MACHINERY AND TRACTOR As emissions regulations continue to drive the development of tractors, we take a look at some of the latest introductions to the market. Geoff Ashcroft reports.

Tractor developments show no signs of slowing down

he UK tractor market is currently awash with the prospect of many new models. Though increasingly, makers are starting to report extended delivery times, and prices are being held on

a short-term basis as a result of the increasing cost of raw materials. Fendt recently announced it was temporarily suspending production at two of its production sites in Germany, as supply chains and distribution networks buckled under

the ongoing strain of the pandemic. During 2020, there were 10,380 new tractor registrations compared with 12,040 in 2019. And after those depressed sales last year, the market is now showing signs of recovery. Figures published by the Agricultural

Engineers Association show that the year-to-date figures for the first quarter of 2021 are up by 12.7 per cent. March 2021 revealed 2,085 units over 50hp – the highest monthly total of any month since March 2012.

CASE IH PUMA McCORMICK X5.085 AS Stage 5-compliant tractors continue to filter through, McCormick’s latest is the 75hp X5.085. Using a 3.4-litre FPT engine, the X5.085 uses EGR, DOC and DPF technology, but avoids the need for SCR after-treatment to achieve the latest emissions requirement. A 3.9-tonne Category 2 rear lift capacity can be supplemented by an optional 1.7t capacity Category

2 front linkage, while a dual pump hydraulic system can manage up to five spools. Cab comfort is provided by a four-post cab design, which incorporates a new joystick design for transmission controls. The tractor also features true four-wheel braking, having oil-immersed brakes integrated into the front axle to complement those in the rear axle.

JOHN DEERE 9R IN the big power stakes, Deere has upped the ante with its 9R Series, bringing some intelligence to go with the brawn of a range that tops out with a 691hp peak with the Cummins-powered 640 models. In a nod to GPS theft prevention, the StarFire 6000 receiver is now integrated into the cab roof, and included as standard across the 9R Series along with the 4600 4 | MAY 2021

CASE IH has introduced new versions of its long wheelbase Puma models, spanning 185-240hp. The models feature updated cab designs, with new styling inside and out, and an LED light pack to improve night-time illumination. Said to have been developed with operators in mind, the new Puma

features include illuminated steps, a hand-wash tank adjacent to the cab steps, multiple in-cab USB sockets and compressed air connections around the tractor to simplify cleaning. All Puma models are powered by 6.7-litre FPT six-cylinder engines, with Hi-eSCR technology to tackle emissions.

MASSEY FERGUSON 8S display, is IsoBus compatibility and AutoTrac activation. Increased connectivity and automation extends to AutoSetup, where jobs that have been pre-scheduled, will appear on the in-cab display when the machine enters the field. All 9R models now have additional ballasting options that allow a gross weight of 30.4 tonnes.

THE 8S from Massey Ferguson is a tractor currently dividing opinion. This four-model range replaces the outgoing long-wheelbase 7700S, and extends from 205265hp using 7.4-litre Agco Power six-cylinder engines. Revised model numbering now sees the last three digits represent the tractor’s maximum power. A four-post cab with steeply

raked front windscreen gives the 8S a striking silhouette, with a deliberate 240mm gap between cab and bonnet is part of a move towards reducing noise, heat and vibration. Currently, transmission choices include two new powershift gearboxes; Dyna-7 a 28 by 28 format, or Dyna E-Power offering a dual clutch system and a 50kph

ONE of the newer names in the UK is Farmtrac, and the Cambridgeshire-based importer Reesink Agriculture has been building its dealer network. A range of tractors covers 22 to 115hp, built by India’s third largest tractor manufacturer, the Escorts Group. This FT6075E model features a 75hp, four-cylinder, 3.5-litre engine, developed in-house. Power is transferred through a Carraro-built 12 by 12 transmission, with four gears in three ranges. Selectable four-wheel drive and diff-lock are part of the package. An air-conditioned cab is also standard, while the rear linkage will lift 2,500kg, has draft and position control and features two spool valves, in addition to two pto speeds (540 and 540E) and hydraulic trailer brakes. But it is not just diesel power that the firm is offering – Farmtrac provides the 25G, a compact, battery-powered tractor.

EXPECTED to arrive later this year, Claas’ Arion 400 tractor series will include seven models, topped off with a new 470 model boasting 155hp. Power comes from a 4.5-litre FPT four-pot, while SCR and DOC after-treatment means Stage 5 emissions are met. Arion 400-420 models get the Quadrishift 16 by 16 powershift gearbox, while 430 upwards feature the 24 by 24 Hexashift transmission. All models get a brake-toneutral function, and with more than 50 per cent of Arion 400

road speed capability at 1,500rpm. A CVT option is expected to arrive this year in the guise of Dyna-VT. Lift capacities are increased at both ends, boasting 4.8t up front and 10t at the rear. A closed centre, 150 litre/minute hydraulic pump is standard, with 205-litres being optional.

MACHINERY AND TRACTOR VALTRA N AND T SERIES FIFTH-generation updates from the Finnish maker have recently reached the four-cylinder N and six-pot T Series. Spec changes are subtle, with T series power outputs unchanged, though all powershift transmissions now gain automatic shifting from B range, with faster changes. In addition, as soon as the tractor starts to move, the engine uses the boost engine

map to develop more power. In the N Series, the three lowest powered models have been dropped, reducing crossover with the G Series models. Biggest changes for N and T are cab-derived, with the main dashboard display now fixed to the A-pillar, making way for a new steering column with integrated storage, and easier steering column adjustment.

