NEWS The Biggest of Weekends On 11-13 July, Fine & Country held five events to celebrate the growth of the brand as the Fine & Country Big Weekend. As weekends go, it doesn’t get much bigger than this. The weekend started with the International Conference at the Millennium Hotel, Mayfair. Over 150 licensees from across the world attended seminars and workshops covering a range of topics including training and the latest developments within the network. Next up was the 1920’s Gala Dinner and Charity Auction, where Malcolm Lindley, Managing Director of Fine & Country, launched The Fine & Country Foundation. The foundation will support and raise awareness of the causes of homelessness, a social issue Fine & Country is passionate about. The auction and some generous donations raised an admirable £40,500.

The next day saw the official launch of Fine & Country Golf, the new division run in partnership with European Tour Properties and Troon Golf. Another launch filled the evening with one of Fine & Country’s most impressive offices starting up: Fine & Country Fulham. The Big Weekend was rounded off with the much-anticipated Fine & Country Warwickshire Gold Cup, with thousands of guests attending to sip, sup and watch the high profile polo match.

Polo Victors With over 4,300 registered guests, the 2014 Fine & Country Warwickshire Gold Cup was a huge success. Guests from across the globe, including South Africa, France, Spain and Russia, as well as people from the local area and throughout the UK, travelled to Dallas Burston Polo Club to watch the high-profile polo match. At the end of the day, the Dawson Group Marauders claimed the winning title against Quicksilver to take home the coveted Fine & Country Warwickshire Gold Cup. Last year’s winners C.A.N.I came in fourth place. “The Fine & Country Warwickshire Gold Cup Polo event was a great day, made even better by the fact that we managed to win the Cup. I’m very proud of our team because this tournament is well known for being a prestigious one to win,” said Freya Dawson from Dawson Group Marauders. As well as spectating, guests enjoyed a range of activities including helicopter rides, archery, shooting and obstacle courses, not to mention the outstanding food and beverages on offer.

Laying the Foundations Malcolm Lindley, Managing Director of Fine & Country, launched the Fine & Country Foundation on 11 July and to date £40,500 has been raised. The Fine & Country Foundation has been created to help combat one of the largest social issues in the UK – homelessness. In 2013, the government estimated around 2,414 people sleep rough on any one night across England, a rise of 36% over the previous three years. Whilst many think that the reasons for homelessness arise from drug use and alcoholism, people generally become homeless for a whole range of complex and overlapping reasons such as family breakdown, mental or physical health problems or debts. Solving homelessness is not only about putting a roof over people’s heads, but also involves trying so tackle the reasons they became homeless in the first place.

What really sets Terre Blanche apart, however, is the revolutionary Albatros Golf Performance Center, encompassing the renowned Leadbetter Academy and Biomecaswing centre. Together, they provide one of the most comprehensive golf research and teaching facilities in the world. “They have all the tools and expertise right there; for professional golfers, elite sportspeople or guests who simply want health advice or physiotherapy treatment,” indicates Jean-Marie Casella, Director of Terre Blanche Golf. The venue’s reputation for sporting excellence has been quickly established, resulting in its inauguration as the first European Tour Performance Institute (ETPI). “The ETPI started when The European Tour and the staff who operate the on-Tour physiotherapy unit asked me to develop my biomechanics concept for the benefit of all European Tour players,” explains Jean-Jacques Rivet, Head of Biomechanics and Sports Performance at the ETPI. Through the ETPI, Rivet’s task is to collect and evaluate scientific data about the golfer’s body, club and ball flight, allowing European Tour players and amateurs alike to create cutting edge personal development programmes. Using detailed physical, video and force plate analysis, Rivet and his highly trained team of biomechanists can identify any weaknesses in a player’s action which may hinder performance.

“We give players confidence. By teaching them how to repeat and maintain their swing, they can create a strategy on the golf course. The players know that swing maintenance is far more important than their power.”

“It all began when David Leadbetter asked me how to adapt a golf swing in a way that was physically compatible with his players,” explains Rivet. “He was concerned with protecting his golfers from injury.” “The process we have developed interprets how a player’s physical limitations may interfere with their golf swing,” he continues. “With our analysis, we can help the player’s coach modify their training programme and direction for the future.” Professional coaches at the centre’s illustrious Leadbetter Academy, headed by Alain Alberti, use the information provided by Rivet and his team to develop series of bespoke drills for their players, targeting any weaknesses. “The most important piece of equipment in our process is the force plate,” says Rivet. “Developed in conjunction with AboutGolf, it is the only one in the world able to track the player’s weight in each foot, their centre of gravity, and the location of the ball. We know from our data that a golfer’s centre of gravity is linked to the direction of their club head and club

face position, so we determine how they can manage their total weight during the swing to enhance their smash factor and compressive force at impact.” Rivet identifies a range of issues in the players he works with, but highlights some important patterns. “The most common problem is the lack of coordination and foot grounding,” he states. “Without good foot grounding it’s difficult to separate your shoulders and hips during the rotation of the golf swing. This is often the result of flexibility restrictions in the legs.”

