WELCOME TO THE SPRING ISSUE

OF FIG. It’s hard for me to believe that this past January marked my 25 th year of owning a marketing studio and nearly 20 years of this little book of love for Lancaster City called Fig. I am forever grateful for the opportunity to build a business in this community and for the gift of finding purpose in my work in this amazing city of creative entrepreneurs.

Orthopedic Group, we have a sponsored section on the joy of movement, where you’ll find an array of opportunities to stay active and have fun doing it.

A note from Fig

I believe this moment in history is the right time to refocus on why we brought Fig into the world—with its simple mission to connect readers to our perfectly imperfect community of makers and doers. For nearly two decades, we’ve had the joy of connecting people to local businesses and encouraging the community to pursue a more meaningful and locally-rooted life. Because isn’t finding joy in your own community what it’s all about?

In this issue, we showcase small joys like pastel cotton candy or a spoonful of honey that makes life just a little bit sweeter. We’ve also highlighted local experts who help with the big joys—like a wedding day or milestone celebration that’s planned to perfection and remembered for a lifetime. And thanks to our friends at Lancaster

One of our joys here at Fig is finding a way to surprise and delight you, our readers, with something unexpected. Tucked in this edition is an announcement for the long-anticipated groundbreaking of Mosaic by Willow Valley Communities, where you’ll find a fold-out map of our beloved city that showcases some of the assets this new landmark will have to offer. If you’ve lived here all your life or if you are one of the many new neighbors who have chosen to move to Lancaster City, we hope this map will inspire you to explore and cherish this special place you call home.

Amongst all this joy, our team is also grieving alongside the community on the passing of one of Lancaster’s finest—our teammate Bill Forrey. Bill, we miss your smile, your wit, and your words of wisdom. We dedicate this joyful issue to you, and as your “Billisms” instruct, we’ll remember to put a smile on our face before we get out of bed.

Sincerely,

Share the JOY

MORE MUSIC.

THE MUSIC FOR EVERYONE (MFE) SOUND FACTORY is an after-school music program hosted at The Ware Center, featuring strings, percussion, brass, and woodwind. Youth musicians build community and confidence with guidance from musical instructors, and MFE underwrites all after-school programming—allowing students to attend at no cost and expanding the musical opportunities available to them.

Sound Factory is just one of the ways MFE provides resources and experiences in support of music education to transform lives, schools, and communities here in Lancaster. And MFE has big news! This year, they are multiplying their impact with expanded programming for all ages at The Ware Center just in time for their 20 th anniversary in 2026. Stay tuned as they bring MORE music and MORE community to Lancaster.

Fresh Face: Chellas Arepa Kitchen

SINCE CHELLAS OPENED in 2018, Lancaster County foodies have embraced the savory South American dishes served from a humble food truck on Hempstead Road. After nearly a decade of hard work and great food, owner Luis Quiroz is thrilled to welcome his family of customers to a new restaurant concept on the 300 block of Queen Street.

“Growing up, my family and I worked in restaurants, and we always had ideas about one day having our own restaurant,” Luis shared. “It’s been my dream for over a decade.”

With the opening of Chellas’ second location, that dream is now a reality. Even with expanding its space and menu, Luis and his team aren’t forgetting the foundation their food truck built and the classic arepas from their Hempstead location that landed Chellas on Yelp’s Top 100 list numerous times.

“We were able to translate the soul from the other Chellas,” Luis said. “And we’re excited to have a bigger kitchen so we can bring grain bowls, salads, smoothies, and the famous Peruvian ceviche.”

With the addition of these innovative twists on South American cuisine, Chellas will continue to serve up a 100% gluten-free menu, including their popular arepas, tender honey barbeque roasted pulled pork, chicken marinated with house made chimichurri, strips of perfectly sautéed steak, and a host of vegetarian options. The new location will offer extended hours, and its prime spot in Lancaster City means arepas are just a short walk away for city residents and visitors.

“Chellas is excited to be downtown,” Luis said. “I think a lot of our support was always from the city, and now they don’t have to drive to enjoy our food.”

Stop by to enjoy Chellas’ piping hot arepas, hearty quinoa grain bowls, and fresh smoothies six days a week, or order online at eatchellas.com.

