From the Editor We are going to be the voice of Turkish business people… Dear readers, We are glad to meet you on these fine sunny days, especially after a long and harsh winter. The Turkish community in the UK is not only successful at cultural integration, but also plays a very important role in the business world. We set out to better promote this dynamic community and to build an economic bridge between Turkey and the UK These are the reasons why we put all our enthusiasm and effort into making this first issue of our magazine. Why do we publish? “Turkish British” will keep you up to date with business news and tell the success (and sometimes failure) stories of entrepreneurs in this country. The Turkish - speaking community in the UK, is now more than 400.000 strong, is not only. We can confidently say that especially in the last 10 years, a lot of entrepreneurs specialising in a variety of jobs have settled here via the Ankara Agreement or entrepreneur visa. We, as the publishers of Turkish British magazine, came to the UK as entrepreneurs as well. Therefore, we would like to share our ideas, experience and know-how on how to create economic value in this country. Brexit will affect Turkish business people as well Dispute and uncertainty over Brexit has affected the economic activities in the UK and will have both positive and negative effects on Turkish companies and entrepreneurs. Most important of which will be the annulment of ECAA Ankara Agreement. It’s been in effect since 1964 and it is a quite in-demand visa category. However, we believe that creating effective networks between Turkish and British business people would, at least, minimise the negative impacts of Brexit. As “Turkish British”, our aim is to help the Turkish speaking community, non-profit organisations and business people create new networks and support their promotional activities. Our another goal is to solidify the economic bridge between Turkey and the UK, thereby creating new markets for the business people in both countries. “Turkish British” will be published on a one-month-Turkish, onemonth-English basis, making in total 6 issues printed in Turkish and 6 issues in English annually. WELCOME

The New Business and Lifestyle Magazine of the Turkish-Speaking Community “ It is high time to initiate such a publication” said Fevzi Kemal Torun, the editorin-chief of “Turkish British” magazine. According to Torun, their aim is to make the Turkish speaking community in Britain more visible. “Turkish British” magazine is being published by Afis Communication, a company who’s been working in Turkey for a long time in the fields of corporate publishing and advertisement. Afis Communication opened their London office two years ago. The magazine’s audience is mainly the Turkish speaking community and the other communities that they have been integrated with. The editor-in-chief of “Turkish British” and the head of the agency Afis Communication, Fevzi Kemal Torun summarizes their goal as ““We want to share our community’s lives, who have made extraordinary efforts to integrate themselves to UK economically. We want to contribute to the economical and cultural relations between two communities.” Both digital and conventional media is very strong in UK, according to Torun. Other communities in UK are also publishing magazines and newspapers to reach their own fellow countrymen. Now, the Turkish speaking community is making significant contributions to British economy. “But, it is quite striking that our community has no media platform with which to express themselves. The Turkish speaking community needs a platform to share their success, a platform that is followed by both Turkish and English speaking communities. “And now, we decided to fill that void” says Torun. Torun specifically underlines that Turkish British magazine will be objective and fair to all communities and all points of view, and will continue publishing as an independent magazine.

Inter-communal Integration Must Continue in the Media as well The UK is one of the biggest economies in the world. It receives a massive amount of immigration and is one of 6

the most cosmopolitan countries of the world, according to Torun. Immigrants contribute socially and economically, with their entrepreneurship and investments, as they integrate themselves with the English and other communities in the UK.

One of the most active and the driven group among these communities is Turkish speaking community, according to Torun, as he explains why they decided to publish “Turkish British”: There are 400.000 Turkish speaking people in the UK has a population of almost 70 million. There is a community who made a place for themselves in the business world. Our people have been coming here for various reasons since 1970. In the last 10 years, a considerable


TurkishBritish number of entrepreneurs came to the UK’s under the Ankara Agreement and investor visas. Their investments and the companies they’ve built have made a great contribution to UK’s economy and they’ve made great strides in integrating with other communities. They make successful business connections and still continue to grow with newcomers. We think that this community needs a national media outlet. Integration must continue on media as well. The work we’ve done, the network we’ve built and the connections we made as Afiş İletişim, led us to believe that this is the right place and the right time to start publishing our magazine, a representation Turkish speaking community!

Turkish British will Serve as a Venue for International Entrepreneurship Turkish British’s aim is to build a bridge between entrepreneurs and companies of Turkey and the UK. The magazine contains articles about current topics, news of the economy, exclusive interviews from different industries, promotion of historical and touristic sites, health, education, news of cultural and artistic value, start up companies and food industry. Using our vast distribution network, the magazine will be delivered to recognized businesses and entities of both the UK and Turkey’s economies, free of charge. Turkish British will be available our magazine’s website and online magazine platforms online, and in print.

