Food is Creativity. Food is Community.
IMAGINE THE JOY of getting creative in the kitchen, turning simple ingredients into something delicious to share. But what if you had only the bare minimum to cook with—or nothing at all? For many in our community, this is a daily reality.
Second Harvest Food Bank is committed to combatting food insecurity throughout Lehigh Valley. Through their Farm to Pantry and Growing Partners programs, more families can experience the nourishment and joy of a healthy meal. Last year, the distribution of fresh produce to agency partners increased by 42%, providing more opportunities for families to thrive.
Everyone deserves access to fresh, nutritious food. This September, during Hunger Action Month, Second Harvest Food Bank invites the community to join the fight against hunger. Supporting Second Harvest can help put produce into the hands of those who need it most, empowering them to create meals that nourish both body and spirit.

St. Luke’s establishes new Physician Response Team
THE BLUE, GOLD, AND WHITE Ford Expedition with the St. Luke’s logo on its doors rushed along Schoenersville Road in Bethlehem en route to assist an ambulance crew caring for a patient with an unusual, life-threatening medical emergency.
This specialized vehicle is a key component of a new partnership between St. Luke’s Emergency Medicine Department and Northampton County, aimed at saving more lives at on-scene accidents and incidents in Bethlehem.
“This new collaboration with Northampton County and our first-responder partners puts our fellowship-trained emergency medical services faculty physicians and fellows in the field in a mobile manner, ” explained Bryan Wilson, MD, St. Luke’s EMS Fellowship Director and EMS Response Program Director.
“This will help to supplement and support the medically complex care provided by emergency medical technicians (EMT) and paramedics in the community.”
St. Luke’s mobile EMS Response Team is the first of its kind in the Lehigh Valley area, currently serving ambulance units from the City of Bethlehem EMS, Suburban EMS, and Bethlehem Township Volunteer Fire Company, and expecting to add other units in the future.
The grant-funded $250,000 vehicle, like a mini-ER on wheels, is equipped with a state-of-the-art heart monitor/ defibrillator, integrated CPR and ventilation feedback devices, lifesaving medications, advanced airway management supplies, and a handheld ultrasound machine. Plans are underway to carry emergency blood for on-scene transfusions when there is major blood loss.
Dr. Wilson was behind the wheel of the Ford that day, responding to a request for assistance from the EMS crew. Together, he and the EMS crew worked with staff from a cardiologist’s office to save the patient’s life after his pacemaker malfunctioned. The team was able to safely deliver the living patient to a nearby hospital for follow-up care.
Based at St. Luke’s Anderson Campus, the EMS Response Team receives requests from an ambulance crew through Northampton County’s 911 Center. The Response Team also provides continuing hands-on emergency medicine education to first responders in the county. These services “help show EMS clinicians how much we value their expertise and possibly address recruitment and retention issues faced by EMS services professionals across the region,” added Dr. Wilson.

The building’s proximity to the former Bethlehem Steel factory is sentimental to Tony, whose grandfather and great-grandfather worked a combined 80 years in the industry. The building features a mural of his great-grandfather, painted by local artist Matt Halm, in the kitchen area named “The Bull” in his memory.
The renovation was made possible by the incredible vendor team who dedicated months of time and expert guidance: Alan Kunsman Roofing & Siding, BEI Electrical, Boyle Construction, Builders Door & Hardware, Burkholder's Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc., Center Valley Concrete Form, Cope Commercial Flooring and Interiors, Inc., Corporate Environments, Creative Landscapes, DesignPoint, Dual Temp Company, Dugan & Marcon, Inc., ET&T, Inc., K&H Custom Window Treatments, MKSD architects, Morris Black & Sons, Inc., Overhead Door, Precision Tile, Prowall Painting, Reed Sign Company, and Vistacom Inc.
Pride OF PLACE
IT’S BEEN ONE YEAR since BSI Corporate Benefits relocated its headquarters to the former Victory Firehouse in Southside Bethlehem. The historic building underwent a $2.5 million renovation that took nearly 14 months to complete with the help of over 20 local vendors and partners.
BSI, the leading employee benefits firm in the Lehigh Valley, has grown rapidly over the last few years and needed a new space to accommodate its growing team. However, the relocation was not just physical but also strategic, aimed at enhancing client support, collaboration, and community events like monthly blood drives.
“While companies are trying to figure out the right model—remote, in-office, or hybrid—we look at our headquarters as part of our culture. Our new building, with all of its incredible history, is now a part of all of us, and will always be there as a place for teammates to come together, share ideas, celebrate each other, and act as a physical example of our commitment to our clients, community, and each other. We are here to stay and it works for us, in our own comfortably unique way.” — Tony DaRe, CEO
The organization, which prides itself on an employee-first culture, has embraced a hybrid working model. The new office was designed to offer flexibility, allowing team members to work from home or at various workspaces throughout the office. Each desk and conference room is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, enabling effective virtual and in-person meetings and events.
Each department, such as the in-house data analytics or customer service teams, also has its own dedicated space. BSI is fully integrated with clients to meet their business goals, offering executive-level strategies, market competitive benefits, cost-control strategies, and day-to-day member support.

