‘Megastar’ Sharon Cuneta making noise in showbiz
ust a few weeks ago, the singer-actress came clean admitting she went through ‘mid-life crisis’.
Cuneta, on her Facebbok page, posted a lengthy message saying, “I let myself go, I allowed myself to get fat and stay fat. I became complacent. I never lost faith in God and in you [my fans], but I ignored the fact that I had lost faith in myself.” Sharon also admitted that her passion and drive had weakened but conceded that she has no one else to blame but herself. Saying, “I feel that I had lost that hunger to be on top of my industry, maybe because I finally had a peaceful home and a loving family and focused on my children so much.” She continued by confessing that she went on a “rebellious” period, “I hated myself for the way I looked and the time I continued to waste by not focusing and working on bettering my own person.”

Now 48, Cuneta shares that she went through that stage between 40-42 years old and added, “I am feeling much better now… Don’t let go… someone’s just getting started.” On another note, the Megastar disclosed that she no longer is part of the Manny Pangilinan-owned network, TV5. The actress personally made the announcement through her Twitter account last August 29, hinting, “I am going to drop clues every now and then as to the things I will be working on which will start sooner than you think! So keep watching out for those clues. Goodnight, everyone! Sweet dreams and may God bless you always!” Sharon joined the network three years ago prompting issues that she’s been offered a billion-peso contract, which she refuted. TV5 has released a short statement on that matter. It read: “ TV5 wishes to extend its gratitude to Ms. Sharon Cuneta for being part of the Kapatid Network for almost three years. The network wishes her well in all her future endeavors.”

Actor Mark Gil dies at 52 R aphael Joseph De Mesa Eigenmann or best known as Mark Gil succumbed to liver cirrhosis last September 1. His brother, Michael de Mesa, read a statement on air via ABS-CBN when the actor died, “We, the Eigenmann Family, would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to everybody who has shown their concern for Ralph these past few weeks.” “It is with much sorrow that we announce that he passed away this morning at exactly 8am. He died peacefully in his sleep in the arms of his wife, Maricar, and surrounded by family.” “Ralph was first diagnosed with liver cancer two years ago, but it was only in June of this year that he found out that it was terminal. It was Ralph’s request that this should not be revealed, and we did not question his decision.” “To those who have asked us about his condition, especially his colleagues, the press and fans, we apologize for
not being forthright, but we also ask for understanding.” “We would, however, like everyone to know that he spent his last days in comfort and in no pain. In fact, he was in good spirits and humor, and enjoying the presence of his entire family. Even then, he was still bringing us together, as he always has, and we are now all complete.” “Until the very end, he was a warrior. Ralph faced death with courage and grace, while still bringing laughter to the room. That was his gift: the ability to make those around him better.” “Ralph had told us that he only wanted to spend and cherish the remaining precious days of his life in the company of his family and closest friends. He also wished that we be allowed to grieve his passing in private.” “We all request that the public please respect his wish and allow us to mourn his passing accordingly. Please allow us this time as well to remember Ralph: husband, son, and brother, father and www.filipinostarmagazine.com
grandfather.” “For the outpouring of love for Ralph that we’ve received on his behalf, we thank you. It is deeply appreciated. For those who’ve known and loved him throughout his career in cinema, and television, we will hold a celebration of his life and work. We will announce the details at a later time. But for now we would like to assure everyone that as long as Filipino films are being watched and appreciated, there will always be Mark Gil.” The actor left behind his wife Maricar Jacinto-Eigenmann, and children Gabby Eigenmann, Timmy Eigenmann (Sid Lucero), Andi Eigenmann, Maxine Eigenmann, Ira Eigenmann, and Stevie Eigenmann. Mark Gil was last seen in ABS-CBN’s “The Legal Wife”. 5

