NEWS Expanding the brand At the beginning of April 2015, Fine & Country opened its sixth office in Portugal. Fine & Country Comporta is located in Comporta village, south of Lisbon in the heart of Portugal’s Costa Azul Blue Coast. It is the third office in Portugal to open within the last 12 months, following offices in Chiado and Estoril. Fine & Country Comporta will be led by Regional Manager, Rui Tomaz, who has been working in the Comporta area for years.

The Comporta showroom, which is located in a rustic-chic refurbished barn, will specialise in the marketing and sales of luxury residential and tourist real estate in the Blue Coast area. The properties in the area range from modern, fully-furnished apartments on the Troia Peninsula for as little as 350,000€ through to luxury sea-view villas for up to 1,500,000€. The Blue Coast is a 30 minute drive from Lisbon International Airport and is becoming the destination of choice for English, French and Portuguese buyers looking for a holiday property with a real Portuguese flavour and prices that cannot be beaten in other resort areas of Portugal. Owners of the business, Charles Roberts and Nuno Durão launched the Comporta office following a successful two years for Fine & Country Portugal. Nuno comments, “Prices in Portugal dropped by up to 30% with the economic crisis. We have now reached a platform whereby prices have stabilised. There is no increase but there is more confidence in the market and for the first time in over five years we are seeing the international market returning.” Charles adds: “Every day, the Fine & Country brand is becoming more well-known in Portugal. The tremendous marketing we get from Fine & Country Head Office helps raise brand awareness worldwide. We have ambitions to brand further offices in these regions over the next few months.”

UK growth The Fine & Country network is also experiencing expansion in the UK, with the opening of two new offices. Fine & Country Hitchin opened its doors in February 2015. The agency is located in Hitchin town centre on Hermitage Road, representing the brand’s expansion in the Home Counties. Neil Wise, Managing Director, says: “We chose Fine & Country because of the size of the network and its credibility. Going for gold Now in its seventh consecutive year, Fine & Country are hosting the Fine & Country Gold Cup 2015 at Dallas Burston Polo Club in Warwickshire on Sunday 5th July. Last year’s event saw the Dawson Group Marauders storm to victory in a thrilling final against Quicksilver. The team will return to Dallas Burston this year to defend their title in the Fine & County Gold Cup final. Last year saw over 4,000 guests and this year is set to be bigger and better. A face lift in Dubai Fine & Country Dubai has announced the opening of a new retail shop office in Discovery Pavilion, Discovery Gardens in Dubai, a substantial community mall with nearly 30 shops, a medical centre, a nursery, restaurants and cafes, designed to serve an estimated 25,000 residents. The new shop will benefit from increased footfall from high net worth individuals likely to be shopping in the mall. The new outlet comes just one month after the opening of another office in Dubai Sports City, a multi-venue sports complex, and is a testament to the success of the business in the United Arab Emirates. Matt Ramos, from Fine & Country UAE comments: “Our Discovery Gardens’ office specialises in the neighbouring areas such as Jumeirah Park & Al Furjan, while our Dubai Sports City accommodates communities such as Dubai Sports City, Victory Heights, Arabian Ranches and Jumeirah Golf Estates.”

Risky Rikshaw Run Sean Newman, Director of Fine & Country Warwickshire & West Midlands, is celebrating surviving the extremely risky Rickshaw Run held in April. Running on behalf of The Fine & Country Foundation, Sean and his teammates Tyler and Phil, under the team name the ‘DelhiTubbies’, travelled 3,500 kilometres across Indian terrain in aid of the Fine & Country Foundation. The Rickshaw Run saw Sean and his team-mates put their lives in the hands of their seven horsepower Rickshaw ‘Noo-noo’. There was no preconfigured route planned and no back-up transport. Sean is never far from an adventurous fundraising event and embraced the race, described as the challenge of a lifetime. On the first day the team was caught in the middle of a sandstorm that turned the entire sky dark, resulting in the DelhiTubbies seeking shelter in a local house. With numerous breakdowns over the following days and various broken pistons, Sean, Tyler and Phil often found themselves driving at night to make up for lost time. By taking part in the Rickshaw Run, the team is hoping to raise £15,000 in charitable donations which they will match to bring the total to £30,000. he European Tour has the privilege of hosting golf tournaments at some of the best venues the European continent has to offer. With events being staged on the island of Madeira in Portugal, the city of Barcelona in Spain, Northern Ireland’s County Down and Malmö in Sweden, The European Tour offers a glimpse of the differing landscapes, courses and cultures that Europe has on display. t 630 feet in altitude, spread over nearly 2,500 acres near the base of the Cabris hill, lies the romantically situated French town of Peymeinade. Peymeinade was a relative latecomer to independence. Until 1868 it was considered part of Cabris. It was only in the early 13th Century that a handful of Cabris inhabitants began to permanently reside down the hill, in homes built upon a small knoll at the foot of the larger hill of Cabris. The picturesque town stretches nearly four kilometres southward to the Siagne River and the village of Auribeau, over hills and small valleys. It is crossed by the main road to Grasse, the former Chemin Royal. Today Peymeinade is a small peaceful town, which has undergone considerable post-war expansion to such an extent that it has become the second shopping town after Grasse.