KUBOTA M6002 KUBOTA is introducing an all-new tractor series to the UK market, slotting in between the flagship M7003 and the lower-powered MG-X models. The three-model range includes the M6-122, M6-132 and M6-142, with power from the four-cylinder 6.1-litre engine following model numbers, at 122hp, 132hp and 142hp respectively. An eight-speed powershift transmission uses three robotised ranges to provide a 24 by 24

push-button gearbox, with a creeper option extending ratio to 32 by 32. Auto-shifting and speed matching are also included. Kubota’s portal front axle with bevel gear drive offers a 4.5-metre turning radius, with a 55-degree maximum steering angle. A Category 3 rear linkage provides a seven tonne lift capacity, while pto speed choices include 540/540E and 1000/1000E. An optional 3.25t front linkage and pto is available.

DEUTZ-FAHR 8280TTV DEUTZ-FAHR has bridged the gap between its 7 and 9 Series, with the introduction of the 8 Series. Currently, there is only one model, the 287hp 8280 TTV. The 8 Series is aimed at large farming operations and contractors looking for a machine that is as capable with high power pto and transport work, as it is when ballasted up for heavy draft cultivation duties. Its 6.1-litre Deutz engine features twin-turbochargers,

which help to create more usable power and torque across a wide rev band. The 8280TTV produces maximum power from 1,7002,100rpm, with its maximum torque figure of 1,226Nm available from 1,300-1,500rpm. This particular model gets Deutz-Fahr’s own CVT ‘box, forsaking a ZF unit, to allow more the firm to more accurately tailor the transmission build to suit engine characteristics and tractor size.

NEW HOLLAND T6, T7 AND T8 NEW Holland continues to expand its T6 Dynamic Command line-up and, against recent down-sizing trends, has brought in the DCT option for this six-cylinder model, offering just 135hp, but boosting to 160hp. Called the T6.160, it has the same footprint as the T6.180, but stands out for its six-pot power and dual clutch transmission, as an option to the ElectroCommand transmission. Larger T7 models have a change in front windscreen wiper design, from top mounted to lower mounted, producing a better sweep across the glass at 175-degrees. And the T8 Genesis includes the 400hp T8.435, with a 21 by five Ultra Command full powershift transmission, available on wheels

or half-track format. Across the T8 Series, changes have been software-led to improve functionality, and is achieved without the need for a laptop or dealer visit, using ‘Firmware Over The Air’ technology, similar to smart phone updates.

FENDT 1100 VARIO MT AFTER redeveloping its smaller framed 900 Vario MT tractor’s Fendt has moved up the power bracket and overhauled its flagship rubber-tracked machines. Badged 1100 Vario MT, these four new models get a significantly different powertrain to their predecessors, spanning 511-673hp. Out goes the Agco Power V12 engine and in comes a MAN 15.2-litre six-pot, and with it comes a Fendt Vario CVT. Like the 900 Series tracked models, it works with one pump and two motors, but is rated to 600hp, which is all that goes to the drive wheels on the flagship 1167 MT model.

Surplus power is directed towards pto and hydraulic performance. Larger mid-rollers with polyurethane roller coatings and the use of springs and dampers brings improved ride comfort too.

MACHINERY AND TRACTOR Developments within the loader market have seen a host of models added, with manufacturers upping the power at the top end and offering more compact models at the lower end. Alex Heath looks at some of the options.

The lowdown on loaders

staple on most farms, the loader has developed to be a multifunctional but integral machine on livestock, arable and energy generation units. As a result, manufacturers are increasingly developing specialist

machines, with most recent developments happening either end of the size scales. At the top end, loaders have been given greater power, lifting credentials and reach, with anaerobic digestion units, large livestock units and grain stores the

destination for the four tonnes-plus lift capacity machines. At the other end, compact loaders are still a popular choice for those with narrow and old buildings to deal with, with manufacturers reporting an increasing demand for multiples of smaller machines on dairy farms

for pushing feed and scraping slurry. While almost all loaders now feature emission compliant Stage 5 engines, there is also a noticeable shift towards the electrification of these yard based machines, with smaller electric models now being offered by several manufacturers.

JCB TM420S JCB has given the TM420 the ‘S’ treatment, following in the footsteps of the TM320S. The new TM420S features the same lifting parameters as the TM420, 4.1 tonnes to 5.45 metres, however, it features a significant power increase at 173hp. This is developed from its Stage 5, 4.8-litre engine. Power-to-weight ratio stands at 17hp/t, while torque is 690Nm. It can now also be specified with 26-inch wheels and has a heavier

duty chassis and axles, compared to the standard TM420, to deal with the increased power.

SINGLE PASS OVERSEEDING

In addition, an eight speed powershift transmission features, with torque lock up in every forward gear and capable of 50kph. It can be operated manually, shifting through the gears using joystick buttons or by switching to automatic power-shifting for gears five to eight. The new Command Plus cab features a one-piece windscreen, offering an increase in forward visibility by 13 per cent, according to the manufacturer. Internally, a simplified control layout can be found, with most functions accessed through a switch panel on the right-hand pillar.

