MACHINERY AND TRACTOR The Fendt 724 has become the tractor of choice for operators at Stud Farm Contracting.

Eight years after its launch, Fendt’s 724 remains a favourite for many buyers.

But can it go the distance? One Essex contractor believes so, and his 8,000-hour model remains the firm’s go-to tractor. Geoff Ashcroft reports.

Buying with confidence

O

ver the last 10 years, brothers Charlie and Alastair Kruse have been gradually expanding their business, Stud Farm Contracting.

Based in Maldon, Essex, their firm carries out a variety of tasks, including contract farming, alongside general contract operations and, as the business has grown, so too has its tractor and machinery fleet.

While its tractor choices all stem from the Agco stable, colours are

mixed. Front line cultivations power comes from a 400hp Massey Ferguson 8740S, while general purpose tractors include a Valtra T254, Valtra T213 and a pair of Bavaria’s finest – a 2012-model Fendt 724 and a 2002-model 716.

Charlie explains: “Our Fendt journey started with a 9,000-hour example of a 714 complete with front-end loader, which was swapped for the 716 when I needed more power. I kept the loader and fitted it to the 716.”

He says the 716 was sourced through local dealer Crawfords, and was a one-owner, 4,000-hour model with full service history.

Serviced “The tractor had been really well cared for, regularly serviced and was known to the dealer,” he says.

“It did have a new transmission fitted before we bought it, so it never really looked like a risky purchase.”

That was 10 years and 10,000 hours ago and the 14,000-hour

tractor is still going strong. The key, say the brothers, is to keep on top of regular servicing and make use of genuine parts and filters, along with regular greasing. A recent dyno test showed the tractor is producing a very healthy 170hp at the shaft, and it has not been tampered with.

“We have been inside the back-end and done the brakes, and also replaced a turbo, but that has been the sum total of it over 10,000 hours in our hands,” says Charlie. “We have spent around £7,000 on it, so the 716 has been a very cost-effective purchase.

“It now spends its days on a post-knocker, so the plan is to run it towards 25,000-30,000 hours. We will probably change its oil at 250hour intervals instead of every 500.”

Such reliability has spurred the brothers on when it comes to managing depreciation and making the most of mechanical reliability. And in 2017, when they found themselves looking for more power, the brothers purchased a used Fendt 724.

“The 716’s original owner had moved up to a Fendt 724, and when it

came up for sale – again, a 4,000hour tractor available through Crawfords – we did not hesitate to buy it,” he says. “It was bought to replace our 14,500-hour John Deere 6920, and the 724 is now heading for 8,000 hours.”

Again, a documented service history combined with a trusted relationship with the local dealer saw the deal done.

It may be recalled that Fendt’s 700 Series made its first appearance at the 2011 Cereals event. The three-model range included 720, 722 and 724 models, with power outputs of 200hp, 220hp and 240hp respectively. All three shared a Deutz six-cylinder turbo engine with exhaust after treatment through SCR technology.

Up front, 700 Series gained a high-performance cooling pack that fits neatly into a narrow bonnet, helping maintain forward visibility.

But the stand-out design of the 700 Series was an all-new five-post cab, which included a panoramic front screen and full-length righthand window.

Called VisioPlus, the cab is carried on either mechanical or pneumatic suspension systems and offers

5.2sq.m of glass. Two spec levels – Profi and Profi-Plus – offered a range of integral options and the Profi-Plus specification, as seen here, gained VarioActive steering, a 10.4-inch Varioterminal, digital climate control, electric mirror package and guidance-ready.

“Our 724 was one of the early Profi-Plus spec tractors, and is very well-equipped,” says Charlie. “It has become the go-to tractor of all on the fleet, and it is favoured for its low weight, good power, ease of use, comfort and visibility. It is the tractor that everyone likes to drive.”

Tasks The 724 is clocking up 1,700 hours/ year on a variety of tasks for Stud Farm Contracting. A six-furrow fully-mounted Lemken plough, MF 2270XD big square baler, front/ rear six-metre Krone mo-co combination, 6m Vaderstad drill plus haulage with bale and grain trailers keeps the 724 busy.

“The 724 just eats everything we throw at it,” he says. “It never overheats on the mowers, and will keep up with hired-in Fastrac 4000s that we use for grain and bale haulage.”

Both Charlie and Alistair say that the Vario transmission takes some beating.

“It really is a peach to use,” says Alastair. “While there are those who consider the tractor to be complex, it is only as complicated as you want to make it. A little instruction before you start, and then it is down to individual operator preferences to drive with the joystick or the foot pedal.”

However, the biggest complaint comes from the 724’s panoramic front windscreen.

“We have lost count of the number of front windscreens that have been fitted,” says Charlie. “It has become something of a known issue, but nobody can explain why. We have had them just break while sat parked in the yard. And because it is a bonded curved piece of glass, we cannot move the tractor for 24 hours after replacement. The frustration here is that we will lose a day’s work when a screen pops.”

When it comes to fuel and DEF use, the 724 is as good now as it when it first arrived, and the only additional costs have been front tyres.

“The side walls were starting to split, so they have been replaced with

BKT rubber. Though the rear Trelleborg tyres are original and will probably make it to 10,000 hours.”

The firm has recently added an ex-demo Valtra T254 to the fleet, and the Smart Touch-equipped tractor has yet to win over the Kruse brothers and their team.

Alastair says: “It is our second Valtra, but it is not a patch on the Fendt 724. We swapped an 8,000-hour Fendt 820 for the Valtra, and while we looked at a nearly-new 724, the £30,000 price difference was too hard to ignore.

