/ FROM THE EDITOR
Dear readers, We are here with the first issue of 2020... As the Turkish British Magazine, we are also embarking on a new era in 2020. We will continue to publish our magazine every two months, but from now on, each issue will be simultaneously published in English and Turkish. The English version will continue to be published in print, and the Turkish version will be available to read online, at the same time. In this new era, we are also bringing you another innovation... Using the advantages of technology, you will be able to read the magazine by scanning the QR code on its cover. You can access the .pdf versions of the magazine in both languages from your mobile phone, with the help of the QR code. As the Turkish British Magazine, we will be publishing 6 issues in 2020 and we are also preparing sector-specific supplements where we will focus on the various agenda of the world of business. We have already started working on our special supplement on “Turkish Tourism“, which will be available with our March-April issue. Brexit remains on the agenda... In the first issue of 2020, we have analysed the developments after the general election, which was the most important issue in UK’s agenda. The first order of business is, of course, Brexit… In the snap general election in Britain last month, the Conservative Party won with an overwhelming majority and immediately began working. The Brexit vote also came out of Parliament very quickly. By 31 January 2020, Britain will have officially left the European Union. However, ongoing trade relationships will continue as before during the transition period, until 31 December 2020. 2020 will be an important year for both the Turkish and the British economies. With the Brexit process, the UK has become a target market with high potential for Turkey. This process offers important opportunities to Turkish businesspeople. A period of mutual cooperation and investments begins in many sectors, from real estate to food, health to tourism, retail to textiles. As Turkish British, we pay close attention to this process. Regarding this process, we are also aware that Turkish businesspeople are keeping a close eye on the Ankara Agreement... Applications for the Ankara Agreement, which is of great importance to Turkish businesspeople, will continue until 31 December 2020. Meanwhile, objections to the changes in the application terms for the Ankara Agreement in 2018 and their retrospective implementation are still ongoing, and the legal process is pending before the court. The case initiated by those AA visaholders who were adversely affected by the changes, will be assessed by the Court of Appeal and the hearing will take place on March 26, 2020. We will be following the details. The details of the announcement that Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, and his wife Duchess Meghan Markle are stepping back from their royal duties, which had a bombshell effect on the global agenda, are also included among this issue’s highlights. An aspiration 60 years in the making, the first “Fully Domestically Produced Car” in Turkey was introduced last month. While some people really liked it, others criticized it. We present you our review in this issue, without any comments, leaving you to praise or critique. As the global transition to electric cars is gaining speed, the electric car planned to be produced in Turkey has noteworthy characteristics with its technological features and design. We are happy to present you with our magazine once again, with original content ranging from British street food to news from the economy and world of business, startup projects, technology, health, culture and art. In the new era, our magazine will continue to be distributed in Turkey and the UK. It will continue to appear at significant events. Turkish British has undertaken an important mission in both the UK and Turkey. Similar to the previous year, we will continue to participate in international events of the business world, as a media sponsor or partner and bring them to our readers with our magazine. We are very proud of our online reading rates, which have quickly reached very high figures. Our magazine is followed and read by approximately 50,000 people every month, and we thank you for all your support. Kew Gardens 2019 @aylatorun You can also follow the Turkish British magazine on our website and subscribe to online and print versions to be delivered to your address. After the British Parliament ratified the treaty, which regulates put forth the conditions for leaving the EU (Brexit) on January 9, the bill became lawful an Act and entered into force with the approval royal assent of Queen Elizabeth II. How did the process work? In the UK, historic results came from the polls of the early general election, which had been overshadowed by the Brexit debates. In the snap general election held on December 12th, the Conservative Party won 43.6 percent of the vote, and gained sole mandate with 365 MPs. The main opposition Labour Party lost 59 seats and suffered one of the heaviest defeats in its history. Johnson, who strengthened his hand against the Remainers with his victory, brought the bill to Parliament right after the election, and, with a vote on 20 December, the Parliament decided for Brexit to take place on 31 January 2020.
Three-stage approval to the EU (Withdrawal Agreement) Draft The Brexit bill, passed by in the first stage vote in the House of Commons on 20 December, was approved in the final voting on 9 January after being held open to amendments in the House of Commons for a while, and sent to the House of Lords. The House of Lords had asked for amendments in the five articles of the Brexit bill in their meetings since January 20. The draft agreement, which is officially called the EU (Withdrawal Agreement) and which regulates the Brexit conditions, which that allowed UK to leave the EU with an agreement on January 31, was put into enacted after the approval of the Queen Elizabeth II after passing through the House of Lords. With the approval of the EU Parliament on January 29, the Brexit agreement was accepted.
/ FROM THE UK
December 31, 2020, the end of the transition process If negotiations on Brexit or the deals go according to the set timetable, the full separation will be on 31 December 2020 when the EU will end its association with the United Kingdom, a 47-year member of the European Union. If no trade deals are agreed and approved by the end of the year, the UK will face export tariffs on trade with the EU.
What is the expected schedule for the country? With UK departure from the EU it had joined in 1973, this will be For the first time, a country will have left the Union. when the United Kingdom left the EU it joined in 1973. After the UK officially left the EU with a withdrawal agreement on January 31, it is entering a transition period planned to end on December 31, 2020. During this period, the UK will effectively remain in the EU’s customs union and the common market. However, it will not be involved in the political institutions and there will not be a UK member in the European Parliament.
July 1st; the last day of the trade negotiations Until the end of 2020, the parties will negotiate a comprehensive agreement to regulate their future relations. The first priority will be to negotiate a trade agreement with the EU. The two parties will meet back at the negotiation table in a few months, to map out how their relationship will work from now on. Trade and security agreements will be at the top of the agenda. In the meantime, existing transactions will continue as they are. The negotiations will focus on everything from trade to fishing, aviation, medicine and security. If no result is achieved by July 1, the United Kingdom will be able to ask the EU for a one-off extension. The EU wants the deadline extended until 2022, arguing that it is impossible to reach an agreement on all of these issues in less than a year. However, the Government does not want the transition period to be extended in any way and insists the negotiations to be completed by the end of 2020. If no agreement is reached, trade relations between the two sides will be handled according to World Trade Organization rules. During the transition, the UK will continue to adhere to EU rules.
How will the Ankara Agreement be affected? The Ankara Agreement visa, which enables Turkish entrepreneurs with a permit to work and live in the United Kingdom, will also come to an end with Brexit. The Ankara Agreement is a right, which at the time had been based on an agreement with the customs union, in 1963. After long legal struggles, Turkish citizens who applied through the Ankara Agreement have obtained this right and settled in the UK by establishing a company in the UK or as Turkish workers. However, the UK has no obligation to continue the Ankara Agreement after leaving the European Union. Unless there is an unforeseen change, those applications made by 31 December 2020, the date of Brexit, and any rights acquired, will not be affected. Those who have obtained the Ankara Agreement, officially known as the ECAA (Europan Communities Association Agreement) Turkish businessperson visa, will continue to move forward in the legal process through to naturalization, provided they fulfill the required conditions. No new visa applications will be received under the Ankara Agreement from 31 December 2020, when the relationship with the EU will officially end. Instead, a new category of visa which is devised for investors and entrepreneurs, is expected to replace it.

NEWS intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen.” The Duke and Duchess said that living between England and North America would enable their son to “appreciate the royal tradition into which he was born,” and provide them with the opportunity to focus on the next chapter of their lives.
They’re going to live in Canada.
Brexit replaced by “Megxit” Brexit was dethroned from the country’s agenda by the news that Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, and his wife Duchess Meghan Markle are stepping down from their royal duties, and thus replaced by “Megxit” in a reference to Brexit.
T
he United Kingdom entered 2020 with news that surprised both the royal family and the whole world. The Prince and Princess have resigned from their duties... In early January, Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, and his wife, Duchess Meghan, announced that they are stepping down from their senior roles in the royal family and would work to be financially independent. The Sun used the term “Megxit” in its headline, as a play on the words referring to Brexit, Britain’s process of leaving the European Union, which has been occupying the primary place in the British press agenda for a long time.
New decision in the new year The Duke and Duchess of Sussex said in a statement: “After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. While the couple will be living between England and North America, they stated that they will continue to honor their duties to the Queen, the Commonwealth and their patronages. Harry and Meghan also said they plan to establish a charity. “Especially with your encouragement over the last few years, we felt ready to make this arrangement,” the couple said in a message to their Instagram followers, and said they would continue to announce future developments. It has long been felt that there was a rift between the couple and the royal family. The couple had gone to Canada with their son Archie, born in May, taking six weeks off their royal duties during the Christmas period. After returning to the UK, Harry and Meghan visited the High Office of Canada in London and thanked them for their hospitality. Meghan, who has starred in films and television series in the past, had lived in Toronto, Canada, while starring in Suits, the US TV series.
Harry criticised for making an emotional decision Dickie Arbiter, the former press secretary of Buckingham Palace, commented that such a decision showed that Harry was acting emotionally. Arbiter said the news in the British press about the couple, their children and the problems they had, also played a role in this decision. Prince Harry had strong reactions to the British media’s harassment of his wife and likened the media’s attitude to that shown to his mother, Princess Diana. British newspapers reported that the statement by Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, and his wife, Duchess Meghan Markle, announcing their withdrawal from their royal posts, had also caused grave disappointment at the Palace. Prince Harry is ranked in 6th place to the throne after his father Prince Charles, his brother Prince William and his three children. After it was revealed that Harry and Meghan were getting married, there had been a lot of news about Meghan’s past acting career and family history, particularly in British tabloids.