Relief for Complex Regional Pain Syndrome following dog attack
DAVID GUERRERO was walking to a bus stop when a dog attacked him. He was rushed to the emergency department at St. Luke’s University Hospital in Bethlehem where he underwent surgery on his left hand and was treated for wounds on his right wrist and left calf.
The dog did severe damage to David’s left hand. He and his healthcare team say he has permanent disability. “I’m a righty, thank God,” he said. David has been working with Scott Loev, DO, medical director for St. Luke’s Spine and Pain Associates, to manage his chronic pain.
David recently completed occupational therapy at Physical Therapy at St. Luke’s North in Bethlehem.
It was a huge milestone that has helped him regain movement and some function in his left hand, including the ability to make a fist.
However, pain set in, later identified by Dr. Loev as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS).
“There are no specific tests to diagnose CRPS,” Dr. Loev said. “Diagnosis is made during a physical examination based on a list of common signs and symptoms such as color change, swelling, and nerve pain.”
CRPS can occur, Dr. Loev said, after a forceful trauma to an arm or leg, including a crushing injury or a fracture. David sustained both from the attack.
Dr. Loev has administered four sympathetic nerve blocks to a

collection of nerves called the stellate ganglion to stop the pain.
David said the first shot “did nothing,” but he noticed improvement after the second shot and even more improvement after the third and fourth shots. He’s currently between zero and one on the pain scale.
David, who works for Mack Trucks, has been on disability since his attack. Despite his incredible progress and improvement in his pain, he is still disabled in his hand. “It might be a big career change,” he said.
He credits his progress to his St. Luke’s team. “From the time I went to the ER, the whole St. Luke’s team has been nothing but the best.”

Furthering Creativity & Expression
The Banana Factory in Southside Bethlehem is an iconic destination for both beginner and lifelong artists to express themselves through a variety of mediums. Housed in a complex of six buildings (including a former banana distribution warehouse), the Banana Factory is proud to have served the artistic community for 25 years through its excellent programming and classes.
However, the current space has since reached its capacity. To expand and accommodate even more people, the existing facility is set to be demolished and replaced with a new Cultural Center. This state-of-the-art center for visual and performing arts and education will encompass five stories, 78,500 square feet, 36 new art studios, and a 5,500-square-foot glass studio, becoming a vibrant hub for artists and creatives to explore diverse programs.
Whether it’s glass blowing, ceramics, jewelry making, or digital arts, the Banana Factory is packed with year-round programming for every age. The new facility will expand on the current offerings and introduce new programs the community can enjoy, including a comedy theatre and a digital production lab and studio.
While the Banana Factory undergoes renovation and demolition, ArtsQuest will continue to offer its programming elsewhere. Classes and other activities will be available for the public at several locations, including schools in the Bethlehem Area School District, Bethlehem Area Public Library, and Moravian University.
The community can rest assured that there’s still plenty to be involved in while the space is being remodeled. Arts and expression are crucial to any thriving society, and ArtsQuest is dedicated to keeping these accessible to all during renovation and beyond.