The oldest part of the village comprises a number of pretty 18th Century houses grouped around the Saint-Roch Church, built in 1724. A beautiful round 19th Century fountain adorned with lions’ heads graces this area, and a library with a ceiling painted in 1882 by the “Compagnons du Tour de France” craft guild. Pastel house fronts with blue and pale green shutters, dressed stone archways, Roman tiles in shades of brown, and pots packed with lavender contribute to the peaceful atmosphere in this part of the village.

Along the main road, which has become the central avenue of the modern village, lie 110 small businesses, four schools, a secondary school, a swimming pool, and a major sports complex. O

porto, often shortened to Porto, is Portugal’s second-largest city, although it doesn’t have a big city feel. One moment my friend Lizzie and I are at the airport, the next we are being whisked through the centre on an impressively efficient Metro. Chugging through the city, the view as we cross the Ponte Luis I railway bridge comes as a delightful surprise. Colourful buildings dot the elevated river banks on the north side with mottled fuchsia and egg-yolk yellow, the russet-tiled roofs glowing in the afternoon sun. The Douro River snakes onwards below the bridge, sailboats tacking to and fro in the mild afternoon breeze and in Vila Nova de Gaia on the south bank the signs of major Port brands vie for attention. It’s gorgeous and we can’t wait to explore more. We are staying at The Yeatman, in the heart of the Gaia district, known for its Port cellars or caves, where the fortified wine is stored and aged. Port is produced exclusively in the Douro Valley in the northern provinces of Portugal. It took its name in the latter half of the 17th Century from the city of Porto, where much

of the product was, and still is, brought to market. It seems only logical then to stay in a hotel that dotes on the beverage. The Yeatman bills itself as a wine hotel, the theme running through the entire establishment, from the elevators wrapped in wine-related imagery to the cellars packed with a comprehensive collection of Portuguese wines. The wine theme even extends to the Caudalie Vinothérapie Spa with the exclusive products and therapies using extracts from the vine. The connection is not arbitrary – The Yeatman family entered the Port trade in 1838 and are among the most distinguished and enterprising of the historic Port families. Their descendants maintain this tradition, owning three of the big Port names and showing a clear pride in their affinity with the grape. The hotel is fully booked this weekend, but the hushed lobby is tranquil. It’s that kind of place. The soaring ceilings and grand scale of the hotel contribute to the feeling of exclusivity, as does its elevation. Seemingly carved into the hill, the hotel is terraced

like a vineyard, every room offering a balcony with a superb view of the city. From the terrace outside Dick’s Bar, named in tribute to Dick Yeatman, the panoramic view is mesmerising as we gaze at the city over the rim of the wine-glass-shaped outdoor swimming pool. We’ll venture back here in the evening to admire the night lights over a Port-based cocktail, but before then there’s a city to explore. Porto is known as the city of bridges, although its first permanent bridge, the Ponte das Barcas, collapsed in 1809 only three years after its inauguration, under the weight of thousands of fugitives from the French Invasions during the Peninsular War. It was replaced decades later by the Ponte D. Maria II, but it’s the Ponte Luis I that anchors the city. The two-hinged double-deck arch bridge’s intricate blue-grey metalwork resembles the Eiffel Tower for a reason – the bridge was created by Teophile Seyrig, a former partner of Gustave Eiffel.

Crossing over the top level of the bridge, the sun warming our faces, our spirits are high. Our plan is simply to idle away a few days here, admiring the architecture, sampling the Port and dining on the local speciality; bacalhau or salted codfish. There’s plenty to take in – Porto’s historical centre contains a plethora of impressive buildings, many of which line the imposing Avenida dos Aliados, a sloping boulevard lined with grand buildings and a central promenade. At the top of the avenue stands the Town Hall,

made of granite and marble, a palatial building with a tall bell tower. Nearby, São Bento’s train station contains delicate blue and white tiled panels painted by artist Jorge Colaço which allude to the history of Portugal and the development of transport. For a different lofty perspective of the city, Clerigos Tower is one of the easily spotted architectural landmarks. The 1763 structure is part of the Clerigos Church, representing its bell tower. It was designed by Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni, who was also responsible for the design of many of the other landmarks of Porto.

Closer in to the river is the 12th Century Porto Cathedral, one of the city’s oldest monuments and an important Romanesque monument. The cathedral is flanked by two square towers, each supported with two buttresses and crowned with a cupola. The flamboyant interior of the São Francisco church, dripping with gold on every internal protrusion, provides a direct contrast and the catacombs below are a somewhat more macabre sight.

