Historic Czech Torah Part of Peace Curriculum at the Holocaust & Intolerance Museum of New Mexico
A
LBUQUERQUE - A Czechoslovakian Torah from the Czech Memorial Scroll Trust & Museum in London is on display at the Holocaust & Intolerance Museum of New Mexico as part of an educational initiative promoting peace. The Torah is one of 1,564 Scrolls, and other Jewish artifacts, salvaged from historic Czech synagogues left destroyed and deserted following the Nazi invasion during World War II. In 1942, members of Prague’s Jewish community devised a way to bring the religious treasures from the deserted provincial communities to the comparative safety of Prague. The Nazis were persuaded to accept this plan and more than 100,000 items were sent to the Central Jewish Museum in Prague. Among them were hundreds of Torah Scrolls. Each was meticulously recorded on a card index by the museum’s staff with a description of the Scroll and the place from which it came. In 1964, the Torah Scrolls were transferred to Westminster Synagogue in London. After months of sorting, examining and cataloguing each Scroll, the task of distributing them began with the aim of returning them to Jewish congregations worldwide. The Memorial Scrolls Trust was established to carry this out. Over the years the racks have grown vacant as one Scroll after another is restored to its rightful place in Jewish life. Currently, there are about 1,400 Scrolls housed all over the world. Now the only Scrolls available for distribution are those that are returned for a variety of reasons. Congregation B’nai Israel in Albuquerque obtained its Torah several years ago and has agreed to lend it to Holocaust & Intolerance Museum of New Mexico. The Torah will be the centerpiece in a curriculum aimed at educating young people about the Holocaust and combating hatred. “This is a way to remind ourselves as to what happened,” said Congregation B’nai Israel President Harvey Buchalter. “This is a Torah that once served a congregation that is no more. We’ve reclaimed some part of Czech Jewry that goes back 2,000 years.” Museum official agree. “If we do not learn from the inhumanities of the past and present, these brutal injustices will continue worldwide,” said Jerry Small, museum co-

president. “People, especially young people, must not only be aware of this, but also understand it and become active in promoting peace.” The Torah and curriculum will be available until April 2013 at the New Mexico Holocaust & Intolerance Museum at 616 Central Ave. SW, in Albuquerque. Help Your Heart And More
lthough heart disease is the cause of one in four deaths in America today, you don’t have to be a part of those statistics. A Fruitful Solution A simple citrus fruit, bergamot, can help. It contains antioxidants to protect cells from oxidative stress and neutralize free radicals. Research on bergamot extract published in peerreviewed journals showed: • Reductions in total cholesterol of approximately 30 percent; • Reductions in LDL (bad) cholesterol of 38 percent; • Reductions in triglycerides of up to 40 percent; • Increases in HDL (good) cholesterol of up to 42 percent; • Reductions in blood sugar of between 20 and 30 percent.
Although bitter in taste, the patented extract of the fruit makes it easier to take and helps target cholesterol, blood pressure, blood glucose and abdominal obesity, the major components of metabolic syndrome, also known as prediabetes. This affects about 35 percent of the U.S. population, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Called BergaMet MEGA, this all-natural dietary supplement also helps support weight management when paired with a healthy diet and exercise. Explained cardiologist Ross Walker, M.D., “We’re talking about ‘diabesity,’ which represents all of the problems of metabolic syndrome rolled into one. The multiple properties of the bergamot fruit allow it to work at many levels in cardiovascular prevention.” According to one cardiologist, who purchased
450 bottles of BergaMet Pro, he is seeing benefits in lipid levels and significant weight loss in just seven weeks. Learn More You can find further facts and order a supply at www.bergamet.com and (855) 556-2131. --NAPSI

Switching To Safety
A
s you contemplate retirement-something that’s a good idea to do at any age—it may pay for you to adopt new financial habits and invest in a high-yield savings account. It’s a smart way to diversify your portfolio and reduce your overall risk, which can be a big plus—especially in an uncertain financial climate. What You Get Other important benefits include: • Peace of mind. One of the safest investment vehicles is a high-yield savings account. Your savings are fully insured by the FDIC up to at least $250,000--even if the bank that holds your account fails. In fact, since the formation of the FDIC in 1934, no insured depositor with an account within the FDIC insurance limit has ever lost money as the result of a bank failure. • Liquidity. High-yield savings accounts are one of the most liquid investment vehicles, providing you with easy access to your money. • No maintenance fees. An increasing number of savings vehicles, including high-yield savings accounts, don’t impose monthly service fees, provided you maintain a specified minimum balance in your accounts. Look for a savings account with no fees so all your money can keep working for you. • Earnings. Not all savings accounts are high-
yield savings accounts. As the term suggests, high-yield accounts offer higher interest rates than conventional savings accounts. That makes them an effective long-term investment vehicle as well as a means of establishing an emergency fund. For example, the CIT Bank Savings account offers competitive interest rates and, like most high-yield accounts, is available online. What The Banker Says Explains Raymond Quinlan, executive vice president, banking, CIT Group Inc., the parent company of CIT Bank: “Since the launch of CIT Bank’s online bank, our mission has been

