.E. Salmon Farming is no stranger to rubber-tracked tractors. Based at Great Fransham, Norfolk, the farming family was an early adopter with the original Cat 65 tractor and has had a succession of rubber-tracked machines for primary cultivations ever since. The fleet includes a 17-year-old 9,000-hour example of the legendary Claas 95E, which supports a 3,000-hour Challenger MT865C by shouldering about 300 critical hours/year with autumn cultivations. And until last year, the farm also ran an older MT865B. Ed Salmon, who runs the 1,900-hectare contract farming operation from Hyde Hall Farm

alongside his father Robert, says: “The raw power of a C18 Cat motor takes some beating. The only downside with twin-track machines
is the potential for scuffing on headlands and a relatively low travel speed.” But he says this has all changed since the arrival of a Claas Axion half-track last year, in the guise of a pre-series Axion 960TT. The 445hp FPT-powered half-track uses Claas’ CMatic continuously variable transmission, offering a 45kph maximum travel speed.

“The half-track is a seriously good tool and one that offers far more versatility than an all-out tracked machine, so it can handle a wider variety of tasks,” he says. “We are very compaction-conscious and anything that reduces ground pressure for us is a huge step forward.” The Salmons’ focus on reduced compaction has seen the farm adopt a controlled traffic focus at harvest. Running a 36-metre tramline
system with 2.5m wheel track widths allows the farm’s Claas 780TT combine with 12.3m header and chaser bin to minimise wheelings. “Our soils have restructured well over the last few years from using a 12m CTF system at harvest. “For us, it is about knowing when to get off the land and the low ground pressure tracked machines means we can make the most of our resources,” he explains.
Fuel tank capacity is 220 litres more than the wheeled Axion 960 but mudguards need to extend further back.

but until that time, we will keep the 865C for the heavy work. And if it runs for 20 years, the Challenger will prove to be good value horsepower.” With soils across the farmed area ranging from chalky boulder clays to blowing sand, Mr Salmon says the lighter land areas can be managed with less power. A Fendt 939 with central tyre inflation then steps in for drilling and until the arrival of the Axion TT, it would also have been used with the farm’s chaser bin.
Reduced contact
The farm’s 6m and 8m drills do mean more wheeling, but with tracks where possible, soil structure is not overlooked. Arrival of the Axion 960TT has brought a big improvement in compaction management, says Mr Salmon. The 960TT has more than proved its worth at Hyde Hall Farm
and is viewed as a worthy successor to the MT865B it replaced. “We have used the TT with our 8m Vaderstad drill and 12m Carrier and the traction is phenomenal, with just 2 per cent slip,” he says. “We do have a seven-furrow Lemken plough, which is no real test for a 445hp tractor, but during harvest it pulls a tri-axle GR30 chaser bin.
“We thought the fixed drawbar might have been a problem, but with in-cab adjustment to the rear ride height, it is very easy to connect to trailed implements. “It cannot quite handle our 6m TopDown cultivator,” he says. “If it could be boosted to 500hp, we could probably replace the MT865C with a second Axion TT,

“We have had some good experiences with tyres and tracks over the years, and the Axion TT is the best all-rounder by far,” says Mr Salmon. “We have tried a Magnum Rowtrac but the way its front idler sits upwards means a reduced contact patch. I believe the benefit of that system is so marginal, you may as well run tyres and save on the outlay. “We recently tried a John Deere 8RX too. Nice tractor, impressively maneuverable and a much more comfortable cab than the Axion, but

I am not convinced about having track units on a front axle.” He says the Axion TT’s biggest advantage over other tracked options, is its large contact patch and sophisticated suspension system that keeps the rubber track in contact with the ground. Each track assembly has been developed so the front idler, rear drivewheel and mid-rollers all move independently, with their own suspension and oscillation capability. This maintains a constant footprint on uneven surfaces, allowing each track to hug the ground.
and the rear mudguard mouldings need to be longer to keep the back of the cab clean,” he says. Operator Lee Oakes is equally upbeat about the Axion TT’s performance. He says: “I have had tractors with on-the-move tyre adjustment and this is in a different league,” he says.
Comfort
Softly Compared to a 900mm-wide tyre on 42-inch rims, the 890mm wide track has a 35 per cent larger footprint and can deliver 15 per cent more tractive effort. Even on the mid-sized 735mm tracks, Hyde Hall Farm’s Arion treads softly. “This tractor has a huge footprint, and with 710/60 R34 front tyres, it really does ride well,” says Mr Salmon. “Importantly, it keeps

a full track flat on the ground and this makes it an ideal machine for high-speed top work.” A Cherry Products front weight box is the only additional ballast and includes a lift-out one-tonne concrete block. “When drilling, we remove the front weight block and lower the
front tyre pressures from 18 to 12psi,” he says. For all its capabilities, Mr Salmon says the tractor is not perfect. “I would like to see a bigger fuel tank so we can run long days without needing to top-up. It is easy to bang your head on the nearside cab mirror when climbing the steps