The Watchmaker of Filmmakers

FOR OVER 130 YEARS, Hamilton has been a prominent player in marking the passage of time. The Lancaster-founded company first stepped into its starring role in 1932’s “Shanghai Express” and has since been the premier watchmaker for filmmakers. As the brand grew to international renown, its connection to the movie industry paved the way for countless roles in over 500 movies and television shows, including “Interstellar” and “Men in Black.” Now that Hamilton has proudly opened a flagship store on Duke Street, where its roots were first planted, local filmmakers are joining the host of other cinema artists who choose Hamilton.

H Derek Dienner is wearing the Hamilton Khaki Field Murph 38mm

I got into filmmaking because there is only one ‘today,’ and the only way to prepare for the future is to learn from the past. I want to capture this present day that we’ve been gifted through movie making, as a modern-day scribe, so I can preserve the moments that make us who we are. That’s why I do this.”

Fresh Face: Wired Cup Cafe

IF YOU ASKED A YOUNG KELSI MARTIN WHAT SHE WANTED TO BE growing up, she might have told you she would open a bakery. It wasn’t the long hours or unlimited access to sweets that drew her to bakery ownership—it was her vision of creating a business from scratch.

In 2022, Kelsi opened the first Wired Cup Cafe in Ephrata. Two years later, the cafe is making a second home on Duke Street, serving New York-style bagels alongside strong coffee and mouthwatering sandwiches.

“I make food that I love,” Kelsi said. “Everything on the menu is something that I would eat or make or buy.”

Each week, Kelsi mixes 150 pounds of cream cheese into the shop’s eight signature flavors: plain, veggie, jalapeño cheddar, garlic herb, strawberry, vanilla bean, and French toast, with a surprise flavor rotating in.

“I couldn’t even begin to list how many flavors of cream cheese we’ve made over the years,” Kelsi said, noting flavors like pistachio white chocolate chip and cookie dough among her favorite creations. “The bagels do not have any preservatives in them either so they are fresh daily as well.”

In addition to bagels, Wired Cup’s broad menu includes breakfast sandwiches, burritos, cheesesteaks, and burgers featuring the cafe’s signature smoked meats and locally sourced produce. Kelsi recommends starting with the ribeye steak, egg, and cheese bagel or the Babe Ruth—a breakfast cheesesteak with smoked ribeye, scrambled eggs, Cooper Sharp American cheese, peppers, onions, and garlic aioli drizzle on a sub roll. Both sandwiches pair perfectly with the shop’s Signature Cream Cold Brew—a strong brewed iced coffee from Lancaster County Coffee Roasters and a splash of cream topped with cold foam.

“I love food, and there are so many good restaurants in Lancaster City,” Kelsi said. “I’m definitely happy to be a part of that scene now on Duke Street.”

Stop by the shop or order online for a taste of New York at Wired Cup Cafe.

In Memoriam | Bill Forrey

Here at Fig Industries, we had to say goodbye to a dear friend and teammate, Bill Forrey.

For nearly four years, Bill welcomed everyone who popped their head into his office at Fig with a warm smile and a word of advice. He was our Kit Distribution Manager, making sure that our Fig Welcome Home Kits were ready to go out on time each month. And he did it with finesse, in between his golf games, outings with friends, and enjoying semi-retirement with his beloved wife Linda and his family.

Bill loved people. The white board in his office shared his words of wisdom. We called them Billisms, and our favorite was “Nothing is funnier than people.” He was a storyteller at heart and loved to share with us

the curiosities of human behavior, much of it learned during his long and prosperous career as a salesperson in the construction industry.

Bill led a life well-lived, collecting friends far and wide. In his 80 years, he left his mark in laughter and kind words. We knew he loved our team of creatives, giving us “Billy Brownie Points” when we lent a helping hand and documenting our team outings with photos he captured on his phone.

Bill taught us to appreciate life and drink it in. He said we kept him young. We know he made us wise.

Thank you, Bill, for spending time with us. We will miss you.

Love, Your Figgy Team

Fresh Face: Longevity Lancaster

WHEN JILLIAN WOJDYLA RELOCATED to Lancaster for her husband’s job in 2017, she never imagined the community she would find and build as she founded her own fitness boutique. An ACE Certified personal trainer, health coach, and fitness nutrition specialist, Jillian first opened Longevity Lancaster in 2021 at the corner of North Queen and West Walnut. The lower-level space was small, but it was just what Jillian needed to start coaching clients one-on-one, especially coming out of the pandemic.

