Point of view

MICHAL SIKORA

FIM Europe President

We have just finished the FIM Europe Congress held for the second in the Hilton Fiumicino Airport Hotel which is very well connected to the ancient town of Rome. I would like once again to thank the FMIItalian Motorcycling Federation for their support in preparing this meeting!

Our sporting season is in the middle of the way. We are observing a very good attendance of riders and are happy that all the series, those with promoters or without promoters, are on the right organisational level. We strongly believe in our Championships and Cups and the proof is that some of them, like Sidecarcross and Quadcross of European Nations or Yamaha BluCru, were promoted to the World level.

We had a chance to come back to the Beyond Sporting initiative which was held in the past. Thanks to the efforts of 2aa Deputy President Roy N. Wetterstad and FIM Europe Public Affairs Commission Members new edition of Policy Conference was launched. We had good and valuable discussions about lobbying and policy work for the sport and beyond sport motorcycle matters.

This Magazine consists of a lot of information about European events and our activities. I hope you will like the content and will enjoy reading. We are continuing our work for improving motorcycling in Europe!

DALILA AGRATI

FIM Europe Press Officer

Dear readers, glad to introduce you to the second issue of the FIM Europe Magazine.

These last three months have been very intense with the start of all the European Championships and Cups. Calendars are at the height of the season and all disciplines are racing an exciting season with fights, battles, overtaking, emotions, wins and defeats.

This #02 issue has also a special supplement. A few days ago, the 28th FIM

Europe Congress was held in Fiumicino, Rome. Our family was reunited for three thrilling days of meetings. It has been a pleasure to celebrate with you another year of work.

I would like to thank all of you, my colleagues of the FIM Europe and the FMI Federation and staff for the efforts and dedication in preparing the Congress.

Looking forward to seeing you soon again!

Remembering Wolfgang Srb and

It is with deep sadness that the FIM Europe announced the passing of

Mr Wolfgang Srb suddenly passed away on the 1st of June.

Born on August 19th 1948 in Vienna, he was passionate about all aspects of motorcycling, above all of the Motocross discipline. His initiative to work with a complete dedication for developing the MXGP World Championship was paramount in the success of the series.

Srb spent his youth as a keen rally car racer and avid motorsport fan. He approached to the world of motorbikes in the early eighties as a Sporting Steward of the Austrian Federation, attending the FIM Motocross World Championships to support fellow countryman and 1984 and 1985 FIM Motocross 250cc World Champion Heinz Kinigadner as a member of the jury.

In late 1984 he joined the FIM Motocross Commission. In 1987 Srb was already an instructor at seminars for aspiring FIM officials before being elected CMS Vice President in 1989, promoted to CMS President in 1993 and then to CMS Director from 2011 to 2014.

From 2002 to 2006 he was FIM Europe Vice President and in 2014, on occasion of the Congress in Krakow, he was elected FIM Europe President, holding the position until late 2018.

In 2019 he was appointed Honorary FIM Europe President.

He worked with passion and professionalism, creating strong relations in the FIM Europe.

He will always be remembered as a key-figure of our family.

Peter Hansen of two key-figures.

Member of the Motocross and Snowcross Commission since 2010 Peter Hansen tragically passed away on the weekend of April 6th after a short time of illness.

Peter has been a long-time volunteer in DMU’s Motocross Commission and FIM Europe, holding the office of vice-president of the Motocross and Snowcross commission from 2011 until 2022.

He was a member of Sønderborg Motor Club and he got into the motocross sport and DMU when his son started racing years ago.

With Peter’s passing, the FIM Europe family loses a great and dedicated volunteer.

We’ll all miss his kindness and efforts.

