WHO DOESN’T LOVE A COZY WINTER’S EVE? As the nights get longer and the temperatures drop, we’re showcasing local shop owners who bring home that cozy winter feeling, restaurants who are cooking up new comfort dishes, and nonprofits who are making Lancaster a welcoming place to call home.

We hope you’ll carve out a few minutes to curl up with your favorite beverage and enjoy this edition of Fig. We created it just for you—to keep you connected to the City of Lancaster, get to know your neighbors, and find out what makes Lancaster home for the holidays.

But first, it’s time to shop local! We’re bringing you our third annual Lancaster City Retail Guide, made possible by our partners: Discover Lancaster, City of Lancaster, Willow Valley Communities, and Zamagias Properties. This year, the guide is pocket-sized and available onsite at each of the 90+ local retailers in Lancaster City. Look for ‘Shop Local’ signs on the ground in front of each retailer and make a day of it. Find out more on page 4.

Another tradition that we hold near and dear is our annual Giving Guide where we feature the hardworking nonprofits of Lancaster, starting on page 72. Find a cause you care about, and please consider supporting these impactful organizations with your donations or your time.

Before you settle in for a long winter’s night, we have a sweet surprise! Open to page 60 and find tear-out holiday cookie recipes. Our friends at Garden Spot Village shared their heritage recipes with us, and after lots of delicious deliberation, Ann Fulton of The Fountain Avenue Kitchen chose her favorite eight—you can see the sweet results above. Get baking and make new cookie traditions of your own. (Snap a photo and send it our way by tagging @figlancaster!)

Thank you for taking time to read Fig. We hope you see some familiar faces, meet some new friends, and find plenty of ways to buy local and get involved in your community. We promise that it will help you feel warm and cozy this holiday season and beyond.

Warm holiday wishes, Deb Brandt & the Fig team

Fresh Face: Inna’s Pierogi Shop

FOUNDED BY INNA and Aleksey

Kondramashin, Inna’s Pierogi Shop has been Lancaster’s go-to place for fresh pierogies for years. When the Kondramashins decided to sell their business, they searched for people who would value what was already established and bring fresh ideas for growth. For Inna, Emily Gonzalez and Michael Ortiz were the perfect fit.

“Pierogi has a lot of history in it, and I knew if someone can appreciate and value that, they will keep the tradition and flavor alive,” Inna shared. “Emily and Michael brought an energy and vision that I was looking for to grow the business.”

The duo is ready to carry this Lancaster mainstay into its next chapter. “Once I took a look at the numbers and the location and everything that would come with the sale, it just made sense for us to take it over,” Emily said.

Inna’s pierogi dough and gourmet fillings are made fresh at the shop each week. Every batch of pierogi dough is vegan, crafted with house-made oat milk. While the heart of the company and the pierogies so many know and love will stay the same, Emily and Michael are excited to expand the flavor selection with new menu items, introducing flavors like buffalo chicken, chicken cheesesteak, and chicken bacon ranch, which will be served alongside specialty sauces and dips.

Pierogies are currently sold at Lancaster Central Market, Inna’s Pierogi Shop in Lititz, and can now be purchased on all major delivery services.

“We wanted to be able to offer them to people who are at work or are unable to come to either of our locations,” Emily shared. “We’re excited about growing our delivery services and the growing the wholesale program, as well as getting our pierogies into local restaurants and breweries.”

Shop online or find the flavors you love at a store near you at innaspierogishop.com.

COMPASSION LEADING WITH

REACH HIGH

A series brought to you by High Foundation that introduces you to business and nonprofit leaders who are thoughtfully innovating with a spirit of servant leadership.

Throughout her years of service to the Lancaster community, one simple yet powerful belief has guided Shelby Nauman from one chapter to the next with empathy. “I feel like storytelling is the great equalizer,” Shelby shared. “Because if you see someone, and you don’t know what brought them there, you feel much more connected and willing to help and step in on behalf of another human being if you know their story.”

