MESSAGE FROM THE SECRETARY OF VETERANS AFFAIRS
VETERANS DAY 2011
A
t the 11th hour, on the 11th day, of the 11th month of 2011, we will pause to honor America’s Veterans and celebrate their contributions to our way of life. Few have given more to our Nation than the men and women who have served in our Armed Forces in peace and in war. Generation after generation—from Bunker Hill and Bennington to Baghdad and Abbottabad—protected, defended, and preserved the principles and ideals that define our democracy. Across that remarkable sweep of history, today’s America was shaped at Lexington and Concord, Antietam and Gettysburg, in the skies over Midway, on the beaches of Normandy, in winter’s grip at Chosin Reservoir, in the heat of Ia Drang Valley, from the Persian Gulf into Afghanistan and Iraq by those who wore our Nation’s uniforms. Over twenty-two million living Veterans today embody our exceptional character and values as a people—each a line in our Nation’s history, but together many chapters towards today’s future. The Department of Veterans Affairs fulfills its obligation to serve Veterans, their families, and survivors of the fallen by living a set of core values defining who we are as an organization: Integrity, Commitment, Advocacy, Respect, and Excellence—I CARE. Veterans trust that we will live these values, every day, in our medical facilities, our benefits offices, and our national cemeteries. And VA is committed to serving them. We are privileged to provide the very best in compassionate and quality care and services, delivered by our more than 300,000 employees. As we honor and celebrate the contributions of all of our Nation’s Veterans, we take special pride in those Veterans who work here at VA—over 100,000 of us—bringing to our mission the skills, knowledge, attributes, experiences, and unwavering commitment to the well-being of our fellow Veterans. Take a moment and visit VA’s Flicker site to see our photographs and snapshots from earlier times in uniform. You can access

God bless our Veterans. And may God continue to bless this wonderful country of ours.
HELPING CAREGIVERS MANAGE STRESS
here is good news for caregivers. Resources are available that are designed to help them manage the stress that can often accompany their role. In the United States, more than 65 million caregivers spend an average of 20 hours each week providing care for people who can’t fully care for themselves. While this compassionate act is emotionally rewarding, it can take a toll on caregivers, leading to stress and potential burnout. A self-assessment for caregivers Here are a few questions to ask yourself about your caregiver experience. As a caregiver, do you: • Worry that your overall health is spiraling downward? • Believe that the only choice you have is to provide care for someone? • Neglect your own personal or physical concerns?
• Experience exhaustion or depression much of the time? • Notice that your eating habits have changed—eating more or less than normal? • Make adjustments to your work schedule or take significant amounts of time off from work to be a caregiver? • Feel like the relationship with the person you’re caring for is strained— where you are increasingly impatient and frustrated? • Worry about the financial commitment of your caregiving? • Feel overwhelmed with your situation, but are not sure how to make it better? Providing caregivers with care Carole Crook of Georgia answered “yes” to many of these questions during the nine years she cared for her husband James, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. She decided
she wanted to keep him home for the rest of his lifetime, but as his health deteriorated, she reached a point where she didn’t know where to turn. That’s when she looked into a program called “Solutions for Caregivers,” provided through James’ former employer. Solutions for Caregivers is designed to provide the support that caregivers need. Through the program, nurses assess a family’s situation and needs, develop a care plan and discuss recommendations with the whole family. The program connected Carole with a care manager named Audrey, who sent a nurse to their home to conduct an assessment. “She checked out James and his blood pressure. She wrote down all my questions and did a thorough job with it,” Carole said. “It took maybe two weeks to get the results back.
After that, everything fell right on into place.” Audrey worked with Carole and James for five months, providing support prior to James passing away. Her imprint remains with Carole to this day. “Ms. Audrey, she was doing her job, but she just seemed like, ‘I know you and I will take care of you.’ She did above and beyond. I am so glad my path crossed with her path,” Carole said. “She became like a personal friend. She was so understanding and so nice. I just can’t give her enough praise and she did everything so thoroughly.” You can learn more about caregiver support at WhatIsSolutionsForCaregivers.com.

Veterans Day: Honoring America’s Veterans Includes Caring at Life’s End We Honor Veterans Program Helping Hospices Better Care for Veterans
A
lexandria, Va – It surprises many Americans to learn that 25 percent of all deaths in the US are Veterans. That’s 1,800 people a day; more than 680,000 Veteran deaths every year. As the nation honors these American heroes for their military service on Veterans Day, November 11, it’s important to remember that they also deserve recognition and compassionate care at the end of life’s journey. An innovative program, We Honor Veterans, is helping healthcare professionals honor our Veterans. The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization in collaboration with the Department of Veterans Affairs launched We Honor Veterans a pioneering campaign to help improve the care dying Veterans receive from the nation’s hospice and palliative care providers. By recognizing the unique needs of our nation’s Veterans who are facing a life-limiting illness, hospice and palliative care providers are able to accompany and guide these men and woman towards a more peaceful end-
Now the whys. Last week was coolant. This week, tires. When roads are slick, tires become VERY important. Pressure…the average car tire will be inflated to around 35psi. The actual tire pressure for your car or truck can be usually be found on the “B” pillar of the driver’s door. Open the driver’s door and follow the part of the car that the door latches to, down. There should be a metal plate there with tire pressures on it. Alternatively, the plate may be on the door itself, in the glove box, or sometimes under the hood. Keep in mind that your manufacturer may have different tire pressures on the front than the rear. If the tires are not inflated properly, they cannot do their job and that can dramatically affect how the vehicle handles in an emergency. If ever in doubt…most shops will check your tire pressures for free. Tread depth…this is the amount of tread left on the tire from the outermost part to the WEAR BAR INDICATORS. Not the bottom of the tread trough. Wear bar indicators are straight lines that go perpendicular or across the tread. Look closely, you will find them. I really recommend you purchase a tread depth gauge from your local parts house. They are not expensive. If the top of the tread to the wear bar in-
ing. For Veterans who experienced combat service or other trauma, this can be particularly important as experiences from the past may resurface at the end of life. “All hospices are serving Veterans but often aren’t aware of that person’s service in the armed forces. Through We Honor Veterans we are taking a giant step forward in helping hospice and palliative care professionals and volunteers understand and serve Veterans at the end of life,” said J. Donald Schumacher, NHPCO president and CEO. “It is time that we step up and acquire the necessary skills and fulfill our mission to serve these men and women with the dignity they deserve.” More than 1,000 hospice organizations across the country have joined We Honor Veterans and are increasing their skills and capacity for serving Veterans. Activities range from utilizing a military history checklist at admission, recognition events like pinning ceremonies and certificate presentations, to outreach to other community organizations. Additionally, WHV is helping hospices work more effectively with VA medical facilities in their communities. As we celebrate our nation’s heroes this Veterans Day – and every day of the year – we must not forget that it is never too late to give them a hero’s welcome home.
