Fine & Country down under Fine & Country has opened an office in Australia, marking the brand’s expansion in the southern hemisphere, having already moved across Europe and into Asia and Africa. Fine & Country Australia will be led by Kevin Fine, a qualified Licensed Real Estate Agent (LREA) and accredited member of the South African Property Professional Club. Kevin and his team will specialise in the marketing and sale of prime residential properties in and around Double Bay in New South Wales, and have the intention of opening more Australian offices in the future. Spare a thought Winter is on its way and cold weather will soon touch every region in the country. While we are fortunate enough to have cosy homes, there are many who have no place to shelter. Each year, as winter approaches and temperatures drop, many homeless people move from the streets to shelter systems to escape the cold. However, few communities have city-wide cold-weather response plans and there are gaping holes in accessibility.

At least a quarter of a million people find themselves homeless each year. Those who can’t find shelter sleep rough, which has serious consequences. On average, homeless people die at just 47 years old, compared to 81 years for the average UK citizen and the streets are a dangerous place to be – homeless people are 13 times more likely to be a victim of violent crime than the general public and 47 times more likely to be a victim of theft. There is no national figure for how many people are homeless across the UK, as homelessness is recorded differently in each nation and many homeless people do not show up in official statistics at all. Government statistics do show that last year, 2,714 people slept rough in England on any one night. That’s a lot of people sheltering in doorways in the biting cold.

SEA AND STONES EUROPEAN GOLFERS ARE LOOKING BEYOND THE WELL-KNOWN GOLFING MECCAS. DANIEL PRICE FINDS CULTURE AND COURSES IN ESTONIA. Many golfers in Europe seek out the selection of courses situated in the southern area of the continent, with Spain and Portugal among the prime locations. However, people in the know are now looking elsewhere for their golfing weekend, in a climate where the air is clear and the nature remains largely undiscovered. Welcome to Estonia. Estonia may be familiar to those who enjoy taking a cultural or nature-based weekend break. Tallinn is not just one of the most picturesque towns in Estonia; it’s one of Europe’s real gems. Furthermore, the country itself is far less populated than many others on the continent, meaning large areas of countryside and forest have remained untouched.

“Both courses are situated in a heritage area, which has more than 5,000 years of history, with people living and playing different games,” says Estonian Golf and Country Club CEO, Hanno Kross. “The nine-hole Stone Course is on top of a cliff, which has completely different nature to that of the Sea Course, which is situated where 10,000 years ago, after the Ice Age, the sea was located.” It immediately becomes apparent that this is not your standard golf club. In fact, it’s far from it. An example of one of the holes on the Stone Course sums up the uniqueness of EGCC. “The stone

Kross reflects on the success of the course, saying: “The Sea Course has been voted four times in a row to the Top 100 golf courses in continental Europe and has hosted many international individual European Championships and also the World Cup Qualifiers twice.” Not only that, but next year, the men’s individual European Championship will be held on the Sea Course, which highlights its standing in the professional European game.

I’VE DONE THE LOT THE RIVER LOT, FRANCE’S SEVENTH BIGGEST RIVER, WINDS THROUGH FARMLAND AND VILLAGES, PROVIDING SCENIC VISTAS ALONG ITS LENGTH. BRONWEN HILLER BOATS THE LOT. We arrive at Douelle on the River Lot in France ready to board our boat, which will provide accommodation for the next two weeks. This is not a five-star river cruise, but rather a self-catering, self-navigating, work the locks yourself type holiday. It is my fourth biannual boat trip with this group of friends. Having cut our teeth on the Canal du Midi, we moved onto the Canal de Nivernais, a lesser known gem in Burgundy. We are fortunate to have a passionate sailor in our party, who enjoys boating and was prepared to gain a Master 5 qualification with a CEVNI (European waterways certification), allowing us to graduate to the coast of Italy and sail in style into the Venetian lagoon. This year, it’s the Lot. With this experience under our belts, here we are, armed with local fare from the market at Cahors; several fresh baguettes and enough food to ensure that we will survive the minor inconvenience of the Sunday shut-down of many small French towns. After a

quick overview by a technician and a practice run around the basin, including a refresher on reversing with the rear of the boat to the quay, we wander to a local family-run restaurant for an excellent meal. Having two weeks to make our way upstream to Saint Cirq de Lapopie and back down to Luzech before returning to Douelle we opt to take it slow and remain in port for the night. Cahors is the capital of this region. Historically the town was an important part of the Roman Empire, when it served as a major wine producing area. After a turbulent history it is once again known for the production of full-bodied red wines using Malbec grapes. It occupies a small peninsula in a loop in the river and features the beautiful 14th Century Pont Valentre bridge. Emerging on our first morning, we find the mist is still floating a few metres above the river giving it an air of mystery. It is not long