Final A

In a display that met expectations, Denmark’s squad took a decisive win in Pardubice, perfect set for Final A in the Czech Republic. Leading the pack, Mads Hansen stood out as the event’s highest scorer, dropping just a single “point”, with Matic Ivačič being the sole competitor to outpace him. Close behind, Michael Michelsen and Anders Thomsen nearly achieved perfect scores, with the latter notably securing his points across only three heats. In a similar vein, Bastian Pedersen, also competed in three heats, gathering four points.

Finishing in the runner-up position, the home team from the Czech Republic saw Václav Milík at the forefront, amassing 12 points over six heats. Zdeněk Schneiderwind’s strategy to make a tactical switch by substituting Jan Macek with a Cellfast Wolves Krosno rider demonstrated a valiant effort though it didn’t clinch victory. Jan Kvěch’s performance was consistently strong, always crossing the finish line in second place, significantly aiding his team’s

success. Adam Bednář added to the team’s achievements with 9 points from five starts, bolstering his status as a hopeful prospect among Czech supporters.

The Norwegian team, participating for the first time in this competition, claimed the third-place position on the podium, with Mathias Pollestad playing a pivotal role. Pollestad remarkably earned more points than his teammates combined and was the only participant from Norway to win a heat, doing so on two occasions. Matic Ivačič, previously with Unia Tarnów, also made his mark by engaging in direct competition with his adversaries and earning 10 points.

Team Poland wins the Grand Final on home soil

Final

06th April

A large partisan crowd of around 5000 spectators were treated to an excellent afternoons Speedway at the European Team Speedway Championship Grand Final at Grudziądz, in north Poland.

With the Polish home side being seeded through to the Grand Final, they were joined by teams from Denmark, Sweden and the Czech Republic, who qualified through from two Finals the previous weekend at Pardubice in the Czech Republic and Gdańsk in Poland.

In line with the Track Racing rules for this event, each national team was allowed to include a Speedway Grand Prix rider within their line-up, so this was always going to be a close fought event. However, within the first four heats, the Poles had started to build a lead over the second placed favourites Denmark with Sweden in third and the Czech Republic forth.

As the meeting progressed during a warm sunny afternoon, the Poles continued to dominate cheered on by the buoyant crowd, with the team providing 13 out of a possible 20 heat wins. However, the Danes stuck to their guns in the vain hope that they might pick up points with either an engine failure or some other misfortune by the Polish team, but the five Poles remained focused on the job in hand, with the outcome that there were only two races where they didn’t take either a first or second place.

The meeting wasn’t without incident with young Czech rider Adam Bubba Bednar falling off in heat 9. Fortunately, he was uninjured and was quickly back on his feet, but he was excluded from the re-run by the Referee, as being the cause of the stoppage.

The meeting continued to gather pace until heat 18, when the Czech Daniel Kilma was caught out when he touched the starting tapes in anticipation of making a good start, though under the rules this is not allowed, and he too was excluded by the Referee. So, another heat where the Czech team didn’t collect any points.

In the very next heat young Swedish rider Casper Henrikson fell whilst entering the first bend, where he laid on the ground for a few moments. However, the medical team were soon on the scene and after a few minutes he was back on his feet.

By this late stage the Polish team had dominated the score line, much to the pleasure of the home crowd, and was soon to be crowned European Team Speedway Champion for 2024.

FIM Europe President Michal Sikora presented the gold winners medals to the home side, with the silver medals going to Denmark and bronze to Sweden.

After 4 Qualifying rounds, the Individual Speedway Championship raced the ECC in Daugavpils, Latvia.

The level of racing had been high, this was already visible in the training sessions with close racing between the riders, ready to fight and qualify for the final series.

In the first heats, the crucial factor was the start from the gate. Dimitri Berge showed a very good reaction in the first heat of the day, confidently securing a win. In the third heat, spectators witnessed an interesting battle between Thorssell and Cierniak throughout the distance, with the Swede ultimately emerging victorious.

In his second start, Anders Thomsen fired up. The acclaimed Dane showcased a phenomenal attack on Timo Lahti and celebrated a victory. Also notable was Piotr Pawlicki’s performance in his second race. In heat 7, the Pole defeated the previously unbeaten Janowski and Thorssell.