If Claas gets the software sorted out and improves GPS auto-steer integration with Cebis, the final version will be a far better operator’s machine.” Mr Oakes says the track system is simple enough to maintain and clean, thanks to spoked wheels which use bolt-on rubber pads. “Compared to other models of half-track and four-track machines we have tried, this is currently the best of the bunch for our farming operation.”

MACHINERY AND TRACTOR Combine harvesters continue to increase in capacity and sheer bulk, but for smaller or mixed farms, there are still plenty of options, extending to used or hired machines. Jane Carley reports.
Cutting through combine options I nvesting in machinery takes serious consideration, not least when they have such a pivotal role to play as a combine. While redundant for much of the year, come harvest the threshing machine needs to be firing on all cylinders, leaving farms of all sizes with multiple options with how the crop is bought in, be it with an owned, hired or contractor’s machine. Smaller new combines now make up a tiny percentage of UK sales – just 6-8 per cent, suggests New Holland’s Robert Mills. “Many small farms find it more convenient to use a contractor or buy a used combine,” he says. However, he adds that used
choice is not necessarily restricted to older, high hour machines. “Some buyers will only keep a combine for one or two seasons, or an ex-demo combine can be a good buy. Younger machines can also come with the balance of a service contract and warranty, and on a CX7 or CX8 it is possible to upgrade the warranty with a service plan for up to five years.”
Acreages However, an older combine can serve smaller acreages well, says Adam Hayward, Claas combine specialist. “There are Dominators still going strong with customers who bought them when they felt the

Option Nigel Worthington, sales director at John Deere dealer Rea Valley Tractors’ Shrewsbury depot, says the used combine is the cheapest option on paper, with hiring coming in at about £60/hectare and a contractor at £84/ha or more. “But remember that the contractor

MR Hayward says one drawback of a higher capacity used machine is it will generally have been owned by a large farm or contractor and been worked hard. “A used Lexion will have had a large tonnage put through it, so you may need to spend money on parts such as bearings and other wearing components. However, once the work is done, it could still be a good buy as a smaller farm will put fewer hours on it.” He suggests it is worth a good look at the service record, as larger businesses will generally have covered their investment with a full service maintenance package such as Claas’ Maxicare. “It is possible to cover all the preventative maintenance for up to five years, so this would be a benefit, although it will obviously put a premium on the price of the combine.” Finance is also freely available on older combines, along with a one-year warranty if bought from a Claas dealership.

It is the most expensive, but also the most convenient.” In the east of the country farm sizes continue to increase as smaller farms sell up, but those staying in the business who wish to retain control of harvesting are more likely to buy a used combine than get a
contractor in, suggests Andrew Whiteley of Massey Ferguson dealer Peacock and Binnington. He says: “We bought seven or eight Massey Ferguson Activas and Betas before harvest and sold them on. There is a shortage of good secondhand small combine trade-ins in this area as farmers are not buying new, so we look to farm sales or retirees.”

“There is also the advantage that it will have been through a Claas workshop before being offered for sale,” Mr Hayward says. Mr Worthington says there are plenty of used John Deere T550s about, often coming onto the market as small farms disappear, and many at ‘sensible money’, but points out that availability of skilled labour is a consideration.
Maintenance He says: “You could opt for a low-houred used T550 at £80,000, or spend £40,000 on an older, higher-houred machine taken in part exchange, which over 10 years is going to be £4,000 per year or £19.20/hectare, plus the extra costs of maintenance and repairs, say £24-£36/ha in total.” Both options have their benefits, he says. “You would have to be prepared to work on the combine both before and during the season to keep it running with an older example. If you are less mechanically minded,
then the £80,000 machine is a better bet. If bought from a John Deere dealer it can come with dealer checks, which adds another £5,000-£6,000, but it will have a warranty and you know it will work. “All the key points, such as knife, feeders, belts and clearances for the concave and rasp bars will be taken care of.” Mr Whiteley suggests a second-hand smaller combine is a good purchase. “They do not tend to have the hours on that a higher capacity combine would and they are simple to maintain with low service costs. “Buying used from an MF dealer gives the advantage that it comes fully serviced and harvest prepared, with a ‘bronze’ warranty package good for 100 hours as standard, which can be upgraded, he says. “The Activa and Beta come with Autoguide, electric sieves, yield and moisture monitoring plus a good cab with air-con and fridge.”

