Albuquerque Considered Best Location for Viewing Solar Eclipse in May

V

isitors to Albuquerque in late May are in for a treat. On May 20th, the first annular eclipse in 18 years will be visible from the United States. Albuquerque is said to be the best urban location to view this “ultimate astronomical event.” The type of eclipse is an annular eclipse, which occurs when the moon covers most of the sun’s disk leaving a thin ring of light around the edge appearing as a “ring of fire.” The eclipse begins over Asia and, traveling at more than 1,000 MPH, the shadow of the eclipse races to the southeast over parts of California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah and New Mexico before sunset. Locally, viewers will be able to see the annular eclipse four about four minutes beginning just before sunset at 7:33pm in Albuquerque on the western horizon. Partial eclipse will be visible from approximately 6:30-8:00pm. The Albuquerque Convention & Visitors Bureau and several partner organizations are inviting astronomy buffs and interested star and sky enthusiasts to visit Albuquerque, New Mexico, for this rare viewing event. Plan now to enjoy the wonders of our solar system with viewing opportunities and local educational activities for the entire family. Seven entities have established viewing and educational events during the week before and on May 20th led by astronomers, graduate students and museum educators. • Anderson-Abruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum (viewing and education) • New Mexico Museum of Nuclear Science & History (viewing and education) • University of New Mexico Observatory (viewing and education) • New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science (educational events only) • Hard Rock Pavilion at Mesa del Sol (viewing only) • Sandia Peak Tramway (viewing only) Each of the viewing locations above offers a direct site of the horizon for optimal viewing of the eclipse. Petroglyph National Monument is offering a viewing event that has been so popular it is already sold out. Safety will be of utmost importance while viewing the eclipse. People should NOT look directly at the sun as it could cause eye damage. Solar viewing glasses or special pinhole cameras are needed to view the annular eclipse and will be available at the above event locations.

Transit of Venus Another solar event will take place just two weeks later on Tuesday, June 5th called a Transit of Venus; where the planet Venus visibly and slowly moves across the disk of the sun. This is the ONLY transit of Venus that will take place in the 21st century. If you miss this, you will never see it again in your lifetime, and it will also be viewed perfectly from Albuquerque.

Getting The Most From Your Workout

N

o matter the season, preparation is key if you want to get the maximum benefit from your workout. Warming up, for instance, is critical whether your sport is basketball, baseball, spring football, lacrosse or soccer. The same is true when it comes to what you wear—top to bottom. Layering and fabrics all play a role in the success of a workout, especially when the weather is unpredictable. To help, here are a few tips: Choose The Right Apparel:

Wearing comfortable clothing that wicks moisture away from the skin can also make a difference. To help make finding the right clothing even easier, adidas has introduced Sport Performance Underwear. It features lightweight, ultrasoft, breathable fabric treated with an anti-microbial finish to inhibit odor. The underwear is designed to work with you during your activity for a more ergonomic fit. The company also offers Athletic Stretch and Athletic Cotton briefs and a variety of tops and bottoms made from premium soft cotton for

maximum comfort. To learn more, visit the website at www.adidas.com. Warm Up: Warming up before starting your routine helps to reduce the risk of tearing or straining muscles. Cool Down: Many believe gradually reducing the temperature of your muscles can help reduce injury and stiffness. (NAPSI)—

Cleaning And Organizing-Year-Round

O

nce a year, many people scour their homes—deep cleaning and getting rid of items they haven’t used or worn in years. However, people who clean and stay organized throughout the year are more likely to be happy, healthy and financially comfortable. “I see clients every day who are extremely stressed due to the level of disorganization in their life,” said Lisa Zaslow, professional organizer and owner of Gotham Organizers. “If you keep your home organized, with a minimal level of clutter, you’ll see a number of benefits above and beyond being able to see your floor.” What are the other areas of your life that benefit from being organized? Emotional—A high level of disorganization can lead to excessive stress. Zaslow helped one client reorganize her home, and afterward the client “woke up happy, instead of stressed like before.” Health—An organized home is cleaner, keeping germ and bacteria levels to a minimum. Financial—“You’d be surprised how many people have money in old purses when I come to help them get organized,” said Zaslow. Additionally, being organized means you’ll be on top of paperwork—one missed credit card payment can rack up late fees, increase your interest rate and affect your credit score. Knowing that there are all these additional benefits, how can you get started? According