The two were brought to work together in the remake of Thalia’s Marimar. Rivera as Marimar and Dantes as Sergio and just like that, love blossomed and filled the air.
Dingdong Dantes first proposed to Marian Rivera during a trip in Macau last August of 2012. The venue was at the MGM Butterfly Pavilion. And no, the proposal is not a so-so, it was one for the books.
Since then, the couple became inseparable and the relation-

a huge dome full of butterflies, a song, “Kahit Maputi na ang Buhok Ko”, a speech promising “forever” and the rock, the ring. The first proposal was a success but given they are both “sought-after” celebrities they then went back to their own busy, erratic, demanding world and routines but with the thought of a marriage to look forward to. The two kept mum on their marriage plans, which was their plan too, but just as the agreed public announcement nears (during Marian’s birthday celebration in her dance show with GMA 7), Dong confided their friends and plotted another proposal. With the help of the crew behind “Marian” the show, Dindong was able to pull off another proposal, this time with the whole audience and National TV to see which happened last August 9. The first part of the birthday show was taped but the latter part was allotted to greetings and the revelation of the 2-year-old wedding engagement. Dantes went onstage with flowers on hand and asked Marian to explain to the audience the significance of the photos being shown in the background. The slide show then showed a familiar video taken on 2012— the first proposal in Macau. Though interrupted by a commercial break, Dingdong finally declared, “I want to do it right this time.” The crowd went wild, cheered and raved for the couple. Dantes went down on one knee and continued, “Ikaw ang sagot sa aking mga dasal (You are the answer to my prayers).” Then took out a new ring from his jacket pocket and passionately said, Dong then took Marian’s left hand and slipped the ring on her finger. Marian, speechless, just kissed and embraced Dingdong. They then faced the crowd with Dong calling Marian his fiancé, to reverberating cheers. www.filipinostarmagazine.com

Boy Abunda speaks about his real health condition
A
fter more than a month of absence in his shows, the “King of Talk” finally divulged the real score of his long rest and cleared rumors and speculations on it and says that he’s had liver abscess treatment. Last September 7, in “The Buzz” Abunda tell-all details of what happened to him. “Bumigay na ho talaga ako. Sobrang sakit po ng aking ulo.Ayon sa nurses na aking kasama, ayon sa aking mga nagbabantay, nag deliryo ho ako. Nag kombulsyon ho ako. Ang sabi sa akin, nagtsi-chill daw ako sobra, sobrang-sobrang chill.” “Nakakatakot daw akong panoorin. ‘Tapos kinakagat ko daw ang aking dila, I was gnashing my teeth, I was biting my lips, so I was bleeding. Meron palang pagkakataon sa buhay ng isang tao, mga kaibigan, that sobra ka n ghina, that you are so helpless. Ibinigay ko sa Diyos ang aking buhay, at ibinigay ko sa mga doktor ang aking buhay. Kahitanong test, kahit anong test I’m open, sabi ko sa aking doktor, to any test. “So, lahat ho yun pinagdaanan—dengue, tipus, typhoid, HIV, hepa, lungs, liver, kidneys, at marami pa pong iba.” After undergoing several tests, it was found out that he has abscess o nana sa kanyang atay.