BUYING NEW CLAAS continues to offer smaller combines with its Avero and Tucano range and Mr Hayward says that by choosing a small new machine, the buyer can specify the ideal capacity for their acreage. “It will use less diesel than a larger harvester and can be specced for the precise needs of the farm and its crops.” Where buyers can take advantage of the annual investment allowance, a new machine can be a good option, says Mr Mills. “The latest smaller New Holland combines come with big features. Our new CH crossover combine is ideal for mixed farms as it offers high grain quality and output from its twin rotors but with the straw quality of a walker machine, yet is affordable. “For farms looking to keep a combine for five to 10 years,
it could be a better choice than a used machine.” Mr Mills says finance is relatively cheap at the moment and as growers aim to get the maximum potential from their crops, it is worth investing in technology such as connectivity to make best use of harvest data, regardless of farm size.

Ideal “It is the ideal machine to keep on top of 200 hectares. But smaller farms do have a lot more options than someone harvesting 800ha who needs to buy a large machine to get the job done. With 200ha to cut, buying new or used, hiring, sharing with a neighbour or using a contractor could all work, depending on your circumstances. “If you have a combine to trade in that is worth £70,000-80,000, then a new T550 is going to cost you £10,000 a year or £48/ha.”
Grain tank size remains an individual choice, but the trend is for larger cutter bars. Mr Hayward says the average five years ago was 7.5 metres but that has now increased to 9m with a significant proportion moving to 10.5m headers. “There are many more factors to consider when deciding the right size of combine for you,” he says. “It can depend on whether you are aiming for milling premiums, how much grain storage you have and
the logistics, such as how many trailers are available. Rotations are also changing, with farms moving away from oilseed rape to growing

If there is uncertainty about the business direction, hiring a combine can work very well.” Mr Worthington adds: “Hire tends to be down to the specialists, but that is not to say a dealer would not consider hiring a nice trade in for the season for about £15,000, if you do not want to commit to a long term deal, perhaps if your acreage is likely to increase next year. “Dealers can be flexible where combines are concerned so it is always worth talking through your requirements.”

HIRING SPECIALIST hirer APH has an extensive combine fleet and general manager Martin Powell suggests seasonal hire can work if the farm’s cropping fits in with an early or late season term. “You could get a £20,000 hire combine for as little as £10,000 if your harvest is completed before the middle of August,” he explains. “Plus, it is easy to quantify the cost of harvest – there are always hidden costs with a combine you own.” Hire terms are generally three to five years, but Mr Powell points out this can work well for smaller farms. 10 | NOVEMBER 2020

Tines or discs? Working shallow or deep? Jane Carley finds out how to navigate the cult
T
he only predictable aspect of autumn cultivations is their unpredictability. As recent seasons have shown, that old faithful tillage implement in the shed may not cope with extremes of wet and dry. There may also be a requirement for shallower working ahead of a new drilling regime, a weatherproof finish for later or spring establishment, or to selectively target areas of compaction to combat damage from the last spring. On heavy land, operators may be looking to a ‘hard reset’ with a subsoiler. Horsch UK general manager Steve Burcham suggests most heavy land farms will have a rotational subsoiling plan in place. “Where a disc and tine combination has been used, heavy land can dry out and get cloddy on top, or if the land has just been very wet, it is a good idea to subsoil.

Weapons of cho “At other times it may be necessary to only treat certain areas, such as the headlands and where heavy tractors and even balers have caused compaction. It is common to subsoil the tramlines as well, unless you are in a CTF system.”
Guide Sumo technical specialist Rob Shepherd says soil quality should be the guide. “Looking at last autumn and the unpredictability of the weather, I believe it is more important than ever to take care of your soil. “If your soil structure is good you
can get on the land quicker after adverse weather. “I would recommend using a subsoiler with low disturbance legs early on, giving the land chance to drain before using strip-till seeding. This method lowers your input costs and improves the root structure, which can boost yields.” Another occasion to get the subsoiler out, Mr Burcham suggests, is when taking on a new parcel of land, where the compacted areas may not be obvious in the first season. He says: “Expanding farm businesses may subsoil the whole
acreage they are taking on and then work shallower and more selectively in subsequent years.”
Subsoiling However, subsoiling may decline in popularity as fewer growers establish oilseed rape, one crop which really benefits from deep loosening and is often sown on the subsoiler, he says. Rob Shepherd says that, overall, Sumo is seeing a reduction in subsoiler sales. “The reality is if you are looking after the soil, less subsoiling is needed. Farmers are using the FGinsight.com