The younger of the Pawlicki brothers didn’t intend to stop and confidently sealed his second win in Daugavpils. Leading the event thanks to a victory over Andersen Thomsen, Maciej Janowski strengthened his position as the

leader of the competition. In three starts, the Pole lost only one point.

Magic began the fourth series with another heat win, thereby securing a place in the top five of the competition, which guarantees advancement to SEC 2024. Despite an earlier mechanical failure, Thomsen still fought for a chance to advance thanks to a victory in heat 15.

In the first heat of the final series, the Dane’s motorcycle malfunctioned for the second time, denying him the coveted advancement. In much better spirits, Piotr Pawlicki and Vaclav Milik ended the competition in second and third place, respectively. The last two spots granting advancement to this year’s series were decided in a runoff race. The city, about 2 hours from the capital Riga, welcomed riders of the Central Europe and North Europe Zone, in fight for the prestigious Loket Final that will be held in July. In perfect weather conditions, riders from 16 European countries showcased their skills in a thrilling competition. EMX65

Race 1 saw British rider Cohen Jagielski (GasGas), Luca Nierychlo (Husqvarna) from Germany and Rasmus Naar (KTM) from Estonia taking the top three positions. In the overall Nierychlo claimed first place, followed by Gardiner and Valk.

Luca Nierychlo said – “I had not a good start but I came in front and I am so happy for the overall first place. I hope all the other riders are okay and I aim to win in Loket”.

Motocross track RES Axel enhances safety with MYLAPS race control solution

RES Axel, a motocross facility in the Netherlands, pioneering the use of the cutting-edge MYLAPS MX Race Control solution.

Safety in motorsport is an important issue and is one of the focal points of the recently established MX-Masterplan. This initiative, set up by the Dutch motocross federations MON and KNMV, has the mission to preserve and strengthen motocross in the Netherlands. Under the support of the MX-Masterplan initiative, RES Axel has partnered with MYLAPS to implement automated track monitoring and warning capabilities. Five LED light panels have been strategically installed around the track to instantly display caution flags and other critical alerts.

Making Motocross

Safer

RES Axel chairman Rudi Adam emphasizes the importance of this technology: “Rider safety is a key focus for us. The current technology allows us to make great strides in that direction. We know MYLAPS as a professional partner because we have been using their timekeeping system for years. We

are looking forward to this and hope to make the sport safer, not only on our own track but eventually for riders everywhere.”

Instantly Spot Accidents

ous multi-rider collision.

Precise Rider Localization

The ability to pinpoint a stopped rider’s exact location on a track map using the race control software has revolutionized RES Axel’s emergency response protocol. Before implementing the MYLAPS race control system, track mar-

RES Axel has significantly improved its ability to identify potential accidents by implementing the MYLAPS X2 Race Control software’s automatic accident detection system. The software utilizes tracking devices mounted on riders’ bikes to instantly recognize when a competitor comes to an unexpected stop. This feature has proven particularly crucial in high-risk areas such as landing zones after jumps or in blind corners. In one instance, a rider fell after a large jump and was at risk of being hit by oncoming riders. The system immediately detected the stopped rider, allowing race control to respond within seconds, potentially preventing a seri-

shals had to rely on visual cues and radio communications to locate accidents, often leading to confusion and delays. Now, when an incident occurs, race control can see the precise location on a digital track map. This feature has allowed RES Axel to optimize the positioning of their emergency crews and equipment, resulting in faster response times.

Automated Warning System

The LED light panels have significantly enhanced rider safety at RES Axel. These panels, strategically placed before jumps and in other critical areas, automatically display warning flags when an incident is detected. This feature has proven invaluable in preventing secondary accidents. In a recent race, a rider fell on the landing of a large jump. The system immediately triggered yellow flag warnings on the LED panels approaching the jump, alerting the following riders to slow down and

proceed with caution. Multiple riders later reported that these warnings allowed them to adjust their speed and trajectory, avoiding what could have been a serious pileup.

