It earned the nickname “Great White” because of its all-white text, a trend that the Sea-Dweller line would continue for future models.

As a tribute to the Rolex Submariner’s 50th anniversary, Rolex produced the Ref. 16610 with a bright green bezel earning it the nickname “Kermit”. As the first Submariner to feature a Maxi dial, the Ref. 16610 was only in production for 7 years. This example features both an early “F” serial, which indicates that it was part of the first 3 years of its production, and a desirable “Flat 4” bezel in mint condition. Flat IV 9

This Rolex Explorer II Ref. 16550 is a transitional model produced at a time when Rolex was only just beginning to shift to more modern materials such as paint that resisted fading over time. Some of these transitional white dials aged to a gorgeous cream color, making these cream dial Ref. 16550 Explorers highly desirable to collectors. This particular example also features a “rail dial”, with the gap between the words “superlative” and “chronometer”, and “officially” and “certified” forming a parallel rail.

AUDEMARS PIGUET

In 2018 at the 29th Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH), in Geneva, Switzerland, amongst their esteemed peers, Audemars Piguet was making history. Still a prototype, they presented a watch then bearing the name “RD#2,” but better known by the concept it was proving: that the Swiss house, already famed for assembling some of the thinnest watches ever made, could manage the world’s thinnest self-winding perpetual calendar. Thin timepieces by themselves are already remarkable feats of engineering, commanding the most delicate manufacturing with the tightest tolerances. But solving the problem of a three-level perpetual calendar complication being re-engineered onto a single, slim level demands more than savoirfaire—it requires unprecedented technical prowess. A year later, Audermars Piguet unveiled the fruits of their labor: a concept no more, the RD#2 presents its production countenance with a name befitting its stature: the Royal Oak Selfwinding Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin.

13

A SVELTE SUCCESSION Performing miracles of engineering isn’t a skill developed overnight. The journey to the Royal Oak Selfwinding Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin is one dating back nearly a hundred years, when Audemars Piguet manufactured the thinnest pocket watch ever crafted in 1921, where calibre 17SVF#5’s movement measured a mere 1.32mm in thickness. The Manufacture continued its technological advancement through the decades, landing on significant horological achievements along the way, including model 5516 with the first perpetual calendar with a leap year indicator in 1955, and calibre 2120 in 1967, the thinnest self-winding movement of its time with a 2.45mm thickness and a product of Audemars Piguet’s focus on extra-thin mechanisms in a postwar era. But it was in 1986 when the Manufacture presented one of its crowning achievements. Caliber 2870 showed the world what the thinnest self-winding automatic tourbillon looked like. The movement kept its title of thinnest tourbillon for decades until it was unseated in 2018, when, as demonstrated in Geneva, Audemars Piguet was already in development of their next mechanical milestone. AN ULTRA-THIN UNDERTAKING To build a thin watch isn’t so much a matter of size, but a matter of space. With a thin watch, the clearance between components is next to nothing, meaning issues with alignment or motion within the confined mechanism could spell the end of the movement. Miniscule parts—of which the Royal Oak Selfwinding Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin has 256—must be manufactured even more precisely with no room for error. Were Audemars Piguet aiming to make a simple time-teller, its manufacture would be much more fundamental, but that is simply not good enough for this watch. As if being the thinnest self-winding perpetual calendar wasn’t enough, the number of the watch’s complications pushed the Manufacture to develop a number of innovations for this new caliber 5133, including two patented mechanisms: the end-of-the-month cam’s integration into the date wheel, and the month cam’s combination with the month wheel. This allowed the Royal Oak Selfwinding Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin to compress the entire movement to a mere 2.89mm thick while still presenting all its functions on its dial, including a moon phase, perpetual calendar with day, date, and month, as well as symmetric sub-dials for day/night and leap year indicators at the 8 and 4 o’clock positions respectively. Each dial is subtly sunk into the matte, brushed blue dial of the watch, improved from the original RD#2 to focus on utmost legibility. A self-winding mechanism beating at 2.75 hz with a 40-hour power reserve completes its specifications.