MERLO has introduced the TF65.9TCS170-HF to its heavyduty range of telehandlers, designed with handling a high volume of materials in situations such as grain stores and anaerobic digestion units. Offering a maximum lift capacity of 6,500kg and a maximum lift height of 8,800mm, it is powered by a four-cylinder, 4.5-litre FPT engine producing 170hp. The Stage 5 engine is equipped with both diesel particulate filter and selective catalytic reduction. A 40khp hydrostatic transmission is fitted as standard and comes with electronic transmission control, which controls the engine response while using the hydraulic functions. Hydraulic output is 60 litres/minute from the variable displacement pump.

WEIDEMANN has updated its 13 Series compact wheel loader with a choice of engines and driving functions. The 1390 has three, threecylinder Stage 5 Yanmar engines to choose from: 25hp, 45hp or 54.5hp. The smallest engine has a 1.2-litre displacement, while the larger two options feature a 1.6-litre version. In addition, the manufacturer has included ‘ecDrive’, an electronic control of the hydrostatic transmission, allowing four

drive modes to be used. These modes can be selected to alter how the power is delivered to the machine’s components, such as forward speed against hydraulic performance. There are four hydraulic pump options, up to 84 litres/minute. The loader is available with a platform or cab and has three headstock kinemetic options. As a result, the maximum height to bucket pivot point is 3,200mm while tipping load is up to 2,100kg.

BOBCAT L85 BOBCAT has entered the compact wheeled loader market with the L85, the first of a range of pivot steer loaders that it is set to introduce. Featuring a 2.4-litre, four-cylinder engine from Doosan, developing 68hp, the L85 has a tipping load capacity of 3,100kg and can lift to a height of 3,250mm. Its operating weight is 5,091kg and it can be fitted with buckets of 0.8 to 1.2cu.m. Hydraulic performance is 75 litres/minute and up to 103 litres/minute with the high flow option. Drive is via a 20kph

hydrostatic motor, while 30kph road speed is and option. Standard spec includes a cab, with suspended seat and integrated

armrest for the operator. Other features include automatic park brake, rear view camera and diff lock.

KOVACO ELISE 900 THE Elise 900 from Slovakian company Kovaco is now being imported into the UK. Said to be the world’s first electric skid steer, lead acid batteries are used for ballast, with two capacity options; a 240Ah version or 400Ah unit. The former provides power for up to six hours of operation and provides the equivalent of 30.8hp (23kW), while the latter has a run time of more than eight hours and a power output equivalent to 52.3hp (39kW). Charging times are said to be just over five hours for full replenishment, while topping up to 80 per cent from flat is about three hours. It features three electric motors; a pair provide traction, while the third is for hydraulic operation. Rated power for each is 13.4hp (10kW) with peak power topping out at 36.2hp (27kW). Depending on battery size, lift capacity is either 900kg for the smaller battery or 1,400kg for the larger. The loader has a pin pivot height of 3,637mm.

NEW HOLLAND D SERIES UPDATES NEW Holland has upgraded its D Series loading shovel range with improvements focused on the operator’s experience and cost of ownership savings. The four model range which spans operating weights from 11,303kg to 19,540kg has had plenty of refinement in the tech department, with an eight-inch touch-screen added which can also be operated through configurable buttons mounted on the armrest. A self-levelling mode

has also been added, which orientates the fork or bucket to be parallel to the floor. Other features designed with productivity in mind include a weighing system, tyre pressure monitoring system and an optional 43,000 Lumen LED lighting package. The manufacturer also claims the latest generation has 10 per cent lower fuel usage while service intervals have been extended from 500 to 1,000 hours, offering a 20 per cent saving on service costs.

CLAAS TORION 956 SINUS The nine-tonne loader has a straight tipping load rating of 6,095kg and reaches 3,730mm to the bucket pivot point. Power comes from a 4.5-litre, four-cylinder Deere Power Systems engine, developing 106hp. Axles are driven via a twospeed hydrostatic transmission, capable of 40kph.

THE latest addition to Claas’ Torion range is the 956 Sinus. Like the previously launched 738T Sinus, the loader not only pivots in the middle, but also has a rear steering axle. The rear axle has a turning angle of 25 degrees, which combined with the 30 degree angle of the middle pivot, results in an outside turning radius of 4,450mm.

KRAMER COMPACT MODELS KRAMER has added two compact models to its wheeled loader range, the KL12.5 and KL14.5. Using three-cylinder engines from Yanmar, the former has an output of 25hp while the latter has 39hp. Both models have a width of 1,260mm and height of 2,170mm and wheelbase of 1,525mm although the KL14.5 is slightly longer overall. Drive is through a 20kph hydrostatic transmission,

with a 30kph option on the larger model. While the smaller model has an operating weight of 1,920kg the larger model sits at 2,070kg. Because of this, the larger model has a tipping load of 1,400kg, compared to 1,140kg on the smaller. Both measure 2,800mm to the headstock pivot point and use Z-kinematics for higher tearout force.

