Filipino Star Magazine. Vancouver Edition. July, 2014

Just like in any fairy tale, this chinita princess has a ‘Godmother’, not a woman per se, but rather ‘Big Brother’ from the US franchise, Pinoy Big Brother. She was one of the ‘housemates’ in the 2006 Pinoy Big Brother: Teen Edition, which was aired in April and May of 2006. She didn’t go home teary-eyed because she left the famous yellow house as the first Teen Big Winner. Mind you, she was never even nominated for eviction. And that is when it all started for Kimberly Sue Yap Chiu or Kim Chiu, one of ABS-CBN’s sought-after leading ladies and top-billed actress. But just like any other fairytale, there always is a low-point in the protagonist’s life. Kim is the fourth child of five siblings, of Chinese-Filipino descent and was born in China on April 19, 1990. Her mother abandoned them when she was just nine years old, which led her to move from one home to another as a child. She grew up with her paternal grandmother and siblings. It was only in 2013 that she was reconciled with her father.

She may have experienced a lot of ‘unfortunate’ events in her life but she was never known and seen as someone who is having troubles with her family. She was seen in PBB as a bubbly, go-getter and a very funny 16-year-old teenager. Even before she left ‘Kuya’s’ house, she was already able to record her own song titled ‘Peng You’ or ‘Friend’ in English, alongside Juris of MYMP. After winning the reality show, Chiu instantly became a ‘superstar’. She became a regular in ASAP XV, played in some of ‘Love Spells’ episodes and played one of the lead roles in the movie, First Day High. Everything and then some followed. She starred in a primetime TV series Sana Maulit Muli. She was nominated as the Most Promising Female Star in the 38th Guillermo Mendoza Box Office Awards and she bagged it. She was also named as the Best New Female TV Personality at the 21st PMPC Star Awards. She took those two major awards only a year after she won from PBB.

Some of the TV series she did were: ‘Ina, Kapatid, Anak’, ‘My Binondo Girl’, ‘Toda Max’, ‘Minsan Lang Kita Iibigin’ and ‘Tayong Dalawa’ to name a few. She also starred in the movies: ‘I’ve Fallen For You’, ‘Shake, Rattle & Roll X’, ‘I Love You, Goodbye’ and some more. Her most recent movie was ‘Bride for Rent’ together with her love team, Xian Lim. The primetime princess is now filming a movie, which is going to be shown sometime this year and one of the official entry for the Metro Manila Film Festival titled, “Feng Shui 2”, under Star Cinema starring Kris Aquino and Coco Martin; directed by Chito Roño. The 24-year-old actress can be seen in ABS-CBN’s primetime TV series, Ikaw Lamang where she portrays the character of ‘Isabelle’. She also is a mainstay in ASAP shown every Sundays.

Ate Vi binatikos ng mga grammar Nazis Again, thanks for believing in me. Until next time.”

A

ng tinaguriang Star of All Seasons at Batangas governor na si Vilma Santos-Recto binatikos sa social media dahil sa dedication letter na kanyangipinadala kay Kris Aquino. Last June 30, the Queen of All Media, Kris Aquino posted a photo in her Instagram account (@lovekrisaquino) with the caption: “Super sarap Ensaymadas from my Idol sa trabaho, serbisyopubliko& sa pag handle ng personal na buhay, sa pagigingmabuti at mapagmahal na asawa at nanay! Thank You Ate Vi!” I take all of these as constructive criticisms. Tao lang; nagkakamali. Sa mga bashers… Salamat po.

10

To which, Kris texted: “I’m sorry Ate Vi. I didn’t think about the wrong spelling because what mattered to me was your kindness & the thought behind the card.” Muling sinabini Aquino kung gaano niya ina-admire si Ate Vi, saying: “I woke up & saw this text from Ate Vi. And it made me realize why I am such a fan of this woman: she is BRAVE, she has a WONDERFUL SENSE OF HUMOR, she has WISDOM, and she is TRUTHFUL! Above everything else, she remains HUMBLE! HINDI SYA PIKON KASI NGA ALAM NYA THAT HER LIFE IS GOOD. Her example will continue to inspire me for the rest of my life.” Though Aquino already expressed her apologies to Ate Vi, some Netizens can’t help but express their opinions. One Facebook user said, “Parang may halong malice yongpag post ni Kris ng card niVilma, well it might just be my dirty mind. Hindi naman kasi need pang ipostyong card just to show the world how sweet a person Vilma is, lalonanga at may wrong spelling and grammar, which I am very sure she noticed. She could just have posted a picture of the ensaymadas without the card and said that these were from Vilma. I don’t think anybody would doubt her word nor would it make Vilma less sweet in the eyes of their fans.” Another Facebook user says there’s nothing wrong with it, “In a world of text there is nothing wrong with spelling nowadays it is the sound of a true feeling for all we know we may have new word in the dictionary soon.”