Over time, the Longevity community flourished, and following a shoulder surgery in 2023, Jillian realized she needed to bring on additional trainers to support the growing demand for their specialized coaching and training programs. For over a year, she and her team balanced the challenges of the smaller location until the perfect opportunity opened in the Keppel Building, where Longevity Lancaster now calls home.

Throughout the business’ four-year journey, Jillian has held fast to her philosophy that fitness should not only be about weight loss but more about investing in how your body feels and what it can do. By offering individualized workouts, she and her three trainers work hand-in-hand with clients to get to know

them personally, keep them accountable, and celebrate every milestone achieved along the way.

“Clients aren’t showing up just for me or my colleagues. They’re showing up for themselves and taking ownership of their workout—and that helps them reach their goals,” Jillian explained.

With the added square footage, Jillian is excited for the increased capacity of the space. She plans to start a hybrid model program in the spring, where clients can get customized programming from one of the trainers to use on their own when they come to the gym. While Longevity Lancaster will still specialize in individual or buddy coaching, they are also looking to start a small group workout on Saturday mornings to continue offering options at different price points.

“All in all, I’m just grateful to still be on this block and in Lancaster City,” Jillian said. “The people here are really supportive of small business, and that’s one of the things that makes Lancaster and being part of this community so great.”

Whether you are looking to start a regular fitness routine, get coaching on where to start, or work through an injury safely, contact Longevity Lancaster for a consultation in their new space.

Fresh Face: BoriMex Mini Mart & El Jibarito

AS A LONG-TIME LANCASTER RESIDENT, Melissa

Hernandez is proud to be the owner behind two thriving businesses—El Jibarito and BoriMex Mini Mart—in the same city where she grew up.

“This is my city—I grew up on South Plum Street so a lot of people remember me,” Melissa said. “And now I have very loyal customers. They love the block, and they love the food.”

El Jibarito is a cuchifrito, which is a Latin fried food restaurant. A colorful fixture on the corner of Dauphin and Lime streets, the restaurant serves empanadas, pinchos, potato balls, rice and beans, plátano maduros, and other Puerto Rican dishes. For first-time visitors, Melissa says the beef and cheese empanada is a must-try.

Melissa’s family, especially her children, are her biggest cheerleaders. They are the ones who keep her in pursuit of her dreams, despite the challenges of entrepreneurship. Especially inspired by her late father, Melissa learned the value of building strong ties to the place you live from his legacy.

“My father was the head of the Puerto Rican Cultural Center in Lancaster. He was in charge of all the events, and I would always

help him,” Melissa reflected. “He was also a policeman here with the city for many years, and everyone knew him.”

Melissa has channeled that same spirit into her newest venture, BoriMex Mini Mart. This all-purpose bodega on South Lime Street stocks quick bites, including El Jibarito empanadas and a selection of grocery and household items.

“Everybody comes in the morning and has the same routine,” Melissa said. “They get their cup of coffee, their milk and eggs, maybe an empanada.”

When deciding what to stock at the store, she leans on customer input.

“If they say, ‘I would like gouda cheese or turkey bacon or Lactaid milk—do you have that?’ I write it down, and then I get it in the next few days,” Melissa shared. “If you need something, I’ll have it stocked for you.”

Place your empanada order at eljibaritolancaster.com or visit BoriMex Mini Mart to grab one fresh to-go.

Fresh Face: Gourmet Market Lancaster

JULIE NDJEE STARTED HER ENTREPRENEURIAL

JOURNEY 20 years ago out of a drive for something better.

“As a working woman with a family, it was very difficult to find healthy options at the supermarkets,” Julie said. “We decided to create something that we could easily make at home but without colors, fillers, and sugar.”

This decision led her and her husband Albert to start a small product line, named for one of their daughters, Neilly. It wasn’t long before the Ndjees’ small business grew into a national brand known for its starter sauces, quick-cook beans, and rice mixes, established on the mantra: Three steps. Healthy ingredients. No more than 20 minutes in the kitchen.

As the York-based business evolved, Julie turned her attention to expanding her offerings and found the ideal space in Lancaster City, where Gourmet Market Lancaster now stocks Neilly’s products alongside a range of vendors who meet her same rigorous standard of quality.

“Our shop is unlike a grocery store,” Julie shared. “It’s a food boutique—not with high boutique prices but with good

quality foods. We have samples of everything that we offer so customers can come in and savor the experience here.”

Gourmet Market Lancaster features the flavors of five continents with foods for all to enjoy—from vegan and gluten-free offerings to products for those simply trying to clean up their diet by eating less sugar and incorporating more whole foods.

