary facilities of Ritz. Azerbaijan, which has a great potential in terms of fashion, proudly realized the event in London Ritz Hotel right after the successful fashion event with the Azerbaijani and worldwide brands in Grand Royale Hotel at the beginning of this spring. Ulviyya Taghizade, the founder of AWAUK, said the following about these events which they organized in England to introduce Azerbaijani fashion designers; “The brands representing their countries abroad and participating in such fashion events keep local customers and buyers aware of trends away from the UK. These events are also a great way to participate, make contacts and go even further in the UK fashion industry.” 73

Ömür Yeğinsu:

AFTERNOON TE

“The Key for Opening to the World is Rooted in Education” The founder of Futureminds Educational, Ömer Yeğinsu, provides admission of the students in Turkey by the schools having reputation in the international arena in the UK with the personalized education maps that he prepares individually. Thanks to Yeğinsu’s professional mentoring, the students fairly wear armors against the failure risk in the education arena. At the end of a rigorous preparatory process, the students whose foreign language and academic knowledge levels reach international standards are transformed into self-confident world citizens with strengthened personalities. Reportage: Kevser Devecioğlu The founder of Futureminds Educational, Ömür Yeğinsu, has been living in London since 1987. Ömür Yeğinsu is a woman who has radically changed the lives of hundreds of children of different ages, to whom she has been mentoring, as if she had a magic wand in her hands. The reason why she has moved to London is that she wanted her son, Can, and her second child, Ceylan, who were born in the 80s, to open up to the world by having deep-rooted education. Yeğinsu, who advised students in Turkey and in the United Kingdom, had her first target as her children, heirs of a rich culture, to receive the right education without losing that identity, to become self-confident individuals with personalities, to determine their targets accurately and to become citizens of the world who contribute to the country and she has preferred the British education system due to all of these reasons. Ömür Yeğinsu mentors the students who live in Turkey and want to continue their education in the UK as well as the students living in the UK and want to be admitted to private schools having international reputation. She works target-oriented in university, graduate, secondary, high school, boarding school, voca74

tional English, summer school, IELTS subjects. There are many reasons why Yeğinsu preferred England, about which she said “I believe it is the cradle of education”. She says “They have transformed the education of the 1263s into a system with slight touches based on the development of today’s world. It’s not an education, it’s a system. Since our founding, we have been deeply understanding the international cultures and types of education and we are giving conscious and holistic education consultancy to people at 0-12 years, 13-18 years, 18+.” Individuals with Analytical Perspective and Understanding Cause-Effect Relationship are Raised At Futureminds Educational London, all services are tailored individually for each consulting person. Yeğinsu, who gives personal mentorship in this form, offers magical touches to the students with the “educational secrets” that she gives to the individuals. She fairly provides armors to her children whom she prepares for the British schools which provide very good education and accepts students very difficultly. She provides the children with academic knowledge that will enable them to be admitted to the schools they are targeting, as well

EA

TurkishBritish as strengthening their personalities and giving them an analytical perspective in the preparatory process. She transforms them into self-confident individuals who can stand on their feet and solve their problems on their own. Because the high test scores of the children do not mean too much to be successful in the British education system. In addition to the academic knowledge, the students who are able to analyze events correctly, are questioning, ambitious, confident and have goals can succeed in this system. Yeğinsu, who noted that the whole process should be tailored to achieve the desired results, stated that the students who came to England with fabricated consultancy companies become unsuccessful most of the time and return to their countries or lose money, time and labor in schools that do not contribute to their careers or personalities. “I give clues on how to walk through the challenging paths of education” Ömür Yeğinsu prepares an education map for each student who gets consultancy from her and she summarizes her works as follows: “At the first interview with the child, I identify personal secrets. He will go abroad and make a trip he doesn’t know about. He has a way ahead of him where he has no idea how to walk. A way full of difficulties. They have always walked straight down the road. I have to tell them the secrets of how to walk this difficult way. Where is the bend, where is the straight road, where should we climb? When I tell all this, the child feels ready for the journey.” So, which topics does Yeğinsu give priority to when preparing an education map? What does she pay attention to for the education secrets she will give to her clients? Yeğinsu continues: “we consider the person’s family structure, the growth between 1-4 years, education he took at home and school between 4-7 years, development and education between 7-13 and 1318 years, strong and weak sides of the persons older than 18, character structure, and how he wants to build the future in material-spiritual terms. What armors will he need to survive in the future of the world as a human being in his country and all the countries of the world? Is his country’s armor enough for him to stand up in the world? If not, what should be done? How can errors be corrected? The most important thing is that: All preparations should be made according to the capacity and abilities of the person before going on stage.”

