F
or years, the lakes, beaches, forest, culture and history of the area have been a destination for thousands of visitors. And in recent years, many of those visits have turned into long-term stop-overs. With so much lakeshore and beauty, people are bringing their families to the region to set up a permanent footing. We hope you’ll consider joining them. Rural subdivisions offering all the amenities of municipal living are popping up at record rates. Lakeshore cabins are all the rage, and getaway retreats hidden deep in the boreal forest are the pride of many new families. Local realtors and developers are ready to accommodate new residents, but it is the clean air, unobstructed views and hospitable community which really do the selling. So enjoy city services while living in the beautiful country. Once you come for a visit, we know you’ll be back — maybe to stay!

Looking to escape from the hustle and bustle of every day life?
L
ook no further than the back-country canoe circuit in the Lakeland Provincial Park and Recreation Area. Just imagine: three days on the open water with just you, your canoe partners and the unspoiled beauty of Alberta’s only canoe circuit. “You canoe through the day, perhaps stop for lunch on one the of the many beaches after a morning of fishing - it’s so natural!” says District Conservation Officer Luc Nowicki. “It’s a great way to see the area’s natural beauty.” The canoe circuit is well mapped, offering several short portage sections and many one-ofa-kind spots to set up a camp for the night.

n July 28, 1908, Joseph Plamondon and a small group of French settlers arrived in north-eastern Alberta from Michigan, intent on starting a new life. A century later, the place they established is now a bustling community. From the Cabane à Sucre to the hugely popular Mud Bog weekend, scarcely a week goes by without some sort of community event taking place. For those who want to learn more about the history of this unique community, there’s the Plamondon Museum, which features wall-to-wall displays of times gone by, and Parc Heritage Park, which presents the history of Plamondon in miniature replicas. Something to Walk About If you love to go for a walk in pristine boreal forests or alongside glistening lakes, you must make the trip to the Lac La Biche Region!
Learn about the Lac La Biche Region while you stroll.
Many of our trails have information markers along them. They’ll tell you about wildlife and history in the area.
O
ur trail network will impress any hiking buff or fan of an afternoon stroll. One of the area’s more popular trails is a paved 15 kilometre walking path stretching from a quiet subdivision just east of the Lac La Biche townsite, along the Lac La Biche lakeshore, passing beside the golf course and extending to Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park. Plamondon also boasts a similar stretch of trail around the hamlet. For those looking for a little bit more of a rustic trek, there’s hundreds of kilometres of mapped back-country trails within the Lakeland Provincial Park and Recreation Area. Shorter trails at Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park are a treat for a little walking getaway or a Sunday afternoon stroll.

Staying in a
Winter Wonderland
Summer isn’t the only season in the Lac La Biche Region that offers a great time for recreation enthusiasts.
T
here’s just as much fun to be had by playing “on” our lakes in the winter as there is playing “in” our lakes in the summer. Activities in our winter months take the chill out of the cold season’s air. For those who love to fish year-round, there are plenty of great spots to go ice fishing. A little line, a few hooks and some bait are all you need to catch a keeper! For the land-lovers, the snow covered trails of
the Shaw Lake Cross Country Ski circuit offer miles of natural beauty. If a little more speed is to your liking, the area’s lakes and back country offer snowmobile trails for every type of rider. More structured events during the winter months include the popular Winter Festival of Speed and the Lac La Biche Kinsmen On The Pond minor hockey tournament. Both events take place in early March and turn Lac La Biche lake into a true winter wonderland.
