LBUQUERQUE – Albuquerque’s favorite Latina theatre troupe, Las Megananas (The Big Girls), is bringing a revival of its outstanding original production Río de Lágrimas / River of Tears to the National Hispanic Cultural Center for a limited engagement. It opens on Friday, June 29 and plays Friday and Saturday evening at 8:00 pm and Sundays at 2:00 pm in the Wells Fargo Auditorium. This trilingual (Nahuatl, English, and Spanish) multimedia performance piece, written by Soledad Marjón Hindi and scored by Vivian Fernandez, is based on the legend of La Llorona, the Wailing Woman. The piece begins in Mexico with La Malinche, Hernán Cortés’ estranged lover and the first mother of the mestizo race, whose despair over their broken relationship and the death of her children transforms her into La Llorona, roaming the Río Grande crying for the lost souls of her mestizo children. Her journey north to the Southwest ends at the U.S./Mexico border in Ciudad Juárez, where, as the archetype of a grieving mother, she mourns the mistreatment, disappearance, and death of thousands of maquiladora, or factory, workers along the border. Improvisational interludes with cello, guitar, cajón, concertina, finger harp, percussion, and songs are interwoven with the storyline. This combination of powerful subject matter and intensely beautiful music takes the audience on an emotionally charged and truly exceptional journey. Note: This production is not suitable for children under 13; attendance is at parents’ discretion. Tickets for these performances are $15 and may be purchased at the NHCC Box Office (505) 724-4771 or on line at www.nhccnm.org. The National Hispanic Cultural Center, a division of the Department of Cultural Affairs, is dedicated to the promotion and preservation of Hispanic art and culture at the local, state, national, and international levels.

C o m m e n ta r y Helping Communities Prepare For Wildfires

F

or the nearly 70,000 U.S. communities threatened by wildfires, it isn’t a matter of if, but when fire will be a natural occurrence in their ecosystem. Wildfires cost billions of dollars each year in suppression costs and damage to homes, infrastructure, the economy and resources. In addition, wildfires put both civilian and firefighter lives at risk. But there is help. The nation’s leaders in wildfire mitigation have partnered to develop Fire Adapted Communities, a prefire strategy to help communities at risk of wildfire save lives and reduce risk to homes, infrastructure and resources. The U.S. Forest Service and the National Fire Protection Association partnered with a coalition of other prominent nonprofit organizations and government agencies to create the Fire Adapted Communities initiative. The campaign website, www.Fireadapted. org, provides straightforward information on national programs, tools and funding sources to help communities at risk from wildfire prepare for fire before it starts. The program takes a community-based approach, encouraging homeowners, land managers, civic leaders and first responders to take proactive steps to make their communities fire adapted. The Ad Council has partnered with the U.S. Forest Service to help deliver the Fire Adapted Communities message nationwide. This national public service advertising campaign raises awareness that those living in fire-prone

communities must prepare in advance to mitigate wildfire damage when it occurs. The more proactive actions a community takes, the more fire adapted it becomes. Partnering to Reduce Wildfire Risk According to U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell, the campaign will help individual homeowners and communities safeguard their homes from wildfire threats. Said Tidwell, “We are pleased to partner with the Ad Council and the National Fire Protection Association to help educate communities—especially those next to wooded areas—on simple steps they can take to help protect their property and families when wildfires strike.” A History of Collaboration The campaign was created pro bono by advertising agency Draftfcb, which has worked with the Ad Council and U.S. Forest Service for more than 68 years, to address the issue of wildfire prevention with the iconic character Smokey Bear and his famous tagline “Only You Can Prevent Wildfires.” Said Peggy Conlon, president and CEO of the Ad Council, “We hope that our efforts will influence property owners and community leaders in fire-prone areas to take the necessary steps to prepare in advance of a wildfire, improving the safety and resiliency of their communities.” To learn more, visit FireAdapted.org.

C o m m e n ta r y Take Advantage Of The Benefits Of Credit Cards And Debit Cards

W

hile consumers have become savvy when it comes to managing their money, many could take greater advantage of using either a credit card or a debit card by better understanding the benefits of each. Below are considerations to help individuals choose for themselves when the benefits of using a credit card outweigh those of using a debit card, or vice versa. Benefits of Debit Cards: • Withdraw Cash When Making Purchases—Debit cards not only allow access to cash from ATMs, but also the ability to withdraw money when making a purchase. • No Balance Due at Month’s End—Charges made using a debit card are pulled directly from a checking account and not added to a credit card balance. Some consumers like the freedom of not worrying about a

balance at the end of the month and are able to better establish a monthly budget. • No Due Dates—To avoid interest charges, credit card users must pay close attention to due dates and pay off their balance. Debit cards, on the other hand, pull money from a checking account immediately, eliminating worry about when a balance will be due and any interest that could result from missing the payment due date. Benefits of Credit Cards: • Earn Rewards on Daily Purchases—Many credit cards earn rewards. And if consumers pay off their credit card when the payment is due, no interest will accrue on everyday purchases such as gas and groceries. • Building Credit History— Using a credit card responsibly may help to build good credit, which may make it easier to get loans and better interest rates.