MANITOU NEWAG XL MANITOU has launched two new larger models in its NewAg range, the MLT 841 and MLT 1041. The new models, which both have a lift capacity of 4.1 tonnes, are the first to enter the manufacturer’s NewAg XL line-up – a new heavyduty platform based on performance and comfort. With a lifting height of 7,600mm for the MLT 841 and 9,650mm for the MLT 1041, both models are fitted with a Stage 5 Yanmar engine producing 141hp, which the 10 | MAY 2021

manufacturer says has 12 per cent more torque while reducing fuel consumption by 11 per cent compared to previous models. A torque converter with automatic powershift gearbox is capable of 40kph. Maintenance features have been addressed too, with a two-part opening of the engine bay, centralised greasing points and a new hatch in front of the radiator for quicker cleaning. Hydraulic flow from the load sensing pump is 200 litres/minute.

impact or save on establishment costs, there appears to be a tool out there to do the job. Those looking to carry out restorative cultivations, or adopt a more weather-proof process with traditional plough and powerharrow based systems will not be

HORSCH FOCUS TD HORSCH has launched a three-metre version of its Focus TD strip-till drill, to encourage smaller operations into strip tillage and sowing. The 3m model has a steel hopper with 3,500-litre capacity, partitioned at 60:40. In addition, the firm’s MiniDrill with an additional 400-litre capacity is available, extending operational versatility.

POTTINGER TERRASEM CLASSIC POTTINGER has extended its range of Terrasem mulch drills with the Classic series. Without tillage equipment, the Terrasem Classic becomes easier to pull, and its working width extends from four- to nine metres. Seed hopper capacity is 3,000 litres on machines up to 6m, or 3,950 litres if the machine is equipped with a hopper extension. axle, and keeping each pair driven is a design said to resist a single disc from stalling. Each pair of discs is also protected by a rubber suspension unit, with a scraper used to keep the inner side of every disc clean.

THE first BvL V-MIX Drive Maximus 21-2S self-propelled diet feeder is at work in the UK. Powered by a new sixcylinder 224hp FPT Stage 5 engine, the mixer feeder features a milling head which uses Hardox tines to ‘rake’ silage out of the clamp rather than blades to chop it out, giving a clean face to the clamp, says the manufacturer. Ingredients are transported to the 21cu.m tub via a conveyor and mixed using twin augers before being distributed via a 1,100mm-wide side door or cross conveyor. An additional rear door can be specified to allow blends to be premixed from bulk stocks before collection via the milling head and

there is also a small hopper on the side of tub for adding high value minerals. Options include four-wheel steer, four-wheel drive and air suspension, while stainless steel liners can be specified to protect the tub from corrosive ingredients. Rations are uploaded onto the V-Dairy Feeder controller from the farm office via the Cloud and this also monitors loading, weighing the ingredients in and providing an alert when the selected quantity is loaded. MACHINERY AND TRACTOR There has been feverish activity in the world of harvesting, with a particular emphasis on baler output and developments to smaller combines. Alex Heath reports.

Harvesting output in focus POTTINGER IMPRESS OPTIONS POTTINGER has added a range of options to its Impress combi-balers. On Pro versions, an inclination sensor can be added to automatically adjust the speed of the hydraulic functions of the wrapper to the terrain, helping to ensure bales are transferred safely. In addition, the manufacturer now offers film-on-film bale binding. It says there is a threefold improvement in protection of the forage due to the increased number of layers and silage bales also benefit from additional compression. To protect the film and to make it easier to change between net and film or vice versa, an additional sliding roller is installed

in front of the roll holder. The roll holder is designed to accommodate rolls of binding material up to 1,420mm wide with a diameter of up to 310mm. The balers are still able to bind with net if required, taking a short time to change over, the manufacturer says.

KRONE BIGPACK BALER UPGRADES KRONE’S BigPack large square balers have had an overhaul and now enter their fifth-generation with several changes designed to increase efficiency and bale density. Following in the footsteps of its flagship 1290 HDP baler, the 1270 and standard 1290 balers get an extended bale chamber, lengthened by 20 per cent, to 3.6 metres. In addition, the chamber now features a full width top plate, which combined with the longer chamber, produce better shaped bales with higher weights, according to the manufacturer. The baler’s Variable Fill System has also been reworked, with an electronic brake now holding the feeder rake back, governed by a sensor measuring the angle of the packers. In doing so, the operator has a greater understanding of the load in the pre-compression chamber, allowing the baler to be driven at optimal speeds while 16 | MAY 2021

altering wad thickness according to conditions. The knotter cleaning system has also been updated, with two hydraulically powered turbines keeping the knotters in positive pressure. String boxes are now integrated into the side panels with sealed doors, which can accommodate 15kg twine spools and feature hydraulic raising and lowering of the boxes. Knife options now include a 26-blade cassette, in addition to the 51-blade version.

JOHN DEERE EXTENDS MACHINE SYNC JOHN Deere is now offering its Machine Sync technology, which enables machines to exchange data on the move and allows combine operators to guide a tractor and trailer alongside the harvester, for use on self-propelled forage harvesters and tractors. This global navigation satellite system-based synchronisation allows combines to automatically control the speed and travel direction of tractors and trailers relative to the combine. Machine Sync therefore makes harvesting safer and reduces stress for the operators, says Deere. It also avoids waste during unloading and damage to both machines and crops. The technology is not just applicable to combine harvesters but also to all harvesting processes where crops are continuously loaded into trailers. In particular, customers working with trailed elevator machinery harvesting potatoes, carrots and vegetables could benefit from this technology.

