Sarah Geronimo on getting married: “Wala pa akong groom, boyfriend pa lang.”

T

“Nasasaktan na ako,’’ said Sharon as a response to a Facebook user, Dany Pascual, who posted a photo of KC in the megastar’s account and asked her for her reaction last May 29. The photo seen may have been captured backstage during G-Force Dance Recital which happened last May 26 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena, where KC is one of the 30 celebrity guests and performers. The Megastar answered the curious Netizen and said, “I really honestly would rather not say anything. But I also really honestly would have to say I do not like that she has done this and other unnecessary too-sexy poses.” Sharon also explained that she’s reacted all because she is a mother and admitted that it isn’t the first time that KC has done something like it. “Sorry pero nanay ako… may mga bagay na ‘di naman na kailangan gawin. Madaming beses na din kasi akong nagulat.” She also added, “Well, she’s an adult and unfortunately, all we parents can do is give our advice, di magkulang sa paalala… Sana lang din tama na yung poses na ganyan.” “Nasasaktan na ako,” concluded the Megastar. 4

Cover Story

JAYR: G .

oing green Music. Passion. Next level By: Zsa-Zsa Zorilla

I waved ‘hi’ to signal to him that I am whom he came in for, but just as he was about to sit down and proceed with the interview, a lady sitting beside our table had asked him, “Are you JayR?” (introduced herself,) and had told the King of Philippine R&B, “I have long been trying to get a ticket to one of your shows. I am a fan!” Woah there! What a good way to start. He indeed is a star, but a very humble one at that… Clad in jeans and a graffiti shirt … JayR speaks with much modesty… sans ego or bravado. He apologized countless times for arriving late. The taping for his ‘Your Face Sounds Familiar’ show ended very late the night before, so to make it up to me, he handed me some M&Ms he had stashed in his pocket. Simple, subtle, but sweet …. And it worked. Born Gaudencio Sillona III, JayR was the ‘’Junior of a Junior’’ hence the name, JayR. JayR shared, “instead of all the confusion and the long names they are calling me or each other Gaudencio… they called me JayR na lang.” 6

Photos are during one of JayR’s “Elevated” album mall tours at Festival Mall in Alabang www.filipinostarmagazine.com

Filipino Star Magazine. Vancouver Edition. June, 2015

‘I am very green minded.’ Apart from being the Philippines’ R&B King, JayR is also known as a producer, an actor, an endorser and a restaurateur… Asked if there’s something not a lot of people know about him, Jay R, without hesitation answered, “I think what a lot of people don’t know is I am very green minded.” and giggles, leaving me a little flushed and with a question mark on my face. JayR explained, “That sounded kinda bad but... green minded in an eco-friendly way... I practice green-living at home and I’ve been green since elementary pa… na to recycle, to save water ganito and so… I carried on those traits.” Even if JayR has not yet encountered groups who share the same advocacy as his, JayR says, “I want to do it myself. I want to use clean energy for it is better for the world,” and hopes that by leading and living by example, he can share it to the world and spread the practice. Music Influence Most successful singers nowadays are either a product of a televised singing contest or someone who has undergone intense vocal training in some prestigious vocal school. JayR has his family to thank for his interest, passion and love for music. “My dad is the eldest of his brothers and sisters and all of them are musically inclined. They have their own bands and that’s where I got my training,” JayR shared and added that people get impressed when they learn that he didn’t have any formal training and is just very thankful that he came from a musically inclined family. JayR fondly recalls his first feat. “My first performance was in elementary for our graduation. That’s when I discovered na marunong pala akong kumanta.” He

then shared that he’s learned his passion in music through his parents as his father was a photographer and his mother assists doctors at a hospital, but both of them have shown JayR their true love/passion in music.

‘cause my drive is not just for me, it is also for my fellow artists.”

“You know it’s really love and passion because they have their respective jobs. It’s never the technical type.”

He followed it quickly with, “Another difference that I have is I give back to my music community through ‘HomeWorkz.’ I get artists that are struggling to get into the music industry but are very talented. I give them a platform to showcase their talents and to really be seen by the world.”