“That said, if we could find another 724 with the right hours, a full history and at the right money, that would be our first choice,” he says.

“Depreciation is a bitter pill to swallow, and it becomes much more palatable with older, high-houred kit – you just have to be ready for some slightly higher running costs.

Alastair says: “We are not afraid of big hours. We all provide traceability with crop assurance schemes, so why not with tractor servicing? As long as you know the tractor’s history, then you can buy with confidence – and a detailed service history from the dealer is vital.”

MACHINERY AND TRACTOR The Korean-built Kioti compact tractor may be a more familiar sight on the golf course, but for a Bedfordshire dairy farm it has proved to be more than up to the task of scraping. Jane Carley reports.

Kioti shows beef on dairy farm W hen W.A. Infield and Son’s scraper tractor broke down four days before Christmas 2018, it is fair to say they were in a bit of a predicament.

Farmed by Richard Infield, operator Julie Humphreys and brother-in-law George Saunders, Ouse Farm is home to 200 cows and followers, milking 120, and the family business is one of just eight dairy farms remaining in Bedfordshire.

Mr Infield says: “We had a relatively modern, albeit 11-year-old, compact tractor for the job and the gearbox went. We were not sure what we were going to do without it in the middle of winter.”

Buildings comprise 100 cubicles plus a straw yard and a new covered feeding yard, so there is plenty of concrete to scrape.

“The broken-down compact had itself replaced an old Fordson Major, but finding another traditional scraper tractor at short notice was not an option as their collectability has made them scarce and pricey,” he says.

its predecessor, the Kioti CK2810 is powered by a 3A193 Daedong three-cylinder engine and has a two-range, pedal-operated hydrostatic transmission with cruise control and power steering.

Mr Saunders says: “It is very easy to drive and manoeuvrable around the buildings, which is key for scraping.

Local dealer Farm Serve had demonstrated a Kioti compact on the farm earlier that year, although Mr Infield had not planned replacing his scraper tractor imminently and had not looked at any others. A phone call confirmed a 28hp version of the Korean-built tractor could be on the farm straight away.

by Suton Machinery.

“The tractor arrived on December 23 and we breathed a sigh of relief,” says Mr Infield.

needed 120kg of weights on the front to avoid being tipped back.

Mr Saunders adds: “We also

use the tractor to spray paddocks, so it is quite versatile and we are considering adding a yard brush to get even more out of it.

“Getting on and off is easy and the roll bar folds to different heights so we can drop it right down in our lowest building or have it partially up. Maintenance is also straightforward as the bonnet just hinges up after removing one pin.”

An indicator of the groundcare

Mr Saunders says: “They are pretty robust. We swapped the fronts for eight ply as the extra load from the brush meant we were getting a few punctures, but as it is mainly used on concrete there would be no benefit to cleated tyres. When the muck is slippery in summer, the four-wheel drive helps with grip.”

Warranty He acknowledges modern tractors do not have the ‘bulletproof’ reputation of the old classics, adding: “Being purchased new, it is under warranty, and it is well built. Compared to an older tractor, there is the peace of mind offered by good brakes and knowing it will start on a cold morning.”

Mr Infield says: “It has been very reliable and is a simple, effective scraper tractor. We use it every day and have put 760 hours on it in 18 months with just one service. It is a bonus that the tractors are assembled locally and the dealer is just five miles away.”

Adding chemicals to fuel to achieve a “different” or “desired” performance is a branch of the oil industry that goes back 100 years. It is not a new concept and need not be viewed with the scepticism that it is in some quarters. Only the very cheapest road fuels do not contain an additive “package” and, via the Worldwide Fuels Charter (see later), the majority of the world’s engine and vehicle manufacturers now prescribe the use of additives.

2019 And All That…

For many farmers and contractors in the UK, 2019 was a year you’d want to forget from a machinery operations standpoint. The fuel filter blocking issues that started in July proliferated for the remainder of the year and continued into the

early part of 2020. This was particularly the case if fuel was stored for periods longer than a month.

The cost to the industry was huge in terms of replacement filters and significant downtime. To say nothing of ill-will between end users and fuel distributors.

The Problem The root causes were never properly established.

The extensive work carried out by FAST, however, analysing over one hundred fuel samples and around fifty fuel filters, clearly points to elements of the much-increased volume of biodiesel component (FAME) dropping out. This was evident not only via blocked filters but also by the “scum” seen floating on the fuel surface within storage tanks.

Although probably likely to occur more readily at lower temperatures, the dropout can also occur at ambient summer temperatures. Additional work carried out by FAST clearly demonstrates that dropout and particulate accumulation and agglomeration worsens over time. The longer fuel is stored for, therefore, the more likely you are to experience a problem.

The Invisible Issue A critical finding of our work was that the problems are not always (in fact, rarely) visible to the naked eye. Even the poorest performing fuels in terms of filter blocking issues can look clear and bright.

So, What Was - And Are - The Solutions?

There is a need to stop the agglomeration of the unstable biodiesel components or, in cases where the problem already exists, to re-disperse the components into the bulk fuel. FAST initially utilised a high dispersancy/detergency product originally formulated for tank cleaning purposes.

This proved to be immediately successful and was adopted on a widespread basis throughout the fuel distribution industry.

Prevention Is Better Than Cure With this knowledge we moved to look at prevention. It became apparent that those farmers and contractors who had been using FAST’s regular use diesel and gas oil additives for several months prior to last year’s problems, did not experience any of the issues. exocet® Gas Oil Supreme, exocet® Gas Oil Conditioner and exocet® Diesel Supreme all contain sufficient quantities of the dispersant and detergent chemistries to hold the biodiesel in solution, or at least to keep it sufficiently dispersed so as not to result in filter blocking and fuel starvation issues.