Improved Overall Safety

Perhaps the most significant benefit RES Axel has experienced is the overall improvement in safety at the track. The implementation of the MYLAPS Race Control system has demonstrated to riders, teams, and spectators that the

track takes safety seriously. This has led to increased confidence among participants at RES Axel. The track has seen a decrease in the severity of accidents since implementing the system, as the quick response times often prevent minor incidents from escalating.

Customized Exclusion Zones

RES Axel has taken full advantage of the system’s ability to define custom exclusion zones. This feature has been particularly useful in the starting area, where riders naturally come to a stop before and after races. By designating this area as an exclusion zone, RES Axel has eliminated false alarms that previously caused unnecessary concern and distraction for race officials. RES Axel has also applied this feature

to the riders park, ensuring that the accident detection system focuses solely on active racing areas. This customization has greatly improved the system’s efficiency and reduced the likelihood of unnecessary alerts among the race control staff.

Rivera wins the opening round at Misano World Circuit

ROUND

05th- 07th April

With the first round out of eight, the SSP 300 Women's European Championship kicked off at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli, Italy.

In terms of women’s racing series, the Championship is setting the benchmark at the European level thanks to the hard work of FIM Europe and organisers EMG Eventi and MotoXracing, which have always believed in this project. A concept that dates back to 2020 with the creation of the Women’s European Cup, the series quickly grew in significance and last year became the Women’s European Championship.

Natalia Resel Rivera (Team Trasimeno) is the winner of the first race.

The young Spanish rider, who took the pole on Sunday

Misano, Italy

morning, fought against Josephine Bruno (Team Gradara) and Patrycja Sowa (Sowa Racing Team), who had been able to get ahead of Rivera when the lights went out. On lap two Rivera took the lead and held the first place to the chequered flag. Second placed rider Josephine Bruno put in a strong performance, but was unable to set the pace despite an aggressive start. Rider Patrycja Sowa rounds out a very positive weekend on the third step of the podium.

The chasing group closed much as it did in qualifying with Beatrice Barbera (GP3 AD11) fourth, followed by Arianna Barale (MRT Corse), Nicole Ciccilini (Prata Motorsport) and Silvia Comincioli (Team MotoXracing) and Denise Dal Zotto (Team MotoXracing). Saidatul Zakirah Zairin (GP3 AD11) and Maria Saluste (Motoclub Sinlind) completed the top ten.

Natalia Rivera wins round 2 in Italy

Cremona, Italy #02

07th- 09th June

The second round of the SSP 300 Women's European Championship took place at the newly renovated Cremona Circuit in Italy. Facilities at the venue are still under construction with new podiums being build preparing for the WSBK event in September.

The event covered both the Italian Championship for this class and the European. Riders from five different nations and two continental unions participate on Yamaha and Kawasaki bikes.

Tough conditions on Saturday for the free practice, Q1 and Q2, with the Spanish Natalia Rivera the fastest. The combined qualification established Riviera in pole position ahead of Italian riders Josephine Bruno and Nicole Cicillini.

When the lights went out, Patrycja Sowa made a lightning start from P4, moving straight into the lead and defending the position for almost three laps, with a persistent Bruno hot on her heels in second. Natalia was lying third until almost the mid-race point, when Bruno made a decisive pass on Sowa, moving into the lead and soon building a gap.

Championship leader Rivera wasted no time in responding and passed Sowa on lap seven before setting out in pursuit of the Team Gradara Corse rider. Spectators were treated to a breath-taking duel between Natalia and Josephine, who continued to exchange places and maintain a very strong race pace all the way to the chequered flag.

Two laps from the end, a decisive pass through the final sector saw Rivera ahead of her rival and secured her place on the top step of the podium. Second position for Josephine and third for Sowa.