More goals and accomplishments otw “Another thing that I want to accomplish this year is getting a gold record and a platinum record for my new album ‘Elevated,’” shared JayR on his aim for his self-produced album from his music label, HomeWorkz Music.

See you in Canada JayR will be performing alongside Darren Espanto, Fil-Canadian singer and ‘The Voice Kids Philippines’ finalist, in his Canada Tour happening at the Saskatoon TCU Place on July 3 and at the Toronto Queen Elizabeth Theatre on July 4.

“It’s almost gold so that’s a good sign; kasi syempre platinum is double the amount of CDs than gold so sana… we get the gold soon.”

JayR said his kudos to Darren for going back to his home and performing in Canada, “You know the market around the world really loves him. So it was really a pleasure for me to join him in the concert.”

Asked if when he will know that he’s reached his prime and had accomplished his dreams, JayR modestly answered, ”I don’t know if I could ever say that ‘I’ve completed my accomplishments,’ kasi nanganganak ‘yan eh after you make one. I think it’s natural for humans to want even more than what they have. So once you achieve something… parang you feel like after that achievement… you can feel like you can achieve more and your goals and standards becomes higher,” and shares that the same explanation speaks for his recent album, “‘Elevated.’” Of course, I had to ask what’s so special about him and how is he different compared to the other artists in the country, JayR enthusiastically answered, “I think what sets me apart from other artists in the Philippines is my passion talaga. My passion for music in the Philippines rises so high na I want to elevate the music industry itself, and that’s the difference

JayR: “The Homeworkz Music family in MYX Live. They performed our songs from my Elevated album.”

“What I like about Canada is that I was born in America and may mga differences na ‘kong nakikita eh. So what I want to tell them is, ‘I cannot wait to be with them because everytime I’m in Canada, the welcome is just totally different and the aura of the people? It’s totally different talaga!’ They are very respectful. Kaya it’s really nice to be welcomed by them,” JayR said excitedly. To close, JayR invites Filipinos and nonFilipino to watch his and Darren’s concert in July. “Sa lahat ng mga Filipino natin diyan sa Canada, I can’t wait to see you specially magperform para sa inyo. Gusto ko ‘yung pag-welcome niyo sa akin. Lagi kayong mababait at good vibes… Kaya kita-kita tayo diyan sa Canada for Darren Espanto’s show and I will be there and hopefully… we will all have fun together.”

The Queen of All Media started delivering the ‘padama’ when LBC surprised media by sending ‘padala’ to celebrate her launch as their first celebrity brand endorser

M

anila, Philippines - In an event titled From LBC to the World, With Love, Kris Aquino was recently launched as the first celebrity brand endorser of LBC Express, Inc., the leading courier service, logistics and money remittance provider in the Philippines.

Unboxing Love with Kris Aquino and LBC

Just as Kris’ every step continues to capture the collective imagination of the Filipino people wherever they are, LBC brings the “padama” in every “padala” with 4,400 branches, partners, and agents in more than 20 countries. Before the event, guests were asked to name their favorite city and if they thoughtfully did, they would receive a box full of goodies representing that city - a curated mix of signature delicacies, curios, and fun stuff. Some of the surprised guests were lucky enough to receive their packages the morning after the event. Two weeks later, happy guests are still posting their boxes full of treats from around the world. To highlight LBC’s global presence, employees from as far as Italy, United Arab Emirates, and the United States of America personally greeted Kris Aquino through a wall-to-wall panoramic screen in The Eye at Green Sun. A high-energy video montage of employees around the world dancing also entertained the excited crowd. What can be expected when two of the most recognizable Filipino names join forces for a night of food, drinks, games, and prizes? A night of fun and revelry. The launch was headlined by Kris, and she was joined by Santiago G. Araneta, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer; Miguel A. Camahort, Chief Operating Officer; and Mr. and Mrs. Carlos Araneta, the founders of the courier service in 1952. Guests and VIPs were treated to food by Chef Margarita Fores that reflected both LBC and Kris’ global presence. Fores created tailor-made courses inspired by the shores of the Philippines, like the roast Bacolod-style lechon stuffed with Cerveza Negra and mango tamarind, to Italy’s fresh fettuccine tossed in parmigiano-