Coca-Cola Turkey wins Two Social Responsibility Awards in London Two of the Coca-Cola Turkey’s social responsibility projects “My Sister“ and “The Future of Agriculture“ has been deemed worthy of award. The International CSR Excellence Awards were presented to their laureates in a ceremony held in London. The event was held at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where worldrenowned actors such as Anthony Hopkins, John Hurt, Timothy Dalton and Joan Collins received their education. Coca-Cola Turkey’s “My Sister Project“ is aimed to advocate for women’s participation in social and economic life, while “The Future of Agriculture Project“, which is being run in Konya, Turkey, is concerned with the sustainable use of land and water in agricultural practices.u

Aytac acquired the British Organic Brand Goodness Foods

olding an important market in the UK food sector, Aytac Foods Limited has acquired the British organic brand Goodness Foods, which has been in business for nearly 36 years. By adding Goodness Foods to the Organic unit that Aytac established two years ago, earns them a place among the players of the giants league in the organic market. Goodness Foods, which has been operating in the UK since 2000, has brands that have a say in the halal food market that is growing daily in the world. The company is continues to grow in the United Kingdom with Manchester branch in Central and Northern UK, Scotland, Wales and Ireland as well as in London with slogan of “you are what you eat”, aims to grow in the natural and organic food market.

Established by Church and now Aytac’s Goodness Foods, known as a church organisation, had been privatized two years ago and passed to an investor company in partnership with Spanish and the Netherlands. The company that had entered into a crisis when in the private sector had to stop its service last year.Aytac Food Limited, which bought the company’s brand name rights and some products during this crisis, aims to grow in organic food with a brand known in the UK.

UK based Pladis was founded by Yıldız Holding as means of expanding their horizons beyond Turkey, and they are planning to go public in a couple of years. urkey’s well known restaurant chain Köşebaşı Restaurant added another branch to its list of branches abroad. Their latest establishment has just opened in London. eşe Jenkins, the CEO of Allytta Real Estate Investments has pointed out the increase in Turkish people’s attention to London in the recent years. According to Jenkins, the recent temporary drop in prices is considered as an opportunity by Turkish investors, who are on the look out for property acquisition opportunities. Jenkins especially emphasized the %297 growth in the numbers of Turkish investors who reached out Allytta Real Estate Investments for real estate acquisition. “We don’t know the exact number, but according to our research, around 85,000 Turkish people have bought houses in London in the past 5 years” Jenkins stated. High expectations are in the air for post-Brexit, according to Jenkins. “Brexit is expected to finalise one way or another in October 2019. There might be an increase in price in 2020 and later on. Right now is a really advantageous time for people who want to invest in real estate in London. Prices are expected to go up majorly in the coming 5 years” Jenkins told.u

The Home Office’s recent changes regarding obtaining indefinite leave to remain (ILR) or permanent residency via Turkish Businessperson visa (aka Ankara Agreement) aggravated the situation for thousands of Turkish people living in the UK. Ankara Agreement provides Turkish citizens with the rights to establish a business, work and reside in the UK. When the amendments made in the 15th of June 2018 began to be retrospectively implemented, the grievances have increased; and a legal process was initiated with the participation of thousands of volunteers. Although the outcome of the first case resulted in disappointment for the Turkish community, the legal struggle is not over yet. Non-practising barrister and solicitor Yaşar Doğan from Redstone Solicitors explains the amendments in question:

ince coming into effect in 1963, the Ankara Agreement has been a hope for those who have moved from Turkey to the UK. Thousands of Turkish citizens have made investments and started new lives in the UK by obtaining the Ankara Agreement visa. However, some changes have been made in the conditions of application and citizenship processes within the last year. Even worse for the Turkish citizens, those changes were also requested to be implemented retrospectively. The new regulation has created serious grievances for those who began benefiting from this visa type before 16 March 2018. The signatures have been collected for a petition campaign, and the amendments have been appealed and sued. Although the outcome of the first proceeding came as a disappointment for those who are at risk of losing their acquired right, it is not a lost cause yet. The appeal process is now underway. So, what are the demands of the Turkish citizens who have already moved to the UK to run a business? What will happen next? We ask the experts of the subject and the followers of this painful process…

“Turkish citizens who want to start a new business in the UK were normally able to apply for indefinite leave to remain after having 1 year and then 3 years of limited leave to remain. They could also bring their supposes and children. The Home Office has changed the rules and stipulated that the supposes must have lived in the UK for at least 2 years. This amendment has not been put into practice for a while. Once it suddenly began to be implemented, many people’s applications have been rejected. One of the people whose application was rejected is Hacer Aydoğdu. In collaboration with other complainant families, the Aydoğdu family has sued the Home Office. It was claimed that the amendment contradicts the articles of the Ankara Agreement. Among many other cases, Hacer Aydoğdu case was chosen as the leading one.”

