WHY LANCASTER?
You live here or are visiting because you know this city is special. It’s that intangible, hard-toput-into-words reason you keep coming back. Like a piece of art that catches your eye, there’s just something captivating about this place we call home.
Here at Fig, we know magic happens in the collective whole, where each business, organization, and individual plays a part in this ever-changing, imperfectly-beautiful masterpiece of a city. Our role in this creative microcosm is to introduce you to the melody of interwoven texture brought to life by passionate creatives and innovative entrepreneurs. For nearly 19 years, our own team has had the honor of painting a picture of collaboration and change as Lancaster City has taken shape— never finished and always evolving.
We believe creative evolution is rooted in a foundation of education, which is why we are grateful to Tom and Gina Russo for sponsoring a section on art education and the exceptional talent that is coming out of local art schools. Creativity is also debuting on the big screen through the work of a growing group of filmmakers who are making Lancaster a film destination.
Find many of them in this issue and get a preview of some of their work showing at The Red Rose Film Festival this November.
Back to that painting that’s calling to you—have you met Jerome Hershey? He’s our cover feature and has been creating nationally-recognized art for 43 years in his Queen Street studio. And right down the street is the newly opened Lancaster Art Vault where a dozen artists are creating and showing their work, a great addition to our 30+ city galleries.
Throughout this issue, we’re sharing the stories of local people and places in our brightest and most colorful Fig to date. On the pages, businesses have chosen a color that speaks to them and brings them joy. Our city is a rainbow of creativity, and we hope you find inspiration to express yourself in new and different ways.
We encourage you to engage with—and buy from—local artists and entrepreneurs this season. It’s an investment for you, for them, and for Lancaster.
With creativity,
Deborah Brandt and the Fig Industries team

Fresh Face: Nooks
THE ADVENTURE BEGAN when Shawn Smucker texted his wife Maile, “Do you want to buy a bookstore?” To his surprise, she was all in. From reading with their children while they were homeschooling to being writers themselves, stories have defined so much of the Smuckers’ lives.
“It was magical to watch my kids fall in love with stories. As a homeschooling mom, we read a lot together,” Maile recalls. “It was just amazing to see what stories can open up in a person, and to be able to see that happening in front of me was really a gift.”
Now, the Smuckers share this love of story with the Lancaster community at Nooks, their whimsical bookshop on Gallery Row. Cozy beanbags and padded benches make the perfect place for little readers to flip through picture books with their parents. For adult readers, Maile and Shawn love offering recommendations to anyone looking to escape into a new book.
“We just want it to be a space where people feel like they can step to the side of their normal busy lives,” he added.
Nooks is designed to be a place where community flourishes, with local author events, story time for kids, and a welcoming environment built around a shared love for books.
“We get to stand behind the counter and hear conversations that happen between customers that don’t even know each other, and then suddenly there’s a connection, and they’re exchanging phone numbers,” Maile said. “We want it to be a place that cultivates community while also celebrating stories.”

“It’s a place where you can take a deep breath and just relax,” Shawn said.

