Kasey Smith and ReJOYce Ministries Are Praying for You K

asey Smith is the founder of ReJOYce Ministries, a local Christian ministry devoted to prayer. Smith herself is a prayer warrior; but, like many who walk strongly in their faith, she is not immune to a “dark night” that poses questions about what more she could do. Smith says her mission started a few years ago when she was seeking and struggling to maintain a regular “quiet time” with God. “I wish I could say I have always made prayer a priority and that not a day has gone by I have not spoken to God; but that is not the case. In fact, this ministry was started by my own conviction that I needed to pray more, and with more appreciation for its effectiveness. “The inspiration came one day when I was reading the story of Daniel—a story I thought I knew well. The Bible says King Darius signed a decree that anyone who prayed to anyone or anything but him for the next 30 days would be thrown into the lions’ den. Daniel broke the King’s decree, knowing he would perish in the lions’ den. God heard his prayers, and King Darius witnessed the saving power of Daniel’s God when He shut the mouths of the lions and spared Daniel’s life. Daniel’s commitment to prayer in all circumstances became a testimony to the King and to the whole nation.” Saddened by her own lack of commitment to prayer, Smith realized prayer is a currency that is quickly losing value. “It is so much more than a check on a to-do list. If it had the power to literally shut the mouths of lions and change the mind of a king, I need to do my part to revive prayer.” What transpired for her over the next two years has become a growing movement, and produced a transformational gift she hopes will touch and be of help to the entire nation and, possibly, the world. To help others experience the impact of prayer, both given and received, Kasey created and published The 30 Day Gift. Her book is, empirically, a handwritten journal filled with prayers and given away, or rather, gifted away. Using The 30 Day Gift is simple, yet profound. The giver commits to pray for a specific person or circumstance for 30 days (as Daniel did) and record those prayers in the journal. When complete, the journal is given as a tangible gift of

prayer to the person or people for whom the prayers were offered. “Whether it’s deep and reflective or simple bullet points; scribble or calligraphy; there is no right or wrong way to pray; simply talking to God is enough. The power is that you are seeking God on behalf of someone else,” explains Smith. Kasey created five versions of The 30 Day Gift and believes the journals can cover just about anyone or anything in prayer. Some milestones and FOR THE GIVER OF THIS GIFT, MAY HIS OR HER SPIRIT BE RENEWED BY PRAYER. occasions perfect for such a MAY THE RECIPIENT BE TOUCHED BY THE GOODNESS OF ANOTHER gift: AND THE GREATNESS AND THE POWER OF GOD. ITumble cut the ribbon on Jarrell's first gymnastics and tumbling gym for kids and teens. Owner and coach Jake Clear has training in his blood and has been working with kids and teens for 17 years with many local, state and even national champions to show for his hard work. "I grew up in Jarrell and I've always felt so connected here," Clear says. "Now I can give back to the community that has done a lot for me. When I

was growing up, there wasn't much here for kids to do and I love making that change." ITumble is a 6,000 square foot space with Girls and Boys gymnastics (age 2-18), tumbling, school break and summer cams, birthday parties, and parent-night-outs. Clear says they hope to be able to add adult classes soon. In just two months they have grown to 120 students. Coach Clear will also offer competition

for teams and his gym can qualify Jarrell HS students for their varsity letter. Clear hopes to meet new students at their Spring Break Camp March 12-16. "I started out in a different field and coaching slowly and truly became my career. I had strong coach-mentors as a kid and they played a big part in what I do today and why; reaching athletes and having a positive impact on kids."

Loyce J. Graham MD, PLLC 181 Town Center Blvd. Suite 400 Jarrell 512.746.2690 Office Hours: Mon., Wed., Thurs., Fri. 8 am - 5 pm | Tues. 8 am - Noon

On January 12, despite below-freezing temperatures and a bitter wind chill, hundreds of Georgetown residents, leadership and members of the business community packed the parking lots and surrounding side roads to attend the long-awaited grand opening of Randall's Georgetown store on Williams Drive at Jim Hogg Road. After ten months of construction, the 57,655 square-foot store opened for business at 6am, fully stocked with an impressive array of shiny produce, baked goods, floral arrangements and a yards-long fresh seafood counter. Speakers included Randall's owner Sidney Hopper, who said after 23 years he was pleased to have established a store in and a relationship with the City of Georgetown. "Georgetown is rich in Texas history, with a vibrant and growing population that appreciates modern and contemporary conveniences, which we have included in our design." Mayor Dale Ross explained that among the questions he frequently gets at speaking and community engagements, is "'When will we get a new grocery store in Georgetown?' and today we have our answer; welcome to Georgetown." Among the amenities at the new store,

shoppers will find an in-house full-service Starbucks, a hot food bar and deli service with seating for 80 guests. The store also has an outdoor patio for seating, a wine bar with Sommelier and craft beers; and a drive-through pharmacy. Still to come is a fuel station and convenience store. As if the gala event was not enough, Hopper also presented the Sheriff and Georgetown Chiefs with jumbo gift baskets to share with their first responder teams; large food packages for The Caring Place and other local food banks, and a generous $10,000 grant to Greg Bowden, President of the Georgetown ISD Education Foundation.