before the sun bursts through and we have a perfect autumn day to begin our journey. The River Lot is the longest river in south-west France meandering for 300 miles until it reaches the Garonne. The short 80-mile stretch that we are exploring provides a new vista around each bend. The first day’s run serves as a refresher on the process of going through locks. By the fifth lock we are all feeling confident in our roles. Having six people on board simplifies this, with one driver, two on ropes, two on opening the locks and one back-up. All the locks, except for one, are manual without lock-keepers in attendance. The value of having a problem-solver as part of the crew is brought home to us when over-enthusiastic cranking at one lock results in an uncoupling of the lock gate. The first response is to ignore the sign that says “don’t use force” and try the brute strength approach. When this fails, a more delicate approach with some engineering analysis is used, resulting in success. This style of travel provides the convenience of unpacking just once and the flexibility of choosing the location for each mooring as we travel. Something we learnt on the first trip was to allow time for this. A trip that is advertised as a one-week sail can create pressure to travel a certain distance each day. This pressure is increased by having to wait at locks if there is a large amount of river traffic, usually experienced during high season. The locks that have keepers are also closed for one hour for lunch. Travelling at the end of the

holiday season and on a river with manual locks reduces the time pressure. Despite this, approaching a new lock provides a moment of intensity as we attempt to see if the gates are open for us to sail straight in.

The river is considerably more challenging than canals, with weirs producing cross currents that are tricky to negotiate when entering and exiting locks. This becomes a topic of conversation amongst skippers from diverse countries. It is reassuring to find that even experienced boaters find the river testing. There is a noticeable collegiality that develops amongst water-travellers, bonding through the shared experience. There are other challenges that face travellers emanating from the limitation of space. We have opted for a boat with two bathrooms and four cabins, which, with only six people, means the saloon remains a communal area without conversion to an extra sleeping space. It is, however, easy to forget to remove the toilet paper when one is showering. The kitchen is adequate for two people preparing meals, which we tend to do every second day, opting for local restaurants on other nights. Market days are highlights, allowing us to stock up on the specialities of the region and as long as there is a boulangerie (bakery) within walking distance, we are not going to fade away. Only occasionally do we allow an envious glance to escape when we are moored beside a larger, newer more salubrious boat, reminding each other of the difference in cost.

Apart from wonderful French food, one of the highlights of this particular trip is a visit to St Cirq de Lapopie, a member of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France (the most beautiful villages of France). It perches on a cliff, 100 metres above the river, the location originally selected for defense. The walk looks daunting, but a walking track meandering gently upwards, brings us to this museum-like gem after a mere 15 minutes. Our group disperses according to interest; some to the museum, others to the church or the lookout, which provides an amazing panorama, with the river winding through farming land and vineyards. We are happy to have chosen to travel in the off season, as the village reportedly hosts up to 400,000 visitors each year. Our travel downstream includes a stop at Bouzies, from where we organise a visit to the cave of Pech Merle. Described as the “Sistine Chapel of the Causses of the Lot district, one of the most beautiful monuments in Palaeolithic pictorial art” by French prehistorian Abbot Breuil, the cave is another highlight, not only for the prehistoric paintings but also for the amazing geological formations. In particular, the cave pearls or pistolites that have been formed by specks of sand gradually coated by calcite and polished by running water serve as yet another reminder of the beauty found in nature. We conclude our journey by celebrating our successful navigation at the same restaurant in Douelle where we enjoyed our first meal. The weeks have flown by, albeit at a slow cruising pace. We may have done the Lot, but we’re already planning our next trip. n

The coffee-coloured water of the River Thames swirls past as I board the Thames Clipper, flashing my River Roamer pass at the attendant. I settle into a seat by the window and gaze at London’s waterside developments as they drift past, struck by the architectural repurposing that has transformed the warehouses and dockside facilities of old into desirable, modern apartments and penthouses. It’s easy to forget the River Thames as you browse the market at Covent Garden or stroll through Hyde Park, but much of the Capital’s development has relied on this arterial waterway. We soon pull in to North Greenwich, home of the Emirates Air Line, the UK’s first urban cable car. The gondola cabins arc up to the 90-metre midpoint, offering superb views of the Thames Barrier on one side, and the O2 Arena on the other. Familiar landmarks such as the Shard and the office high-rises of Canary Wharf pierce the skyline, while less visible developments, such as the Olympic Park are outlined as the gondola makes its way over the river. I ride the Emirates Air Line both ways to give equal attention to the vistas. It’s cold outside, but encased in glass, I am protected from the buffeting gusts of wind. Returning to ground level, the crisp breeze numbs my fingers, so I stop at CRAFT London, one of the many trendy eateries that have sprung up around the O2. The deliciously strong latte warms me immediately and I nibble on a moist slice of honey and Earl Grey cake topped with moss-green pistachio frosting before catching the Thames Clipper back to Canary Wharf.