K

ho lost his license in 2009 after he was involved in several sex scandals.

The businessman-actor-doctor posted a photo in his Instagram account showing a part of the document reinstating him as a doctor. Seen in the document: “We see no cogent reason to further burden petitioner with the remnants of a reckless faux pas when his overall conduct shows a manifestly repentant heart. While others simply passively wait for the period revocation to lapse, petitioner positively and quickly acted to prove himself a worthy medical doctor to this Board and the Commission. Wherefore, all premises considered and for reasons of equity and justice, the

Easy Remittance Tips! 3. Online platforms using debit cards. Bank with the Big 4.

US-based online platforms such as “Xoom” ONLY accept US accounts for debit. There are other online platform that useInterac Online to debit funds directly from your Canadian account. These however, are limited. Only 4 Canadian banks currently participate in it: TD Canada Trust, Royal Bank, Scotia Bank and Bank of Montreal (BMO).

ou and your family must be jumping with joy and have that “ngiting abot tenga” glued on your faces… but wait, hold your horses and don’t get too excited for there are some SIMPLE tips and options you need to learn before you start sending your hard-earned money to your relatives in the Philippines.Read along…

This is a compelling reason to open a bank account with these 4 banks, but most of the time their accounts have a monthly charge which can range anywhere from $9 to $30 a month. These charges are largely dependent on the number of transactions you have in a month. The less transactions you do, the lower the monthly charge. Most temporary workersopt for the account with the lowest monthly charge that is sufficient for their needs and at the same time, has the flexibility and convenience to do online banking.

1. Cashless transaction= cost-effective. Imagine having to withdraw your cash and having to endure those gruelling transit ridesjust to send money, then thinking about what your family has to go through to pick it up. Add to that the dangers they could possibly meet as they get the money from popular remittance centers.

Pagkatapos mag-open ng bank account, a piece of paper will be given to you which has the password written in it at kungpaanoi-access. Maari ring palitanang password. Maari ding magpatulong sa teller sapag bukas at paggamit ng on-line banking.”

4. Foreign Remittance Companies – Tangkilikin ang sariling atin!

Worry no more, because EasyPadala brings you TEXT REMITTANCE. All you have to do is do a ONE-TIME account setup and remit all you want! Easy as that.

Sahalagang $6.50 lang, angpadala o remittancenacredit to a to Banco de Oro (BDO) account. Ang BDO angpinaka-malakingfinancial network sa Pilipinas. KasamaitosaSy group of companies. Dagdag lang ng $1 for pick-up on all SM branches, SM Forex counters, BDO branches, Tambunting pawnshops, at sa mga ka-affiliate na rural banks PLUS there’s NO hidden charges as they get it in the Philippines. Wow!

Y

Remit through a Filipino-Canadian with partnerships in Philippine banks because you’re not only sending money to your families but you’ll also be helping the Philippines’ economy grow and it’s “like hitting two birds in one stone!” Tangkilikin ang sariling atin.

Tips brought to you by Easy Padala. Coming soon to Vancouver!

2. Credit cards to remit!=more expensive than the actual listed transaction fee Many online remittance platforms now accept credit cards when sending money. One of which is “Xoom”.You need to transact in US dollars, so you may lose out on exchange rate when transacting using a Canadian credit card.

You need to be cautious though because there are credit card fees that are NOT included in your transaction. It will ONLY show up on your credit card statement at the end of the month. It’s basic, “use credit card, you get charges/interest” and the same goes when you use it for remittance and it’s about 1.5%.

“I was once charged 1.5% of the total amount once. For a $1,000 transaction, that’s $15 on top of the transaction fees I already paid. “ www.filipinostarmagazine.com

JULY HOROSCOPE

Your social life picks up speed this month! Expect to fall in love with a person, an idea or a passionate new pastime. Follow your bliss – even if you have to scout around to find it first. If you’ve been trying to get pregnant, this could be your year.

Home, family and real estate are areas of growth an opportunity. If you’re not truly happy where you are, then you’ll figure out where or how you will be the happiest and do something about it. An extended family reunion is highly likely, or you may be welcoming a new addition to the family.

Communication of all kinds will be expanded, and you’ll be networking and taking lots of short trips (you love that!). Learning is on the agenda too, so you might take a class, teach or join a book club. Be wary of overspending and decide for yourself if it’s really worth it.

Whether you dream of taking that big trip, falling in love, going back to school, moving to a new home or expanding your business, anything is possible. Besides being more popular, you’re lucky now too, so calculated risks tend to pay off. One thing you need to be wary of is your waistline.

It may start to feel like money actually does grow on trees. Opportunities will be there, but it could pass right by if you don’t take action. Don’t count on always getting you way. Focus on compromising instead.

You may suddenly get a hidden benefactor or start a new love affair. Psychic abilities expand, your intuition is dead on, and you could feel more compassion and empathy for those in need.