FAME Is Not Going Away FAST continues to supply these products to those fuel users keen to eliminate the potential for future problems, which we know still exist. FAME has NOT gone away and already this summer we have seen and have dealt with sporadic repeats of last year’s filter blocking issues. Please don’t get caught out.

MACHINERY AND TRACTOR Four-cylinder ‘pocket rockets’ are prevalent on many farms, however, the first to break the 200hp mark was the 6718S from Massey Ferguson. Alex Heath speaks to one farmer who is making use of the high power-to-weight ratio tractor.

Multitasking Massey

W

hen Massey Ferguson released its 6718S tractor in 2016, it was the first four-cylinder tractor to reach the 200hp barrier.

In a compact 2.67-metre wheelbase, on paper it offered farmers a high horsepower performer that would be as comfortable in the field as in the yard. One farmer who took the opportunity of the 6718S’ credentials was Staffordshire-based James Madders.

The 325-hectare farm near Stafford sees 300 cows milked, with grass the predominant crop, although plenty of arable crops are also grown. The tractor arrived at the farm as a demonstration unit in May 2018 and remained after Mr Madders saw the advantage of the machine’s small stature coupled to its powerful motor.

He says: “It is a powerhouse.

to, it performs well, with plenty of power, enough weight and nimble manoeuvrability.”

The tractor has a power-toweight ratio of about 30hp per tonne and is the farm’s main workhorse, carrying out most fieldbased tasks and clocking up about 1,250 hours per year. However, a major consideration to its purchase

was its ability to step into the role of Mr Madders’ other Massey Ferguson tractor should it break down.

The tractor responsible for feeding the cows is a 6470 and, with some tight buildings, the farm’s second tractor is required to be nimble enough to navigate around the yard should the need arise.

Agile Mr Madders says the four-cylinder unit is agile in the yard and the field.

“We can get around all the buildings we need to. In the field, headland work is a breeze. With a tight lock, spinning around with the five-furrow plough is easy.”

The manufacturer says the turning circle for the tractor is 4.75m, which Mr Madders concurs with.

However, it is the power produced by the 4.9-litre engine nestled under the bonnet that is the tractor’s party piece, says Mr Madders. A neighbouring farm has the firm’s six-cylinder 7718S tractor, giving Mr Madders the chance to see if the two extra cylinders make a difference.

“Everyone who drives our tractor is amazed by the power it puts out, especially when swapping from the six-cylinder machine. To get the same power and a more compact chassis is a great asset, one that we really enjoy having on-farm.”

While the tractor turns its hand to a multitude of tasks, Mr Madders says mowing with front and back mower conditioners is when it comes into its own and the full power and torque is available. When mowing for second cut silage, Mr Madders says 50ha was dropped in nine and a half hours, using 190 litres of diesel and 10 litres of AdBlue which, by his reckoning, was pretty good going. The manufacturer says maximum power is 175hp at 2,000rpm with electronic power management giving a 25hp boost when pto, hydraulic or speed prerequisites are met.

The demo machine came fitted with MF’s Dyna-6 transmission, a 24 by 24 semi-powershift.

Mr Madders says: “I have not driven the Dyna-VT models so do not know what I am missing out on.

However, the Dyna-6 has been around for years and has a good reputation for reliability. I tend to leave it in auto mode and let it do the shifting for me, but if older drivers get on, they have the option of nudging the stick forwards and backwards if they want.”

So far, the tractor has been reliable, with just one fault occurring.

underneath the cab while I was ploughing, which stopped me from turning the plough over,” he says.

“Dealers KO Machines came out and sorted the problem, fitting a rubber hose instead.”

And while a linkage, pto and spool were fitted to the front of the machine, Mr Madders has piped a rear spool to the front, making it easier to pick up the mowers on the headland using the two mechanical spool levers to the left of the armrest. This is because the software does not allow for a combination of front or rear spools to be used with the spec-level the demo machine came with.

Comfort This generation of tractors was also the first to come with Massey Ferguson’s S Effect specification, said to offer increased comfort, service intervals and performance.

Spec-wise, Mr Madders says the Essential-spec tractor has everything he needs fitted, but he would have selected climate control over fans if he was choosing another tractor.

“The cab is a decent place to be, everything falls to hand, and having driven Masseys for a long time now, it is an easy platform to operate,” he adds.

For precision applications, Mr Madders has added a Leica Mini.

“It gets my fleet of six lorries and drag-trailers up-country, so they can bring back high quality hay and straw from around the country for our customers.”

Each harvest, the team heads east, pushing across Wiltshire and Hampshire for its regular customers, chasing straw in the swath. And helping to get the job done is a pair of JCB Fastrac 4220 tractors complete with Quicke 6M loaders.

“Putting a loader on a 220hp tractor adds an extra dimension,” says Mr Kidston.

“It takes reliance away from our telehandlers, and means straw carting on wet days can be done without additional labour and equipment.”

While both Fastracs operate primarily with Arcusin bale chasers, bale handling and trailer loading is also on the radar.

“We run three Loadalls for straw stacking,” he says.

“Two are nine metre machines, and one has a 7m lift height.”

Performance Happy with the performance of the Loadalls, it was concluded that the manufacturer’s Fastracs could also be useful to the business.

Mr Kidston says: “The Fastracs were bought primarily for their high level of operator comfort and, on that aspect alone, they deliver.