“Your family and education are like your skin, they don’t change” Yeğinsu, who noted that the education map is a very individual study, continues: “The mentoring process is a process in which we form the pillars of the family and the future of the young. A mentoring meeting lasting for 1-2 hours. The family and the student, applying all of the information we provide, will realize that they create awareness of the individual’s character and education when they take the necessary steps towards their goals by making great progress in their own worlds.” Yeğinsu, who states that she directs the children and the youth going to the UK from Turkey for them to live in peace for 3-4 years and to become successful, says “after the age of 18, you will not be able to delete anything from your life. Your family and education are like your skin, you can’t change them, it hurts.” Yeğinsu identifies the success by saying “The person who can stand on two legs in life and survive not only in his own country but also in the world is called successful. This is also world citizenship. You will exist from nothing, so you will not destroy the existing. Brain and personality hand in hand means success.” Yeğinsu draws attention to certain age groups on the road to success and states that even if they do not receive special counseling, parents can observe their children very well at these ages, and that neglecting issues that need special attention will lead to failure of the children. Yeğnsu, who also mentioned about the importance of 0-7, 7-13 and 13-18 age groups, said “The most exciting and unmissable years in one’s development, brain and character structure. The most beautiful journeys of our families, schools and children... Years and development that you cannot change later even if you wish. I believe that the family, education and the country’s ministry of education play a very important role in these years. This is such a role that you may make mistakes that you cannot change for life and it will be difficult to remove.” 75

The Museum of the Moon is created by British artist Luke Jerram, sculpting by using the high-resolution NASA image of our the one and only satellite. The artwork offers an interactive experience of the Moon with a surround-sound and moonlight composition, which leaves a deep impression on the visitors. It’s also possible to have a drink or to join a lunar-themed yoga class under the moon. It’s up until January 2020 and entrance is free of charge.

One of the most popular destinations in summer is lavender fields around London. You don’t need to go to Provence to see these picturesque views of lavender fields. Since they’re popular and Instagram famous from July to September, they can get quite busy at the weekends, so I highly recommend you go the weekdays if possible. As well as taking the best photos with a purple background and bringing freshly picked lavender bunches to home, you can also buy natural goodies such as aromatherapy oils, soaps, fragrances and skincare products.

The firm which has started its operations in Turkey in 2016 has been serving with the

same name in the UK since the first quarter of 2018. They make not only design but also they produce the designed products and work with many specialist producers in Turkey for long years and offer competitive prices to its customers. Pekideal is a specialized firm in design and production of especially sustainable and organic boxes and packages of different sizes and quality, cardboard and fabric carrying bags, packaging for the food industry, cardboard and woven textile labels and accessories, cylinder boxes, leather, silicone and metal accessories for the textile industry, delivery boxes that may be used for online sales and special value-added boxes that can be folded flat with magnets. Packaging and labeling are among the most important elements of the brand Ersin Zorlu, Chairman of Pekideal, emphasizing the importance of packaging and labeling in representation of a brand, states that their priorities as a firm are not only making production for the customers, but also developing products according to their needs by acting solution-oriented. And says “We think that packaging and label are the most important variables after the product itself. Because the next points which take attention after the product are the packaging and the label.” Er-

sin Zorlu, who states that if there is no intimacy between packaging and product quality, there will be a reason for the consumer or user to question the product quality unconsciously, says; “In order to remove this possibility, it is important to be aware of the fact that packaging and label are actually important accessories used in the product. In fact, these accessories, which include the brand’s name clearly, namely packaging and label, must be directly proportional to the quality of the product.” Multinational design team Pekideal, whose secret of success lies in the international design team, has an experienced team especially in packaging, boxes, textile labels and branding. Zorlu, who draws atten-

tion to the fact that they provide diversity by working with designers from many countries such as the UK and Turkey as well as Japan, Portugal and Italy, says “we have a strong design team which we have worked together for long years.” Zorlu, stating that the customers can see the alternatives created by different eyes and abilities instead of working with only one designer, mentions that this diversity is an advantage for finding the best. Zorlu says “When the product to be sold is completed, you can contact us through www.pekideal. com and ensure that the right packaging and label is designed and produced for your product instead of realizing that you don’t have the proper packaging and label; this will save you serious time with healthy choices.”