Also because I love my job.” “Pero sa ospital, nakiusap na lang ako sa Diyos, sabi ko, ‘Panginoong Diyos, huwag mong pabayaang ilibing ako ng nanay ko. I don’t want to die.’ Boy Abunda happily claimed that he is very well now and is expected to go back to work in his talk shows. “I’m okay. Right now, ang aking estado po, I am starting to gain more weight. May sakit lang dito, kapag tumatawa, kapag umiiyak, kapag nagiging emosyonal, ‘pag medyo kumikilos. Am I absolutely healthy? Siguro nasa mga nobenta porsiyento na po. I am on my way to joyful, great recovery.” “Of course, I will continue to do my work on television. I should be back really soon. I will be back. If you want a date, malay ho natin, next Sunday, September 14, baka mag bukas na ho ako ng Buzz at mag sabing, ‘Magandang hapon Pilipinas at buong mundo! Welcome to The Buzz.’” “For the first time, kahit naroon yung mga mahal ko sa buhay, kahit naroon si Bong [Quintana, his partner], naroon yung mga nurses, naroon yung aking kapatid, for the first time in my life, doon ko po naramdaman yung may episode ho pala, na ikaw lang at ang Diyos, and you are stripped naked of everything. “Kinausap ako nang malakas ng Diyos, tinapik ho ako nang malakas, dahil yumabang ho ako.” “One of my doctors said, ‘You know, Boy, for many years, hindi ka naman nao-ospital, you’ve been running too fast. “You thought you were invincible. You thought you were Iron Man. Ipinapaalalalang sa ‘yo ng Diyos, at ng katawan mo, na hindi mo kaya ang lahat.’ My stay in the hospital humbled me. Powerless po talaga. May mga hapon, darating po yung akin doktor at sasabihin, ‘It seems like your favorite place in the room...’ “Nandoon po ako sa gilid, nilalagyan ko na po ng pangalan ng mga building sa labas ng St. Luke’s, lahat po yun kinakausap ko, tumatawa ako, para akong baliw.” Thankfully, Abunda was able to surpass the sickness and was released from the hospital last August 23. “Sabi ko, ‘PanginoongDiyos, ano ba talaga ang gusto ko sa buhay ko? Bakit ganito na lamang ka-passionate, bakitganito na lamang ka-driven ako sa trabaho ko? What is it that I want?’ Simple lang naman pala talaga ang sagot. www.filipinostarmagazine.com

Zanjoe and Bea not joining the bandwagon W ith some celebrity couples popping up the question, Zanjoe says, “Bea’s not yet ready” to take the plunge. In an interview with “Aquino and Abunda Tonight”, Zanjoe shared that both of them are still busy with their respective jobs and so tying the knot is not among their top priorities.
“Masaya naman kami na parehas kaming busy. Kaya kapagnagkaka-time kami, kapag birthday ko or birthday niya, pinapayagan kami magbakasyon, yun ang lagi naming nilu-look forward,” he said. He then added that Bea is not yet ready for a lifelong commitment. “Ang dami kasing nagtatanong, ang dami kasing nagpo-propose, nagpapakasal, kung kami daw ba kailan? Ako kasi hindi naman ako nape-pressure. Si Bea hindi rin. Alam kasi siguro namin parehas at alam ko na si Bea, hindi pa niya iniisip. Hindi pa siya ready anytime soon so ganun yung utak namin. Wala pa sa isip niya yung ganung bagay,” he said. He said that Bea’s unpreparedness worked for him, as he also wants to prepare everything. Zanjoe and Bea are now three years into their relationship.