Mr. and Mrs. Carlos Araneta, the founders of LBC Express in 1952, enjoys a Champagne toast with CEO Santi Araneta, Kris Aquino, Marta Araneta, and Ronda Pilipinas founder Dino Araneta at From LBC to the World with Love, the launch of Kris Aquino as LBC’s first celebrity brand endorser

reggiano wheel, Spain’s paella valenciana, Hong Kong’s star-anise braised pork belly, and Japan’s sustainable tuna and salmon sashimi. To make the event more fun, attendees were asked to tweet their dream gift using the hashtag #LBCPadalaPlease. Some tweeted for the latest gadgets, while others wished for a love life. Several members of the press were also asked to play the Box or Cash game where they were asked to choose an LBC box, and to decide whether they want the mystery gift or P10,000 in cash. Most chose their box, with the players winning an iPad Air 2, GoPro Hero 4, Samsung Galaxy S6, an LED television, a refrigerator, a Samsung tablet, a plunger, or a watermelon. One player selected the P10,000, losing a Nikon D5300 camera. But the delectable food was not enough to keep everyone’s excitement from finding out the secret celebrity brand endorser. As the lights dimmed and conversations fell into a hush, photos of Kris appeared on the panoramic screen, filling the room with her presence. It was followed by the airing of LBC’s two newest commercials, which showed how Kris is present all over the world. The humorous clips showing Kris popping up from books, posters, and online ads proved that both LBC and Kris are a part of every Filipino’s life. “LBC simplifies life because there are certain products that I need to purchase www.filipinostarmagazine.com

that are just available in the United States,” shared Kris when she entered. “We’re building a new house and a lot of my kitchen supplies are coming in via LBC. There are boxes as big as me, so you can expect na pupunuin ko ‘yun.” The Flippin’ Soul Stompers heightened the party atmosphere with their soulful rendition of the Reel 2 Real classic “I Like To Move It” while Kris Aquino shared the stage with the Aranetas, who came to support the launch. A Champagne parade was held to celebrate this partnership. With the partnership of LBC and Kris Aquino, more and more Filipinos will feel the love from their relatives abroad, no matter the distance. They will continue their commitment that there is “padama sa bawat padala.” About LBC Express LBC Express, Inc. was founded in the 1950’s as a brokerage and air cargo agent. Now the largest Express Courier, Cargo, and Money Remittance Service Company in the Philippines, LBC also provides its services in over 18 countries worldwide. For more than 60 years, LBC has been moving lives, business and communities for the global Filipino, providing hassle-free delivery via air, land, and sea-- from cash remittances to payment solutions, from simple parcels and packages to container loads for corporate logistics. Enrique Iglesias Suffers Bloody Injury in Drone Accident at Tijuana, Mexico Concert

E

nrique Iglesias suffered a bloody injury in a freak accident involving a drone at one of his concerts.

The 40-year-old Latin pop singer was performing in front of some 12,000 people at Plaza de Toros de Playa in Tijuana, Mexico as part of his Sex and Love world tour last May 29 when a drone used to capture photos hovered near him. He grabbed it and some of his fingers were sliced. “Last night, Enrique had a show at a bullfight ring in Tijuana, Mexico for

12k+ people as part of his Sex and Love world tour. During the show, a drone is used to get crowd shots and some nights, Enrique grabs the drone to give the audience a Point of View shot,” his representative told E! News. “Something went wrong and he had an accident.” “He was semi-treated by crew on the side of the stage to try and stop the bleeding,” he added. “He was advised to stop the show. He decided to go on and continued

nd North West is going to be a big sister.