ART
THERE ARE MANY REASONS why a creative community flourishes. Perhaps at the forefront of them all are passionate educators—teachers who inspire artistic transformation and direct budding artists to greatness.
For decades, established higher education institutions like Millersville University and Pennsylvania College of Art & Design have instilled both skill and passion in students finding their voice in Lancaster, while other educational programs have given artists of all disciplines a place to discover more of who they are.
One of these unique opportunities is The Mount Gretna School of Art in nearby Lebanon County. MGSoA is the brainchild of Lancaster-based artist Jay Noble who established the summer art school retreat amongst the cabins and wooded forests of Mount Gretna more than 15 years ago.
An established fixture in the area’s artist community, Jay maintains a deep connection with colleagues who share his vision for developing young artists, hosting renowned guest lecturers and inviting resident artists of the programs to capture the world around them en plein air.
The combined force of these creative educators has spurred national buzz for art in Lancaster and its surrounding regions, as instructors across artistic institutions lean on each other to nurture the next generation of Central Pennsylvania-trained artists to make their mark on the world.
On the following pages, you will meet Jay as well as his colleagues: Dorothy Frey, Assistant Professor in Painting at Millersville University, and Aaron Thompson, Assistant Professor of Fine Art at PCA&D, who have all selected rising talents they have taught over the years.
This special feature is sponsored by Tom and Gina Russo. Tom, a Partner at Gardner Russo & Quinn LLC, along with his wife Gina, are longtime supporters of the arts, dear friends to Jay, and advocates for the continued recognition of Lancaster as a community where artists can thrive.
“
The history of great teachers has inspired those who now teach, with increasing effectiveness in delivering artists with a point of view and a point to make through their art.”
– Thomas A. Russo
Gina & Tom Russo
Q&A with Jay Noble
What drew you to the arts?
As a young person, I was thirsty for a challenge that would stretch my abilities and loved the way paint, charcoal, and clay were so hands-on, leading me to see and feel more deeply every day. The artists I admired only got better as they aged. I wanted that for myself and to live this sensory enhanced life as an artist—marveling in the phenomenon of beauty, the grit of life, and the promise of lifelong growth in art.
What is your artistic speciality?
I love the act of seeing as much as the act of painting and drawing. The idea that one’s perception can be shaped by as much as an artwork is moving to me. Some of my work is a form of visual high calculus extending from late cubism, while other pieces appeal on a level anyone can enjoy—a simple painting of a flower or a tree in a landscape space. I seek complex, slow visual experiences in my work, regardless of the outcome.
What makes MGSoA such a special place for arts education?
On the surface, MGSoA may seem like a humble plein air painting program. However, the curriculum has an explosive impact that reaches deep into what it means to be a painter. We regularly hear from students that it was “life-changing”—the perfect blend of fellowship and rigor. The program is made even more special by our scholarship system, which motivates prospective college to graduate-level students of all income levels to apply.

Assistant Professor of Fine Art at PCA&D
Q&A with Aaron Thompson
What drew you to the arts?
I was raised by a single mother who made crafts for the City Market where I grew up in Charleston, South Carolina. I remember wading into the ocean as far as we could to gather sand dollars, bleaching them, and painting them together at night so she could sell them later. Making art and being a part of nature was integral in my childhood. That really inspired me to explore art at the Savannah College of Art & Design, where I decided to focus on painting. I then continued my education at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia before starting my career as an Assistant Professor. Teaching is the hardest thing I have ever done, and I learn so much from my students. My personal work has gotten better because of teaching.
How does PCA&D foster learning in student artists?
We really cultivate an environment where the student’s voice and the work they are making is empowered. Because of that, you will see a lot of diversity of work because everyone’s voice is very different. At our annual exhibition, you will see the full gamut, and that is something we really care about here.
What
excites you about the Lancaster art scene ?
Along with MGSoA, PCA&D, and Millersville, there are other important institutions here like the Demuth Museum and the Lancaster Museum to of Art. There are also new endeavors opening up like ESOarts and Lancaster Art Vault, which is exciting to see.

Q&A with Dorothy Frey
What drew you to the arts?
I grew up on a dairy farm in Lancaster County, where I would watch my older sisters draw. As soon as I could hold a paintbrush, I began painting what I saw around me—sky, flowers, trees. There never seemed to be enough paper in the house for me. I came to Millersville to study painting, eventually getting my MFA at American University in Washington D.C. I was a Teaching Assistant there and discovered instructing came naturally to me. I enjoyed talking to people about their work, giving them suggestions or ideas to grow.
What excites you about the Lancaster art scene?
Lancaster is special because you have a mixture of rural and urban areas, and you have people who really care about art. It is supportive here for artists like myself and also welcoming for young artists to show their work around the community. I think that is why many of my students are staying.
What legacy would you like to leave as an educator?
I studied with Robert Andriulli at Millersville, and he was the mentor I went to at every step of my career. When he retired in 2017, I was hired for the painting position in the fine arts department at Millersville. As an alum and now professor here at Millersville, it is a wonderful, inclusive environment that invests in its students.

