Editorial Lauri Mäntylä Esteemed reader, in your hands, you are holding a special issue of Fiba (pronounced /fehbah/), the quarterly journal of the University of Helsinki’s archaeology students’ society, published in English in honour of the Annual Meeting of the European Association of Archaeologists in Helsinki in September 2012. Published four times a year since 1990, Fiba has famously exercised censorship and rejected a submission only once during its history. The journal’s scope has thus ranged from scientific papers to interviews, correspondance from exchange students, travelogues, opinion pieces, media reviews, parodies, serial fiction, artwork, poetry, puzzles, numerous woolly mammoths and, in at least one occasion, flagrant incitement of nationwide scandal. This special issue features, for the benefit of the international audience of the EAA conference, a compilation in English of two of the journal’s longrunning series. Both may, for better or worse, serve as revealing introductions to student culture in Helsinki. The on-going comic strip (published since 2007 under the startlingly imaginative title ”Comic Strip”) follows the adventures of a pair of perfectly ordinary Finnish archeology students, Elli and Mira, in the parallel worlds of academia and fieldwork. Meanwhile, the series of lecture note cartoons by nom de plume ’Hillevi Hanuman’, first entitled ”Freshman Humour” in 2009 and quickly graduating to sophomoric humour, represents a penetrating exposé of the specifics of archaeological theory, education and practice. All stories are, of course, true. Lauri Mäntylä Editor-in-chief

Amidst the Conference Racket Katri Toivakka
G
reetings, dear reader! In my office as president, I wish to convey my warm apprection and gratitude to you for purchasing this journal and, in so doing, lending your support to the archaeology students’ society at the University of Helsinki, Fibula ry. Our organization was founded in 1969, and has since worked to draw together the students of archaeology in Helsinki. The events hosted by Fibula make up a central part of university life for students, particularily so during the first years of study, when university education and archaeology are only beginning to make some sense. Fibula has, for its part, helped to organize and execute the EAA conference in Helsinki, and many of its members are volunteering as assistants during the conference, manning the help desk and the book sale stands and overseeing the sessions. At the end of the conference week, on Friday 31.8. at 6 PM, Fibula will host a sauna night aimed particularily at students. More information is available at the EAA web page or by contacting representatives of Fibula at the information desk. With no further ado, I hope you enjoy this publication and have an interesting time at the conference!
