Where is Fight Town?

You might not know the story behind the paper you are reading right now. It all started with a passion and a chance meeting with a well-known New Mexico fighter. I started KNUXX in 2009 with the idea of making a line of fight wear that appealed to those seeking “aggressive outerwear”. I made a few shirts and realized quickly that everyone with a brain was trying to do the same thing. So I shelved the idea for awhile.

Fast forward a couple of years and I decide to start a publishing company in Albuquerque, Defined Publishing, which specializes in nichepapers - those papers that serve small, targeted groups.

Working closely with many of the great people and organizations in the community, I am invited to attend an appreciation breakfast for members of the Albuquerque Hispano Chamber of Commerce.

It was at this meeting that I met Damacio Page. He might not remember the event but it was a pivotal moment in my business.

At the time of this meeting I had only one publication, Tidbits of Albuquerque, which is a paper full of fun facts, games, puzzles, trivia and tidbits of information - it’s designed to entertain people while they wait yet remain “family friendly”. In speaking with Damacio I found that he really cares about the community and feels strongly that fighting, for some young people in NM, is the only way to pick themselves up out of ugly situations. I was fascinated by his passion, conviction, and story of how he did just that. I wanted badly to interview him and run an article in Tidbits about the fight community in NM and how it’s becoming a career choice for many of our youth. But it just wasn’t the right type of article for Tidbits.

Prior to this chance meeting I was merely a Professional Couch Fighter - meaning I watched fights and thought about what I would do if I were brave enough to step into the octagon or ring. I realized that New Mexico, and specifically Albuquerque, is fast becoming the MMA Mecca – and always has been for the classical combat sports like boxing and martial arts. So I resurrected KNUXX, but this time I decided that I would fuel my passion, and the passion of the NM fight community, with a fighting and training publication.

Tools for Your Roc Body

From Fat to P.H.A.T. As the weather warms up, the clothes get shorter and much less. But are we ready to put on that pair of shorts, or that tank top, and walk with confidence about our wonderful Albuquerque streets? Each year, I get so many “quick fix” questions about how we can at least look good on our vacations or strolling around on summer nights. So let me go over briefly what we all can do that will not only help transform your physique but also boost your confidence.

Training: Change up your training by adding super sets and increase reps by 2-5. Decrease your rest time by doing a set of abdominals between sets and exercises. A tight core is not only sexy but beneficial to your posture and symmetry.

Cardio: Stop being lazy and do some. Now I am not a big believer in hours of cardio. Hey, I believe if you have time for 2 hours on the treadmill, then you’re neglecting something or someone else in your life, maybe even yourself.

Your best time to do cardio is upon waking for 20-30 min. If timing is difficult, then you can do 25 minutes post training.

Diet: There are so many diets and diet changes that one can do. I recommend staying away from drastic changes. Many will go directly to low carbs or low calories. As much as the initial change will occur, you are sacrificing hard earned muscles and a pleasant personality that many love you for. Instead change slowly, stop eating out, eat more fruits between meals if hungry, drink more water and eat at evenly spaced times. STOP SNACKING even if they are “Healthy Snacks!”

Supplements: OMG, here is where many want me to say that company “so-n-so” is the best.

Well I am fortunate to be sponsored by MRI and so I have access to many supplements. But what about you and how did I do it before I became someone in this industry?

Coffee: I recommend a cup first thing upon waking, wait 15 min then do your morning cardio. Caffeine boosts your ability to train; it increases metabolic rate, and is a healthy diuretic.

Green Tea: I usually have my clients drink 10 oz of green tea with 2 meals. The active compound in green tea is EGCG which blocks an enzyme that breaks down norepinephrine allowing greater epinephrine release stimulating fat burning. Hey the energy is great also.

Whey Hydrolysate: Yes I ask my clients to switch once more from whey isolate to hydrolysate. The protein has again been broken down into smaller protein molecules and peptides making them easier and quicker to digest.

Reread “Whey to Go” in last months issue for more info. Use post-training and to increase glycogen stores, mix with Gatorade.

Smile More: Is this a joke??? NO, science has proven that increased laughter and smiling has a positive effect on the body and its hormonal responses. I always ask my clients to stop watching the news, watch more “Seinfeld” or more comedy movies, increase your Sexercise with your willing partner or spouse, as the decrease in cortisone will provide a greater fat burning environment, not to mention make you “Smile More”... just sayin!!!