“Comfort overrides pretty much everything else when you are spending long days in the cab, chasing bales. Though they really should be 300hp to be properly on top of the job.

slows, you have to stop the tractor to engage low range,” he says.

“When you get back up to 30kph, you have got to stop again to shift back into high range. This is where extra power would come in handy, to help keep the wheels turning.”

Mr Kidston says in an ideal world he probably should have opted for Fendt 828 tractors equipped with loaders. But cost became a factor, which could not be overlooked.

“And it would have meant buying 3,000-hour Fendt 828s to get the cost in line with a new Fastrac,” he says.

“So I bought one Fastrac new, and one ex-demo, and they have been superb.”

About to start their third harvest, the two-year-old tractors have clocked 1,200 and 1,700 hours respectively, and still have the balance of a five-year/4,000-hour warranty remaining. He reckons the extended warranty gives peace of mind and should add value at trade-in, which is planned at four years of age.

heavy cultivations work, just bale chasing, haulage and some loader work, and so far they have been totally reliable,” he says.

“They work for 600-650 hours every summer and while it is hard work, I expect them to be 100 per cent available during that period.”

Dealer servicing is key, and getting back-up and support when away from home is equally as important.

“We do have access to some good dealers,” he says.

“RSM Beare is our local outfit, and Oakes Brothers takes care of us when away. It works well.”

The loaders are said to be easy enough to fit and remove from the tractors, and controllability of the loaders is good, using Quicke’s joystick.

“It would have been better to put the loader controls through the JCB joystick, but we were told it could not be done,” says Mr Kidston.

“But it is not a problem to our experienced operators.”

More of a challenge is the task of swapping attachments using the JCB Q-Fit carriage.

“Our tractors do not often switch between attachments in the same way that telehandlers do, and it is

just as well given the line of sight to the headstock,” he says.

“You cannot see down to the ground from the cab and this is hopeless.

“But as a supplementary loadertractor, it has become a very useful combination that offers speed and comfort for the main task – chasing bales. When the team cannot chase bales, having a loader available for each tractor lets one operator move bales from the headland stack onto a 45 foot trailer, and back to a yard for unloading.”

His tri-axle bale trailers are

handled using twin-axle dollies, which boost stability. Fully airbraked, he says safety and stopping capability is good.

“With a twin-axle dolly, the front corner of these trailers simply does not move when nipping through a gateway fully loaded,” he says.

“The twin axles soak up any undulations, where a single axle dolly would scare you. And we have seven axles for braking.”

Productivity Bales are stacked eight high in-field from the firm’s Arcusin bale chasers and, to make the most of productivity, each Fastrac’s Quicke 6M loader carries an MX Manubal grab, capable of handling up to four big bales.

Bales are either moved by Fastrac and trailer, or lorry and drag. And to improve versatility with European hauliers seeking a back-load with a curtain side trailer, one grab has been cut-down to allow bales to be placed three-high, inside a trailer for export.

“It is all about speed and efficiency,” he says.

“The three-bale grab suits covered trailers, but it needs care when lifting four bales off an eight-bale stack. It would not be so bad if the Fastrac’s front axle suspension was not so generous with its movement.”

He says that despite a 900kg

deck weight on the back of the Fastracs, and a front-axle lock for the suspension, handling four bales at a time does make the rear axle go surprisingly light.

“Our previous loader tractors were Deere 7530 and 6210R models,” he says.

“The 6210R was out of its depth, while the 7530 was nigh-on perfect.

It was so stable, and if it lifted a rear wheel, the colour did not drain from your face. The Fastracs are an entirely different proposition.

“We should probably put a threetonne block on the rear linkage,” he adds.

“But we do ask a lot from our equipment. For a farm wanting an occasional loader tractor, they would be ideal, with plenty of speed and power.

If you wanted to handle two bales on a spike, with one tonne of ballast on the rear, they would be unshakeable.”

As a bale handling solution, the ability to fit a loader onto the highspeed Fastrac is ticking many boxes for Saul Kidston and his team at Exmoor Hay and Straw.

“We will probably have another, but it would only need to come with the loader brackets next time,” he says.

“The amount of work these loaders have done means they will easily work through a change of tractor.”

MACHINERY AND TRACTOR Used CVT tractors can be cost-efficient for farmers who like the idea of the benefits such a machine can bring. Jane Carley and Geoff Ashcroft look at typical options.

What to look for in a used 200hp CVT tractor

C

ontinuously variable transmissions (CVT) are now a popular choice for what has become the ‘workhorse’ on many a farm – the 200hp tractor. And an increasing number of popular models are now available on the

second-hand market for a keen budget of £40,000-£50,000, for those not prepared to spend a six-figure sum on a new model.

At the lower price tag, tractors are likely to be first-generation higher powered CVTs, and this could see little in terms of extra

sophistication. Though do not let it put you off – they will still be a comfortable and convenient second tractor to newer models in the fleet.

Like all used machinery, there are a few things worth looking out for, particularly if costly surprises are to be avoided further down the

line. And a few pointers from those in the know could help you secure a well-cared-for example.

It would not be a CVT round-up without the stalwart of CVTs, Fendt, while Case IH, Deutz-Fahr, New Holland and John Deere have all left their mark on the sector.

FENDT INTRODUCED in 2006, the 820 Vario was considered a step forward from its 818 predecessor. As one of the first of the lighter-weight 200hp models, it used a 207hp Deutz Stage 3 engine offering generous torque.

Fendt’s CVT offered a two-range unit (low and high), with manual change between the ranges.