"We are proud to be part of this community and we want to make sure that the residents here know how much we want to be a good neighbor," Hopper said. Shoppers filled the aisles and the checkout lines were 20-30 people deep for a good part of the day, due in part to free breakfast offers, two-for-one sales and a black-friday-esque selection of specials. Despite the crowds,

shoppers were pleased and, as Director of Marketing Dawne Proffitt said, "Please come down and celebrate with us! It's quite a party at our newest store." The store is open every day from 6am - Midnight and the pharmacy is open 9-9 weekdays.

baby boomers finding

Companionship online by Jim Miller

Dear Savvy Senior, What can you tell me about online dating for baby boomers? I’m 57 and recently divorced, and would like to find a new friend to spend time with. Lonely Linda Dear Linda, Whether you’re interested in dating again or just looking for a friend to spend time with, online dating sites have become a very popular and effective way for baby boomers to meet new single people. Making new friends can be challenging as we get older, which is why online dating sites are an excellent option for baby boomers. They provide an easy and convenient way to meet dozens of new people, without ever having to leave home. And, to make things even easier, many sites today use matchmaking algorithms that factor in your interests and preferences so they can steer you to matches that are best suited for you. Here are some other tips to help you get started. Choose a site or two: There are literally hundreds of different matchmaking websites and apps available, so choosing can be a bit confusing. Costs typically range between $15 and $20 per month, however some dating sites are completely free to use. Depending on your preferences here are some popular options to look into. If you don’t want to spend any money, free sites like OKCupid.com and PlentyofFish.com are good places to start, but these sites have a lot of advertising. There are also free apps like Tinder (GoTinder. com) and Bumble.com, but these tend to be geared toward younger adults looking for casual romance. If you’re interested in lots of choices consider Match.com, which has a huge membership in all demographics. Or checkout eHarmony.com, which is also very large but more targeted for people who want

to take things slow. Or, if you are looking to find a specific type of person, there are hundreds of niche sites like: OurTime.com, SeniorPeopleMeet.com and 50more.com for those 50 and older; EliteSingles.com for professionals; DateMyPet.com for animal lovers; VeggieDate.org for vegetarians; JDate.com for Jewish singles; BlackPeopleMeet.com for African Americans; and ChristianMingle. com for Christians.

Create a profile: When you join a matchmaking site you’ll need to create a personality profile that reflects who you are, including recent photos, hobbies, interests, favorite activities and more. If you need some help, sites like ProfileHelper.com can write one for you for a fee.

Use caution: When you register with a site you remain anonymous. No one gets access to your personal contact information until you decide to give it out, so be prudent whom you give it to. Before meeting, you should chat on the phone or video chat a few times, and when you do meet in person for the first time, meet in a public place or bring a friend along. And if someone asks for money, don’t send it. Online dating/ sweetheart scams are out there so be aware. If you want to be extra cautious, you can even do a quick background check on your date at MyMatchChecker.com.

Don’t be naive: In an effort to get more responses, many people will exaggerate or flat out lie in their profiles, or post pictures that are 10 years old or 20 pounds lighter. So don’t believe everything you see or read.

Make an effort: A lot of times, people – especially women – sit back and let others come to them. Don’t be afraid to make the first move. When you find someone you like, send a short note that says, “I really enjoyed your profile. I think we have some things in common.” Keep it simple.

Don’t get discouraged: If you don’t get a response from someone, don’t let it bother you. Just move on. There are many others that will be interested in you and it only takes one person to make online dating worthwhile.

Jim Miller (left column) really knows what he is talking about. Sun City's Tina Latta, and Joe Masek (above) are proof that online dating works and it's never too late to take a leap. City Insider introduced you to these lovebirds last Valentine's Day and we are happy to report they are still an item. We ran into them just a few weeks ago at a fundraising event. "We're still going strong and I couldn't

be happier," she says. Tina is a widow and last year she decided to sign up on an online dating site. She put in the zip code for her home town in Illinois because she was planning a visit for the holiday. Joe, also widowed, lives in the town next to where she grew up and he is a volunteer at a wildlife preserve with property that backs up to her parents' property. "It just seemed like fate," Tina

says. They had many wonderful dates during her trip and romance blossomed. Before long they were planning and scheduling visits as often as possible. Joe and Tina are still sharing time over chats and Internet and getting those economy Southwest tickets. Proof positive that your companion may be out there waiting.