What does it mean to wear Green?
GREEN IS THE COLOR of Michael’s favorite pro football team, its many shades remind him of nature, and it is his favorite color. But green is also the color of Water Street Mission’s Residential Program, seen through the lanyard men and women wear once enrolled. The Residential Program offers full-time classes, personalized action plans, and the opportunity to find lasting life change over a period of 12 to 18 months.
For Michael, building relationships with other men in the program, as well as with Water Street staff, has proven powerful. WHERE CREATIVITY FINDS ITS VOICE
WHEN CHRISTIAN YECKER sold his software development company in December 2021, he and co-founder Deborah Wissel wanted a fresh idea to utilize the stunning 122-year-old building where the business had originally operated. Partnering with Fig Industries for space consultation and branding, Christian and Deborah decided it would be an ideal location for an artists’ hub right in Lancaster’s west end.
Although a tech guy at heart, Christian has been surrounded by artists and musicians for his entire life, which instilled a deep appreciation for the arts. He believes in the beauty of community and creative expression that happens when artists and creatives gather.
With years of running a successful business under their belts, Christian and Deborah are excited to take a leap on this new venture, strategically choosing to operate Urban Arts House as a nonprofit so it can evolve and be a true resource for the community.
Named as a nod to famed architect C. Emlen Urban who originally designed it as a private residence for Herman F. Wohlsen, the historic gem will primarily be a space for artists of all kinds to rent studio space on the second and third floors—giving them a home for inspiration and collaboration.
Urban Arts House will also feature a beautiful common space and art gallery on the first floor along with a full kitchen and a small performance space and classroom in the back.
“We’re excited to meet and work with like-minded people so this space can see its full potential,” Christian shared.
Officially opening for First Friday on November 1, Urban Arts House is an exciting addition to Lancaster’s art scene.

THE MONARCH BUTTERFLY is the global symbol for migration and the recent subject of a new mural on the side of SACA’s Centro Hispano. The resident-conceptualized mural, painted by local muralists Salina Almanzar-Oree and Claudia Rojas, also features vignettes of the neighborhood’s history embedded in the wings as well as the hand of a neighbor named Jesus releasing the symbolic creatures.
With an emphasis on creating a cleaner and greener space for local residents, neighbors also joined in planting native milkweed to enhance the mural into a more three-dimensional public art piece as live monarchs will soon pollinate there.
Projects like these reinforce SACA’s mission to pursue a unified community where everyone has the opportunity to advance by inspiring them to identify and fulfill their unique purpose wherever they are. Learn more at sacapa.org.

Fresh Face: Spanish Island Foods
WITH A FOCUS ON VIBRANT
Spanish and Caribbean flavors, Aaron and Giandrew Handy started Spanish Island Foods in 2020, serving empanadas, pinchos, fries, and sandwiches from their food truck in York.
Although the pair were passionate about sharing their cuisine, starting a business in 2020 made growth hard, but they were resilient, as they are no strangers to facing challenges head-on.
“I had gotten into trouble in my past,” Aaron shared. “But I came home, and I changed my life around. When we would go to try and get hired before we got the food truck, I would get turned down.”
Aaron and Giandrew decided that instead of continuing to apply for jobs, they would start a company that would have the potential to hire people who shared Aaron’s experience, hoping to be a place that would give people a second chance.
During their first year in business, Aaron and Giandrew hustled to expand the menu and foster partnerships with local businesses. When presented with the opportunity to open their first physical location at Lancaster General Hospital in partnership with restaurant incubator
Foodworks, Spanish Island Foods gained momentum, and the couple’s tireless work paid off.
Now, Spanish Island Foods’ third location is up and running at 44 North Queen Street as of summer 2024.
“Food and unity are our dreams, within our community and within our city,” Giandrew said. “We are here to bring together our cultures. We want to represent and bring everybody home.”

Committed to creative entrepreneurs
WHEN PRISCILLA TORRES opened her hair studio, Braids by Scilla, she needed a financial partner to meet the needs of her business.
“A friend referred me to Community First Fund Credit Union,” she shared. “It has been a great fit! It is close and convenient to my hair studio, but more importantly, the staff is eager to support me and understands my needs as a small business owner.”
Community First Fund Credit Union and Community First Fund are more than a financial institution. For creative, passionate, and driven entrepreneurs, they are a game changer.
“Community First Fund has always had my back,” said Alexandra Dwyer, owner of Redeux Vintage. For Alexandra, Redeux is a passion project that grew out of a multivendor marketplace that she helped to found in downtown York. “I fell in love with being a retailer. I left my job as a real estate developer to dedicate myself full-time to expanding our brand to Lancaster in 2017.”
Community First Fund has supported her with expansion funding and in her pursuit of larger, impactful projects. “Being a catalyst in the community isn’t always easy, especially the often complicated tax returns. Community First Fund supports creative catalysts like me when other financial institutions run. I am thankful for their support and partnership over the years.”