WeWALK: The Turkish innovation that draws worldwide attention: WeWALK
Kürşat Ceylan, a 33-year-old Turkish entrepreneur who develops intelligent walking stick that gives location and direction information, aims to change the lives of approximately 253 million visually impaired people in the world. WeWALK is not an ordinary cane... Also called “smart cane”, the product warns visually impaired people by featuring obstacles at chest and head level. The cane used by connecting to a smartphone can also be integrated with mobile applications. The smart cane has a touchpad for commanding, a microphone for giving voice commands, a compass and speakerphone when desired. WeWALK is constantly gaining new features with the addition of software updates. In an interview with a correspondent of Anadolu Agency, stating that international investors showed great interest in the invention that changes the lives of millions of visually impaired people , Turkish entrepreneur Kürşat Ceylan said, “I designed WeWALK with two friends: Gökhan Meriçliler and Sadık Ünlü. We are currently running as 3 partners. I am 33 years old. We have been in the market with our product for 5 months.” In his explanation about what WeWalk is and how it has changed the lives of the visually impaired Kürşat Ceylan said: “WeWalk is a smart cane designed for the visually impaired. It has 3 main features. First, the visually impaired person can detect the obstacles on the ground by walking the cane to the left and right while walking on the road. But obstacles at head level cannot be detected. Second, technology is developing very fast. Especially navigation technologies, smart city technologies... For a visually impaired person, audio navigation is a unique blessing... You need to use a white cane in one hand and the phone in the other hand. Can we give all this directly to the cane? We wanted the person to have access to information and technology from the cane they hold. The smart cane now alerts the visually impaired person by vibration by seeing obstacles at head level. It can directly match our smartphones.”

Turkey unveils prototypes of 1st domestic car by realizing a long-waited dream
T
hink of a dream that turns into reality 60 years later. A dream for which a team of dedicated engineers worked hard in 1961. Alas, it was not realized but its story became very famous in Turkey with a movie shot in 2008. Producing a fully homegrown car was a long-waited dream for Turkey. After 60 years, Turkey now introduced a preview version of its firstto-be-domestic car models which will be also fully electric. Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called in 2011 for investors to manufacture Turkey’s first indigenous car, following the appetite of the 1960s. Upon his call, in June 2018, five Turkish industry giants including Anadolu Group, BMC, Kok Group, Turkcell and Zorlu Holding and an umbrella organization, the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB) agreed to create Turkey’s Automobile Initiative Group (TOGG) in a bid to produce the country’s first domestic car. TOGG was on the scene unveiling the preview version of the C-SUV models of first fully homemade car project expected to create an investment of cost 22 billion Turkish lira ($3.7 billion) aiming to produce 175,000 electric cars annually. 18 Turkish British Magazine I January - February 2020

business models such as demand-based mobility, data-driven business models, autonomous and sharing vehicles. Everyone is at the beginning of the electric and connected automobile race in the world. Agile, creative, collaborative and user-oriented organizations will succeed in this race. We are in the right place at the right time.”
Designed by being inspired from Turkish culture
The unveiling ceremony named “Innovation Journey Meeting” was held at the Gebze Information Technologies Valley located in the Marmara Region on December 27 2019. Erdogan and over 1,000 people were among the witnesses at the ceremony. “Today, we are witnessing a historic day, the fruition of Turkey’s 60-year-long dream,” Turkish President Erdogan said at the ceremony. He said TOGG will manifacture not only for Turkish market but also aims to create a global brand. Erdogan underlined that the cars will be environmentally friendly and had an advance order for the car. After the speech, he had a test drive with the C-SUV model. The fully electric SUV will come in two different engine configurations with 200 horsepower or 400 horsepower, TOGG CEO Gurcan Karakas said during the ceremony. Karakas explained their conception of the “new league” and the “innovation journey” as follows; “Turkey’s Automobile” project has started in the right place at the right time. Mega trends, social areas and changing technologies transformed the automobile into a new living space after home and work. With this transformation, profit pools in automotive industry are changing hands. Growth in the sector will come from more profitable new
He said the SUV is the fastest growing segment of in the last 5 years and will remain so in the coming years both in the world and also in Turkey. Stating that Turkish customers favour SUV models most, he shared further details; “Also, we know that this is the most suitable segment to create a popular brand as it is the most desired segment by Turkish consumers, alas a domestically produced alternative is almost nonexistent. Intellectual and industrial property rights 100% belong to Turkey. We are working to create Turkey’s global brand in a professional integrity, with all our strength and with the bests in the world. From the very beginning, we planned our 15-year roadmap step by step. We formed a team mostly of engineers who are competent, dedicated people with global work experiences and with an average work experience of over 10 years. Our team, which grows every day, has reached to 114 people. We created an organization that can make fast and agile decisions and adopted a useroriented approach and we listen to the market and user expectations in all our decisions. We value all the experience and competencies of our country. While building a new car brand, we also create a global brand and enter a competition with the world. We will have Turkey’s Automobile with its broad product line, conceptual charm, technological capabilities, industrial power and details inspired from our culture.”

He announced that prominent Turkish designer Murat Gunak was among the TOGG’s designers during all this process. Designer Gunak worked for Peugeout, Volkswagen and Mercedes. He is well-known with his design of Mercedes – Benz C Class models. Karakas said, “We received support from Gunak in eliminating the 18 domestic and foreign design houses to 3, in the formation of the final design theme and in the selection process of Pininfarina, which made our theme 3-dimensional. We registered our original design which we in September, 2019”. He put ambitious targets as saying that TOGG will become a platform for the execution and delivery of new technology and new business ideas to the users during the transformation of the automobiles into a smart device, likening the automotive industry with the mobile phone industry. In that sense, Karakas said, TOGG will be the first company to proudly represent Turkey in the global mobility world. “We believe that this will also make a difference in the world,” he noted. Karakas also stated that the brand name of the domestic car will be determined until the middle of 2020. It is important for the brand name to have both cultural and global implications also be original and strong, he said. 20 Turkish British Magazine I January - February 2020

Automotive sector leads Turkey’s exports
By 2030, the TOGG plans to produce 5 different models on a joint e-platform, with fully owned intellectual and industrial property rights. The $3.7 billion investment will be free of any tax cuts, enjoy free land allocation and interest rate reductions. The project will employe 4.3 million people including 300 qualifed personnel. The indirect workforce created thanks to the project will reach 20,000.
Turkey to be Europe’s first non-classical born electric SUV manufacturer in 2022 Turkish government officials said that the recharhing infrastructure before the cars hit the roads in 2022 will be ready but did not provide further details. Turkish government will guarantee the purchase of 30,000 units of the vehicle by 2035. For the first time in the world, Holographic Assistant technology will be used in the domestic car which will provide drivers with some advantages and enhance interactivity between the driver and the car. The battery lifetime of the vehicles is announced for 8 years while the fast recharging duration is planned for 30 minutes. According to the information provided by TOGG, Turkey will take its place in the industry as Europe’s first non-classical born electric SUV manufacturer as of 2022.
Nonetheless, Turkey is currently a big automobile exporter to Europe thanks to domestic production of a number of global brands like Ford, Fiat Chrysler, Renault, Toyota and Hyundai. The automotive industry is champion of Turkey’s exports with $30.6 billion in 2019 and accounts 16.5% of country’s total exports, according to data of the Uludag Automotive Industry Exporters’ Association located in Bursa. European Union (EU) led Turkish automotive industry exports with $23.4 billion and created 77% of Turkey’s total exports in 2019. The exports of private cars stood at $11.4 billion, presenting almost 37% of the total automotive exports of the country. Germany led among EU countries by importing cars and automotive industry equipment from Turkey worthy of $4.4 billion, the data showed. France is the second biggest importer of cars produced in Turkey with $3.4 billion in 2019, while Italy is the third with $2.9 billion. The U.K. occupied the fourth space in the list with $2.45 billion automotive sector imports from Turkey last year. Conventional private cars, minibus, midibus and bus are among those manufactured in Turkey while there is no production of a fully electric car model.
Global electric car industry at a glance
As part of the efforts to tackle climate change and keeping up with technological developments, electric vehicles have been spreading over the past 10 years. The deployment of electric cars surpassed 5 million in 2018, marking an increase of 63% from the year before, a report by International Energy Agency (IEA) showed. China had the biggest share of the stock with 2.3 million cars representing 45% of the total while Europe accounted for 24% and the United States 22% of it, the IEA’s Global EV Outlook 2019 revealed. In terms of European countries, Germany, France, Netherlands, Norway and the UK lead electric car stock with favorable government policies, incentives, and infrastructure investment. In parallel with the growth of the electric car fleet, the number of charging points was estimated to be around 5.2 million by the end of 2018, which is up 44% from the previous year, according to IEA data.