“People love pasta, people love rice, people love sauces, so we look for those items that are really well-made,” Julie said. “We are centered around meal solutions.”

One of their most popular meal solutions is a weekly meal plan that is available in-store featuring recipes developed and tested by Julie using items in the shop, taking the stress out of both planning and cooking meals.

“I call Lancaster the food basket of the northeast—we have wonderful options here with lush farms and greenery all around us,” Julie said. “We hope to make the shop an experience that Lancaster residents and visitors will remember for a long time.”

Fresh Face: Clear Ice & Bitters

JULIA ADAMS’ JOURNEY TO BECOMING A COCKTAIL SPECIALIST began with her intrigue around cocktail presentation while having drinks with friends after her choral-orchestra performances. A lifelong musician and creative, Julia was living and working in Boston when her husband built an in-home bar where she began experimenting with drinks and hosting private cocktail events for her community.

“What I’ve always found interesting are the elements of a drink— the history, the flavor pairings, the intentionality behind garnishes, the glassware,” she shared.

When her family relocated to Lancaster several years ago, Julia became a professor at Franklin & Marshall College, and in spring of 2024, she decided to take the leap and relaunch Clear Ice & Bitters.

Available to book for a variety of small events and personal gatherings, Clear Ice & Bitters offers an intimate cocktail experience, as Julia creates individualized cocktails for you and your guests in the comfort of your home or at a small venue.

Based on your current mood, the music, your favorite color, or what you plan to eat, Julia builds each cocktail—sharing its history, the process, and answering any questions you may have.

“Call it education or call it entertainment, it is really an interactive exploration of each drink I serve,” she explained.

Julia loves the personal interactions she gets to share during events, and as a mother of a special needs adult, she knows people have many reasons why it may be limiting to go out. Bringing her specialty to her clients’ homes caters to a variety of people and their lifestyles and creates a slower tasting experience that she enjoys most.

As a RAMP-certified bartender, Julia brings all of the elements for an unforgettable experience—mixers, garnishes, glassware, tools—except for the alcohol. She works with clients to help them build a spirit shopping list or can work with bottles you already have. Julia is also well-versed in zero-proof and mocktail options you can choose to serve as well.

A collector of eclectic ingredients and unusual glassware, Julia will add a unique flair to each event while working with her clients to explore their vision for the evening’s drinks.

“This really is a different experience every time,” Julia said. “And that’s what I love about it.”

Ideal event sizes are 2-6 people with offerings for two, three, and four hours. Schedule your experience online for an upcoming celebration or night in.

Fresh Face: POSH Bridal

POSH BRIDAL was founded in 2010 by award-winning bridal gown designer Janell Berté, who worked in the wedding industry for more than four decades. Janell established the Lancaster boutique as a destination for modern brides who wanted elegance, fun, and something truly unique.

When Janell decided it was time to retire in 2024, she already had a trusted and experienced successor in Lily Chow, who had worked and trained under Janell for three years. In her budding career, Lily had a natural gift for guiding brides through the magical experience of finding their dream gown.

“It felt like the right next step in my career,” Lily shared. “And I’m fortunate to have had two strong role models in the industry because my mother is a dressmaker who could co-own the business with me.”

With Lily’s mother Karen—who ran a custom gown business for nearly 30 years—as designer and alterationist, the Chows are ready to carry POSH’s legacy forward with the same luxury experience Janell established, while introducing their own fresh ideas.

Lily is excited to continue sourcing breathtaking couture gowns that will offer brides spectacular, out-of-the-box options while keeping that timeless appeal. In addition to the bridal shopping

appointments Lily leads, Karen is excited to add alterations and gown options for mothers of the bride and groom, as well as bridesmaids, to really round out POSH’s offerings.

Both of them bring their own spark of passion to POSH. For Lily, it’s all about the wow factor when pulling gowns for her brides. “I love to surprise my brides,” she shared. “To find a dress that fits their style but is a little unexpected. It’s that moment where you find the perfect combination to make them feel beautiful and empowered as themselves—the bride they were meant to be!”

And for Karen, it’s all about getting that perfect fit so a bride feels stunning and comfortable on her big day. “I love to create, and I love the art of the fit ,” she said. “It’s very important the gown fits well—I’m very particular about it.”

As the mother-daughter duo take on the 2025 wedding season, Lily and Karen are grateful for the newfound appreciation they have gained for each others’ expertise that come together for an exceptional experience for their brides.