The conditions of the Ankara Agreement changed by a sudden decision Hacer Aydoğdu has become the symbol of the legal struggle, which has been growingly continuing for nearly one year. Doğan highlights that despite not being relevant to the matter in dispute, the judge has ruled against the ILR rights of not only the spouses but also Turkish citizens. Doğan further points out that the family was unable to appeal against the decision due to financial difficulties. Following this decision, applications for ILR have also been suspended. After a while, applications were restarted without any changes. However, with a sudden decision taken on 16 March 2018, Ankara Agreement visa holders’ right of ILR has been suspended. Then, on the 16th of June 2018, a guideline was issued to revise the right of ILR. With the new regulations issued in this guideline,


TurkishBritish the duration of residence has been increased to 5 years, the language and culture test became compulsory, and an application fee of £2389 for each family member was put into practice. Additionally, it was announced that the amendments will be retrospectively applied to those who have already made applications before 16 March 2018 and run their business in the UK in accordance with this type of visa.

The matter in dispute...

Yaşar Doğan from Redstone Solicitors states: “This has created many grievances. The retrospective application of these amendments is evidently unjust.” He further explains the process happened thereafter as follows: “Turkish businessperson, led by Leni Candan, have formed the ‘Turkish Businessperson Association’. I have also voluntarily accepted to be a solicitor. We first sent a ‘letter before action’. As we were unable to get the result we wanted, we appealed to the High Court of Justice in UK. We claimed that the decision for the Aydoğdu family case is legally wrong and is inconsistent with the previous decisions of the European Court of Justice. The amendments also have contradicted the legitimate expectations of those benefiting from this specific visa. Our case took place on the 7th of March 2019 in the High Court. The judge postponed the decision due to the difficulties in the legal arguments of the case. On 18 March 2019, the High Court announced its decision.”

• Turkish business people who have made their applications for obtaining the Ankara Agreement visa before 16 March 2018 have a legitimate expectation that they will be granted ILR in the UK by being considered under the old articles of the agreement (ie obtaining ILR at the end of four years without being subjected to language and citizenship test and without having to pay an application fee).

“The retrospective implementation of amendments is unnecessary, unjust, and disproportionate” The High Court has ruled that the expectations held by the Ankara Agreement visa holders that they will not be affected by the amendments are legitimate; that the legitimate expectations have been violated by the Home Office; and that have caused legitimate grievances. However, it was also decided that the amendments are legitimate and balanced with the public interest. Solicitor Doğan asserts that the decision was disappointing. He also specifies that although the judge’s decision admitted that the recent amendments have caused legitimate grievance, it was decided that the grievances were not grave enough compared to the public interest. Doğan comments on the decision: “Had the amendments not affected the Turkish Businessperson visa holders already living in the UK, it could then have been possible to agree with the judge. Following the changes, new Turkish applicants would know the updated visa requirements. The retrospective implementation of the changes to those already living in here cannot be seen as proportionate and legitimate. The Home Office can, of course, change immigra-

• Home Office violated the above-mentioned legitimate expectation by making changes to the rules, introducing new requirements and applying these changes retrospectively. • As a result of the violation of this legitimate expectation, people affected by this situation were exposed to unjust treatment and sufferings. • Considering this unjust treatment, the Home Office’s attitude to Ankara Agreement visa holders is ‘disproportionate’ and should be considered as ‘malpractice’ in a democratic system. The verdict of the court: • The expectations of the claimant group that they will not be affected by the recent amendments to Ankara Agreement (ie obtaining ILR at the end of four years without being subjected to language and citizenship test and without having to pay an application fee) are justified and legitimate. • The Home Office violated this legitimate expectation with the amendments made on March 16, 2018. • As a result of this violation, the members of the claimant group suffered unjust treatment. • However, as the Home Office’s reason for making the amendments outweighs the claimants’ grievances, the amendments are legitimate and proportional to the public interest. For this reason, the immigration policy changes cannot be considered as ‘malpractice’ (Effectively managing the immigration system while trying not to make Turkish business people suffer the consequences of the amendments). 17


uuu tion rules. However, to be able to apply the changes retrospectively, there must be a very serious reason. An abstract reason such as the administration of the immigration system cannot justify this on its own. I also think it contradicts the decisions of the European Court of Justice. Even if it is in accordance with these decisions, the retrospective implementation is unnecessary, unjust, and disproportionate. We believe that the decision of the High Court is faulty. Therefore, we have decided to appeal these decisions.” By the impact of the Aydoğdu case, the barristers of the case are set to lodge an appeal in order to remedy this injustice against Ankara Agreement visa holders. To be able to carry out this litigation process, the Turkish Businessperson Association, founded under the leadership of Leni Candan, has collected a donation of nearly £100,000. The process seems quite long and complicated… Especially the Turkish speaking community in the UK is now awaiting curiously what will happen next.