Authentic: Jennifer Mindock
FOR AS LONG AS SHE CAN REMEMBER, Jennifer Mindock has been an advocate for making a difference. Always rooting for the underdog, her life has been centered around inspiring change while simultaneously caring for the earth.
After losing her job during the pandemic, Jenni found herself reflecting on her life and what she wanted it to become. She saw an abundance in boutique shops, but realized that customers often do not know the people behind the brands they are buying from.
As the founder of Jentle Land Mark, an online marketplace selling ethical lifestyle goods, Jenni fused her passion for supporting sustainable businesses with giving women of all ethnicities and backgrounds the representation they
deserve. Jenni features makers from all over the USA and Canada that align with her mission and celebrate diversity.
“I don’t need to uplift only myself; I can do the same for others and still be successful,” Jenni said. “Women don’t get enough credit. We’re the backbone of society and I want to do my part in making sure I’m uplifting others.”
As a trailblazer from a family of strong, successful women, Jenni is dedicated to creating a space for others to be seen, heard, and valued. She is proud to have been enriched by diverse cultures and backgrounds and wants others to share that same experience.
“I find a lot of my passion in wanting my friends and family to feel safe,” Jenni said. “If I can help in creating that space, that’s what I want to do.”
Although Jentle Land Mark is currently an online marketplace, Jenni dreams of furthering her mission by eventually opening a storefront, allowing more female and minority-owned businesses to be featured and have a seat at the table.
Fostering community, advocating for change, and love for sustainability are just a few of Jenni’s multiple passions. However, she emphasizes that people don’t need to stick themselves in a box to be successful.
“At the end of the day, why do anything that dulls your sparkle?”

Invented In Lehigh Valley
The Lehigh Valley has long been a hub of innovation, where groundbreaking inventions have laid the foundation for modern developments in the manufacturing, technology, music, and life sciences industries. Our region’s rich history of entrepreneurial spirit makes it clear that anything is Made Possible in Lehigh Valley. Learn more at lehighvalley.org.
‘H’ Beam: Bethlehem Steel’s invention of the ‘H’ beam in 1908, with its wider flanges, revolutionized skyscraper construction by providing stronger support. This engineering feat influenced high-profile structures like New York’s Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. Tower and Detroit’s Cadillac Tower.
Innovative custom kitchen design
Since its founding in 1908, Morris Black Designs has set the standard in transforming kitchens with handcrafted products that define quality and innovation. Now, in a nod to their rich heritage, they proudly unveil the 1908 ™ line of residential cabinetry, manufactured right here in the Lehigh Valley.
“Our team strives to blend elegance with functionality and every detail reflects our passion for design,” said Robert Black, President of Morris Black Designs.
The 1908 ™ collection reimagines the kitchen for the modern age, blending sleek, contemporary design with the craftsmanship and progressive spirit that has defined Morris Black for over a century. Featuring frameless, fullaccess cabinets, this line maximizes storage and accessibility, offering a seamless blend of form and function.
The clean lines and customizable options—including metal and dovetailed walnut drawers, soft-close technology, LED undercounter lighting, interior storage options, and concealed appliances—allow for a truly personalized kitchen experience. Crafted from wrap-around laminate, these cabinets are as durable as they are stylish, resistant to cracking, and easy to maintain, ensuring every kitchen remains as beautiful as the day it was installed.
Discover the 1908 ™ line in person at Morris Black’s Lehigh Valley showroom. Let their team of expert designers create a kitchen that's both functional and a work of art—where every detail is an imaginative reflection of a personalized, unique style.

Giving Back: Mosaic Youth Chorus
IN A WORLD that is increasingly challenging for youth, Mosaic Youth Chorus (MYC) in the Lehigh Valley aims to provide young people with the skills to navigate these complexities. The choir’s mission is “to empower diverse youth of the Lehigh Valley to create community, build empathy, and effect positive social change through artistic and expressive choral singing.”
The choir performs music from diverse genres, styles, cultures, and historical periods, diving deeply into the context and examining complex social issues through the music.
This study fosters a strong sense of community as members gain understanding and learn empathy. Concerts are thematically designed to communicate a strong message to audiences.
Dr. Joy Hirokawa, MYC’s Artistic and Executive Director, recognized the need for a safe space for youth to express themselves. “Youth need to have an opportunity to speak out about the things that matter to them and learn about the world,” Joy remarked. “Music, especially choral singing, is a very powerful way to do that.”
Recently, MYC explored the stories of the immigrants who came to Eastern Pennsylvania and the Lehigh Valley to work in coal mines and steel mills. They toured Ellis Island, the Pocono coal region, and Catasauqua, singing music connected to the immigrant story and exploring their own identities.
As a nonprofit and tuition-based organization, MYC offers financial assistance to ensure every young person has the opportunity to sing.