As the sun fades, we stumble down to the riverside to sip sangria and nibble on tapas plates of cured meat and cheese. On the opposite bank we can see the Telerférico de Gaia, a cable car that runs from the upper level of the Dom Luis l bridge down to the quayside, where the barcos rabelos boats of the Port houses bob on the Douro River. As the street light twinkle into life, we amble back to The Yeatman for cocktails at Dick’s Bar. We have two more days stretching languidly ahead. We will sample the Port and explore the markets, wander down cobbled alleyways and day-cruise under the six bridges. Most of all, we will relax and take in the peaceful atmosphere of this riverside retreat. It’s easy to feel comfortable here. Despite the sun-seeking tourists exploring every nook and cranny it’s uncrowded and unhurried. People walk around smiling under the pure blue sky.

20 Our final day rolls around quickly and we take a dip in The Yeatman’s indoor pool. The city is laid out before us, visible through the enormous floor to ceiling windows curving in a gentle arc that reflects the Douro River’s bends. We float in companionable silence, the vistas making conversation unnecessary. A

game that involves racing at top speed and striking a ball of 7.5 cm (approximately 3 inches) in diameter with a 53 inch bamboo polo mallet at the opponent’s goal requires exceptional hand eye co-ordination. This is why it is said that polo is a game for technicians, tacticians and spirited fighters.

POLO EXCLUSIVE HOME WORLDWIDE

Historically, the characteristics of a polo player were exemplified by Winston Churchill, both on and off the polo field. His love of the game began at Sandhurst. He regarded his failure to gain entry to the Infantry as a blessing, despite his father’s disappointment. His father’s attitude may have been influenced in part by financial considerations. He reputedly said “in the infantry one has to keep a man; in the Cavalry, a man and a horse as well”. Winston himself saw his aptitude for horse riding as his main, and perhaps only, athletic skill. His desire to remain within the Cavalry was also linked to his eagerness to serve in India.

His Indian dream became a reality in 1896 when the regiment in which he was serving, the 4th Hussars, were deployed to Bangalore. On arrival, his impatience to disembark before the main group resulted in him slipping and severely injuring his right shoulder, which affected him for the rest of his life. This injury created problems for his polo playing, as even slight movements would cause his shoulder to dislocate. In order to continue in the sport he resorted to strapping his arm to his side. He also felt continually hampered by a shortage of funds that restricted his pony power and he constantly appealed to his mother to borrow money to buy ponies. This became important when the Hussars formed a polo committee in order to purchase the entire stud of 25 ponies belonging to the Bombay Light Horse. Such an undertaking, together with constant practice, resulted in the team winning a polo tournament in Hyderabad within six weeks of arriving in India. The pinnacle of success in polo came in 1896 when the Hussars won the coveted Inter Regimental Cup held by the best British team in India. The team from Bangalore, sporting a one armed player, were not considered a serious threat to the 19th Hussars who were firm favourites. When the 4th Hussars scored a record number of goals at the start of the match and were clearly the best mounted team in the district the initial judgement was quickly dispelled.

In later life, Churchill’s advice to parents was not to give a son money but “As far as you can afford it, give him horses. No one ever came to grief – except honourable grief – through riding horses. No hour of life is lost that is spent in the saddle. Young men have often been ruined through owning horses, or through backing horses, but never through riding them; unless of course they break their necks, which, taken at a gallop, is a very good death to die.” In modern day polo, the individual expertise of players is systematically rated. As with golf players, polo players have handicaps which are adjusted according to goals scored or victories in tournaments. Handicaps range from -2 for beginners to +10 goals for the top players. The term goal doesn’t indicate the number of goals a player is expected to score but rather, rates the value of a player to the team. To the game’s credit, it is one of the few sports where sportsmanship, together with skills and knowledge, is used in rating a player. In open games, as in golf, handicaps are not considered. In handicap games they are used in order to more evenly match teams with players of varying ability. The team handicap is made up of the total of the players’ handicaps.

ESTONIAN GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB NEAR TALLINN, ESTONIA Estonian Golf & Country Club, located just 20 minutes from the exquisite capital city of Tallinn, has announced plans to construct a second 18-hole golf course, 150-room hotel in three phases and develop leisure amenities including a spa and tennis academy. The venue, a member of the prestigious European Tour Properties network, is already home to a successful real estate development and the new course, which will complement the venue’s acclaimed Sea Course, rated among Europe’s top 100 courses*, is part of a major development to create a family leisure resort and spa overlooking the Gulf of Finland. Course designer Annika Sörenstam, widely regarded as the greatest female golfer of all time, has been selected for both the calibre of her work - she has designed five courses worldwide to date – and her appreciation of a project that is targeting families and golf tourists from Scandinavia and the rest of Europe. The new layout will command outstanding views over the Rebala National Heritage area and will replace the existing 9-hole Stone Course. Annika said: “It’s exciting to be designing my first golf course in Europe, especially one that is close to home. My objective is to create a course that good golfers will find strategic, competitive and visually appealing, while the design will utilize a variety of forward tees to make it equally enjoyable and engaging for newer golfers and young players. Ultimately, the layout will offer great versatility, from tournament play to resort golf, giving all golfers, no matter how far they hit the ball, a world class experience.” Annika is currently working on course plans with European Golf Design (EGD), the golf course design company of the European Tour and IMG, with groundwork scheduled to start in 2016.