Leni Candan, who initiated a petition and donation campaign to file a lawsuit following the Aydoğdu case, evaluates the court’s verdict as follows: “We are very disappointed by the verdict. Despite the judge’s conceding that the Home Office’s policy changes breached our legitimate expectations and that the Home Office violated these expectations; it is quite upsetting for us to see that the challenges faced by Turkish business people and their families as a result of these changes have not been deemed ‘unfair enough’. But we continue to believe that we are right. The acknowledgement of the High Court that there has been a violation of our legitimate expectations also suggests that we should pursue this case to the end. We already appealed to the Supreme Court. The general view of the supporters of the case is to continue our legal struggle to the end.” 18

Ayşegül Yeşildağlar, former Turkish attaché for labour and social security in London, summarises the history of Ankara Agreement as follows: “Ankara Agreement is in fact refers to the European Community Association Agreement (ECAA) signed between the then European Economic Community (EEC) and Turkey to initiate Turkey’s EU membership process in 1963. However, it is used in the United Kingdom to mention the visas and the right of free movement granted to Turkish citizens. Yeşildağlar continues: “It is an agreement not only incorporating people’s free movement rights, but also all arrangements related to the former EEC membership. For example; the EU Customs Union, to which Turkey is a party as well, is a part of this agreement. As opposed to popular belief, the Ankara Agreement is not a special agreement signed between the UK and Turkey but instead, between Turkey and the EU. Therefore, even if the UK leaves the EU, the agreement will still be valid in other member states.”

U leaders and UK agreed on the delay of Brexit until 31st October 2019. There are lots of different scenarios in Britain on what will happen next and the situation changes everyday. Even though Turkey is not a member state, the trade relations between the two countries are expected to be affected significantly. We asked the authorities about the possible scenarios;

How will Turkey be affected if a no-deal Brexit takes place? In case of a no-deal Brexit (Hard Brexit), the situation will have negative effects on Turkey in terms of economic issues and commercial relations. If Britain exits the EU without a deal Turkey may face an annual decrease on exports of $2.4 billion. The duration demanded for Brexit, meaning the separation of the United Kingdom from the European Union has expired. However, London requested another two periods of retardation and 31st October, 2019 is agreed on as the last Brexit date. If Britain cannot reach a consensus with the EU and is excluded from the Customs Union in commercial terms within this period, Turkey is expected to lose its second largest export market for a long period of time. The automotive and textile sectors are among the ones which will highly be affected and this will most probably put the business sector in a risky situation in terms of economical loss. Every year, 170 thousand automobiles produced in Turkey, are sold to the UK. The overall number on the annual export in textile and clothes is above 2 billion dollars. 20

Nas stated that “For instance, companies may stock their products renting warehouses in the other country for a limited time in order to handle the situation. Thus, this is not a permanent solution. In case of a harsh Brexit, it will be very difficult to change the current commercial net.”

According to the report published by the UK’s Department of International Trade, there is not enough time to sign continuity trade agreements before Brexit’s due date. If it were to happen, the agreements would prevent possible trade disruptions between the UK and a number of countries including Turkey, Japan, Morocco, San Marino and Andorra. The report says that; “The best way to avoid the trade cuts is to exit the EU with an agreement. This will help to protect the trade relations with the EU and existing trade relations with other countries within the EU agreement.”. Investment Opportunities in the UK Discussed “Invest In Turkey Forum” and ”UK Turkish Overseas Investment Forum” was held at last April in London. Forum was organised by EEL Events, the British Chamber of Commerce in Turkey (BCCT), Department for International Trade (DIT), British Consulate General and the Embassy of the Republic of Turkey and the sessions lasted two days.

he forum brought together key players across a variety of industry sectors including investors, financial intermediaries and policymakers to discuss, debate and analyse the opportunities for private sector investments within the current economic climate. Chairman of the day, BCCT Chairman - Chris Gaunt (Turkey) and the UK Trade Envoy Rt Hon Lord Janvrin opened the conference after which, Necmetting Kaymaz delivered an economic outlook of Turkey - an essential data for investors of developers. Director of London branch of TUSIAD, Hasan Turunç, ended the morning session by explaining the audience UK-Turkey relations in the face of Brexit. Main concerns addressed were related to questions: what are there steps to be taken by Turkey and the UK in March 2019 to facilitate a trade? Any bilateral agreement which may be agreed outside the EU and how will the modernisation of the Customs Union can affect UK-Turkey relations.

