A Dream Filled With Sunshine Edited by Children’s Literature Committee of China Writers’ Association Consultant Bo Jin Chief Editor Hongbo Gao

Dreams-stealing Goblin slept during the day. At night, he went from door to door looking for dreams for his dinner, accompanied by a song he was humming and a big sack on his back.

2

3

A few years ago, it was quite easy for Goblin to find sweet dreams. Things changed recently, however. Late at night, the entire city smelled bad - it was the smell of a nightmare coming from every window of the residents. 4

5

One day, Goblin was too hungry to stand it another moment. He wanted to find a sweet dream to satisfy his appetite. He then started his journey for food, with the big sack on his back. 6

7

It happened to be a summer night, so windows of each house were wide open. He entered one house after another very easily. 8

9

He kept gasping because of the pain. Holding back his tears, Goblin fixed his gazes and found that something was shining with showy brilliance.

Goblin carefully started eating a dream, as if he were biting a hot but sweet Chinese soup dumpling. Even though he was cautious, he got hurt so seriously in his teeth that one of his front teeth shot off. 10

11

“Pooh! It turned out to be gold! Gold was useless to Goblin. Being angry over the lost front tooth, Goblin threw the half-eaten gold dream into his sack rudely.

12

13

For the whole night, Goblin’s teeth were all chipped away. What could he do? There were simply too many people who dreamed about gold.

14

15

Goblin flew toward the suburb dully when he entered a forest without intention. There stood a log cabin in deep woods. In the dim moonlight, the cabin gave off a mild fragrance of jasmine. 16

17

Goblin sniffed around like anything with his extremely sensitive nose. Aha! It was a sweet dream! 18

19

He rushed in from the open window and swallowed down the sweet dream neat and quick.

20

21

It had been almost a year since Goblin had such a yummy dream last time. He was actually beginning to regret having swallowed the dream so quickly before savoring its taste.

22

23

When he finished eating the dream and jumped out from the window, Goblin heard a very low sob, “Mom, I saw sunshine in my dream! I saw sunshine! But, but … it was gone too soon!” It was a little girl who was sobbing. 24

25

Goblin saw a face even glossier than the moonlight, with tear drops much more crystal than dew. Her long hair was darker than night; her lips were more delicate than a rose. Her eyes were closed like fused petals. She was blind! 26

27

Mother embraced the little girl and soothed her in a soft tone, “It’s all right, baby! Dreams will not be gone, and they will come back soon: the Sunshine, the Oceans, the Stars and the Moon… …” The little girl cheered up again, “Is it true, Mom? I also want to dream about forests, mountains and birds …” 28

29

Goblin suddenly became depressed, and his steps became even heavier than when he came. 30

31

Before, all Goblin cared about was sleeping, eating dreams and then sleeping again. Nothing else. Today, for the first time, he felt that some dreams should not be stolen for meals. 32

33

The sack full of gold was heavy, jingling inside. Goblin felt tired after a short walk and sat down under a big tree, asleep.

34

35

Goblin never dreamed before for he had not a care in the world. But now, he got something on his mind, and this brought him an unexpected dream for the first time in his life. What did he dream about? He dreamed that all the gold coins in the sack changed into glowing sunshine! 36

37

He felt on top of the world. He got so excited that he woke up. He found that the sack became swollen as if it had been full of air.

38

39

He opened the sack with an uneasy heart. Wow! A sack full of glowing sunshine! The gold coins had changed into sunshine! 40

41

He quickly fastened the top of the sack for fear that any ray of sunshine would leak. 42

43

At night, when the little girl was asleep, Goblin opened the sack and poured all the sunshine into the little girl’s dream. Soon he heard the little girl talk happily in her dream, “Ah! Sunshine! I see the Sunshine!”
