Your health depends on it She hears it from her female patients all the time: “Oh, I can wait. My kids’ health is important, and I have to keep after my husband’s health,” said Amara Gill, MD, internal medicine physician Amara Gill, MD with Franciscan Medical Clinic at St. Joseph. “They try not to think about their own symptoms, hoping they’ll go away.” Dr. Gill said it’s important for women to pay attention to “little” health concerns before they become big problems.
“A mole may change; a woman starts having headaches; or her blood pressure starts running high. Worry can create added stress. The sooner we take care of issues like these, the better our treatment outcomes typically are,” she explained. Even if you are in good health, it’s important to see your doctor at least annually, said Dr. Gill. “If you have aches in multiple joints, notice lumps or masses, or feel fatigued, don’t write symptoms off as aging or stress. Mention your concerns so we can address them together and improve your quality of life.” Another important action that can help maintain health is exercise. “Women whose weight is under control think they don’t need exercise, but everyone needs exercise!” said Dr. Gill. “You will benefit, and be a great example for your family.” Other strategies to take to heart include: ■■ Annual well-woman exams. Treat issues before symptoms worsen. ■■ Daily exercise. An excellent antidote to stress. ■■ Daily multivitamin. Make sure you get necessary nutrients. ■■ Plenty of water. Can improve mental clarity.

New electronic health record brings dramatic benefits After June 1, Ed Lopez, PA-C, will have a slightly different routine when seeing patients at St. Joseph Medical Center. Mr. Lopez, an inpatient team medical provider, will now be recording patient health information into a computer in the patient’s room, not on a paper chart. It’s a seemingly small change that offers dramatic benefits to both doctors and patients. St. Joseph Medical Center, St. Francis Hospital, St. Clare Hospital and St. Anthony Hospital will all launch a new electronic health record system the first week of June. St. Elizabeth, which is already on an electronic health record system, will adopt the same system as the rest of the facilities in 2014. Franciscan Medical Clinics will transition to one electronic health record by the end of the year. The key to the new electronic health records is that each patient will have only one record or chart — no matter what doctor they see in the system. “The benefit of having just one record is that, over time, the medical history and the information in that patient record becomes much more complete and accurate
resulting in a more consistent and less fragmented source of patient information and treatment which then becomes available to all physicians whether in or out of the hospital,” Mr. Lopez explained. “Good information is essential for good health care. A patient’s medical history is unique to that individual and tells us a great deal,” Mr. Lopez added. “Too often we have to rely exclusively on the memories of patients or family members for important medical information. With this new system, if the patient has been seen within the Franciscan network of hospitals and clinics in the past, we’ll be able to call up their health record immediately resulting in accurate information.” Patients also will have quick access to their health information by signing up for the system’s secure, online Franciscan MyChart tool. Using MyChart, patients will be able to view their medical records, request appointments or prescription refills from their primary care doctor — even email their doctor. MyChart also will provide reminders of screening tests and other health information to help patients get not only the best in health care, but also the best in illness prevention.
Breast Center gets $2.75 million gift for 3D mammography The Gary E. Milgard Family Foundation has awarded a $2.75 million grant for the Carol Milgard Breast Center to provide tomosynthesis (also known as 3D mammography) to aid in the early detection of breast cancer. The technology will be installed later this year, making the center the first in Pierce County to offer this technology. The Carol Milgard Breast Center located in Tacoma is a partnership between Franciscan Health System and another local health organization serving the greater Tacoma area and surrounding communities. Franciscan will also install the 3D system at its mammography centers in Federal Way, Enumclaw and Gig Harbor in the next two years. To learn more, visit carolmilgardbreastcenter.org.