For operation, Machine Sync requires JDLink telematics, a StarFire satellite receiver and a Gen4 Premium display with automation activation. Most customers would select all these components ex-factory when ordering a new tractor and/or selfpropelled machine, although retrofitting is also possible.

NEW HOLLAND CH7.70 COMBINE NEW Holland’s CH7.70 combines the manufacturer’s twin-rotor and conventional harvesting systems into one package sitting in-between its CX straw walker range and twin rotor CR range. Boasting a 25 per cent higher throughput than conventional combines in this power segment, the new CH, which stands for crossover harvesting, is ideally placed for those users who are reaching the limits of harvesting capacity with its CX straw walker machines, mainly as a result of green straw, the manufacturer says. Key to the new model is a 607mm diameter, 1,560mm wide heavy-duty threshing drum positioned in front of the two longitudinal rotors. With eight rasp bars and a new heavy duty hydraulic variator, drum speed can be matched to the crop and field conditions from the cab. Crop then passes through a variable geometry concave with 85 to 121-degrees of wrap, before going through a four paddle beater, lifting it to the rotors. Twin rotors at 533mm in diameter are just 26mm smaller than the rotors used in the firm’s flagship

CR10.90. At 3,450mm long, the rotors offer 2.9sq.m of separation area. Cleaning is taken care of by the same cascade system used on the CX5 and 6 models. The fan automatically adapts its output depending on the gradient of the path being travelled; slowing when going uphill and speeding up when going downhill, with a speed range of 530 to 1,200rpm. Total cleaning area under wind control is 5.21sq.m. A 9,300-litre grain tank features, which can be emptied in under 93 seconds thanks to an unloading speed of 100 litres per second. Unloading augers up to 6.4m can be specced.

CLAAS LEXION STRAW WALKER COMBINES CLAAS has updated its range of Lexion straw walker combines. The Lexion 5000 Series is made up of three, five straw walker models, while the 6000 Series has four, six walker models, Like the Lexion Hybrid line-up, the walker range has also grown and features some significant changes and updates, not least a completely new threshing system, along with more power, larger grain tanks and a redesigned cab. Power ratings range from 313hp to 507hp, with grain tank capacities from 9,000 to 13,500 litres.

Taking the Lexion walkers into new territory are the top two 6000 Series models, the 6800 (462hp) and 6900 (507hp). These are the most powerful straw walkers the firm has ever made, creating a greater overlap with the Hybrid models. Adopted from the Lexion Hybrid models, a new feature on 5000/6000 walker models is the firm’s Jet Stream cleaning system. Depending on model, the six or eight turbine fan unit provides greater pre-cleaning. Sieve areas equate to 5.1sq.m on the 5000 and 6.2sq.m on the 6000.

VICON’S RV5200 Series of variable chamber round baler has been updated. Designated Plus Series, the newly updated RV5216 and RV5220 models are available with a range of intake systems including the firm’s SuperFeed rotor or 14 knife SuperCut crop chopping system, and produce maximum bale sizes of 1.65 and two metres, respectively. A redesigned roller crop press can lift higher in heavier crops, while the side support arms have also been strengthened and incorporate improved limit stops. Bearings are now also mounted inside the roller. Up front, the 2.2m pick-up reel features twincam tracks and five tine bars,

along with 10mm longer tines and wider stripper plates. In addition, the baler’s driveline has also been reinforced, with uprated chains, larger bearing and through shafts for the idler rollers.

FENDT IDEAL 10 FIRST unveiled at Agritechnica 2019, the Fendt Ideal 10 not only features an increase in power over the previous largest model, but also a novel joystick steering method, that the manufacturer has announced will be optionally available on the whole of the Ideal range. With an increase of 143hp over the Ideal 9, the Ideal 10 has 790hp, developed from a 16.2-litre MAN engine. In addition, a larger version of the Dual Helix separator is used and a new cleaning system offers 15 per cent more capacity. The Cyclone Cleaning System sees grain drop down to the top sieve through a pair

of curved double-drop steps. Due to the curved shape, the laws of physics see the heavy grains gather in the lower section while the lighter parts accumulate above. The curved steps provide a wider air outlet, increasing the air volume.

MASSEY FERGUSON TW 160 BALE WRAPPER MASSEY Ferguson continues to expand its green harvest offering with the TW 160, its new trailed round bale wrapper. This model joins the TW 130, introduced in September 2018 but has been developed for more demanding work, able to handle bales up to 1,250kg. The loading arm can be adjusted to accommodate bales between 900mm and 1,600mm in diameter. It comes with a width adjustable active bale discharge system that lifts the table to catch the bale and lower it to the ground, reducing film damage. During the process a foot stand lowers to transfer the bale weight to the ground reducing stress on the tractor’s hitch. In addition to this, an optional baler tipper is available to prevent 18 | MAY 2021

the bales from rolling in hilly conditions, improving safety and reducing the time taken by loading/unloading by up to 15 per cent, says the manufacturer. The pre-stretching device is designed to work with 500mm or 750mm rolls and can be set at 55 or 70 per cent stretch for tighter wrapping and reduced film consumption.

