Ben Smits wants to make the world a little cleaner. The Australian studied Packaging Technology and Sustainability at FH Campus Wien and founded a start-up. With his brand Effekt Footware, he makes sneakers from recycled marine plastic and waste from the fashion industry. The stylish Alchemy X, the first model from Effekt Footware, is a minimalist sneaker with a small ecological footprint. In the summer of 2021, it was possible to order the “garbageiest” sneaker in the world for the first time via the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter. The campaign was a complete success and the funding target was achieved in the first two weeks. Ben Smits and his team want to sell the sneakers in their own online shop and in select boutiques worldwide in the future. “However, we will stick with the pre-order model. This way we can avoid the risk of overproduction,” explains the start-up founder.

Plastic & Co Together with friends, Ben Smits had the idea in 2019 to create a shoe that would set new standards in terms of sustainability. “We looked at the sneaker market and thought we could do better,” says Ben Smits. “So we created a sneaker with a minimal carbon footprint that can be recycled at the end of its life cycle and whose manufacture eliminates more waste than is generated,” explains the founder proudly. The result, after 18 months of research and development work, is a sneaker made of 90 percent recycled material. The upper material, including the laces, is made from marine plastic and PET bottles. Recycled materials from old clothes and coconut fibers are used for the inside lining, and the outer sole consists mainly of rubber waste that is produced in shoe factories. The sneakers are handmade and manufactured in a family business in Portugal that uses renewable energies and is therefore CO2-neutral.