MACHINE VERSATILITY THE need for implements to handle trash depends on the rotation, as crops such as beans produce fewer residues. Mr Burcham says: “Due to black-grass issues, we are seeing fewer customers relying on wheatOSR-wheat rotations, so they will have a wider range of crops to consider.” Cover crops are also increasingly becoming part of the soil working equation, although Mr Burcham says it would be unwise to see them as a stand-alone solution. “We cannot rely on frost to kill them off so we need to use glyphosate, which could be an issue in the future.”
For flexibility of cultivations, Mr Burcham says a disc and tine combination is a good choice. “Look for an implement which can deep loosen, but can also be adjusted to bring tines up shallower and where discs can be taken out of work or put in as needed, including to incorporate cover crops.” Mr Shepherd says the popularity of implements with interchangeable legs to either subsoil or shatter the pan is reflected in Sumo’s sales, with more versatile machines increasingly popular. “Cultivation machinery is more versatile than ever. Take the Sumo

root structure when compared to conventional combination drilling methods.” Versatility is enhanced by the ability to adapt the implement for different working depths. Mr Burcham reports a significant move towards hydraulic implement adjustment. “More than 80 per cent of our cultivators are now specified with hydraulic adjustment, making it easier to adapt the machine quickly and easily to changing conditions and ensure you are always working at the correct depth.”

CHANGING TECHNIQUES THE shift towards non-inversion establishment continues as farmers look to cut costs and boost soil health, but the success of no-till operations can sometimes be jeopardised by poor soil conditions, says Mr Burcham. “A straw rake may not move enough soil, particularly where straw has been chopped and you need to mix it in with soil, where shallow work with a tine is more effective.” A popular technique for mintillers in Europe and increasingly adopted in the UK is using a short disc cultivator for primary cultivations followed by a deeper tine to loosen immediately before drilling, he says. “But bear soil type in mind. For example, you do not want to go in too deep where there is a lot of stone.” The short disc cultivator is also popular for seedbed preparation where the plough is in the rotation. “Farmers with heavy land look to be moving away from the plough as it can be hard to work if it dries out, although it can be useful to take advantage of blackgrass dormancy in a dry June and bury the seeds, whereas in a wet year it is better to get it to chit.” The panacea for bigger farms is to have a short disc cultivator and a tined implement, he says. “Where the weather conditions look set to deteriorate, this set-up allows you to prepare the ground with the tined cultivator in autumn, 14 | NOVEMBER 2020

MACHINERY AND TRACTOR Boston-based Scotts Precision Manufacturing has seen a gap in the market for converting older Grimme GT170 trailed potato harvesters into windrowing machines. Geoff Ashcroft finds out more.
New life for old harvesters
A
ccording to Scotts Precision Manufacturing, windrowing potatoes has many advantages. It can create space when opening up headlands, it affords quicker trailer loading and can reduce crop damage by filling the harvester to avoid roll back on the main web. However, its adoption among UK growers has been a slow and gradual process, as Derek Scott, managing director of Scotts Precision Manufacturing, explains. He says: “We are in a market that has shifted towards self-propelled bunker harvesters and that means traditional lifting with several tworow harvesters is becoming less and less attractive. “Yet for those still lifting with a trailed two-row harvester, such as the popular Grimme GT170, there are considerable benefits to be gained from windrowing.” He says pre-topping ahead of lifting has also helped the practice, by removing haulm well in advance of lifting. “All the haulm needs to be removed when windrowing, as the higher volume of trash can cause problems when harvesting,” he says. Mr Scott was approached a couple of years ago by a potato grower who had tried several windrowing systems, but was disappointed with the
conveyor design and the overall performance on offer. “We were asked if we could look at converting one of the customer’s GT170s into a machine suitable for windrowing,” he adds. “It was not a straightforward process and the machine we started with was a basic-spec harvester with limited cleaning capability. The whole machine needed a lot of supplementary work to make it suit his system.”
Solution Mr Scott’s solution was to design a cross-conveyor which could bolt onto the GT170 as a direct replacement for the elevator system. His logic was to allow the two lifted rows to be moved gently over the pair of rows adjacent to the harvester, so they could be deposited into the centre of the next pair of rows, further over. “Windrowers have tended to use a short conveyor across the back of the machine. So if you open a field up and just move four rows – two on the way up and two on the way back down in an anti-clockwise loop – there is not quite enough room to sit a trailed harvester and trailer where those four rows once were,” he says. “The harvester elevator would have to be almost vertical, leading to fall damage, and the outside trailer wheels would nip the rows waiting to be lifted.

