Simple & intentional
On September 26, Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida and continued its devastating path across Georgia and the Carolinas. Like so many others, our family was affected—left without power or running water. School was canceled, and our daily routine was completely disrupted. We packed up our kids and dogs and moved into a downtown hotel, grateful to find a room, but fully aware that our inconvenience paled in comparison to the heartbreaking losses others endured. Homes were leveled, and lives were forever changed.
The saying, "You don't know what you have until it's gone," resonated deeply with me during this time. I found myself longing for simple things—running on the Palmetto Trail which had hundreds of trees down, refrigeration, even my commute to work. My priorities and needs shifted in an instant.
Amid the storm's aftermath, it has been beautiful to watch people step up to help others rebuild. Our neighbors, for example, bought a trailer load of canned goods and generators and took it to Hendersonville. The cover image for this issue was taken in a neighboring city that was hit particularly hard. Despite being without power themselves, The Willcox set up their mobile kitchen and provided meals to lineworkers and first responders. Serve & Connect
packed hundreds of boxes, and Southern Way fed thousands of workers here in the Midlands and Upstate—the list goes on. This community spirit shows that we don’t need to wait for a storm for us to connect with and provide for each other—we can do something today.
As we approach this winter season, we are reminded of the importance of community and intentionality. With this issue, we encourage everyone to shop locally for those meaningful gifts that truly make a difference to the small business owner and the receiver, to support organizations doing incredible work, and to gather and celebrate both the small and big moments that enrich our lives. We’ve also included simple ideas on how you can do small acts of kindness that go a long way.
A special thank you to the local businesses and non-profits that believe in Fig and make its mission possible. Your support helps us celebrate Columbia and foster a thriving local economy. Together, we get to show off just how special our city is.
To the incredible hands and brains behind Fig Columbia, you are the true rock stars who make this publication shine.

The Sweetest Deal of All
When you’re buying or selling a home, you’re turning the page to a bright, new chapter of your life. Kate Sweeten and the rest of her team at The Sweeten Group understand how precious this moment is to you and your family, and they’re here to take care of the logistics while you focus on your next steps. Rest easy knowing that The Sweeten Group is working hard to secure you the best deal and set you up for a lifetime of success.
What drives Kate and the rest of The Sweeten Group is their passion for serving their community.
"We are constantly looking for ways to do good in the Midlands," explains Kate. "Most recently, we sponsored the Lighthouse for Life Gala. We also donate a portion of the proceeds of each closing to Children's Miracle Network in the name of our client."
Each quarter, The Sweeten Group sits down together to pick a cause dear to their hearts—whether it's a local food bank, backpack drive, or holiday toys for children in need.
"When you work with us, you are helping us serve our shared community."
The Sweeten Group had another knock-out year: including a total of 88 closings , an average of 9 days spent on market , and nearly $35 million in sales for her clients. Kate was also awarded the RE/MAX Elite , RE/MAX Top 40 Under 40 , and RE/MAX Lifetime Achievement* . Needless to say, choosing The Sweeten Group for your buying and selling needs is a pretty "sweet" deal.
Kate is ending 2024 with a time-honored tradition: her annual holiday client appreciation event at Drafts Tree Farm. At this special wintery event, clients can bring their families, enjoy hot chocolate, and wander through the groves of Christmas trees, as well as getting professional photos for their Christmas cards. It’s just another way she likes to thank those who entrust The Sweeten Group with this transition to their next chapter.

Venture and explore
The Palmetto Trail is an outdoor experience that goes beyond the typical hiking trail. This initiative aims to connect the breathtaking Upstate mountains to the serene Lowcountry waterways, showcasing the diverse landscapes and rich natural beauty of South Carolina. Currently, over 380 miles of the trail are completed and open to the public, offering a variety of routes for hikers, bikers, campers, and nature lovers alike. As progress continues, dedicated volunteers and organizations work tirelessly to connect the remaining sections, striving to create a continuous pathway that spans the entire state.
The Palmetto Trail welcomes families, individuals, and furry companions to immerse themselves in nature. Whether you're seeking a peaceful stroll, an adventurous camping trip, or a scenic walk along the coast, the trail offers something for everyone. We encourage you to explore the beauty of the Palmetto Trail and create lasting memories along the way!
WE ASKED THE PALMETTO TRAIL TEAM WHERE THEIR FAVORITE SECTION OF THE TRAIL IS—EACH PASSAGE IS DIFFERENT, SO MAKE SURE TO CHECK THEM ALL OUT!

Celebrating the magic of partnerships
Since its founding by CEO Kassy Alia Ray in 2015 following the death of her husband and Forest Acres Police Department Officer, Greg Alia, Serve & Connect has helped to shape a future where police and citizens work together as one community to create a healthy, sustainable community so everyone can feel safe and supported. Their annual gala “Illuminight” brings hundreds of community members together in celebration of instilling hope and healing within our communities. A spark of hope
The Ahtonen Family
After thirteen-year-old Daniel Ahtonen suffered a stroke at school, his family was prepared to sleep in their vehicle to remain nearby during his recovery. That’s when a representative from Ronald McDonald House stepped in and secured them a free room close to the hospital. With one meal a day, comfortable accommodations, and all basic necessities provided by Ronald McDonald House Charities of Columbia, SC, Daniel’s family was by his side throughout his recovery.