Thanks to this win Natalia consolidates the leadership in the standings. Top five completed by Denise Dal Zotto, who was not quite able to achieve a top three, and Cicillini.

Race 2 kicked off on Sunday morning in perfect conditions. 14 laps full of overtaking for the first positions between Emiliano Malagoli, Picasso and Horky. Due to a double overtaking with a double yellow flag, the leader Picasso took a penalty of 30 seconds finishing 3rd. Malagoli won race 2 ahead of Horky.

In class 600cc victory another win for Lorenz ahead of Marinato.

Opening round at Misano World Circuit

ROUND

Misano, Italy #01

21st April

The curtains finally lifted on the 2024 Moto2 European Championship, ETC and Stock in the Motor Valley and Emilia-Romagna round at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli, and the Championship opener delivered on everything it promised with stars old and new shining throughout.

The first Moto2™ European Championship race of the 2024 campaign saw Alberto Surra (Team Ciatti – Bo -

scoscuro) claim first place with an accomplished ride. Meanwhile, in the first of the day’s two European Talent Cup races Giulio Pugliese (Aspar Junior Team) took victory in dramatic fashion. In the second, Marco Morelli (MLav racing) sealed an emotional first win in the class since 2020. The final winner of the day came in the Stock™ European Championship, with the familiar face of Lorenzo Dalla Porta (Yamaha GV Racing) returning to the top of the rostrum.

Following Surra in Moto2™ ECh were Roberto Garcia (Fantic Cardoso Racing) in P2 and Alberto Ferrandez (Finetwork Team) in P3. It was a hotly contested race with reigning MotoE™ World Champion Mattia Casadei (Team Ciatti – Boscoscuro) falling just short of joining his Team Ciatti teammate on the podium, finishing in fourth.

Moto2

ETC

In Race 1 of the ETC Marco Morelli found himself edged back into second place by Giulio Pugliese by a margin of just 0.009 seconds. The duo vyed for first throughout the closing stages of the encounter, while David Gonzalez (AC Racing Team) had a sudden loss of pace towards the end of the race and had to settle for third. Gonzalez joined Morelli once again on the podium in Race 2 of the ETC, this time able to pressure the leader right until the dying moments, eventually taking second. The two-time podium finishers were joined by Leonardo Zanni (Mir Racing Finetwork Team), who was made to work for the third step on the rostrum by Valentin Perrone (Frando Racing VHC Team) and an inspired Kerman Tinez (Mir Racing Finetwork Team) who finished P5 and P6 respectively.

Stock

Just behind Stock™ ECh race winner Lorenzo Dalla Porta came newcomer to the class Andy Verdoia (Team Honda Laglisse) and completing the podium in the final race of the day was Dino Iozzo (IUM Motorsports). Iozzo will rue the circumstances that saw him concede the race lead, with Adrian Rodriguez (SF Racing)’s crash resulting in a red flag and a restart, after which Dalla Porta seized the initiative.

Mixed weather conditions throw up some surprise results at the Circuito do Estoril

Estoril, Portugal

Rain, sun, then a bit more rain was the order of the day at the Circuito do Estoril, with debut winners emerging from the tricky conditions. Carlos Cano (SeventyTwo ARTBOX Racing Team) doubled up in the European Talent Cup, while Mattia Casadei (Team Ciatti – Boscoscuro) and Roberto Garcia (Fantic Cardoso Racing) shared the spoils in Moto2™. Meanwhile, in the Stock race, Adrian Rodriguez (SF Racing) became a winner in the class for the very first time.

