LBUQUERQUE, NM— Come to the ABQ BioPark Zoo to participate in Wolf Awareness Days on October 21, 22 and 23 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Learn about Mexican gray wolf conservation in New Mexico through interactive discovery stations showcasing hides and bones, mask and craft-making and educational games. On Saturday, October 22, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service experts will provide posters, handouts and information. The Mexican gray wolf was listed as endangered under the federal Endangered Species Act in 1976, and captive breeding programs around the southwest have attempted to re-establish wild populations. “Wolves play a critical role in our environment as major predators, helping to keep elk and deer populations in balance with the habitat,” said Megan Lanigan, Zoo Education Coordinator. “In the early 1900s, people began eliminating wolves, which caused an increase in grazing pressure on trees, destroying the habitat in some areas.” Visitors to the Zoo can see three of the BioPark’s Mexican gray wolves on exhibit. Mariposa, Scarlet and Anuk, all females, display some of the complex social behaviors of wolves in the wild. Wolves have a hierarchical structure to their packs, and Scarlet is the dominant wolf at the BioPark. Wolf Awareness Days are included with regular admission. The BioPark is an accessible facility and a division of the Cultural Services Department, City of Albuquerque, Richard J. Berry, Mayor. For more information, visit www.cabq.gov/biopark or call 311 locally or (505) 7682000 (Relay NM or 711).

Contemporary Jazz

R

amón López and Jim Baker present their new contemporary jazz performance Azul: free improvisation music that draws heavily on melodic and rhythmic beats and fusion of Mediterranean music. Azul will be presented just in two cities in the US, at the Umbrella Music Jazz Festival in Chicago, launched in the spring of 2006 and considered as one of the city’s most important promoter of touring artists from around the Globe, and Albuquerque. Azul is a show that captures the expressive movements and natural rhythm of Contemporary European Jazz within a formal frame. Ramón Lopez was born on August 6th 1961 in Alicante, Spain.

He is a drummer, percussionist and composer. He began as a self-taught drummer in the mid1970s. Witnessing a Max Roach solo concert in 1980 was a turning point that fundamentally changed his understanding of music. His first recording as a leader, an album of solo drums, was released in 1997 on the British Leo label linked to free jazz music and improvisation. Among others, Lopez has also worked at concerts and festivals and in the recording studio with many musicians of the jazz avant-garde: Rashied Ali, Majid Bekkas, Anthony Coleman, Andrew Cyrille and Sophia Domancich. Ramon Lopez is an un-typical percussionist. He is currently one of the most respected European musicians in the area of

contemporary jazz or improvised music. The French government named him “Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters” in 2008. In 2011, Ramón participated in the Chicago Jazz Festival. Jim Baker has been playing in and around Chicago as a pianist, keyboardist, and synthesist for more than two decades, mostly in improvisational contexts. He initially studied piano with Thomas Scott, of Glen Ellyn, Illinois, and studied composition with Morgan Powell and Herbert Brun at the University of Illinois at Urbana. During the 1980’s, Baker played frequently in groups led by saxophonist Harold Jones (a.k.a. Hal Raru), and also played in the Nicholas Tremulis band. After leaving the Tremulis group, Baker

was an active participant in the then-nascent free improvisation scene. Nowadays, Baker performs regularly as house pianist at the weekly Sunday evening jam sessions at Fred Anderson’s Velvet Lounge, in Chicago. His activities as a writer/composer have been ongoing during the past twenty years, and some of his compositions have been recorded by Steam and Broken Wire. The concert will be held on November 5th at 7pm at the Outpost Performance Space, located at 210 Yale SE. Tickets are available at the Outpost Performance Space Box Office. They accept phone orders as well as in-person sales. Tickets are $10/ $5 (students and Outpost member discount).

Ready Your Ride For Rough Weather

B

y taking a few preventative maintenance steps, you can keep your car on the road to safety and savings when temperatures drop. • Check the air pressure in your tires regularly and make sure your spare tire is also inflated properly. Contrary to the popular belief that you should reduce your tire pressure in cold weather, the fact is, tire pressure usually lowers itself in winter and raises itself in summer. All you need to do is maintain the pressure at the level recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. Don’t inflate your tires based on the maximum pressure listed on the sidewall of the tire—you do have to make sure you don’t over inflate. • Cold temperatures can be hard on a battery. Check the condition of the battery cable, posts and fasteners for rust and corrosion. Have your battery checked by a professional who will check for corrosion and check the electrical system. • Try using a synthetic oil, which generally contains fewer impurities and has much more consistent molecular structure compared to a comparable quality mineral oil. These differences result in better frictional characteristics (less friction), better natural cold flow and a more consistent viscosity across a wide temperature range. The better cold flow is especially beneficial at a cold start. The engine will start easier and the oil gets to where it needs to be quicker.