AUGUST HOROSCOPE ASTROTWINS, ASTROLOGY FORECAST Can we get a little order around here? From eating clean to decluttering to color-coding the spines on your bookshelf, you’re on a life-hacking mission for the first three weeks of September. Even better? You could be whipping up a Paleo-inspired feast for someone special after September 22. Just say “yes” to a business or romantic offer at the September 24 Libra new moon, which inspires you to make things official.
Go luxe or go home! The stars practically script the perfect excuse to splurge on that iPhone 6 or a coveted capsule-collection piece. With Virgo’s practical bent, you’ll find a way to justify it — just consider the happiness ROI. Pleasure is underrated, and has many benefits for your emotional and mental health. Get out and explore the treasures in your neighborhood — and no, they don’t have to break the bank. Think free lectures, volunteer work, and flea markets that sell sustainable and artisanal goods.
Swap the selfies for professional head shots. Go after that coveted client or plum opportunity that puts your name on the map. Of course, if you find that you’re slipping into workaholic mode from “leaning in” too far, remember the difference between working harder and working smarter. Step away from your devices and do a different kind of networking. You’ll accomplish more at the after-party or a weekend brunch stocked with “influencers” than you will by staying glued to your smartphone.
Just because the 12-and-under set has discovered flash tattoos doesn’t mean you can’t still rock one, Taurus. You’ll be the first to try fall color trends, like a deeply saturated red — the very hue you’ll be painting the town. All the better to turn heads. You’ll ditch the rooftop bars for the juice bars after the 22nd, when the sun downshifts into Libra and your healthy sixth house. Does that new vegan leather bag come in a shade that matches your kale smoothie?
It’s Virgo time — and you’re feeling the love! The sun is in your sign until September 22, along with alluring Venus from September 5-29. You could catch admiring glances wherever you go. Soak it up! The sun in Virgo also heats up your personal projects and solo ventures. While you’re the sign of the giver, this is your annual free pass to put yourself first. On the 22nd, the sun moves into Libra, your second house of money and priorities. Buckle down with your budget and set a spending plan for fall. Save room for a luxury or two!
Even YOU need a break from time to time, industrious Capricorn — and September’s stars beckon with sweet escapes. Plan a getaway if you can, even if it’s a little road trip (handy apps can help you plan your itinerary). Getting out of city limits resets your perspective. Can’t ditch your duties? Don’t hate — matriculate. Going back to school, even for a short extension course or oneday workshop, can totally shift your whole mindset. Your career takes center stage for a month on September 22.
Home, sweet home. You are all about feathering your nest. Swap those tired throw pillows for eye-catching new patterns. Edit cluttered surfaces into pared-down tablescapes. If you’re feeling extra crafty, you might even try a simpler-than-it-sounds DIY décor project. Time with family is also rich, so lounge with your clan and catch up. Let the shameless selfies begin.
Life is about to get weird but life could hold a few surprises for you. The key is to surrender and allow — not to jump to conclusions. This flowy phase ripens your imagination, so pack your digital camera, fire up Garage Band, or welcome the muse in whatever creative form it arrives. The fog lifts on September 22, when the sun starts a month-long voyage through Libra. Circle September 24, the Libra new moon, as your personal new year. Hello, fresh start.
You’re uncharacteristically quiet as the month begins. You’re in your cocoon, processing some heavy emotions from the year or just feeling the need to tighten your inner circle and focus on quality connections. You could be sniffing out a strategic ally for a lucrative business collaboration. Pooling your talents and resources could lead to a win-win.
Plug in the HDMI cables — you’re on the high-speed-connection train. Already a culture wizard, you’ll be the go-to social director and info database for your crew, blowing up newsfeeds with tips for live shows, new restaurants, playlists, and hot new books. On September 22, the sun decamps to Libra and your homey fourth house. Slip out of the scene for a month to connect with your inner circle or “touch up your roots” with a trip to see family.
Festival season may be on the wane, but you’re in no mood to end the good times. Your creativity peaks at the September 8 full moon, which falls in your house of expression and romance. You’ll want to dip under the radar after September 22, though, when the sun decamps to Libra and your 12th house of rest. Tie up loose ends, keep your schedule light, and refill your tanks for birthday season in a few weeks.
Two is your magic number this month. It’s time to create dynamic duos, both in love and business. The one day that’s all about you, though, is the September 8 Pisces full moon. Get ready for your guitar solo. Everything you’ve been building toward since March 1 (the Pisces new moon) reaches a full-tilt manifestation or turning point. It’s time to debut a new project, look or attitude — don’t hold back!