As you look towards your big day, plan your POSH experience for a fun, stress-free environment to find the dress of your dreams!

Meet Brian and Dawn Waltman, co-owners of three wedding businesses in Gordonville, Pennsylvania—Harper Co. Weddings, Stoltzfus Homestead and Gardens, and The View on Harvest Drive. With well over 700 weddings under their belt, the Waltmans head up two venue teams as well as a rental design team who are all passionate about giving each couple the personal, attentive service as they plan their day. Brian and Dawn truly believe that every love has a story to tell, and they make it easy for you to tell yours.

Stoltzfus Homestead and Gardens has a rich history dating back to the 1700s, where homesteaders then built the Grand Barn in the 1800s and the Tobacco Barn in the 1900s as crops grew on the surrounding land. When the property became a wedding venue in 2014, the craftsmanship of the two barns was protected, as couples have now celebrated their love in this historically preserved property for over a decade. Gorgeous gardens, a lighted courtyard area, and an outdoor lounge complete the magical atmosphere.

Fresh Face: Miss Lyss Planning

ALYSSA KURTZ-PRICE was fortunate to plant the seeds to her passion at the age at 14, getting her first taste of the wedding industry by working for a family friend’s catering business. She already had a penchant for serving others, and the magic of watching an event come together for couples and their families started her on the path to wedding planning.

Even in high school, Alyssa knew she needed to understand all facets of the industry to set her up to start a business full-time, and by the time she graduated college, she also had a bridal salon internship and a management and marketing degree under her belt. Post-graduate, she channeled her marketing expertise into a development position with a large local construction company, while keeping her weekends booked and busy with wedding and events working as a planner for a local venue.

It was February 2019 when Miss Lyss Planning, Alyssa’s planning business, was born. The company's weddings tripled in the first five years, even in the midst of a pandemic, and that’s when she knew it was time to take the business full-time for the 2024 peak season.

“I wanted to be a well-rounded planner before starting my own business,” Alyssa shared. “I’ve always known I’ve wanted to do this, and after 15 years, I truly have the experience couples need.”

What continues to fuel Alyssa and her growing team of planners is the peace of mind they bring each of their clients. Miss Lyss takes the time to understand who each couple is, their family dynamics, their vision for the day, and any anxieties they have going into the process—and their clients feel cared for from inquiry through the big day.

“When couples get married, they don’t know what they don’t know because this is the only time they’ve done this,” Alyssa explained. “For our team, we’ve done this hundreds of times.”

The culture of Miss Lyss Planning is rooted in positivity, integrity, and collaboration with couples, guests, and vendor partners.

Whether couples book their event management, partial planning, or the full planning package, their goal is for you to be fully present on your wedding day. When you get a ring, give Miss Lyss Planning one.

Keep Local News Local

“THE NUMBER OF NEWSPAPERS that have been lost in the U.S. is just astonishing. There are so many communities where public officials aren’t being held accountable, and people aren’t learning what’s happening from fair and accurate reporting. Instead, they get rumors and biased perspectives. Local news media is vital to the health of our communities—but they need your support to survive.”

This year, they are excited to announce the launch of an innovative Master of Religion and Public Life (MRPL) degree program— designed for professionals seeking to understand and communicate the intersections of religion and social, historical, political, and cultural contexts in people’s lives.

The 36-hour credit program is set to begin in fall 2025, with applications for the inaugural cohort opening in early 2025. Interested professionals can contact the Seminary’s Admissions Office at admissions@lancasterseminary.edu for more information.

Meet Dillon Cruz

“The Tattooed Theologian”

Dillon graduated from Lancaster Theological Seminary in 2019 and is living out the vision of this nontraditional degree program, which will increase professionals’ competencies working in religiously diverse settings no matter what sector they work in.

At our time in history, it is imperative that we learn from the past, loving our neighbors as ourselves by caring for creation and standing up for the marginalized. Earning my degree from Lancaster Theological Seminary has enabled me to follow my calling by sharing my knowledge with a national audience, and for that, I am grateful.”

Fresh Face: Crazy Pupusas & More

CRAZY PUPUSAS & MORE began in California as Kelly’s Latin Fusion Cuisine, where Kelly Rodriguez poured love and care into preparing food for family and friends at every celebration.