Viscosity is a liquid’s thickness and resistance to flow and all engine oils thicken with decreasing temperature and thin with increasing temperature. With a high-quality synthetic engine oil, such as Royal Purple, the viscosity changes less with changing temperature, so the oil stays closer to the optimal thickness for engine operation. High-quality synthetic engine oils also typically have a better pour point than nonsynthetic oils. The pour point is the lowest temperature at which the oil can be poured out of a container. Conventional oils can become so thick at low temperatures they won’t pour out of the bottle. Synthetics will generally retain pourability at much lower temperatures for a given viscosity grade. • Protect your vehicle’s fluid lines from freezing. Flush and refill your cooling system with a 50/50 mixture. You should have a minimum of 20 percent antifreeze concentration in a street-driven vehicle. Royal Purple’s radiator coolant additive Purple Ice contains corrosion inhibitors and lubricants that condition the seals on the water pump and can be used with Dex-Cool antifreeze. By making sure your vehicle is ready for bad weather, there’s a good chance you’ll arrive safely at your destination instead of being stranded by the side of the road. Improving your credit score By Jason Alderman

M

any people suffered blows to their credit scores during the unstable economy of the last few years, whether because they missed payments, exceeded credit limits or, more seriously, experienced a home foreclosure or even bankruptcy. Is this a big deal? Absolutely. If your credit score drops significantly, you’ll likely be charged higher loan and credit card interest rates and offered lower credit limits – or perhaps be disqualified altogether. And, lower scores can also lead to higher insurance rates and harm your ability to rent an apartment or get a cell phone. Fortunately, taking these few steps will begin improving your credit score almost immediately: First, review your credit reports from the three major credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian and Transunion) to see which negative actions your creditors have reported and look for errors or fraudulent activity. You can order one free report per year from each atwww.annualreport.com. You can also order a FICO credit score (the score most commonly used by lenders) for $19.95 from www.myfico.com to know exactly where you stand. “It definitely pays to have a good FICO Score,” says Greg Pelling, vice president of Scoring and

Analytics at FICO. “Based on today’s rates, you could save $30,000 in interest on a $100,000 home loan over 30 years, if your score is above 740 rather than below 620. Lenders base their decision on many factors but your FICO score plays a major role.” Never exceed individual credit limits. In fact, the lower your credit utilization ratio (the percentage of available credit you’re using), the better. Try to keep your overall utilization ratio – and ratios on individual cards and lines of credit – below 30 percent. Even if you pay off your balance each month, showing a high utilization ratio at any time during the month could conceivably hurt your score. A few suggestions: • Spread purchases among multiple cards to keep individual balances lower. • Make extra payments midway through billing cycles so your outstanding balances appear lower. • Ask lenders to reinstate higher limits if your payment history has been solid. Transferring balances to a new credit card to get a lower rate dings your credit score by a few points – although it won’t take long to recover. But, say you move a $2,000 balance from a card with a $10,000 limit to one with a $4,000 limit;

you’ve immediately gone from a 20 percent utilization ratio to 50 percent on the new card. A few other credit score-improvement tips: • Make sure that credit card limits reported to credit bureaus are accurate. • Don’t automatically close older, unused accounts; 15 percent of your score is based on credit history. In fact, occasionally make small charges on existing accounts to make sure lenders don’t close them out. • Each time you open a new account there’s a slight impact on your score, so avoid doing so in the months before a major purchase like a home or car. • Pay off medical bills and parking, traffic or library fines. Once old, unpaid bills go into collection, they can damage your credit. There are many good resources for learning what you can do to repair and protect your credit scores, including the Credit Education Center at www.myfico.com/CreditEducation, the Credits and Loans page at www.ftc.gov/bcp/menus/consumer/credit.shtm, and What’s My Score (www. whatsmyscore.org), a financial literacy program run by Visa Inc. The 10,000 Hour Rule by Laura Mathis

I

have come across a fascinating discussion on mastery of one’s skill, and though it was very applicable to both actors and all business professionals. My father encouraged me to read book called The Outliers, by Malcolm Gladwell. It’s a fascinating book and a certain chapter in particular got me very excited. Is there such a thing as innate talent? The book explains the obvious answer is yes. Achievement is talent plus preparation. But, the closer psychologists look back at careers of the gifted, the smaller the role of innate talent seems to apply and the bigger role preparation seems to play. In the Outliers, it has been discovered how much time actually correlates to being a success in one’s field…ten thousand hours. “The emerging picture from such studies is that ten thousand hours of practice is required to achieve the level of mastery associated with being a world class expert- in anything”. This is true for any profession- actor, salesman, attorney, criminal, basket ball player, writer, etc. So, sit down with a calculator and ask yourself- how many hours have you logged? And how far are you from 10,000 hours? Better make a plan, those hours aren’t going to log themselves!