The project is calculated to contribute $50 billion to the country’s GDP and help reduce $7.5 billion of Turkey’s current account deficit. Turkey’s current account deficit is expected to be $30 billion by the end of 2019, according to temporary data of the country’s Trade Ministy.
Turkey’s Energy Ministry expects over 1 million electric cars by 2030 Over 1 million electric vehicles are anticipated to be on Turkey’s roads by 2030, Turkey’s Energy and Natural Resources Minister announced. “By 2022 or 2023, we hope to see our own indigenous automobile on the roads,” Fatih Donmez said. Following the country’s launch of its first indigenous and all-electric automobile prototype, the energy ministry is now planning to assess the impact of 1 million charge points on the country’s electricity distribution network, Dönmez said. “These points should be able to charge a car in nearly 15-25 minutes, depending on the car battery’s capacity and features, which means there needs to be a capacity of 50-100 kilowatt-hours in
What are Turkey’s numbers in electric cars?
Turkey’s roads currently witness the journey of around 1,000 electric cars while the number of the charging points are at the same level. According to newly conducted study by SHURA Energy Transition Center based in Istanbul, 2,5 million electric cars could hit the roads by 2030. It is estimated to create 10% of the total vehicle stock of the country in the same year. At the same period, around 1,000 charging points are expected to be placed. Currently, transportation sector represents 26% of Turkey’s total final energy demand and it ranks as the second largest responsible sector for CO2 emissions as it is predominantly based on oil products. 22 Turkish British Magazine I January - February 2020
the grid,” he explained. Therefore, fast-charging units located in the selected areas need to have sufficient power supply to cope with this electricity requirement. “TOGG’s expectation from us [energy ministry] is to include not only the big cities in Turkey but also other smaller cities in Anatolia where there is great interest,” the energy minister said.
Domestic car production a 60-year goal for Turkey Turkey’s efforts to produce an fully homegrown car model goes back to 1960s. A team was assigned for producing the first domestic car called Devrim (Revolution) in 1961 by then-President Cemal Gursel. The team designed and manufactured 4 cars that were unveiled on October 29, 1961, during Republic Day ceremony of the country. Turkish Locomotive and Motor Industry then named Eskisehir Railway Factories was used as the manufacturing center of the 4 models. However, one of the cars stopped due to insufficient gasoline while President Gursel was in it for a test drive. The stopping of the car due to lack of gasoline led the way for discussions about the success of the project and turned into a negative propaganda against Devrim. The government cancelled the project and Turkey maintained its desire for a fully homegrown car. One of the Devrim cars remained in a working stated and it is currently kept in a specially constructed glazed garage in the garden of Turkish Locomotive and Engine Industry in Eskisehir, a Central Anatolian province. The historical story of Devrim was filmed by Turkish director Tolga Ornek in 2008 who defined it “as the story of a dream.” Devrim was also taken to the unveiling ceremony of TOGG prototypes in Gebze.

“Many entrepreneurs or investors knock on my door” “I loved football and I saw a lot of people around me interested in it. The database is my area of expertise and football is a subject that can very well be dealt with on the database. This is why I dreamed of creating the largest football database in the world and I was able to achieve it, said Yurdanur. In 2016, Maçkolik.com sold all its shares to a British company. Then, in January 2019, the second successful attempt to sell Masomo to a British company led the way. “I am happy to have won the title of the first Turkish entrepreneur, thanks to the two sales which allowed me to open these two companies. Because the second sale proved that the first was not a chance success. Now many entrepreneurs or investors are knocking on my door, ”explained Yurdanur about the sale of mackolik. “Perform, which acquired Maçkolik, was one of the world’s leading online sports media companies and was trying to grow around the world through acquisitions. I met them in London in 2011 and we got to know each other. They said they could take our majority share, but I was not thinking of selling our majority share at the time.In 2012 this time

we wanted to sell our business and they were immediately interested. Following very short negotiations, we initially sold 51% of our shares and the rest in 2016. In 2013, we moved to London as a family. Masomo, one of Yurdanur’s successful companies, was sold in January 2019. We are still in the earn-out period right now. This game called Kafa Topu and an English called Head Ball that we developed with my British and Turkish partners, has become very popular in the world. continued Yurdanur. “It has been downloaded over 50 million times worldwide and is still downloaded by at least 100,000 people a day. Seeing the success of this game, the other big gaming companies contacted me and we agreed with Miniclip, who thought it was best for us and also made best offer, and we sold all our shares.
“The biggest problem in Turkey is a hollow admiration for foreigners” Yurdanur, who has sold its two successful businesses, has new dreams on its mind and new projects on the agenda. One of the projects is Admost ... Admost is a product that generates more profits by optimizing the advertisements displayed in mobile games and also performs a profit / loss analysis of users of these games and applications. The first clients of Admost are Maçkolik and Masomo, and besides them it has more than 40 other clients shortly joined in. “It is a product on which I have spent a lot of time, and I have tried to pass on all my 30 years of experience , and I think it will be successful; added Yurdanur. “In fact, what I have tried to do with this product is to show the Turkish people that a technology product can also come from Turkey, not just from others, that they should have a lot more con-
fidence in them. I think Turkey’s biggest problem is a hollow foreign admiration and being unable to see our own success. “The Admost project team in Turkey is made up of that of Maçkolik with whom Yurdanur has worked for at least 15 years.
“It takes me half an hour to decide to invest in a business “ “I contribute to them both financially and in terms of information and network, and I try to help them develop”, states Yurdanur, who has invested in more than 20 start-ups .After 25 years of entrepreneurial adventure marked by many failed projects, Yurdanur is today enjoying international success.
“People think that I succeed in everything I do, but what they ignore is that the number of my failures is much higher,”
“People think that I succeed in everything I do, but what they ignore is that the number of my failures is much higher,” said Yurdanur. He continues saying: ‘’ Each successful project provided me with unique information about the type work that does not work and why. This is why, it generally does not take me more than half an hour before deciding whether or not to invest in a business.”

BUSINESS invested in 4 to 5 companies and paid a heavy tax each year. Yurdanur draws the attention of those who take the road with the idea of “I will come here and I will do any job” on the fact that the possibilities that they difficulties they may encounter are very great, “London is an expensive city and if you don’t have a lot of income you may find yourself looking to resume your lifestyle in Turkey, “he said. There is a very interesting network here, if you trust yourself and have a good product, you can target not only the UK but the whole world from here, so you should always meet different people without getting bored. Otherwise, life here can become unbearable.” added Yurdanur.
People should live where they feel happy
Almost every day, people from everywhere who want a new project idea or a new investment consult Yurdanur. Yurdanur states that it is his principle to give everyone a positive or negative answer. “Some people write projects without really thinking about it, without any research, and I respond to them by explaining first how to approach someone rather than giving them my opinion on the project. I look at the projects of people who have a decent approach, and if I’m interested, I talk to them by Skype or face to face. Many different factors are gaining importance in this process. I look at the project itself as well as if the contractor and my frequency match. Sometimes I am wrong, but I think I am successful. After all, each unsuccessful choice increases my success rate with the next choices. “ states Yurdanur.
Do not hit the road saying “I will do any kind of job” Yurdanur, who came to London in 2013 thanks to the Ankara agreement and who created an exemplary model, says that he created 3 companies, 26 Turkish British Magazine I January - February 2020
Yurdanur who expresses his joy in living with his family in London says that what he missed most is the hot weather in Turkey ... Yurdanur, whose two daughters, 15 and 18, are studying at the American School in London, can spend a lot of time with his wife, a biochemist doctor. “Because we live in the center, we can reach everywhere very easily.” said Yurdanur, speaking of his days in London. “I love jazz, I am a member of a jazz club, I go when I can. My wife likes to sing Turkish classical music, she sings in a choir. While we like to try food from different countries, there is a Turkish restaurant where we feel at home, the Ekin restaurant on Belsize Road, where we like to meet with our friends there every time.” Yurdanur spends his holidays with his family in Turkey for 2-3 months on Summer sailing boat on the sea. If i had to choose between London and Turkey, I would say the Greek islands, including the Aegean Sea ... Yurdanur believes that people should live where they feel happy. “Every geography on earth is precious and important to me. Yurdanur concludes by saying: “I do not make a distinction between people according to where they come from, what religion they believe in , what race they belong to, what language they speak, but appreciate them according to whether they are hardworking, whether they are honest, if they are of good will or not.” “I think most of the readers of this magazine live in the UK, so I suggest they look at the world from this perspective and try to make it a habitable place for humans. If they look like that, they will feel home here and they will be happy. But if we make those distinctions, we will be make it hard to live for the future generations .”