As a resilient, hardworking single mother, Kelly faced many challenges, but her passion for food and family never wavered. “We started from humble beginnings,” Kelly said. “People loved the food, and they could feel the effort and heart we put into every meal.”

When Kelly moved to Pennsylvania, she brought the same time-honored, family-approved recipes with her, eager to build a new community in Lancaster City. In October 2024, the restaurant opened on West James Street, with pupusas at the heart of the menu.

Pupusas—a traditional Salvadoran and Honduran homestyle meal—are griddled handmade corn tortilla stuffed with your choice of cheese and fillings like beans, chicken, or chicharron (a savory pork). Kelly’s new menu also features creative variations

on the traditional recipe, like veggie, salmon, ribeye, pulled pork, fresh mozzarella caprese, crab, and more.

“We wanted to innovate and add a little modern touch on something that’s been cherished for generations,” Kelly said. Each pupusa is served with cheese, pickled cabbage, artisanal tomato sauce, and escabeche—pickled veggies that balance out the flavors. “Everything is made in-house, from the pupusas to the drinks,” Kelly shared. “We offer authentic horchata, freshsqueezed lemonade, Tamarind passionfruit juice—just a few of the refreshing tropical drinks we serve.”

At the heart of the restaurant is Kelly’s unwavering determination and the close-knit, supportive team. The staff at Crazy Pupusas & More share a deep sense of community, with everyone working together not just as coworkers but as a family. “The people who work here and the people who support us—our customers— have become part of our extended family. We are so grateful and blessed for their love and loyalty,” Kelly said.

“We want people to feel at home when they come here,” she added. “It brings us so much joy to see families sharing a meal, just like we’ve always done with ours.”

Visit 300 West James Street and be a part of the story that’s built on hard work and love.

A CENTURY United

UNITED WAY OF LANCASTER COUNTY is marking a monumental milestone: Their 100 th anniversary!

Since its inception in 1925, United Way has been proud to serve as a catalyst for positive change—bringing together individuals, businesses, and organizations to strengthen the Lancaster community.

UNITED WAY THROUGH THE YEARS

IN THE 1940S, United Way of Lancaster County funded partners like the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army, both of which played a crucial role in supporting the war effort and local communities. Despite having distinct missions, the two organizations shared a common focus on assisting both soldiers and civilians during World War II, providing a variety of essential services to those affected by the war.

Rallying to address the immediate need for a low-barrier shelter in Lancaster

THE LANCASTER COMMUNITY IS KNOWN for coming together to take care of neighbors. In December, our community rallied together like never before around the need for a permanent low-barrier emergency shelter in Lancaster City—taking a critically needed step to address the county’s homelessness crisis. The new Clay Street Low-Barrier Emergency Shelter, located on the lower level of Otterbein United Methodist Church, now provides open doors for individuals who are experiencing homelessness and need a safe, warm, and dignified place to sleep and shower.

By meeting these basic needs, individuals can then seek resources— providing a path to permanent housing and a more promising future. Working closely with Lancaster County Homelessness Coalition, supported by dozens of other nonprofits working on homelessness in our county, and operated by the YMCA of the Roses, the shelter opened December 30, 2024. It has reached full capacity, with nearly 80 beds occupied on nights when extreme cold weather has hit Lancaster County. The shelter is working, but help is needed from the Lancaster County community to ensure its long-term success.

PLEASE MAKE A GIFT OR MULTI-YEAR PLEDGE

To provide the necessary funding to support both the cost of construction and operations for the shelter, volunteers and community impact partners from all over the county have been conducting a vital capital campaign fundraising effort. They still need your help to reach the $4.5 million fundraising goal that will complete and sustain this critical community effort.

STORY EVERYONE HAS A

REACH HIGH

A series brought to you by High Foundation that introduces you to business and nonprofit leaders who are thoughtfully innovating with a spirit of servant leadership.

Kim McDevitt is a transformative leader with a love for this community that traces back to her family’s immigration to Lancaster when Kim was just a little girl.

Born in Australia and partially growing up in Kos, Greece, Kim credits her drive and can-do attitude as well as her heart for people to many mentors, especially her father and her maternal grandmother—whose hard work and resourcefulness were transformative in their own right to her family.

“They were entrepreneurs, and family and connectedness were everything to them,” she shared. “My father built an addition onto our home to fit a large table so more of our family could sit around one table for family dinners.”

Inspired by her roots, Kim saw her leadership potential early on. Her aspirations were nurtured throughout her educational career, and her courses in special education and psychology were foundational to her perspective on serving others and intentional collaboration with her peers.