Husband and wife, Kanye and Kim had been very vocal of their plans on trying to grow their family of three. Kim had a scare months ago, her doctor said her placenta had grown onto her uterus after giving birth to North. The Keeping Up with the Kardashians star had to go through a surgery to clean up her uterus and had to go to hormonal injections for her to bare another child. In one episode of the KYWTK, Kim was asked by her doctor, fertility expert Dr. Andy Huang if she has any questions. Kim answered, ““No, I’m, like, so over it… Like, I’m exhausted, so I’m sure everyone gets to that point.”” But their hard work and eagerness had paid off for Kim is now pregnant with baby number two! In the mid-season finale teaser of KYWTK, Kim beamingly told her sister Khloe, ““I just got the blood test back,

happen, so I’m to the point now where it’s not as stressful to me. And maybe that’s when they say it happens.” The couple had also got to the point wherein they would resolve to hire a surrogate mother as the worst case scenario solution. M

ANILA – Although she has been mum about the details of her upcoming wedding with director Paul Soriano, Toni Gonzaga revealed in a magazine interview where they are planning to tie the knot.

Toni reveals venue of wedding with Direk Paul

Citing the TV host’s interview in the June issue of Metro Weddings magazine, entertainment site Push reported that Gonzaga and Soriano will get married at a church in the actress’ hometown in Taytay, Rizal for “sentimental reasons.” “It’s a little tricky holding the ceremony in the church I grew up in Taytay, but that’s where I had a lot of my firsts. It’s where I first sang. It’s where I [was] first told I could start a singing career,” she said. “It’s also my parents’ dream to see me marry in that church, so I want to make it happen,” she added. In the same interview, the TV host also shared that she will be wearing a gown by popular American fashion designer Vera Wang. “Even before Paul proposed, I’d always drop by a Vera Wang boutique when I was abroad, just to admire the dresses,” she said. Until today, Gonzaga and Soriano have yet to reveal when their marriage will take place. Gonzaga, however, was thrown a bridal shower just last May 31 on “ASAP,” an indication that the wedding may happen soon.

‘Beauty and brains’ celebs

I

t’s June again and as we very well know by now, it’s “Back to School” for our Kababayans in the Philippines. But do you know that we have Filipino celebrities who excelled not only in the entertainment field but also in the academe? ABSCBNNews.com gave a blow by blow of celebrities who have excelled both in their undergraduate and graduate studies. Miss Saigon Lea Salonga graduated a salutatorian in elementary and valedictorian in highschool. Nikki Gil graduated a valedictorian at Shekinah Christian Training Center in highschool and took up AB Literature in Ateneo De Manila University. “King of Talk” Boy

Abunda took up his Masters of Intrernational Relations and Public Diplomacy at the Philippine Women’s University and AB Communication Arts for his undergraduate studies with the same university. Maricar Reyes-Poon- is a board passer of the 2008 Physician Licensure Exam, graduated from the Doctor of Medicine faculty of the University of Santo Tomas and took up her pre-med BS Biology at the Ateneo De Manila University. Asia’s Next Top Model host Georgina Wilson took up her BS Economics under the ‘Honors Program’ at the Ateneo De Manila University and her Bachelor of Commerce, Majors in Accounting and Finance (Double Major) at

in Chinese Studies under the same university. Comedienne Giselle Sanchez graduated a Magna Cum Laude under BA Broadcast Communication at the University of the Philippines-Diliman. Actress Agot Isidro graduated a Magna Cum Laude with the course Fashion Buying and Merchandising Fashion Institute of Technology, New York and took up her MA in Communication at the Ateneo De Manila University and BS Interior Design University of the Philippines-Diliman. Former child star Serena Dalrymple took up her Masters of International Business at the Hult International Business School of London and BS Business Administration at De La Salle College of St. Benilde. Former Miss International Melanie Marquez graduated a Cum Laude under BS Business Administration International Academy of Management and Economics. Would you still stereotype celebrities as just plain beauty? Doubt it.