– ALEXANDRA DWYER, OWNER OF REDEUX VINTAGE
Another creative catalyst is Dr. Amanda Kemp. Dr. Kemp is an award-winning scholar, author, racial justice coach, and mindfulness mentor. With Community First Fund’s help, Dr. Kemp launched the Mother Tree Community, which is an online education and transformation program. “It helps DEIB leaders and founders on the verge of burnout to regenerate with earth and their ancestors,” she shared. The program teaches steadfast wisdom, patience, cooperation, and powerful communication. It also boasts a top-rated global podcast and an engaged community of followers.

Fresh Face: Third Story Art
SITUATED ON THE THIRD FLOOR of 44 North Christian Street, Third Story Art is a haven for creativity and connection. Featuring private studios, communal workspace, and an art gallery, Third Story is a place where local artists can find community and share their work.
For founders Leah Fox and Stephanie Gibson, making art has been an essential act of self-care. The two met while raising children and balancing careers, handcrafting jewelry as a creative outlet amidst the demands of daily life.
“I found that the practice of being an artist can be very isolating,” Leah said. “I felt a desire or a longing to be alongside other artists.”
Throughout their friendship, Leah and Stephanie have encouraged each other to grow—from experimenting with new mediums like painting to hosting backyard art fairs and envisioning what it might be like to open their own artist studio.
The result of those dreams is Third Story, where the goal is to create supportive connections among local artists, encourage art making, and provide a venue for exhibition.
“Expressing, sharing, and viewing art helps us understand each other better,” Stephanie said. “In addition to showcasing established local artists, we want people who maybe have never picked up a paintbrush to feel like this is a place where they can come and try that in a safe space.”
Third Story’s next exhibit, Color and Texture, will be on view through mid-October. Stop by the gallery to be inspired by the work of local and regional artists.

Fresh Face | Welcoming new organizations to Lancaster City
Fresh Face: Reality Church
AFTER 12 YEARS of cultivating community in Hempfield, Reality Church is opening doors to a new campus at 100 North Queen Street and laying the groundwork for a thriving faith community in the heart of Lancaster City.
“We want to meet people wherever they’re at in their life, journeying with them to find their purpose and find real hope through Jesus,” Joel Pletcher, Lancaster City Campus Pastor for Reality Church, shared. “We’re here to learn about what the city needs and to partner with other organizations and groups that
the city is already working with to provide hope and help to people.”
Each Sunday service will be accompanied by food, music, and a vibrant atmosphere where guests can worship, but Reality Church believes that a faith community is meant to extend far beyond the building where a weekly service is held. As the church establishes itself in Lancaster City, the goal is to meet with neighbors in their homes, get involved with nonprofits and community organizations, and come alongside young professionals as they seek to build impactful careers.
“We are all humans who have messy and broken stories,” Joel added.
“Reality Church is a place for anybody and everybody who is searching for something deeper in their life,” Joel said.
Reality Church invites you to attend its Opening Sunday on September 15, followed by a launch party with food trucks, live music, charcuterie, bounce houses, and more.
Weekly Sunday services will be held at 9 AM and 11 AM . Learn more at pursuereality.org.

MARCYSTONE.ART \ 100 NORTH QUEEN STREET
After building a career rooted in service through business consulting and life coaching, Marcy Stone picked up her paintbrushes as an outlet for herself and her own healing following the loss of her daughter Sydney. A lifelong creative, her painting style quickly evolved to abstract color expressions, where she finds double the joy—first in capturing her own feelings on the canvas and then when others view and find their own meaning in her works. Now with a studio at Lancaster Art Vault, Marcy is delighted to share her message of creating a positive path towards renewed joy through color.
THE COLOR OF MUSIC
Inspired by painting to different genres and sounds, Marcy’s newest body of work captures the feelings evoked by a medley of music. These works will be on display alongside other music-inspired exhibits at Lancaster Art Vault for the month of September, beginning on First Friday.
Peter Stevenson
PETERSTEVENSONART.COM \ 100 NORTH QUEEN STREET
Peter Stevenson is a fine artist and member of the New York Society of Illustrators, whose early childhood was spent in the rural farmlands just beyond the Brandywine Valley in Pennsylvania. His art career took him and his work throughout the East Coast, where his self-defined “editorial surrealism” work has appeared in publications, interiors, and other contexts for high profile clients. Now back in Pennsylvania making his home here in Lancaster, Peter is re-exploring the region and allowing his impressions of it to influence new collections of thematic paintings, which can be seen at his studio in Lancaster Art Vault.
BIOSPHERES III
His latest series focuses on the place where land and sky meet, and rural life happens. The simultaneous contrast of two juxtaposed colors, depicting earth and sky, offers a simple abstract scene that is set for a meeting point. It’s at this intersection—the horizon line— where the buzzing, humming flurry of life and human emotion can be felt, sensed, and imagined.
Kristin Witbeck Lee
KRISTINWITBECKLEE.COM \ SPLASHINGWATERS.COM

