Few watches make as bold a statement as a Richard Mille, and even fewer have the performance and features to stand behind it. Among a collection of truly exotic timepieces, the limited edition 030 NTPT (North Thin Ply Technology) Asia Exclusive stands out even more. A unique movement paired with the RM 030’s Formula 1-inspired engineering and construction result in a truly impressive timepiece. The RM 030 first greets you with its bold, curved 50mm case, accentuated with 12 spline screws around the textured NTPT carbon bezel. This carbon is special—originally developed for racing yacht sails, the extremely thin carbon filaments are woven with resin in a pattern to create the wavy, wood-grain design seen on this RM 030’s case. With this smaller, denser weave, the pattern inherently comes with much more durable properties that make it ideal as a case material. A screw-down crown sits at the 3 o’clock position with a circular skeletonized design and the same NTPT carbon markings as the case. The see-through skeletonized dial design gives a glimpse into the watch’s movement, highlighted by three main dial features: the date window at 7 o’clock, the power reserve (up to 50 hours) at 9 o’clock, and the winding phase indicator at 12 o’clock.

14

19 RICHARD MILLE The RM 030’s Swiss-made RMAR1 automatic movement features a unique declutching rotor system which allows the winding barrel to disconnect from the winding mechanism when the spring is fully wound. This allows both the movement and oscillator to continuously work with the best ratio of constant torque and power, giving the complication increased accuracy and performance over time compared to its traditionally-wound peers. The gear system declutches the rotor automatically when the power hits the maximum reserve of 50 hours, and clutches again when the reserve decreases to 40 hours. The user is notified of each of these phases through the ON/OFF winding phase indicator that sits below 12 o’clock. Source: www.richardmille.com

The Rolex Daytona Ref. 16520 represents an important evolutionary leap in the Daytona line history as the first to use the Rolex Caliber 4030 movement based on the Zenith El Primero. More than just the change in movement, the case size was also increased from 37mm to 40mm, keeping it in line with the rest of Rolex’s professional range, and adding more presence on the wrist. While the Ref. 16520 may be the first to use the Rolex Caliber 4030, this piece features an exceedingly rare A-series serial, which makes it one of the last examples to be produced.

Already considered to be highly-collectible, the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona Ref. 16520 was the last of the Daytona line to house the Zenith-based movement before moving on to Rolex’s own in-house caliber 4130. Making this particular piece more special is what has become known as a “Patrizzi” dial. An organic varnish called Zapon was used by Rolex to protect the faces of all black dial Ref. 16520 Daytonas made between 1994 and 1995. Unknown at the time, the varnish failed to protect some models, and the silver outer track of the chronograph counters later discolored and turned brown over time with exposure to UV rays. This anomaly was discovered in 2005 by an Italian auctioneer named Osvaldo Patrizzi while selling a collection of Rolex timepieces. Each individual watch has its own character undergoing its own ageing process, and resulting in unique pieces. 19

The rare Rolex Cosmograph Daytona Ref. 6240 is incredibly important for its role in Rolex Daytona history. To boost the sales of their chronograph, Rolex gave their Daytona screwdown chronograph pushers, which greatly improved their water resistance. The Ref. 6240 Daytona was the first Daytona model to undergo this change, earning the “Oyster” marking on the dial to signify the increased water resistance. As the Ref. 6240 Daytonas are considered “prototypes”, they had a limited production from roughly 1965 to 1969. Their rare Mark 0 and Mark 1 pushers are highly valuable and prized by collectors. This example features Mark 0 pushers, the first batch of screw-down pushers put on a Daytona .

