Additional demonstrations—including flint knapping, fire starting (weather permitting) and other crafts—will take place throughout the day. The Friends of Coronado will sponsor storytelling and docent-led tours of the Painted Kiva. Interpretive staff from New Mexico State Parks’ Rio Grande Nature Center will provide walking tours of the Bosque. Rio Rancho Astronomical Society volunteers will share their solar observatory with the public. As well, the Museum of New Mexico’s Van of Enchantment will be on site. Summer Fever Pandemic To Follow Frigid Winter (NAPS)—For most of the United States, it has been a long, cold winter. Many cities, in fact, reported their coldest, wettest winters in history, which experts say is the source of a “Summer Fever” pandemic not seen in decades. Summer Fever symptoms include a sudden urge to indulge in new experiences and find new sources of fun. It’s akin to the feeling of freedom after the last day of school. Although Summer Fever is not great news for employers in terms of productivity, it’s a boon for boat dealers who provide the means to indulge in all that summer fun. And interest is already starting to take hold, as evidenced by winter boat shows around the country reporting attendance jumps upwards of 14 percent compared to previous years. This trend could benefit companies that make products focused on making it easy for firsttime buyers to enter the boating market. One such company is Yamaha Motor Corporation, USA, which sells personal watercraft under the WaveRunner brand and runabout boats 21 and 24 feet in length. Yamaha’s focus on value and cost control has helped the brand become the best-
selling personal watercraft in the industry today as well as the best-selling boats in the 20- to 25-foot category. According to Bryan Seti, national marketing manager for Yamaha Watercraft, WaveRunner and boat sales are exceeding 2010–2011 projections, with most boat show markets reporting doubledigit sales increases. “Following this brutal winter, all eyes are already on the summer months. And this comes as consumer savings are at a high not seen in many
years and interest rates remain very low,” said Seti. “Visitor traffic on our Facebook, Twitter and YouTube channels is buzzing with activity, which we see as a clear indication that people are ready for summer, and they are excited to get outdoors and recreate with the family.” Erin Shaughnessy, producer for the recreational boating website Best of Boating, concurs with Seti. “Our visitor traffic is at an alltime high, which is a good sign for the boating industry, which has been beaten up during the last few years. Boat buyers are still looking for a great value and low cost of ownership, which are areas where companies like Yamaha have a distinct advantage.” A recent survey of Best of Boating visitors shows that boat and personal watercraft buyers are thinking with their left brain when it comes to a pending boat purchase. “Our visitors have become more rational when it comes to paying for unnecessary features and more analytical when it comes to comparing brand reliability, fuel efficiency and the daily cost of operation,” said Shaughnessy. “For 2011, less is more.”

Safe Social Commerce: The Next Shopping Frontier (NAPS)—With more than 500 million active users spending over 700 billion minutes a month on its site, Facebook has become a premier platform for socializing, sharing, searching and, now, shopping online. The emerging trend of selling and buying merchandise through Facebook and other social media platforms is here and it’s exploding. Booz & Company estimates that the dollar volume of goods sold through social media overall could increase sixfold, from $5 billion in 2010 to $30 billion in 2015. Businesses and consumers alike refer to this paradigm as “Social Commerce,” a fusion of social media and e-commerce that enables consumers to
shop directly through their social networks. Many stores are leveraging social networks to allow consumers to execute transactions in the comfort of their own Facebook pages, where attention is high and the user’s likes and dislikes are clear. The Social Commerce premise is that the focus is on people instead of products. There is a treasure trove of data based on users’ interests on their Facebook pages, and businesses can finally tailor the presentation of merchandise to offer a truly customized shopping experience. Businesses can now sell consumers exactly what they want, and consumers are reaping the benefits. Social Commerce helps businesses offer consumers exclusive deals and special promotions while enabling them to connect with, listen to, understand and engage with their customers to improve the overall shopping experience. Furthermore, the information and content on Facebook is “shared,” meaning that friends can update each other on their recent online shopping sprees. But in addition to benefits and opportunities, emerging communications channels always come with some new potential risks, and Social Commerce is no exception. The main concerns for consumers are security and
privacy. Especially when phishing scams, identity theft and hackers are constantly in the headlines, consumers are more aware than ever of the need for online security and identity protection. With Social Commerce, cybercriminals are more likely to exploit the inherent trust that social networking sites enjoy. So how can consumers gain confidence in Social Commerce? To know if a website, link and transaction are safe, the first thing to look for is an SSL Certificate, a technology that enables encryption when users connect to a website. When the lock icon appears in an Internet browser, this means SSL is in place, encrypting the site visitor’s information. Symantec, the provider of VeriSign® SSL, has been working with a number of social commerce platform providers to offer enhanced security to organizations with a fan store on Facebook. When fans visit a fan store protected by VeriSign SSL, they will see the familiar “VeriSign Trusted” seal that more than 100,000 online businesses choose to show that their transactions are secure. When consumers buy directly on their Facebook pages and see SSL, they know they can trust the businesses they “like” and that their transactions are protected with the most advanced and proven security technology.