ABTIC Reviews Post-Brexit Turkey-UK Investment and Work Opportunities The Association of British-Turkish Investment and Construction (ABTIC) held its annual meeting this year in Canary Wharf. Post-brexit investment and commerce opportunities, as well as issues with employment and skilled workers with Ankara Agreement visas were among the issues discussed.

ormed in late 2018 by its first chairman Kerem Yavuzarslan, ABTIC aims to bring together people of Turkish origin, particularly in the construction and investment sectors, with local, national and international investors to widen their investment opportunities and communities. Beginning his talk by celebrating Turkish National Sovereingty and Children’s Day on 23 April, Yavuzarslan explained the aims of the Association of BritishTurkish Investment and Construction to be the bringing together of like-minded businesspeople, to create opportunities and to stimulate investment and joint ventures between Britain and Turkey. Yavuzarslan also stated that ABTIC had professional members who could help Turkish firms looking for investors or contractors to work in new or current projects in the UK. “We came together in six months by holding small meetings where we introduced ourselves to our members. In the coming days, we are aiming to hold a large event with wide engagement in order to increase the size of our organisation,” says Yavuzarslan.

At the meeting, Vice Chairman Okay Hayvacı emphasised their aim to be unity with new members, to develop connections and joint ventures with members and overseas investors who want to invest in the UK, to incentivise sector-specific standards and ethical commerce, to stand up for and support contractors and investors, to inform members with different sources, forms of communication and contacts and to provide information relevant to the construction sector. Hayvacı said, “we want to make sure our members are in a position to compete in the UK market by assisting development projects and the best possible practices.” To achieve this, Hayvacı said that they had constant information communication with their members and that they continuously followed contemporary developments.

First he succeeded, Now he’s raising a successful generation! With his TAS Restaurant chain opening in 23 different locations, Önder Şahan also obtained success in the educational front by opening Docklands Academy in 2011. Şahan, who is now exitedly pursuing a project to transform a historic library into a boutique hotel, recommends that entrepreneurs continue having visions, to never detract from what is right, and to always remain determined. And also, to listen to lots of good Turkish folk music… Şahan’s experiences in the last 30 years are enough to fill a book. In summary, though, his story begins as a factory worker responsible for ironing. Later on, he worked as a dishwasher and breakfast chef at an English café. Rising through the ranks from waiter to manager, Şahan found himself opening TAS’s first restaurant in Waterloo. Şahan describes his subsequent experiences as follows:

nder Şahan was born in Kars, one of Turkey’s easternmost cities near the border with Armenia. This city, which is known for its Russian architecture stemming from the Russian occupation in the 1900s, its world-famous skiing resorts and its ice-covered Çıldır Lake, was home to his youth and upbringing. He later moved to Ankara with his family and studied Administration for 2 years. At the age of 24, he arrived in London. Arriving 30 years ago with only enough money for travel, Şahan is now a successful entrepreneur and founder of the TAS Restaurant chain. In his own words, he describes himself as “a parent of 2 daughters. I speak very good Turkish and try to articulate myself as best as I can. I understand several humanist languages throughout the world. I listen to a lot of Turkish folk music. I like it a lot and consider them my friends.”

“As we continued opening more restaurants and more cafes one by one, we eventually found ourselves owning 23 restaurants, cafes and bars. Additionally, we opened our wholesale depo. At the moment, all of our products besides meat and milk come from Turkey. We also produce water, organic juices and wines under our own TAS brand and sell them at our stores.”

We are raising bright generations at Docklands Academy Having established the TAS brand with continuous growth in the culinary sector, Şahan has also continued to make successful investments in different sectors. He explains, “We have an education facility, approved by the British Council and the British Accreditation Centre, which offers higher education according to British standards. This summer, we are also going to bring to life our boutique hotel, which we have transformed from a historical library. We are very excited.” Docklands Academy, opened in London by Önder Şahan, provides higher education courses. Formed


TurkishBritish in 2011, the Academy also provides professional English, general English, IELTS and Cambridge exam peparaton courses, alongside modules in Tourism, Hotel Administration, Gastronomy, Culinary Arts and Business Administration. “Education is the best way to impart what someone has learned throughout their life to the next generation,” says Şahan, who continues “It is important for me to have a stake in this sector and contribute to this in some way. Education is the most effective way of doing so. We opened our educational institution to provide a service and raise bright generations, without having any profit motive.” Şahan, who considers education to be of great importance, has also opened a 5-classroom primary school in the village of Güllüce in his hometown of Kars (named Önder Şahan Primary School) and transferred it to the Ministry of National Education.