Race 1 was all about Casadei’s wet weather dance to a commanding victory as the Italian sailed to his first 25 points in the class. 12 seconds was his advantage at the chequered flag over second place Jorge Navarro (Forward EEST Racing), the experienced Spaniard picking up a podium in his first outing, as Taiga Hada (GAS UP Racing Team) returned to the rostrum for the first time since 2021 with a well-earned P3. Race 2 saw contrasting conditions emerge as a dry race unfolded, with Garcia producing a scintillating comeback to claim a debut win from P15. Casadei didn’t have an answer for the Spaniard in the afternoon but a P2 – and 45 more points – sees him take the Championship lead into Round 3. Third place went to Alberto Ferrandez (Finetwork Team), that’s his second podium of the season, with Alberto Surra (Team Ciatti – Boscoscuro) crashing out in Race 2 as the Italian endures a tougher weekend at the office in Estoril. ROUND 05th May

Moto2

ETC

It was wet, but it was a wonderful performance from Cano in the opening European Talent Cup race of the day as the young Spaniard proved a ray of sunshine amid the miserable Estoril conditions on Sunday morning. The #71 went from pole to the top step in Portugal with almost six seconds in his back pocket as Misano victor Marco Morelli (MLav Racing) settled for second, with Fernando Bujosa (Team Estrella Galicia 0,0) coming through the long lap penalty loop and some stiff competition for the final podium place. Victory saw Cano move to within 20 points of title leader Morelli, with a second race to come.

It was a case of same outcome, different circumstances in Race 2 as Cano made it a perfect Portuguese weekend with another win, but this time it was much closer than a few hours earlier. In the dry conditions, the top 10 crossed the line 0.9s apart in a brilliant ETC encounter that saw Jesus Torres (Team Estrella Galicia 0,0) and Valentine Perrone (Frando Racing VHC Team) stand on the rostrum for the first time in 2024. After Morelli crashed out in Race 2, Cano tops the Championship heading to Barcelona.

Stock

In the final race of the day, drama was delivered in spades. Rodriguez came from P4 to take a maiden Stock Championship victory in a restarted race, with Iker Garcia (Yamaha GV Racing) and Francisco Ruiz (DR Andifer Team) debuting on the podium in the class. Having seen the track dry out after morning rain, the heavens opened once more after just three laps, with polesitter and then race leader Dino Iozzo (IUM Motorsports) highsiding and hitting the deck coming out of Turn 9. The red flags waved and the race restarted, but without the South African on pole as he and teammate Declan Van Rosmalen launched from pitlane after deciding not to go out with the rest of the field. That left Rodriguez unobstructed as he got the perfect launch, though Garcia, Ruiz and Alex Millan (Team Zivimotor) all took turns in the lead.

It was a tight-knit quartet until the final lap, when Rodriguez then posted the best race lap as he stole a march to victory, with Millan the one to lose out in an entertaining podium battle. Lorenzo Dall Porta (Yamaha GV Racing), Misano winner and current Championship leader, came home in a lonely P5 to preserve his lead.

Round 3 in Barcelona

ROUND 19th May

Barcelona, Spain

Round 3 head to amazing Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Spain, and the action did not disappoint. Dani Muñoz (Gas Up Racing Team) did the double in the Moto2™ European Championship. In the European Talent Cup, Marco Morelli continued to show what a future talent he is with victory, while Lorenzo Dalla Porta (Yamaha GV Racing) cemented his position atop the title standings in the Stock™ European Championship.

Moto2

Casadei struggling at the start and Muñoz, Navarro and Garcia breaking away, however, this time they were joined by Eric Fernandez (FAU55 TEY Racing) and Surra.

All five led the race at some point before Muñoz assumed control ahead of Navarro, and the two left the rest of the field in their wake and, in a repeat of Race 1, that’s how they finished.

The battle for the final podium position wasn’t over yet as Garcia held third ahead of a hard-charging Unai Orradre (STV Laglisse Racing) but on the penultimate lap it all changed as the #31 went from P3 to P5 and then out of the race as Orradre and Casadei, who had mounted another comeback, came steaming through. Garcia encountered technical difficulties and it was Orradre who claimed P3, with Casadei taking back the Championship lead ahead of Portimao.