14

The thinnest movement also means that the Royal Oak Selfwinding Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin manages a remarkably slight and subtle case, presenting with its signature octagon design at 41mm from the front and an unprecedented and elegant 6.3mm from the side. Combined with a titanium case and 950 platinum bezel and center links on the bracelet, the watch is every bit the bold Audemars Piguet Royal Oak while wearing light on the wrist thanks to all its technical accouterments.

FIRST OF ITS NAME When building the RD#2, Audemars Piguet set out to make a horological masterpiece. With the Royal Oak Selfwinding Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin, once again, they’ve made history. We are beyond delighted to present a brand new example for auction, which to our knowlede, is the first time in the world this reference will be available for bids.

PATEK PHILIPPE NAUTILUS TIFFANY DIAL The partnership between Patek Philippe and Tiffany & Co. spans nearly two centuries dating back to 1851, when Antoine Norbert de Patek and Charles Tiffany met in New York over dinner. They signed an agreement making Tiffany & Co. the first retailer in America to carry Patek Philippe watches – a collaboration that continues to this day with Patek Philippe currently being the only watchmaker to feature the Tiffany & Co. brand on the dials of a select few. While Tiffany & Co. has never revealed how many Patek Philippe dials it has stamped or how many they have sold, Patek Philippe timepieces with the Tiffany & Co. mark are widely considered to be among the rarest in production. Timepieces from the Patek Philippe Nautilus line – one of the most iconic in the industry – are notoriously difficult to obtain. Yet, as difficult as they are to acquire, Patek Philippe models bearing the Tiffany & Co. stamp are even harder to come by, with the extremely limited examples often reserved for a few choice clients. Unsurprisingly, these Nautilus watches have achieved record-breaking sales during the times they have appeared at auction.

24

25

The Patek Philippe Moon Phase Ref. 5712 was introduced in 2006 alongside several other models to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Nautilus collection. A year prior, Patek Philippe had released the Ref. 3712/1A, which was the most complicated Nautilus at the time. In production for only 12 months, this reference served as the blueprint for its successor, which would improve on it in several ways. While staying true to the design cues of the original Nautilus Ref. 3700 and Ref. 3712, the Patek Philippe Nautilus Ref. 5712 feature a date and moon phase indicator alongside a running seconds sub-dial at four o’clock, with a power reserve indicator at ten o’clock. It is powered by the Patek Philippe automatic caliber 240 PS IRM C LU, where the acronyms highlight the complications. They stand for “petites seconds” (small seconds), “indication de réserve de marche” (power reserve), “calendrier” (date), and “lune” (moon). It incorporates several of Patek Philippe’s horological innovations such as the four-spoke Gyromax balance wheel, and the Spiromax balance spring that maintains its 21,600 vph oscillations.

32 PATEK PHILIPPE AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE AND DESIRABLE NAUTILUS MOON PHASE TIFFANY DIAL REF. 5712G CIRCA 2017 This extremely special version of the Patek Philippe Ref. 5712G is encased in 18k white gold, subtly bearing the highly-desirable Tiffany & Co. mark below the two sub-dials. While the Patek Philippe Ref. 5712G is already highly-regarded as one of Patek Philippe’s most beloved models, its Tiffany marking adds not only a significant premium to its value, but an unquestionable enhancement to its exclusivity as well.

The Rolex Daytona Ref. 16520 represents an important evolutionary leap in the Daytona line history as the first to use the Rolex Caliber 4030 movement based on the Zenith El Primero. More than just the change in movement, the case size was also increased from 37mm to 40mm, keeping it in line with the rest of Rolex’s professional range, and adding more presence on the wrist. This example features an exceedingly rare A-series serial, making it one of the last examples to be produced.