Have you ever stayed at a historic library? Önder Şahan’s current excitement derives from his boutique hotel project, which is fast nearing completion. But don’t picture a normal hotel – the project is based on transforming a historic library. Önder Şahan explains the project as follows. “We are transforming a historic hotel into an 80-room boutique hotel. We are going to move our gastronomy kitchen there. We are aiming for it to be one of the most renowned hotels in its form. Besides the hotel menu, we will also be serving our guests specialities from Kars. Additionally, for special meetings, we will have a private hall and bar, as well as a Turkish Bath and spa.”

The fundamental requirement for success is having a vision Explaining that he managed to realise his dreams one by one, Şahan says, “we believed together with valued friends that TAS would lead to great dreams and stories. As long as the world turns and we are able to serve our food, water and soup to our lovely guests, we will continue realising our dreams.” However, having dreams is not enough to be successful on its own. Şahan, who is an internationally recognised successful entrepreneur, says that in order to be a successful entrepreneur,

one must first be a successful person. He explains the required next steps as follows, “With patience and knowledge, experience and skills in the relevant sector, I believe you can fulfil your dreams successfully. As I said, patience is of fundamental importance. At the same time, one must not be stubborn but determined. My advice to young entrepreneurs is to stay smiling, to keep both joy and their wellbeing in their hearts, and listen to lots and lots of Turkish folk music. They must be aware that everything is based on life, and there is nothing more important.

I contributed to the region I immigrated to Completing his 30th year in London and having survived some tough circumstances when he first arrived, Şahan says that another key to success is to always look correctly at the future. When we asked him if he ever thought of returning to Turkey, Şahan answered, “I never needed to return to contribute to the geography I find myself in. Especially due to the opportunities I found here, I think I am much more useful here than back in Turkey.”

Investment and philanthropy at the same time Önder Şahan doesn’t just contribute through his investments but also his social support initiatives. “For the last 20 years, the TAS Restaurant Group has prided in itself for contributing to the community and fulfilling our duties, from Southwark to Westminster,” says Şahan, who continues, “being part of the community and helping local support initiatives of non-profit organisations has always been a big value of ours. This has never changed.” Şahan summarises his social support initiatives as follows. “As the TAS Restaurant Group since 2016, we have been working in partnership with Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) to give help to sick children and their families. To facilitate this, we have established the Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity. We also routinely visit the hospital. By purchasing our items, our customers are also indirectly donating to the hospital. Our special fundraising activities and campaign events are also continuing.”

Segmentify proves its success with 200 worldwide customers Segmentify, which was formed in 2015, currently has 30 customers in the UK and 200 customers worldwide. Having been identified as one of the 25 pioneers in the machine learning sector last year, Segmentify is continuing to develop while leaving its competitors behind.

-commerce is now embedded in all our lives. We all now do shopping over the internet at varying levels. While we browse online, these sites try to show us product advertisements it thinks would be of interest. So if you’re asking how these sites know who you are or what you like, you can find the answer with Segmentify founder Murat Sosyal. Sosyal explains how sites know their customers. “We provide e-commerce sites with machine learning algorithms that can be used to know their customers and make their shopping experience personal. The advertised product is based on the past browsing activities of the customer, which allows the selection of the advertisement to be tailored and the profit of the site to increase.” An alumni of the Middle East Technical University Electricity and Electronic Engineering Department, Sosyal has conducted scientific experiments over machine learning in web and information securities for many years. He also served as project manager for several international projects. Having formed Segmentify in 2015, Sosyal began investing in the UK in 2018. In the first half of that year, Sosyal was initially travelling in and out of the country. However, having seen the potential for how his product fits the industry during his partnership with the London Bridge Project (LBP), Sosyal moved permanently to London to oversee the expansion of the project across London. His customer base grew twice the size. 30

Don’t think, take action! Based on his international experience, Sidar shares his evaluations: “The UK market is one of the most competitive markets in the world! For the European continent, I think it is the most competitive. You can find the best, largest, cheapest and most ambitious companies from all over the world in this market. UK is a very saturated market so it really takes time, patience, investment and maintenance to create a success story here”. Sidar, who summarizes the biggest difference between success and failure as good preparation and leaving it up to luck, continues to say, “You must test both yourself and your products before you enter the market and go through a serious analysis process. For the UK market, how big or powerful your company is within your country’s market does not make a difference. You have to start again and be ready to run faster and longer this time. Sidar continues to give advice to entrepreneurs: “For all entrepreneurs who are thinking of doing business in UK, my first word will be that they are already late! Don’t think, just take action! But don’t just rely on your previous successes or your previous knowledge of the market and the customers. You need to research and be prepared”. Sidar, the founder of London Bridge Project, has published a book on R&D project management and incentives as well as establishing companies. He wrote several articles for newspapers, magazines, blogs and websites. As far as I have observed, almost everyone who settles in UK automatically starts to think of the same 3 business models: “opening up a cafe”, “making sales in market” or “making sales in Amazon/ Ebay”. Opening a cafe is rather expensive and requires high level of start up investment. Market or internet sales doesn’t really require that much of investment at the beginning, so it is easier for entrepreneurs, who want to find new ways of making money, to start making sales this way. As someone who’s actually making sales in Amazon and Ebay in UK with more than 20 years of experience in digital marketing and E-Commerce consultancy in Turkey, I feel like I have useful information for people who want to get into online sales arena.