From the Ottoman Primary School to Urla Design Library

A library dedicated to design The small domed Primary School covered with tiles, of the Ottoman Period, which Prof. Dr. Tevfik Balcıoğlu fell in love with at first sight, today hosts the lovers of history, culture, art and books as Urla Design Library. Love at first sight!

I

t is a small 16th-century domed building in Urla, Izmir, a few minutes of walk from Arasta. Although the residents say that the mosque is a masjid, it is registered as a masonry house. This small domed tile covered building, which was once really used as a home, but then registered as a masjid, had the fate of being used as an animal dome until it met with Prof. Dr. Tevfik Balcıoğlu... The adventure of this small building, which is a reference design library today, into Urla Design Library is actually a small love story. The feeling which has made this special building gained by the society and become an important reference library is the respect of Prof. Dr. Tevfik Balcıoğlu, who is an academician in the field of architecture and design, in design, occupation and historical environmental culture.

80

The founder of the Library, Prof. Dr. Tevfik Balcıoğlu tells the story of the abandoned structure as “It all started when I purchased a building. It is the first building which I bought by myself in life. It was the spring of 2005. We went to see an old, small building, which they called the mosque, which was suggested to my father-in-law. He was thinking ‘The building is very interesting, but what can I do with it?’. When I walked into the street and saw its silhouette in distance, I said ‘OK, I’m buying’. That’s how the passion has started.” The building, which Tevfik Balcıoğlu says he felt in love at first sight, is actually a Primary School built during the Ottoman Period*. When Balcıoğlu took action to rebuild this beautiful structure that required restoration, he started by revealing the identity of the building. It is thought that this building, on Kapan Mosque Street, has been built in 1560 on the same date as the mosque. Prof. Balcıoğlu thought “I would make the upper floor of the two-storey building a library and I’d collect all my books there, and my students would work here from time to time” and he applied for a scholarship call from the Swedish Lund University and received a certificate for protection and management of historical buildings in 2007. This training contributed on shaping the Primary School Project. But what puts the end to the project is a painful event; his classmate, Professor Faruk Tabak, a faculty member in Washington, passed away in 2008. Balcıoğlu brought his friend’s

books from the US, and named the upper floor ‘Faruk Tabak Reading Room’ and thus, the project turned into a special library. The historical building, which has gone through a long restoration process, is originally a square with a floor area of approximately 7.5m x 7.5m consisting of two independent floors. The project, which has been completed with years of effort, has been implemented with a successful restoration based on its original form, has begun to serve with the name “TB House: Urla Design Library and Faruk Tabak Reading Room” in 2017. It hosts events The upper floor of Urla Design Library, whose lower floor was designed as library, actually offers an exquisite space suitable for multipurpose use with its windows opening to four facades, a stove, a 6-meter-high dome, extremely balanced proportions and superb acoustics based on its original plan. The place is very suitable for Room orchestras, as well as it can host small-scale events such as meetings, seminars, workshops, music and yoga classes. In fact, fairy tale, poem, book reading days, art, design workshops, various courses and special events are organized for the children of the neighborhood besides the programs that are offered to all segments. These activities are organized out of the office hours, 15.00-18.00, in order not to deprive the children of the neighborhood from studying places. Accommodation is provided with a sofa on this floor.

Tevfik Balcıoğlu, the founder of Urla Design Library and professor of industrial design, who also worked in England, served as the founding president of the Department of Three Dimensional Design in Kent University’s Institute of Art and Design in 1992, and taught at the Institute for 10 years. Prof. Dr. Balcıoğlu, who preferred to pass his retirement years in London again after continuing his academic career in Izmir, did not leave his job and he continues to make new projects by giving consultancy in design. * The primary schools were developed after Fatih Sultan (II.) Mehmet (1421-1481) who built small schools beside mosques. The function of these schools, which normally had only one place, was to educate children aged 5 to 10 years. These buildings were sometimes built as large mosque complexes and sometimes as single buildings between the neighborhoods. Compared to the other social structures of the period, there is an effort to approach the child scale in the dimensions of primary schools.