A native of Lancaster County and alum of nearby West Chester University, Shelby first employed the power of storytelling at WGAL—first as a videographer and then as an assignment editor. When she began to look for a new position where she could still make an impact but with daytime hours, she joined the municipal team at City Hall.

It wasn’t long until she got connected with what was then known as James Street Improvement District—now known as Lancaster City Alliance— where she worked for 14 years of her career.

“It was an amazing opportunity to be hyper focused on neighborhoods in Lancaster City and get a front seat to the work being done to invest in the city’s revitalization,” Shelby said.

As more people began moving into cities here and nationwide, Shelby, like many others, began to see a rising issue with housing. Her understanding of both the history and potential of the community stirred a new passion for ensuring everyone in Lancaster could thrive, starting with a place to call home.

Shelby joined Lancaster Housing Opportunity Partnership (LHOP) in 2018 where she was

“I’m thankful for the mentors I’ve had who’ve listened to me and helped me find solutions by asking good questions.”

instrumental in the 2021 merger with fellow nonprofit Tabor to optimize the services the two organizations were providing the local community.

Now known as Tenfold, Shelby stepped into the role of CEO for the organization in May 2022, where she leads an exceptional team, still rooted in that belief in the power of story.

“I truly believe in listening twice as much as you talk,” she shared. “And I’m thankful for the mentors I’ve had who’ve listened to me and helped me find solutions by asking good questions.”

As housing affordability continues to be at the forefront of community conversation, Shelby and her team at Tenfold are committed to problem solving as they reach out to neighbors and continue providing a continuum of services for people to achieve equity housing and financial security.

Meet the 2024 Fig Tree grantees

AT FIG INDUSTRIES, we’re excited about the future of Lancaster City and are proud to be a small business here for the past 20+ years.

We planted The Fig Tree to leave a legacy of support and encouragement for small business owners—a fund through Lancaster County Community Foundation that will live on for generations.

In its first year, we were delighted to award seven $5,000 grants to businesses who have big dreams to innovate and expand. Our commitment was greatly amplified by business partners and individuals who believe in the importance of a strong small business community. We could not be more thankful to Cargas, Work Wisdom, and Trout CPA— along with several individuals—for joining us.

This year, The Fig Tree is honored to support the new ideas of: ESOarts, INGOMA Films, Lancaster Gift Box, PAVAA Gallery, Pham Enterprises, Pocket Books, and RichStitch Embroidery. Please join us in cheering them on as they unveil projects that include: a video project, a new product line, a collaborative artist space, an outdoor mural, an inclusive community space, and more.

As we kick off year two of The Fig Tree, please consider a tax deductible donation through Lancaster County Community Foundation. Donate at lancfound.org/fund/the-fig-tree.

Warmly, the Fig Industries team

At Fig, we’ve been on mission for nearly two decades to celebrate entrepreneurs and contribute to the vitality of Lancaster City through the small magazine with a big heart that you hold in your hand. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to extend that mission through The Fig Tree.

Fresh Face: Mayhem’s Bookstore & Board Game Cafe

DREAMT UP BY BROTHERS

Peter Milazzo and James Leavy, Mayhem’s Bookstore & Board Game Cafe is an imaginative community space that encourages connection over cups of coffee and friendly board game competition. The cafe’s name was inspired by a Dungeons and Dragons character James played with for many years, inspiring a lifelong passion for the gaming community.

“Mayhem itself was a character that inspired the community and spoke to

everything we want the space to be,” Peter shared. “I want our cafe to be a community playing place, where you go to hang out with your friends, play games, and read books.”

At its core, Mayhem’s is a family business where the brothers each channel their specific passions and experiences into the business. James brings a lifelong passion for reading, along with retail management experience, and Peter brings two decades of military and business leadership experience. Additionally, their cousins, Rabeya and Matt, will be joining the venture. Rabeya will be exercising her skills in the culinary world as an accomplished baker and chef for the cafe, and Matt will be bringing his extensive board game background to the game floor.