McHALE FUSION 3 PRO A NEW model to McHale’s Fusion range sees additional equipment added. The Fusion 3 Pro includes the firm’s iTouch control console with seven-inch touch-screen display, in cab net and density adjustment, a camera to show bale transfer and the start of the wrapping process, automatic drop floor reset and automatic knife drop feature. As the Fusion 3 Pro is fitted with the iTouch Control Console, for people that want to monitor their baling process more, a moisture reading, bale weighing, and printer unit can be fitted to the machine. This allows the operator to record bale weight, dry matter content and

KUHN ROUND BALER UPDATES other machine settings such as chopped or non-chopped, number of layers of wrapping film being applied, time spent baling and number of bales produced. If all three options are fitted, the operator can print the final receipt at the end of the field giving bale total, average bale weight and average bale moisture content to the customer.

KUHN launched the VB 7100 variable chamber round baler series in 2020, with two models, the VB 7160 and the VB 7190 producing bales up to 1.6- and 1.85-metre diameters respectively. Featuring the company’s i-Dense twin tension arm system, VB 7100 balers are capable of bale densities of up to 140kg/cu.m. Bale pressure is adjusted automatically in response to moisture sensor data.

In addition, the manufacturer has integrated a bale weighing system into its FBP BalePack and VBP BalePack baler-wrapper combinations. The optional equipment is mounted on the wrapping table, with each bale weighed and a rolling average of the previous three bales provided, allowing an estimation of total production of forage or straw.

KRONE EASYWRAP 150 MOUNTED WRAPPER KRONE’S EasyWrap 150 is a single arm round bale wrapper, which can be fitted to a three-point linkage, either front or rear or mounted, and can be used on a loader. With a rotation speed of 36rpm, round bales from one to 1.5 metres in

diameter and up to 1,600kg can be wrapped. Wrap is pre-stretched to 55 or 70 per cent. Two large diameter rollers, one that is corrugated, rotate the bale. Rather than relying on a timer to dictate the amount of wrap applied, a sensor on

the wrapper arm counts the revolutions. A tipping function can leave the bales on the flat end. The bar that facilitates this is also used to trigger the automatic mode, from picking the bale up, wrapping it and dropping it done automatically.

MACHINERY AND TRACTOR Applying crop protection and nutrition is one job where timeliness and efficiency is imperative. There have been plenty of developments to help maximise time in the field, while ensuring the efficacy of applied products, as Jane Carley discovers.

Plenty of protection options 3D90 NOZZLE FROM SYNGENTA

KNIGHT TRAILBLAZER UPGRADES KNIGHT has completely uprated the Trailblazer trailed sprayer range, with models varying from the high-spec Trailblazer Pro through to the entry level Trailblazer-Lite. Pro Series machines include a number of additions, such as a sprung drawbar to offer a more even ride both on the road and in the field.

The new design includes simplified plumbing, an air purge system, automatic clean water tank fill and new induction hopper to aid effective cleaning of the whole system after work and minimise risks to both the operator and environment. Trailblazer-Lite sprayers offer high performance from a simpler machine

with a standard specification, more suited to farmers working with a tighter budget. They feature a 3,600-litre spray tank, 24-metre gull wing boom and active air suspended axle, with single nozzle bodies on a stainless steel spray line, with a Muller Smart 430 controller and Knight’s MAXImiser plumbing system.

MAZZOTTI MAF 4080 SELF-PROPELLED SPRAYER JOHN Deere’s dealer network can now offer an additional model in the Mazzotti selfpropelled sprayer range,

the MAF 4080, joining existing 2,500-, 3,000- and 3,500-litre units. Powered by a Stage 5 175hp engine from John Deere, the MAF 4080 has a hydrostatic transmission, capable of 40 or 50kph. Tank capacity is 4,000 litres and the spray pack uses M-Spray, a new dual-circuit solution system that features a dedicated 600 litres/ minute filling pump, said to fill the tanks in less than seven minutes. Spraying is carried out by a dedicated high-pressure 750 litres/ minute spraying pump with direct rate control, which provides rapid application rate adjustment. All operations, including rinsing,

can be carried out either from inside the cab or via the new Solution Command keypad and digital display at the central operator station on one side of the machine.

The chassis is 200mm longer with a three-metre wheelbase and running gear has been beefed up. Power is from a 3.8-litre, Stage 5 Cummins engine, developing 148hp. Attached directly to the engine is

the air compressor, while the radiator sits on top of the engine bay. A heavier duty four-speed gear box provides the mechanical drive at 50kph on the road and up to 20kph in the field.

Booms

SYNGENTA has launched its new 3D90 nozzle, designed and engineered to better target spray application, while also reducing the risk of drift. It combines the performance of the well established 3D nozzle, with the benefits of completely new 90 per cent drift reduction technology (DRT), says Syngenta. This latest development builds on the long-term partnership between Syngenta and Hypro Pentair, pioneering recent nozzle developments. Fully compatible with Pulse Width Modulation systems, the 3D90’s design incorporates an integral snaplock cap, which makes it easy to fit onto any sprayer. At early spring growth stages the 3D90 nozzle offers a combination of coverage of small targets and drift reduction, and it is also said to offer the coverage needed in autumn for effective pre-em applications. The 3D90 can be used for fungicides. With 90 per cent drift reduction, the manufacturer says more spray gets into the crop which offers improved penetration and helps to protect plants from higher disease risk when there is greater humidity within the canopy.

It can be specified with a range of MK spray booms from 24 to 36m wide. Mazzotti is now part of the John Deere stable, so in common with other sprayers in the range, it uses Deere’s spray controls including individual nozzle control and a new John Deere-sourced operator station.