Duke City Showdown June 10, 2011 Albuquerque, NM Chalk-up another victory for “The Preacher’s Daughter” Holly Holm, 30-1-3 out of Albuquerque, NM, in her rematch against Victoria “La Reina” Cisneros, 5-12-2, also of Albuquerque, NM. Cisneros had been pushing for a rematch ever since her first bout against Holm in December 2009, which Holm won by decision after 10 rounds. Cisneros got her wish, and the two went toe-to-toe for another 10 rounds at the Duke City Showdown, June 10, 2011, at the Legends Theater in Route 66 Casino Hotel in Albuquerque, NM. Suffice it to say, the Preacher’s Daughter delivered a non-verbal sermon on boxing.

Joaquin Zamora, 18-4-1 of Santa Fe, NM, met Elco “The Animal” Garcia 25-7 of Ignacio, CO, in another long-awaited middleweight rematch that could have also served as a spectacular main event. The two first met in 2004, while Zamora was still relatively new to the sport, and Garcia won the match with a TKO in the 6th round. Zamora won the 13 fights he had since that time and was anxious to test himself against “The Animal” again. The fight began with Zamora as the aggressor, controlling the center of the ring, and delivering a beautiful overhand left-right jab combination that rocked Garcia in the first round. However, the 2nd round saw the deceptively calm Garcia deliver a nasty uppercut that rocked Zamora and another combo that opened a cut on his eyebrow and nearly closed that eye. The 3rd round saw 2 official knockdowns by Garcia, and twice Zamora was knocked out of the ropes. Fans thought it was all over at that point, but the plucky Zamora threw himself back into the fight with a vengeance, and the 4th and 5th round looked good for him, until he was knocked down again at the end of the 5th. By the 7th and 8th round of the fight, Zamora was looking more fresh than he did in the 3rd, and it looked like he may have had a couple knockdowns, had Garcia not held himself up in the clinch with Zamora. Although Zamora clearly won the last 2 rounds, it was not enough to make up for the damage done in the first 5, and Garcia took the fight by unanimous decision.

Fidel “Atrisco Kid” Maldonado, undefeated in his pro junior welterweight career with a record of 11-0, with 10 of those wins by KO, took on late replacement Eddie Ramirez 6-8-1 out of San Antonio, TX. Maldonado showed everyone in attendance just why he is considered the next possible world champion to come out of New Mexico. Although the bout was plagued with a few mocking antics by the somewhat arrogant Maldonado, he did dominate each round with unbelievably quick, powerful jabs, and body-rocking hooks. Ramirez kept his chin down and weathered that storm for three rounds, gamely working to try to return some of the damage, but at 1:37 of the 4th round, Maldonado backed him into a corner and teed off, and finally the referee stopped the match, giving Maldonado the TKO. Marc Salser 12-0, out of Mansfield, OH, met Joel Vargas, 3-4-1 from Dodge City, KS for the welterweight match of the night. The two went six rounds, the shorter Salser crouching deeply in his defense against the dancing Vargas. Although Vargas stayed on his toes and controlled the ring much of the time, Salser picked his shots like a painter dotting a canvas, landing most with painful accuracy. Vargas did back Salser into the corner a time or two, teeing off, but Salser defended himself, and hooked his way out. The final ten seconds were thrilling, with each boxer leaving everything they had in the ring; however, Salser clearly earned the unanimous decision and kept his undefeated standing.

Many of us here in New Mexico are familiar with the name Los Vatos, a premier sportswear company, selling fight gear and sponsoring fighters for the last 15 years. What some of you may not know is Los Vatos owner (and Valley High School wrestling coach), Ronnie Huizar, started Team Los Vatos about 10 years ago, along with Jim Burlsen (KOTC, Desert Extreme) and Ronnie Duran (US Marine boxer / kickboxer), with the primary goal of getting kids off the streets and keeping them out of trouble.

From training in Socorro, to opening a gym in his garage, Ronnie and his team had at one time about 50 students, until a tragic fire took away almost everything they’d worked toward. However, with the fighter’s spirit they all possess, they have rebuilt the gym in the 4 years since the fire, gearing it specifically toward a chosen few, limiting enrollment in order to ensure optimum time and focus on each fighter.