After her children reached elementary school, Kim began to think even bigger when it came to her impact on the community. She has served at many influential nonprofits throughout Central Pennsylvania before taking on her current role as Executive Director of Mental Health America of Lancaster County, where she has guided a passionate team of advocates since 2019.

“MHA has allowed me to bring all my experiences together to serve the community on a broader scale,” Kim said. “I find great fulfillment in making a tangible change in systems and people’s lives, as well as motivating them to embrace that anything is possible.”

“I find great fulfillment in making a tangible change in systems and people’s lives, as well as motivating them to embrace that anything is possible.”

Kim enjoys the challenge of the many roles she manages at MHA—from identifying partner organizations to development to advocating for policy change at the local and state levels. And she is proud of the progress made over the past several years in reducing stigmas and increasing resources here in the community that welcomed her all those years ago.

As Kim’s leadership style has shifted and grown, she has faithfully served this community and instilled in her team the value of authenticity, integrity, inclusivity, and innovation as they continue to drive local impact.

“Every day, I get to work with the most compassionate, dedicated, and brilliant individuals and partners who have dedicated their lives to improve the lives of those living with mental illness,” she said. “This indeed is a blessing not only to me but to our community.”

Everyday miracles

MEET COLTON | SCHREIBER AMBASSADOR

Born with four non-traumatic subdural hemorrhages, Colton sustained permanent damage to his cerebellum, the part of the brain responsible for speech. This has made it difficult for him to form words, coordinate sounds, and express his needs.

At the Schreiber Center, therapy sessions are designed to meet the unique needs of each child. For Colton, that means targeted speech therapy sessions that stimulate his brain’s neuroplasticity. Through targeted exercises that feel like play, his speech therapist Maria helps him overcome obstacles by building new neural connections that strengthen his ability to communicate. Over time, these efforts have enhanced his clarity, increased his confidence, and helped prepare him for a future of possibilities.

Schreiber’s expertise in communication extends beyond in-person care through a new tele-speech program that supports families remotely. This new therapy model ensures access to care for all, so that children like Colton receive the therapy they need to reach their fullest potential.

Colton is just one of over 4,000 heroes that Schreiber serves every year.

SINCE 1936, the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development has provided familycentered, innovative therapy for infants, children, and adolescents with disabilities, developmental delays, and acquired injuries. As a nationally recognized pediatric facility, it is their mission to help kids like Colton reach their fullest potential.

Timeless RESULTS

LACEY SAURBAUGH is a board-certified advanced practice registered nurse practitioner (CRNP), who spent most of her career in women’s health while raising four daughters of her own. In fact, it was her daughters who suggested the name of her new private practice, Feeling 22 Aesthetics, which Lacey opened in fall of 2024.

The name comes from a Taylor Swift song, as Lacey takes inspiration from the strong businesswoman that Taylor Swift is, as well as the joy and community she has witnessed attending concerts with her daughters.

“I want my clients to know I have their best interest at heart,” Lacey explained. “Every service starts with a face-to-face consultation so I can get to know them and build that trust.”

Rooted in her deep knowledge of women’s health and family medicine, Lacey’s heart is in encouraging her patients to take care of themselves. Her mantra is self-care is not selfish,

and she is passionate about guiding her patients on a journey to feeling more like themselves.

“My job is to listen to people so we can address the things that are concerns for them,” Lacey said. “I prioritize understanding both anatomy and the aging process so I can work with my clients on long-lasting and natural looking results.”

Lacey understands that getting any kind of aesthetics procedure is an investment, which is why educating her clients and taking a less-is-more approach is important to her.

Feeling 22 also specializes in weight loss management. Throughout her career, Lacey has seen the role weight can have on health and well-being, and she walks alongside her weight loss clients with care and oversight.

“Weigh loss medications need to be handled properly, but when done right, it can be life-changing for people,” she shared. Learn more about Feeling 22’s natural looking aesthetic enhancements and patient focused wellness solutions online— and don’t forget to check out their monthly specials for spring.

CREATING MOMENTS OF JOY

From the intimate dwellings to the shared amenities, the Marlin and Doris Thomas Memory Center at Willow Valley Communities is being artfully designed to create moments of joy.

LONG-STANDING HALLMARKS

of traditional memory care settings are being replaced by destinations and programmatic elements that will set a new standard for supportive communities.

