New Mexico Tourism Hits It Big ‘Day of Enchantment’ Ad Campaign Wins Hospitality & Marketing “Best of Show” Platinum Adrian Awards For the first time ever, the New Mexico Tourism Department is the winner of the highly-coveted “Digital Marketing Best of Show” Award – honoring digital marketing advertising campaigns around the world that “outperform all competitors with creativity and exceptional results” - presented by Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association International. The official announcement was made at the Association’s Adrian Awards Gala Monday (January 31, 2011) in New York City. The Department’s “Day of Enchantment” ad campaign was also winner of a Platinum Award – the second time in three year the Department’s advertising efforts have been so honored – and a Gold Award. The Best of Show and Platinum awards were in the Digital Marketing Category. The campaign was developed in conjunction with M&C Saatchi, the Department’s contract advertising agency. “Our challenge was to bring our Land of Enchantment to life,” Tourism Department Advertising Manager Martín Leger said of the award-winning ‘Day of Enchantment’ ad campaign. “We believe we did just that. Epic in its diversity, beauty and brimming with fierce visionaries and the unusual, New Mexico has an affect on people. The ‘Day of Enchantment’ online photo contest excited New Mexicans about New Mexico, bringing our diversity and beauty to life.” Only one “Digital Marketing Best of Show” award is given and just four Platinum Awards out of the more than 1,300 entries from around the world and 35 Gold Adrian Award winners, including such heavyweights as Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts and Princess Cruises. The eight-week “Day of Enchantment” photo contest was designed to encourage New Mexicans to spend more of their leisure dollars in New Mexico. In all, there were 14,830 photo contest entries and 176,288 total votes cast in the photo contest, generating 712,112 web site page views on www.newmexico.org. In 2008, the Tourism Department’s “The Best Place in the Universe: New Mexico, Earth” television and print advertising campaign – in which office-bound “aliens” deliver the message that New Mexico truly offers the best vacation experience in the universe – was a winner of a Platinum Award in the “Convention and Visitors Bureau/ Destinations / Offices of Tourism” category. The Association is an organization of sales and marketing professionals representing all segments of hospitality, travel and tourism, and is the hospitality industry source for knowledge, community and recognition for leaders committed to professional development, sales growth, revenue optimization, marketing and branding. Approximately 200 industry experts serve as members of the Adrian Awards judging academy. Comprised of advertising, public relations, media, and Internet marketing professionals, along with leading members of the travel community, the judges critique each entry’s marketing objectives, creativity, quality, content and results.

Protecting Your Home New technology lets you watch your house while you’re away.
(NAPS)—Men and women may worry more about different home-security issues, but there’s one thing both can agree on: Nagging doubts about whether they did or didn’t take the proper precautions before leaving can kill a vacation or evening out. That explains why national family safety expert Alison Rhodes—whose TV appearances on the likes of “The Today Show” have earned her the title The Safety Mom—now suggests in-stalling a new system she says “gives you the freedom to control your home at your convenience.” Along with the traditional benefit of an alarm system, ADT Pulse home monitoring system allows users to video-monitor
everything from visitors to package deliveries to children arriving home safely from school—all from a laptop or smart phone. Beyond that (way beyond that, in fact), not only can doors be remotely unlocked and relocked, but thermostats and lights can likewise be adjusted to save as much as 30 percent on utility bills. Which feature is most appealing may be gender-dependent. A recent Harris Interactive survey found men more concerned over whether they locked the front door, as opposed to women’s focus on whether appliances were turned off. Warm To These Ways To Be Both Safe And Comfortable (NAPS)—Heating equipment is the secondleading cause of home fires in the United States—more than 65,000 home fires are attributed to heating equipment each year— but a few simple steps can help you keep your home and family out of such statistics. Portable electric space heaters can be a convenient source of supplemental heat in cold weather; they can also increase the risks of fire or electric shock if not used properly. Problems can result when space heaters are without adequate safety features, placed too close to combustibles or improperly plugged in. To help, the experts at the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) offer these tips on staying safe and warm: • Make sure your space heater has a label indicating that it has been approved by a recognized testing laboratory. • Before using any space heater, read the manufacturer’s instructions and warning labels carefully. • Inspect the cord periodically for damage, such as cracked or broken plugs or loose
connections. Don’t use a heater with a damaged cord. • Never leave a space heater unattended. Turn it off when you leave the room or go to sleep. Don’t leave children or pets unattended in a room with a space heater. • Space heaters are only meant to provide supplemental heat and should never be used to warm bedding, cook food, dry clothing or thaw pipes.
