Joyous and explosively lyrical, the abstraction of Jose Joya gestures at the natural world, referencing its innate subtleties and moods. In this mixed media work, the National Artist has made used of strips inflected with filaments to reference the luminous surface of the sea. The moon hovers above these curvilinear shapes, steady and undeniable. For added effect, swirls of paint navigate the pictorial surface, imbuing the piece with dynamic energy. Asean Moon is an accomplished work by the master whose visual language is one of 20th century’s most resonant and lasting.

Lot 31 SOLOMON SAPRID Tikbalang 1972 Bronze 25.5 x 25.5 x 17 in (64.7 x 64.7 x 43.2 cm) PHP 750,000 - 950,000
Solomon Saprid has left behind a body of work notable for its re-imagining of local folkloric and mythological figures. None has been propelled to such a coveted status than his depiction of the “tikbalang,” the intriguing creature that has a human body save for a horse’s head and hooves. In this work, the tikblang’s long-limbed form almost verges on abstraction, as if the figure is undergoing a hectic process of transformation. The rough-hewn surface is characteristic of Saprid’s iconography, as well as a sculptural robustness that inflects his work with dramatic, sinewy tension.
23
Lot 32 ABDUL MARI IMAO Sarimanok 2014 Brass 16.5 x 17 x 11.5 in (41.9 x 43.1 x 29.2 cm) PHP 350,000 - 450,000
The only National Artist to have emerged from the Muslim South, Abdul Mari Asia Imao chronicled the rich tapestry of motifs from his region, imbuing it with a contemporary vigor and energy. Such is evident in this pair of Sarimanok sculptures, glittering in polished brass. Imao redefined the sarimanok iconography by subtracting the fish which usually dangles from the beak of the fabled bird. The bird’s spread-out wings repeat the fish’s flattened fins, which deliver a sense of propulsion to the form. Magisterial and consummate, these Imao sculptures extol the legendary bird of the Maranaos symbolizing good fortune.

Lot 38 JIGGER CRUZ Untitled Undated Oil on canvas 53 x 43 in (134.6 x 109.2 cm) PHP 1,000,000 - 2,000,000
Famed for his juxtaposition of figuration and abstraction, Jigger Cruz has emerged as one of the strongest midcareer artists whose field of vision encompasses the materials and subject matter of art. In this work, one gleans the underpainting of a portrait of a Western subject beneath the hectic calligraphic strokes that cover her from our view. The abstraction, which defaces and vandalizes the figure, is at once a commentary on and critique of traditions and conventions. The “violence is startling as it extends even to the frame of work, which shows a chip on the upper right hand side. This work is important in the canon of Cruz as it contains a still recognizable figure amid the tumult of paint.

Lot 49 ARTURO LUZ Desert Mirage 2011 Acrylic on canvas 30 x 30 in (76.2 x 76.2 cm) PHP 480,000 - 580,000 In Desert Mirage by Arturo Luz, we see the visual vocabulary of the National Artist distilled in a purity of form, evoked by his signature lines and bands of color. Horizontal lines confidently begin at the topmost of the composition only to wobble and intersect at the middle, as if to underscore the “mirage” alluded to in the title. Out of this deft distortion rise the curves and angles that suggest the domes and spires of a Middle Eastern city. His use of his trademark colors of black and white tonally creates an abstraction of spare, uncomplicated beauty—an economy of means that results in an expression of the highest order.

Lot 50 PACITA ABAD Lifesavers 1987 Acrylic and oil canvas embroidered mirrors and trapuntoed 33 x 34 in (83.8 x 86.3 cm) PHP 480,000 - 580,000

Lot 53 JUVENAL SANSO Blue Gardenia in Red 1996 Acrylic on canvas 47 x 67 in (119.3 x 170.1 cm) PHP 3,500,000 - 4,500,000
Juvenal Sanso has established his own brand of figuration in which a landscape or a bouquet in bloom achieves a startling presence, an unavoidable quality. In this depiction of a still life, the blue gardenia bristles with its explosion of rotund flowers and svelte leaves, set against a red background which renders a triadic color scheme to the blues and greens. A perfect circular disc serves as a punctuation to the composition, suggestive of a moon which in Sanso’s iconography is symbolic of mystery and the passage of time. All details cohere in this grandiose rendition of blue gardenias that appear to break into our world.

