Das Mikrobiom in der Kunst The microbiome in art

Auf Kunstwerken und Kulturgütern leben unzählige Bakterien, Pilze und Mikroorganismen. Auch historische Gebäude haben ein charakteristisches Mikrobiom. Der mikrobielle Befall schädigt die Objekte, liefert aber auch wertvolle Informationen, die bei der Erhaltung und zum Schutz genutzt werden können. Auf diesen Erkenntnissen basiert das neue interdisziplinäre Forschungsprojekt „Pretty in Pink“ von Mikrobiologin Guadalupe Piñar von der Akademie der bildenden Künste und Bioinformatikerin Alexandra Graf von der FH Campus Wien. Countless bacteria, fungi and microorganisms live on works of art and cultural assets. Historic buildings also have a characteristic microbiome. The microbial infestation damages the objects. However, it also provides valuable information that can be used to preserve and protect the objects. The new interdisciplinary research project “Pretty in Pink” by microbiologist Guadalupe Piñar from the Academy of Fine Arts and bioinformatician Alexandra Graf from FH Campus Wien builds on these findings. Together with the conservator, Beate Sipek from the Academy of Fine Arts, the two researchers have been investigating the walls of two buildings since October 2021: that of the Virgil Chapel, an underground crypt next to St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna, and that of the Mauerbach Charterhouse in Lower Austria.