BENEFITS OF WINDROWING USING a machine such as the GT170 two-row trailed harvester as a windrower allows two rows of potatoes to be lifted and gently placed in the valley between two untouched rows. When these rows are lifted, the harvester tucks into the equivalent of four rows of crop. So a greater volume of potatoes go into the harvester, with the advantage of speeding up the lifting process while keeping a higher volume on the webs to help reduce crop damage. Trailer loading is also faster. Windrowing
“You really need to move six rows, to open up enough space to work. Our conversion allows you to move eight, by moving the second set of four rows in a clockwise loop.” It stands to reason then, that a wide, sliding cross conveyor would unlock the potential for better harvesting logistics. “We needed a cross-conveyor that offered enough operational flexibility to move the lifted crop over a much greater distance,” he says. “So we settled on a 5.3-metre conveyor, which has given the side-shift required.” The five-section conveyor can be folded for transport and also includes two end sections which can be raised and lowered, to manage the drop

So productivity will increase.”

until the harvester arrives, so the process of lifting crop from the ground can start sooner. When the two-row trailed harvester starts lifting, it is working in a much heavier crop which means webs are filled and damage from roll-back is minimised.” The £20,000 bolt-on kit comes fully assembled with all hydraulic hoses and cables for direct connection to the host harvester, picking up on the GT170’s existing elevator fixing points. This makes it easy enough to remove and refit the elevator, if needed. The Scotts’ conversion also sees functionality integrated into the Grimme control box. The heightadjustable end sections are controlled by the original elevator swan-neck up/down controls, while a diverter
valve, controlled in-cab from a toggle switch, sends hydraulic flow from what was the main elevator, to power either the cross-conveyor or its side-shift function. When windrowing is done, the cross-conveyor folds within the harvester’s width for transport and built-in safety features prevent accidental conveyor folding. “We have developed this windrower conversion kit to be as integrated as possible,” says Mr Scott. “It looks part of the existing machine and when customers want to revert to the original harvester, it simply unbolts allowing the elevator to be refitted.”
First conversion Reflecting on his first conversion two years ago, he adds the track width was wrong on that first low-spec harvester and needed converting to 72in centres to provide adequate machine stability. “We manufactured new wheel rims for narrower tyres but with a generous offset, so the harvester could follow the tractor,” he adds. Having now converted a second GT170 for the same customer, but starting with a higher-spec machine complete with a digging web and a Windrower controls have been integrated into the Grimme control box, with the exception of a diverter valve.

MACHINERY AND TRACTOR With an ageing machine the weak point in the logistical chain, a change of plan was needed for Greens Farming’s beetroot campaign, prompting it to purchase a brace of Dezeure reverse tip trailers. Alex Heath finds out how they are performing.
Reverse tip trailers aid logistics
F
or Greens Farming, the logistics involved in moving 728 hectares of beetroot from fields around East Anglia, back to its base near Soham, Cambridgeshire, has meant two specialist trailers are now employed. Greg Colebrook, director of the farming enterprise, says transporting the beetroot crop, which makes up a third of its total cropped area, has always been a challenge. And with ageing machinery and closer scrutiny of tractor-trailer operations, a new solution was sought. Mr Colebrook says: “Transport on the road is a big concern in the area, hence why we choose to use HGVs to ferry most of crop from the fields, grown in a 25-mile radius of Soham, back to the base. That means we need a way of getting the beets from the field and into the trucks. “Previously, we were using a Miedema cleaner loader, but it required a decent sized concrete pad, a man operating it, a loader to receive soil and clean around it, plus it was a slow method, needing three or four trailers to keep the harvesters running while they unloaded. significant time to pack up and move it, so when it came to the end of its useful life we looked at our options. “Another cleaner loader was considered, however, we saw the Dezeure trailers at the LAMMA Show in 2016 and could see the benefit of them in our operation.”
Belgian-made And so, in 2017 the farming business purchased a pair of Dezeure TransD20 overloading, reverse tip trailers. Belgian-made, the trailers are novel in their unloading method. Unlike conventional trailers, which pivot at the rear, the Dezeure overload trailers lift at the rear, allowing them to load over the side of an artic trailer. “The operation is now much quicker and more efficient,” says Mr Colebrook. “The trailers have a 20-tonne capacity and came fitted with greedy boards. With most of the beetroot grown on black fen soil that needs protecting and the risk of overloading lorries, we took the greedy boards off. It is of no benefit if one trailer unloads 20t and the other only 10t, then has to wait for the next lorry to come. Removing the boards has left us with 15t of capacity and enough crop that two trailers unload to fill one lorry. “The process is quick. They draw