“Beygir.com was very popular but we couldn’t make any money” In 1995, the computer engineer left Arçelik with 5 other friends and founded one of the first software companies in Turkey named Coretech “So my entrepreneurial adventure started and I have always been very fond of this adventure for 25 years,” says Yurdanur. “We did an excellent job for 5 years with Coretech, our first company. Since Internet was not very popular at the time, we made software for large companies and we had a team of 80 people. I was responsible for projects abroad and a software that we developed for Unilever has been accepted as standard worldwide and we have installed it in more than 20 countries. At Coretech, we have developed software for many companies such as P&G, Tefal, Pfizer, but after a while I started to think that software development for others was not very sustainable, and that we should rather earn money by using software instead of selling software and from 1999 on the basis of a project which was initially educational but which later became a professional project, we founded Beygir.com , the largest database of horseracing races. We liked Beygir.com this site which attracted a lot of attention and which was one of the first sites in Turkish in Turkey, but we could not earn much money “.said Yurdanur explaining the process that followed thereafter.
Mackolik.com has become Turkey’s largest sports site In 2002, following Beygir.com, we created Turkey’s biggest sports site Mackolik.com. We started our B2C activity with Mackolik. com under Koktail A.Ş. created in 2002 and so we separated from Coretech, which conducts B2B activities. In 2009, I left Coretech with my actions and I focused only on Internet and mobile business, “explains Yurdanur.

30 Turkish British Magazine I January - February 2020
While ICUBE program that launched by Istanbul Science Park last year, supported 50 entrepreneurs up to now, it also succeeded to bring 20 start-ups to the UK market. The general manager of Istanbul Science Park Yasin Erol evaluated the activities that have been done along with ICUBE programme up to date. According to Yasin Erol; “ICUBE programme which was established in October 2018 serves as the International Accelerator Program, whose aim is to support entrepreneurs that mainly located within Istanbul provincial borders to entry into the UK market and strengthen them in overseas markets. Each term, 25 start-ups that have internationalization potential are accepted to ICUBE International Accelerator Programme by our well-experienced expert team members. These start-ups are mentored in many areas from finance to law, from project development to digital marketing.
/ START UP
By the end of March 2020, we will complete the second term of the ICUBE programme. We are taking 10 graduate entrepreneurs who successfully completed the second term ICUBE International Acceleration Program to the UK to meet with foreign investors and conduct sales negotiations with their potential customers. Thus, our entrepreneurs have chance to get opportunity to meet local and foreign investors in the UK market and examine investment opportunities on the spot. Entertech also covers all the expenses of the entrepreneurs that coming to UK.
WE HAVE FOUR IMPORTANT GOALS According to Yasin EROL; entrepreneurship come to an important point in Turkey, and stated they are carrying out programmes in Istanbul Science Park for startups to attract investment and to support their growth by identifying the deficiencies and developing sustainable solutions in this ecosystem. Additionally, he also mentioned that start-ups, which would like to get benefit from the ICUBE programme, should meet some priority criteria. The infrastructure of technological companies in science parks is very suitable for participation in the program. In addition, many SMEs developing technology-based products can easily benefit from the opportunities in our program We have four important goals here.
• To develop the products of technologybased companies with professional trainers and mentors. • To increase the existing sales capacities of companies and to provide access to the needed funding sources. • To involve in global business development networks by providing access to international markets. • Bringing them together with national and international investor networks to create appropriate business partnerships with potential investors.
Strong Interest at The ICUBE Second Term Demo Day Event ICUBE International Accelerator Programme project, which was supported by the Istanbul Development Agency within the scope of the Entrepreneurship Financial Support Programme in 2018 and executed under the leadership of Istanbul Science Park, has realized an important event. The second term entrepreneurs of the ICUBE In-
ternational Acceleration Programme, which aims to support entrepreneurship focused on technology, innovation and creativity, had the opportunity to introduce their business ideas and projects to investors within the scope of Business Networking Framework at the ICUBE Demo Day Istanbul event. There was intense participation in this event, which was held on 18 December 2019. Entrepreneurs had not only had opportunities to present their projects within the scope of the event but also many candidates that want to be an entrepreneur had the opportunity to closely monitor the developments. Speaking at the event, Istanbul Science Park General Manager Yasin Erol stated that we continue to work with our team to generalize entrepreneurship in Turkey and to make a difference by realizing the sustainable projects. We are trying to be a compass for entrepreneurs. In the first period, we received good returns. We took 10 of our entrepreneurs to London. The projects of our entrepreneurs who met with investors in London attracted a lot of attention and many of them reached the stage of contract at the point of receiving investment. We are trying to be on the road and trying to keep the entrepreneurs on the road. Additionally, he emphasises that in today’s world, an entrepreneur without an international idea does not have the chance to survive.
ENTERTECH General Manager Yasin Erol stated that “the goal is to reach more entrepreneurs with ICUBE International Accelerator Programme that brings entrepreneurs together with investors.”

BUSINESS to undertake these in your own warehouse and team for your own company. However, when you sell through Amazon FBA this cost goes down to zero. Once you see this type of logistics centre with your own eyes, you again realize what great an opportunity it is to start selling via Amazon FBA. Coming back to the subject of this article, I would like to continue to give tips on starting your sales on Amazon in 2020, expanding your seller account and planning accordingly. Now that we are entering a new year, it’s a good idea to talk about how you should plan for 2020. Until now, when shopping, the seasons that you had cared about as buyers only become much more important when you are a seller. For example, at the time I wrote this article, I took advantage of Black Friday discounts to buy and meet many of my needs. One hour spent on Amazon in front of my computer was sufficient for my purposes. I didn’t have to make any preparations. On the other hand, as an Amazon FBA seller, I managed a very different process. I had already completed the planning, purchasing and shipping of products to Amazon’s warehouse much earlier, so that my products would be ready for sale on Amazon. When you become an Amazon Seller yourself, the dates and periods you should consider in 2020 are briefly as follows:
January - February - March
New job opportunities in the new year: Welcome 2020 New beginnings are always exciting. I would like to start this article by wishing all of you success and happiness ‘n 2020. In this month’s article, I will be discussing how you can enter the new year in a planned way. Murat Buyurgann muratbuyurgan.com
L
ast month, I took a trip to Amazon’s logistics hub in Tilbury. As the UK’s largest Amazon logistics hub, Tilbury employs 4,000 people. It wouldn’t be very accurate to define these hubs, called Amazon Fulfilment Centres, as warehouses. The whole process, from the bulk entry of products to the delivery to customers, is managed in these hubs. You would need to invest hundreds of thousands of pounds if you wanted

Due to the busy Black Friday and Christmas shopping in November and December, you may feel a decline in the sales in January. The period of January, February and March will be the right time to consume the remaining products in stock with discounts and to finance the purchasing processes of new products. January 25 Chinese New Year, February 14 Valentine’s Day, 22 March Mother’s Day are among the special days to consider in the first quarter of the year.
April - May - June The month of April is a period to be given special consideration because of Easter. Due to the long holiday period, the number of people going abroad for vacation purposes can affect your sales. You can think of May as the opening of the wedding season. If your products are about newlyweds, May and beyond will be a busy period. Festivals begin in June. Father’s Day will be celebrated on June 21st, the month of the Wimbledon tennis tournament. Euro 2020 European Football championship will begin in June. Group D matches, semi-finals and finals will be played in London.
/ E-COMMERCE
Applications for the Prime Day taking place in July, will begin in April and continue until midMay. Therefore, the months of April and May are important for Amazon FBA sellers both to prepare their products and to apply for Prime Day discounts.
July - August - September July is an important month for Amazon FBA Sellers. You can increase your sales volumes considerably in one day, by making discounts on the Prime Day, which is celebrated every year. In order to sell your products at Prime Day deals, you must set your prices at least 20% below the lowest retail price in the last 30 days. Your product must have at least 3 stars and product images must comply with Amazon standards. You should apply for Prime Day in April and May. Late July and August are a period when schools are on holiday. This means you may feel a decline in sales in August. If your products are summer products, this period will be a period of increased sales. September is a period of increased sales to students before the schools are opened, aptly named “Back to school.” If your products are of interest to students, this will be an active period for you.