McCONNEL AB30 McCONNEL has launched a new version of the Agri Buggy sprayer. The AB30 has been reworked from the ground up, to bring its specification in line with other 3,000-litre machines on the market. 20 | MAY 2021

JOHN DEERE R740I TRAILED SPRAYER JOHN Deere has extended its trailed sprayer offering with the mid-range R740i which incorporates the company’s latest precision and intelligent technology. This 4,000-litre capacity machine offers boom widths from 18 to 30m, with features including a new multi-functional control lever, the Solution Command operator station and the PowrSpray dualcircuit solution system. PowrSpray is designed to reduce filling times, improve spray application and

increase accuracy. The R740i is also available with a closed transfer system ready option, allowing closed transfer devices to be used to induct chemicals direct from specially designed packs, eliminating the risk of operator exposure or spills. Additionally, it can be equipped with an individual nozzle control system, an electronic system allowing nozzles to be switched on and off according to GPS maps, avoiding overlaps and saving chemical.

AMAZONE’S Pantera 4504 self-propelled sprayer features a new in-house operating system, modified spray agent liquid circuit and changes to the operator station. The all-new SmartCenter and operator station are protected under the access cover on the left side of the sprayer alongside a new 60-litre induction bowl. Twin piston diaphragm pumps, have a total output capacity of 520 litres/minute, but offer a suction capacity of up to 700 litres/minute and have been repositioned over to the right-hand side to reduce noise during the filling process. The SmartCenter filling control is available with a choice of specification levels; on the Comfort-Pack plus, the TwinTerminal 7.0 feature a pressure-sensitive touch-screen for the operator to select the desired function. Tools for the job MASCHIO BISONTE MASCHIO’S latest range of offset flail mowers, imported by Opico, range from 1.57 metres to 2.57m wide and have been developed for tractors from 50-200hp. Suitable for boundary mowing, they are available as left and right versions. The offset flail range also tilts downwards by up to 65-degrees and upwards by 90-degrees, making them suited to hedge siding and ditch sides. Offset models can be combined with a frontmounted machine to increase productivity. The front/rear range spans 2.26-3.1m widths and is suitable for tractors from 60hp-200hp. Maschio’s Bisonte and Buffalo machines can also be used to shred and mulch small branches and twigs.

KUHN MULTI-LONGER GII KUHN Farm Machinery has launched its first telescopic arm hedgecutter. Called the MultiLonger GII 7457 E-TPAL, it offers a fully extended horizontal range of 7.4m and a maximum vertical working height of 8.4m. This latest model has a parallelogram pivot-mounted straight arm configuration. It carries a 57hp hydraulic motor and 21kW air-cooled radiator with double heat exchanger. MultiLonger GII has a 1.2m, belt-drive flail head as standard, offering 240-degrees of flail head rotation. An optional 1.5m flail head with hydraulic roller is available. Controls include a fourfunction joystick with electric proportional control, and ground following through hydro-pneumatic lift control. s trailer developments go, few can currently match the innovation in the Goliath Hybrid trailer from Buckinghamshire engineer Chris Ecob. Having turned the market on its head with some fresh thinking, the single-spine chassis design with wishbone suspension is about to revolutionise the market with big strides made in safety and stability. And that is before the weight-saving potential of a Teflon coated, plastic-welded body is factored in. Such innovation was enough to win the entrepreneur the top prize in the 2020 British Farming

Trailers, tankers and muck spreaders have been under the spotlight and several have been on the receiving end of some fascinating development to improve safety, payload potential and productivity. Geoff Ashcroft reports.

Away from trailers, tankers and spreaders continue to evolve. Reprofiled body sides help to boost capacities without stretching the footprint; apps

and technology improve operator convenience; and slurry spreading equipment continues to offer improved application accuracy.

SLURRYKAT PREMIUM PLUS RANGING from 7,250- to 25,000-litre capacities, SlurryKat’s Premium Plus models are based on the original Super Tanker models, but come with a host of new features built into the standard specification. These include a new pump with vane lubrication, 10cu.m/minute filling speed and a larger overflow valve to accommodate quicker filling. In addition, there are extra filling points for the increased volume. Running gear has also been

changed, with 150mm square beam axles and 420mm by 180mm load sensing brakes in each hub. A sprung drawbar is also included, as are redesigned anti-surge baffles within the tank. At the back of the tanker, there is the option of three-, four-and five-point fixings for dribble bars, trailing shoes and implements. And if used as a ferry tank, the optional over-the-hedge boom is said to be 46 per cent lighter.

GOLIATH HYBRID TRAILER PERHAPS the most innovative trailer design in recent years is that created by Buckinghamshire engineer Chris Ecob. With investors and production facilities now in place as Goliath Mouldings, production is underway for a trailer which uses independent wishbone suspension with a centralspine chassis and a totally revised body construction. An ultra-low chassis design contributes to high stability and offers a low centre of gravity without

compromising on ground clearance. A gulley through the centre of the trailer body floor increases capacity and the combination of steel body framework, panelled with Tefloncoated plastic sheets, helps when tipping sticky materials. Expect a lower unladen weight and more payload potential than traditional trailer designs – typically, 1.5 tonnes lighter with 3t more carrying capacity than other trailers in the 18t class.