Happenings Around Town GMA Pinoy TV opens 10th anniversary celebration with jampacked concert in Vancouver

C

elebrating a milestone ten years of bringing Filipinos abroad closer to home, GMA Pinoy TV kicked off its yearlong anniversary celebration with Philippine Comedy Queen Ai-Ai delas Alas along with Christian Bautista, Alden Richards, Jonalyn Viray and Betong Sumaya. Ai-Ai, who made a welcome comeback in the Kapuso Network via the romantic-comedy series Let the Love Begin, came prepared with her funny antics and gimmicks. In one of her segments, she even wore a costume that had a switch to change the color of the lights that were wrapped around her. “Maraming maraming salamat po sa lahat ng tumangkilik ng aming show. Kami po ay nagagalak dahil napakarami pong taong sumuporta sa 10th anniversary celebration ng GMA Pinoy TV. Sana po ay wag kayong magsawa na mag-subscribe at manood ng lahat ng mga shows ng GMA sa GMA Pinoy TV,” expresses Ai-Ai right after the show in Vancouver. Alongside Ai-Ai, actor, comedian and Survivor Philippines Celebrity Doubles Showdown Winner Betong Sumaya brought Antonietta, his beloved character in the Philippines’ longest running gag show Bubble Gang, in both shows, and received positive feedback. Antonietta, never breaking her character, opened both events with spiels encouraging the attendees to post on social media with the hashtag #Sampuso. “Amazing, amazing, amazing! Salamat po sa mga kababayan natin. Sana ay lagi niyo pong suportahan ang GMA Pinoy TV para lagi kayong amazing,” says Betong, emphasizing his famous catchphrase. Meanwhile, Fearless Diva Jonalyn Viray showcased her worldclass vocal prowess in her segments. The crowd particularly loved her segment with Christian Bautista, where they performed theme songs from GMA shows Mulawin, The Half Sisters, and The Rich Man’s Daughter, among others. Jonalyn also expressed her gratitude to everyone who came to see them perform, “Sa lahat po ng mga nanood, maraming maraming salamat mula sa aming mga puso. Salamat po sa pagsuporta sa GMA at GMA Pinoy TV.” Another member of the Kapusong Pinoy cast Christian Bautista, known as Asia’s Romantic Balladeer, got the audience mesmerized and singing along with his performances. He even invited lucky audience members up onstage to sing and dance with him. Christian relays his message of love and thanks to the attendees of the shows, “Maraming salamat po sa inyong pagmamahal. Talagang feel na feel po namin. Proud po kami na nakantahan namin kayong lahat. Mahal na mahal po namin kayo.” www.filipinostarmagazine.com

Filipino Star Magazine. Vancouver Edition. June, 2015

june HOROSCOPE ASTROTWINS, ASTROLOGY FORECAST Feeling a bit sluggish on the 1st? You’ve got nothing to worry about, cuz everything seems shiny and new on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, inagawa itong halos imposible para sa iyo upang manatili sa kama hanggang tanghali o maging sa isang masamang mood! Those inner voices are screaming at you for a reason.

You know all of that stuff you swept under the rug last month? Well, it’s about to be exposed on the 1st. Oops! Backing away from challenges isn’t really your style right now. There’s a definite ‘hang on loosely but don’t let go’ vibe in one of your relationships on the 7th and 8th, especially if you’ve agreed to keep things casual.

Well aren’t you just the perfect picture of contentment on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th! Everything seems to be going right... knock on wood. Hopefully you can keep the momentum going until the 9th and 10th, because things get a little bit muddled on those days. Where are your keys? Where did you leave your phone? What did your sweetie ask you to pick up on you way home, was it the dry cleaning or deodorant? Ugh, you hate feeling like you’d lose your head if it wasn’t attached.

You know that feeling you have deep down on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th that you keep ignoring? The one that’s trying to tell you something important? Actually paying attention to it is a very good idea - it could save you a lot of heartache. You’re in the mood to share one of your juicy secrets on the 9th and 10th, but - whoa - if you end up telling it to someone who spreads it around, you’ll be a social media outcast or laughing stock. Maybe you should keep it to yourself after all.

They say it’s lucky to be able to pick your friends because you can’t pick your family, and you’re really feeling that on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. Would you spend your free time around these people if you could avoid it? Probably not, but right now they need you and you’re too good of a person not to help them out! You discover new ways of doing things - especially when it comes to organizing your stuff - on the 7th and 8th that could really change your life

You’re totally unaware of the amazing effect you have on people on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, aren’t you!? You’re a ball of energy, rolling over everything in your path, but not in a bad way. Your enthusiasm is contagious, so keep on goin’! You’re one-of-a-kind on the 9th and 10th, and your original ideas are wanted by think tanks, educational institutions, and prestigious government organizations, but you’re perfectly happy to sit home with your friends or loved ones playing board games and acting childish (in a good way).