PHP 2,800,000 – 3,100,000 The “Sigma” dial found in this Daytona reference 6265 example refers to the small, round marks located on the sides of the “Swiss” text at the very bottom of the timepiece. These markings are the lowercase Greek letter “sigma” indicating that the indices were crafted from solid gold. Sigma dials started to appear on Rolex watches in 1972, and were phased out towards the end of the decade.

This incredibly well-preserved Rolex Daytona 6263 features a Mk.1 dial, belonging to the firstgeneration production of this highly desirable chronograph. The Ref. 6263 is the last version of the Daytona featuring the manual-winding Valjoux movement, and its Mk.1 dial, predating any “Daytona” text is highly valued by collectors.

60

ROLEX DAYTONA REF. 6262

Considered by many enthusiasts to be one of the most desirable lines of watches in modern timepiece collecting, the Rolex “Paul Newman Daytona has achieved an unprecedented following in recent years. Made famous by actor, racecar driver and philanthropist Paul Newman, the Paul Newman Daytona radiates much of the mystique and charisma that he was well known for. The recent sale of the original Rolex Daytona reference 6239 worn by Paul Newman himself still holds the record as the most expensive wristwatch ever sold at auction and is being hailed by many as the most important vintage watch in the world. 61

What is a Paul Newman Daytona? While a Paul Newman Daytona can share the reference numbers 6239, 6241, 6262, 6263, 6264 and 6265 with a non-Paul Newman Daytona, there are some distinct features that differentiate it from the regular line. There are no technical differences between a Paul Newman Daytona and the regular Rolex Cosmograph Daytona sold in the 60s through to the 80s. The Paul Newman Daytona is instead defined by a special dial configuration, sometimes called an “exotic” dial. The Paul Newman Daytona dials are usually two or three-toned and feature an art deco style font for the numerals on the sub-dials, and a small square at the end of the hash marks. There is also a small step in the dial between the (sometimes red) outer minute tracker and the center of the dial. As is usually the case with vintage Rolex watches, the Paul Newman Daytona’s stratospheric rise to popularity didn’t happen overnight. When Rolex started producing Daytonas with the exotic dials in

62

the 60s, they were largely ignored by Rolex clients, as they preferred the traditional Daytona dials over the more unconventional multi-colored “exotic” dials. Since these versions sold poorly at the time compared to the regular Daytona models, Rolex produced them at an extremely limited quantity. It’s estimated that for every twenty Daytonas Rolex would produce, only one featuring the special dial were made, making them significantly rarer than their counterparts. A combination of this scarcity in the market, style trends evolving through the years with panda dials becoming aesthetically desirable, and Paul Newman’s affinity towards these watches throughout the span of his career, have steadily contributed to making the once slow seller into the record-breaking phenomenon it is today.

95 ROLEX AN IMPORTANT AND EXTREMELY RARE COSMOGRAPH DAYTONA “PAUL NEWMAN” REF. 6262, SERIAL NO. 2624xxx, CIRCA 1970 Movement: Mechanical, hand-winding Valjoux cal. 727 Dial: White tri-color “Panda” dial with applied luminescent hour markers and steel hands, central chronograph hand, white minute track, three black sub-dials indicating seconds, minutes, hours Case: Stainless steel, tachymeter bezel, 37mm Bracelet: Stainless steel Rolex bracelet with folding clasp

The Rolex Daytona reference 6262 was produced for only a year in 1970 and is considered to be a transitional model used to test certain new features that Rolex would add to the line. Because of its transitional state, the reference 6262 was produced in very small quantities and within this batch, even fewer would feature the exotic panda dial seen on this example, making it one of the rarest of the Paul Newman Daytonas.

This fine example of Patek Philippe’s 18-karat rose gold Ref. 5070R is an extremely elegant representation of the scarce and highly coveted chronograph. Only an estimated 1,000 pieces of this rose gold variant are thought to exist throughout its production run from 1998 to 2009. At its heart lies a reworked Nouvelle LÊmania movement, housed in an elegant 42mm case - making it one of the largest Patek Philippe has ever offered.

