Bella Donna’s Following the funeral of their friend Bella, who died tragically, three bosom friends decide to tick off her bucket list in celebration of her life. This mainly yields memorable moments, from parachuting and Formula 1 racing to a Brazilian wax. But other entries form a bigger challenge. Number three may be harmlessly halfway down the list, but it truly is no piece of cake to find true love. Adventurous, romantic comedy about how life, friendship and true love obviously do not hinge on a list.

Feature Films

Director Jon Karthaus Lenght 90 min. Year 2017 Language Dutch Country The Netherlands Producer Maarten Swart Production Kaap Holland Film B.V.

Cobain This raw mother-son drama, which primarily makes you see and feel things, betrays Leopold’s preference for stories about outcasts, those who have to plod to make something of their lives. Cobain (15) runs away from his foster family, because he is worried about his homeless, addicted mother Mia. When he insists that she look for help for herself and her forthcoming baby, they have a terrible blowout. Not much is to be expected from Mia's ex, pimp Wickmayer, either. Desperate, Cobain forces her to go in rehab. Then, tragedy strikes. At the movie première at the Berlinale, rookie actor Bas Keizer received praise for his impressive debut performance.

Engel Koen Mortier made his sweeping film debut with ExDrummer, adapted from Herman Brusselmans’ novel, and now sets his sights on the work of another famous Flemish man of letters: Dimitri Verhulst. In this adaptation of his Monoloog van iemand die het gewoon werd tegen zichzelf te praten, set in Senegal, the paths of African beauty Fae and worldfamous sportsman Thierry cross. The racing cyclist and the prostitute have in common they have to exert their physique to reach their highest potential, in order to please their fans and customers. Thierry falls headoverheels for Fae. They find dignity in each other, as well as the hope to free themselves from their dire straits. But when Thierry is intoxicated one night, starts acting strange and turns out to be dead the next morning, the innocent Fae is arrested. To be able to go on with her life, she has to return to the room where it all started.

La Holandesa Maud and Frank go on holiday to Chile to make a fresh start. After years of trying, they have to cope with the fact their desire to have children will remain unfulfilled. But Maud refuses to accept this and runs off after a terrible blowout. All by herself, she travels from the south of Chile to the north. En route, she befriends a little boy, Messi, whom she takes in tow. Actually, this singular road movie has a third protagonist: the breathtaking landscape of Chile. Firsttime feature director Marleen Jonkman and crew made the same trip as Rifka Lodeizen’s character does in the movie, 4500 kilometres from Santiago to Patagonia, ending on the barren but magnificent salt planes.

Tegnap Project developer Victor Ganz owns a thriving civil engineering company that operates worldwide. Due to big problems on a building site in North Africa, he is forced one day to travel to the capital of the country where deeply buried childhood memories catch him unawares. He is plunged into a labyrinthine world, where past and present intertwine. His orderly and comfortable life, with his family at the centre, is thoroughly shaken in this drama. The NFF annually spotlights several international coproductions that were realised with a substantial contribution by Dutch professionals: from actors to producers and from sound designers to composers. In most cases, the NFF screens these films for the first time in the Netherlands, after they had their world premières at prestigious festivals such as Locarno, Toronto and Sundance. In Q&As, the Dutch professionals will elaborate on their expertise. Tegnap, Zie mij doen, Holiday and Bloeistraat 11 have their Dutch premières at the NFF. Engel, Patser and Taxi Stories are the other titles in this section. Feature Films

Aan de andere kant Two seemingly sleepy villages awaken at the break of dawn of globalisation. While some inhabitants of Bakel try to go with the flow of the developments of modern life, others frenetically cling to nostalgic ideas of what their Noord-Brabant residence used to be. In this documentary, the village of Bakel in the Netherlands and the village of Bakel in Senegal are portrayed. It is precisely the persistent mirroring of these two villages that makes this observing film a universal portrait of man, playing with stereotypes and filled with paradoxes.

The Atomic Soldiers While doing research for a feature film, filmmaker Morgan Knibbe (Those Who Feel the Fire Burning, 2014) collected the personal accounts of the few witnesses of the American nuclear tests in the 1950s who are still alive. For the ten-year-old Bachir, the sea is a big mystery, because he only knows sand, lots of sand. The stateless and undocumented Bachir gets the chance to go on summer camp. Becoming It all starts with one cell that proliferates, then two and so on. This film about the miracle of the origin of life reveals, down to the smallest details, inside a transparent egg, the 'making of' of an embryo of the alpine newt. This single cell produces a complete, complex living organism with a beating heart and circulating blood. The film shows a process that normally remains invisible: the very beginning of the life of an animal. A process, by the way, that is not very different in humans.