ETC

In the European Talent Cup, Marco Morelli showed off his class to romp home to his second win of the campaign by 2.9s, with David Gonzalez (AC Racing Team) and Giulio Pugliese (CFMoto Aspar Team) joining him on the podium.

Morelli started from pole, and the Argentinian pulled the pin early to clear off into the distance to avoid a dramatic podium battle behind him. Carlos Cano (SeventyTwo Artbox Racing Team) came from the back of the grid and dragged a freight train of riders with him to catch Gonzalez and Pugliese in the podium places, and just as the Spaniard looked to make his move on the last lap, he was clipped by Valentin Perrone (Frando Racing VHC Team) and sent flying into the gravel to record a Barcelona blank. As a result, Morelli once again takes control of the Championship chase with two races coming up in Portimao.

Stock

As per usual, the Stock ECh rounded out the day’s proceedings as Lorenzo Dalla Porta sealed his second win of the campaign in scintillating style. Joining the Championship leader on the podium were Mario Mayor (Yamaha GV Racing) and Demis Mihaila (MDR Competition), with victory yet again decided on the final lap.

Mayor took the lead at Turn 1, and it looked like the Spaniard was set for a maiden win in the class, but a stunning Turn 12 move from polesitter Dalla Porta saw him fire it up the inside of the #82 for victory.

The atmosphere in Landshaag, Austria, was electric as the first round of the Hill Climb and Vintage Hill Climb European Championship took place thanks to the great organization of the MSC Rottenegg and all the members of the club.

On Sunday the track was dry and the day started with the continuation of the qualifying sessions from Saturday.

Double victory for Andrea Benvenuti

#01

ROUND

Andrea Benvenuti (Ktm MTR Racing) ruled both motos with incredible supremacy. In race 2, despite the poor start, the rider worked his way up and won. Second place went to Yevsevii Kovalyov (Husqvarna) and Nathan Terraneo (KTM) was third.

Race 1

Solo race for Andrea Benvenuti (KTM Mtr Racing), who pulled away at the start and took the lead without hesitation. The young rider did not make any mistakes on his Ktm 85cc 2 strokes and led the group from first to last lap. Nathan Terraneo (Ktm) moved to second place but could not keep the position and after a few laps where he tried to keep his rival behind, had to let him pass and qualified third. Yevsevii Kovalyov (Husqvarna) lost the chance to worry race leader in the two laps where he was third. Leonardo Lapadula (Team 11) was penalized for an early start and could not do any better than sixth place overall.

Race 2

At the start Andrea Benvenuti opened the clutch too early and his Ktm reared up so that Benvenuti had to slow down and was overtaken by Nathan Terraneo and Yevsevii Kovalyov.

Swiss Terraneo tried to set a solid race pace to keep rivals behind but did not consider Benvenuti. The rider kept an eye on his rivals for some laps and later attacked them, overtaking Yevsevii Kovalyov and moving to the top spot. Andrea opened a gap and pulled away, eventually winning the race.

Andrea Benvenuti went home with the first victory of the season and showed he is the rider to defeat in the 2024 season.

Surra is the new S4 champion

Benvenuti

consolidates the leadership in the Junior

ROUND

30th June

The second round of the S4 European Championship and the first one of the SM Junior European Championship took place at the Busca Kart Planet, Italy.

Alberto Surra (KTM) is the new Champion of the S4: the young Italian rider almost had a perfect weekend with the pole position and two victories out of three motos, second place went to Spanish Alex Rafael Gourdon (Husqvarna) and third position to another Italian rider, Mattia Rato (TM). In the Junior Andrea Benvenuti ruled the day and strengthened his leadership in the championship thanks to two confident victories.

