What’s Up at KNUXX? Hey there, what’s up? I can’t believe that an entire month has passed since our first issue of KNUXX hit over 100 racks in New Mexico. So many things have happened and we’ve seen “just how deep the rabbit hole goes” in the New Mexico fight community. It seems that every time we attend one event we get information on two more. It’s just a sign of how great it is that we’re attempting to bring some unity, communication and structure to this community. With that in mind, you will notice some really positive additions to this issue – namely the “Fight Card”, Event Calendar, four more pages, and some great new writers.

Finally we would like to thank our advertisers and new writers. The feedback we’ve received has been tremendous but two things kept coming back to us – more content and more pages. We’ve accomplished this by getting some awesome support from some great freelance writers – Trula Howe & Chewy Saenz – both well known folks in the New Mexico fight scene. Que Loco Cagefighting –“UNPREDICTABLE” – April 30, 2011, Los Lunas, NM. The noise at Daniel Fernandez Youth Center belied the numbers of the crowd, as each and every voice screamed for their favorite fighter, in the main event of Que Loco Cagefighting – UNPREDICTABLE, on April 30, 2011. Dominic “Fallen Angel” Maldonado, Que Loco and KOTC fighter, met Mike “Bulldog” Espinosa, LA Boxing, in the ring for the prestige of the Que Loco Heavyweight Title Belt. The gymnasium roared with cheers, making it sound more like 2000 instead of the 300+ in attendance. Maldonado and Espinosa immediately went to work, once that bell rang, evenly trading body shots and leg kicks, with few clean head shots. Toward the end of the first round, Espinosa had Maldonado in a standing guillotine that seemed tight enough to put him to sleep, but Maldonado managed to twist out of it. The second round went much differently, with Maldonado landing several heavy combos on Espinosa, eventually driving him to the mat, and after several seconds of punishment, the ref called a stop to the fight, giving Maldonado the win by TKO, at 2:49. Henry Adame, of J5 MMA in Grants, met Philip Perez of Perez Fighting Systems for the Que Loco 135 Belt. Adame took the belt with a triangle choke in the first round, to the great joy of his family and friends, who eagerly ran to the ring to take pictures. Adame will be competing on the amateur card for King of the Cage – Fight to Live, on Saturday, May 14, at Buffalo Thunder Resort & Casino. Brandon Trujillo defeated Ray Vaiz at 2:14 in the2nd round by rear naked choke. Derek Perez defeated Marcel Jaremko by arm bar in 1:52 of the first round. Steve Baca, current Que Loco 145 champion, was unable to compete, as his opponent backed out of the fight last minute. The event began with the assembly of all fighters in the ring, followed by several singleround wrestling matches by youngsters anxious to test their wrestling skills against outside opponents. Each of these rounds ended in a draw, which, in Que Loco, meant that both won, having their hands raised in victory.Several other matches were scheduled for the day, but these were cancelled due to lack of proper background paperwork and bloodwork completion.
Que Loco Cagefighting is an amateur fighting organization, founded for the primary purpose of giving local youth a positive, athletic outlet, as well as an opening into the very prevalent sport of MMA in New Mexico. Shining the spotlight on talent from local gyms, these events are often scouted by larger organizations, giving these young folks even greater opportunities to excel. QLC is funded by sponsorship from local businesses such as Valley Tattoo, Baskin Robbins, Al’s Upholstery, Absolute Throwdown Fightshop, and OTM Fightshop, as well as several others.
Trula Howe is a freelance writer, covering events and athletes for New Mexico’s fight sports, as well as many other sports, for the last year. She has been a fan of combat sports since 2002, and of sports in general for her whole life. A working mother of three, she loves to share her experiences with her kids, who also enjoy sports of all types.

www.KNUXX.com UFC 129 a First-Person Commentary by Adam “Chewy” Saenz Uptown Sports Bar & Grill Pay-Per-View Event Saturday, April 30th, 2011 Uptown was roaring loudly and the atmosphere was growing with anticipation of the main event. The house was becoming more packed with eager fans every second. Myself and the crew from “On The Mic with Mike Adams”, were doing a live remote at Uptown Sports Bar & Grill, covering UFC 129-Georges St. Pierre (GSP) versus Jake Shields. The first live prelim started the night as “The Juggernaut” Jake Ellenberger took on Sean Pierson. Round one started with both opponents taking their time to size each other up. Ellenberger initiated a takedown but within seconds Pierson was on his feet. Ellenberger lands a rights cross that shakes Pierson, he desperately clinched shortly after. Ellenberger lands a big hook that turns off Pierson’s lights and finishes with punches, Ellenberger scoring a TKO 2:22 in the first. Cesar Gracie-trained Nate Diaz verses Canadian native Rory MacDonald was the next fight. In all 3 rounds it was a one sided battle, MacDonald being able to control and overwhelm Diaz maybe even convincing Diaz to reclaim a home in the lightweight division – none-the-less, the impressive 21 year old, Rory MacDonald, improves to 11-1. The pay-per-view drew a short intermission as the spectators made their predictions on the upcoming fights with the VJ for the night, Mike Adams. UFC contender Mark Bocek and Former WEC lightweight champion Ben Henderson stood center stage awaiting instruction. As they faced off, the tension between them was visible. In round one, Henderson was getting the best of the exchanges on the feet - landing punches and crisp combinations with which Bocek was having a tough time dealing, knowing that he was doing everything he could to turn it into a ground fight. Over the course of three rounds, several submission attempts and reversals later, Henderson, stole every round gaining a unanimous decision - putting him at the top tier of the lightweight division.

“This is a Team Tapia promotion, they control everything. If it goes the distance and the judges are professional – I’m okay with that.”

“Yes. I’m more dedicated to being in the gym and pushing myself to the limit but also smarter about tactics and techniques than when I was younger.”

UFC 129 - continued from page 5 Finally the main event arrived. The energy in Uptown wass electric; everyone was on the edge of their seat. Mike made his way through the bar and got the last picks for the fight. GSP’s presence, and local connection, was strongly felt and only a handful of people gave Jake Shields a shot. Before you knew it, the first bell sounded to start the main event. The champion, GSP, stood sturdy in the center of the octagon trading punches and kicks. Surprisingly neither GSP nor Jake Shields had attempted any take downs. The war waged on. Neither fighter took control but GSP had three rounds won convincingly as they entered the championship rounds. GSP had accumulated damage to his nose and his left eye (he made later statements to his corner that he couldn’t see). Still game, Jake Shields, welcomed punches and kicks for the opportunity to turn the fight around. It seemed he had the fourth round won and pushed the pace in the fifth, but it was no shock when they announced the winner, and still champion, Georges St. Pierre. Regardless the performance, all that were in attendance knew they witnessed something special - the rise of new stars, old favorites standing their ground, fan favorites expanded their horizons, and champions added more legitimacy to their reign.