Inside Mayhem’s, a 13-foot leather couch, hanging chairs, bean bags, and coffee tables create an abundance of cozy

spaces to read or game. Guests can expect Sunday evening events to become a regular occurrence, with puzzle races, speed dating, Mario Kart tournaments, and movie nights, among many other events.

“This place is all-inclusive for the community to really have fun,” Peter added.

Fresh Face: Maejean Vintage

PROUDLY FEMALE- AND FAMILY-OWNED, Maejean Vintage began as an online-only business based in Lancaster in 2010. Founded and led by sisters Laura Mae and Amanda Jean, who are both GIA Graduate Gemologists, the business has flourished over the past 14 years, including a growing all-female, GIA-educated team.

For several years, the sisters had a desire to share more of their passion for antique

and vintage jewelry with the city they love. When the perfect spot opened up for them to move their headquarters, Laura and Amanda were thrilled to have a larger space to accommodate in-person shopping appointments at their new Duke Street studio.

“We take great pleasure in providing personalized shopping to all our clients,” they shared. “Transitioning from an exclusively online presence to in-person interactions has been both exhilarating and rewarding!”

With the backdrop of the historic beauty of Lancaster through the windows of their space, Laura and Amanda will continue saving and restoring their meticulously sourced pieces to the delight of their clients.

“We love connecting pieces to the perfect owner, where they can be cherished again!” the sisters said. “Each piece tells a story, and we take great pride in ensuring these treasures will be celebrated and enjoyed for generations to come.”

This holiday season, the Maejean team encourages you to set up a private appointment in their stunning new space, where they will tailor the selection and service to your personal style and needs.

“It is a true privilege to be among Lancaster City’s thriving business landscape!” they added. “We warmly invite everyone to come visit us as we open our doors to the community.”

Fresh Face: Tandem Center for Shared Business Success

WHEN CHIP CARGAS —founder of the Lancaster-based software company Cargas—transitioned to semi-retirement, he began to think about what was next for him. Inspired by the culture built at Cargas through profit sharing and direct employee ownership, Chip began to dream of a way to help other companies use employee ownership to create more shared success. The result of that dream is Tandem Center for Shared Business Success, a recently launched nonprofit whose objective is to empower business owners with the advantages of these programs—which include recruiting and motivating employees, improved business performance, and incremental transition of ownership to the next generations.

“I love how it works for all generations,” Chip shared. “At Cargas, we have the

second generation of employee owners selling stock as they approach retirement, just as I did. And the third generation is now starting down that same path.”

Tandem’s efforts are guided by Chip’s vision and led by Executive Director Drew Mousetis, who is especially passionate about employee ownership, which he cites as a transformative force in his life and career.

“My Lancaster journey began as a client of The GateHouse, a nonprofit drug and alcohol treatment organization, where I got back on my feet and found purpose in helping others,” Drew shared. “While pursuing my MBA, I studied the culture around employee ownership, specifically at Cargas, and after joining their team and becoming an employee-owner, I found a deeper purpose to my work.”

Supported by Chip and Tandem’s other Board members, Drew is eager to walk alongside businesses at any stage and of any size, as they build an ownership mindset into the culture for the benefit of the business, employees, and the community.

“I see Tandem becoming the leading expert in the Direct Employee Ownership model in the United States, and I envision Lancaster County, which is already a special place, becoming renowned for its employee-owned businesses,” Drew said.

Business owners who are interested in exploring their pathways to shared success and employee-owned businesses looking to network should reach out to Drew directly at dmousetis@tandemcenter.org.

