America’s Retirement Future by Jeffrey Lewis
(NAPS)—Theft or embezzlement? That was the debate between Senators Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D-NY) and John Heinz (R-PA) in 1990, when they discussed how best to protect the growing Social Security Trust Fund reserves. Both agreed that failure to account properly for the huge pool of savings would constitute a political crime but differed on its nature. Moynihan likened it to common thievery; Heinz to a graver offense. He contended it exceeded the common criminal bounds of mere unlawful taking; that failure to protect the Trust Funds was a breach of fiduciary duty by those charged with guarding it. Both agreed it was imperative to find stronger ways to protect the surplus from fiscal shenanigans. They succeeded— against determined opposition—in putting some protections in place. For nearly 25 years, the Social Security program took in more than it paid out and the reserves grew beyond even the most optimistic projections. This was a textbook example of government that looked into the future, took the heat from special interests, and delivered on a long-term goal—to ensure retirement and disability benefits for more than 100 million Americans in the next 30 years. Today, that farsighted success is threatened by several factors: the doubling of the national debt to pay for tax cuts, wars, and profligate federal spending to bail out Wall Street speculators and rash investors. Pressing fiscal realities encourage
some to raid the Social Security Trust Fund. The “thieves and embezzlers” that Heinz and Moynihan talked about are cloaked under the guise of a “national debt commission” primed for raising the retirement age or cutting future Social Security benefits. At a time when 401(k) retirement plans continue to suffer from the recession and when Americans struggle to save, the conversation should be about helping Americans—not imperiling their financial future. Perhaps it is time to take a long, hard look at how America subsidizes other countries; how we pay farmers not to grow crops; and how the costs of multiple wars contribute to our dire fiscal straits. Those charged with guarding the till of your retirement funds are instead planning to raid it. Maybe that’s embezzlement and maybe that’s thievery—either way, it’s a crime. Jeffrey Lewis is the former Republican Staff Director for the late Senator Heinz. He can be reached at jlewis@heinzoffice.org.
Fight Flu And Cold Germs (NAPS)—According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Americans get an average of four colds a year. With 65 percent of them caught at home, the kitchen is often the most common breeding ground for germs. These tips can help your kitchen get a “clean bill of health”: 1. Make sure all the things that are commonly touched are disinfected on a daily basis, including faucets, cabinets, the microwave and refrigerator. Other culprits are light switches, telephones, keyboards and remote controls. 2. Because germs like moisture (the highest bacteria counts are found in sinks, mops and sponges), pop sponges in the microwave on high for one minute daily. 3. There is a difference between cleaning and disinfecting, say the pros at Merry Maids. Cleaning means removing dirt, whereas disinfecting means the removal of germs; therefore: • Disinfect countertops weekly with a mixture of one part bleach to three parts warm water and use disinfectant wipes in between. For more cleaning tips and information, visit www.Clean aphoria.com and for more information on Merry Maids visit www.merrymaids.com.

A Love Of Reading Leads To A Lifetime Of Learning (NAPS)—Helping your children to future academic success can start with something as simple as taking the time to read with them. Studies show that reading proficiently by the end of third grade is a critical milestone on the path to graduation. This is the time when children make the transition from learning to read to reading to learn. To reach this milestone, children need the help of parents and caring adults who are willing to read with them, in addition to age-appropriate books. What’s Being Done To make sure parents, caring adults and children get the reading tools and resources they need, organizations such as Target and First Book, which are committed to promoting childhood literacy, provide new books to children from low-income communities. What You Can Do In addition, Kyle Zimmer, president of First Book, offers these answers anyone can use to help nurture a child’s love of reading: Q. How can parents inspire a love of reading? A. Make reading fun. Attend story time readings
at the library, arrange a weekly reading hour in a park with friends or even host family reading nights complete with props to help make books come to life. The most important thing is to read to kids as much as you can. Q. What if parents lack access to books? A. One of the biggest factors affecting literacy is access to books. Visiting your child’s school library is an easy way to find books but parents can also start a neighborhood book exchange or order books online. Programs that serve kids from low-income families can also register with First Book to access brand-new books. Q. How can parents integrate reading into their lives? A. Reading to kids every day is incredibly important. One of the easiest ways for parents to find time to read with their children is to integrate reading activities into their daily routine. For example, parents can read an extra book or two before bedtime, play audio books in the car on the way to school or even ask their children to retell their favorite story during dinner.
Q. How can people without children make a difference? A. Anyone can make a difference in the life of a child by reading with them. An easy way to inspire a love of reading is by volunteering at a nearby school or library or researching volunteer opportunities on websites such as www.VolunteerMatch.org. In A “Stay-Put Economy,” Homeowners Turn To Budget-Friendly Kitchen Makeovers (NAPS)—It’s been called The Stay-Put Economy. And if you’re still living in a house you’d hoped to sell by now, you probably know why. Too many potential buyers are waiting to see if home prices have further to fall. And too many homeowners who may actually have gotten some bites—more like lowball nibbles, really—are locked into mortgages that would require taking so big a loss on a sale that their heads hurt just thinking about it. “Recessions have a way of freezing things,” The Atlantic magazine recently wrote. And so, like you, they stay put. And ask themselves, Now what? Well, the realistic approach, experts say, is to accept that this new reality is likely to last for the foreseeable future, and concentrate on making your current home more comfortable. Attic conversions are big in some circles. But unless you’ve got a relative camping out on the living room sofa till the job market turns, you might want to stick with the one room—the kitchen—that’s the hub of most homes’ activity and needn’t cost a fortune to spruce up. Read on for some budget-friendly makeover ideas: • Floor and Backsplash Tiles. Consumer Reports says kitchen remodeling today “is all about what you need, rather than some over-the-top designer’s checklist.” In other words, “out”: imported hand-painted ceramic; “in”: porcelain, glass, metal and glaze. A Handy Tip: For a fresh and unique look, use different-sized tiles laid out in elegant patterns.
• Cabinets. Entire budgets have been eaten up on just the cost of high-end cabinet replacements alone. Of the other two alternatives—refacing and refinishing—the latter (which also includes repainting) is the most economical. According to DoItYourself.com, all wood and plywood cabinets can be repainted, whereas metal, laminate or melamine pose more of a challenge. A Handy Tip: Use a spray-on finish for the most uniform coverage. • Appliances. If you’ve long coveted a sleek gourmet kitchen but the cost made you wince as much as you did when you heard Meryl Streep’s voice in that Julia Child movie, you’re in luck: The luxury brand Dacor® has come out with a new “Distinctive™ Series” line of appliances, including a range, dishwasher, cooktops and wall ovens that provides an upscale look and quality for less than other high-end models (www.dacor.com). And since the kitchen is responsible for nearly half of a home’s energy consumption, here’s one place you can (truthfully) tell yourself that upgrading saves money over time, since new appliances tend to be much more energy efficient. A Handy Tip: The exclusive Pure Convection system on the Distinctive Wall Ovens features a triple-mesh filter that allows you to cook multiple items at the same time without worrying about flavors transferring from one dish to another—thus making for faster meal preparation. One last thing to remember: If and when you do finally sell your home, the return on investment from kitchen remodeling can be as high as 72.1 percent, depending on the work that was completed. Now do you feel better?