Standard specification was generous, including 50kph, air brakes, front axle and cab suspension, four spools, clever engine speed control, air conditioning and a heated driver’s seat. Options were few, but comprised front linkage and pto, plus a choice of wheels.

NEW HOLLAND PRODUCED from 2007-2011, AutoCommand versions of the T7040 are relatively rare, but the diligent buyer should find a decent example in our £40,000 budget.

It was replaced by the T7.235 in 2011, which brought a Stage 3b, 6.7-litre FPT engine, though it needed AdBlue. Expect nearer to 10,000 hours for £40,000, or up to £50,000 for a lower-hour example of the T7. Options worth looking for are front linkage and pto, 50kph and air brakes, plus good tyres to put the power down, preferably 650/710 R42.

T7.235 models also gained the Intelliview IV monitor and were often guidance-ready.

Both the T7 and the T7040 used the same four-range transmission to give a blend of hydrostatic and mechanical drive, taking the tractor from 0-50kph without interruption.

CASE IH CASE IH’s original CVT design came from Austrian manufacturer Steyr, acquired by Case IH in 1996. It was one of the first on the market.

The first of the firm’s CVX models in this power bracket came with the introduction of the CVX 1190 with a 6.6-litre Sisu engine, which evolved into the Puma CVX 195 introduced in 2009, featuring a Stage 3, sixcylinder 195hp CNH engine.

The CVT was made up of four mechanical ranges, with all range changes done automatically through a pair of clutches. Able to be changed on the move, range changes can be felt in use, but should not be aggressive or clunky.

The popularity and reliability of this tractor means many seem to be kept as a backup, though it means values are well-held.

Specification levels were generally high. Expect 50kph with air brakes,

Longevity “Oil and filters are cheap, but around 6,000 hours, budget for a transmission replacement. Find out as much as you can about how it has been looked after. A sympathetic operator is key to longevity, but a Vario transmission should be viewed as a wearing part.”

“Drive the tractor and check the brakes for noise,” he says. “If badly worn, they can also damage the transmission, as it all sits in the same oil. And those who ignore the filter bypass warning light are asking for trouble.”

MACHINERY AND TRACTOR DEUTZ-FAHR DEUTZ-FAHR’S more recent CVT model would be the 194hp (maximum power) 6190 TTV and buyers could probably secure a 2014/2015 model with high hours for about £40,000.

First introduced in 2012, the 6190 TTV offered an updated ZF transmission, which featured the Power Zero function, capable of holding the tractor and a trailed weight at a standstill – useful for pulling away on a hill without holding the footbrake.

Trailer stretch mode was another improvement, maintaining engine speed to run the pto for powerhungry jobs such as baling, but allowing the transmission speed to be maintained on a downhill gradient without using the brakes.

Richard Houghton, service manager of A.T. Houghton, says: “The ZF Ecomm box is a great transmission, but the electric parking brake needs to be checked and adjusted in the early stages of the tractor’s life to remain effective.”

A high standard specification included air braking and air cab suspension on all but the earliest models. They were also supplied ‘precision farming ready’ with the firm’s i-monitor screen.

On a tighter budget, the 223hp (maximum power) TTV 630 is also worth a look, although, given the age – it was produced from 20082011 – many will have high hours.

specification, this model used the ZF S-matic 240 transmission, available in two versions. The HD version was aimed at heavy draft work and the HS at high speed roadwork, with different software to produce 50kph at 1,250rpm on the latter.

JOHN DEERE AT this price point in the John Deere camp, options include the AutoPowr-equipped 7930 or an early 6210R, built at Deere’s Waterloo and Mannheim plants respectively.

The 7930 was produced from 2007-2011 and used Deere’s own continuously variable transmission, with the 6210R (2012-2014) benefitting from a ZF transmission.

The 7930 was powered by a Deere 220hp 6.8-litre common rail engine, while the 210hp 6210R used a Stage 3b power unit.

Expect to find a 7930 with 4,000-

5,500 hours for £40,000, although they are becoming increasingly rare; a 6210R with 4,500-6,000 hours would be closer to £50,000.

Early models of the 6210R were offered with the CommandArm armrest control and electronic spools as an option rather than today’s standard fitment, so this is worth looking out for.

Many gained front axle and cab suspension, and came guidanceready with headland management, with front linkages and ptos a less common option.

MACHINERY AND TRACTOR In search of greater versatility for livestock duties, one Nottinghamshire beef producer has swapped a loading shovel for one of Manitou’s latest pivotsteer handlers. Geoff Ashcroft reports.

Pivot-steer telehandler adds flexibility

W

ith 1,200 head of cattle to feed on a daily basis, plus bedding and mucking out, beef farmer James Burnett demands reliability, productivity and performance from all his machinery. And to get the job done efficiently, it is a workload which involves a pair of handlers, steered by himself and operator Andy Moses.

“We have been looking for more efficiency, more versatility and more performance from our machines,” explains Mr Burnett of the 200-hectare Burridge Farm, North Muskham, near Newark, Nottinghamshire.

“And while we have traditionally stuck with a combination of one wheeled loader and one telehandler, we have recently ditched our Case 621 wheeled loader in favour of a Manitou

Launched at the 2018 LAMMA Show, Mr Burnett had a strong list of requirements for his latest loader.

He says: “I wanted more speed, better agility and a greater lift height, but I did not want to be sat in the cab on one side of the chassis, and this is where the MLA-T has come into its own.”

Hours clocked Since its arrival on-farm in February 2019 from local Manitou dealer B&B Tractors, the MLA-T 533 pivot-steer handler has already clocked more than 2,100 hours.