THE LANCASTER COUNTY SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY (LCSWMA) MISSION Managing Waste as a Resource to Protect and Benefit Our Community

STEPPING INTO A NEW ROLE AS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR,

Dan Youngs has been with Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority (LCSWMA) for five years—previously serving as the Chief Financial Officer. A native to nearby Lebanon County, Dan’s career has led him through business and finance opportunities at several industrious companies in Lancaster over the years. When he joined the LCSWMA team, especially as he assumed new leadership in this role, Dan saw all those past experiences fold into one.

Dan’s vision as Executive Director is to build on the decades of momentum LCSWMA has built, eager to lead a team of talented individuals across multiple disciplines, all of whom share LCSWMA’s passion for doing what is right.

“We have a standard that is above most—and that involves doing what is right for the environment and community, not what is easiest,” Dan shared. “I’m looking forward to maximizing resources to serve and benefit our community.”

Two of those resources are LCSWMA’s Lancaster Waste-to-Energy (WTE) facility in Lancaster County and the Susquehanna Resource Management Complex (SRMC) facility in Harrisburg. In Lancaster County, they take around 95 percent of municipal solid waste (MSW) to the WTE facility, where they combust it to create electricity. LCSWMA takes great pride in the fact

that the waste-to-energy facilities produce energy that is truly clean and renewable.

Waste-to-energy is a crucial aspect of LCSWMA’s integrated system, which creates a closed-loop system for managing community waste. LCSWMA’s unique multi-faceted approach has earned national recognition, paving the way forward for decades.

“We take great pride in knowing we are a core utility for this community,” Dan said. “And failure isn’t an option. That’s why we are investing in longterm planning, innovation, and problem solving, as well as supporting customers and municipalities through educational programming.”

WASTE-TO-ENERGY BENEFITS

J Reduces the volume of waste by 90% so less material is landfilled

J Generates Tier II Renewable Energy to power over 30,000 local homes and businesses

J Reduces greenhouse gas emissions by combusting the waste instead of landfilling it

J Recovers metals for recycling

Follow LCSWMA on social media to stay up to date with important initiatives and helpful waste management tips so you can join in creating a more sustainable future for us all.

PET PANTRY STARTED in its co-founder’s living room, where she collected dog and cat food to distribute to families experiencing economic hardship. From helping people be able to keep their beloved pets to providing life-saving veterinary care for rescued dogs and cats, Pet Pantry has grown to be a cornerstone for resources for animals in need. Currently, Pet Pantry’s core services—Feed, Fix, Rescue—are limited by space and zoning, as they can only provide same-day services for dog rescues and are at capacity for their Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate, Return (TNVR) program for feral cats. Recently acquiring a serendipitous property just a quarter mile away on Columbia Avenue, Pet Pantry is excited to soon open their second home: The Dog Adoption and Feral Cat Surgery Center.

The new facility will be made possible by charitable gifts to a $1.5 million campaign. Naming opportunities are available to honor a loved one or special pet. Invest in the future of Lancaster County’s dogs and cats through a gift to Pet Pantry.

Neighbors They Serve

Since 2012, Pet Pantry has served more than 2,700 families, facilitated over 4,600 pet adoptions, and performed 10,200 TNVR surgeries to control the feral cat population.

PARTNERS IN THE FIGHT

“When my mom’s memory reached a level where she could no longer safely care for herself, we turned to Brethren Village, where they provided compassionate care when we could not be there. After she passed, I became an advocate for Alzheimer’s to help others navigate the difficulties memory loss brings to families.”

Memory loss, confusion, and loss of words are just a few early signs of Alzheimer’s or dementia. The changes are often gradual, but for the patient and their loved ones, the shift can be difficult and overwhelming.

In Lancaster County, approximately 12,000 individuals who are 65 and older have been diagnosed with the disease. While research and breakthrough advancements have been made on diagnosing and treating the illness early, much more is needed.

If you or a loved one has received a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or other form of dementia, support is available.

If you want to get involved like Kevin, join them at alz.org/walk.