Curb your impatience, but not your enthusiasm. You may just have to say no to the non-essentials. Your social life is set to expand at a rapid rate over the next 12 months. Luck and opportunity will come your way if you join in and get involved with group endeavors. This is a fantastic time to ask the boss for a raise or apply for a new job. An opportunity in a completely different area bears looking into. If you’ve been thinking about self-employment or getting a homebased business off the ground, this is you year!

It’s a good time to take on a business partner. Single? It’s easy to meet potential suitors, the hard part is paring them down. Committed relationships go through a kind or renaissance as you find more ways to connect and have fun together.

It’s a fantastic time to start any kind of self-improvement program or to tackle a new health and wellness regimen. Benefits come your way through the people you work with, as well as from people who work for you. You may want to consider adopting a new furry friend!

Vancouver Lifestyle THE Truth behind the ‘real’ cause of heart diseases

I

magine having to switch the lights on and off… over and over again. What happens? Easy, we know it so well. The light bulb dies or worse, an electric fuse explodes. Why do I say that? You might be wondering where I am coming from. Simple, it is the SAME with our bodies. But in order to give more depth and validity to what I am talking about, a doctor, by the name of Dwight Lundell, past Chief of Staff and Chief of Surgery at Banner Heart Hospital in Arizona and the author ofThe Cure for Heart Disease and The Great Cholesterol Life, had written an article posted online (http:// myscienceacademy.org/2012/08/19/ world-renown-heart-surgeon-speaks-outon-what-really-causes-heart-disease/) to divulge the real deal on what ‘really’ causes heart diseases. I know you all or probably some of you may have tried drinking medicines that promise to lower blood cholesterol but on Dr. Dwight Lundell’s confession, he had said that those wouldn’t help because what really causes the spike are the inflammation in the artery wall. Let us highlight, underline and emphasize the word ‘inflammation’. By inflammation, the doctor meant “your body’s natural defense to a foreign invaders such as bacteria, toxin or virus.” The doctor emphasized on how inflammation’s role in protecting our body from bacteria and viral invaders are perfect BUT “if we constantly EXPOSE the body to injury by TOXINS or FOODS the human body was NEVER designed to process, a condition called CHRONIC INFLAMMATION occurs.”

fats and carbohydrates—“Aye aye captain!” But what we don’t know is this mainstream diet which they call the “right diet” do us more harm than any good. Blame it on the “overload of SIMPLE, HIGHLY PROCESSED carbohydrates (sugar, flour and all the products made from them) and the EXCESS consumption of omega-6 such as oils like soybean, corn and sunflower which are found in many PROCESSED FOOD.” Mind the A-L-L C-A-P-S. “Foods loaded with sugars and simple carbohydrates, or processed with omega-6 oils for long shelf life have been the mainstay of the American diet for six decades” which serves as a poison that is “slowly killing everyone”. “Imagine spilling syrup on your keyboard and you have a visual of what occurs inside the cell. When we consume SIMPLE CARBOHYDRATES such as SUGAR, BLOOD SUGAR RISES RAPIDLY. In response, your pancreas SECRETES INSULIN whose primary purpose is to drive sugar into each cell where it is stored for energy. If the cell is FULL and DOES NOT NEED glucose, it is rejected to avoid extra sugar gumming up the works. When your full cells reject the extra glucose, the blood sugar RISES producing more insulin and the glucose converts to STORED FAT.” You see, “blood sugar is CONTROLLED in a NARROW range. EXTRA sugar molecules

Okay, cliché. Overused. Gasgas. We’ve all heard how “anglahat ng sobra ay masama”. It’s basically the same with this one. We’ve all been such good boys and good girls. We kept on following what the mainstream is telling, rather dictating us to do. Have low fat diet— we follow. Take high polyunsaturated 26

attach to a variety of proteins that in turn INJURE the blood vessel wall. This REPEATED injury to the blood vessel wall SETS OFF INFLAMMATION. When you spike your blood sugar SEVERAL TIMES a day, EVERY DAY, it is exactly like taking sandpaper to the inside of your delicate blood vessels.” This practice will NOT ONLY result to heart diseases but other ailments like DIABETES and ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE. “There is NO ESCAPING THE FACT that the more we consume prepared and processed foods, the MORE WE TRIP the inflammation switch little by little each day.” BARE THIS NEXT ONE IN MIND:“The human body CANNOT process, nor was it DESIGNED to consume foods packed with SUGARS and SOAKED in OMEGA-6 OILS.” But it isn’t a dead end. What the doctor suggested for us to do is “return to foods closer to their NATURAL state. To build muscle, eat more protein. Choose carbohydrates that are very complex such as COLORFUL FRUITS and VEGETABLES.” Don’t wait for it to happen. Start now. Eat clean and live healthily.