Once your mind is made up on the 5th and 6th, there’s no convincing you otherwise. No way. Not even a little! Stubborn much?! Admitting there’s more than one way to do things is easier for you for some reason on the 7th and 8th, and the world better get ready for some wacky ideas to come their way. It’s fun to play the mad scientist, especially when your inventions are actually helpful, or at the very least entertaining.

You’re not in the mood to sit still on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, so why not take a trip? If you can only manage a few days, that’s better than nothing. Or if you’re really crunched for time, even taking the long way home satisfies a little bit of that wanderlust you’ve got going. Halos lahat makakasundo mo on the 7th and 8th, so get out there and mix and mingle. Right” but you can’t be afraid to talk to strangers.

Enter all of the sweepstakes and contests that you can on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, and sign up for free memberships, call in old debts, clip coupons - you deserve everything that comes your way, Aquarius dear, and you shouldn’t have to work for it! You’re a true inspiration to others on the 7th and 8th, especially young children.

If you’re feeling a little down or worn out on the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th, do something to make yourself feel better. It would be nice kung meron kang ‘someone’ na magdadala sayo ng lunch or sasamahan kang magpa-massage, but if that magical person doesn’t exist in your life, pamper yourself. You’ve got a lot of drive on the 9th and 10th, but it still feels like you’re spinning your wheels. In quicksand.

You’ve got serious swagger on the 1st, and, yes, the self-confidence you’re radiating right now is enough to rival the energy of the Sun, so don’t let it go to waste. It takes a lot for you to label a situation or problem ‘urgent,’ but that’s just what you do on the 7th and 8th. The energy around you is a little bit weird, but luckily this ‘off feeling’ only lasts for a couple days.

Stand up and speak your mind on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. You’ve got a lot to say, and there are a lot of people listening. Good thing you’ve got some serious chutzpa; your courage definitely helps you get through some unsure moments! Do you have friends in high places? Or does someone owe you a favor? It’s time to cash in on the 5th and 6th; don’t be afraid to ask for what you have coming to you. There are some really intriguing things in front of you on the 11th and 12th, and you excel at solving riddles and puzzles.

Lutong Nanay: Ginataang Kamansi

A

By: Mrs. Z.

s per Wikipedia, “Kamansi (Artocarpus camansi Blanco) is a single-stemmed evergreen tree. It is a wild ancestor of Rimas (Artocarpus altilis) found in the Philippines. It can be readily distinguished from its close relative, Rimas (Artocarpus altilis), by its very spiny fruits with little pulp and numerous large, light brown seeds.” Many are not familiar with this dish but if you love eating dishes cooking in coconut milk, I guarantee you; you are going to love this one too! Go on, read the ingredients and cook it for yourself and your family. Ingredients: 2 cans, canned bread fruit in water, rinsed and washed in cold water Half a bundle of sitaw (string beans), cut into 4-5 parts. 1 small purple onion, chopped 3 cloves garlic, minced 4 tbsp. bagoong 1 can coconut milk 1/2 cup water 2 tbsp. Patis (Squid brand) 1/4 cup vinegar Pepper to taste 1 tbsp. Coconut oil 2 red chili (optional) Procedure: Heat the coconut oil. Saute the onion then the garlic and the bagoong. Cook for 2 mins. Add the chopped breadfruit (kamansi) pieces and your sitaw, stir well for another 2 mins. Add in the all the ingredients except the coconut milk. Cover and simmer for 10 minutes in low heat. Once simmered, take the lid off and add the coconut milk in high heat to reduce the liquid. Do not cover or else it will curd. Mix well and simmer for another 10 minutes. Serve with steam parboiled rice and fried fish. Nanay Notes: Ginataan dishes are great for allergies. This dish is very high in fiber and will lessen your craving for rice and fiber is really good for your digestion as it cleanses one's colon.
