Albuquerque Convention Center to Receive $20 Million in Renovations

A

lbuquerque, NM – The Albuquerque Convention Center is about to get a $20 million facelift. The Albuquerque Convention and Visitors Bureau (ACVB) is pleased to announce that the West Complex of the Albuquerque Convention Center will soon have a new look that better represents the unique architectural elements of our region. The City of Albuquerque has selected Dekker/Perich/Sabatini, a local architecture firm, to develop a design that better reflects Albuquerque’s history, art, culture and environment. The preliminary designs include a new exterior façade, complete remodeling of the ballroom, a new entertainment deck in the ballroom, massive windows with panoramic views, the west building lower level atrium will be completely remodeled to include a fireplace, and a lower level food court/café. In addition to the $20 million being invested in the Albuquerque Convention Center, more than $200 million has been invested in upgrades and renovations at hotel and meeting facilities across the city in recent years. “We are pleased to see the City of Albuquerque’s exciting new improvements to our Convention

The project will be phased to allow for ongoing convention and meeting business. Construction is slated to start by mid-2013 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2014.

New Mexico’s State Fossil: The Little Dinosaurs of Ghost Ranch

A

lbuquerque, NM, July 12, 2012 –there once lived a little dinosaur who was a bird-like hunter. Though little, its teeth would have torn right through …well, just about anything! It was as vicious as any other meat-eating dinosaur and ran down small game on the river floodplains that covered New Mexico during the Late Triassic – about 205 million years ago. The first little guy was discovered near Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu, New Mexico in 1881 and was named Coelophysis years later. Further discoveries of this small creature continued throughout the last century, and the discoveries were so significant to the state of New Mexico that in 1981 it was dubbed “the official state fossil”. Coelophysis opens on July 21, 2012 as part of Dinosaur Century: 100 Years of Discovery in New Mexico at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science. The Discoveries In 1881, while on the hunt for dinosaur fossils,

David Baldwin discovered a handful of fossil bones in the red dirt and rocks of Abiquiu, New Mexico. The bones were studied for years in Philadelphia and, in 1889, were named Coelophysis by paleontologist Edward Drinker Cope. In 1947, paleontologist Edwin H. Colbert led a New York team from the American Museum of Natural History to Baldwin’s site. 66 years after Baldwin’s original discovery, a bonebed packed with thousands of dinosaur skeletons was discovered by one of the New York team members, George Whitaker. Over the next few years, hundreds of skeletons were collected. This discovery made Coelophysis one of the best known of any early dinosaur. Because the discovery of Coelophysis was so significant, the New Mexico State Legislature declared Coelophysis the official state fossil of New Mexico in 1981. That same year, a team from the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, led by David S Berman, reopened the Ghost Ranch bonebed and

collected even more Coelophysis skeletons. One of the fossil blocks they collected was given to the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science. And the Discoveries Continue In 1998, a California Fire Fighter decided to vacation near Ghost Ranch. While on a hike, he noticed fossil bone sticking out of an arroyo wall. Intrigued by his discovery, he brought the discovery to Andrew Heckert, a scientist working at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science. Heckert traveled to the locality with Snyder and determined that an extensive bonebed lay buried in the Triassic bedrock. Over the next decade, the Museum excavated the site, recovering thousands of Late Triassic fossils. The locality came to be known as the Snyder Quarry and is still an active field site today. Come see it all at Dinosaur Century: 100 Years of Discovery in New Mexico, only at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science.

Warning Lights Send Messages You Can’t Ignore Safety on the road is no accident. For example, when a warning light illuminates on a car’s dashboard, it is alerting you to a situation that requires your attention. While not all warning lights are a sign that disaster is imminent, no warning indicator should ever be ignored. That’s the word from the experts at AAA, who encourage motorists to read their owner’s manual and know what each of the warning lights in their vehicle means. To help, they offer the following tips: Oil Pressure Light The oil pressure light is usually an oilcan symbol or the word “OIL.” It comes on when there is a drop in engine oil pressure. Of all the warning lights, the oil pressure light indicates the greatest potential for serious mechanical damage. If the oil pressure warning light comes on and stays on, pull off the road at the earliest safe opportunity, shut off the engine and call for assistance. Engine Temperature Light The engine temperature light is usually a thermometer symbol or the word “TEMP.” It comes on when the engine temperature is unsafe for your vehicle. Unless the engine temperature is quickly brought under control, major damage may occur. If there are any signs of a cooling system leak,