ROLEX

DAYTONA PAUL NEWMAN REF. 6239

When you think of Paul Newman, you might remember the Holywood legend, the passionate racecar driver, or the prolific philanthropist. At the intersection of fame, fortune, motoring, and elite collectability lies the Rolex Daytona. More than a nod to the watch house’s affiliation with the sport of motoring, on a fateful day in the 60s an “exotic dial” reference 6239 Rolex Daytona was given to Paul Newman as a gift by his wife, Joanne Woodward. On the watch’s case back were inscribed the words “DRIVE CAREFULLY ME,” and it would be inextricably tied to the movie star for the rest of his career. A Face Fit for the Limelight In an interesting twist of fate, the original Rolex Cosmograph Daytona Reference 6239 had a rocky beginning, and one that didn’t see many sales for the brand. This was the time before Rolex manufactured everything in-house, and part of the lineup of the original 6239s included so-called “exotic” dials made by Singer that experimented with designs and colors that set them apart from the more traditional base designs. That all changed when one particular exotic dial—now called the Paul Newman Panda—ended up as a gift to the iconic star. He had fallen in love with motorcar racing during the filming of Winning, so the Rolex Daytona couldn’t be more apt. Featured on his wrist for his many photographs, races, and public appearances, the reference 6239 with its exotic face was thrust inexorably into the limelight. In many ways, the watch was a perfect fit for Paul Newman. Not only for its motoring-focused complications, but also for its stunning 60’s design and details. This is immediately apparent in

the 6239’s sub-dials, the foremost difference with the reference’s traditional dial. Rather than the slim typeface more in line with the rest of the dial branding and bezel markings, the exotic dial made use art deco numerals, and terminated its markers with square accents. Further differences included a crosshair design on each sub-dial, 15-second markers on the seconds sub-dial rather than the traditional 20-second markers, and contrasting red details on the dial’s outer ring and “DAYTONA” branding above the 6 o’clock register. Built for the Track and Beyond The Paul Newman 6239 (originally announced as the “Le Mans”) is powered by the Rolex Valjoux 722 calibre. Indistinguishable from its 72B predecessor, the 722 nevertheless makes small variations and improvements while retaining the original movement’s core mechanisms. This includes the introduction of the Rolex Microstella adjustable-inertia balance wheel, defined by a pair of screws on the rim of the balance wheel which enable the inertia adjustment by working on the frequency without the need of a regulator. An improved Breguet overcoil hairspring also makes an appearance to distinguish itself from previous movements, a spring that maintains concentric poise during its “breathing” expansion and contraction. The manual-wind movement beats at 18,000 vibrations per hour, comes with 17 jewels, and has a power reserve of 48 hours. Pump

pushers navigate its chronograph complications, flanking the stainless steel bezel where the tachymeter scale sits. Introduced in 1963, which would go on to be a breakthrough year for Rolex, the “Cosmograph” also featured a tachymeter scale on its bezel for the first ever on a Rolex, establishing the look of the chronograph for decades to come. The Holy Grail We are delighted to present a pristine Paul Newman Panda Rolex Daytona Cosmograph Reference 6239 for auction. This is one of the few times an impeccable piece such as this will be available, and in such condition over 50 years since its manufacture. This example has been kept in a private collection for many years, ageing well with its exceptional maintenance. It showcases full lugs, and crisp satin finishes. The lug-holes maintain their distance from the edges of the 6239’s case, indicative of the watch’s original condition. Its dial remains clean, unmarred, and as handsome as its original release.

Originally issued to German fighter pilots in the 1960s and 70s, the Huer Bundeswehr is one of the few true military watches with a legitimate complication. The dial of this example features an encircled “3H” stamped on the dial, which is an abbreviation for hydrogen-3, a luminous material otherwise known as tritium. The Heuer Bundeswehr paved the way for many German watch brands to follow, such as Sinn’s 156, which is its direct successor.

The Rolex Explorer Ref. 1016 is one of Rolex’s most iconic tool watches. As with the Submariner and GMT-Master, the Rolex Explorer was designed for a specific task: extra reliability and legibility under the harshest of conditions. A Ref. 1016 in good condition has been increasingly hard to find, with more collectors realizing its true value and worth; but this example in particular features an exceedingly rare tropical gilt dial, making it a true collector’s piece. This timepiecre comes with a guarantee reflecting date of sale of October 1967 purchased from the US Navy Exchange in Subic Bay, Philippines, as well as a chronometer paper dated January 1967.

iamonds are known as symbols of rarity, beauty, and eternal love. These precious gemstones are highly coveted and adorn various

types of jewelry.