The Reinhardt Family
As Zack spent the first few months of his life in the NICU, his parents drove between Irmo and downtown Columbia to care for both him and his brother. Ronald McDonald House Charities of Columbia, SC, was always there to offer support, stocking free, filling snacks in the waiting room and regularly rolling a snack trolley through the NICU. Like so many others with children in the hospital, Zack’s parents relied on Ronald McDonald House for this small beam of light as they waited to bring their son home.
A pawsome mission
The Darla Fund, an initiative created by local nonprofit Animal Mission, is saving the lives of dogs and cats sheltered at Columbia Animal Services. This fully donor-supported fund is named for Darla, a courageous dog who suffered an injury to her hip and required an extensive surgery and recovery period. Because her medical expenses were covered by generous donors, Darla is now able to enjoy the freedom of movement with far less pain and discomfort. By donating to the Darla Fund, you're giving pets like her a second life—one where they can be happier and healthier than ever before.
Unite the community
For United Way of the Midlands, everything comes back to community—from fundraising to donations to trailblazing initiatives. As a locally based non-profit that works hand-in-hand with key community organizations, United Way of the Midlands possesses a unique birds-eye view to the needs of the area. Through the collective effort of their employees, volunteers, partners, and donors, they are creating a true impact on the education, housing, and physical and mental health of our community.
Campaign for Good
In 2020, MacKenzie Scott donated $10 million to United Way of the Midlands— empowering them to envision an even brighter future for our region. To maximize the impact of this incredible gift, United Way launched a new fundraising initiative called Campaign for Good. They seek to raise another $10 million and direct the funds toward increasing literacy, economic opportunity, affordable housing, and other resources for the community. Help United Way meet their goal, amplifying the realworld reach of their organization!
Strategic Impact Plan
MacKenzie Scott’s gift, combined with Campaign for Good donations, will fund United Way’s Strategic Impact Plan for the Midlands. This plan aims to bring true and positive change to the region through multiple boots-on-the-ground initiatives directed toward six key facets: building STEM education and literacy resources; developing the next generation of our area’s workforce; improving economic security; constructing affordable housing; communicating about the area’s 2-1-1 hotline; and increasing access to dental and eye care. Help United Way reach their goal by visiting uway.org/supporter-toolkit and sharing the Supporter Toolkit!
The Village
As part of its mission to make affordable housing more available in the Midlands, United Way has partnered with the Fairfield County School District Education Foundation on a groundbreaking new project: the Village. Here, teachers, administrators, and their families can live in rent-controlled, three-bedroom homes near the schools where they teach. This is a monumental step toward a more equitable, economically-sustainable life for South Carolina’s educators!

Young Men United
Everyone deserves to build the future they want. United Way is working to help young men succeed academically and professionally with Young Men United, a mentorship and workforce development program based on Milwaukee’s successful MKE Fellows Initiative. By providing mentorship, internships, family support and career guidance, beginning in the 10th, 11th, and 12th grade and until the participant reaches their career goals, United Way is helping young men achieve their dreams—with the community backing them every step of the way.
When choosing mentors, United Way looks for people who will develop a genuine interest in their mentee’s long-term success, meeting oneon-one once or more every month. By becoming a stable fixture in a young man’s life, helping him to drive continually toward his career and educational goals, you are making a difference to last a lifetime.
Authentic Tammy Jones
When Tammy Jones first moved to Columbia after graduating high school, she fell in love with Main Street and city living. Originally from the small town of Pomaria, near Newberry, she came to attend Columbia College—quickly learning she was a “country girl with an urban girl on the inside.”
After working in a local hospital, first as a human resources intern and then as a night receptionist for the emergency room, she joined the team at BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina (BCBS) in 1999. Five months into her time with the company, Tammy was 26 weeks pregnant with her son when she began feeling unwell one morning. Her husband and her mother encouraged her to stay home, but she thought she could power through.
“I went to work Friday morning, gave birth Friday evening,” Tammy said. “I was in labor all day and had no idea I was in labor.” Her son, who turned 25 this past fall, weighed less than three pounds at birth.
When she returned to work after months spent caring for her son, she quickly demonstrated her capacity to learn and excel—a trait she loves to amplify in others.
She experienced the first of two “aha moments” in her life while serving in a training role, realizing that she loved to teach others. Her second “aha moment” came years later, as she volunteered through Women in Philanthropy (WIP) to help teach a life skills course for the residents of Homeless No More. There, she understood once again how central teaching is to her personal fulfillment.
Created by United Way of the Midlands, WIP is a community of local women who donate, fundraise, and put in the work to help all women in the Midlands become more selfsufficient. They lend their support through charitable grants to pay for education, career training, automotive work, technology access, and other valuable resources.
Before learning about WIP, Tammy always associated philanthropy with extreme wealth. But when she saw how WIP provides for the community, she realized she had witnessed philanthropy all her life. Tammy said, “I saw my mom and her friends do this growing up… [If] toilet paper was on sale, they would buy it. Almost like in bulk—just because it was on sale. It was a good price. And Dale might need it, Laura might need it, or Carolyn might need it. And they would do that for each other, just to make sure their houses had what they needed. That’s philanthropy to me.”
With community-based philanthropy, social good doesn’t come down to just one person. It’s neighbors, friends, and family building each other up—just as Tammy’s mother always did, and just as Tammy does now.
Today, Tammy serves as the committee chair of WIP and the training and development manager for BlueChoice HealthPlan at BCBS—leading the city she has long-loved in philanthropy. Always excited to be in the redeveloped downtown, she still visits her old stomping grounds on Main Street, browsing Soda City Market on Saturday mornings and venturing into the city beyond.