Lot 54 FERNANDO AMORSOLO Lavanderas 1933 Oil on masonite 13 x 19 in (33 x 48.2 cm) PHP 5,500,000 - 6,500,000

Lot 57 NORBERTO CARATING Laman-lupa 1974 Acrylic on masonite 48 x 60 in (122 x 152 cm) PHP 600,000 - 800,000
In Laman-Lupa, Norberto Carating titillates the imagination with his depiction of the elementals said to reside on the lumps and irregularities of the earth. With the figuration composed mostly of wavelike striations, we see them hunched over, their eyes meeting ours. Nothing in their visage suggests anything horrific and monstrous. Rotund, their expressions are calm, even friendly. This is a different take from what is considered as the malevolent creatures of the deep, evoked through Carating’s unique figurative approach applied with a tone of levity.
41
Lot 58 HERNANDO R. OCAMPO When Aries Became a Bull 1978 Acrylic on canvas 40 x 30 in (101.6 x 76.2 cm) PHP 3,000,000 - 4,000,000
For 20th century Philippine art, H.R. Ocampo is said to be the first to have evolved a homegrown abstraction, composed through interlocking shapes and varying tonalities. In this work, When Aries Became a Bull, the National Artist has used the strong palette of white, black, and red to evoke the subject matter alluded to in the title: the transformation of the god. While one may discern horns branching out in a variety of directions indicative of the god’s attribute, the work may also be appreciated as pure abstraction in its composition of jigsaw-like forms, resonant with the best examples that H.R. Ocampo painted in his lifetime.

43
Lot 59 ROMULO OLAZO Diaphanous Anthurium #40 (Catalogue No. 6493) 1997 Oil on canvas 40 x 40 in (101.6 x 101.6 cm) PHP 4,000,000 - 5,000,000
Considered as one of the most pivotal abstract artists of the second half of the 20th century, Romulo Olazo is primarily known for his Diaphanous and the Permutation series. Unbeknownst to some, he was also an accomplished figurative artist, and in this work we can see how his descriptive tendency has expressed a field of anthuriums as translucent evocation of overlapping forms, which suggest the plant’s heart-shaped spathes. Providing visual density to the work is the medley of abrupt arches, a flourish of spadices in which the flowers reside. Swaddled in a rich cobalt blue suggestive of sky, the diaphanous rendition of anthuriums has become one Olazo’s highly favored works.

46
Lot 60 FERNANDO ZOBEL Los Grajos VI 1964 Oil on canvas 31.5 x 31.5 in (80 x 80 cm) PHP 7,500,000 - 8,500,000
Los Grajos VI by Fernando Zobel is still very much in keeping with the visual ethos of his saeta series. But rather than floating in space, the filamentous strokes bristle against a field of expanding darkness—a square tight with alarm and premonition. They recall the feathery ends of the “grajo,” or the rook, which belongs to the family of crows. Near the center of the composition is a series of red dots forming a perforated line which offers an ellipse of stillness in the coruscating tumult. The painting is an iconic Zobel pulsing with a breathless, escalating intensity.