Kristin Witbeck Lee is a published poet, accomplished artist, and teacher. Her work has been exhibited at the Houston Museum of Fine Art, Ganondagan in New York, Van der Plas gallery in NYC, and in private collections around the country. As a Tribal Artisan and healer, she seeks to find and share the living essence in people, landscapes, and beloved objects in her work.
Her Haudenosaunee name, Ganä:gah:is, was given by her great-grandmother and means “She Splashes Water.” She uses this name as an inspiration in creating artistic experiences that are fresh and playful, as well as disruptive to normal patterns of thinking and seeing.
SPLASHINGWATERS
Kristin founded and teaches through Splashingwaters, a retreat space and mobile art lab where intensive artistic development, healing, and personal exploration can happen in nature settings. Splashingwaters is based at Solacebrook, a 16-acre sanctuary in Connecticut, with workshops and retreats in Lancaster County and upcoming retreats planned for Brazil and Greece.
Carla J. Fisher
After a 25-year career in financial services, Carla and her husband Ed traveled the country in a 40-foot motorhome. When Ed died in 2013, Carla decided to pursue a completely new passion in her life by going back to school to study art. Armed with a diploma and enthusiasm, she began her career as a studio artist in 2016, creating two- and three-dimensional sculptures with thread. Soon after, she began adding recycled materials and encaustic wax to her creations. Carla is now an accomplished fiber artist who has made a home at Lancaster Art Vault.
A STRAND OF THREAD
“I use thread and throwaways to symbolize how even the tired, used, and totally spent can experience new life. Through free motion machine embroidery, I seek the viewer’s surprise as they realize the sculptured material is simply thread. It’s the reminder and the confirmation that one little strand—or woman—truly can do seemingly impossible things when challenged to do so.”

Christiane David
CHRISTIANEDAVID.COM \ 100 NORTH QUEEN STREET
Born and raised in Belgium, Christiane began painting at the age of eight, following in the creative footsteps of her family. She first began her career as a designer, while continuing to study both oil and watercolor techniques as she participated in many juried art shows and sold her work across Europe. When her family moved to the United States, she became a full-time working artist, creating paintings as vibrant as her personality. Since moving to Lancaster in 2003, Christiane has been a major force in the local arts scene with her Prince Street gallery and now as a resident artist at Lancaster Art Vault.

Fresh Face: M Rose
YOU MAY NOT FIND anyone more passionate about nail design than Mariam Rosado, owner of M Rose nail salon. In January 2024, she relocated to Chestnut Street, bringing with her nearly two decades worth of practicing and perfecting the art and science behind nail design. “My enthusiasm for nails extends beyond a profession— it's a genuine expression of art and connection,” Mariam shared. “Crafting miniature canvases and creating works of art is deeply gratifying.”
Mariam’s initial introduction to nail design came as she grew frustrated with getting nails services that didn’t meet her expectations. That’s when Mariam bought supplies and learned to do her nails at home.
“When I started this journey, my goal was to completely understand how nail products work in order to minimize lifting and breakage so I could express my artistic talents through nail design,” she shared.
In the 15+ years since, Mariam became a nail technician and salon owner, as well as connected with like-minded educators who share her devotion to perfecting this craft. Mariam has the distinction of being one of very few licensed Nail Tech Educators in the state of Pennsylvania, and that has allowed her to offer continued education to up-and-coming nail techs through one-on-one classes and workshops.
A large part of why Mariam has gained such a committed client base are her long-lasting guarantees. “Our nails are beautiful and also durable. That’s really what sets us apart,” she said.
M Rose takes pride in every detail of their process, from prepping the nail to the detailed art they customize while getting to know each client. “It’s a privilege to connect with incredible individuals from diverse backgrounds within my community,” Mariam shared. “We share many moments of laughter, encouragement, and inspiration.”
Always striving to provide her clients with exceptional service, Mariam is opening M Rose Beauty Bar, a full-service beauty salon next door. Clients will experience the ultimate in nail and beauty services, all conveniently located together instead of visiting multiple places for hair, nails, waxing, and other beauty needs.