Mural embodies Hilltop community and St. Joseph history The new Medical Building at St. Joseph is hard to miss in the Hilltop community surrounding the medical center. To add to the beauty of the new structure, well-known community faces and icons are featured as artistic elements on the façade of the new parking garage connected to the building. Architect Perkins+Will and graphic design company Studio SC conceptualized and produced the beautiful artwork. Steering Committee members of the Peoples Community Center, which faces the mural on Martin Luther King Jr. Way, also offered valuable feedback on the concept, selection and final design. The imagery printed on a metal panel spanning the length of the garage features several past and present residents of the Hilltop community, such as former professional football player Fletcher Jenkins, as well as nuns from the original Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia – the order that founded present-day St. Joseph Medical Center more than 120 years ago. Take a moment to observe this one-of-a-kind artwork on your next visit to St. Joseph Medical Center.
Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology St. Francis Hospital, St. Joseph Medical Center, and eight affiliated physicians were named Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology™ (COEMIG™) designees by the AAGL and Surgical Review Corporation. The physicians who earned the designation performing surgeries at St. Joseph are Eve Cunningham, MD, Theresa Froehlich, DO, James Greene, MD, Cindy Mosbrucker, MD, Karen Nelson, MD, Paula Smith, MD, and Estelle Yamaki, MD. The COEMIG program distinguishes surgeons and facilities that demonstrate an unparalleled commitment and ability to consistently deliver safe, effective, evidencebased and coordinated care. “Women’s services have grown more advanced and specialized over the past 10 to 15 years. ‘Minimally invasive surgery’ isn’t just a catch phrase, it is a proven surgical option for women that will provide the lowest risk of complications along with fast recovery times. This award demonstrates both the physician’s and hospitals’ commitment to providing safe, high-quality care. We are truly raising the bar for the overall patient experience,” said Cindy Mosbrucker, MD, medical director for the COEMIG program.
Local doctors, hospitals partner to coordinate care for Medicare feefor-service beneficiaries Franciscan Health System has joined with Northwest Physician Network, an association of local independent community physicians, to form an Accountable Care Organization (ACO) to ensure Medicare Fee-For-Service beneficiaries in the South Sound have access to high-quality, coordinated care. Called Franciscan Northwest Physicians Health Network, it is the first ACO in the South Puget Sound area and the second in the state. Since the passage of the Affordable Care Act, more than 250 ACOs have been established nationally. All ACOs must meet quality standards to ensure savings related to Medicare Fee-For-Service beneficiaries through improving care coordination and providing care that is appropriate, safe and timely. Franciscan Northwest Physicians Health Network’s goal is to provide better coordinated care across physician offices and hospitals, better health outcomes and fewer hospital visits for our Medicare Fee-ForService beneficiaries. Beneficiaries using ACOs always have the freedom to choose doctors inside or outside of the ACO. To learn more, visit FHShealth.org/ACO or call 1-800-MEDICARE.

Your most important
to-do list
What women should know about health screenings You have lists for work, groceries and errands. But when do you ever put yourself at the top of your to-do list? The time is now: talking with your doctor about important health screenings is one of the most effective ways to safeguard your wellbeing. “Regular health screenings facilitate early detection and treatment of conditions before they become major problems,” said Karen Nelson, MD, Franciscan Health System’s division chief for Women’s Health and OB/GYN with Franciscan Women’s Health Associates in the new Medical Building at St. Joseph. “For example, cervical cancer has decreased 50 percent in the last 30 years in the United States due to routine Pap screening.” Here’s a closer look at why regular health screenings should be on your to-do list.
Feel fine? Health problems can still lurk Many screenings, from blood tests to Pap smears, can detect problems you may not know you have. That’s because many conditions, such as elevated blood sugar and cervical cancer, often don’t have any symptoms early on. “The good news is that most conditions are easier to treat in their earlier stages,” said Mark Behnam, MD, an OB/GYN who practices with Dr. Nelson at Franciscan Women’s Health Associates. 6
Franciscan Health System | Spring 2013
Heart disease in men receives lots of attention, but it’s also the number one killer of women. “Routine screenings can help identify risks, such as high blood Karen Nelson, MD Mark Behnam, MD pressure or high levels of cholesterol in your blood, which can lead to plaque in the arteries,” Dr. Behnam said. “Without the test, you may not know something is wrong until you suffer a heart attack.” If you catch it early with a routine blood test, you can treat it with medication and diet and lifestyle changes.
Put your health in your hands Health screenings offer you a barometer of how well you’re doing health-wise. When you receive the recommended screenings regularly, you’ll also be able to tell where you’re improving in your daily health choices — and where you could be doing better to stay on the healthiest path possible. “Yearly screenings provide you the opportunity to talk with your doctor about your health, symptoms, family history and risks,” Dr. Behnam said. “This gives you a better chance at staying healthy and avoiding certain illnesses that we can treat or prevent when caught early with screenings.”
Women’s health screenings It’s important to talk with your doctor about your health history and the screenings you need. Terry Coti lost more than 100 pounds after having gastric bypass surgery at Franciscan Center for Weight Management.
Nobody chooses to become obese. However, factors such as genetics, the food environment and our modern sedentary lifestyle are conspiring to make this potentially life-threatening condition an issue for more and more of us each day. 8
Franciscan Health System | Spring 2013
Fortunately, the Franciscan Center for Weight Management is ready to help patients achieve healthier weights. As a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence, we have the experience you can trust. More weight loss surgeries are performed here than at any other hospital in the South Puget Sound.
The Franciscan edge At the Franciscan Center for Weight Management, all weight loss procedures are done using minimally invasive techniques, including advanced laparoscopy and the DaVinci® surgical system. With minimally invasive techniques, surgeons can see into the body with great clarity, yet the incisions are smaller than ever before. Scarring is minimized, patient safety is enhanced and recovery usually happens much more quickly.
But what finally drives someone to get serious about a healthy weight through weight loss surgery? Haroon Anwar, MD, FACS, a surgeon at the Center, said each story is unique but a few common themes emerge. “Often, my patients see parents go through health problems, and they commit to becoming more healthconscious,” Dr. Anwar said. “They also get tired of taking multiple medications to treat obesity-related illness such as high blood pressure. They want to feel better.” Many want to get back to doing activities they once enjoyed or have yet to try, added Troy Houseworth, MD, FACS, a surgeon at the Center. “The weight has kept them off their feet, which has caused them to gain more weight. It’s a vicious cycle,” he said.
Are you ready to change? Whatever the reason people seek out surgery, weight gain that persists and causes a person to have a body-mass index of 40 or up — or 35 and up plus a comorbid condition such as diabetes — usually makes a person a candidate for weight loss surgery. A good first step, said Dr. Houseworth, is to come to a free, no-obligation seminar to learn about surgical weight loss options. “Patients get an overview of the different surgeries and learn for themselves which one fits them best,” he said.

