Flourishing new beginnings

Spring is a season of renewal, beauty, and discovery—a time to uncover the simple joys that make life extraordinary. In this special Simple Joys issue, we invite you to explore the vibrant hidden gems that make Columbia so unique.

Our cover model and Fig Authentic, Minh Le, is one such treasure. Minh moved to America from Vietnam in 1994 and now brings her artistry to Columbia, creating stunning custom suits. Her designs have graced New York Fashion Week runways, and you can have one crafted just for you, right here in our city.

As the flowers bloom, there are countless places to find simple joys in Soda City. Take a glass-blowing class at One Eared Cow, traverse the ropes course at Riverbanks Zoo, or treat yourself to a Morelia ice cream paleta. Find new adventures waiting around every turn, from a geocaching exploration of Lake Murray’s Dreher Island or a journey to see the Congaree National Park’s synchronous fireflies light up the night. From the Vista to Five Points, Devine Street, and beyond, these well-loved and fascinating points of interest are hiding in plain sight, waiting to be discovered.

We’re also excited to share some news—our ByFarr team has added a fleet of vintage printing presses! With these timeless tools, we’re ready to serve the Southeast with specialty printing and finishing. My love for print began at the age of nine when a foiled and embossed rose paper sample sparked a lifelong passion. Now, we get to bring that same love for beautiful paper creations to our community.

When you peruse the pages of Fig, you’re seeing the heart of our city—homegrown businesses and services that make Columbia vibrant and alive. This spring, get out and hunt for those extra-special surprises. Like an Easter egg hunt, Columbia is filled with delightful, colorful, and delicious discoveries just waiting to be found.

Happy exploring,

Help Your Employees Flourish

BYFARR DESIGN ACQUIRES CAROLINA LETTERPRESS

Here at ByFarr, we’re ringing in spring with an exciting announcement! We recently expanded our print studio at our Cottontown office, where everything from die-cutting to embossing to foiling is now possible.

When Joe, the owner of Carolina Letterpress, announced he was closing the shop’s doors, we stepped in to preserve this local staple of printing excellence. With our acquisition of Carolina Letterpress, we are now uniting specialty printing capabilities with the ByFarr team’s bespoke creative work.

We’re so excited to continue providing exceptional design, branding, and marketing strategies to clients across industries—now with new capabilities to enhance our unique, high-quality services that set our clients apart from the crowd.

ByFarr Owner and CEO Brynley Farr with Carolina Letterpress Owner Joe Tranquilla.

Carolina Letterpress Project Manager
Brenda Ponder teaching the tools of the trade to Designer Emily Schoonover, Fig Managing Editor and Operations Manager Katie-Grace Ricker, and Creative Director Laura Windham.

Letterpress printing has long been the gold standard for high-quality, tactile printed materials. Originating in the 15th century with Johannes Gutenberg’s invention of movable type, letterpress was the dominant form of printing until the mid-20th century. Known for its deep, impressionable results and artisanal feel, letterpress has enjoyed a resurgence in recent years due to its distinctive, hands-on quality and timeless appeal.

The acquisition includes four presses from Carolina Letterpress: two Kluge presses used for foiling and embossing, a third Kluge press used for die-cutting, and a Heidelberg cylinder press used for die-cutting. ByFarr, which was already home to a Chandler and Price clamshell letterpress and a Heidelberg windmill letterpress, will now encompass a print studio with an expanded suite of design and print services, including die-cutting, foiling, and embossing.

It took AME’s team and two of their large flatbed trailers to move the presses to ByFarr’s Cottontown location.

This move is a dream come true for our whole team—especially our founder, Brynley Farr. As a child, her fascination with printed goods began with the gift of a foiled and embossed rose. Today, that same rose is proudly displayed in our office as a reminder to follow our dreams, love the work we do (like making Fig Columbia !), and always share in the beauty of a job well done.

Authentic Minh Le

From Vietnam to South Carolina: Minh Le makes her mark on Columbia and beyond. With notable accolades—including appearances at New York Fashion Week, features in Women’s Wear Daily Magazine , and a growing list of high-profile clientele such as Dawn Staley, Kamilla Cardoso, and A’ja Wilson—Le has become a defining figure in the fashion world, all while staying rooted in the city she now calls home.

Her creativity blossomed from a young age, often cutting up and reimagining her secondhand clothing to breathe new life into her wardrobe. At the heart of 831MinhLe is a message of love and connection—embodied in the brand’s name, which stands for “8 words, 3 letters, 1 meaning: ‘I love you.’” It’s not only central to her designs but also to the way she grows her business. Her creativity thrives on the deep connection to her Vietnamese roots, and her tenderness for her Soda City community.