Capital… How Important is it ? Capital structure and financing is important no matter the size of the company. It is imperative to thoroughly analyze the product you want to sell. In addition to the amount of money you are going to pay for the products, you have to analyze logistics, marketing and running costs. Taking everything into account, you should at least have 6 months’ worth of capital at the ready, which will keep both you and your company afloat while you generate little or no profit. If you take the right steps, you will probably start to make at least some profit at the end of the first month, from the products you’ve sold. But, making money over product’s unite rate won’t be enough for you. What’s important is your total turnover and a rise in profit.

Global Healthcare Conference in London Global Healthcare Conference was held between 21-22 May 2019 at one of London’s most prestigious business meeting venues, the Institute of Directors (IoD), in cooperation with the Private Hospitals and Health Institutions Association (OHSAD) and the Turkish-British Chamber of Commerce and Industry (TBCCI).

Cake with coloured sugar paste is the actor behind her company The first time she moved to London with her husband in 2006, she worked in many fields. After giving birth to his son in 2011, she decided to move back to Turkey and they settled down in Kayseri,

erry leaves from Geyikli, 50 kilometers away from Canakkale, and arrives to Bozcaada in about half an hour. Ferries depart and arrive quite frequently during summer, whereas in winter they become thin. Ferries carry both vehicles and passengers. When the ferry arrives at the islands centre, you are greeted with Bozcaada Castle on your right and the old harbor on your left. Right in front of you, you can see classical Turkish and Greek houses, minarets of a mosque and the bell tower of the only church in the island. Due to overfishing, fishery is not quite what it used to be in the island. But you can still see fishing boats of variety colours, waiting for the day when they can set sail for the blue seas again. Still though, at night, some boats come back with calamari, octopuses and a little bit of fish in their ponds. 100th Anniversary of 19 May 1919:

“Father, the Youth is 100 years young!” To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Turkish War of Independence, six Turkish community organisations came together in London. The event, which included live music, stalls and a gallery, was attended by over a thousand people. also aimed to provide an informative aspect for Turkish and interested non-Turkish event-goers. A gallery, explaining the history of the War of Independence and Atatürk’s Reforms was set up and was named the ‘Gallery of National Resistance’ to exemplify the struggles that Atatürk led, both militarily and politically. The gallery, prepared in both Turkish and English, was the most widely visited attraction at the event.

n 19 May 1919, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk arrived at Samsun and officially began the War of Independence, which ended in Turkish victory and the establishment of the Republic of Turkey. Six community groups, namely +1 Türkiye, the Atatürk Society UK, Azerbaijan House, Turkey Youth Union UK, the Turkish Cypriot Cultural Association and the Anatolia Cultural Association, came together jointly to celebrate the historic moment 100 years on, making it the first time in Turkish-British history that so many NGOs took part in organising a joint event. The event was sponsored by Docklands Academy, Bowling and Co Solicitors and MARM Assistance, while Turkish British Magazine took on the media sponsorship of the occasion.

“The Youth is 100 Years Young!” The event developed an online campaign to emphasise the importance of 19 May Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day. The campaign, which took place under the hashtag #AtamGençlik100Yaşında (Father, the Youth is 100 Years Old), called for participants to send selfies with their friends and family members to symbolise the ‘youth’ of different generations. The selfies collected were then compiled into a large silhouette of Atatürk, which became the focal point of the event, providing a memorable photo opportunity to remember the occasion.

The event’s live music line-up was led by Koray Ardost and Group Reflection, as well as young Turkish rappers Kılıç and TekMill and young guitarist Önem Karabay. The event, which was hosted by award-winning teacher Dilek Livaneli, therefore became a spectacle of young Turkish talent in London. Both the hosting and the performances were widely praised during and after the event.

