NFF PROFESSIONALS DIGITAL FILM LIBRARY The NFF Professionals Digital Film Library is back with a wide selection of leading films produced in the Netherlands over the past 12 months. A variety of English subtitled film and TV productions from the Netherlands online. Most NFF competition titles will be viewable in the library. The Digital Film Library itself is accessible via nff.picturepipe.net. It is also possible to watch a wide range of English subtitled film and TV productions on the big screen, in the international screenings of the Nederlands Film Festival. Furthermore, through the screening platform, attending film professionals will be able to access other NFF highlights, such as recent student and short films and new Dutch television productions. Badge holders will have online access to the NFF Professionals Digital Film Library from September 25th to October 15th. BLOODY MARIE Successful in a distant past, cartoonist Marie Wankelmut has been living in Amsterdam’s Red Light District for twenty years. She lacks inspiration and is plagued by guilt towards her deceased mother. Marie alternately drinks and frets, creating less and less. Growing isolation, an ever messier life and dipsomania land her in one conflict after another. Until a horrible event at her next door neighbours sobers her up. Although the film, the characters and the creator (apart from a director, Guido van Driel is a cartoonist himself) suggest otherwise, this story is not based on a cartoon.

Incorporating archive footage and interviews with surviving relatives, the documentary tells the story of the man whose designs and ideas led to the invention of the Volkswagen Beetle, but who ultimately lost everything. In 2003, he was arrested in Spain for raping and assaulting three women in one night. When newfound DNA proved the offender was someone else, Romano was released. The documentary shows how Romano – who was only partly acquitted of the charge – is still fighting to prove his innocence and at the same time it shows how thin the line is between good and bad. After all, is Romano as innocent as he claims he is?

When their dad has fled to Iran, the brothers are suddenly the only men in the house. Between the impressions of the protagonists’ everyday life, they talk directly to the camera about their worries, dreams and nightmares.

LIVING THE LIGHT - ROBBY MÜLLER The groundbreaking Dutch director of photography Robby Müller knew like nobody else how to play with the sun and catch the rays like butterflies. In his hands, the camera turned into a music instrument that made everybody dance and illuminated the world. For her film essay, Claire Pijman got access to Müller’s personal archive: thousands of Hi8 video diaries, personal photographs and Polaroids Müller made during his career, while shooting with masters like Wim Wenders, Jim Jarmusch and Lars von Trier.

SCARED OF REVOLUTION As a member of The Last Poets, a group of performance artists articulating the progressive zeitgeist from the late 1960s, Umar Bin Hassan (1948) had a strong influence on later hip hop artists. In one of his best-known lyrics, for Niggers Are Scared of Revolution, he slams his black brothers’ destructive macho behaviour. This portrait mainly concentrates on Hassan’s personal life, where he is still grappling with demons. He grew up in poverty and had a violent, capricious father. Hassan himself, partly due to his crack addiction, left a sad trail of broken relationships and children without a father figure. Older now, he wants to break this destructive cycle.

Illustrated by therapeutic sessions of two different men, added to her personal story, she tries to find answers to pressing questions. Super 8 home movies of arbitrary families act as mirrors, showing anonymous faces with emotions we all know or recognise.

CAMINO, A FEATURE LENGTH SELFIE (ORIGINAL TITLE: CAMINO, EEN FEATURELENGTH SELFIE) Martin de Vries decides to go and walk the Camino, the famous pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, without any considerable preparation: from Le Puy en Velay in central France to the Spanish northwest; a thousand mile peregrination. During the nearly seventy walking days, he films himself, his feet, his shadow, the path, the fields and the woods, trying to understand why he took on this adventure. He learns to be ‘in the moment’ and step by step examines, more and more frankly, his motives and his demons. Directing debut of De Vries, an editor (e.g. for Van Kooten & De Bie) and the founder of NostalgieNet. Up to the start of the NFF, this was the documentary that scored the highest box office rates this year.

InSi Fan (‘yearning for love’), Guo combines the traditional opera from his native Sichuan region with his own music, following his heart. Chief conductor Ed Spanjaard and Shen Tiemei, star singer of the Sichuan Opera, also talk about the differences between East and West, and between old traditions and modern times.

The film based on the director’s personal experiences – describes the fear and loneliness caused by other people’s ignorance, and evokes the alienation and timelessness of the experience with poetical images and suggestive sounds. The documentary sees absences as much more than an affliction: as a phenomenon that raises questions about the bounds of our consciousness.

But what if your sleep is so intense it disrupts your life during the day? This documentary explores the beauty as well as cruelty of our sleep mode. Various people tell about their sleeping problems, varying from an insomniac life to apocalyptic nightmares. The logic of the dream trounces reality, as the film gradually changes into a feverish, titillating mosaic of radical sleeping experiences.

SYLVANA, DEMON OR DIVA (ORIGINAL TITLE: SYLVANA, DEMON OF DIVA) One moment in the daily talkshow DWDD, when Martin Simek labelled boat refugees as ‘darkeys’, caused TV host Sylvana Simons to make a transfer to politics. With her party BIJ1, she fights against racism and for equal rights and opportunities. She draws from her own experience as a black woman and does not mince words. This elicits some quite fierce reactions: every day, Simons receives hate mails and death threats. The documentary follows her during her campaign for a seat on the Amsterdam city council.

She ends up in heavy, honking traffic, in a deserted landscape with grass and in a forest with wild animals. With the help (again) of the scarf, she eventually gets back on the right road. But in other instances they treat people just as disrespectfully and mercilessly as vice versa. This animated short holds up a mirror to the viewer, showing the love people feel for animals, as well as the suffering they cause them, consciously or unconsciously. In the second season of this comedy series, the new schoolyear has dawned at elementary school De Klimop and all the familiar faces gather on the schoolyard. Hannah’s promotion to classroom mother puts the fragile balance in the schoolyardparent hierarchy on edge. The school is still struggling with the decreasing number of pupils, so every new pupil is firmly embraced and the teachers put out all the stops not to lose any children to other schools. And there is some commotion around the Christmas celebration and Paassover.