pull off the road at the earliest safe opportunity, shut off the engine and call for assistance. Be careful when opening the hood in the presence of steam, and never remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot. Charging System Light The charging system light is usually a battery symbol or the word “ALT” or “GEN.” It comes on when the vehicle electrical system is no longer being supplied power by the alternator. If this light comes on, shut down all unnecessary electrical loads such as the radio,

heater or air-conditioning, then drive the vehicle to a repair facility immediately for further inspection. Check Engine Light The check engine light comes on when there is a problem affecting the vehicle’s exhaust emissions. If the light comes on and stays on, make an appointment with an auto repair shop to have the problem checked in the near future. However, if the check engine light begins flashing repeatedly, the catalytic converter is over-heating. Should this occur, drive the vehicle to a repair shop immediately for further diagnosis. Disregarding a flashing check engine light could start a fire, destroy the catalytic converter and result in necessary repairs that could easily exceed $1,000. To learn more, visit www.AAA. com or call (800) AAA-HELP. To locate an AAA Approved Auto Repair shop, visit www.AAA. com/repair.

Five Web Tips For Every Small Business Owner

mall business owners have to juggle multiple responsibilities and watch the bottom line. Although many turn to the web for marketing help and for services to run more smoothly, knowing some tips and tricks on how to better use these tools can make a big difference in terms of time, money and headaches saved. David Friend, who was recognized by Ernst & Young as one of New England’s Entrepreneurs of the Year, shares five tips to help owners be smart with their online efforts and their business. 1. Use social media platforms to connect with your customers. Whether it’s Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn or Pinterest, these channels are quick ways to remind your customers of your offerings. Post regularly to stay top of mind; sharing an update once a week will keep your followers engaged. 2. Listen with your eyes. Online review sites, from Angie’s List to Yelp, give people a number of ways to voice their opinions. Monitor these sites regularly to see what customers are saying about your business. And know the dynamic isn’t

just one way. You can use this as an opportunity to gracefully accept compliments or tactfully respond to criticism; however be careful not to engage in an argument. 3. You’ve got mail. In today’s fast-paced times, consumers may find it easier to send an email instead of calling with a question or inquiry. Try to respond quickly, which will show customers that you care about them and that you are able to help them with any issues. A quick answer can improve overall customer satisfaction. 4. Beware of data thieves. With more business conducted online than ever before, cyber security should be top of mind. To protect your data, do not open suspicious emails, use strong passwords, and make sure your anti-virus and antimalware signature database is up to date. 5. Make sure you’re protected. Results from a recent study by Carbonite revealed that small businesses have big gaps in their data backup plans, which puts them at risk for losing valuable information in the instance of power outage, hard drive failure or even a virus.

In fact, the study showed that small businesses continue to choose risky and unreliable technologies: • 50 percent use external hard drives, yet 40 percent didn’t start backing up until they experienced a hard drive failure. • 42 percent use USB/flash drives primarily because it is perceived as easy, yet only 6 percent believe USB/flash drives are actually reliable. • More than one-third use CDs/ DVD drives to back up data, even though 62 percent feel they are inconvenient or risky. Just like seat belts and insurance, you may only appreciate online backup after it’s too late. However, its implementation is very easy and cost effective. It gives business owners peace of mind and more time to focus on the matters at hand. Online backup services such as Carbonite offer an affordable and reliable way for small businesses to back up their data, plus there’s a 30-day free trial on its website www.carbonite.com.

Surprising Ways To Add To Your Savings by John A. Addison Jr.

L

earning to be more of a “saver” than a “spender” can often start with small steps that take you in a new direction and help you to acquire new habits. If you struggle with finding money to save, here are some ideas you may have overlooked: • Put aside your loose change each day. Saving just $1 a day will yield you $365 in a year. • Cut your phone bills. For less than $10, you can buy a prepaid cell phone and pay only by the minute. Unless you have medical issues that can require emergency calls, you may even want to consider canceling your land line. • Do your best to avoid unnecessary bank fees. For instance, by avoiding bounced checks, overdrafts and ATM fees, the $20−$40 you normally spend each month could save you $240 to $480 each year. • Bring lunch to work. Spend $2 a day on making lunch at home instead of eating out for $5 a day, and before you know it you’ve saved $780 in one year. • Track your spending. You might not realize where your money is going. Keep

a receipt for everything you spend in one month. At the end of the month, separate them into categories. This process can often help you see where you can trim excess spending without radically changing your lifestyle. Many people find that entertainment and dining out are two areas where modest cuts can lead to significant savings over time. To learn more, visit www. primerica.com.
