Excerpt Dad gets up, approaches a man, greets him. The man also gets up and start talking in a low voice, while the day is expanding slowly over the desert. They speak and look far away, at the horizon, at the road there, somewhere, that sometimes depending on the wind or light you can see in a glimpse. "Can you see it?” He says to me from time to time. “Can you you see, Salìm, over there, that thin strip like the tail of a serpent? It is our way.” I nod, yes, of course I see it, I say, but I cannot not really see anything. I only see the sand, like a sea, a sea of sand that stretches over more sand. But I nod because it's what I want to see, that road, and I know that it is what he wants dad too.