Franciscan Center for Weight Management also offers effective medical weight loss, which includes guided weight loss, extensive nutrition education, and even group programming. No matter how much weight you have to lose, Franciscan is ready to help you achieve a healthy weight.

Life’s looking up again
Before
Terri Coty’s lifelong weight issue had worsened to 260 pounds. Along with it came arthritis, fibromyalgia, asthma, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and depression. The 58-year-old said she was on a downward spiral — until she researched weight loss surgeries and attended a Franciscan Center for Weight Management seminar. “I tried every diet,” Terri explained. “I would reach my goal, then something in my mind would say it’s time to eat again. But after the seminar and learning about my options, I was pumped up. I thought, ‘I can do this!’” After a brief, supervised medical weight loss plan prior to surgery, Terri had her gastric bypass
in November 2011. She reached her goal weight of 143 pounds at the end of September 2012 — a loss of 117 pounds in less than a year. Some other important numbers? Her dress and pant size dropped from a size 20 to a size 4. And her triglycerides fell from 302 to 64. But to Terri, one of her most important numbers is the circumference of her waist — because her family can now get their arms all the way around to give her hugs. Terri can also play on the floor with her grandchildren. Her co-morbid conditions have either resolved or improved drastically — including her mood. “My energy levels are through the roof. I’d do it 10 times over again!”

To learn more about Franciscan after-hours, ask your physician, a member of our care team or visit FHShealth.org/afterhours.
We’re always on call Our new after-hours service offers patients the future of telemedicine now Who hasn’t been there: You wake up in the middle of the night with a fever and a cough, a stomach virus takes over your household at midnight or a Janis Fegley, DO mysterious rash appears on your child’s leg right after bath time. Before, your options consisted of taking a trip to the emergency room or an urgent care Cliff Robertson, clinic or counting the MD, COO hours until your doctor’s office opens. Now Franciscan Medical Group patients have another choice. “With Franciscan after-hours service, care is available to our primary care patients who have medical issues that come up after office hours or when our Prompt Care urgent care clinics are closed, but the problem isn’t acute 10