At the Marlin and Doris Thomas Memory Center, a grocery store, salon, greenhouse, and prominent Town Center will provide residents the option to self-engage in lifelong social routines within the safety of the built environment. Residents visiting the grocery store will be able to grab a snack or stock up on personal favorites for their household, and those craving a little extra pampering will be able to visit the salon as they please. Residents with a green thumb will be able to tend the garden in partnership with others from the greater community and incorporate the fruits of their labor into their menu. And for those who just enjoy people watching, the Town Center will offer a comfortable place to observe activity.

Opportunities to enjoy the small pleasures of daily life will be peppered throughout the campus and will offer visitors an alternative to the dreaded edge-of-the-bed visit that is typical in a nursing community. A sit-down restaurant, resembling an American pub, will provide additional opportunity for friends and family to extend their visit in a familiar, relaxed atmosphere. Those who prefer a more active visit will be able to stroll the meandering paths around the seven-acre campus, head over to a club meeting, or bring the great-grandkids along for an intergenerational trip to the onsite

playground. The Town Center, in addition to places for spectating, will offer vibrant activities that are sure to inspire smiles, dancing, and laughter with live music and performances, ice cream and refreshment carts, and pop-up social gatherings—all designed to be enjoyed by residents and their guests.

Some residents will prefer a quieter visit, and their guests will be welcomed

into residents’ homes and invited to participate in the activities of the household. Relaxing in the living room as they enjoy a cup of coffee, baking a favorite family recipe in the kitchen, playing a game in the den, or reminiscing on the patio—these are the quiet moments when the touch of a hand may bring the greatest feeling of joy and belonging.

A family meal, a glimmer of hope, a fleeting moment when a memory from long ago is remembered with joy—these are the simple pleasures that will define life at the Memory Center.

The moments of joy that will exist in these spaces are the driving force behind Willow Valley Communities’ desire to provide a better way and transform the lives of those affected by dementia. In addition, the Marlin and Doris Thomas Memory Center aims to reduce stigma and increase the social involvement of family and friends—bringing a feeling of normalcy to the care environment and bolstering the informal support system.

A sense of belonging will echo throughout the built environment as meaningful activities foster freedom of choice and connectedness. The common threads of daily routines

and social norms will be revered as the guiding principles of the Memory Center, ensuring that the people living with dementia are seen and treated as competent, capable members of the community who are still able to exercise their independence through a variety of life’s pleasures.

Construction is well underway, and donors will celebrate a Beam Signing Ceremony in spring 2025 as construction continues. Willow Valley Communities looks forward to an anticipated opening in spring 2026 and opening to the greater Lancaster community in the summer.

If you or your loved one have been impacted by dementia and memory loss, you can find opportunities to support the Memory Center as well as resources and information at Foundation.WillowValleyCommunities.org.

A building for dreamers

Featured in a 1971 edition of Progressive Architecture, Armstrong World Industries’ Campus Center has been a longstanding fixture of its Lancaster headquarters.

Designed by Vincent Kling, an American Institute of Architects Fellow and a notable architect of his time, it was called a “building for dreamers,” featuring custom spaces for those working in product styling and design at what was then called Armstrong Cork Company. As AWI has evolved,

the Campus Center has continued to inspire innovation and empower the next generation of leaders. Its signature sloping glass wall was intentionally crafted to maximize light in the work spaces, which AWI employees still enjoy today—along with new features inside like a stateof-the-art fitness center, café and dynamic collaboration areas.

As AWI celebrates the 75th anniversary of its Lancaster campus this year, the team is honoring their rich

architectural history that blends timeless design with modern innovation. This combination of historic and contemporary reflects AWI’s commitment to creating an environment where creativity, community and progress thrive.

The Lancaster campus continues to grow, honoring its past while embracing the future.

A&E Audiology & Hearing Aid Center knows that hearing issues like ringing in your ears can distract you from these everyday joys, which is why they are now offering a range of treatment options for tinnitus including the first and only FDA approved treatment. The first step in hearing more of what you love, and less of what you don’t, is scheduling an appointment to discuss your hearing and tinnitus concerns.

GARDEN SPOT COMMUNITIES CELEBRATES the cultural diversity team members bring to their work. But more importantly, Garden Spot strives to celebrate the individual team members—to help them fulfill their dreams and live the life they imagine. A recently introduced program, Pathway to Fluency, pairs team members and residents to help increase English fluency. Join the team: gardenspotcommunities.org