SOUND LEADERSHIP
REACH HIGH
A series brought to you by High Foundation that introduces you to business and nonprofit leaders who are thoughtfully innovating with a spirit of servant leadership.
Music has always come naturally to Guy McIntosh. Originally from Maryland, Guy and his siblings were fortunate to have instruments all around them growing up, as their grandfather was an accomplished trumpet player. Guy followed in his musical footsteps, and his studies eventually took him to the Royal Academy of Music in London where he earned a Bachelor of Music Performance.
After graduating, he began playing for a number of symphonies, freelancing in London before returning to play across the Mid-Atlantic. At the same time, Guy felt a draw to help advocate for the arts, aiding with marketing and strategic planning for many music, festival, and performance arts organizations.
When the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra, whom Guy had played with at times over the years, had a permanent trumpet opening, he took the opportunity to plant roots here in Lancaster. Then, just three months before the pandemic, Guy put his hat in the ring to step into the role of Executive Director.
“As a musician in the symphony, I noticed concerts being cut and audiences dwindling,” he shared. “The first thing I wanted to do when I took the Executive Director role was really look at the Symphony’s relationship with the community.”
Guy noted the quality of music and musicians LSO was so fortunate to have, and he really began intentionally building relationships with community organizations, other arts organizations,
and other nonprofits. This allowed creative collaborations to already be in the works when COVID-19 challenged the performing arts world.
“We’ve worked hard over the past several years to give people the perspective that the Symphony is fun, engaging, collaborative, and something that benefits the community,” Guy said. “We are really showcasing all that symphonic music can do and creating a welcoming atmosphere for everyone.”
As creativity has flourished under Guy’s leadership, LSO has expanded their programming, especially with youth education programs, as well as the breadth of musical variety for their seasons. He is delighted that the community has responded with renewed support.
“The arts are such a rich part of Lancaster,” he said. “I honestly believe the more art there is, the more opportunities there are. The fact that we have so much here keeps people engaged, and it’s part of what makes Lancaster Lancaster.”
Behind the work Guy does day in and day out, the heart of what fuels him as he propels the Symphony forward is the camaraderie and community that music inspires.
“Being a part of the Symphony, you learn to be a part of something greater than yourself,” he mused. “As musicians, you can sit in a practice room all day and learn music, but there’s nothing like coming together with a group and working towards a common goal. And I think that really applies to life in general.”