on to a track or hardstanding, lift the trailer up, reverse to the lorry and discharge the crop in about eight minutes. They have the ability to discharge in two minutes, but there would be no cleaning advantage to be had. “We have managed to cut the number of staff needed to transfer the crop from field to road from six to two,” says Mr Colebrook. “The price of the two trailers was comparable to a new cleaner loader, but we would still require the same number of trailers and staff in the field, so the long-term cost benefit is greater with the trailers.” Mr Colebrook adds that the trailers spend most of their time
ferrying from the company’s Dewulf Kwatro self-propelled harvester, which works well with its 17.5cu.m bunker. They also keep the company’s modified Grimme GT300 trailed harvester on the move as well. Trailers are pulled with a range of tractors. In the first year a John Deere 6155R was used, however, slightly larger machines are now used, including a 6175R from the same manufacturer and JCB 4220 Fastracs. The harvesting campaign is about six months long, starting in June and running through to November. Conditions towards the end of the campaign can deteriorate, says Mr Colebrook, however, the relatively small tractors are up to the job, thanks to the trailers’ driven axles.
Weight Military grade axles, the same as found on MAN’s military trucks, bear the weight and spread it over four 710/50R30.5 tyres with chevron tread pattern. Hydraulically driven from the trailer’s on-board pto-powered oil pump, drive is engaged via a clutch system which is controlled from the Secutouch in-cab terminal. The pto pump also provides oil for most of the trailer’s functions, including lifting, floor conveyor and cleaner. The rear door is operated from a spool. The trailer also has hydraulic suspension on the drawbar and axles which are self-levelling, as well as a rear steering axle. A camera at the rear gives the operator a view of the waiting trailer

Fitted at the rear of the trailers is a Grimme-derived TurboCleaner, similar to those found on the German firm’s graders. Made up of 13 plastic spiral rollers, these spin, turning and propelling the crop in the trailer underneath. The distance between the rollers is adjustable to take out larger debris. A belt runs below the rollers, catching the soil and depositing it into a box on the trailer’s chassis, which can then be hydraulically dumped when the trailer returns to the field. The cleaning system folds vertically when not in use. Crop is removed from the trailer using chain and slat conveyors. Mr Colebrook says damage to the beetroot is not a major concern. “They are a low dry matter crop, so do not bruise easily, unlike potatoes. 20 | NOVEMBER 2020

“I would be concerned using this method of transfer with potatoes, without some sort of fall breaker. “However, with various outlets for our beets, including processed and washed, sized and graded fresh product, we do everything we can to keep it in as best of condition as we can. This includes trying to regulate the flow of beets over the cleaner so they are one layer thick to clean them effectively and prevent scuffing.”
Issues Mr Colebrook adds the trailers have performed well in the three years the company has run them, with few issues to report. Other than electrical problems when they arrived, which he says were promptly dealt with by the factory in Belgium, they have been reliable and described as bombproof. The only other modification the company has made to them is removing the grouping belts, allowing the full width of the cleaner to fill the trailer as the HGV trailers could become overloaded as a result of filling the corners too much. “The trailers have definitely increased our in-field efficiency and overall logistics, reducing the number of machines in the field and staff needed to get the crop into road-going vehicles. In addition they tread lightly on the soil, helping to maintain its integrity, but have the ability to push through the sticky patches thanks to the driven axles,” says Mr Colebrook.

s spray tanks go, an 8,000-litre self-propelled sprayer is erring on the side of generous. For H. Collins Farms, based at Hall Farm, Kislingbury, Northamptonshire, the arrival of an 8,000-litre Agrifac Condor Endurance II has created the opportunity to be much more efficient. Not that the farm’s previous self-propelled sprayer was tardy. According to farm foreman Dave Merrill, the outgoing John Deere R4040 could see off 240-280 hectares, albeit in a very long day without bowser support, despite a modest tank size of 4,000 litres. Mr Merrill says: “It is surprising

how much time you can lose when having to refill. Having a bigger tank now means fewer fill-ups, though we do need to be better prepared to keep fill times to a minimum.”
Performance Having notched up in excess of 900 hours and more than 12,000ha of application work in its first 12 months, Mr Merrill is so far pleased with the Condor’s performance and productivity. “We have had a few teething troubles and our relationship with Agrifac got off to a rocky start,” he says. “But they have got much better with response times and problem-solving and the sprayer has now evolved into