• Install smoke alarms on every floor of your home, inside each bedroom and outside all sleeping areas. Test them monthly. • Heaters must be kept at least three feet away from anything that can burn, including bedding, papers, clothing and rugs. • Locate space heaters out of high-traffic areas and doorways where they may pose a tripping hazard. • Plug space heaters directly into a wall outlet. Don’t use an extension cord or power strip or plug any other electrical devices into the same outlet as the heater. • Place space heaters on level, flat surfaces. Never put them on top of furniture. • Always unplug and safely store the heater when it’s not in use. To help educate consumers about the importance of using space heaters properly, ESFI has a variety of tools and resources, including an animated space heater safety video on the Web at : www.electrical-safety.org.

EyeCare America Offers No-OutOf-Pocket-Cost Medical Eye Care To Qualified Seniors (NAPS)—EyeCare America is reminding seniors that sometimes, “The Best Things in Life Are Free,” and that you can’t put a price tag on love, friendship or the importance of eyesight. This Valentine’s Day campaign encourages those age 65 and older to call EyeCare America to see if they qualify for a free exam. EyeCare America’s national Valentine’s Day health campaign runs through the month of February, encouraging people to call EyeCare America. This year-round program provides eye exams at no out-of-pocket cost to people age 65 and older and offers free educational materials. The eye exams are provided by a corps of nearly 7,000 volunteer ophthalmologists across the U.S. Those interested in the program can visit www. eyecareamerica.org to see if they are eligible. The organization’s online referral center also enables friends and family members to find out instantly if their loved ones are eligible to be matched with an EyeCare America volunteer ophthalmologist. “Blindness and vision impairment have enormous personal, social and economic costs, limiting the activities of otherwise healthy and active people,” said Richard P. Mills, M.D. “By increasing awareness of eye disease and its risk factors and connecting more people with the exams and care they need, EyeCare America works to reduce preventable blindness in the
U.S., thereby allowing our seniors to live more fulfilling and active lives.” As part of this national campaign, celebrity chefs from around the country have contributed delicious eye-healthy desserts for two that are perfect accompaniments to any romantic Valentine’s Day dinner. All recipes are made with foods filled with eye-healthy vitamins and antioxidants, both of which have been proven to help preserve eyesight. Recipes can be found online at www.eyecare america.org. Visitors are encouraged to download the recipe cards and share them with a loved one. The complete set of eye-healthy dessert recipe cards makes a thoughtful Valentine’s Day gift. And they’re FREE! EyeCare America is designed for people who: • Are U.S. citizens or legal residents • Are age 65 and older • Have not seen an ophthalmologist in three or more years • Do not receive eye care through an HMO or the VA. To see immediately if you, a loved one or a friend, 65 or older, is eligible to receive a referral for an eye exam and care, visit www. eyecareamerica.org. EyeCare America is co-sponsored by the Knights Templar Eye Foundation, Inc., with additional support provided by Alcon. The program is endorsed by state and subspecialty ophthalmological societies.
About EyeCare America Established in 1985, EyeCare America, the public service program of the Foundation of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, is committed to the preservation of sight, accomplishing its mission through public service and education. EyeCare America provides eye care services to medically underserved seniors and those at increased risk for eye disease through its corps of nearly 7,000 volunteer ophthalmologists dedicated to serving their communities. More than 90 percent of the care made available is provided at no out-of-pocket cost to the patients. Since its inception, EyeCare America has helped more than 1.5 million people. EyeCare America is a non-profit program whose success is made possible through charitable contributions from individuals, foundations and corporations. More information can be found at www.eyecareamerica.org.