EMBRACE THE ESCAPE WHERE LIFE
The Red Rose Film Festival (RRFF) has established itself as a significant cultural event here in Lancaster since its inception in 2019. By bridging global perspectives with local impact, the festival has showcased a diverse array of films while fostering community engagement and creating a buzz around film in Central Pennsylvania.
RRFF is thrilled to announce growth for 2024, with films screening at Zoetropolis and now at Penn Cinema in Lititz.
This expansion is a testament to their support for the film industry and local talent reaching a broader audience.
The festival is collaborating with educational institutions, local businesses, tourism agencies, and vendors to create a dynamic blend of film, innovation, and education. The three-day event will feature an array of programming, including an industry job fair, an immersive speaker series with industry professionals, and behind-the-scenes demonstrations of cutting-edge production technology.
ON THE FOLLOWING PAGES, you’ll find local filmmakers who are making Lancaster County a destination for feature filmmaking, many of which will be featured at this year’s Red Rose Film Festival. F
Arenowned fixture in the performance arts world, Sight & Sound has been bringing stories of the Bible to life on stage for nearly 50 years, attracting audiences from near and far with their captivating casts, dynamic production, and showstopping set designs. Founder Glenn Eshelman, a photographer by trade, brought a cinematic flair to the design of their 300-foot wraparound stage, and over the decades, the Sight & Sound team has continued to add innovative technology to continually elevate their stage productions and most importantly, the stories they are telling.
Their transition into the film space happened organically, and as is common now, because of the pandemic. It was Easter 2020 when their cinematic recording of their “Jesus” show was set to premiere in 800 theaters across the country. As theaters shut down, Sight & Sound was able to connect with an international broadcast company, airing the show for three days to more than 3.5 million people.
“It was our worst economic year,” shared Joshua Enck, President and Chief Story Officer. “But it was our greatest ministry year. That’s when we started to say, ‘Okay, stage production is our backbone, but what if we could explore getting stories to people all over the world through film?’”
Their first project, titled “I Heard the Bells,” was meant to be a short story experiment, breaking from their traditional Bible character lead to craft a story around a figure from history who changed the world because of Christ.
A period film from the 1800s, “I Heard the Bells” was entirely shot in Lancaster County, drawing on the rich heritage and preserved landscape found here. The film was picked up domestically by Universal and internationally by Sony, and that set them on a trajectory to dive into this new medium for Sight & Sound.
“We really felt like that was an open door for us to continue pursuing what was put on our hearts to do,” Joshua said.
The team purchased the land between the theater and the Story Barn where the writers and producers are headquartered, converting it into the back lot they would need as a foundation for future films.
“We learned very quickly that you need an army to make a film, but you don’t need them all year round,” Joshua shared. “We are strategically maximizing the capacity of employees without compromising the stage productions and using our teams in a different ways.”
They are grateful to have connected with the rising and thriving film companies already in Lancaster, while utilizing nearby big city hubs to bring in additional film professionals. Sight & Sound truly believes in keeping things close to home, as Lancaster continues to grow into a film destination.
With their second film, “A Great Awakening,” just announced, the team is hard at work and looking ahead at the exciting new opportunities on the horizon for Sight & Sound Films.
Zoom In
Premiering in 2026, “A Great Awakening” is the sophomore production from Sight & Sound Films. “A Great Awakening” tells the true story of George Whitefield, known as the Spiritual Founding Father for The Great Awakening, which lasted from 1739 to 1770. In an amazing twist of history, one of Whitefield’s closest friends during this time was none other than Benjamin Franklin, a “thorough deist” who became Whitefield’s greatest promoter. The film begins and ends during the chaotic Constitutional Convention of 1787. The disunity amongst the delegates drives Franklin to reflect on his complex faith journey, leading Franklin to deliver a prophetic message during one of the darkest times in the nation’s story.

Transforming LIVES
DR. BETHANY WEAVER WAS FIRST FIT WITH HEARING INSTRUMENTS when she was four years old. Along with her younger brother who also has hearing loss, her family visited many audiologists growing up due to health insurance changes before finding A&E Audiology & Hearing Aid Center. “We started seeing Dr. Elliot when I was 12 and my brother was 8. We stayed with the practice because she always treated us like family and encouraged us to be proud of who we are. She never allowed us to feel limited in any way because of our hearing loss,” Bethany shared.
When Bethany was in high school, Dr. Elliot sparked her interest in the
field of audiology as a career. She invited her to shadow the providers at A&E Audiology, and Bethany worked in various positions at the center throughout her undergraduate and doctoral education.
“In 2015, Dr. Elliot and I volunteered on an audiology humanitarian trip to Haiti to test and fit children and adults with hearing instruments,” Dr. Weaver shared. “That trip solidified my interest in audiology as a career path. Over the past nine years, I joined the audiology team and have had the opportunity to travel with Dr. Elliot all over the world on humanitarian trips. Committed to care
NORA SIEGAL, MD, PHD, was drawn to medicine from a very young age. Originally from New York, she recalls feeling a connection to the people around her as early as three years old, and she says her parents often tell her that was the age she would cry when other kids would start crying.
Dr. Siegal took that deep empathy as she first pursued a PhD in neuroscience while she also earned her MD before completing her residency in ophthalmology. During her training, she worked in a level one trauma center and that sparked a passion for specializing in ocular plastics.
“I found that trauma involving disfiguration was very emotionally charged, and helping others with reconstructive surgery was incredibly rewarding,” she shared.
As she began looking for jobs across the East Coast, Dr. Siegal ultimately decided she could make the most impact by starting her own private practice—LNC Oculoplastics—in Lancaster, where the specialty was much needed.
Oculoplastics is a combination of functional, reconstructive, and aesthetic cosmetic surgery around the eye. Dr. Siegal and her team of five will work with patients on everything from brow lifts to eyelid reconstruction after cancer.
As a private practice, LNC Oculoplastics offers patients a concierge experience, which allows the team to really get to know patients on a personal level and be an asset to the Lancaster community.
“I had no idea how happy I would be outside of New York City, and I feel very connected to this community,” Dr. Siegal said.