I’m staying at the Four Seasons Canary Wharf, a lovely hotel perched on the water’s edge. The views from the spacious suite are incredible, particularly at night, when lights twinkle along the riverbanks. There’s no need to wander far to find dinner either. Canary Wharf is packed with options, ranging from quick bites to extended a la carte menus. I remember this area from years ago, when it was a quiet collection of offices. Now it is bustling with activity, the multitude of transportation options ensuring a constant flow of visitors. My friend Judy finds her way to the Four Seasons Canary Wharf easily when her flight lands and post-dinner we relax in the suite, nibbling on the selection of berries and bite-sized chocolate tidbits that welcomed us. It may be winter outside, but we are comfortably snug. We’re moments from everything London has to offer, but as a frequent visitor to the city, Judy is keen to explore further afield. After a delicious breakfast in the hotel’s lobby restaurant, we make our way down the stairs just outside the hotel’s entrance to again board the Thames Clipper, alighting at Greenwich, where the ferry docks right by the impressive Old Royal Naval College. Weekend visitors throng the open courtyard around the Cutty Sark, the clipper’s trio of masts dominating the skyline. We take a closer look at the beautifully restored piece of maritime history. Cutty Sark visited every major port in the world through the course of her working life, sailing under both the Red Ensign and the Portuguese flag. She arrived at her current resting place in Greenwich in 1954 and was carefully restored back to her tea clipper appearance, before opening to the public. Inside, the ship is packed with interactive exhibits, designed to stimulate the minds of children and adults alike, while underneath the immense keel, a café provides sustenance.

less impressive. The neo-classical masterpiece by James ‘Athenian’ Stuart and William Newton features a Samuel Green organ and an altarpiece painted by Benjamin West. Meandering to the Royal Observatory, we are sidetracked by Greenwich Market. The historic market is set within a World Heritage site and curiosities, artwork and jewellery abound on every stall. It is with reluctance that we keep our wallets closed, resisting temptation. We have tickets to the Captured Starlight show at the planetarium, so we don’t have time to linger. We stride through Greenwich Park, following the walkways to London’s only public planetarium, adjacent to the Royal Observatory Greenwich. After a brief introduction to astronomy by one of the Royal Observatory astronomers, we lie back in our seats to admire the stars and admire some of the breathtaking images that made the shortlist for this year’s Insight Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition, learning about the objects and phenomena behind the images. It is somehow ironic that we are running out of time at the place that time begins. We visit the Prime Meridian line, straddling the hemispheres, before entering Flamsteed House, the original Observatory building at Greenwich, designed by Sir Christopher

Outside, a food market has sprung up, offering an impressive variety of innovative street eats, ranging from ramen burgers to rice balls. We snack on a pulled pork wrap as we wander towards the Painted Hall and Chapel at the Old Royal Naval College. We walk through the apartments where the Astronomers Royal and their families lived and worked and admire John Harrison’s historical time-keepers, in an exhibition that outlines how the problem of longitude was resolved. It would be easy to spend more time here, but closing time is announced, so we make our way back down the hill to The Guildford Arms for dinner. This cosy pub with two dining areas – more formal dining upstairs and a lively, relaxed space downstairs – offers an intriguing selection of treats. We agree to share our starters, selecting cod fish fingers, which are deliciously crispy on the outside and come with a creamy tartar sauce and watercress, and the equally tasty roast beetroot, feta, walnut and red chard salad. For mains, we both choose the grilled rib-eye steak, which arrives cooked to perfection, the tender meat resting on fondant potato, with a dollop of carrot and anise puree and a selection of Girolles and button onions drizzled with Rosemary jus. We are pleasantly full, but the dessert menu is irresistible, so we share a generous portion of vanilla cheesecake, a few fresh raspberries and strawberry coulis balancing the sweetness. Sated, we board the Thames Clipper back to the doorstep of the Four Seasons Canary Wharf. The sky is grey on our final morning and we are reluctant to leave the warm confines of the hotel. We linger over breakfast, selecting delectable items from the a la carte menu, including Westferry Eggs, a local take on Eggs Benedict. When we can delay no longer, we check out, leaving our luggage in storage while we explore the river one last time on a sightseeing cruise with City Cruises. We chug west around the bends of the River Thames, stopping at Westminster and the London Eye, while enjoying the impromptu commentary by the crew.

There’s so much more to London than the square mile and the shopping enclaves of Oxford Street. The Four Seasons Canary Wharf is the perfect base for exploring the delights of Greenwich and the grand old River Thames. The square mile may have once been the beating heart of the Capital, but the River Thames is the artery that has given the city life. n