Clouds In The Forecast: Good News For Small Businesses (NAPS)—Anyone who’s ever started a business—or even just thought about it—knows that success often hinges on taking risks. That’s part of what makes running a small business so challenging, yet exciting. Some small and medium-sized businesses are reducing risk by pursuing a new trend in computing, one that can significantly improve the way smaller companies operate. This trend is called “cloud computing,” and, according to recent Microsoft research, 12 percent of SMBs have used cloud services to help start their businesses. Though the term “cloud” may seem a little confusing, it’s simply a way of accessing technology via the Internet. Think of all the benefits the Internet has brought to modern life—you can book movie tickets online; manage your bank account from anywhere; connect with friends through e-mail, phone calls and video chats; and do much more. Similarly, the cloud has ushered in a host of benefits for SMBs, creating a technology revolution that provides access to enterprise-class software at a price tag most SMBs can afford. If you’ve ever wondered if cloud computing makes sense for your business, there are five key benefits you may care to consider:
• Reliability: With cloud services, you no longer have to worry about losing or accidentally erasing important files. Any document you work on in the cloud gets saved there, too, so you’ll always have access to that file. • Mobility: The cloud “understands” that today’s business world is 24/7, global and mobile. That means when you use a business application in the cloud, you can access it from any computer and possibly from your mobile device, as well. By allowing remote access, the cloud helps businesses mobilize their employees and thus reduce operating costs. • Flexibility: You can pay for cloud services in whichever way makes the most sense for your business, whether through a subscription or by purchasing a license for a suite of Web services. • Efficiency: In many cases, using a cloud service can increase efficiency— videoconferencing can reduce time spent traveling, collaboration software can help employees share documents and communicate with one another, and simplified document storage options streamline administrative work. • Integration: Some cloud services even work well alongside the software you’re already using and can provide enhanced capabilities to businesses that have already invested in on-premises software. When the cloud has your small business covered, you’re more likely to weather a stormy economy successfully and brighten your company’s bottom line. For more information on the cloud and business success, visit www. Microsoft.com/cloud.

Oh, Gee - Is 4G Right For Me? (NAPS)—If you are wondering what all the fuss over 4G networks and devices is all about, there’s good news. For starters, you’re not alone—and as tech topics go, it’s not really that confusing once you become familiar with a few basic ideas. Here is a brief overview: The Network The “G” in this case stands for generation—as in generation of wireless technology. Developing the first generation resulted in making mobile phones widely available. The second generation, or 2G, made the switch to a digital format possible and text messaging on a wide scale feasible. The next generation—3G technology—made it possible for mobile devices to access enhanced information services such as websites and made smartphones more widely available. For consumers, 4G mobile will be less about making phone calls—although it may help reception—and more about Internet access on portable computers and smartphones. Sprint is currently a 4G network provider reaching 120 million potential users across the U.S. Some consumers will be able to use 4G technology for a home broadband connection without running any cable into their house. It can also be used for accessing the Internet on the go without having to be linked to a wireless hotspot. In general, the connection speeds offered on a 4G network mean that with a compatible mobile device, consumers will be able to watch TV, scan the Internet or stream movies at speeds that they
usually associate with a hardwired or cable connection. Compatible Devices Sprint has introduced 18 4G devices, 12 of which are commercially available today. One device that is already getting lots of attention is the HTC EVO 4G. Recently, Good Housekeeping honored it with a Very Innovative Products—or VIP—Award. Popular Mechanics gave it its Breakthrough Award. And TheStreet. com rated the HTC EVO 4G the No. 1 Android phone. It features what’s been described as the best Android operating system to date, touch-screen technology, live-streaming video and dual cameras for video chat, plus a huge 4.3-inch screen. The latest version HTC EVO Shift 4G also offers a full QWERTY keyboard, social networking integration and HD video recording in 720p format. Other devices with 4G capability include the Novatel Wireless ultracompact MiFi 3G/4G Mobile Hotspot. The device lets you connect up to five Wi-Fi-enabled devices—including tablets, eReaders, laptops or gaming consoles— to the Sprint 4G or 3G network. It delivers a wireless experience with no cables or software installation required. The Mobile Hotspot has a battery life of up to four hours of usage and 60 hours of standby time. It can support the connectivity needs of a household at home or help a frequent traveler
or even a small-business team connect to the Internet while on the road. There’s an external display with status indicators for battery, signal strength and number of connected devices, and shared storage capability through a MicroSD slot for up to a 32GB memory card. It supports Windows, Macintosh and Linux operating systems. To learn more, visit www.sprint.com/4G or call (800) Sprint1.