an impressive piece of kit that has bought us time.” The farm operates on 36-metre tramlines, but with rolling countryside the need for more power to accompany the bigger tank was a must have. The Cummins-powered Endurance II packs 405hp and is affectionately described as adequate. It is faster on the road too, reaching 60kph and surpassing the old sprayer’s 40kph peak speed. “Travelling back to the farm to fill-up is now much quicker and it is comfortable too,” he adds. He says speed and power are proving beneficial on the farm’s steeper ground. “I do have to be mindful that I do not travel too fast going up our steep slopes. It just keeps pulling and pulling. Where the R4040 would be revving flat out to reach 10kph on a steep gradient, the Endurance travels around 75 per cent faster and at lower revs – typically 1,300-1,400rpm. “Output is much more consistent and fuel burn is only marginally higher, despite the step-up in performance. “The Agrifac burns 1.25 litres/ha against the Deere’s 0.75 litres/ha – it is a small price to pay for the extra capability.” His initial concerns of stability from moving to a larger, heavier sprayer have been laid to rest, given the way the machine rides. “There is no leaning or twitching from the seat, it just sits rock-steady,” says Mr Merrill. “Overall balance is good and there

is the ability to tweak wheel track widths on-the-move, from the cab. For such a big machine, it is incredibly stable.” The issue of overall weight is managed by 650/85 R42 Michelin AxioBib 2 tyres, allowing inflation pressures of just 20psi. For row crop work, a set of 480s are used and with the help of a Sprayer Jack, safe wheel changes are contained to within two hours.
Comfort “I initially looked at a 6,000-litre Agrifac to keep weight down, but it made sense to opt for 8,000 litres – the counter-argument was that you do not always have to fill it. But the Agrifac rides so well on its 650 tyres and makes less mess than our old sprayer, so it gets filled to suit our blocks of land. “At 100 litres/ha, a tankful will cover 80ha and it takes about two-and-ahalf hours to empty, compared to 90 minutes with the R4040’s 4,000-litre tank,” says Mr Merrill. Furthermore, its performance and capability has not yet required a very long day in the cab. “A modest 12-hour stint will see 300ha covered easily. There is now FGinsight.com

Collins Farms has recently improved its focus on block-cropping to streamline all aspects of machinery management. Field sizes extend from one up to 121ha and when it comes to liquid applications, Mr Merrill has strategic water points at multiple locations. “We do have a bowser for outlying areas and the plan is to create an induction and can washing system to fit the bowser,” he adds. “I would like to premix and then top-up with water to make the most of the high-performance three-inch fast-fill, which can load 8,000 litres in just five minutes. “So when we get to complex tank mixes, having a premix capability is where we will really make up time.” He says that complex mixes with the previous sprayer could take up to 45 minutes. to and from fields, Mr Merrill thinks an hour could have been easily lost. “The Agrifac could cover 40ha in that time,” he adds. For all its fire-power, the Endurance II also packs a good technological punch. H. Collins Farms wanted to future-proof its investment and increased the specification accordingly. The sprayer arrived with pulse width modulation (PWM) and a second induction hopper was installed in the top of the spray tank.
Fill station “There is a load platform behind the cab big enough to take a pallet and it makes sense to have a second fill station up there with it,” he says. “For everything else, the standard induction hopper that sits below the cab is ideal for filling.” His experience of PWM is proving to be a big step on from his previous sprayer’s seven-sections, with auto start-stop. “I have noticed a slight reduction in field sizes from reducing our overlaps, though turn compensation is superb,” says Mr Merrill. “We are now getting an improvement in crop canopies around poles and trees, where crop growth is no

longer impacted from getting either too much, or too little spray.” He says the boom’s height control and contour following is equally as capable. “I was expecting the boom to dive towards the ground in oilseed rape and beans, but it reacts quickly and accurately to any patches or changes in crop cover. I also have total control of the application process from the in-cab terminal,” he says.
“It is fully customisable and a delight to use,” he adds. “Though, the palm pad controller on the armrest needs backlit buttons to simplify control at night. And when you turn the ignition key off in a dark shed, there is no courtesy lights or go-home lighting – disappointingly, you are in the dark for the climb down from the cab. If they could sort that out, there is not a lot left that needs improving,” Mr Merrill says.