Mr Burnett says: “We have had several Manitou all-wheel steer, rigid chassis handlers, and they have been great, but my own personal preference has always been to sit in the

middle of a loader and appreciate an all-round view.”

He says Burridge Farm has enjoyed a succession of wheeled loaders from Hanomag, ex-army Allis Chalmers, several Cats, a Hyundai and latterly, three Case models on the bounce.

“Wheeled loaders have always delivered on lift capacity, but they can be clumsy and numb in a covered yard.

The obvious trade-off is lift height and, given the constant swapping between attachments, buying a toe-tip bucket

would have only helped with lorry loading. We need to do more with both machines.

“More height for bale stacking and handling was also a priority, and I figured having more performance in a smaller package would also speed up our daily yard duties.

“If we could get similar performance from two telehandlers, we could improve what we do.”

Finishing about 5,000 head per year on a 90-day turnaround, Mr Burnett’s operation makes the most of vegetable by-products sourced from a number of local growers, supplemented by 70ha of maize plus grass silage, harvested and clamped by a local contractor.

Mr Burnett says: “Our daily workload is such that we do not have time to run the clamps during silage.

“While we have the firepower, our handlers are used almost exclusively for livestock duties around the yard.

“The MLT has just had all its tyres replaced after 18 months and 2,600 hours of use.”

The intensive beef finishing operation sees 100 tonnes of feed mixed and fed each day, with straw consumption, in the depths of winter, nudging 15-20 Hesston-sized large square bales each day to keep the covered yards clean and dry.

a Spread-a-Bale attachment on his MLT741, while Mr Burnett makes a start with ration preparations, with on-floor mixing of ingredients tossed around by the MLA-T533.

Both machines are then used with buckets to rehandle the mixed rations and distribute all feedstock to the different livestock groups housed in the yard.

Mr Burnett says: “Liveweight gain is everything, so time is of the essence to get through our daily feeding and bedding regime, which often takes up to four hours to complete, Once we have done the basics, we can turn our attention to other tasks.”

Large volume The predominantly grass farm makes use of manures where possible, but finds itself exporting farmyard manure to local growers, such is the large volume its livestock enterprise creates.

It is a task which sees muck often hauled by lorry and the ability to load over the side using either handler is now a huge improvement.

Mr Burnett says: “We just could not load muck using the wheeled loader, which meant loading was a onemachine task. But it is easy with the MLA-T and we can both get stuck in.”

a 40kph, CVT-type which uses two hydraulic motors powered by a hydraulic pump.

At low speeds, both motors combine to deliver tractive power comparable to a torque converter driveline, while higher speeds see the use of only one motor, offering fuel economy savings.

At the business end, the MLA-T 533 offers a 3.3t maximum lift capacity and a 5.2-metre maximum lift height.

Machine reliability has been rarely questioned. A failed spring in the hydraulic valve block was replaced under warranty and a headstock pin which had come adrift from the carriage has also been rectified by B&B Tractors.

Mr Burnett says: “I do not find the cab quite as comfortable as my Case wheeled loader. The position of seat and steering wheel could be better.

“More comfort would be better given I can spend six to seven hours per day in the cab.”

On a positive note though, he likes the convenience of the JSM palm-shaped joystick lever and its integrated forward-neutral-reverse rocker switch.

He says: “I can keep my left hand on the steering wheel, which is convenient. But swapping attachments is not always straightforward.

“Visibility to the headstock could also be better, as I find myself having

to put the loader on a lock to get a better view of the headstock.”

Mr Burnett has identified concerns about the MLA-T’s floor-hinged brake and foot throttle pedals, and it is an area Manitou is looking to rectify.

He says: “It is hard to keep the cab floor spotless in this environment, and we have had problems with debris, small stones and general muck building up beneath the pedal hinges.

“This can prevent pedals returning to their resting positions, which means either the engine will not idle or the machine thinks the brakes are on. In both instances, it just will not drive.

“The MLT 741’s suspended pedals do not suffer this trait.”

A key area both Mr Burnett and Mr Moses have identified is that of fuel consumption, and the apparent lack of it.

Mr Moses says: “We used to empty our 4,000-litre diesel tank every four weeks. But since we have swapped the Case loader for the second Manitou, we are now getting six weeks from 4,000 litres of diesel, doing exactly the same tasks. That is a huge saving, which represents about 14,000 litres/year.”

Topping up tanks is also another area where the two operators have been able to compare and contrast.

Mr Burnett says: “The AdBlue tank on my MLA-T will not quite last for two tanks of diesel, so every time I

refuel I have to top up the exhaust fluid or it will catch me out. Andy’s MLT will almost do three tanks per refill, so he spends less time topping up.”

Issues aside, Mr Burnett is pleased with his purchase, though its overall reliability and performance over three years’ graft and 5,500 hours at Burridge Farm are factors which will influence its replacement.

He says: “After years of sitting in wheeled loaders, I never thought the MLA-T would be as good as it is, although I could do with a bit more power now, and a little extra lift height.

A two-stage telescopic section would be really handy, too.”

MACHINERY AND TRACTOR With a 20-year history of running Valtra tractors, one Dorset contractor has chosen the Finnish maker’s flagship S394 model to handle his extensive operations. Geoff Ashcroft went to find out more.

Big Valtra is no onetrick pony R eliability is increasingly at the forefront of many a contractor’s mind. And it comes as no surprise, given the electronic complexity and emissions paraphernalia that today’s tractors bring.