Traditionally mined, diamonds form and crystalize under the earth. Over the

years, technology has developed allowing for the cultivation of diamonds in an alternative manner. Cultured diamonds, also known as lab grown or non-

mined diamonds, are grown in highly controlled laboratory environments

using advanced technology to mimic nature’s conditions for diamond formation. Some liken this process to flowers cultivated in a greenhouse.

Today, cultured diamonds are recognized as having the same characteristics, chemical composition, physical properties, and structure as diamonds found

in nature. Considered diamonds, they are not the same as cubic zirconia and moissanite which are simulants that may look like diamonds but have different characteristics.

Twelve lots of cultured diamond jewelry are offered in this sale.

In the 1920s during the height of the Art Deco movement, Vacheron Constantin produced a small number of eccentric watches unique to the North American market, with pillowshaped cases and the movement turned 45-degrees so that the winding crown sat at the top corner of the case. This was meant to make it easier to read the time without having to move one’s arm. The Vacheron Constantin Historiques American 1921 pays tribute to the watches of that era, with a 40mm rose gold case adding a dash of modern elegance.

PHP 2,300,000 – 2, 500,000 The Patek Philippe Ref. 3710 holds a special footnote in Nautilus history. Since its introduction in 1976, the Nautilus was a simple time-and-date watch, with two or three hands for the time, and a date window. When the Nautilus Ref. 3710 was introduced in 1998, Patek Philippe added a winding zone indicator resembling a comet and its tail, which specifies the best time to manually wind the watch to keep time as accurately as possible. This was the first time Patek Philippe added a complication to the Nautilus line, which would later open the gates to more complications to models in the future.

61

62

1996 was an important year for Patek Philippe. Besides marking the Nautilus’ 30th Anniversary, it was also the year the entire Nautilus lineup was reintroduced, and with it, the Patek Philippe Ref. 5980 Nautilus Chronograph. This watch is exceptionally preserved-unpolished and comes complete with its original accessories, including its Certificate of Origin, leather wallet, presentation box, and other accompanying papers. At a time when it was considered common, co-branding brought together the notable partnership between Rolex and jeweler Tiffany & Co. All Rolex watches retailed by the jeweler were branded Tiffany & Co. on the dial until the end of the partnership. Due to their limited availability and with co-branding with watch brands becoming exceedingly rare today, Rolex watches with Tiffany & Co. stamped on the dial have become important and highly prized pieces among collectors.

In 1987, the manual wind Valjoux-based Rolex Daytona was on its way out to be replaced by the highly-anticipated Zenith-based automatic movement. This transition series from the last of the references 6265 and 6263, the first of the ref. 16520 share a serial number beginning with “R”. This R-Series ref. 16520 is exceptionally rare as it marks one of the first models out of production to feature the new Zenith-based 4030 automatic movement. As such, it bears the Mark 1 dial with the floating “Cosmograph” text, which was in production for only a year. The dial also features an “inverted 6” or upside-down “6” at the hour totalizer . This example is extra special since it comes in full set with its presentation box, service receipts, certificate and original tags. It is also in pristine condition.

The horological importance of the Rolex GMT-Master Ref. 6542 cannot be understated. Introduced in 1954 and produced until 1959, the Ref. 6542 paved the way for an entirely new category of wristwatches as Rolex’s very first dual time zone timepiece, the GMT-Master. Made specifically for commercial airline pilots, the GMT-Master allowed pilots to keep track of two time zones (local and home) simultaneously. This example features a beautifully preserved tropical dial, with its original bakelite bezel insert intact. Its brief production period, extreme rarity, iconic stature, all-original condition, and desirable tropical dial makes this example a significant addition to any collection.

Its 300-meter water resistance is achieved through a unique tripartite case design using torque screws that can be individually tensioned with high accuracy. Each lug is made of grade 5 titanium, with the rubber strap screwed down for greater security. The bezel is constructed from three layers connected by 22 screws, making it impossible to dislocate or loosen. The in-house movement allows the rewinding of the mainspring to be adapted to the user’s activity level within sports or leisure environments by adjusting the six positional setting of the rib’s placement. All-in-all, the Richard Mille RM 028 represents an almost unparalleled feat of horological engineering, cementing its position as one of the more important diver’s watches of this generation. WATCH GLOSSARY

Automatic: A mechanical watch that is powered by the motion of the wearer’s wrist instead of manually twisting the crown.