ABBEY MACHINERY’S SMART TANKER ABBEY Machinery’s Smart tanker is one which features a near infra-red (NIR) sensor combined with application rate technology which includes flow meter, sensing gate valve with automatic, electric actuation and is also IsoBus compatible. the tanker, allowing the distribution head to be sequenced electronically to operate within a group of functions, for example boom raise/ lower, gate valve operation and reversing of the distributor head. The Smart tanker is fitted with a water-cooled vacuum pump, water jacket around the rotor assembly and a filtering system – all aimed at extended run times by managing temperatures.

NORTH NORFOLK VEHICLE SOLUTIONS CHASER BIN NORTH Norfolk Vehicle Solutions has developed a no-frills chaser bin for small-scale growers. Designed with low ground pressure and low weight in mind, the chaser offers a capacity of eight tonnes. This single-axle design has been engineered with balance in mind and can be used as a chaser bin or drill filler. Its 300mm unloading auger is

driven by pto, with two spools required for the intake slide and to fold the top of the auger to suit field and transport requirements. A viewing panel lets the operator see the level of contents and the chaser is supplied on 17.5 R25 industrial tyres, allowing customers to fit their own flotation wheels and tyres.

KTWO BIO AND EVO KTWO has improved its Bio and Evo muck spreaders to provide increased body volumes. The design is one that uses a tapered body profile, which flares outwards from the floor. The firm says reduced bridging and easier emptying is a result of this revised design. In addition, the spreading rotors now get hardened spinner paddles,

with Evo models gaining Hardox rotor bases with sweeper bars. When it comes to Rodeo trailer improvements, the firm has revised the design of its silage-sides, with an increase in thickness from 2mm to 3mm steel, improving rigidity. In addition, the trailer’s front window design has been revised to offer increased visibility and a removable ladder is now part of the specification.

MACHINERY AND TRACTOR HI-SPEC TRAILING SHOE HI-Spec Engineering has introduced its own design of trailing shoe. Available in working widths of 6, 7.5, 9 and 10.5 metres, it features a chassis-mounted mast to ensure tanker and shoe are perfectly balanced and that the shoe is properly supported on the tanker. In addition, the tanker’s axle has been moved rearwards to further improve balance. The 7.5m, 9.0m and 10.5m trailing shoes feature double folding to reduce overall height for transport, keeping

the attachment below the height of a standard Hi-Spec 2600 tanker. A hydraulic self-levelling system is used on the two largest versions to ensure the shoe continues to follow ground contours without excess pressure being applied to outer boots. Hardened trailing shoes part the grass sideways and allow slurry to be placed on the ground through a rubber boot. The Hi-Spec trailing shoe can also be used as a dribble bar if needed without any contact with the ground.

BUNNING COMPACT SPREADERS BUNNING has extended its range of Lowlander Mk4 Compact muck spreaders with two new models. The range now includes the 12-tonne capacity, 14.6cu.m 120C TVA and a 15t, 16cu.m 150C TVA. Physical body size increases are modest, says the company, thanks to the flared body design of the Compact range. The 120C is 500mm longer than the smallest

105C, while the 150C is 1,000mm longer – both are still 800mm shorter than the regular Lowlander Mk4 spreaders, helping manoeuvrability. Braked axles and an upgraded floor-drive gearbox also feature. The 120C gets a 150mm square axle with 406 by 120mm brakes, while the 150C gets larger 406 by 140mm brakes on the same size axle.

VREDO VT7138-3 APPLICATION specialist Vredo has rolled out further development of the big guns with its six-wheeled self-propelled slurry tanker, the VT7138-3. Complete with a Scania Stage 5, 16-litre V8 engine, this self-propelled tanker packs 710hp and 3,250Nm of torque – enough some might say, to handle its wide body 32,000-litre capacity tank.

RICHARD WESTERN PUSHER RAM TRAILERS SUFFOLK-based trailer maker Richard Western has introduced a three-model ejector trailer range. Called the Pusher Ram series, it offers 40, 50 and 60cu.m capacities and uses tandem axle running gear on the smallest model and a triple axle configuration for the larger two models. Western’s version uses a

monocoque body with folded side walls for strength. Where the 40cu.m model uses tractor hydraulic power, the larger models offer a pto-driven hydraulic system. With low maintenance in mind, the sliding headboard uses nylon wheels with Oilon guide blocks. Unloading time is 35 seconds.

Making the most of the tank volume is an optional 16,000-litre/ minute centrifugal pump, offering a generous loading and unloading capacity. A two-speed CVT transmission, developed by Vredo, covers 0-20 and 0-40km/hour, while an Eco mode allows the Scania engine’s performance to be tempered when necessary in favour of fuel efficiency.

TRAMSPREAD SUFFOLK RANGE TRAMSPREAD has launched a new range of dribble bars. The imaginatively-named Suffolk range, built in Suffolk, span working widths from six to 24 metres. Booms from six to 15m fold vertically, with an automatic transport lock, while the 24m unit folds horizontally towards the tractor cab. Tramspread says the location of the swinging arm does not compromise the tractor’s pick-up

hitch, which allows the tractor to tow a pump or reel with the dribble bar fitted. A single macerator is used on six to 12m models, with a twin macerator option available on the 12m. Twin macerators are used on 15 to 24m models. The Suffolk range includes pipework designed for retro-fitting flow meters and slurry monitors which use the Tramspread IsoBus Raven Box.