It’s Common. It’s Potentially Serious. It’s Preventable. What You Should Know About Invasive Pneumococcal Disease
(NAPS)—Did you know that children in the U.S. younger than 5 years of age are at increased risk of contracting a serious condition known as invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD)?1 IPD is a group of illnesses that can be life-threatening. The group includes some types of meningitis and bacteremia, and it’s caused by a bacterium called pneumococcus.2 Armed with the facts, parents can help protect their children against IPD. Common questions parents can ask their child’s doctor include: Is my child at risk? Children younger than 5 are at increased risk for IPD.1 Invasive pneumococcal disease is often spread through sneezing, coughing, and even breathing. Children can pass it on to each other in any setting where there is close contact, such as day care.2 Is vaccination an option? Vaccination can help prevent IPD in infants and young children. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommend routine vaccination with a pneumococcal 13-valent conjugate vaccine for the prevention of IPD in infants and toddlers.3,4 In addition, the CDC and AAP recommend that children 15 months to 5 years of age receive a single dose of a pneumococcal 13-valent conjugate vaccine even if they were previously vaccinated with four doses of Prevnar® (Pneumococcal 7-valent Conjugate Vaccine [Diphtheria CRM197 Protein]).3,4 The immune response from this schedule might be lower for the 6 additional strains (types 1, 3, 5, 6A, 7F, and 19A) than if your child had received the full 4 doses of Prevnar 13® (Pneumococcal 13-valent Conjugate Vaccine [Diphtheria CRM197 Protein]). It’s not known how medically important this difference is. What is different about Prevnar 13®? Prevnar 13® can help protect against 6 additional strains of pneumococcus that cause IPD. One of the additional strains, 19A, causes nearly half the IPD in children younger than 5 in the U.S.1,5 Can antibiotics treat IPD? Antibiotics can be used to treat IPD infections. Unfortunately, using antibiotics for the wrong reason or too often has caused them to not work at times. This is important for patients with IPD, because some strains of pneumococcus have been difficult to treat with common antibiotics.6 Strain 19A, the most common strain affecting children in the U.S. today, is frequently antibiotic resistant.6 Doctors say children should be vaccinated against the several strains of a serious respiratory condition.
INDICATION FOR PREVNAR 13® • Prevnar 13® is a vaccine approved for use in children 6 weeks through 5 years of age (prior to the 6th birthday) • Prevnar 13® is indicated for active immunization for the prevention of invasive disease caused by 13 strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae (1, 3, 4, 5, 6A, 6B, 7F, 9V, 14, 18C, 19A, 19F, and 23F) IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION FOR PREVNAR 13® • Prevnar 13® should not be given to anyone with a severe allergic reaction to any component of Prevnar 13®, Prevnar® (Pneumococcal 7-valent Conjugate Vaccine [Diphtheria CRM197 Protein]), or any diphtheria toxoid–containing vaccine • Prevnar 13® may not protect all individuals receiving the vaccine. • Children with weakened immune systems may have a reduced immune response to Prevnar 13® • A temporary pause of breathing following vaccination has been observed in some infants born prematurely • The most commonly reported serious adverse events include bronchiolitis (an infection of the lungs) (0.9%, 1.1%), gastroenteritis (inflammation of the stomach and small intestine) (0.9%, 0.9%), and pneumonia (0.9%, 0.5%) for Prevnar 13® and Prevnar® (Pneumococcal 7-valent Conjugate Vaccine [Diphtheria CRM197 Protein]), respectively • The most common side effects are redness, swelling and tenderness at the injection site, fever, decreased appetite, irritability, increased sleep, and decreased sleep. Any side effects associated with the vaccination should be reported to your child’s health care provider • Ask your child’s health care provider about the risks and benefits of Prevnar 13®. Only a health care provider can decide if Prevnar 13® is right for your child To learn more about IPD or see the Full Prescribing Information for Prevnar 13®, visit www.Prevnar13. com. References 1. Tips On Making A Do-It-Yourself Move (NAPS)—For a growing number of families, relocating has become a “moving experience.” That’s because whether they’re going across town or across the country, they’re choosing to move themselves. For some, it’s a way to have more control over the process. For others, it can add up to significant savings. To help you take part in this trend, here are some tips from the professionals at an industry-leading company—Penske. • Rent from experts. Renting trucks from knowledgeable professionals can help ensure that your move is smooth and easy. “Moving is one of life’s most stressful moments,” said Don Mikes, vice president of truck rental for Penske. “Our goal is to help guide people through their journey.” • Select smart. A 12- or 16-foot truck can be a very versatile size—excellent for moving everything from a few large items or the contents of a small condo or apartment. • Reserve early. Book your rental truck at least two weeks in advance. • Pack wisely. Load your heaviest items first. Avoid injury by always bending your knees and lifting with your legs. • The right accessories can make a difference. Boxes, bubble wrap, moving blankets
and hand trucks are essential to protect your items and make your move more enjoyable. • Mark it up. Label as you pack. It makes it easier to put the boxes in the right room when unloading. • Think safety first. Rental trucks are taller, wider, heavier and require more stopping distance than cars. Pick up your truck early. Practice driving. Take precautions when the truck is loaded. Beware of low-hanging branches and overhangs when cornering. Park in welllit areas—and padlock the rear door. Penske Truck Rental has 24/7 emergency roadside assistance and optional protection plans. • Get oriented. Ask the truck rental associate to walk you through the vehicle’s features. It should be a clean and well-maintained vehicle. • Drive green. Use a truck rental company affiliated with EPA’s SmartWay program. A little preparation goes a long way to ensure an easier—and safe—move. More free moving tips are available at www.PenskeTruck Rental.com.