65

Patek Philippe has long been celebrated for their annual calendar complication which they invented and patented in 1996, so it’s extremely fitting that this very special timepiece – the Patek Philippe Nautilus Annual Calendar Ref. 5726 - is adorned with the equally special Tiffany & Co. stamp on its dial, elevating its value even further. The annual calendar mechanism displays the day and month in two in-line apertures at 12 o’clock, and the date in an aperture at six o’clock. Directly above is a 24-hour day-night indicator encircling a moon phase display which requires correction once every 122 years. Powering the Ref. 5726 is Patek Philippe’s self-winding Caliber 324 S QA LU 24H/303 with a 21k gold rotor, a 28,800 vph oscillating frequency, and a 45-hour power reserve. The entire movement is visible through the display case back, where you’ll also see the distinguished Patek Philippe seal of approval.

66

Staying true to the Nautilus line, the Patek Philippe Ref. 5726 maintains all the design aspects of the original Nautilus, including its robust, porthole-inspired stainless steel case, marking the first time ever that Patek Philippe would offer its annual calendar complication in a steel watch. The Patek Philippe Nautilus Ref. 5726 seamlessly blends the timeless style of the Nautilus with Patek Philippe’s legacy in crafting mechanical complications. This particular example goes one step further by celebrating the esteemed partnership between Patek Philippe and Tiffany & Co., elevating this already difficult-to-obtain timepiece to incredible levels of exclusivity. 67

98 PATEK PHILIPPE AN EXTREMELY RARE AND COLLECTIBLE NAUTILUS CHRONOGRAPH “GENEVA SEAL” REF. 5980/1A-001, CIRCA 2009 Movement: Automatic, self-winding chronograph Dial: Blue dial with applied white gold luminous hands and baton hour markers, aperture indicating date, sub-dial with red hand indicating hours, minutes, central chronograph hand Case: Stainless steel, display case back, 44mm Bracelet: Stainless steel with folding clasp Accompanied by presentation box and Archive papers.

68

The Geneva Seal, or Poinçon de Genève, was created in 1886 by the Canton of Geneva to protect the reputation of the Geneva watchmaking guild. It established several technical criteria for the quality of movements manufactured in the canton. Timepieces that pass the quality requirements are stamped with the Geneva hallmark. Since 2009, Patek Philippe has stopped submitting their movements for inspection by the Geneva Seal Bureau, instead affixing its own Patek Philippe seal on their timepieces. The Patek Philippe Ref. 5980 stands on its own as one of the most desirable models in the Nautilus line, but examples with the Geneva seal are even more sought-after.

Yet only a small batch from its early production bears an “Explorer” or “3-6-9” dial, named after the Rolex Explorer with a similar dial configuration. The Rolex Submariner Ref. 5513 was the last Submariner to feature the “3-69” dial, and examples of this series are considered to be among some of the rarest Rolex sports watches. Highly uncommon even in international auctions, the Ref. 5513 Submariner with an Explorer dial is a wonderful nod to an iconic 50s design.

The Rolex Submariner continues to be one of Rolex’s most popular models, with early generation examples lacking the crown guard we see in today’s models. Rolex gradually introduced crown guards in the mid-60s to enhance the model’s durability, but early models lacking this feature are considerably valuable to collectors. Manufactured between 1958 and 1962, the Rolex Submariner Ref. 5508 nicknamed “Small Crown” or “James Bond” due to its close relationship to the films, was the last in the line to carry a 100-meter depth rating and the last reference to have no crown guards. This particular example impresses with an excellently-preserved tropical black dial with gilt printings, and a wonderfully faded ghost bezel.

WATCH GLOSSARY

Automatic: A mechanical watch that is powered by the motion of the wearer’s wrist instead of manually twisting the crown.

