t’s always best to plan in advance. Thelma Duggin, a former health industry CEO, knew this to be true in business and in life, but when it came to the life of her mother Elizabeth, advance planning was a pretty tough sell. Elizabeth was in her late 80s at the time and living alone in her Alabama home. Duggin sensed that her mother could use help doing light chores around the house. Her greatest concern, however, centered on Elizabeth’s overall care as she continued to age. Fortunately for Duggin, she had access to a program called Solutions for Caregivers, available through her workplace’s employee assistance program, that has nurses assess a family’s situation and needs, develop a care plan and discuss recommendations with the

Preparing For The Future whole family. Duggin and her siblings, none of whom live in Alabama, arranged for Solutions for Caregivers to develop a care plan for Elizabeth. She was assigned a case manager named Kathy Hawk to work directly with Elizabeth at her home. The way Duggin saw it, “It’s better to do this before they need it.” But there was an issue. “Mom did not want it,” Duggin said. It turned out this simple step helped the whole family outpace a series of potential problems. When an illness placed Elizabeth in the hospital, she asked to receive care from her former physician. Kathy filled out the paperwork to enable that to happen. Elizabeth’s condition required her to receive care at a skilled nursing facility;
Kathy rated different facilities and found one that most closely met Elizabeth’s needs. She took the reins when Elizabeth developed diabetes and, later, a blood clot. “It comes down to peace of mind for your loved one,” said Duggin. “You feel totally comfortable and confident. Kathy will pick up on things when she talks to our mother that we won’t. It’s been a lifesaver.” Now 91, Elizabeth remains active and actively involved with her family. This past Thanksgiving, Thelma Duggin, her two sisters and brother took Elizabeth to Jamaica, after getting Kathy’s OK. “Kathy did everything,” Duggin said. “[She located a] cardiologist, gave us a list of what to do, got [Elizabeth’s] glucose readings and blood tests. It’s almost like somebody is doing everything for you and you have the confidence that it will get done
right.” Elizabeth now resides in assisted living. She talks with Kathy weekly and Kathy sends the family a weekly report. You can learn more at www. WhatIsSolutionsForCaregivers.com or by calling (877) 765-4473. (NAPSI)—

Make Sure Your Lights Shine Bright
M
aking sure your headlights are in proper working order should be a top priority before any road trip—whether you are going on an afternoon drive or heading off for vacation. “Lights play a major role in safe driving, as the chance of an accident increases if you can’t see or be seen,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. Lights are normal-wear items that require periodic inspection and replacement. The lighting system provides nighttime visibility, signals and alerts other drivers, and supplies light for viewing instruments and the vehicle’s interior. From the driver’s seat, you may not notice a light that isn’t working, so be sure to inspect your car’s lights at every oil change. At the same time, inspect and replace wiper blades so you can see clearly when driving during rain showers. In addition to replacing dimming, rapidly blinking and non-functioning lights, the following tips can help keep you safe: • Keep headlights, taillights and signal lights clean. External dirt and debris can dim operational lights from being seen by others. • Make sure that your headlights are properly aimed. Mis-aimed headlights blind other drivers and reduce your ability to see the road.
• Don’t overdrive your headlights. You should be able to stop inside the illuminated area; otherwise, you are creating a blind crash area in front of your vehicle. • If there is any doubt about whether or not your headlights should be on, turn them on. Lights not only help you see better in early twilight, they also make it easier for other drivers to see you.
About the Car Care Council The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign, promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. The Indian Pueblo Cultural Center to Open New Exhibition Reflecting Upon a Century of Changes, Traditions and Values of Pueblo People
A
lbuquerque, NM (January 19, 2012) – On February 4, 2012, the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center will open its new, “100 Years of State & Federal Policy: The Impact on Pueblo Nations,” an examination of the human experience behind enacted policies and laws that have changed and affected the core values of the pueblo people. While written “Indian” policies date back as far as the mid-1700s, this exhibition will look at federal and state policies from 1912 to 2012 that have had positive and negative impacts on the Pueblo tribes. Among the 33 key policies that will be examined are: The 1970 Return of Taos Pueblo Blue Lake – a congressional action that restored 48,000 acres of sacred worship grounds back to the Taos Pueblo that had been taken away from them by the U.S. government in 1906; and the 1924 Indian Citizenship Act (or Snyder Act), granting legal citizenship to America’s indigenous people; and the 1948 New Mexico constitutional change giving American Indians the right to vote; and the 2006 Native American Languages Preserva-
tion Act which authorizes funding for programs for tribes to use to prevent the loss of heritage and culture. “Very few people in this country and perhaps in the world, know to what degree Pueblo people have been impacted through policies conceived by the United States in ways that really threaten one of the oldest indigenous communities in this world.” said Regis Pecos (Cochiti Pueblo), co-director of the Leadership Institute at the Santa Fe Indian School. “There’s just hundreds of different kinds of policy actions that have taken place that have really driven who we have become nowadays and it also drives us to really take a look at our core values again to really see from whence we came and perhaps from whence we need to return.” said Ron Solimon (Laguna Pueblo), the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center’s executive director. Visitors will be presented with intimate interviews with contemporary pueblo people reflecting on how they are living the core values of love, faith, compassion, service and community today. Pueblo youth have also weighed in their thoughts about how they
will meet historic and future challenges for themselves and for their communities in the next 100 years. A large conclave of Pueblo educators, linguists, health representatives and leaders from the northern and southern pueblo tribes assisted in developing the exhibition’s public programming and educational component for first to 12th grade. The curriculum references state standards and will be released in early March 2012. Study guides for teachers will be available online at http://indianpueblo.org/100years The year’s panel discussion schedule is online now beginning with “Changing Roles: Women in Leadership, Health, Education and Art on March 14. The exhibition will include an interactive media component and throughout the year, updated interviews and lecture podcasts will be placed online as well. A short video about the 100 years exhibition is available online at http:// indianpueblo.org/100years/. “This special exhibition is only the beginning in a larger vision to help in the planning and development of a new permanent exhibition called, The Pueblo Experi-
ence.” said Ron Solimon. 100 Years is supported by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, New Mexico Humanities Council and in-kind support from our Pueblo community members, and the New Mexico Centennial Foundation. The School for Advanced Research http://sarweb.org/index. php and the Leadership Institute http://www.sfis.k12.nm.us/leadership_institute both located in Santa Fe, also contributed and collaborated on the exhibition and post exhibition continuing education. 100 Years Project Director, Travis Suazo (Laguna/Acoma/Taos Pueblos) said, “This is a great opportunity to be part of Pueblo Indian history. This historic exhibition is being initiated from a tribal museum, from our Pueblo Indian perspective to educate and inspire. It’s our contribution to the New Mexico Centennial celebration.” The exhibition will be unveiled at 2 pm on February 4, 2012 after a short introductory program that begins at 1 pm. The Indian Pueblo Cultural Center is owned and operated by the 19 Pueblo tribes of New Mexico and is located at 2401 12th St. NW in Albuquerque.