• Funds to Make Large or Unexpected Purchases—Whether it’s a large purchase, such as new furniture, or an unexpected expense like a last-minute home repair, credit cards offer access to spending limits typically greater than one’s checking account balance. • Security Benefits—Credit cards offer the security of funds not being tied directly to a checking account, as they are with debit cards. So if fraudulent activity occurs, the funds in a checking account are not depleted. However, Fifth Third Bank’s new DUO Card, which is the first and only option available to combine the benefits and features of both a credit card and a debit card into one, allows consumers to use a debit card without sacrificing this security feature. With this card, only transactions made using a security PIN are tied directly

to a checking account (i.e., debit purchases), which adds an additional layer of protection. The decision as to when to use a credit card versus a debit card is a personal one, as there are benefits to both, and no two people manage their money in exactly the same way. With options like Fifth Third Bank’s DUO Card, these personal decisions are that much easier— with the security, convenience and flexibility of both a credit card and a debit card all in one. For more information, visit www. my53card.com/DUO or a Fifth Third Banking Center in the following states: Ohio, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and West Virginia. --NAPSI

Retirement In Need Of Reinvention

R

etirement is a concept that’s constantly being reinvented. A comfortable retirement wasn’t even a widespread economic goal until after World War II—and it’s changing again, as the economy is making that goal more difficult to reach. Fortunately, seniors do have options. According to executives at The Lifeline Program, seniors must now look well beyond traditional tools if they want some sort of retirement. For most seniors, the notion of ending their work life at age 65 with a golf course membership and a gold watch is no longer the norm. Recent studies show that most seniors are working longer with little hope of an idyllic retirement. Traditional sources of retirement income can no longer be relied on. Pensions have become rare and many seniors have not saved enough. The recession and housing crash have hurt retirement accounts and housing values. Financial-planning experts suggest saving more, but that’s not always possible. Other options do exist, though, and it’s important to do your research. For example, performing a reverse mortgage on a home, selling a life insurance policy through a life settlement and exploring alternative investments are all tactics that can

add financial security and help seniors realize some of their dreams for retirement. For Joan Clary (age 70), a substitute schoolteacher from Oakhurst, Calif., the dream was to meet actress Betty White. Fortunately, Clary won the recent Lifeline “Meet Betty White” Facebook contest and was flown to Los Angeles to meet the actress. Clary was thrilled to win. “As I

turn 70, I realize Betty is one of my last role models. It’s a joy to meet her after admiring her for so many years,” said Clary. Founded in 1989, The Lifeline Program offers life settlements as a new financial planning option to baby boomers and retirees. The company partners with insurance agents, broker dealers and financial planners to establish life settlement business lines. For

Improving A Home’s Value And Curb Appeal

S

elling a house in today’s market can be a challenge. The solution may be to think outside the box—or, in this case, outside the structure. In the past, a little paint and some minor renovations might have done the trick, but with so many homes for sale, homeowners are finding interesting new ways to boost curb appeal and buyer interest. While steps such as cleaning up and investing in some landscapes can still deliver results, more homeowners are attracting buyer interest with a system of exterior insulation known as “Outsulation®.” Exterior insulation has been shown to lower energy bills and raise buyer interest. Susan Malone of Warwick, Rhode Island, used Outsulation by Dryvit to replace the drab clapboard on her home with a new stonelike exterior complete with architectural flourishes and decorative window accents. The makeover raised her appraisal value and attracted new buyers. “The transformation of my home has been nothing short of amazing-both from the standpoint of how much more beautiful it is and the effect the renovation had on increasing the value of my home. I have been able to save so much money on my energy bills,” said Malone. She used Outsulation by Dryvit, which lets you create an entirely new image. It can

be adhesively or mechanically fastened over a building code−approved water-resistive barrier to plywood or OSB substrate. The system offers the look of any traditional finish, including brick, limestone, stucco and stone, plus three-dimensional details like arches, window borders, decorative columns and

dramatic doorways. Besides improving the way it looks, such exterior insulation makes a home more energy efficient. It reduced air leakage in Malone’s home by 19 percent—the equivalent of closing up a hole in the wall that would be the size of a soccer ball, or of leaving your front door open for 25 minutes every day. The Outsulation system reduced Malone’s energy bills by 35 percent and helped dampen noise. “My dogs used to wake me up barking at just about any noise they would hear, including the airplanes constantly coming and going over the house,” said Malone, who lives in a fly zone. “But since the renovation, the dogs don’t hear all the sounds they used to, so we are all getting a lot more sleep.” For more information, call (800) 556-7752; in Canada, call (800) 263-3308; or visit www. dryvithomes.com.

Act Now For Tax Savings Later

T

he average American must work 107 days to earn enough to pay federal, state and local taxes in 2012. Although nearly 30 percent of our wages go to taxes, many Americans do little in the way of tax planning. Tax planning involves reviewing tax benefits and implications of your income, expenditures, investments and retirement plans. How can you maximize the benefits of each in the most tax-efficient way? Planning may also include taking a close look at your income tax return. “It’s never too late for tax planning,” said TaxACT spokesperson Jessi Dolmage. “There are things you can do anytime of year to maximize your tax savings. But the earlier you start, the better.” Dolmage shares several ideas for your tax planning checklist this year and every year: • Review your retirement plan. Can you contribute more in order to decrease your taxable income? If you don’t have a retirement plan, consider starting a 401(k) or IRA. If you want to start an IRA, remember the

After 2012, the exemption will drop to $1 million, taxed at 55 percent. Dolmage warns taxpayers to be prepared for last-minute tax law changes. “Seventy-seven tax breaks expired at the end of 2011,” said Dolmage. “Congress will likely extend many of them after the presidential election, but we’re not sure when.