Jarrell's "Water-man" Reinvents as Comedy Headliner "America is a weird place because you really have too much peanut butter and pecans. And what's with all the pies? Pies where I'm from are meat and pastry. Here it's all cookies and fruit. Who puts pumpkin in a pie?"

Chris Goodwin

Y

ou may already know Chris Goodwin as a bond advocate, community leader, or Jarrell's answer to Erin Brockovich after he pestered City Council about water quality and they put a reverse osmosis system to help with the water supply. True, it has been this young father's dream, since he was 8, to make a difference in the world, but he has more recently realized another dream—to be a stand-up comedian. This endearing immigrant from Hawick, Scotland recently sponsored, produced and sold out his first one-man show in Jarrell and is eager for more. "Standing on

stage at the end of my show, something went through me that I've never felt before. Nothing else mattered and I felt like my soul was truly awake for the first time. I want that feeling back again and again." Goodwin had a long and difficult road to the spotlight. Like many comedians, his life was filled with struggle and adversity and he chose the path to salvation through humor. "I was born to parents who never worked a day in their lives and at one point we moved 18 times in four years so I didn't have a great time in school either," Goodwin says. "Scotland is

a very poor country by western standards and I was a teenager before I ever had a carpet. And let's just say, in America, my dad's behavior would have put me on a first name basis with the good people at CPS." Goodwin turned to humor in school when bigger kids picked on him; "When they laughed I wouldn't get beaten up and seeing that effect, I wanted to be on stage all the time and make people laugh." He practiced comedy at home in the mirror, told jokes on a makeshift stage in the gym and started writing his own material. His journey to America was just as fascinating. Homeless at 16, he stayed with friends, and at 19 happened to hear that a family friend in Killeen was ill and in need of a kidney. His mother told him she had always wanted him to see the world but he probably shouldn't have to give up internal organs to do it. Through a series of serendipitous circumstances, he came

to Texas, donated a kidney, and returned to Scotland. He found out that his American girlfriend was pregnant and broke the family mold by getting a job so he could afford to come back. "I loved the sense of independence and the sense of having done something valuable at the end of the day." Today he is a hardworking man and, as he has done in the past, keeps his head down, works hard and gets promoted regularly. If we had a few more pages here we would share all the compelling moments between pacing his pretend comedy stage in the school gymnasium, his American journey punctuated

by the Iceland volcano and Bastrop fires, to the glorious applause at his Jarrell show. But you'll have to see his show for the most scenic view and a chance to know and like him in person (and you will). Suffice to say, Goodwin's family thinks he lives like a king here in Texas. With his wife, Gillian and son Ayden, he thinks so too. He still asks every day, "Why don't we fix these things?" when he sees things like potholes or broken fences, and then he sets about picking up the trash or filling out grant applications. "I just want to know my neighbors and help my community. But I also want to be the center of attention and make people laugh. Everyone has that thing that gives them adrenaline. So call me for a graduation, bar mitzvah or a divorce party. I'm going to

live my dream, live for myself and my son and for that beautiful feeling on stage." You can see this budding superstar on Facebook and around Jarrell. His Old Glory and kilt combination belies his love of both countries and his comedy is a delightful look at an immigrant's outlook and journey into the "wacky wonderful land of America." He calls his show family-friendly but it is probably PG. "I don't talk about politics or bash people, but my language can be a bit real at times." (Note: if you really want to get him riled up, ask him about Craig Ferguson) So, for 60 minutes of a crazy, unapologetic life, you'll enjoy the story of the poor kid who gave up a kidney to become a star. And isn't that the real American dream after all?

Agape Pregnancy Resource Center in Round Rock provides help and caring Christian-based support for women with unplanned pregnancies. Since 2004, Eileen Avery, also known as the "blanket lady" has been making blankets for moms and babies as a volunteer. Agape reports her hard work has turned into thousands of blankets, some of

which are still being used or have become heirlooms. Pictured at right (courtesy of Facebook) Eileen shows off some of her handiwork. Agape asks those who have been clients and have received one of Eileen's blankets, they would love to share your story with supporters and Eileen herself. You can post a message on their page at Facebook.com/AgapePRCRR/.