MACHINERY AND TRACTOR Building machinery for local agricultural needs lives on at W.E. Scorgie and Son in Angus, Scotland, where sprayers are produced to order. Jane Carley reports.
Built for purpose T
he Scorgie family-run business was founded in 1967, when the family moved to Balrownie as the late William E. Scorgie took over the ‘smiddy’, which provided the opportunity for him to make his dream machines a reality. ‘Auld Wull’ was a self-taught agricultural engineer who always strived to make farming more efficient, says his son, ‘Young Wull’, who joined the family business in 1977. Initially the pair focused on designing and building single row stone separators, before developing two- and three-row machines which were manufactured and sold under licence by Root Harvesters/Hestair Harvesters at Peterborough. In 1989 the Scorgie Root Crop Cutter was developed, latterly made under licence by Ritchies of Forfar. The company also diversified into the production of hydraulically operated folding spray booms for local farmers and contractors, their design allowing one boom to be folded in while the other boom stayed out remaining perfectly level. Will Scorgie junior explains: “This was necessary for potato growers wanting to spray around the edge of the field. “We have since expanded the range up to 30 metres. With trifold booms a little more engineering is required, but the design is essentially the same.” Local farmers then began to ask if the company could produce complete sprayers. Due to the terrain, a mounted design is the most
suitable and, to cater for increased capacity requirements, front tanks were also offered. “The two tanks can be controlled and operated separately. As well as offering more flexibility, it is also more reliable, as it is easy for sensors to fail where the tanks are operated as one unit,” Mr Scorgie explains. Plastic tanks have allowed for ever greater volumes to be carried, up to 1,900 litres at the rear and 1,500 litres at the front, while a special build using steel tanks from Watson and Brookman gave one customer 4,600 litres total capacity.
Single side fold was an early unique selling point for the Scorgie sprayers.
Improved In the days of sulphuric acid spraying, Scorgie also developed saddle tank sprayers, some of which are still in use and offer improved balance on hilly ground as well as good rearward visibility, although exhaust layouts make it difficult to fit them to modern tractors. Demounts are another line, with several sold for Multidrive skid units and the JCB Fastrac. The manufacturer’s distinctive orange-boomed sprayers are all bespoke, built to suit the requirements of customers who tend to be looking for a durable, manoeuvrable outfit to work on root crop ground and are largely based north of the border. The company also exhibited at Sprays and Sprayers in its Cambridge days, and Mr Scorgie reports a recent enquiry from a vegetable grower in Somerset. He says: “We have had to move forward with modern technology and

fit ARAG controllers, we also have the Mueller distributor, with Soil Essentials just down the road is able to supply their products as required.” Entirely family run, the company has won multiple awards at the Royal Highland Show over the years, but the focus remains on building the right machine for the customer.
“The business is just myself, my wife who looks after the accounts and our children, and we produce less machines these days as there is more involved in the electronics side, but we have adapted our sprayers to the latest technology such as GPS auto-shut off to meet our customers’ needs,” says Mr Scorgie.
W.E. Scorgie has carved a niche as a supplier of specialist sprayers, mainly for the potato industry.

Orr sprays 10,000 hectares of peas and beans for East Coast Viners, along with cereals and grassland work in a 60-mile radius of Wardmill Farm, near Forfar. The company operates four Scorgie 28 and 30-metre mounted sprayers, the latest of which has 4,600 litres capacity from front and rear tanks, supported by three Vegcraft bowsers. Partner in the business Gavin Orr explains: “The 8,000ha of peas get two applications while the 2,000ha of beans get a pre-em and five applications of fungicide to tackle aphids, bruchid beetles and chocolate spot. We also apply liquid fertiliser to cereals and grassland.”
Reliable With this workload, it is important to have reliable sprayers with local back-up, he comments. “We did consider a self-propelled sprayer when we bought the 4,600 litre model,” Mr Orr says. “Instead we prefer to use our John Deere tractors for spraying

which you cannot expect from a self-propelled, and if a tractor goes down we simply swap it.”
IN THE FIELD TURRIFF CROP protection business A.C.T. Scotland runs its own sprayers from its base near Turriff, as well as using contractors, and its most recent Scorgie is a Fastrac demount unit. Agrochemicals manager Alan Joiner explains: “We had an old MB Trac which had a lot of hours on it and needed replacing, but since we also use the tractor for seed dressing, its successor also had to be a demount. “We have stuck with Scorgie as we find the single side fold very useful when spraying along fence lines, plus they are a local company that offers solid back-up.” He comments that the boom is strong and well built and one sprayer normally lasts for the lifetime of two tractors, so when the tractor is updated, it is a simple matter of re-bushing the sprayer booms and joints and fitting it to the new model. “The latest machine, which was built in 2017, has ARAG controls so we have full GPS for field mapping,” Mr Joiner adds. a 1,500 litre front tank added to make the unit comparable to a selfpropelled sprayer in terms of output. “When we were specifying the new sprayer, we asked customers if they wanted wider booms than
the previous 24 metres, but most were happy sticking with that width. We have added extensions for 28m if required, although the majority of work is still at 24m.” With the Fastrac tied up on seed
dressing in the early part of the year, Mr Joiner reckons to cover 3,400 hectares in the season with the Scorgie sprayer, mainly on cereals with a small amount of grassland work. NOVEMBER 2020 | 25