The Importance and Meaning of May 19 The event made history due to its large turnout and number of joint organisers. Many companies and organisations had stalls during the occasion. urkish journalist and author Ece Temelkuran’s new book titled ‘How to Lose a Country’ was published by the British publishing house 4th Estate Books. The book will later be translated into 10 languages. Ms Temelkuran, who has been living in Zagreb for a while, announced on Twitter that her new book ‘How to Lose a Country’ (Bir Ülke Nasıl Kaybedilir) will be published first in English and then in various foreign languages. The publisher 4th Estate Books described Temelkuran’s new book as “An urgent call to action from one of Europe’s most well-regarded political thinkers.” The publishing house stated on its Twitter, “No longer can the reasonable comfort themselves with ‘it couldn’t happen here.’ It is happening. And soon it may be too late.” ‘How to Lose a Country’ is a “field guide” to identify ‘The Seven Warning Signs of Rising Populism’ that is sweeping the globe, according to the author. Explaining her main motivation as “a struggle to not to lose a country”, Temelkuran noted, “I am not just speaking out about Turkey. I think the whole world is in a similar political turmoil. I’ve written such a book because I think some other countries began to fall as well. Hope no one loses their countries.” In February, Temelkuran presented her new book to the public through a series of launch events in UK. Orients Ensemble’s ‘Istanbul’s 1001 Night Tangos’ concert, which consisted of completely Turkish tangos for the first time in London, was greatly enjoyed by the audience. Next on the tour list are Turkey and the other European countries.

Favouried by many radio and music blogs and magazines including Earmilk, Reprezent, Hoxton Radio, Onur attracted the attention of EDM pioneer Martin Garrix. As soon of it was released ONUR’s debut album, “A Millennial Rhapsody”, composed of three songs, has landed on many Spotify play lists, like All New India, Solaris, New Music Friday UK and New Music Friday Turkey. The history is repeating, itself” says ONUR, expressing his concern. “As a young generation, we do get involve with art, culture and music and we can express ourselves well. This song is about my abstinence from the stupid rule of the country. I’m showing my middle finger to the establishment who is afraid to explain that it is unfair”, he says. ONUR’s EP launch of ‘A Millennium Rhapsody ’ took place in London’s well known night club, The Social on May 4th. ONUR’s new concert will be at St Johns Church in Hoxton on the 15th June 2019.u

he first performance of Istanbul’s 1001 Night Tangos with the unique interpretation of the Orients Ensemble was held at St James’ Islington on April 6. The concert, which completely consisted of Turkish tangos, was played to a huge audience. According to the tenor Ethem Demir, the creator of the project and the founder of the group, the audience left the concert hall quite satisfied. Other members of the Orients Ensemble, who came together December 2018 to form the musical group, are oud artist Baha Yetkin, clarinet artist Filiz Yılmaz, cellist Aylin Aybek and pianist Rasim Yağız İlhan. All of the tangos performed at the concert were rearranged by Ethem Demir for the group. Ethem Demir, who started his professional music career at the newly established State Polyphonic Choir in 1988, performed as a soloist besides working for the choir. He incorporated the folk songs called Kalinka and Hava Nagila into the choir repertoire and worked as a lyricist and translator. He also went on secondment as a chorister, a soloist and an actor at the Istanbul branch of the Turkish State Opera and Ballet. He has appeared as a soloist in three of the 16 CD album projects he took part in. Living in London for 2 years, he founded the London Vox Polyphonic Choir and Düşyeri Polyphonic Chorus for Children. Demir is also a member of the London Symphony Chorus. Orients Ensemble will reperform the same concert in west London. In Rüya where she tells the story of peace and love, she brings together the musical heritage of different cultures in a fascinating way.

he new album offers Olcay Bayır’s own compositions for the first time. Olcay, who voices her dream of a better world in Rüya, said the process of producing the album made her feel like a child again and thereby, she was able to express her wish for love and peace innocently. Love in Olcay Bayır’s music is a dominant theme as in the song ‘Arı Oldum’ (I became a bee). Olcay said “You cannot separate bees and honey, and this metaphor is referred to in the Alawite and Sufi tradition. It is useless when they are separate. Together and in a fertile vineyard, they form something meaningful and very nice. When love is romantic or platonic, it leads to love at a higher level; the divine love.” The Dream album is the next step in a long journey that began in one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world, more than 3,000 kilometers away from cosmopolitan London. The opening song of her new album called ‘Uzun İnce Bir Yoldayım’ (I am on a long narrow road). It is an excerpt from Âşık Veysel Şatıroğlu, one of the most respected Turkish folk poets. Inspired by Şatıroğlu, Olcay reinterpreted the

lyrics: “I’m on a long road between two doors. I walk all day long; I walk all night long.” The song shows parallels with Olcay’s journey from birth to afterlife by referring to the metaphor of the Alawites. Classically trained as a soprano, collaborations with musicians from all over the world have enriched Olcay’s music as much as the rich tradition of Kurdish and Turkish folk songs. This album, edited and produced by Al MacSween and Giuliano Modarelli, bears the musical mark of the world-famous jazz collective Kefaya.u