Where History Meets Hospitality
WIND CREEK BETHLEHEM offers an unforgettable getaway for every type of guest. It is a one-stop destination where both weekend and day visitors can find something to enjoy. Wind Creek Bethlehem not only brings gaming and excitement each day, but it also exudes a rich history preserved within the property for all to take part in.
Retrofitted onto the historic Bethlehem Steel Corporation, Wind Creek Bethlehem’s property pays homage to its long-standing history through its architecture and design. From the exposed steel beams on the casino floor to the property’s massive exterior Ore Bridge structure, the preservation of the former architectural artistry is prevalent throughout the property.
The legacy of the former Bethlehem Steel plant remains alive at Wind Creek Bethlehem. The property signifies a rebirth of our city’s storied past while simultaneously embracing the future.”
Patrick Ryan Executive Vice President and General Manager at Wind Creek Bethlehem
With an eye to the future, Wind Creek Bethlehem expanded its property with the addition of a new hotel tower. The highly anticipated $160 million expansion introduced a range of new offerings to the property. The addition increased the total number of AAA Four-Diamond rooms from 282 to over 550. Additionally, the resort now boasts an impressive 60,000 square feet of combined meeting and convention space, Spa at Wind Creek, and upscale lobby bar MIXX at Wind Creek. The expansion prioritized artistry with grand 20-foot ceilings in the lobby, custom art installations in the hallways, and shades of gold and rich jewel tones throughout. In the new hotel rooms, portions of the wallpaper are actual copies of the Bethlehem Steel Corporation’s blueprints—again, another ode to the property’s rich history.
“We are inspired by the hardworking spirit of those who once powered the Bethlehem Steel Corporation,” said Patrick. “As we look to the future, we are excited to continue this property’s legacy by providing a premier destination for our community, travelers, and everyone in between.”

A JEWELED CHAMPAGNE-COLORED
FABRIC is draped and pinned taut to the shoulders, waist, and bust of a mannequin at Lara Bly Designs fashion studio in downtown Bethlehem. Hours of sewing and meticulous labor will go into this piece before it is transformed into a show-stopping gown, but once it is finished it will make its debut on the runway at Lara’s annual Fall Fashion Show. All original patterns and designs are cut, assembled, and sewn on-site by Lara and her small team of professional seamstresses. Originally inspired to become a designer by her visits to Lehigh Valley’s once-beloved Hess’s Department Store, Lara traveled to London to receive formal education and training as a fashion designer.
Now as a small business owner, Lara Bly’s boutique creates ready-to-wear original designs for all body types and curates a selection of chic brands with the goal of making all women feel pretty, comfortable, and fashionable. Outfits and accessories for every occasion may be found, from understated cottons and elegant satins to glittering sequins, crystals, and flamboyant ostrich feathers.
Lara’s customers and VIPs, known fondly around Lehigh Valley as “Bly Girls,” can always expect a warm welcome and a glass of white wine when they drop into one of Lara’s shop parties. It’s a safe place to sip, shop, and socialize all at once and find unique fashions and friendships that will never go out of style.

“Amazing Grace” turns 97 after 80 years with St. Luke’s Sacred Heart
GRACE CARR (née Malloy) set out from the small town of Freeland in coal country at the age of 17 to become a nurse at Sacred Heart Hospital in Allentown in 1944. World War II was still raging. She has been with Sacred Heart ever since.
For the past eight decades, “Amazing Grace” has either trained, worked, or volunteered at the hospital, now St. Luke’s Sacred Heart Campus. It has been a journey filled with many years and memories, both personal and professional.
Grace, who turned 97 on July 4, still volunteers each Wednesday at the hospital. She keeps coming back because, “It’s my alma mater, and I love this place!
“As long as I can remember, I wanted to be a nurse,” the 1947 graduate of the Sacred Heart School of Nursing said proudly. She got married, started a family, and never thought of leaving the hospital at Fourth and Chew Streets in downtown Allentown.
All five of her children, and nearly all of her grandchildren, were born at “The Heart,” as it’s affectionally called.
Grace retired at age 62 to take care of her ailing husband and began volunteering in 1993 after he passed away. She has logged more than 6,000 hours as a volunteer—always on Wednesdays. Her tasks include taking specimens to the lab, escorting patients to tests and procedures, and delivering water and flowers to patients.
“Grace is fantastic,” says Volunteer Engagement Specialist Beth Fogel, who has known Grace for 20 years.
“We call her Amazing Grace. She loves to talk about the history of the hospital. She’s such a joy to talk to and has a great sense of humor.”
One of her most memorable patients was the newborn son of a fellow nurse in the nursery. “He’s now my son-inlaw,” Grace says with pleasure. “Who knew that would happen?”
She aspires to continue serving the hospital as its oldest volunteer ever, playing an integral role in its 100plus-year history of caring for the community’s sick and injured.
“Keeping busy keeps me going,” she said. “I’ll keep coming back here as long as I’m able.”