to provide our customers with the highest level of service, security and reliability.” That commitment, he adds, “is in keeping with the values that have been CIT Group’s hallmark for more than a century.” Award Winner CIT Bank has been awarded five stars in Bankrate.com’s Safe & Sound Ratings service for the quarter ended July 31, 2012, the highest possible rating, for “a superior ranking of relative strength and stability.” Bankrate’s Safe & Sound ratings are comparisons to both industry peer norms and standards. Individual performance levels are determined from publicly available regulatory filings and are compared to asset-size peer norms, industry standards and key absolute benchmarks.

Tips To Help You Keep Life In Balance
W
hile rewarding, helping out an aging loved one can be stressful and present feelings of frustration. Do you drive your mother to doctors’ appointments? Are you managing medicine for your grandfather? Have you had a parent move in with you? Whether your help is hands-on or offering support, assistance and guidance from a distance, you aren’t alone. You’re far from it. It’s estimated that there are 42.1 million family caregivers in America facing similar challenges. Connecting with other caregivers who know what it’s like to care for a loved one and joining communities of those with similar experiences can offer great support in a difficult time. AARP’s new Caregiving Resource Center is a great starting point to join an online community of caregivers and connect with information, resources and advice. Whether you’re caring for your mother who lives 20 minutes away or for your in-laws living across the country, the Caregiving Resource Center offers tips for caring for your loved ones, both near and far: Balancing Work and Caregiving at Home • Learn your company policies—Talk to your Human Resources Department or manager to learn about your company’s policies regarding caregiving. Some companies offer programs to help find
A
services, support groups or flexible work arrangements. • Know your rights—Learn about the Family and Medical Leave Act, which entitles eligible workers to unpaid leaveup to 12 weeks a year-for family caregiving without losing job security or health benefits. • Talk to your manager—Let your manager know about your role as a caregiver and what it requires of you. Caring From Afar • Create a contact list—Put together a list for yourself and your loved one of addresses and phone numbers of those who can be reached in an emergency: friends, neighbors, doctors or other family members who have regular contact with your loved one. • Organize information—No one wants to think about emergencies, but it’s always better to be prepared. Collect and keep handy important information before a crisis. You might even consider an electronic health record-such as the AARP Health Record—to manage critical information. Keep handy medical records, medications, doctor names and numbers, insurance information, names of utility companies, financial information and important documents including birth certificates, Social Security cards and home deeds. • Make visits productive—Time with
your loved one should be enjoyable but it’s also a great opportunity to assess possibly changing needs. Make a list of things to take care of before you arrive, including scheduling appointments in advance or making shopping lists. When you’re there, note anything out of the ordinary and look around the house for safety hazards. • Community services—Look into community services that may provide support and assistance. Tips To Help You Save Hundreds Of Dollars
ccording to the American Research Group, Americans spend an average of $646 on holiday gifts a year, and that’s not including what they spend on the rest of their holiday trimmings. It can be challenging to have cash left in your pocket at the end of the holidays, but employing a variety of strategies can help your bank account stay in the black while you deck the halls with the red and green. Here are hints that can help: • Use coupons. In addition to the ones in the paper, a helpful place to find them can be CouponCabin.com, with its thousands of coupons for online and in-store use at everywhere from large retailers to small, independently owned businesses. The site’s wide variety of guaranteedto-work coupons means you’ll be able to save money no matter what your plans are this holiday season. • Lower your smartphone plan: Almost everyone who has a smartphone loves it, which means they use it all the time. But what if you could give up some of your services for just a few months? Try going back to the basics and keeping phone use to a minimum to save nearly $50 over the several weeks. • Go cable free: Holidays are typically the busiest times of the year, leaving little time for TV watching. Get rid of the extra cost for cable and save as much as $100. • Switch up your workout routine: Consider swapping a pricey gym membership for outdoor exercise or mall walking in rough weather. Depending on your membership fees, you could save as much as $100 per month. • Raise your deductibles: Be extra careful this season and increase the deductibles on your car and home insurance policies. Going from a $250 to a $1,000 deductible could mean a savings of around $100. • Sell stuff: Before you fill your closets with even more stuff, take a quick inventory of items you already own and don’t use. Consider holding
a garage sale or auctioning or selling your items online to easily put $50 or more in your pocket. • Haggle away: A recent study from Consumer Reports found that those who asked for a discount got one nearly 80 percent of the time. Put your negotiating skills to the test and you could save an extra $50 or more for the holidays. In addition, you can be the very first to know about the latest and greatest coupons out there with the new Coupon Newsflash, a constantly updated stream of available coupons gathered and shared by top savings experts all day, every day. From TVs and restaurants to diapers and shoes, with Newsflash (www.couponcabin.com/ newsflash), you never miss a great deal. • Learn more.
