I Want to Be a Tree (Picture Book)
Synopsis Leo is sick, locked in the room of a children's hospital. The doctor who is treating him teaches him to think of himself as a great tree, which in Fall weakens and loses its leaves but in Spring gets strong and vigorous again and can fight the bad weeds setting up the lawn. Leo wants to be like that tree and wants to win the bad disease afflicting him. So he decides to draw a tree for himself and for other children in the hospital. He also draws a bad giant planting weeds. And every day all the children in the hospital play a game: the winner is who blows the loudest rasperry to the bad giant. When Leo leaves the hospital his drawings are kept there, for all children who will live in that room after him.
Excerpt “I want to be like the tree in the children's garden, Giacomo.” “Really, Leo? Why?””Because it’s big and would remain clinging to the earth even if the weeds would hurt him. In the children's garden the tree is the only one to resist. He is the strongest, because the long roots us make him remain attached to the land. I want to stay connected to the earth, where there are mom, dad and my cousin Lucia.”