October - November - December These months may be the most active periods of the year. The last week of November is a time when you can turn Black Friday and Cyber Monday into opportunities. Although discounts in product prices will reduce your profit margins, the increase in sales volumes will give you the opportunity to enjoy a week where your total profit will increase. After Black Friday which lasts a week, Christmas purchases begin, right after the Cyber Monday discounts end. You will be able to finish the year with a busy Christmas sale until December 25th. I have set out a document so you can make your plans for 2020. Rediscovery of the QR code... QR codes with infinite content depth, especially with compelling content that pops up instantly on mobile phones, have started grabbing attention only recently. The mysterious world of QRs, which can store almost any industry-specific content, is ready to be rediscovered!
T
he QR code (Quick Response Code) is a type of ‘matrix-2’-sized barcode originally designed for the Japanese automotive industry in 1994. It was invented to monitor and manage the process of the automobile production line. Some inventions have a life span that exceeds the inventor. QR not only regained popularity with the so-called smart mobile phones, but also sprinted ahead in deciphering every idea, every content that comes to mind. In addition to quick readability and the ability to include text, video and audio, it has also become preferable due to its higher storage capacity compared to standard barcodes. It is a candidate to becoming a long-term standard with applications of product tracking, product identification, time tracking, document management and general marketing.
Alluring pages on mobile phones with the QR code QR kodları sadece web sitesine yönlendirilmekle The QR codes were used to only redirect to the website, and the appeal of instantly opening new pages on mobile phones was not noticed 34 Turkish British Magazine I January - February 2020
at first. However, the manageability of instant data and content input opens up exciting horizons by transforming content stored in dynamic QR codes into instant interaction. For example, if you’re in Kahve Dünyası and you wonder if a dessert contains an allergen, this would be addressed by scanning the QR code, making all ingredient information widely accessible and of course easily read by enlarging it as much as you want from your mobile screen. Most producers have refrained from disclosing these vital ingredients so far or pushed them behind labels and barcodes that look like static ants, not because this information could not have been streamed, but because infinite transparency is deemed to be a dangerous thing. This time, the QR has gained momentum through the consumer demand for access to knowledge, and suppliers are faced with calls for wider presentations in this era of transparency. From now on, the path will be shaped by the balance established by entrepreneurs who demonstrate the ability to share information and critical content.
QR code usage is most common in Asian countries Thanks to the users in Asian countries who are more eager for the blessings of the digital world, QR codes are widely available in Asian countries. After the UK, QR usage is also becoming widespread on the European continent. Open air billboards, banners, even images which can be shared on mobile phones with QR scanning, e-commerce, products and services, information and content themes offer many possibilities. In the latest version, Apple devices allow you to scan and recognize QR codes up to 10 meters without any installation. Android-based phones also speed up this trend with automatic QR code scanning systems.
With QR, the shop windows gain instant colour QR codes move the user into areas of content and service, allowing them to shift to new service tranches. Famously put, ‘One thing after another’, the QR ignites like the tip of a fuse, triggering new contents full of surprises. For example, if you’re window shopping, by scanning a QR code in the window, the window lights flash, and mannequins start to model for you the dress you like. All of a sudden, that shop window becomes an amusement park. If your payment system is available on your phone, you can put in an order at that time and leave. Obviously, the information and order details of that brand on your mobile device may have already established the relation-
/ TECHNOLOGY
ship that will make you a long-term customer. Because the effect-response initiated by the QR scan offers the potential to both entertain the user and allow them to want to go through the doors that are opened in front of them. It does not render the user a passive participant with a one-sided sales purchase relationship; the user can take part more actively in this process to some extent through interaction. You can also scan an image of the QR code to retrieve contact information, connect to a wireless network, or open a webpage in the phone’s browser. The act of connecting from these physical world objects is called ‘hardlinking’ or ‘object hyperlinking’. QR codes can also be linked to a location to track where a code is scanned. Either the application that scans the QR code receives geographic information using GPS and cell tower triangulation (aGPS), or the URL encoded in the QR code is associated with a location.

Renewable energy platform GREEN NEWS As part of the energy transformation in the world, many countries aim to obtain 100% of their electricity from renewable sources such as solar, wind, hydroelectric and biofuels.
Erkan Kızılocak yesilhaber.net Editor-in-Chief erkankizilocak4@gmail.com
I
am both excited and happy to join the TurkishBritish family with this first post. From now on, I will meet you in this corner and I will try to inform you of developments and news concerning the two countries, in particular in the field of energy. I want to tell you a little bit about my own brand in this first article. As a renewable energy platform, yesilhaber.net is a news portal that publishes news, comments, analysis and data on the renewable energy sector. In doing so, we make sure to be precise, objective and inclusive.. In the scope of the energy transformation in the world, many countries aim to obtain 100% of their electricity from renewable sources such as solar, wind, hydroelectric and biofuels by 2050. Technological advances in energy storage and the fact that the costs of producing renewable energy can compete with fossil fuels and be even cheaper make the goal of 100% renewable energy realistic.
36 Turkish British Magazine I January - February 2020
According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), if the 2050’s targets are met, the total number of jobs created in renewable energy and related sectors will exceed 40 million people and contribute $ 52 trillion to global GDP total. Even the oil-rich Gulf countries are on the verge of diversifying their energy production, IRENA predicts that by 2030, the region will reach 72 GW of renewable energy capacity. When all these developments are put together, we can see where they will lead us. Yesilhaber.net will now include more news and developments related to the UK energy sector. It will support the efforts of companies and business organizations in the two countries, particularly in the field of renewable energy. I believe our cooperation and information sharing with TurkishBritish magazine will work in that sense.
A new global energy hub: the London Energy Club Mehmet Ögütçü is a name that has not gone unnoticed in the energy sector. This is not only valid in Turkey, but also in Europe, China and even in all the major energy and financial centers of the world. Mehmet is the president of Bosphorus Energy Club (BEC) which was created at the end of 2013 in Istanbul to operate in the field of regional and global power relations. Known for his diplomatic experience in energy circles, Mehmet Öğütçü is an energy authority who has held positions of responsibility in international institutions such as the International Energy Agency (IEA), the OECD, BG Group and Energy Charter. Building on the success of the Bosphorus Energy Club in Istanbul, Mehmet Öğütçü, based in London for many years and exercising numerous international functions, is extending this project to other energy centers around the world. The London Energy Club (LEC) was the first step in this project. We can define the London Energy Club (LEC) as the meeting point for members of the world government and representatives of companies in the energy field. Without a doubt, London’s unique geographic location and expertise in this area allow this. As the world’s largest energy center, where important decisions in the financial and geopolitical fields are taken, London responds to the need for an efficient and dedicated platform where stakeholders and key players can share their knowledge, experience and their ideas. These

actors have common concerns about the current and future dynamics that affect political choices and government decisions. This need has become urgent worldwide, especially at a time when the energy sector is facing extraordinary opportunities and challenges.
The Bosphorus Energy Club, a success based story The London Energy Club is based on the success of the Istanbul-based Bosphorus Energy Club, a regional energy Davos. There is an organic and natural relationship between the two clubs. Thanks to its profile of high-level members, LEC meets the need for keynote speakers at many interactive events organized each year in Istanbul. In addition, temporary round tables and conferences with wider participation are organized at the request of members. The top of the discussion and key messages are analyzed and distributed to members. LEC, chaired by Mehmet Öğütçü; Alastair Watson and Fiona Watson are directors. With a strong advisory board, LEC is able to provide a global network and strategic information. LEC members are executives on the boards of energy companies in Europe, the United States, Japan, Eurasia, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America. In addition, people from the banking,
diplomatic, accounting, legal and advisory sectors can be invited as members and special guests. The London Energy Club is a self-funded organization with membership fees and sponsorships and manages its activities securely according to the Chatham House rule. Among the main objectives; energy companies around the world have comfortable and secure relationships with each other and with government officials. It also allows global stakeholders to dialogue on cross-border projects, and shares their ideas and views on critical issues affecting their members. It informs decision-makers in the energy and finance sector through informal channels on critical developments, and helps them to act proactively and develop strategic plans. www.yesilhaber.net

Succeed in the UK with Cultural Know-How In Britain people are far less hierarchical than in Turkey and often have a greater level of responsibility and autonomy than you might expect. British people won’t share much of their private lives with you, so how do you get to know them? Culturel Chemistry gives tips about these.
And how do you build a relationship with someone? It’s worth remembering too that people develop business relationships in different ways. In ‘Anglo’ countries, good relationships follow on from the delivery of good service. In many Arab and Asian countries, however, a good relationship has to be established before you can be trusted with any of their business. And business is not always done around the meeting table, but often around the dining table, where knowledge of dining etiquette can make or break your relationship. In Turkey lots of business is done over a lunch or dinner table, but in Britain this is far less common.

ing a solution which is culturally appropriate. Having a diverse perspective on things enables you to offer a greater array of solutions to a wider audience. As suppliers we often come up with a solution that would work for us, but what if your clients’ world is different to yours? I tell a story in my book, Cultural Chemistry, of a culturally inappropriate solution, devised by an American PR guru who thought he could get some great publicity for his client by giving free ice-cream to the children’s hospital. The trouble was, while in America that might have been a nice good-news story, in China it’s considered very unhealthy to give cold food to sick children, so his client would not have got the kind of publicity he wanted at all. Finally, you may be wanting to hire some staff in the UK – how do you motivate them to ‘go the extra mile’ for you? There is a Persian proverb that states “If you are leading and nobody is following, you are just taking a walk” and this is exactly what is happening in offices all over the world. Cultural differences mean different expectations of how a boss behaves, how employees should be motivated and rewarded, how many hours must be spent at the office every day and even who pays for the cakes when it’s YOUR birthday! Going about things the ’wrong way’ will only be tolerated for so long, before tempers fray. Can you imagine turning up to work every day and recognising that your ‘local hires’ weren’t delivering the results you hoped for and didn’t seem particularly motivated by your personal management style either – even though it worked perfectly for you in Turkey? As you can see, there are many ways in which cultural differences can cause your UK sales agenda to go off the rails, but equally many ways in which developing your cultural intelligence and taking some time to learn about British culture will help to fast track your success here. It’s not unlike starting to play a new sport; you may already be fit and have great ball skills, but if you try to play football using the rules of tennis, you won’t be in the game for very long. It is about Signal versus Noise What goes on in the brain when we ignore or pay attention to a message?
alongside the background music. Just by shifting your attention - as effortless as redirecting your gaze - you can focus either on the conversation or the music. Your brain does the heavy lifting and automatically zeros in on the signal you want to focus. (Detail for the curious: In this context the “you” is the Prefrontal cortex, and the “brain” is well, the rest of the brain, mainly the areas that do audio processing: thalamus and the temporal lobes.) Basically, you give the brain a description of what you want it to focus on, and it does the rest: Pay attention to signals that fit the description; ignore those that don’t.