Getting charmed by the quaint cafes in Sagada By: Kristine Buenavista
There is something beyond beautiful when you share a moment with yourself or with someone in a café. Perhaps most people have been to the fanciest places for food and coffee in the world. If you haven’t been to the quaintest and most charming cafes in the Philippines, it’s time to experience Sagada. Sagada is popular for its hanging coffins, trekking, caving and rappelling. Not many travel guides, books and blogs talk much about how one can get lost in the uniqueness of places to chill out in this municipality.
charming cafes! Yes, the families and small-scale entrepreneurs use their creativity and resources to start up a café business in their own homes. They paint the walls a bit; decorate the space with random wood furniture, drawings and items. I believe that it’s a great way to keep harmony with nature. One does not have to build more concrete buildings to make a place beautiful. In Sagada, they let you in not only in a shop but at the comfort of their homes, right in the heart of their families. We went around and spent time in the following cafes: Gaia, Bana’s, Yoghurt House, Sagada Homestay Café and fireplace as well as Persimone. Gaia stands near the stream overlooking the lushness. Here, you get to enjoy organic meals with the chance
When you take a walk around, you can find residential houses and simple abodes. Go on walking, wandering and observing. It will not take too long for you to find yourself in the loveliest places. I spent a few days in Sagada with two travel buddies and all three of us learned lessons of sustainability and creativity while sharing travel stories, fresh yoghurt with strawberries, the healthiest of meals and Civet coffee. Are you in for a surprise? The simple houses and places around are the 28
to read books and buy crafts. We tried there brown rice meals and their fruit smoothies and we all went awwww. At Bana’s, the mother cooked our lunch and the kids happily arranged our meals on their dining table. They’ve decorated their living room and balcony with small chairs, hand-woven bags, old photos of the Ifugao tribe and hammocks. Yoghurt House serves fresh yoghurt with your own choice of fruits. They also showcase artworks from various artists that have been there. Sagada Homestay Café served us the best pumpkin soup. We had bugnay wine sessions in their fireplace, too. It was a beautiful night under the stars. At Persimone, I felt big in such a shack-style nook that has a free-spirited ambiance: conceptual painting, handmade blinds, random decors and mouth-watering pasta and potato wedges. Being in these places did not cost me much. Being there has also inspired me to start my own café – share with people the magic of good healthy food and drinks, do-it-yourself interior design and harmony with the community and environment. In Sagada, the moment your soles take you out on the street, your soul will find places so charming. You’d feel like you’re inside a colorful story book.

Lutong Nanay: Fat Reduced Chicken Adobo Adobo is widely considered the “unofficial” nation dish of the Philippines. Not only is Adobe the name of a dish, but also the name of the cooking process where meat, seafood or vegetables are marinated in vinegar, soy sauce and garlic, then browned in oil and simmered in the marinade. Back in the day, before refridgeration, Filipinos would use this method to cook food so that it would not easily spoil. It’s a dish that can be stored for a couple of days, and in fact becomes tastier the longer the meat marinates in the sauce. Adobo has become a mainstay in every Filipino household. In many parts of the country, the recipe has been altered and made a regional specialty. Salivating and missing the authentic adobo taste? Not a fan of the oil that typically coats this tasty dish? Read on and go ahead make it your own healthy, yet tasty version.
Nanay notes: Adobo is best eaten on the second day. I usually do the baking on the weekend and finish the dish on the weekday before serving. Fat typically contains twice the calories of protein and carbohydrates gram per gram. Skimming the fat off after baking and cooling, protects the family from potential heart diseases.
Ingredients 2 lbs. chicken pieces ½ tbsp. rock salt 3/4 cup vinegar 1/3 cup patis (fish sauce, squid brand) ½ cup water 1 white onion chopped 1 red onion chopped 5 cloves of garlic (divided into 2 uses) Ground pepper ¼ cup dark soy sauce 1 tbsp. oil
Directions 1. Salt chicken pieces. Place all ingredients in an oven proof glass container, except the soy sauce, oil and half of the garlic. Cover with aluminum foil pierced with holes. Placed in the cover and cook at 350 degrees Farenheit for 40 minutes. 2. Let it cool. During the colder months, I usually place the container, covered, out on our balcony to let the oil solidify at the top. 3. Scrape off the top part where the fat has become white and solidified. 4. In a wok, put oil and use the other half of garlic until garlic becomes golden brown. Add in the chicken and soy sauce. Slowly add the broth. Simmer for another 7 minutes uncovered. Serve hot! With rice and vegetable side dish. www.filipinostarmagazine.com