Bernard Cox operates a diverse general contracting business that also takes on share farming and contract farming agreements with customers around Dorchester and Dorset, totalling several thousand hectares.

He explains: “We have had our fair share of breakdowns and hassles over the years but, lately, it has only been a few sensor issues rather than mechanical failures.

“Downtime is softened by choosing the most reliable kit you can and relying on the service and support of a knowledgeable local dealer,” he adds.

“And when we put our tractors to work, it is not just for a few hours here and there.”

It is a process that led him to Valtra ownership more than 20 years ago, but he admits the early offering was more functional and less involving for

operators. And while he has since tried many other makes, the business continues to revert to Finnish-form.

The Cox fleet is not an allinclusive affair. Hidden in the line-up of 11 Valtras are three Case IHs – a pair of Puma 185s and an Optum 300CVX. “We still look at other makes, but invariably end up coming back to Valtra,” he says.

Fuel “Fuel consumption does not vary that much between tractor types, but when you do get large variances in fuel consumption for two tractors doing the same job, it is usually the operator. A little training and guidance goes a long way.

“For 150-250hp tractors, we have found that the Valtras can run 10,000-12,000 hours with little problem – it is almost twice what we can get from other makes,” says Mr Cox. “And it happens without having to rely on costly extended warranties or swallowing expensive repair

bills. And that is very important for our business.”

This confidence in tractor reliability steered Mr Cox towards Valtra’s Beauvais-built S-series. His first S-series – an S353 – was bought to replace a Case IH Magnum and went on to clock up 8,100-hours in less than five years. Based on that performance, it was replaced two years ago by a more powerful S394.

“I had not the confidence to push the first S-series quite as far as we normally run our smaller T3 and T4 models, but these bigger tractors are certainly living up to expectations,” he says. “The T-series are easier to substitute at short-notice if something serious happens, whereas the S394 is more likely to be stood down while waiting for a loan tractor. This makes running them under warranty much more practical for our business.

It also fixes costs.”

Operator Rob Hallett likes the S394’s agility.

These bigger tractors are certainly living up to expectations BERNARD COX Mr Cox says the S-series was chosen for its ability to be much more than a one-trick pony and the current S394 brought a considerable leap in power to the contractor’s fleet.

“Tractor availability saw its replacement arrive much sooner than a factory-ordered model, which really suited us. We did not really need 400hp, but it has certainly come in useful this autumn with a big chain, to pull out tractors and trailers on maize harvest on the days it could not go drilling. And for a 400hp tractor, it does not look out of place on more regular tasks.”

The S394 shares arable duties with the firm’s Case IH Optum 300CVX, but operates with a 6m Horsch Terrano and a six metre Horsch Sprinter, leaving a smaller 5m Terrano for the lesser-powered Optum. While it could be considered overkill, the rolling Dorset countryside has confirmed that having a bit of power up your sleeve can be useful.

drilling, the S394 is also used to run a set of Claas triple mowers with grouper belts, and chasing Mr Cox’s three Lexion combines with a Case IH LB433 six-string 120 by 90cm large square baler.

Now, with 4,068 hours under its belt, the S394 is proving its worth for operator Rob Hallett, who has spent the last 26 years working for Mr Cox. “With groupers, the triple mower is heavy, but the weight of the S394 adds so much more stability to the combination, particularly on hillsides,” says Mr Hallett.

“I do find the Claas mowers to be power-hungry, though we can drop grass at speeds of 25kph using auto-steering, as long as the field size is reasonable.

“We have run the triple mower on a T234 Versu and, while there is enough power, the tractor is just too light to handle the weight of the mowers on steeper banks,” he says.

get gradually bunged up with dirt and debris, which then restricts the range of movement available.

“I do try and keep it cleaned out, but it needs a proper solution and this only happens when cultivating and drilling, never when mowing.”

He says the front axle suspension does give a smooth ride on and off-road and while the cab is not the quietest he has driven, it is not the loudest either.

“But where the S353 offered 0-100 per cent adjustment of hydraulic flow

rates, the S394 adjusts in 5 per cent increments. Sometimes, a 5 per cent shift in fan speed when drilling is just too much and I would like to see finer adjustment of flow rates through the terminal.

“Headlights need a rethink too, as we have extra lights by the cab, but you cannot fully isolate them to prevent dazzling other road users – so these get unplugged when I am on the road,” he adds.

Storage Mr Hallett has fitted a pair of additional storage boxes below the right-hand steps to supplement the tractor’s original, small toolbox. He

has also fabricated a bolt-on holder at the front of the tractor, where a grease gun and pry bar now reside.

“Considering the many jobs we do and the distances we travel, it is important to carry extra kit to help you,” he says.

Mr Hallett says that traction for the S394 has rarely been an issue.

The tractor arrived on Trelleborg TM900s, using 650/60 R34 up front and 710/75 R42 on the rear.

“We do raise and lower tyre pressures within the guidelines to suit and, when the opportunity arises, we will also add or subtract front-end ballast,” he says. “Though the rear wheel weights have yet to be removed.”

He says the increase in power over his previous S-series has been very useful and the performance of the engine has not had a detrimental effect on fuel consumption.

“The S394 is no better and no worse on fuel than the S353,” he says.

“So we are getting more work done on the same amount of fuel. AdBlue consumption varies, but when working hard, it needs topping up with every other refill of the diesel tank.”

Mr Cox says the Valtras are reliable performers.

Comfort While the S394’s spec includes reverse drive capability, current mower choice prevents this feature being exploited.

Mr Hallett adds that the S394’s cab offers good space and comfort, though the latter has been tarnished in the wrong conditions.