48
Lot 61 VICTORIO EDADES The Fisherman 1965 Oil on canvas 15.5 x 11.75 in (39.6 x 29.4 cm) PHP 800,000 - 1,200,000
Painted in 1965, The Fisherman by National Artist Victor Edades could very well provide the visual counterpart to the protagonist of Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea. Save for his wide-brim hat that casts a shadow to his weathered but still visibly handsome face, the figure holds no implement of his trade but is presented as someone who has been used to the vicissitudes of the sea with his quiet and smoldering presence. With his shoulders slightly tilted from the viewer, the fishermen seems to survey the water world that he has grown intimate with—a contemplation of a life lived with the bounties of the sea.
49
Lot 62 TELESFORO SUCGANG-FLORES Flores, Frutos y Mariposas Undated Oil on canvas 25.75 x 14 in (65.4 x 35.6 cm) PHP 1,200,000 - 1,500,000
Compared with Juan Luna and Felix Resurreccion-Hidalgo, Telesforo Alayon Sucgang (born in 1855 and died in 1916) did not achieve the same prominence as that of his contemporaries, but his body of work is being re-evaluated in a new light. His painting, Flores, Frutos, and y Mariposas (“Flowers, Fruits, and Butterflies”), attests to his profound mastery of the classical form. In this work, we see a still life suffused with lyrical brilliance, whose juxtaposition of fresh and decaying leaves—as well as the presence of butterflies—suggest the cycle of life. Meticulously painted, the details come alive in the viewer’s mind, as if the flora were true to touch. The sustained interest towards Sucgang’s works conveys that the master’s time has finally come.

52
Lot 63 ANITA MAGSAYSAY-HO The Needle Woman 1954 Egg tempera on wood 20 x 16 in (50.8 x 40.6 cm) PHP 2,000,000 - 3,000,000
Clear-eyed and possessing of a dignified stance, this portrait by Anita MagsaysayHo of a dressmaker is representative of a certain modernist bent, which uses color not primarily to describe the world but underscore the “paintingness of the work. Revealing the thread wound around her fingers, the figure lies almost symmetrically along the central axis of the canvas. From her shoulders we see the implements of her craft: a pair of scissors on one side, spools of thread on the other. It is painting with a searching, quiet presence, as alive as when Anita Magsaysay-Ho painted it decades ago.
53
54
Lot 64 JUAN LUNA Y NOVICIO Pensamientos Undated Oil on wood panel 14 x 18 in (35.5 x 45.7 cm) PHP 4,000,000 - 5,000,000
A still life is rare in the oeuvre of Juan Luna, who mostly painted narrative scenes and portraits. Hence, the appearance of this work adds to our appreciation of arguably the most important artist in Philippine history. The work, which bears the master’s famed chiaroscuro, features a swirl of pansies whose white blossoms are pure and pristine despite the encroaching decay that has assailed the other petals. Aside from the name of a flower, the Spanish word “pensamiento” means “thought,” and it’s not far-fetched to think of this work as a contemplation of a memento mori—a visual reminder of mortality. More than a century since it was painted, the work remains as a testament to the aphorism, ars longa, vita brevis: art is long, life short.
55
Lot 65 ROMEO TABUENA Procession 1991 Oil on canvas 32 x 39 in (81.3 x 99 cm) PHP 1,300,000 - 1,800,000
Dazzling and rhapsodic in composition, Procession is Romeo Tabuena’s take on this age-old tradition using his signature palette of bright colors and slightly cubist figuration. One can glean the latter more clearly on how shapes of varying tonalities compose the ground the figures walk on, bearing religious banners as well as sacks of harvest they will bequeath as offering. In the middle distance, a church with a simple yet elegant silhouette emerges. The sky is as eventful as the gathering of the crowd, with its scattering of blues, yellows, and pinks, offering a breathtaking background to the religious fervor and devotional attitude of one of Tabuena’s most unforgettable works.
56
57
Lot 66 FERNANDO AMORSOLO Bontoc Igorotes 1957 Oil on canvas 24 x 34.5 in (61 x 87.6 cm) PHP 5,500,000 - 6,500,000 In his breathtaking rendition of Banaue Rice Terraces, Fernando Amorsolo employed the hallmark qualities of his artistry—from the symphonic coloration to the inspired placement of details to his lush visual lexicon infusing an ordinary scene with an idyllic and lyrical resplendence. And, of course, there is the light which swaddles the whole scene with a rinsing brilliance, suggesting the clarity of an early morning. Already, three figures in the foreground are busy inspecting their harvest, but an Ifugao, his back turned to the viewer, is yet to be involved in the business of the everyday, surveying the scene in front of him with concentration, his right hand holding and resting upon a spear. Bontoc Igorotes is Amorsolo at his finest.
58
59
Lot 67 ANG KIUKOK Harvest 1988 Oil on canvas 39.5 x 13 in (100.3 x 33 cm) PHP 7,000,000 - 8,000,000
Urgent and powerful, Harvest by Ang Kiukok is a remarkable portrayal of a farmer without minimizing the difficulty of her labor. Clutching a share of palay stalks to her chest, the figure, rendered cubistically, appears to be in a prayerful mood, her face tiled upwards, as though in the act of thanking God for the generous bounty. The white and red of her dress contrast sharply with the blue of the background, setting off the weathered skin of her face, hands, and feet. Harvest is a moving testament of the National Artist to those who cultivate the land.
60
Lot 68 BENCAB Heredero 2009 Oil on canvas 30 x 20 in (76.2 x 50.8 cm) PHP 7,500,000 - 8,500,000
Wearing a Panama hat, a formal jacket over what appears to be a piña shirt or a camiso de chino (paired with pinstripe pants), a cigarette dangling on one hand and a cane balanced on another, this is BenCab’s depiction of the heredero—the gentlemanly inheritor of the family fortune. Looking at the middle distance, he reveals his square face and powerful jaw, not unlike that of Jose Rizal. His lips break into a thin smile, which suggests a reserved but visible levity. At his back is an expressive flourish of what seems to be a continuous stroke, giving an expressive character to an otherwise serious portrait. This is a man of quiet achievement who enjoys the small pleasures of life—as only BenCab could portray.