to Zaslow, it doesn’t matter where you start, so said Zaslow. For more information, go to http:// ebaytradingassistant.com/money. begin with the easiest or most annoying task. • Cull through closets and storage to find items that you’re no longer using and get rid of them, like gadgets, last season’s clothes or collectibles. If they are still in great condition, bring them to an eBay Trading Assistant. Trading Assistants are experienced eBay sellers around the country who will sell your items on eBay for a commission. (NAPSI)— They do all the work for you—making you money while you clear out clutter. • Box up excessive paperwork or magazines and label them “Items to sort” as the first step. It will make you feel better to know the process has begun. • Organize one room at a time to make the task less overwhelming. Making yourself a schedule of which room comes next helps show your progress. Finally, “Think of it as a treasure hunt. You’ll find something that you’ve been missing and something you didn’t even know you had,”

Extra Tax Savings For Parents

A

ccording to the Department of Agriculture, it will cost a middleincome family, on average, $226,920 to raise a child born in 2010. Fortunately, the cost per child decreases for additional children. Similarly, the more kids you have, the bigger your tax savings. “Uncle Sam offers several family-oriented tax benefits,” said TaxACT spokesperson Jessi Dolmage. “Determining which ones you qualify for can be confusing because of rules about filing status, itemized deductions and income levels.” Tax preparation software solutions like TaxACT eliminate the guesswork. Answer simple questions to determine if you qualify, and the program will complete the tax forms and check your return for errors. Here are some requirements for key tax breaks available on next year’s return. Although your 2012 tax return isn’t due until April 2013, you’ll want to keep receipts and detailed documentation throughout the year to substantiate the credits and deductions you claim. Popular Credits And Deductions • One out of four qualifying low- to moderate-income taxpayers overlook the Earned Income Tax Credit each year. If the credit eliminates taxes owed, you can receive the remaining amount as a refund. Married taxpayers must file joint returns.

• If you pay for the care of children under 13 years of age so you (and your spouse) can work, find work or attend school, you may be eligible for the Child & Dependent Care Credit. Examples of care include nursery school, preschool, before- and after-school care, day camps (no overnight) and in-home nanny care. The credit is worth 20 to 35 percent of your expenses, up to $3,000 for one dependent or $6,000 for two or more dependents, but phases out at higher levels. • The Child Tax Credit may be worth up to $1,000 per child. If you get less than the full amount because the credit eliminates your tax bill, you may qualify for the refundable Additional Child Tax Credit. • You can claim your family’s unreimbursed medical and dental expenses over 7.5 percent of your adjusted gross income as an itemized deduction. Expenses must be for the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment or prevention of disease or treatment. Premiums for medical, dental and some long-term care insurance and transportation costs may also qualify. Only prescription medications and insulin are eligible. • The Adoption Credit will cover up to $12,650 in adoption expenses paid during 2012 depending on your income. Expenses include court costs, adoption agency fees, attorney fees and travel.

• If you paid alimony in cash, you can deduct that amount even if you claim the standard deduction. If you received alimony, the IRS considers that taxable income; however, child support is not taxed. • Some education savings plans offer tax benefits. A portion of distributions and earnings from Qualified Tuition Programs and Coverdell Education Savings Accounts for education expenses are generally tax free. Up to $2,000 in annual contributions to Coverdell Savings Accounts are also tax free depending on your income level. • Have children in college? If you claim them as dependents, you may qualify for the Student Loan Interest Deduction, American Opportunity Credit or Lifetime Learning Credit. Learn more about all education tax breaks in IRS Publication 970. Learn More Details about these and other child-related tax breaks can be found at www.irs.gov and www.taxact.com.