Pro boxer Willie Villanueva and, making his pro boxing debut, Martin Gonzales, represented Team Los Vatos at the Duke City Showdown at Route 66 Casino Legends Theater on June 10, 2011. Willie Villanueva, now a 10-3 professional boxer, has had quite the journey to get where he is today. Training in karate from the time he was 6 years old, he went to Chavez for most of his youth, earning 3 state championships as well as the 2003 NM Golden Gloves.

He then transferred to Danny Romero in a somewhat controversial move, in which camp he was unable to lock down a victory. After some heartto-heart discussion with Ronnie Huizar, he came to train with Team Los Vatos. Since then, his team has him eating right, training harder, focusing on technique and conditioning. He feels more than ready to take on all fighters and was prepared to go the distance and take on David Proa, winning the decision in a six round battle that came at the end of the evening.

One of the conditions for Villanueva taking this fight, was the inclusion of his teammate Martin Gonzales, an MMA fighter (2-0 pro, 7-4 am), and part-time triathlon participant. Upon graduation from Valley High School, Gonzales trained for a little while with Rosales Karate before coming to train with Team Los Vatos. Although Gonzales didn’t know much about his opponent, Antonio Garcia, he felt that his team had fully prepared him for whatever came his way. Garcia scored knockdowns in the 1st and 2nd rounds, but suffered several body shots and multiple hook combinations by Gonzales. Gonzales landed more shots on Garcia, but Garcia’s blows seemed to hit harder, and the two knockdowns in the first two rounds won Garcia the majority decision.

This was Johnny Tapia’s swan song, the opportunity to finish a stellar career and put to rest an unsettled score with an old foe- Frankie Archuleta. Tapia’s six-time world champion career saw him leave with an outstanding victory, but no score settled with Archuleta, due to a failed eye test by Archuleta with just about a week to go before the bout. In stepped former four-time champion Mauricio Pastrana. Pastrana, a Columbian boxer training out of Miami, FL, had been training for six weeks prior for a July bout and took the Tapia fight with just a few days’ notice. The evening’s card also had quite a few interesting bouts and stories such as- six Fantastic amateur bouts, a first professional win in a debut (Brenda Gonzalez), a canceled bout for a hometown favorite (Vincent “Lil Man” Mirabal), a truly heartbreaking no contest for another local favorite due to an accidental head-butt (Josh Torrez), a TKO rout for one of Albuquerque’s next future champions (Hector Munoz) and of course, an exhibition of experience and showmanship that put a winning cap on a Hall of Fame career (Johnny Tapia).

By the time the main event started, the Bingo Showroom at the Hard Rock was packed to standing room only. Although Tapia won his fight, and entertained the crowd, the bout was not one-sided at all. Pastrana fought with the heart of a champion, but Tapia - Albuquerque’s boxing legend - was not to be denied and the victory was his to be savored. The night’s results are listed below, along with a short ringside breakdown of the main event. (Winners listed first) • • • • • • • • • • • •

Pastrana entered the ring and waited almost 20 min for Tapia to do the same. The first round started slowly (as did just about every round). Tapia took the “aggressor” role early, and consistently, throughout the bout but Pastrana’s machine-like composure was mostly unfazed by it. Tapia continuously walked Pastrana back into the ropes. The fighters exchanged many punches during all 8 rounds, but neither inflicted much damage to the other. The referee gave an unusually high amount of warnings for low blows to Tapia during the evening (both fighters belts were worn quit high) and Tapia acknowledged them gracefully. Tapia played to the crowd and, on occasion, taunted Pastrana. For the most part Pastrana didn’t lose his composure. Two knockdowns occurred during the bout - in the 6th round, Tapia caught his foot on the canvas and went down (maybe more of a slip) and received an 8 count and in the 8th round, Pastrana went down and got his own 8 count. Through the night, Tapia’s showmanship enticed the crowd to chant “JOHNNY” over and over and Tapia, in true showman’s fashion, responded with smiles and flair. Both boxers fought a strong fight-but in the end Tapia was awarded a unanimous decision.

KING OF THE CAGE E “Fight to Live” RESULTS

King of the Cage “Fight to Live”, Saturday, May 14th at the Buffalo Thunder Resort and Casino, had a stacked card and there were thousands in attendance for this tremendous event. There were local fighters representing most of the regions in New Mexico.