Lot 75 ANG KIUKOK Man on fire 1997 Oil on canvas 36 x 36 in (91.4 x 91.4 cm) PHP 9,000,000 - 12,000,000
In this coruscating work, Man on Fire, Ang Kiukok dramatizes some of the best qualities of his artistry—from the strong color palette to the almost geometric human form to the immediacy of the subject matter. Bearing a torch, the man is the fire-eater one sees in circuses and carnivals, spewing a conflagration from his mouth The National Artist takes the subject matter a notch higher by fusing the man and the fire together, with the latter appearing as a ramification of metallic leaves or sinuous swords emerging from the chest. In Ang Kiukok’s version, they are extensions of each other, united in that singular, intense moment of danger and magic.
67
Lot 76 MALANG Three Women 2006 Oil on canvas 14 x 17 in (35.6 x 43.2 cm) PHP 1,200,000 - 1,500,000
Her hair in a tight bun, with dots for eyes and a dash for a mouth, and garbed in traditional saya, the woman of Malang has become one of the most identifiable figures of Philippine visual arts. In this work, we see three of them, arrayed in a row, silently standing, set against an explosion of colors and shapes. While in Malang’s other works the women are shown as being involved in some chore or activity, here, they are absorbed in attentive waiting, facing the viewer head-on, as if returning his gaze. The painting is a characteristic Malang that magnetizes the eye and the heart.

Lot 81 ANG KIUKOK Pieta 1993 Oil on canvas 36 x 36 in (91.4 x 91.4 cm) PHP 7,000,000 - 8,000,000
One of the highest points of the Renaissance period, the pietà evokes the indelible portrait of Mother Mary cradling the deceased body of Christ. Centuries after, Ang Kiukok would deconstruct the subject matter by constricting Christ within a sliver of space, depicted through the prism of the National Artist’s brand of cubism. While absent, Mary is symbolized by the blue surrounding the folded frame of the Savior; she is, after all, notable in the history of art for her flowing ultramarine robe. A work of searing and agonizing beauty, this masterwork by Ang Kiukok renews the humanism of pietà as a hymn of divinity made palpable through flesh.

The iconic geometric abstraction of Arturo Luz extends to his sculptures, as evidenced by this work, Figure. Featuring a high red gloss—one of the National Artist’s preferred colors—the work highlights a series of zigzagging angular forms tempered by a full circle and halfcircles. Their juxtaposition generates visual tension as the form surges triumphantly upwards. True to the spirit of the master’s visual language, this work affirms how, in the hands of a master, a handful of shapes could be made symphonic.