“When you love what you do, it’s shown in your work,” explains Minh. “Now as an adult and creative mind, I am free to share my love with my clients. What I love most about what I create for every piece is how hard I strive to make each and every person feel special, beautiful, and loved…one custom piece at a time.”

Launched in 2019, 831MinhLe reflects Minh’s commitment to creating comfortable yet sophisticated clothing that transitions seamlessly from day to evening wear. Whether it’s a well-tailored suit, fabulous ballgown silhouettes, or a sharp-looking blazer, she makes every piece by hand.

“Don’t ask me what sizes I have available, I make this just for you. [Fashion] is about how you want to feel. My clients will tell me their story, and I celebrate with them. My mission is to help women feel as bold and/or as subtle as they wish, sometimes both at the same time,” says Minh. “I wanted to create fashion looks that empower women to express their strength in their businesses, their communities, and their personal lives without sacrificing the feminine.”

Minh is making this all happen from Columbia, driven by and contributing to the art and creativity found in our capitol city.

Minh’s favorite thing about Columbia? “The people and their warmth,” she says. “As an entrepreneur and artist, I also love our vibrant local arts scene, the camaraderie of the small business community and the opportunity to build my dream

without sacrificing my family. While I miss the excitement of the ‘big city,’ I still have a presence there but it is more important to work where I live, work, and play.”

With her intricate designs, colorful fabric swatches, and latenight sketches from her Columbia studio, Minh has shown that inspiration can flourish anywhere—when it’s backed by authenticity and love.

Here’s what Minh says you MUST have in your wardrobe:

“One staple piece that every woman should have in her wardrobe is a classic white button-down shirt. It’s versatile, timeless, and can be dressed up or down for various occasions. You can pair it with jeans for a casual look, tuck it into a pencil skirt for a professional setting, or wear it under a blazer for a polished outfit. Its simplicity allows for endless styling options, making it a must-have in any wardrobe.”

Through academics, athletics, and everyday interactions, students experience what it means to live a life where Christ is evident in every aspect. Social Mission Palmetto

Place Children and Youth Services

Spring is finally here, welcoming bright budding leaves, a wealth of beautiful sunny days, and a new year of Fig! With this first issue of 2025, we are thrilled to introduce all our readers to our new Social Mission for the year: Palmetto Place Children and Youth Services. Over this next Fig cycle, we will spotlight all Palmetto Place does for our Columbia community and beyond.

Ever since its founding nearly fifty years ago by the Junior Woman’s Club of Columbia, Palmetto Place has sheltered over 7,500 teenagers and young adults in need of emergency housing. The organization first began as a shelter for pregnant teenagers and young moms, expanding in 2012 to become a safe space for South Carolina youths who have nowhere else to turn and creating a home centered around care, kindness, and protection.

Palmetto Place operates through two main shelters: The Oaks and Samantha’s House. At The Oaks, unaccompanied teenagers and young adults receive all that would be provided in a safe and stable home environment: long-term housing, food, clothing, and a community of supporters who genuinely care about their health and wellbeing. The Palmetto Place team helps residents become independent by connecting

them with jobs, providing transportation to and from school and work, and saving a portion of each resident’s paycheck so they have a financial nest egg when they leave.

Afterward, residents may live independently or move to Samantha’s House for transitional housing. At Samantha’s House, the apartment-style setting gives young adults a bridge between the group house and living on their own. Each former resident receives a year of additional service from Palmetto Place called Aftercare, where a member of the team calls regularly to check in and ensure they have everything they need to thrive in their next step.

This only brushes the surface of all Palmetto Place offers to teens and young adults in South Carolina. We are immeasurably lucky to have such a giving, necessary place like this in Columbia for those who need it. If you would like to donate to or volunteer with Palmetto Place as they pursue their mission of helping abused or unsheltered youths, please call 803.350.9323. Scan the QR code to learn more.

Enjoy the view

Don’t let cloudy vision, difficulty seeing at night, or seeing faded colors keep you from taking in the scenery. The board-certified and fellowship trained doctors at Columbia Eye can tell you if it’s time for cataract surgery. Even seniors who have worn glasses all their lives have options as part of cataract surgery that can allow them to perform most of their everyday tasks glasses-free.

LawRosa Hart’s journey into real estate wasn’t planned—it was a calling that found her. While pursuing her dream of becoming a doctor, life took an unexpected turn when her grandfather became ill.