This makes sense as we have the biggest brains relative to our body size - and hearing is more about the brain (same with vision) than the ears. Understanding music is not one single thing. It is a combination of understanding rhythm, pitch, timbre, texture, volume and form simultaneously. Some birds are great at understanding rhythm, some bonobos are great at understanding pitch but humans are the ones who got it all. So “getting music” is an active and cognitively intense process for the brain. Distilled to its very essence, what brain does is; differentiate the signal from the noise. Imagine you are sitting at a cafe sipping your almond milk latte or that you are at your favourite co-working space, hearing the noise of the people discussing the best e-mail marketing growth hack
When it comes to your inbox (your mailbox, linkedin messages, whatsapp, messenger etc.), the situation is almost exactly the same. There are more messages than you could ever read through paying 100% attention, let alone answer. So what do you do? You compromise. You skim through and ignore… We naturally choose to pay more attention to messages that are important to us, for the cost of ignoring the rest that don’t seem as promising. But how does this exactly happen? It is just like deciding to hear or ignore the music: We give our brain a vague and fuzzy description of the types of messages we would potentially be interested in and let it do what it does best. Focus on the signals. Recognise the patterns. Ignore the noise. Should I answer?
4 Message from the CEO of a large company? Most likely, yes.
4Message from a good friend? Yes. 4Message from a lucrative client? Yes. 4Message from a someone offering SEO service? Most likely, no.
4Message from someone looking for a job? Most likely, no and so on… Here is the critical bit. In most cases, the brain works in autopilot to find the matching patterns, ignoring the rest. It wakes you only when you need to make a decision. The brain seeks a signal - a pattern. So that signal is really important and worth consciously thinking about. It is very much like a brief you give to a marketing or recruitment agency. Give the wrong one, and you got to a very bad start. What is your brief to your brain? 42 Turkish British Magazine I January - February 2020
/ CAREER SCHOOL
Different People Looking for Different Things There are different personas and what each will respond to or ignore will differ. Each gave different briefs to their brains on what to look for. Depending on if‌ 4 You are a recruiter looking for a talent for a specific role. 4 You are a hiring manager not actively looking to hire, but open to meeting with people that have a great potential. 4 You are an investor looking for the next promising investment. 4 You are a startup founder looking for key people to grow your business. 4 You are an entrepreneur looking for people to co-operate in a project. 4 You are a freelancer looking for the next gig. 4 You are a consultant looking for a new client.
4 You are a salesperson looking for a new lead. All of these people will respond to or ignore different type of messages that hit their inbox. This automatic sifting process is a function of their own brief to their brain about what is worth their time. If you look closely, you will notice something
strangely remarkable. While some people are looking for something really specific, others are looking for something that is harder to specify. How does this difference play out?
Those Who Ignore The Most, Aren’t The Busiest. Who then, ignores the most messages? Those who think they have a very clear idea of what they are looking for. Think back to your own experience, does this make sense? It aligns well with mine. For example, a recruiter or a VC will most likely not read or reply, if the message does not signal it is a great candidate for hiring or investing. On the other hand, an entrepreneur is more likely to read and reply a message that comes from someone with an interesting background or expertise even though the direct benefit might not be so apparent. You might be a recruiter who is ignoring someone who can recommend the best candidate for the role because their profile does not exactly fit your idea of the ideal profile. You might be a founder ignoring any service proposal that comes your way, but might actually be missing out on a solution that can help your business.
Conclusion(s) 4Key conclusion #1 Ignoring a message is a function of how precise people think what they are looking for is (rather than just a result of how busy they are). 4Key conclusion #2 When you think you know what is it that you are exactly looking for, you may miss out on what you might need the most. Thinking "I know exactly what I am looking for" is the same as "I know everything I need to know". The reality is, we don't. Especially in bigger cities with more diverse cultural backgrounds, it is hard to tell who knows what-or how good they are. 4Key conclusion #3 It is wise to be very careful of the brief that you feed to your brain on what you should pay attention to and what you should ignore. If the net you are casting is too narrow, you might be ignoring some messages that you'll regret. The wider the net you
cast is, the more chance you have to actually meet more interesting people. The downside is that it is less automatic and more cognitively tasking. 4Key conclusion #4 Challenge yourself to change the clues you look at: Focus more on the why and less on the who and what. Especially when we receive a coldmessage we instinctively look at how personal the message is, who is sending it and what it's about. It is only natural. We ask ourselves, Am I part of a huge lead generation campaign, or is there an actual person writing a message to me? And the triggers we pay attention to serve us well. If that person sending the message knows someone we do, or if the message is personal, that is good news. But are these actually the best filters to sort out real opportunities from spam? I don't think so.
This is a problem: We look at who sent the message and what they are talking about more than the why. Our pattern recognising brain can only do so much, without involving higher brain functions involved with decision making. This might be the solution: Try asking Why is this person sending this message? more often to get to the heart of intent. Use your decision making capacities more rather than automatic filtering. Cooperation and collaboration are at the core of the creative spirit. When you establish intent, it is easier to sniff out the givers from the takers. It might take more time and energy but do try to cast a wider net. Accept that, just as you don't know everything, you don't know exactly who you should ignore. Love the fuzzy and uncertain nature of these messages you receive, because they are very human in every way.

The elderly people prefer to be cared at home, not at a nursing facility or hospice Lily Mae Home Care, the only Turkish company in the UK that provides home care for the elderly, makes the lives of the elderly easier with its many services, such as assisting with bathing to cooking, shopping, to monitoring medication.
T
he proportion of the elderly people in the UK population is increasing with each passing year; the population is rapidly aging. However, with the aging of the population, the elderly, who have difficulty meeting their physical needs as they get older, and who cannot live without support, need care. Lily Mae Home Care, founded by Alkan Özkan and Sarah Tyrrell who have gained many years of experience in healthcare and care services, offers services that will make life easier for the elderly in this process. Lily Mae Home Care Owner and General Manager Alkan Ozkan, who came to the

UK in 2006 and has been working in the field of home care services since 2010, said, “We offer care to elderly people in their own homes. Because the elderly here do not want to go to nursing facilities and want to live freely in their own homes,” he says.
The only Turkish company providing home care services Lily Mae Home Care, the only Turkish company in the UK that provides home care in 2016, currently employs about 30 provides services to 50-55 people. Explaining that the majority of their employees are people coming from the NHS, Ozkan said, “There are people for whom we provide 24-hour care or people who only receive one hour of care each day. We offer services tailored to people’s needs.” Personal Care, 24/7 on-demand call service, daily checks, palliative care, medication management, daily life support, food preparation, social activities, etc. are only part of the services given by Lily Mae. “Under what we call personal care, the services include assisting with showers or baths, ablutions, administering their medication, cooking, and for some, cleaning; shopping, changing medicines when