Stepless transmissions have gradually been adopted further up the horsepower ladder, as operators become used to their ease and efficiency. But what can a CVT add to the top load-lugging tracklayers? Jane Carley speaks to a convert.

Assessing the value of a CVT in a large tractor

D

avid Jones first encountered the Case IH Quadtrac CVX as a prototype in the USA in 2016 during a focus group visit and was able to get an idea of its potential at an early stage.

He explains: “We drove it with cultivators and drills, but also with land drainage equipment, which showed the expanded range of capabilities from the continuously variable transmission.”

Between that day and the arrival of a 543hp Quadtrac CVX 540 on his farm near Stratford-upon-Avon last year, Mr Jones says Case IH has clearly worked hard to refine the CVT concept. The result, he suggests, is a tractor which offers complete precision from a standstill to the chosen forward speed.

“Infinite choice of forward speed can be selected using the tractor’s Multicontroller and roller thumb switch – you get a steady progression from the start to your preset speed, which will then be maintained. On tillage work, it moves smoothly from the headland

In the CVX 540 we have enough power to go wider and shallower or work to depth if the soils dictate that DAVID JONES turn up to the set working speed – you do not even hear the drawbar pin click.”

With a Quadtrac 600 in the fleet on the 1,100-hectare Warwickshire arable farm for the past eight years, Mr Jones reckons he and operator Stuart Smith know how to get the best out of its powershift transmission, but can see a difference in the refinement offered by the CVX.

Its flexibility is proving to be something of a revelation, says Mr Jones.

“I can dial in a forward speed to suit the implement and soil type. So, for example, to use the 12-metre Vaderstad Carrier on a red marl bank or another patch of difficult land, just take the speed back by 0.5kph and it produces a finish that is ready for the Rapid cultivator drill.”

In automatic mode, the two throttle

controls can be used to find the ideal rpm for the task in hand, he says.

“By pushing the right throttle fully forward and the left throttle fully back to idle, the transmission will take the engine right up to full rpm and then back to the optimum. It takes a bit of getting used to, but is much better than trying to set the rpm limits.”

Improvement Road work has been another pleasant improvement. With neighbouring roads linking the M40 motorway to local towns and businesses, traffic is a headache.

But Mr Jones says the 540 CVX will ‘creep’ in traffic jams and then pull straight away from a junction to reach 40kph with no shifting. It also makes light work of some of the vertiginous banks on-farm, ‘it is a matter of just throttling back and letting the tractor handle it’.

Case IH’s decision to focus production on the smaller Quadtracs rather than offering an equivalent for his existing 608hp machine has not perturbed Mr Jones.

CVX 540 can do the same amount of work as the powershift Quadtrac 600. On the headland you can just ease back and there is not the gearshifts and steps. We also find there is less fatigue on the operator and implement.”

He adds that, given the improvement in soil structure on-farm achieved by switching to the low ground pressure offered by tracklayers in the last 10 years, tractors are not having to work so hard, so less horsepower is needed.

“But in the CVX 540 we have got enough power to give us the option to go wider and shallower or work

to depth if the soils dictate that, and still get the performance.”

Mr Jones admits he was sceptical about the 540 CVX’ lack of saddle tanks, which boost the 600’s fuel capacity to a massive 1,800 litres, but says it has proved frugal on fuel.

“If the job does not need a lot of power it does not use it. It pulls a 7m TopDown and is so much more efficient when turning on the headland and getting back up to speed; you just set the headland and working modes and select them at the press of a button or on the joystick.”

Control Going forward, he expects the CVX 540 to shine at drilling and planting, but still line up alongside the 600 to pull one of the farm’s two TopDowns.

Although it is a different CVT system to that used on the smaller tractors, ZF as opposed to Case IH’s home developed transmission, the control layout is the same as on the Puma CVX, which is of benefit when swapping between drivers at busy times.

“A new driver can start out on our Puma and once they are used to a CVT, move up to the Quadtrac.”

Tech support from James Green Farm Machinery’s Matt Bushell comes in for praise.

A number of other small updates have been made, including LED worklights all round.

“The dealer has 24 Quadtracs on its patch so they have plenty of experience, and although something like Accuguide steering is straightforward when you get used to it, having someone like Matt on the end of the phone is invaluable.”

The Quadtrac 600 has completed eight seasons and is still on its original set of tracks, and Mr Jones suggests current conditions favour keeping machinery for longer, so it is not up for replacement any time soon.

“There is no reason why it should not do 15 seasons. We are rigorous about maintenance and care as it helps retain the resale value and overcome depreciation.”

With two tracklayers in the fleet, 600 hours a year each would be typical, and he says having that level of horsepower in the armoury ensures timeliness.

“We need to do more work in fewer hours with less labour and in a difficult year it means we can cover the acres when the conditions are right. Last autumn we were OK until September 20, and all the land was prepared, so spring drilling was easier and we were not having to work wet land and risk damaging the soil structure.”

mole drained and land drain maintenance carried out, with soil pits revealing good soil structure.

“It underlined the value of going to a low ground pressure system and working in optimum conditions,” says Mr Jones.

Suitability The option of fallow and the opportunities for improving land drainage may also bring Mr Jones full circle – his father was a drainage contractor and the CVX 540’s obvious suitability for that type of work could see him take land drainage back in-house.

However, the continuously variable transmission does bring a price premium to the table, but Mr Jones says that when the increased efficiency, reduced wear on kit, lower fatigue levels and increased operator comfort are taken into consideration, it begins to justify itself.