The book collection of Urla Design Library, which is a private design reference library open to the public, mainly consists of personal books of Prof. Dr. Tevfik Balcıoğlu and Dr. Faruk Tabak, almost all of which are in English. The library includes more than 4.000 books of Faruk Tabak on world history brought from the USA and then published by his special ex-libris’ and the books on industrial design and architecture that Balcıoğlu brought together throughout his career. Due to the bookcase brought from the USA, the upper floor, which is covered with a dome, is called Faruk Tabak Reading Room. Continuing production after retirement 81

In 2017, Taluğ moved to London and founded his own consulting company which mainly focused on banking applications. Taluğ summarizes the interface design and user experience design as the works on designing the process and interaction that determines how the consumer can use the products in the most efficient way or how to meet a physical or digital product. Taluğ, states that UX - UI design, which consists of the intersection of many professional disciplines, is related to fields such as art-design, sociology, psychology, ergonomics, neuro-psychology, software engineering and research, and continues to say that; “I prefer works where I can communicate with all stakeholders of the project myself and take part in every step of the project instead of projects where the design is identified as just one step of the project. The design of the user experience has already been positioned in this way in the world.” Taluğ mentions about the meaning of London for himself as follows; “London is literally the equivalent of the word ‘cosmopolitan’. You have the chance to meet and work with professionals from every country in the world and it offers a very important experience. The experience I gained in the last year is very valuable for me in this respect. Since I came here, I have had the chance to meet and work with people from 13 different countries. The most striking aspect of my profession is that no project is like the previous one. Continuous learning and self-renewal are great motivations for life.

Sema Mann Fashion designer Sema Mann, born in 1972 in Kocaeli, came to London in 2000 for university education. Mann, who started working in management and marketing department, decided that this department was not suitable for her. Her dialogue with the fashion never ended even in the period when she got married and had a child. After working as a freelancer with many fashion designers, she decided to start her Fashion education which was her main purpose in coming to the UK. In 2017, she completed her education in the Fashion Workshop department of University for the Creative Arts, which is one of the best fashion schools in the world. This school, which is a special department of creative arts, is located in Milan, Paris and London. Another difference of this department, which teaches the techniques of fashion designers such as Dior and Chanel unlike the department of fashion design, is that it uses special designs and personal molds instead of ready molds. Therefore, Mann has the privilege of creating customized products and making special designs. Sema Mann, who founded her own workshop in early 2018, continues working in her own workshop. She mainly designs wedding dresses,

evening dresses and dresses for invitations. Sema Mann, who continues her artistic creation as a fashion designer, sums up what London means to her as follows: “Changing the norms and molds, going out of the mold, finding and putting things together, or wearing suits and sneakers... The comfort of people and their clothing styles are also indications of the freedom in London. So London means freedom to me. Of course, the dominant aspect for me is to change norms and molds because I look at it in terms of fashion.

Atakan Ilgazdağ

Advertisement-Film Music Producer Film-Series-Advertisement Music Producer Atakan Ilgazdağ, who had Crystal Apple, Golden Butterfly and many more similar awards so far, has moved to London with his family last year after his 20-year professional career in Turkey. Now he continues to work in London, which he calls “the homeland of good music”. There is music in every period of the life of Atakan Ilgazdağ who was born in Izmir in 1976. Ilgazdağ, who started to be interested in music during his elementary school years, took his first steps into the music world with TRT İzmir Children’s Choir. Then the Youth Choir and then 9 Eylül University Faculty of Fine Arts Sound Engineering… Ilgazdağ, who came to İstanbul at his 20s after İzmir, started collecting awards after a few years. Ilgazdağ defines his work as “music production for multimedia”. Ilgazdağ, who says “I write music in dynamic areas such as TV, radio, cinema, and the game industry” and continues as “I have been given awards such as Christal Apple and Golden Butterfly. Then, juries, interviews in industry magazines, etc. I produced sound logos for many national and international brands, for example, if I murmur ‘ooo Bekko’, you will immediately remember Beko which is a well known world brand in England. With its simple yet impressive jingle consisting of 4 notes, it is in the memory of many people for almost 15 years...”

Ilgazdağ tells the pleasant and difficult sides of his work too... Ilgazdağ says “The pleasant side of my job is that you use your creativity in a different way every day; one day I produce something jazzy for an ad, and the next day I examine arabesque pieces for a TV series, and then I find myself sorting into elements.” Ilgazdağ, who said “In this case, being able to remain simple is one of the most difficult aspects of being a media composer”, continues as follows: “Simple does not mean easy as anyone who is involved in creative works will know. In my work, simple means bringing a work which you make professionally in a manner that can be listened by an average listener. Regardless of it being TV series, movies, commercials or games, you are expected to describe the product in an auditory dimension and in the shortest time possible.” Ilgazdağ, who continues his works in London, says “London and this island have always been the homeland of good music. Most of the artists I’ve loved and been impressed with since I was a child are from here. I like catching people in the ear, hooking them. England is an island country, I think it is a nice combination… I think everything will be very nice!”