Igniting opportunity
In this season of giving, few gifts come close to that of a personalized education for bright students that benefit from a nontraditional approach to learning. At Sandhills School, opportunity awaits in every classroom for every child. Individualized instruction comes at a cost, and thanks to generous donations made by members of the community, many students are able to attend on scholarship. Embrace the joyful spirit and consider making a donation that will help empower the success of students by giving them the opportunity to reach their full potential in school.
Sandhills School is a non-profit organization and all donations are tax deductible. If you are interested in providing scholarship funding to support students that need Orton-Gillingham intervention, visit sandhillsschool.org/giving.

Something to smile about
Midlands Orphan Relief is passionately committed to transforming the lives of children who are identified as suffering from abuse, abandonment, or neglect across the Midlands. Through personal care kits containing clothing, shoes, stuffed animals, books, and a generous dose of love, they bring relief and joy to children who often lack basic necessities. This holiday season, you have the opportunity to join their mission by participating in the Stocking Drive, which fills care kits for vulnerable children. When you volunteer your time and resources with Midlands Orphan Relief, you play a vital role in bringing smiles to those who need them the most. Help them in fulfilling needs and creating hope.
Social Mission South Carolina Wildlife Federation
The South Carolina Wildlife Federation has always been at the forefront of wildlife conservation in the Palmetto State. As the oldest conservation organization in South Carolina, SCWF is dedicated to protecting our state’s rich flora and fauna through education, advocacy, and habitat conservation. As we celebrate the local heroes and organizations that make Columbia shine, there’s no better way to celebrate than to spotlight SCWF as this issue’s Social Mission.
GIFTS THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE
For those looking to share their love of nature, SCWF offers a special variety of books, hats, and resource guides— perfect gifts for the budding conservationist. The newest book on their shelves helps teach kids their ABCs through a fun exploration of local plants and animals. In addition, their “Wild SC” book serves as a fantastic resource guide for birdwatchers, outdoor enthusiasts, and people new to the Palmetto State who want to learn more about our local animals and habitats.
You can even purchase one of their bird nesting boxes that serve as the ideal habitat for bluebirds and chickadees. For those who enjoy a warm cup of coffee while birdwatching, get your very own SCWF-branded mugs and coffee blend, which allow you to sip sustainably while supporting a great cause.
JOIN THE CLUB
With your purchase from SCWF, all donations and monetary gifts go directly to habitat conservation and restoration. While SCWF is affiliated with the National Wildlife Federation, all donations go directly to SCWF and stay within our beloved state.
Every membership helps to support local biodiversity and maintain the natural beauty that defines South Carolina. As our state experiences rapid population growth, the need for dedicated conservation efforts becomes increasingly urgent.
“We feel an urgency to protect wildlife as our state is growing,” Sara Green, Executive Director of SCWF, says. “We need as many people as possible to work together to protect our wildlife in these times of growth and development.”
With the SCWF, there’s so many ways to spread joy, education, and advocacy for our South Carolina wildlife and their essential habitats.

At Ben Lippen, students are given agency over their focus in courses by selecting an English seminar that suits their interests and future aspirations while maintaining the traditional benchmarks of critical reading, writing, and vocabulary. The school’s seminars are also intentionally designed to develop critical skills that prepare students for life outside of the English classroom. Socratic seminars, where questioning and student-led dialogue take center stage, give all students— not just future English majors—the opportunity to develop, practice, and polish several non-traditional ELA specific skills, such as engaging in discussion with peers, preparing for discussions, and other social language skills that enhance personal and professional relationships.

“I think an orthodontics appointment should be like going to see a re-release of your favorite movie! You know it’s good, you know what to expect, but it blows you away every time. In fact, even after the post-credit scene, you like it even more. Orthodontics should be so much more than an amazing smile. It should be a five-star experience.”
–Chris Jernigan