Mr. Rivet and his team work with a host of top European Tour professionals, and it’s this experience that gives Terre Blanche its distinguished reputation. “Every six weeks we travel to European Tour tournaments with the force plate so players can check their foot grounding,” says Rivet. “It’s very popular.” “We give players confidence. By teaching them how to repeat and maintain their swing, they can create a strategy on the golf course. The players know that swing maintenance is far more important than their power,” he continues. Interestingly, it’s not only the top professionals harnessing this technology to improve their golf. “We can apply the same concepts used with European Tour players to all standards of golfers,”

It’s no surprise then that the centre is so popular with Terre Blanche’s guests, who can book packages that combine spa treatments, fitness programmes and bespoke biomechanical analysis. Dubai is the flashy younger brother, the trend-setter in Armani, wearing oversized Bulgari sunglasses and a diamond encrusted Jaeger LeCoultre timepiece on its wrist, which dangles from a Lamborghini, loudly revving its powerful engine to draw attention. The distant cousins: Ras al Khaimah, Umm al Quwain, Fujairah, Sharjah and Ajman look on, emulating Dubai’s style in small bursts. Abu Dhabi is the older brother. More conservative, this city has learnt from Dubai’s mistakes and takes a measured pace as it recreates itself as a classic city. The hedonistic pleasures are all there, from architecturally resplendent hotels to pumping nightspots and exclusive enclaves such as the Monte-Carlo Beach Club Saadiyat. Yet, amongst the high rises, the top notch restaurants and designer fashion stores, a city of culture lurks. An outpost of the Louvre is on its way and the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will follow in testament of this outlook.

There is much to see and do in the Capital and I am trying to pack it into one weekend. I start at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, perhaps Abu Dhabi’s finest monument and one of the most-visited buildings in the UAE. The gleaming white spires rise out of the sand as if a mirage. Destined to be one of the great architectural treasures of contemporary UAE society, this may be the most opulent mosque in the world. Composed of elements from a cornucopia of global destinations, as well as home-grown, more than 3,000 workers took part in its construction. A palatial edifice of marble, stone, gold, semi-precious stones, crystals and ceramics, it covers a massive 22,412 square metres. Dressed in an abaya, a loose, black covering from head to toe, as a mark of respect, I stroll through the arches to the courtyard entrance, marked by flowers in natural colours inlaid into the pathway. The mosque can hold 41,000 people, and today with only a smattering of visitors braving the humidity, it is filled with a hushed reverence. The spires point towards the bright blue sky as the sun bakes the glittering marble. At the main hall I leave my shoes to walk over the largest carpet in the world (all 5,627 metres of it). Above hangs a multi-coloured chandelier of immense proportions. The third-largest in the world, it was imported from Germany, its Swarovski crystals reflecting shards of light in the silence.

Yet, ask those same people about the United Arab Emirates and they appear distinctively uneasy about their lack of knowledge. sensuous curves and sleek lines. My light, spacious suite is decked in fresh-white, its generous balcony overlooking Yas Marina, a collection of yachts bobbing in the sea’s light swell. I don’t have time to dally. My friend is meeting me for dinner, so I freshen up and head to Origins, one of the hotel’s many top-notch dining spots. Today there is a special Arabian buffet, the sumptuous spread stretching across every available surface. Plates are piled high with wrapped vine leaves, fattoush (Arabian salad) topped with crunchy pita flakes, falafel (chickpea patties) and all manner of temptations – and that’s just the starters. Lamb ouzi, a delicious slow-baked lamb and rice dish, is at the head of a line of tureens wafting delicious smells into the air as each is opened. There are hundreds of dishes to choose from. I cast aside my diet without a second thought and tuck in to the fabulous fare. Every morsel is delicious and we graze until we can fit no more.

Waking refreshed the next morning, I atone at the gym before heading to the glorious rooftop pool to soak up some sunshine. I hover between lounger and pool, perfectly relaxed, my reverie broken only by staff delivering cool towels and iced water. Thoughts flit through my head of activities I should be sampling. Yas Waterworld, an extensive water park, is a short paddle away, as is Ferrari World, with Formula Rossi, the world’s fastest roller coaster. I could slip into the hotel’s fabulous ESPA for a soothing treatment, or dine at one of the water-side restaurants scattered around Yas Marina. I could shop, dine and play, but in the end the sun decides, ensnaring me in its rays. I am happy right here, so here I shall stay until the sun releases me. There’s always tomorrow. n