BENCH MARK PROGRAM BEGAN WITH

A SIMPLE VISION to serve and mentor youth identified as “high risk” through a shared interest of weightlifting. Initially offering free personal training services, students eventually realized the gym was more than just a place for physical exercise. It was a safe, positive space to teach hard work, goal setting, and grit. As the Bench Mark family grew, so did the potential of the youth they were mentoring, and a new expanded mission emerged. Now equipped with staff and volunteers in a variety of disciplines, Bench Mark is proudly raising up the next generation of community leaders one strength and skill based program at a time. 100 DREAMS FOR LANCASTER

CELEBRATING THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE LANCASTER COUNTY COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

IN 1924, A GROUP OF VISIONARY FUNDERS established the Lancaster County Community Foundation, and this year, the Community Foundation is honoring them—and you! For the last 100 years, the generosity, innovation, and commitment to our shared community established a culture of collective philanthropy that has shaped our community. Now, it’s our turn. We want to know what you care about and how you will be part of changing the next 100 years.

To mark this milestone anniversary, Fig and the Community Foundation teamed up with portrait photographer Jenny Foster to highlight the dreams of members of the Lancaster community throughout the year.

On behalf of both the Community Foundation and Fig, we invite you to dream, invest, and work toward a thriving, inclusive, resilient future for all who call Lancaster County home today and tomorrow.

Experience, Above All™

The Armstrong World Industries Foundation (AWIF) supports communities by ensuring access to services and spaces that allow every individual to thrive while investing in organizations that embolden people to live better and healthier lives. Since 1985, that investment has totaled more than $50 million.

The foundation strives to ensure everyone in the communities where

Armstrong World Industries operates has access to healthy and beautiful spaces, and primarily makes financial contributions to projects and organizations that make these communities stronger. This year they provided a $100,000 renovation grant to the Lancaster Food Hub to assist in their capital campaign. These funds will help renovate a 5,500 square foot space to co-locate their homelessness programs alongside food and clothing services.

As a company, Armstrong World Industries also donates products to projects that will maintain and improve the spaces where communities gather.

To date in 2024, AWIF has awarded nearly $360,000 in Building Better Grants to organizations in Lancaster County. In addition, AWIF dedicates almost $125,000 annually in support of United Way and other organizations.

Lancaster Warm Up

STARTED BY WOODCREST VILLA RESIDENTS Pat Smith and Ginny Chambers in 2006, the “Critters” are a group of women who knit and crochet. Meeting once a month to make afghans, their work was first donated to a national organization called “Warm Up America,” which encourages volunteers to make afghans and donate them to their community.

Each person made squares in their leisure time in their home, and squares were

then matched and sewn together with the edges to finish each one. The resulting blankets were donated to groups in Lancaster like Claire House, Conestoga View, and Milagro House, among others.

Eighteen years later, the group has changed their name to Warm Up Lancaster to better reflect what they do, as they continue to keep people warm through the work of their hands.

Woodcrest Villa provides a welcoming environment for a fulfilling life. Residents make life meaningful by pursuing their passions and hobbies— from singing to gardening and everything in between.

One-of-a-kind care

JODY HAS A LONG HISTORY OF CAREGIVING —from 16 years as a dental assistant and volunteering in hospice care to raising her own children and taking on a new role as grandmother after they were grown.

When Jody found herself with chronic headaches from raising her eyebrows to see, her eye doctor noticed and referred her to Dr. Nora Siegal, MD, PhD, at LNC Oculoplastics to address an issue with her eyelids.

“From the moment we met, Dr. Siegal and I just clicked,” Jody shared. “Trust is a big thing in the medical field. I had been trusted for so many years as a caregiver, and I was very grateful to find that trust for Dr. Siegal and her team.”

Throughout the process of her procedure, Jody was thoughtfully taken care of each step of the way—from consultation to post-operative care.

“ It’s a loving practice. When you come in, they are happy to see you and answer your questions. They make sure you have all the information and feel comfortable— and my end result was wonderful.”