enough to have to go to the ER,” said Janis Fegley, DO, a family medicine physician at Franciscan Medical Clinic – Canyon Road, and Franciscan Medical Group primary care division chief.
Quality care, quick service When you call any Franciscan primary care clinic after the clinic has closed, a team of physicians or advanced registered nurse practitioners are ready to care for you through a “virtual visit.” The provider may be able to treat you over the phone. “For example, they can call a prescription into a 24/7 pharmacy and you can get started on the medication right away,” Dr. Fegley said. In some instances, you may be able to video chat with the provider so he or she can see and diagnose an issue like a burn or a rash. “This service doesn’t replace primary care, but increases your access
to it,” said Cliff Robertson, MD, chief operating officer of Franciscan Health System. After your virtual appointment, the provider will e-mail a visit summary to both you and your primary care provider. “It is truly an extension of your relationship to your Franciscan primary care doctor,” Dr. Robertson said.
More money in your pocket Not only is the service incredibly convenient, it’s also affordable. “The cost is significantly less than the typical co-pay of an emergency room or urgent care visit,” Dr. Robertson said. Currently, this service is available to those covered by commercial insurance or without coverage for a $20 flat fee billed directly to the patient. Now you don’t have to wonder if that terrible cough or stomachache can wait until morning — we’re there for you whenever you need us — day or night.
The best care for our littlest patients All babies need loving, expert care to usher them into the bright, bustling world outside their mother’s womb. Some, especially those born very early or critically ill, need specialized monitoring and support. The Family Birth Center at St. Joseph Medical Center offers a complete range of prenatal, obstetric, delivery and post-partum care — even for fragile newborns — right here in the South Sound.
Neonatal intensive care at St. Joseph and Seattle Children’s partnership Through a new partnership which began April 1, 2013, Seattle Children’s Hospital neonatologists and neonatal nurse practitioners provide 24/7 care in the Level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) opening soon at

To make room for the NICU, St. Joseph has remodeled and expanded its Level II special care nursery. “For families, this means being able to get advanced care close to home,” said Peter Peter Robilio, MD Robilio, MD, maternal-fetal medicine specialist and medical director for women’s services for Franciscan. “Staff in the NICU can care for newborns who arrive as many as 12 weeks early or weigh as little as 2 pounds, 2 ounces. We can also provide respiratory services, such as ventilation for babies who need help breathing. Ellen Hu, MD These are real advancements in what we’re able to offer in our communities.” If your baby needs this high level of care, you can now stay together in the same hospital right here at St. Joseph Medical Center.
Get life off to a positive start The Family Birth Center at St. Joseph brings more than 3,800 babies into the world each year, making it the busiest birth center in the South Sound. Along with obstetricians, the center has a midwife team and a doula program. “Everyone at the birth center is passionate about providing expert, personalized care and making sure the mother and baby are safe and the entire family feels comfortable,” said Ellen Hu, MD, obstetrician and gynecologist at Franciscan Women’s Health Associates at St. Joseph. The birth center’s private labor-and-delivery rooms include whirlpool tubs for waterbirths, and the private post-partum rooms are spacious and comfortable. A mom’s support person has a place to sleep in the room with her, and her baby “rooms in” as well so they can bond and breastfeed. It’s all part of Franciscan’s commitment to provide moms with the birth experience they choose and give you the highest level of specialized family care you need.

Put your sleep problems to rest Do you often feel tired during the day? Do you sometimes nod off while sitting at your desk or talking to your spouse? You may think these signs are related to stress, but a sleep disorder could be at play. “Sleep makes up one-third of our lifetime,” said board certified neurologist and sleep medicine specialist David Brown, MD, who is also medical director of the St. Francis Sleep Disorders Center in Federal Way. “Inadequate amounts of sleep can affect your daytime functioning, alertness, attention and memory.” Insufficient sleep can also increase your risk for a variety of health problems, including weight gain, high blood pressure, depression, heart disease and impaired immune function, said Maria Lomarda, MD, a board certified primary care physician at Franciscan Medical Clinic at St. Joseph.
Breathe easier, sleep better “If you think you have a sleep problem, you may want to ask your doctor for a referral to a Franciscan Sleep Disorders Center,” said board certified pulmonologist and sleep medicine specialist David Shaw, MD, medical director of the St. Clare Sleep Disorders Center in

repeatedly throughout the night. The most common kind is obstructive sleep apnea, in which your airway becomes blocked while you sleep,” said Dr. Brown. If you have sleep apnea, a sleep specialist can offer treatment options such as continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). The machine’s mask fits over your nose and applies gentle pressure to help keep your airway open while you sleep. Patients who use a CPAP often report that they sleep and feel better very quickly. Experts at the Sleep Disorders Center also treat sleep problems such as insomnia, restless leg syndrome, periodic limb movement disorder, sleepwalking, narcolepsy and more.
Improve your sleep and your quality of life Some patients have the option of doing a home sleep study. Rather than staying overnight at the center, you’ll receive a kit to use overnight with items that record information such as airflow, blood oxygen levels and breathing effort. A sleep specialist can use this data to help diagnose an issue. “Sleep problems often go undiagnosed for far too long,” Dr. Brown said. “Treatments are available that can improve your sleep as well as your overall quality of life.”