To start the action, Henry Adame and Ray Martinez opened the night’s 10 bout card. The two started by exchanging kicks, but poor footing by Adame resulted in a dislocated knee for himself, and true to the nature of MMA, Martinez followed up with strikes on top for a verbal tap out in just 14 seconds of round one.

Jerry Castillo from Mescalero, NM in a Middleweight bout with Brad Richardson, one of many out of FIT NHB on the card, Richardson makes short work of his opponent with a TKO 1:31 in the first.

Grant Hobbs and Skyler Pendelton met at 125lbs. Pendelton and Hobbs battle vigorously for 2 rounds in the third round Hobbs, who had displayed good jiu jitsu earlier in the fight, ended it via arm bar submission 1:35 in the third round.

Alyssha Garcia battled Zuhey Quezada as the first of two women’s battles of the night. With both fighters having deep backgrounds in Jiu Jitsu, it was a surprise when both started landing combinations, Quezada pressed forward to take down Garcia and work in the mount pounding Garcia as she bucked and attempted many sweeps before she was caught in arm bar submission 2:37 in the first round.

Dan Gosset and Philip Campanella got right to it. Gosset was able to control the fight and scored a TKO: 28 in the first round.

Sergio Rodriguez was making his pro debut and was supported by an abundance of fans. Kevin Epley, also with a huge support group, guaranteed a loud crowd. Round one exploded as soon as Rodriguez and Epley touched gloves. Rodriguez connects and pummels for a take down. After commanding with ground and pound, Rodriguez was swept and now with Epley in control, he was striving to score with the judges and after some scrambles the first round ended. Round two-Epley seems spent and Rodriguez uses the opportunity to advance ground and pounding his way to a victory at :40 in the second round.

Kyane Hampton vs. Brenda Gonzales was the second women’s bout of the night.

A Middleweight match up (135lbs), this was the first of four main card fights. Hampton and Gonzales bolted toward each other trading punches Gonzales caught a kick, sweeping Hampton and slamming her into the canvas. Gonzales with some ground and pound.

Hampton sets up a submission but Gonzales works out. Hampton was aggressive off her back and attempts multiple submissions but Gonzales has all the answers for all the problems Hampton has posed, Gonzales passes to side control and hails right hands to Hamptons face with a TKO 3:51 of Round 1.

Guto Feliciano and Isaque Martinez were the (185lbs) main card matchup. Engaging quickly, the fight went to the ground with Martinez scoring with short strikes. He advanced, passing the guard of Feliciano and setting up and finishing with a rear naked choke 2:47 of the first round.

Frank Baca took on Frank Morris (135lbs) for the co main event. Round one was fast paced with each fighter changing positions quickly. Baca was fighting methodically and was using wrestling and ground and pound to stifle all of Morris’s jiu jitsu. Keeping the crowd entertained, both had considerable stand up and still Baca was able to overwhelm Morris with a TKO 1:07 in the second round.

With a Title defense at hand, Tim ”Dirty Bird” Means needed no motivation to make sure challenger Chis “Lightning” Leyva would walk out empty handed for this Junior welterweight (160lbs) super fight, which headlined an evening that did not disappoint. Leyva, representing Team Four Corners, entered the King of the Cage steel first, shaking off any cobwebs he may have brought in with him. He seemed ready enough until the lights dimmed and all were mesmerized by the “Dirty Bird” carrying an aura of destruction with Leyva in his cross hairs. Once in the ring, Means first step was toward Leyva’s corner and words were exchanged and with their foreheads touching, they had to be separated. Round one - Means and Leyva rush towards the center and greet each other with big punches. Means asserted himself immediately in the fight, in the early going the difference in striking was evident. Means, with a vast arsenal of Muay Thai, was tearing through any defense Leyva had to offer. Round two- Means dictates the cage with a laser sight jab that left Leyva miffed while repeating an overhand right that was somewhat effective. Leyva was able to drive Means back with a line of strikes. Means fired back.

Circling, Means finds his home in the center of the cage and continued mixing up his strikes. Leyva drops for a single leg take down, but Means slips right out, throwing knees to the shoulder and body and punching the face of Leyva. Round three- Means comes out controlling the fight again with slick jabs. Leyva constantly punches, but Means is able to slip most of the barrage. Leyva gets off a line of strikes, putting Means against the cage but the “Dirty Bird” shakes it off, countering, brutalizing and backing Leyva up on the cage. Means punches, knees and lands a spinning back elbow flush on Leyva as he begins to wilt. Still on the cage, Means lands more knees and punches to end the fight 1:28 of the third round.