they need assistance,” says Alkan Özkan. The majority of the patients that Lily Mae Home Care provides care for come through the tenders made by NHS, said Alkan Ozkan, “Our patients come through social services tenders or through our private customers. ‘ End of life care’ i.e. people who are in the last stages of their life with incurable illnesses are also trusted to us, through special procedures, “he said.
Lily Mae’s services are at international standards Sarah Tyrrell, Operations Director of Lily Mae Home Care, said that in the UK health and social care services are supervised by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the independent regulator of health and social care, and that all services at Lily Mae are offered in accordance with the standards. it attracts attention. She stated that CQC monitors the services in 5 main areas, i.e. safe, effective, caring, responsive, well-led. Lily Mae meets all these criteria.
We are open to cooperation in health tourism Ozkan, who says that the patients they provide home care for, wish to take a holiday from time to time, states that they may be interested in health tourism because of both the holiday resorts and alternative treatment residences. “Many of our customers want to go on vacation, but they don’t have a place to go for a holiday. Turkey, for example, is paradise. You go to Akcay, Mount Ida, there’s plenty of oxygen. Lung disease called COPD is very prevalent in England and the best treatment for it is plenty of clean oxygen which can be found in Mount Ida. Also, thermal spas are ideal for people with rheumatism. There’s no reason why people shouldn’t go there, because they know all of this, already. As Lilly Mae, we are open to collaborating on this area.”
Franchise Partnership Model in Home Care Noting that Lilly Mae has become a very respected company in a short time, Alkan Özkan continues: “We have a good report from the CQC. Looking at our financial performance, our annual turnover is close to a million. We’re doing pretty well with our current situation.” On a successful path, Lilly Mae’s recent home care franchising model will be expanding its service area. Alkan Ozkan explains the model: “We educate franchisees for a year, under what we call mentoring, and aim to get back the principal amount people invested along with some profit. We offer people a franchise partnership model. We teach the business to those who want to build a partnership model. The important thing is to gain some experience and get them to transfer this experience into their work. Home Care is a business that is much needed and has continuity. We also want to make sure that more Turks are involved.” With this model, Alkan also wishes to break the prejudice that believes ‘Every Turk in the UK will be a kebab shop owner or barber’: “Our people can work professionally anywhere in the UK”. www.tbmag.co.uk 45
CITY AND LIFE
A calming, relaxing, healing art: MARBLING (EBRU) For Marbling artist Özlem Yüksel, the art of Marbling is the best way to understand life, to capture calmness and find healing in this complex life. The patterns that are shaped with certain touches, but still find their own way, are like the life itself...
M
arbling artist Özlem Yüksel, who is becoming more and more passionate about the art of Marbling as she continues do it, now participates in exhibitions in London, and organises workshops for children and adults. She talks about Marbling, which isn’t very well known abroad, at every opportunity. Belenart’s founder, Özlem Yüksel, takes her love of Marbling virtually everywhere she goes, as a volunteer ambassador. Yüksel is a University of Bogazici Computer Engineering graduate. who worked as a manager in companies such as Procter & Gamble, J&J and Panasonic, after completing her Masters degree in business administration. She moved to Italy, quitting her 14 years of professional career. Yüksel, who was interested in many branches of fine arts as hobbies, while in Italy, encountered the art of Marbling
46 Turkish British Magazine I January - February 2020
/ AFTERNOON TEA
in 2001. As her skills and mastery of the art of marbling increased, she began to participate in exhibitions. Since 2002, Yüksel had hundreds of uniquely created invitations, in preparation for the circumcision ceremony of her son, and the 20th anniversary of her marriage. During this period, Yüksel had a shift and Marbling has become more than a mere hobby and she began to participate in exhibitions. In 2016, she moved to Dubai and lived there for 1.5 years. Yüksel then moved to England, where she stayed the longest, due to her husband’s job. She says “The opportunities that London offers in many fields of art and culture make it possible to work on many different subjects comfortably”.
Marbling is an extraordinary free form Özlem Yüksel’s journey with the art of Marbling, which she is now a master of, continues. Expressing the view that art is an area where new doors are constantly opened and creativity brings change, Yüksel says “I can talk about reaching to a level of specific mastery in terms of techniques. As for the works, every day takes me to a different level”. Yüksel, who draws attention to the parallel of the art of Marbling, which she loves passionately, with life, continues to explain the similarities with her own unique descriptions: This freedom applies both to you and Marbling itself. While you express yourself in many colours, shapes and tools, each picture reacts to the tragacanth, temperature and paints that you prepare. In a sense, you and all the ingredients of Marbling are shaping the actual work together. Since we act calmly with gentle movements, it is a calming, relaxing, healing art. When you do this with your sensations, it is possible to see the reflection of life in Marbling. The tragacanths and paints that you prepare also express your preparation for life, and your design plans in your mind. You are first faced with an empty water surface, just like life. You start with a design like the plans in your life. Your dream is realised by knowing yourself, your competences, your wishes. You shape it with a lot of different colours and patterns, using a lot of different tools. Unlike other painting arts, tragacanth and paints express their own reactions. So just like life, you need to choose the right material, and prepare well to realise your design, your dream. Sometimes the pattern spreads out more than you expect. You give it a different format with another touch. Isn’t life is just the same? When things are different than you expect, it needs different answers. Your mistakes make you
wiser, more competent in dealing with problems. The choice of paint and pattern determines the beauty of the picture, just like our choices in life. Sometimes drops of paint fall into the surface of the water, like the things that happened to you in life. You shape it and make it part of the picture, just like we do in life. So when I think of Marbling, I think of Halil Cibran’s verse of “A drop of water has all the secrets of the oceans”.
You can see children’s interest after 10 minutes Yüksel holds workshops with those who want to learn Marbling and benefit from the beautiful things it offers. She sometimes introduces Marbling to children and young people in schools she receives invitations from. She even organises unusual and beautiful birthday parties, where children can use their creativity and enjoy themselves. Yüksel says “Marbling is very useful for children in order to express themselves, but at the same time it is an enjoyable and entertainwww.tbmag.co.uk 47

ing art for them” and continues to say: “I don’t limit myself to Marbling and continue painting and engage in other art forms as I am inclined towards painting and handicrafts. In fact, creativity doesn’t allow for limitations in your materials and techniques when you are engaged with art”. Yüksel’s work in schools is a separate source of happiness. She is like a volunteer ambassador... Yüksel, who says that she lovingly shares her knowledge, continues to say: “I go to all the schools I am invited to. I very much enjoy watching their astonishment and feelings, as if they were doing magic, when I am teaching Marbling to children. I’m sure that the energy in that given moment, in that environment, is very useful for our bodies and minds. When I am teaching children, the time is never enough, especially for some children. Believe me, children’s ability, and interest, all become apparent in just five, ten minutes. Perhaps this intuition comes with age and experience”. Yüksel has held workshops with hundreds of children and teachers in many schools outside London, as well as in Istanbul, Bursa and Dubai.

Özlem Yüksel’s works in different parts of London In addition to workshops, Yüksel also carries out alternative initiatives for the recognition of the art of Marbling. Yüksel, who had a stall at One New Change Mall, next to St Paul’s Cathedral for 1.5 years and promoted the art of marbling. Despite not having been able to find the time in recent years to do the same, she will reopen her stand on December 11 and 12. Turning the busy New Year period into an opportunity to introduce Marbling, Yüksel occasionally participates in activities organised by art workshops and Turkish groups. Yüksel, who is also interested in various branches of art besides Marbling, has different works on display at the Mirerart Winter Exhibition until 22 December. Yüksel said “Since the general concept here is fine art, I joined with fine art works created with acrylic paints, not with a traditional art like Marbling. This style is different than my other works. My colours of this period were black and white, representing duality. I also used red to add colour to the balance in duality”.

versity for England, Europe and the Middle East, is an important teacher who has inspired more than 100,000 people, trained tens of thousands of people so far. She is the founding president of Nevsah Institute, which has been operating for 18 years and has offices in New York, London and Istanbul. The Nevsah Institute syllabus includes dozens of different trainings so that people can achieve to their full capacity and live extraordinary lives. Nevşah Fidan Karamehmet’s saying “I have a clear vision” aims an academy that will serve humanity and new generations and a university establishment project in London.
“We will raise masters” The aim of the faculty will be established in London is to train masters who will serve humanity for the next 500 years. “Nevşah F. Karamehmet stated that all the certificate programs and trainings that will be carried out in Nevsah Institute will be included within the scope of the academy and university, which will be a school of wisdom, that everyone will contact with their highest consciousness and will both experience their own awakening and trigger the awakening of millions of people. A school, where real masters will come out, states that it will have the capacity to change the consciousness of the whole world.
/ LIFE
Describing the 21st century as a period in which people are in contact with their highest capacity, in a way godlike, and in the way of realizing ones highest posibilities, Karamehmet said, “At the moment, many people in the world want to reach the highest level of their capacity, realize their full potential, find the purpose of life and serve humanity with important projects. In order for this to happen, a school embellished with genuine teachings and genuine teachers are needed. Nevsah Institute is this school. Our goal is for every individual participating in our school and education to experience the maximum capacity and have an extraordinary life experience. This is possible and we have all the tools to make it possible. Our only goal now is to bring our school and syllabus to larger masses. For this to happen, we need to train masters, genuine teachers and masters.”
“We are still healing after the war” Karamehmet“ 21. century is a period when the majority broke off from their truth, essence, true identity, purpose of life, live with dogmas, patterns, and therefore a great spiritual search began. It is for this reason that diseases, stress, violence and fears increase. The people who are not aligned with their self-existence and who do not live in accordance with their eigenvalues are either getting sick or getting angry, getting aggressive,”and explains the period we are in with these words: “I have worked with 29943 people so far, most demanded Miracle Course training has been organized in 38 different cities in the world for 18 years, carrying my signature, which 12043 people attended. I have not seen that even a single person living according to his eigenvalues In connection with his/her own being, can stay sick, nervous, aggressive and combative. Behind all the problems we have in life is lying “not being ourselves”. Nevsah Institute is exactly there to solve this problem of humanity. We are a generation out of war. The war years are not very old. With the effect of the war, humanity has been detached from itself and its essence. We come from the times when many people struggle to spend time with their own truth, not that the collapsed systems have to be rebuilt. Therefore, our genes still have protection, defense, panic and fear, and these emotions prevent us from being ourselves. Everyone Needs Healing. The period is such a period. Nevsah Institute syllabus is a school that supports our students in their journey to become themselves freely and enables them to reach their peak capacity.
Once one connects with the eternity of the essence of ones being, the endless existence, the existence itself, his/her full and infinite potential, his/her life can never be the same again. Because everything changes completely, everything materially and spiritually multiplies a hundred times.”
“We work with consciousness in Nevsah Institute” “Few people can go beyond the visible world reality and connect with truth, but when they did their lives will change forever ”. Karamehmet, defines the truth as the reality we experience living in this world, beyond its three dimension. Referring to Yunus Emre’s saying “I have a me inside”, Karamehmet says; It is a blessing reaching to the one beyond the object, beyond the one which is mortal but there are very few people who can achieve it. Karamehmet says that with the studies, the emotional and mental polarity created by a persons own mind has been removed from there and the meaning he/she has put into life is eliminates and adds: “With the work we do, the person becomes conscious and awakened. It is necessary to work with the breath and the way of thinking because the removal of polarity within consciousness and the functionality in breath, in fact, is the same thing. That’s why we work hard with consciousness as well while working with breath. Each training in our syllabus is the continuation and complementary of another. The spiritual journeys of the people are also completes who have finished it all.”
Stay with yourself 20 minutes in the morning and evening! Emphasizing that people will value their own existence more in the coming periods as life is accelerating, Karamehmet continues: “Meditation has an important role in the Nev-