Balance Wheel: A weighted wheel that oscillates at a constant rate which allows the hands to move via the watch’s gears.

Balance Spring: Also called a hairspring, it is connected to the balance wheel and regulates the rate at which a balance wheel oscillates. Bezel: The ring that surrounds the watch crystal, usually made from metal or ceramic.

Caliber: Another word for movement, it is mostly used when a manufacturer denotes a specific movement number or model. Case Back: The back side of a watch case that can be removed to access the inside of the watch. Chronograph: A type of watch that features an additional stopwatch function in addition to the main time. Complication: Additional functions of a watch besides telling the time. Examples are chronographs, calendars, or moonphases. Crown: A small knob on the side of the watch case which can be used to either adjust the time and date or, in the case of hand-wind movements, wind the watch to keep it running. Crystal: A clear protective cover for the dial, made from either synthetic sapphire, acrylic or glass.

100

Deployant Clasp: A type of watch strap buckle that closes by folding in on itself, then clasping. Dial: Or watch face, the dial displays the watch functions.

Exhibition Case Back: Also called an “open” or “display” case back, this is a transparent cover on the back side of a watch case, usually made from sapphire, glass, or acrylic, that allows you to view the inner workings of the movement.

Frequency: The speed at which a watch beats, measured in either vibrations per hour (vph) or hertz. The higher the vph, the “smoother” the second hand appears to sweep across the dial. Flyback Chronograph: A type of chronograph that can be reset without stopping the chronograph function. This function is used for when multiple times need to be recorded in quick succession.

GMT: A watch with a GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) function has the ability to track two time zones at once, often with an extra GMT hand for the “home” time. Guilloche: An engraved ornamental pattern, often used on watch dials, comprised of intricately intertwined lines.

Hacking Seconds: This function in a movement allows the user to stop the seconds hand when the crown is pulled out. This makes it easier to synchronize a watch with another timepiece.

Hand-wound: This refers to mechanical watches that don’t automatically wind through wrist movement and need to be powered by manually turning the crown to wind up the mainspring.

Movement: The “heart” or mechanism of a watch that can be either mechanical (automatic or hand-wound) or quartz (battery powered). Most watch manufacturers refer to their movements as “calibers.”

Horology: The art and/or science of measuring time.

Indices: Or “index hour markers”, they are markings on the dial of a watch used to represent the hours in place of numerals. In higher-end watches, these are usually “applied,” or attached to the dial, rather than printed on.

Jewels: Synthetic rubies or sapphires used as bearings at the heaviest points of wear in a watch movement to reduce friction between moving parts

Lugs: Pieces of metal that protrude at the top and bottom of a watch case where the strap is attached. The two ends of the lug hold a spring bar, where the strap is fastened. Luminescence: Also called “lume,” luminescence is the glow given off by watch numerals, indices and hands that have been coated with a photoluminescent material that allows them to be seen in the dark.

Mainspring: A torsion spring that stores the energy of a watch by becoming tightened when a watch is wound. The energy created by the spring unwinding is what powers the watch.

Power Reserve: The length of time that a mechanical watch can run after it’s been fully wound. Pusher: A button on a chronograph watch that starts, stops and/or resets its stopwatch function.

Quartz: A quartz movement is powered by a battery. The battery sends an electric signal via a microchip circuit to a small quartz crystal that then vibrates at a precise rate. Those vibrations regulate a stepper motor that moves the watch hands.

Retrograde: An indicator on a watch dial that is shaped as part of a circle instead of a full circle. When the indicator hits the end of its cycle, it resets back to the zero position by moving backward.

Skeleton: A transparent or partially cut-out dial that allows the movement to be viewed from the front of the watch. Small Seconds: A small sub-dial that displays the seconds.

World timer: A watch with a dial that can be adjusted to show the time in 24 different time zones represented by 24 major cities across the globe.