All in all, this KOTC event was expertly presented and promoted, and everyone in attendance enjoyed cheering on their favorite fighters. Congratulations to all involved for an evening of fantastic MMA action. Watch for the next KOTC - “High Altitude”!

Hard Bodies Rocking the Hard Rock 2011 Fitness New Mexico & Musclemania Championships By: Genieve Sanchez of Athletes Angle After weeks of training and hard-core dieting, over 120 of the fittest bodies of New Mexico hit the stage for the 2011 Fitness New Mexico and Musclemania Championships to compete for titles in their respective divisions.

The show took place at the Isleta Hard Rock Hotel & Casino on May 21st and broke attendance records for competitors, sponsors and audience attendees since its inaugural debut in 2009 by promoter Cristin Kiburz of CK Iron.

The Fitness New Mexico & Musclemania Championships is a national qualifier for the Fitness Universe Pageant, Ms. Bikini Universe, Figure Universe Championships, & Model World Tour. Musclemania competitors of the Fitness New Mexico championships will also qualify for the Musclemania World Tour to be held in Miami in June and Las Vegas in November.

I was proud to be among the outstanding athletes that took the stage the day of the show and was thrilled to bring my best competition body to date. This show was my fourth competition and was once again an intense journey of training and dieting that led up to the final moments on the stage. For many who are not familiar with the sport of fitness and bodybuilding, it takes weeks of discipline, preparations and planning prior to stepping on stage. Of course every athlete is different but contest diet and training preparations typically start around 10-15 wks prior to a show. Getting into contest shape is an intense process of building your body physically, with strength training, and leaning your body through a strict competition orientated clean eating diet and utilization of cardio exercises. These men and women dedicate their schedules, and make many personal sacrifices, to compete in front of the judges and demonstrate their craft of training and diet discipline.

For me, my journey of competition training has been one of my greatest success stories of personal transformation. I had always been an athlete growing up, playing sports all through high school, playing college basketball and even trained for several half-marathon races after graduate school. The problem was I was frustrated with my training efforts and my body’s lack of response to my training, what I call Fit but Fat. It was not until one day at a book store

that I was memorized by the athletic look of the model on a popular fitness magazine. I took the magazine home and read on to learn about the sport of fitness and the critical component that clean eating nutrition and resistance training plays into the development of an athletic looking body. It was at that moment I decided to sign up for my first fitness show and committed myself to making this intense goal a reality. Six months later, after training for my first show, I stood up on stage and displayed my weight loss and body transformation, which was perhaps one of my most accomplished moments I have ever experienced.

Little did I know that my first fitness show would be the catalyst for so many positive opportunities including; two magazine features including world renown women’s fitness magazine Oxygen, landing a major sponsorship, spokes model, and fitness columnist opportunity for international athletic rehabilitation company KINESIO Tape, placing Top 15 at my first national show, becoming an assistant coach for the Iron Divas competitive fitness team, and expanding my freelance graphic design talents to include fitness/bodybuilding promotional graphic design for several regional shows under the Fitness Universe Tour federation. Hands down, making the decision to muster my courage and challenge myself to train for a show was one of the best decisions I have ever made and it has been a launch pad for an entirely new avenue of athletic competition and variety of opportunities in the fitness industry.

As with many things in life, there are always great gains to be made, but it is the vision, and furthermore the drive, that makes those gains attainable. You will see these characteristics, and more, within a fitness and bodybuilding competitor. So in conclusion, a BIG congratulation to all the competitors of this event, no matter if you walked away with a trophy or not, your journey to great personal achievement is the real accolade. Standing applause for you and best of luck on your next completion and off-season training.

First opened in 1998 on Albuquerque’s Westside and moved one year later to a Twelfth St. location for four years. FIT NHB is one of Albuquerque’s top training facilities for boxing and MMA. They are currently located at 110 Lomas Blvd NE, since 2003, and owned and operated by Tom Vaughn and Arlene Sanchez. Both brought different techniques in creating the gym they run together. Training professionals, amateurs and enthusiasts alike, they train six days a week (Monday-Saturday). They also promote the King of the Cage series (going on three years), Friday Night Fights (amateur boxing and Muay Thai bouts, going on two years) and are currently training three world champions while producing a total of four along with numerous contenders.