CITY AND LIFE you don’t brush your teeth, your teeth rot, and when we don’t meditate regularly, the brain goes. New generations will realize this and will remain alone with themselves more often. Thus, I see that healthier consciousnesses and brains will grow. Currently, meditation in the world is most common in Los Angeles and Silicon Valley. Where technology is the most intense. This shows also how high the consciousness is here, ”she says.

sah Institute syllabus. In the future, people will understand the importance of this more. I care very much about one staying with oneself. It’s called meditation, but we don’t have to say meditation. We can say a human just staying alone with him/herself without doing anything. Morning and evening sitting without doing anything. Without interfering with thoughts, feelings; sitting without trying to change any of your moods. Actually, self-confrontation. In such a fast world, if a person does not have a minimum of 20 minutes of confrontation with him/herself during the day he/she can lose physical health, mental health, get upside down emotionally. World is living with this now.
“Meditation will be like, brushing teeth” Nevşah Karamehmet said, “Every person needs time to be alone with himself or herself,” Nevşah Karamehmet said. She points out thats why meditation is spreading at an incredible speed all over the world. Karamehmet believes that meditation will be like brushing teeth in the future . When
Karamehmet stated that the negative thoughts and unenlightened consciousness that are not corrected in the human mind are also reflected negatively on the lives of people, and that the most determining factor in getting support is the person’s own life. Karamehmet continues to explain the effects of problems in the unenlightened mind on life: “It has been said for centuries, but I would like to say once again, the world is the mirror of consciousness. However our mindset is our life is its reflection.”
Your Life is a reflection of your thinking structure and mind. Therefore, by looking at his/her life, he/she can understand whether there is a problem in his consciousness, whether he/she needs healing or enlightenment. The problems in our life are the signes of our wrong choice in conciousness. So that means; An enlightened consciousness progresses in all areas of life. Metarially and spiritually. Many people now think that ‘enlightenment’ is realizing that the world is an illusion and going beyond it, so that they do not need to give importance to what is happening in the world. On the contrary, if you have really gone beyond the world and the world has lost its meaning, you will take control of it and make it do whatever you want. You cannot have any material or spiritual problems.
If consciousness is awakened, life on earth, turns into paradise. The more problems a person has in his life, for example; The more she/he cannot progress in each of the 7-8 areas of life, the more problem she/ he has in his/her mind. If She/he is progressing materially and spiritually, it means that his/her consciousness is also progressing. Every person should look at their physical body, how healthy they are, how rich they are, social life, relationships, family, living environment, how much they want...” 52 Turkish British Magazine I January - February 2020

CITY AND LIFE
Street food spots in London We’ve explored the street food markets in London, which are encountered in almost every corner of the city, offering different tastes from world cuisine and have an important place in the culture of food and beverage. Ebru Atlan TecirlioÄ&#x;lu / @ebruatlan
L
ondon is one of the richest and unrivalled cities in the world, in terms of its food and beverage scene. This city, where you can find restaurants from almost every cuisine of the world, has a dreamlike variety that induces the excitement of food and drink enthusiasts. Even though the iconic pubs and Michelin-starred restaurants are important parts of the food and beverage scene, street food markets which have become a part of the city’s identity over time, have a different and special place for Londoners. Most of the street food stands that you may encounter in almost every neighbourhood, provide a high standard of gastronomical experience with all their food offerings. Such a treasure for a foodie, in these markets there is an unlimited variety, from vegan dishes to Caribbean cuisine, to Philippine gourmet burgers and 3rd generation coffee makers and bakers. You can come across these markets, where you can experience different street food, espe-

cially at weekends, in many corners of the city. It is not easy to choose between different stands, while scrumptious scents fly through the air. Many stands allow you to taste the food they offer with small tasters, easily stealing your heart. Although, all the markets spread all over the city during the weekends, it is also possible to find nice alternative markets where you can eat, drink and explore on weekdays. Street food culture in England has become increasingly popular, especially since the end of the 90s. Small operators, who suffered from the rapidly expanding restaurant and fast food chains, looking for lower-cost and low-risk business solutions have played a particular role in this trend to rise. The lack of mandatory legal barriers for selling food on the street has also made it easier for small entrepreneurs. A new opportunity has emerged on the streets for those who want to demonstrate their talents in cooking. In this way, the streets began to become the scene of flavour games of chefs from different cultures.

1. Borough Market There are dozens of street food markets throughout London, but the most famous of these is Borough Market. This market, which goes back 1000 years, deserves this reputation. Near London Bridge, the market hosts more than 70 stands with different international cuisines. It’s one of the best locations in the city to buy gourmet products such as fish, meat, deli products, cheese, olives, olive oil, handmade chocolate, and sourdough bread. Many stands offer free tasters for guests. This makes it a little easier to choose what you want to eat. The busiest day of the market, which is open between Monday and Saturday, is Saturday, when it hosts the highest number of stands. Go as early as possible to avoid crowds and don’t forget to discover the nearby traditional British pubs and walk along the river. • Monday - Thursday: 10.00-17.00 • Friday: 10:00 - 18:00 • Saturday: 8.00-17.00 • Borough Market is closed on Sundays. • 8 Southwark St, London SE1 1TL • boroughmarket.org.uk

2. Kerb Market Petra Barran, a street food vendor, is the person behind the idea of the Kerb street food market, which opens in 5 different boroughs of London on different days of the week. Petra Barran started her journey by converting an old ice cream truck she bought on eBay into a tiny kiosk, to sell her own chocolates and desserts. She discovered that street food is a rapidly rising trend while visiting markets and festivals in different cities in the UK, in 2010. She met a few other street food vendors who had similar experiences in London, offering fine-dining restaurant taste and quality food on the streets of London. The idea of bringing all of these vendors together in the same market came to her mind and subsequently the Kerb was born in 2012. Today, you can taste dishes from Filipino cuisine to Indian food, gnocchi and chicken wings made by the skilled chefs of Kerb at King’s Cross, where the market first appeared and various other boroughs of London. They also have workshops for those who are thinking about selling food on the street and want to invest in this business. • King’s Cross - Granary SQ, N1C • Wednesday-Friday: 12:00 to 14:00 • Paddington - Sheldon Square, Paddington Central, W2 • Every 2 weeks on Wednesdays: 12.0014.00 • Gherkin – 30 St Mary Axe, EC3A • Thursday: 12.00-14.00 • St. Kats - St. Katharine Docks, London, E1W 1LA • Friday: 12.00-14.00 • West India Quay – West India Quay, E14 • Tuesday to Friday: 11.30-14.00 • www.kerbfood.com

The history of stone houses, which have become the symbol of the town, is quite old. These houses, which were built in 1380 as a wool warehouse, were turned into the houses where weavers lived in the 17th century. The village, located in River Coln, a mountainous region in the west of England, with honey-roofed houses built in the 17th century, has an impressive architecture. With its Mary Church and trout farm, which has been functioning since 1902, it is one of the places that tourists coming to the region should absolutely visit. Another village you should absolutely visit is Bourton-on-the-Water ... It is located in a small valley between the hills of Cotswolds. The area surrounding Bourton is a walking paradise with many paths crossing the countryside.
Exotic Birds The nearby Salmonsbury Meadows is a nature reserve where you can enjoy strolling through natural meadows and wildflowers. Especially in the region visited by families, there are areas to attract visitors of all ages. When you go to Salmonsbury Meadows, be sure to visit ‘Birdland Park and Gardens’, which hosts a wide range of exotic birds such as penguins, flamingos, macaws, emus and game birds.Don’t leave without visiting the Miniature Museum, a 1/9 copy of the village center, and the seven unique galleries that include the vintage car collection within the
Automobile Museum, the fascinating toy collection and the favorite children’s little car ‘Brum’ .

Mickleton Village, a village you can visit during your Cotswolds trip, surprises those who come with its magnificent view. Many of the traditional black and white cottages have roofs made of reeds that harmonize with the region’s interesting country style. Mickleton Village, famous for its fertile land and vegetable growing, welcomes all visitors warmly.