Balance Wheel: A weighted wheel that oscillates at a constant rate which allows the hands to move via the watch’s gears.

Balance Spring: Also called a hairspring, it is connected to the balance wheel and regulates the rate at which a balance wheel oscillates. Bezel: The ring that surrounds the watch crystal, usually made from metal or ceramic.

Caliber: Another word for movement, it is mostly used when a manufacturer denotes a specific movement number or model. Case Back: The back side of a watch case that can be removed to access the inside of the watch. Chronograph: A type of watch that features an additional stopwatch function in addition to the main time. Complication: Additional functions of a watch besides telling the time. Examples are chronographs, calendars, or moonphases. Crown: A small knob on the side of the watch case which can be used to either adjust the time and date or, in the case of hand-wind movements, wind the watch to keep it running. Crystal: A clear protective cover for the dial, made from either synthetic sapphire, acrylic or glass.

Deployant Clasp: A type of watch strap buckle that closes by folding in on itself, then clasping. Dial: Or watch face, the dial displays the watch functions.

Exhibition Case Back: Also called an “open” or “display” case back, this is a transparent cover on the back side of a watch case, usually made from sapphire, glass, or acrylic, that allows you to view the inner workings of the movement.

Frequency: The speed at which a watch beats, measured in either vibrations per hour (vph) or hertz. The higher the vph, the “smoother” the second hand appears to sweep across the dial. Flyback Chronograph: A type of chronograph that can be reset without stopping the chronograph function. This function is used for when multiple times need to be recorded in quick succession.

GMT: A watch with a GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) function has the ability to track two time zones at once, often with an extra GMT hand for the “home” time. Guilloche: An engraved ornamental pattern, often used on watch dials, comprised of intricately intertwined lines.

Hacking Seconds: This function in a movement allows the user to stop the seconds hand when the crown is pulled out. This makes it easier to synchronize a watch with another timepiece.

93

WATCH GLOSSARY

Hand-wound: This refers to mechanical watches that don’t automatically wind through wrist movement and need to be powered by manually turning the crown to wind up the mainspring. Horology: The art and/or science of measuring time.

Indices: Or “index hour markers”, they are markings on the dial of a watch used to represent the hours in place of numerals. In higher-end watches, these are usually “applied,” or attached to the dial, rather than printed on.

Jewels: Synthetic rubies or sapphires used as bearings at the heaviest points of wear in a watch movement to reduce friction between moving parts

Lugs: Pieces of metal that protrude at the top and bottom of a watch case where the strap is attached. The two ends of the lug hold a spring bar, where the strap is fastened. Luminescence: Also called “lume,” luminescence is the glow given off by watch numerals, indices and hands that have been coated with a photoluminescent material that allows them to be seen in the dark.

Mainspring: A torsion spring that stores the energy of a watch by becoming tightened when a watch is wound. The energy created by the spring unwinding is what powers the watch.

Movement: The “heart” or mechanism of a watch that can be either mechanical (automatic or hand-wound) or quartz (battery powered). Most watch

94

manufacturers refer to their movements as “calibers.”

Power Reserve: The length of time that a mechanical watch can run after it’s been fully wound. Pusher: A button on a chronograph watch that starts, stops and/or resets its stopwatch function.

Quartz: A quartz movement is powered by a battery. The battery sends an electric signal via a microchip circuit to a small quartz crystal that then vibrates at a precise rate. Those vibrations regulate a stepper motor that moves the watch hands.

Retrograde: An indicator on a watch dial that is shaped as part of a circle instead of a full circle. When the indicator hits the end of its cycle, it resets back to the zero position by moving backward.

Skeleton: A transparent or partially cut-out dial that allows the movement to be viewed from the front of the watch. Small Seconds: A small sub-dial that displays the seconds.

World timer: A watch with a dial that can be adjusted to show the time in 24 different time zones represented by 24 major cities across the globe.