S4 Race 1

A few minutes before the start, race directors called out a wet race and all the riders mounted rain tyres. As the red lights blinked off Alberto Surra (KTM) did not make the best out of his pole position losing several positions. The Gourdon brothers took the lead of the race but in the first lap Mattia Rato (TM) took the lead of the operations chased by Alex Rafael Gourdon (Husqvarna). Behind them Alberto Surra started to increase his phenomenal race pace and after a few laps moved up to the front. Surra and Rato opened a gap on their chasers and battled it out till the chequered flag. Alex Rafael Gourdon crossed the finish line in third position.

S4 Race 2

At the start of the second race of the European Cup Mattia Rato (TM) took the lead closely followed by Alberto Surra (KTM). The two Italians pulled away and during the race the rider with the TM bike took an advantage over his rival being able to manage the challenge. Unfortunately the unexpected is always round the corner and with a few laps before the end Rato broke the engine awarding the victory to Alberto Surra. Behind them there was a thrilling battle among several riders, with Antonino Navarria (Team Gazza Racing) protagonist of the show as he recovered to second place. Third position went to Spanish Alex Rafael Gourdon (Husqvarna).

S4 Race 3

The starting grid of the last race is defined according to the results of Race2. Surra kept the pole position but Mat-

Busca, Italy

tia Rato had to start from the last position. Surra made no mistakes at the start and immediately took the lead with an unbeatable rhythm for all the other riders which allowed him to go far from them. Surra was followed by Mattia Rato, who made an amazing recovery till second place, as well as Alex Rafael Gourdon and Antonino Navarria. With two laps to go there was a twist when Alberto Surra crashed giving the green light to Mattia Rato, who won in front of Gourdon and Navarria.

The outcome for the final victory was not affected by what happened, in fact Alberto Surra came home with the gold plate of the European Cup winner. The second step of the podium went to Alex Rafael Gourdon, while Mattia Rato was third thanks to the victory taken in the final moto.

SM Junior Race 1

Andrea Benvenuti (KTM MTR Racing) was the star performer of the Junior first race. The young Italian rider and his KTM were impeccable, with a solid start and a rhythm which allowed him to lead the race from the first to the last lap. A thrilling battle took place behind him between Daniele Cornolti (GasGas) and Yevsevii Kovalyov (Husqvarna) who got to the finish line in the same order. Andrea Benvenuti strengthened his advantage in the standings over his main rival.

SM Junior Race 2

As the red lights blinked off Kovalyov took the lead of the operations but made a mistake in the sky section and was overtaken by Daniele Cornolti who moved to the front and tried to pull away. Andrea Benvenuti cancelled the hesitation and started to chase the race leader. It took several laps for the KTM rider before being able to overtake his rival and head to the victory. Cornolti had to resist the attacks of Kovalyov who tried to overtake him till the end. Andrea Benvenuti came home with the second victory of the season and strengthened his position in the standings.

A mention about young rider Liliana Irzyk, winner of the 65cc class.

ROUND

24th - 27th May

The first round of the Dragbike European Championship and Dragbike Junior Cup took place from May 24th to 27th at Santa Pod Raceway, in Great Britain. An eventful event with tough weather conditions, after a sunny qualifying first day.

The heavy rain of Sunday and Monday did not allow to race regular sessions and in order to finish the race for most classes the organizer had to reduce the distance to a shorter 1/8 mile, where the top speeds are at a safer level to get to a stop.

In SuperTwin TopFuel won Marcus Christiansen from Denmark and runner-up Chris van Nimmen from Belgium. In ProStockBike P1 for Jörg Lymant from Germany and runner-up Bertrand Maurice from France. Marcus Christiansen from Denmark won the SuperTwin class.

Unfortunately, due to the heavy rain were not raced the TopFuelBike class final between Rikard Gustafson and Thomas Pettersson, and the SuperStreetBike final between Jake Mechaell and Chris Reed.

Challenging fight in the Junior Cup: at the end the class has been won by Hollie King with a runner-up Miss Leah Morrison, both from England.