Building Out Broadband Creates New Jobs

T

he proposed merger between AT&T and T-Mobile means good news for the economy. Together, AT&T and T-Mobile will build a network that will provide high-speed wireless Internet access to more than 97 percent of Americans, many in rural areas. Besides improving broadband availability and quality of service, the investment needed to build this network is expected to create as many as 96,000 new jobs. “Broadband deployment is a powerful job creator and will meaningfully improve the quality of life for millions of Americans,” said former Congressman Rick Boucher, Internet Innovation Alliance (IIA) honorary chairman. “There are very few steps that can be taken that would do more to help the American economy today than extending broadband service nationwide.” According to an analysis by the Economic Policy Institute (EPI), this additional infrastructure investment will result in: • Direct jobs with the carriers; • Supplier jobs with companies that provide products and services including network equipment, handset devices and software applications; and • Induced jobs as a result of the general increase in economic activity. As a result of the merger, an additional $8 billion will be invested in building out this network, resulting in 1 million more square miles of network coverage nationwide, including currently

uncovered small towns and rural areas. Better broadband access will also provide benefits to economic development—particularly small businesses, education and health care. Faster data speeds pave the way for innovation and growth. Small businesses will have the opportunity to grow their customer base, improve their day-to-day operations, create greater organizational efficiencies and increase their profits. Additionally, network expansion will benefit local businesses by enabling them to link to markets across the country and around the world, competing in the global marketplace, no matter where they are located. Increasing access to broadband will also allow students to benefit from opportunities, including advanced distancelearning applications and unique educational resources, whether from the library down the street or a university across the Atlantic Ocean. With a wireless device such as a smartphone or laptop, a student can tap into a world of online education and better reach his or her full academic potential, even in settings outside traditional classroom walls. Finally, increasing the availability of high-speed broadband Internet will give more Americans access to telemedicine, saving money and saving lives. Telemedicine helps increase patient access

to primary and specialty care, allows for remote health monitoring and, especially in rural communities, helps patients cut down on long-distance travel to and from health care facilities. Broadband expansion means better opportunities related to jobs, education and health care. --NAPSI

College Degree Required For Sixty Percent Of U.S. Jobs By 2018

A

s a new year begins, we often evaluate our lives—where we are and where we’d like to be. It’s no surprise that many Americans are making education a priority as they set their personal goals for 2012. “The unemployment rate for people who have never gone to college is more than double what it is for those who have gone to college,” says Dr. Mary Hawkins, president of Bellevue University. “And during the next 10 years, nearly eight in 10 new jobs will require workforce training or a higher education. These statistics make it clear that completing some form of higher education is the best tool to meet the challenges of a 21st century economy.” If you’re considering going back to school, chances are you’ve wondered about online learning. Is it legit? Will I get the same quality education I would in

a classroom? Will my degree be as respected as much as it would if I attended in person? The answer is, surprisingly, the same as with a traditional, in-class situation—there are varying levels of online degrees and you must do your research to find the best one for you. Here are four factors you should consider if you’re contemplating getting your degree online: 1. Just as with an in-class program, you want to make sure the institution you attend is regionally accredited. This designation is an indicator that the institution voluntarily reports on the quality of its programs and submits to assessment to ensure quality offerings. 2. Determine whether or not you must be online at a particular time each week; if you can enter the virtual classroom when it is most convenient for you. Based

on your lifestyle, decide which of these formats will best set you up for success. Maybe you have a hectic, unpredictable schedule and you need to do the work when you can fit it in. Or perhaps you are the kind of person who benefits most from a set time each week to attend class. 3. Online learning is still relatively young in higher education. Some institutions, like Bellevue University, have been offering online degree programs since the mid-‘90s. It is important to make sure the school you choose has had time to optimize its online offerings. 4. Ask if the entire degree program is offered online or if it is just one component of the larger program. Some universities require both online and in-class participation within the same program. If you are interested in this type of blended program, make sure you ask how much content is

delivered online and how much is delivered in class so that you can plan how you are going to fit the components into your life. Lastly, please know that when you reach your goal, your degree will not indicate whether you studied online or in class. You don’t need to worry about perceptions from those who still doubt online learning. What’s most important is determining if earning your degree can get you to where you want to go and if online learning is the best way to fit getting a degree into your already busy life.
